South Park - Season Five

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2005

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

Comedy, Lenny Bruce once said, is tragedy plus time. Less than two months--hardly any time at all--had elapsed after September 11 when South Park broadcast an episode that addressed the tragedy. Wit and satire have their place, of course, but in the aftermath of epochal upheaval, sometimes good old-fashioned ridicule can diminish an enemy and help to heal a grieving nation. The Emmy-nominated episode "Osama Bin Laden Has Farty Pants" does the cathartic trick, as Cartman plays Bugs Bunny to Osama's Elmer Fudd with a series of humiliating pranks, one of which reveals Osama's miniscule Bin Laden. "This is how we deal with stuff," creators Trey P...

South Park - Season Six

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2005

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

The quiet little mountain town of South Park, Colorado enters its sixth season as America’s weirdest and most dysfunctional town, and if you thought that title was already claimed by Springfield, I have one word for you: Lemmiwinks. If you thought it couldn’t get any weirder, this season will prove you wrong. But the good news is that South Park has always been able to maintain a mathematical-like balance of proportionality so impressive it could be charted on a graph: as South Park gets weirder, so it gets funnier (usually). Which makes sense because one of South Park’s greatest strengths has always been to reflect the strange...

South Park - Season Seven

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2005

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

There is nothing in South Park's seventh season to offend Tom Cruise (nothing about Scientology, at any rate; that will come in season 9). However, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, Rob Reiner, the Queer Eye guys, Christopher Reeve (!), war supporters and anti-war protesters, and Mormons, do not get off so easy. But, "Who cares?" as the townspeople sing in "I'm a Little Bit Country." What matters is that with this particular episode, South Park attained the precious, syndication-ready 100-episode mark! Another milestone: "Raisins," in which Wendy breaks up with Stan, who falls under the influence of the "Goth kids" ("If you want to be one of th...

South Park - Season Eighth

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2006

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

To quote Bad Day at Black Rock, a man is as big as what'll make him mad. By this criteria, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are giants. Fanaticism of any stripe, steroids, vapid pop culture icons marketed as role models for impressionable youth, and mass merchants encroaching on small town life are just some of the hot button issues tackled in South Park's eighth season. Of course, South Park is not above (or beneath) stooping to conquer, as witness "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset," which climaxes in a "whore-off" featuring--you guessed it--Paris Hilton. Sure, Paris is an easy target, as is Michael Jackson (portrayed in the ...

South Park - Season Ten

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2007

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

For those South Park fans who have wondered if their beloved animated series would lose its satirical edge after a decade on the air, the Complete Tenth Season boxed set provides a resounding negative. Creators Matt Park and Trey Stone come out swinging with the season opener, "The Return of Chef," which addresses both the media frenzy churned up over the headline-grabbing "Trapped in the Closet" episode from the previous season, as well as the departure of Isaac Hayes, who voiced the well-loved Chef (and netted the series its highest ratings for a debut episode in years). Not content to leave one religion alone, the show tackles the 2006 rio...

South Park - Season Eleven

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2008

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

After 10 seasons of sick, wrong, brilliant, subversive, and groundbreaking humor, South Park just keeps getting a little more sick, a little more wrong, and a lot more funny. What could possibly be left for the boys from the small, redneck mountain town of South Park, Colorado to accomplish? Plenty, as it turns out. Cartman, for example, fights a midget in the season opener, pulls a practical joke that gets poor Butters sent to a special camp for gay children, sets a new town record for the most number of homeless people jumped over on his skateboard, and fakes having Tourette's syndrome in order to get away with saying whatever he wants at s...

South Park - Season Thirteen

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2010

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Isaac Hayes, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Mona Marshall, April Stewart

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

Season 13 of the show manages to continue the series longer than most animated shows still without killing what the show itself is meant to be, for the most part. This season if not all out great like I feel seasons 6,8 or 11 were is at least another solid season with stand out episodes. While the show did take a few more unscheduled trips to the silly end of things they still manage to be enjoyable for true fans and it hardly feels the show is selling out or risking becoming a satire of itself.

South Park - Season Nine

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2007

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

A lot can happen in the middle of nowhere. The tiny mountain town of South Park, Colorado has proven that beyond a doubt for the last eight seasons. Fortunately for fans of this Comedy Central pillar, series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker obviously had no lack of ideas for their ninth season. Over the course of fourteen episodes, Mr. Garrison gets a sex change, Cartman thwarts a hippie music festival that threatens to destroy the town, the boys (Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny) start a talent agency, Kenny leads angelic forces in an epic battle against Satan’s minions at the gates of heaven, and the boys become really bad at losing a...

Four boys. One f**ked up town.

South Park - Season Two

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 1997

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

Now that enough time has lapsed, we can all have a good laugh over South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone's amusing little April Fools prank, in which they kicked off the show's second season not with the conclusion to season one's cliffhanger that would reveal the identity of Cartman's father, but with an all-Terrance, all-Phillip, all-farting episode, "Not Without My Anus." The ensuing outcry illustrated just how seriously its devoted fans take South Park. There is little evidence of sophomore slump in this three-disc collection of 18 episodes that continue the coming-of-age trials of third graders Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny. Th...

South Park - Season Three

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 1997

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

The third time's the, for want of a better word, charm for South Park on DVD. Instead of mere episode intros as on the first two boxed sets, Trey Parker and Matt Stone finally oblige us with actual episode commentary, or, as they call it, "commentary-mini." On this optional audio track, Trey and Matt goof for about five minutes or so at the top of each episode, certifying some as favorites ("Tweek vs. Craig," "Jewbilee," and "Worldwide Recorder Concert," which is described as "a reverse after-school special from hell"), championing others popularly dismissed by South Park's otherwise loyal fans ("Jakovasaurs," "Sexual Harassment Panda"), and ...

South Park - Season Four

Genres: Comedy, Animation

Year: 2004

Country: USA

Director: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.3

In the episode "Chef Goes Nanners," Cartman is left standing alone in the snow after Wendy blithely proclaims her improbable attraction for him to has suddenly vanished. Cartman heaves a heavy sigh, and exits Chaplinesque stage right. But any concerns that South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone had gone soft, or that Cartman would undergo a more sympathetic, Louie De Palma-like makeover are abated in nearly every other episode of South Park's pivotal fourth season. From the "downright immature" trashing of Phil Collins (whose "You'll Be in My Heart" from Tarzan had emerged victorious Oscar night over Parker and Stone's "Blame Canada")...

Philip J. Fry is a 25 year old delivery boy living in New York City who is cryogenically frozen on New Year's 1999 for 1000 years, where he wakes up in New New York City on December 31, 2999. There, he meets Turanga Leela, a tough but loving, beautiful one-eyed alien; and Bender, an alcohol-powered bending robot who is addicted to liquor, cigars, stealing, amongst other things. Eventually, they all meet up with Fry's Great, Great, Great, etc... Nephew, Hubert J. Farnsworth. Farnsworth is a very old man who is a genius but is very senile and forgetful. Fry, Leela, and Bender wind up working for Farnsworth's Planet Express Delivery Service. The...

Futurama - Season Two

Genres: Comedy, Sci-Fi, Animation

Year: 2003

Country: Germany

Director: Matt Groening

Starring: Billy West, Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, John Di Maggio

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.2

Matt Groening's second season of the 31st century sci-fi sitcom Futurama maintained the high scripting standards of the first and also well brought improved digital animation. Couch potato Fry now seems thoroughly reconciled to his new existence, transported 10 centuries hence to "New New York" and working for Professor Farmsworth's delivery service. He's surrounded by a cast of freaks, including the bitchily cute Amy (with whom he has a romantic brush) and Hermes, the West Indian bureaucrat. Most sympathetic is the one-eyed Leela (voiced by Katey Segal). Like Lisa Simpson, she is brilliant but unappreciated; she finds solace in her pet Nibbl...

Futurama - Season Three

Year: 2004

Country: Germany

Director: Matt Groening

Starring: Billy West, Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, John Di Maggio

Available Quality: DivX, iPod

IMDB Rating: 9.2

Good news, everyone, the third DVD volume of Futurama is just as funny as ever--irreverent, boundlessly inventive, warmhearted, and chock-full of in-jokes, sight gags, and fleeting references to all manner of pop-culture icons and obscure genre classics. In fact, if the show has a problem, it's that it's all so lovingly crafted that scarcely a frame goes by without something both funny and clever going on: when a horse wins a race by a quantum fraction, Prof. Farnsworth fulminates, "You changed the result by observing it!" Recurring minor characters (Elzar the chef, the robot mafia, the mutants in the sewers) pop up unexpectedly throughout, p...

Futurama - Season Four

Director: Matt Groening

Starring: Billy West, Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, John Di Maggio

Available Quality: DivX

IMDB Rating: 9.2

No more good news, everyone--this fourth volume of Futurama is the show's last. By turns frenetic and far-sighted, Matt Groening's futuristic comedy provided belly-laughs for self-confessed sci-fi nerds, but somehow failed to connect with a broader audience, even though it was often funnier and sharper than stablemate The Simpsons. So now bid farewell to the Planet Express team--Fry, Leela, Zoidberg, Bender, Amy, Hermes, Prof Farnsworth--as well as to kindly Kif, cloned Cubert, megalomaniac Mom, mutants in the sewer, the cast of robo-sitcom All My Circuits, swashbuckling space lothario and William Shatner wannabe Zapp Brannigan, Elzar the fou...
