As many reviewers have noted, this three-disc collector's edition (for regular DVD players) forces you to change discs IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE. Instead of laying out the entire film on one disc, this ridiculous box set puts the first half of the movie on one disc and the second on another, for all three versions!!You have two ways to avoid this - either buy the plain-jane original release (no extras, no frills) or the Blu-ray version. Several Blu-ray salesmen seem to be actively monitoring and commenting on a number of Amazon boards urging disappointed Avatar fans to pour all their money into Blu-ray.So instead of paying just $25 for the collector's edition, millions of Avatar fans are now being steered to pay an additional $80 or so for a Blu-ray player, something they wouldn't have bought otherwise. These so-called "helpful commentators" even throw in marketing crap like, "you know you want it" and try to convince skeptics that they're "missing out on the latest HD" by not buying Blu-ray.Give me a break. What they won't tell you is that Blu-ray is a failed format that many people, especially in this recession, see it for the gimmick that it is. Honestly, how many times have you watched a movie on a regular DVD player and sighed, "Gee, this movie really stinks because it's not a Blu-ray?"These greedy salesmen are no different from the military in Avatar - why settle for trees when you could mow them down and build condos? Nothing is ever good enough. Why not take a lesson from the Avatar - live simply, in tune with Nature, and not contribute to Blu-ray landfills. Buy the no-frills version, be patient, and wait for the 3D version, which will shoot down the price of this current "collector's edition" scam version to a few pennies in 2011.

Not a family film in my opinion and released at a time when familiesare tempted to go and see it together as a family. I saw it in a 3Dcinema. Too long for 3D entertainment quite honestly, hurts the earseyes and neck and you are straining to enjoy the spectacle even in acomfortable theatre seat. After the first 30 minutes, the novelty ofthe 3D effect wears off and tempted to take off the 3D glasses.I agree the film is sensational with special effects and I love thestory per se of the Navi people - but not the story of the film itself?why should everything have to be about America doing this, Americadoing that? why an American marine? why all that early film reterickfrom the Colonel? Why did it have to be Jake, though I understand whathappened to his twin brother in the story.Sorry, S. Weaver is a terrific actress but she is out of place andover-aged in this movie, she does work well with james cameron but nothere. Makes me sad that Cameron seems to have concentrated on getting amessage across concentrating on violence and that America can more orless take what it wants from whoever it wants, whenever it wants.Ironically I saw The Box earlier in the day which also delivered aninsinuative point raising a moral dilemma. The story of the film isextremely weak and more time should have been spent nurturing it andclarifying the characters. Many young and old will watch the movie andnot understand it at all, especially those in foreign countries, whohave no knowledge of the American invasion of Vietnam for example.Alien and Terminator are superior Cameron films and this film will onlybe remembered for the 3D visual effects, not for any acting. it is nota bad film. Cameron is a pro and where nudity was apparent, it wasdiscreet and there was no real bad language throughout.Reminded me a bit of Braveheart and the William Wallace Scotland vEngland (we will get our way whatever) and a touch of Jurassic Parkwith the forest creatures. If Weavers character was meant to beprominent, she certainly had no lines in the movie to demonstrate hervast talent or to show why scientists were there at all in theconflict.Bless the guy who played Jake, he carries the film completely (shouldhave played the vampire in New Moon as Edward) and he clearly hasacting talent. I hope no Oscars for this film because its pure Americanpropaganda, no acting performance deserves to be nominated but considerit for special effects and visuals, that alone but not beyond.Enjoy the film for what it is and perhaps don't take it too seriously.I get tired of films like this which depict America as a vindictivenation out to grab grab grab - the importance of the mineral theAmericans were after was never fully explained - so the story itselfwas biased and overladen in favour of violence rather thanalternatives.Too long for 3D and not a family film, too many nauseating moments foryoung kids.

Don't let the amazing graphics and 3D fool you. Watch it just regularDVD. Not blu-ray. Not 3D. Just regular. And you will see how bad thescript/screenplay, and the originality of the story is. We've seen this100,000,000 times before, just not like this.Another thing that I didn't really like was the characters. I honestlydidn't like any of them. I didn't care for Jake, or the Na'vi. Iespecially thought the Colonel was horrible. If you're going to watch this movie. Don't expect some Oscar Nomineescript. Or good characters. Or even likable characters. Just watch itfor the visual. Nothing more. Nothing less.

This is the best movie I have ever seen.. ever. The Dark Knight can saygoodbye. My favorite movie is Avatar, and just in time. 2009 is almostover. Nothing like Avatar to end the year. I was just about to feelvery awful at the end under I saw the main character, who's name Istill haven't really gotten (I think it's Jack) survive. He's stillalive. An alien world, similar to Earth's prehistoric times. The times ofdinosaurs. Giant birds that you have never seen alive, and indegenouspeople that live their (unlike Earth had as far as we know.) We camethere for a rock. Yep, a rock that sells for millions of dollars. Ifthe indegenous don't leave, sucks for them, it's our land. We'vecreated clones of the indegenous peoples that we put our Humans in, andJack was one of them. He later realizes that we are very wrong, andwill go against his race.Nothing like the giant big army guy boss dying at the end to make thismovie feel excellent. I really loved it. There's nothing more I cansay, and I doubt that this review will be on the front, but this willreally be your best movie, too.

Saw this in 3D Imax and highly recommend it in this medium. I am sureit is also outstanding in the standard format but the visuals ARE themovie and if you have a 3D screen within driving distance, definitelytake advantage and go see it.The plot itself is somewhat generic. It's the stereotypical military /industrial complex (i.e. Â The USA) exploiting the natural resources ofindigenous peoples (i.e. Â Iraq) with ruthless and inhuman efficiency. The protagonist is Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who is an Army soldierwho is transformed into one of the indigenous natives in order tobetter exploit them (ie. Â steal their oil, or "unobtainium" in thefilm). The natives are 9 feet tall blue people who can communicate withother organic beings in their universe through their hair. If thissounds dumb, it is. But the visuals are stunning and well worth puttingup with the D grade movie plot.I don't have much else to say about his movie. Dumb plot and insipiddialog, but breathtaking technical wizardry making this an incredibleexperience.

AVATAR...A Wonderful Cinematic Experience It is a great cinematicexperience. Wonderful acting skills in a super cool and astonishingenvironment. Wonderful work once again by the great James Cameron.Wonderful acting skills and a perfect combination of Action, Romance,Sci-Fi, Adventure. Action, emotions, stunts, special effects are worthwatching.. however the music fails to touch the soul as in the case ofTITANIC100% recommended movie and worth watch a multiple times. The movie ismuch better experience when watched in 3D.So just get out of your house this weekend and enjoy the movie with atub of popcorn!!!

I was beyond impressed, this movie was good in so many ways that it ishard to know where to start... So I guess it will be with the CG -These were by far the best effects I have seen in an movie, theintegration of both live action and animation was seamless, I recommendit to be seen in 3D, because I caught myself swatting at what was 3Dbugs flying around. The storyline was long but kept me involved so asnot to become bored, and though I was warned it was kind of a "TreeHugger movie" I did not get that, there was much more to the story thanthat, and should wake people up to how we should treat each other. Mynest step is to see it again in IMAX-3D.

The Most Important Movie Ever Made - is all I have to say about that. How awesome that James Cameron chose to say what he said in Avatar. Howawesome that he chose to share the truths about the sacredness of liveand how all being are connected. He could have shown fast cars, bustygirls in wet t-shirts and scary guns. But no, he chose to show love, compassion and beauty. This movie is a powerful message, one much needed in times of lostillusions. I hope it reaches far and wide.I have seen the movie 3 times to date, have taken people I love to seeit, and going back to see it yet again with more people I love. And allmy friends who SEE love it, and all their friends who SEE love it too.Thank you, James Cameron.

I want to say for one, that this movie was EXTRAORDINARY! And for whatit's worth comes everything you can't possible imagine of what Cameronhad in store for the audience. It was mesmerizing to see that the 3-Dlived up to its hype and and wowed everybody in my theater. Like only 2people used the bathroom within a 2 and half hour period!? That is themark it left with audiences when it first appeared on screen. Nobodyknew what to expect, and in the following, everyone got what theydidn't expect which was lush colorful movie with some great CGI thatwas perfectly complimented with a great story... Some will beg todiffer, but the real star is the 3-D. Yes, the 3-D! Wow, It has as oftoday changed the way will see our entertainment and how we view it. Soladies and guys I would prefer everyone to see this cause it is onlyworth the time on the big screen while still in 3-D format. 20/10..

Okay, I'm your typical 20-year-old dude. I watch a lot of horrormovies. I've never ever, not once in my life, felt like crying during amovie, not even when I was a kid, and no, not even for The Lion King. But Avatar got to me like no movie ever did. It was such mind-numbinglybeautiful and poignant experience that I felt awed just by being in thetheater. It's embarrassing and strange for me to even say this, but when I gothome, Avatar had me in tears. I may write a coherent comment later, when I have the words.James Cameron, you humble us all.

The shear amount of technology that went into this film is enough toput anyone at awe. I was drawn into these computer generated charactersmore so than any other movie that I've seen before. Definitely hitevery emotion between me and my daughter who also has turned into an'Avatar' fan. A must watch. I will see this one again! Worth the movietheater price. From the beginning, you are introduced to a world, muchsimilar to our living rain forests. My daughter and I began tocorrelate the similarities between the Avatar world and ours. The 3dexperience puts you right in the middle, literally, enhancing therealistic cinematics in the movie. Take your older kids (10+). A fewviolent scenes and some interesting grown up innuendos.

Grossing over $2 billion worldwide, Avatar has become the mostsuccessful movie ever made. As well as having the highest budget for amovie. I'm glad that James waited before trying to create this movie. After creating titanic, we all thought that was it. He couldn't evermake a better and more successful movie. He proved us wrong. It showsthat anything is possible. Especially a self-taught filmmaker creatingTHE MOST SUCCESSFUL MOVE EVER.Now back to the movie itself. I was never able to see this movie intheaters. I saw it on a plane ride home from L.A. and again on ,ylittle iTouch screen. Unfortunately I was not able to see the extendededition but my hope is not lost. If I ever get a 3D TV. Sometime in thefuture. I am sure that I will get Avatar on Blu-Ray and then watch itand be amazing.Although many people didn't like the story, I still think it has valueoutside of the story. I still have trouble believing that I am watchingCGI. If you don't like Sci-fi or alien stories, still watch this onebecause it will blow your mind.

This upcoming edition of Avatar is without a doubt the one that fans have been waiting for, and is sure to be one of the highlight Blu-Rays for the holiday season. Not only are there 2 blu-rays chock full of amazing sounding special features, but we're also getting a 3 hour extended edition featuring the movie's original opening set on planet Earth, this is sure to be the definitive version of the movie to please fans of the original. In addition to the Earth opening, there are plenty of other new and extended scenes, featuring new locations, new animals, more action, and in addition to this are many scenes that help to improve the flow of the story, making Avatar into an even richer film. James Cameron is well known for his Special Editions that improve on his original movies, and this Extended Edition of Avatar is sure to follow in those footsteps. It should also be mentioned that finishing these extra scenes cost over 5 Million dollars, as none of them, except for 1, were completed when the movie was originally released, its not often that so much work and effort is put into an extended edition. And as amazing as all the announced special features seem, the one that will surely make this set worth owning will without a doubt be the Interactive scene deconstruction. With the ability to view the film in 3 key forms, the original motion capture with the actors in the soundstage, the "template" which is the inbetween of the motion capture and the final CG, and of course the final version, as well as Picture in Picture with interviews and commentary, this special feature is one that is only possible with the advanced storage space of Blu-Ray. Without a doubt this will be the ultimate look into the making of this film. Overall, this set appears to have more content than the last several blu-rays I've purchased put together. Amazon's current asking price of $36 is an amazing value for a set with so much contained within.

i watched this yesterday and i was really disappointed, i cannot seewhat people see in this movie. the story makes no sense at all, all thecharacters are really clichéd, and the whole movie is ridiculouslypredictable.especially the plot element with the marine being in a wheelchair feelsreally forced, seeing some guy in a wheelchair in a spaceship betweenwalking mecha-robots felt unreal, even more unreal than the sigourneyweaver character smoking inside a tech lab 150 years in the future...as for the visuals, they might be the best effects to date, but theworld of pandora still doesn't look real. it has a computer-gamish lookon it, and since the whole storyline is like something someone wrotedown in 10 minutes for a computer game, i couldn't help but feelinglike i was watching some game trailer.

As an atheist I found this movie very interesting to watch. The rangeof emotions and thoughts about the director and his ideas were all overthe place for me, finally culminating in great satisfaction at the end.Early on in the movie I thought Cameron was nuts... The movie quicklygot spiritual with trees holding spirits of dead relatives, etc.. Myatheist mind immediately thought.. "How can this guy Cameron expect meto believe that another race on another planet will come up with thepreposterous idea of a god, and an afterlife like man did here onEarth?"I quickly found out though that this race does not actually havebeliefs at all. In fact, they actually have proof.. What they have isnot a belief, but a tangible, touchable fact. They talk to theirdeceased relatives, and they actually communicate with their god (notpray) and it is proved throughout the movie to be an actual reality. Iquickly found myself liking the movie because the concept of a god thatsomeone has really seen and has proof of and is real, is intriguing. Soreal that when their god was asked to help fight off the humans, itactually helped by sending some rather bad-ass animals. Rated a 7 out of 10, only because it was over-hyped.. honestly thoughtit would be better than Titanic given the hype, but in my opinion, thisis far from Titanic. Everyone should see it though.

First, he gave us slimy âAliensâ that Sigourney Weaver battled hard asRipley. Then the cult hit âTerminatorâ that created a new benchmark forscience fiction and followed it up with the smash hit sequelâTerminator 2: Judgment Dayâ which initiated many in my generation toSci-Fi and admiration of Hollywood. âTitanicâ mesmerized fans of bothSFX and Romance genres while it pushed the envelope for elaborateproduction design.More than 12 years after âTitanicâ comes the most awaited movie of therecent years âAvatarâ in which James Cameron has created a whole newPlanet Pandora replete with new creatures, predators and humanoidaliens that in every way are beautiful! Well, it did cost him more than300 million USD to make it and another 100 spent on promotion, but thespectacle that you see on the gigantic IMAX screen in 3D is beyondwords!! Set in 2154 and 4 light years away, humans are now exploiting âPandoraâan earth-like moon orbiting a gas giant in Alpha Centauri for anexpensive and rare mineral appropriately called âunobtaniumâ. Coming intheir way are the indigenous Naâvi who need to be relocated from theirâhome-treeâ that sits on a deposit of unobtainium.RDA, the company has already tried its best to convince the Naâvi tomove. They have taught them English and tried offering infrastructure. But, being content in their natural settings, the Naâvi have nointerest in what the humans have to offer. English plus business:doesnât this remind you of European colonization in some sort? The air on Pandora is toxic to humans necessitating the wearing of gasmasks outdoors. To get around this, the researchers led by Dr GraceAugustine played by good old Sigourney Weaver have developed analien-human hybrid âAvatarâ that can be mentally controlled by thebrain of the person whose DNA was used to build it. Here, the idea ofjacking into a computer generated digital-self will surely remind youof âThe Matrixâ!The death of his researcher brother in the Avatar program leads to hisparaplegic ex-Marine brother Jake Sully joining up the Avatar program.Played by Sam Worthington of Terminator Salvation fame, Jake is happyusing his Avatar that gets him to use his legs. Soon, he befriends thetree living Naâvi and its huntress princess Neytiri. Learning theirways during the day, Jake returns to debrief his trigger-happy boss,Colonel Quaritch.Soon Jake begins to appreciate the harmony and spiritual connection theNaâvi have with nature and falls in love with Neytiri, much to thedismay of Quaritch who attacks the home-tree. Though the script waswritten a decade ago, I believe Cameron has subtly hit out at therecent American battles for oil that the administration justified indubious ways. For those who say the script is poor, take this quotefrom Jake Sully âWhen people are sitting on stuff you want, you makethem your enemyâ. Thought provoking indeed! Visual effects are Avatarâs forte as it creates a new world before you.Filmed in blank sets with motion capture, the actors had to act outwithout ever knowing what it would look like on screen. Sensors on theActorsâ body and spots on their faces picked up moves and emotionsbringing the CGI characters to life. To bring his actors up to speed,Cameron took them to jungles in Hawaii to bring them up to speed onjungle life. 60% of Avatar is CGI with only 40% being real footage. What youâre left with is a WOW! While you may not see Zoe Saldana as Neytiri anywhere in its 162minutes, the nimble ballet trained actor worked hard to make hercharacter so endearing and realistic. The scenes where she trains Jakein the art of war are its best, be it bonding with the Ikran that seemslike a flyer straight from âJurassic Parkâ or riding Paâli the hairlesshorse. The biggest blame that Avatar can take is that its story is toopredictable. Man recruited to fight, falls for the local culture andturns his guns around; just as you saw in âThe Last Samuraiâ. But,making Avatar cool are its special effects that seem so real in IMAX3D.Emotion seekers and script blamers canât really deny the storyâs softside when you see the Naâvi suffer human attack and they die fightingfor nature we have scant respect for. For one, Naâvi lived foreverything we donât. Politically too, the battle takes a dig on thesuffering the Native Red Indians went through in the country thatHollywood comes from.On Music, James Hornerâs score doesnât really stand out and has hisâTroyâ-esque feel. Probably, a score that doesnât stick out as a sorethumb is good enough in a movie thatâs all about special effects. Asfor Cameron and Horner, this is their third venture together afterâAliensâ and âTitanicâ with the latter giving him his first and onlyOscar honors. As a director, James Cameron doesnât need a criticâs recommendation. Hedropped out of college and drove trucks, but Cameron is the superbenchmark movie maker with truly gifted imagination and commitment totranslate his dreams to the screen. You simply canât ask for more froma sci-fi movie at least for a few more years to come! The least I can do with my review is to give it a 10/10. What are youwaiting for? Go pull out your newspapers or log on to the web, checkshow times for 3D and book your tickets now! An IMAX would be evenbetter. Believe me, itâs a bang for your buck!

The core of the story in Avatar has been seen before, but you could saythat about most of the film classics we praise today. Of course a goodstory is essential, and the story in Avatar is good not to mention verycurrent even if you have seen it before and know where it leads, andyou will just by having seen the trailer. What Cameron does to outweighthis though, is by introducing us to an unbelievable, jaw-droppingalien, yet very earthly world. By now I have only seen the movie once, but the incredible visuals still stays with me days after, and I do notthink I have ever experienced the same with any other movie before. Theworld Cameron has created is full of life and color and you actuallybelieve it 100%. You can almost smell the flora and fauna and in 3d itdoes seem as if you are there! The characters are good without beinggreat, except for Colonel Miles Quaritch played by the always excellentStephen Lang. He is awesome as the baddie, and in many ways steals allthe scenes he is in. Perhaps the best bad guy in a long time andluckily the final showdown between him and Sam's character is really noletdown. Also nice to see Sigourney Weaver again. In short, Cameron hasmade a greatly paced action sci-fi film, spiced with heart and romance,a great villain and the best visuals for a movie of that type, I haveseen so far. I can't wait to revisit Pandora.

After over a decade since the film 'Titanic' became the highestgrossing film of all time and placed itself in-between Ben-Hur & Lordof the Rings: The Return of the King for the most academy awards everwon by a single film, James Cameron returns to bring the audience'AVATAR' a film rumoured to be more expensive than any other film (ifso it would be the third time Cameron has broken the record) and isclaimed to be a revolution in 3-D technology and visual effects. Andafter all the hype and media attention Cameron has given us a brilliantfilm, well told and brilliantly crafted. Cameron's direction is perfectand confident, after allowing the likes of Michael Bay and RolandEmmerich to try and direct large action films he returns to show themhow a master does it. The acting is superb and supported by theincredible visual effects, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and SigourneyWeaver's performances all shine through the blue creatures known as theNa'vi. The visual effects are incredible and if Avatar - likely to seea best picture nomination as well - does not sweep the technicalcategories it will be a joke on the Oscars, worse than the GoldenCompass winning visual effects over Transformers. James Horner's thirdcollaboration with Cameron as a composer is once again a triumph andwhile I still prefer the Titanic soundtrack, his music is a perfectblend of Aliens, Titanic and original music that you have never heardbefore. The pacing is wonderful and nothing short of an epic and if Ihad a problem it was only with the dialogue. I would prefer if JamesCameron wrote the screen story but co-wrote the screenplay with someoneelse. The film is certainly a milestone and should definitely be seen.

Best special effects ever!Felt like I was there in the jungle.Loved the story as well. This was my first 3D movie and was blown awayby how intense it was. Felt like I could reach out the touch theobjects on screen. Cool! I plan to see it again several times over theholidays. The experience is like going on a vacation to another planet.I highly recommend this movie for children as well. The message of themovie is very positive. This was the only movie I've been to that theaudience applauded at the end. The make-up was excellent, I loved theway the cat-people's ears moved. Totally a not-to-miss film. Bet itwins many awards!

Avatar is considered by some to be the greatest film of all time and Ido say that I disagree. While it is the highest selling, I do not thinkit is the best by far. There are plenty of good things about the film. There are a few goodacting performances that made the film better. Obviously the effectswere incredible, breathtaking to say the least. It would be stupid tosay otherwise. And for once a film wasn't mediocre in 3-D, Avatar gotthis accomplished well. However, I feel cons outweigh the pros for this installment. First off,the clichés killed me, such as "Unobtainium" and "Pandora". That was aminor annoyance compared to the plot. It was so obvious and predictablethat is was hard to try to get into it. I felt I was watching a laserlight show rather than a movie: beautiful, but no substance. I do think that the movie is was too overrated. Far better ones cameout that year and this year. While it obviously raised the bar ineffects miles ahead of where it had been, it just couldn't take you inlike a magnificent movie does. I believe it is simply an average movie, not great but not too bad either.
