He believes in once a criminal, always a criminal. Then, when Eddies employers wifes pearls go missing, it comes out that Eddie and Larry both spent time in prison, and theyre fired. Eddie Ellison (James Dunn) made a big mistake and ending up servingtime in Sing Sing. However, his lovely fiancé, Kay (Claire Trevor)waits for him and even takes him to Niagara Falls to get married on theday he leaves prison. Now, six years later, they live in New York Citywith their little girl, Shirley (Shirley Temple). Eddie presently worksas a chauffeur and even got his good buddy a job with the same company. But, a crooked insurance investigator is certain that Eddie will breakthe law again and he watches the home constantly. On the day ofShirley's birthday, Eddie and Shirley entertain guests with theirjokes, songs, and dances. But, things get complicated when an old, thieving friend of Eddie's gives Shirley a "hot" pearl necklace. Hedoes this to bring Eddie back into the criminal fold but Shirley thinksit is a birthday gift. A ton of confusion reigns soon after as Eddietries to hide the necklace from the insurance man and Shirley believesit is all an elaborate game of hide and seek. Will Eddie get fingered? This is a fun movie with a few dark elements, surprising in a Templefilm. Shirley is adorable, young and talented, displaying her amazingtalents for comedy, song, and dance. Dunn, too, is a stitch as herjoking father, who is trying his best to go straight, while Trevor isvery beautiful and touching as the faithful wife and mother. All of thelesser actors fulfill their roles quite nicely, too. The colorizedversion I watched had nice sets, costumes, songs, plot elements, anddirection. If you like light comedy and vaudeville-type song-and-stomp,this is a good choice for you. Although there is a touch of violence, the sunny nature of the main players and their antics make it almost asecond cousin to a Marx Brothers flick. My recommendation is to take adose of Shirley on a day without sunshine, you'll feel like new.

This review is from: Baby Take a Bow (DVD) Quite a trip down memory lane! This little actress will forever be young! Like the new colorized version choice to black and white. Arrived so quickly and safe and sound. Liked very much!

Shirley Temple is wonderful. Beyond that, this is a movie that works onmany levels for me. Claire Trevor brings an added dimension to theloyal wife and mother, and the ever-hard-luck-bitten James Dunn (A TreeGrows In Brooklyn) is perfect as the ex-con father trying desperatelyto put his past behind him. Alan Dinehart's slick and sycophanticprivate detective -- an embittered and opportunistic ex-cop -- does hisbest to pray on people's fears and keep Dunn with no recourse from thegutter. James Flavin, who later made a career playing Irish cops in thecity, plays one here, albeit generally higher in rank and nobility thanmost of his later characters. Shirley only has two songs and one nicedance number with Dunn, but does more acting than musical work here, and is quite good at both. This is fine family entertainment amidst abackdrop of struggling to survive while the malicious and hypocriticaltry to keep others down. Certainly, although the movie was made in1934, its themes are as resonant as ever.

I have been a fan of Shirley Temple for about 34 years. I love all of her films. Baby Take a Bow is one of her very first vehicles by herself ( coming off Stand Up and Cheer and Little Miss Marker). The film has typical Shirley fare with singing and dancing. James Dunn plays her father and Claire Trevor plays her mother. Basically, dad is an excon trying to live life on the straight and narrow and gets caught up in events that could get him back in jail. The scene in which Shirley is "Captured" by the bad guy is scary, but no scarier that what kids see in Disney films. I am glad that Fox has released this films with both the original black and white and the colorized version. When Fox had released them on VHS originally, you could only have the colorized version, so I am glad that respect was given to the original medium. I was a little disappointed with the extras. I wish that they could have added a trailer for the film or a mini bio or clip of Shirley when she was younger. Overall, I am very pleased with this copy. If you are new to Shirley Temple, in my opinion the must see films are Bright Eyes and Poor Little Rich Girl.

When valuable pearls are stolen, two ex-cons working inthehome are immediately suspected. One of these fellows hasanincredibly precocious & talented little daughter who managesto get her chubby hands on the missing necklace. When thereal thief returns, will the tiny tot handle the dangeroussituation to everyone's satisfaction? Will, once again,BABYTAKE A BOW?Except for the presence of Shirley Temple, most likely thisfilmwould long ago have slipped into complete obscurity. JamesDunn, Claire Trevor & the rest of the adult performers dotheirbest with the rather tired material, but it is Shirley thatoneremembers. She is a darling & lights up her scenes withhersparkling personality. Everything else fades away...

story plots are weak, but who could deny temple's cute-ness. She was so little and so cute.

Shirley Temple is the daughter of a former criminal (James Dunn) and a beautiful blonde (Claire Trevor). The three seem to be the perfect family, but father's past keeps catching up to him. There's a cop out to get him and a gangster on the loose hoping to enlist the help of anyone he can get, the shadier the better. Despite his resistance, the gangster finds a way to access the family through sweet little Shirley who thinks it is all a game. Things certainly have changed since this film was made. No parent in their right mind would leave a four year old to play outside unattended with a known criminal on the loose. This film certainly isn't what I expected it to be. It is more of an adult film than something geared toward children because of the mature subject.Temple is very cute with her sweet smile and golden curls. Unfortunately, she seems a bit sad and her syrupy personality seems a bit forced. There are several scenes where we can see her smile quickly fade when her lines are delivered or when she is concentrating on her dancing. Perhaps she was being worked too hard or truly wasn't having fun. Nevertheless, she's very lovable. It is unfortunate that the DVD is promoted as being in color and the black and white original is heralded as an extra feature. The color doesn't look awful, but it wasn't meant to be so. People should be able to appreciate the film as it was made, not a jazzed up version for the close-minded who refuse to see anything in black and white.

Two years into Shirley's career she achieved top billing in a movie, and deservedly so. James Dunn as Shirley's father Eddie Ellison is funny, as is Ray Walker as Larry Scott, a close friend of Eddie, but Shirley's cute antics are a memorable feature of this movie, the first of about thirty movies in which Shirley either received top billing or was a co-star.Eddie Ellison is an ex-convict who has done his time. He has a good job as a driver for a wealthy man. After Larry Scott gets out of prison, Eddie helps him get a job with the same man. Things are going fine except for the presence of Private Investigator Welch (Alan Dinehart). Welch believes that Eddie and Larry are laying low until the right opportunity comes along. When a pearl necklace comes up missing from Eddie and Larry's employer, Welch does everything possible to make Eddie and Larry appear guilty. In the meantime, the real thief is getting away. While the subject of this movie is relatively serious, the movie is played for laughs throughout. Shirley is cute and her antics on screen are funny and enjoyable every moment she is in front of the camera. However, I am reluctant to recommend this movie for children because of scenes in this movie involving guns and a large knife. Most adults, particularly fans of Shirley Temple, will find these scenes clever and both a little scary and a little funny.Shirley's film career was expanding rapidly in 1934, the year of this movie. Shirley manages to charm her mother, her father, nearly everyone in the movie except Welch - another reason to dislike him, and the audience. If you want to see Shirley as she begins a phenomenal career, watch "Little Miss Marker" and then this movie and you will understand how she became the darling of Depression era America.Enjoy!

This has to be one of her best in the opinion of me! It is one of her most modern movies. She lives in a n apartmentr with her mom and dad and she even gets to play herself. Her daddy is a criminal going straight and when a clients neclace is stolen it messes everything up. Well they throw shirley's b-day party and she is amazing in the little ballerina dress and singing. Then the thief gives shirley the neclace to worsen things up,she thinks its a birthday gift (it is but) and makes a hide and go seek game out of it and puts it in her daddys pocket!yIKES then a very annoying guy comes to look he begins to look in their fathers coatjacket and just before he goes into the pcoket and say it would never be in there he then meets shirley and the father discovers it yikes!they then hide it in a duster/vacum/thing and the cleaner lady comes to get it ! they are safe it goes on until the criminal comes into the house and while the father tied him up shirley unties him because he gave her the gift! HE THEN TAKES HER and is in his hands for a whole 5 minutes ...its a little spooky for a 4/5 year old but all will turn out well as always

The first few films that Shirley made showed her as a cute, talentedyoungster in situations were the adults were adults and made most ofthe decisions. This was one of the few films where she had both afather and mother (who were fit and well). With "The Little Colonel"(1935) she became a star and appropriate vehicles were written so allthe other actors supported her. I prefer the earlier films (when Iwatch Shirley Temple at all) when she was just a cute kid who wastreated like a child by the adults around her.Kay (gorgeous Claire Trevor) is going to Ossining to meet Eddie Ellisonwho has just got out of Sing Sing. They are then off to Niagara Fallsto be married. On the train she bumps into Welch (Alan Dinehart), asleazy private investigator. He has always had a soft spot for her butshe has never forgiven him for sending Eddie to jail. There is a nicescene at Niagara Falls where Eddie and Kay plan their future. (Dunn andTrevor made a couple of films together and have an easy camaraderie).Six years later Eddie is a chauffeur at the wealthy Carson residenceand he has also secured his friend Larry Scott a job. Adorable ShirleyTemple plays their little daughter Shirley, who we first meet at adancing school where she is showing her mother a new step she haslearned. There are several scenes involving Shirley doing cute things(playing hide and seek with her daddy, doing morning exercises with hermother). The main story is more dramatic than the usual Temple fare with Ellisonand Scott trying to go straight. They are being stymied at every turnby Welch, who has a vendetta against them. Another inmate,Trigger,(Ralf Harolde) is released and steals some pearls from theCarson residence. Ellison and Scott, who have kept quiet about theirstay in the big house are found out and reluctantly asked to leavetheir jobs. That night there is a big rooftop party for Shirley and she(looking completely gorgeous in a frilly pink party dress) and Eddiesteal the show with a catchy and comic rendition of "On Accounta I LoveYou". They also do a cute dance. It is clear that she and Dunn hadgreat chemistry together.Trigger sees Shirley playing in the street and gives her the pearls tohide - she instantly starts a hide and seek game with her unsuspectingdad, his friend Larry and Welch. The pearls eventually end up in acarpet sweeper, the carpet sweeper is emptied in the trash and thepearls are gone. There is an exciting chase across the rooftops withTrigger kidnapping little Shirley. (Is this the first and only timeShirley was manhandled by a baddie???) There is a shoot out with Eddiehurt but in the end triumphant. You somehow know Claire Trevor is destined for better things. Shedoesn't have a lot to do but makes the most of the key scenes she has.Greatly Recommended.

I love swimming around in these old movies. Very few of them are worthwatching for themselves. But many of them have such strange narrativeexperiments. You just can't honk around today like this. Here's what this is. It part prison picture in tone. Prison movies werea staple in that era because the system was considered to be inherentlyunjust, and good men could easily be sent to the bighouse, with copsusually depicted as incompetent or cruel. Its part adventure/comedy, with stolen jewels, hidden and with openslapstick toward the end.And it partly a show movie with a song and dance number, apparentlyrecreated from a previous film. The film itself is dull and cheap, but the idea behind it is wild. Apudgy 5 year old can carry a film?Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do withthis part of your life.

At the age of only seven, young Shirley Temple made her first leading starring role for Fox Studios with 1934's "Baby Take A Bow" and thus a legendary child star was born to become the newest studio box-office attraction.Young Shirley lives with her mom (Claire Trevor) and ex-con dad (James Dunn). But when a pair of her dad's friends pearl necklace is stolen,it's up to him to catch the real crook and also convince himself that he isn't the thief he use to be years ago.Featuring wonderful strong performances and a great direction by Harry Lachman (Laurel & Hardy's "Our Relations" and "Dante's Inferno"),the film never loses its comedy stylings nor dramatic tone and highly fast-paced all the way.Highly recommended !ABOUT THE DVD:This fun film makes its wonderful DVD debut as part of the Voulme Two Shirley Temple DVD Collection of her beloved films. This DVD features both a restored black & white version as well as a brand-new digitally colorized version that completely blows away the horrid 1994 colorized VHS release.Legend Films has always done outstanding work on the colorization processing for the films they release as well as including the original B&W version too,but extras are nothing more than a lackluster effort (hence the four-star rating). As with the previous Temple releases from Fox and Legend,it contains both unrestored trailers for "Heidi" and "Little Miss Broadway".Despite the absence of many extras, owning both great transfers of the film on one disc makes this a must-have to any fan of classic film or to family film buffs, you won't be dissappointed with this release ! Well-recommended !

A nice, interesting film. Story holds your interest. Shirley Temple fans will enjoy her personality in this film.

*My review does contain a spoiler*, but it's something good to know if you watch this with young children (6 and under). We received the box set of movies (Bright Eyes, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm & this one) for my young daughter who loves singing and dancing. She loves watching Shirley Temple dance and act, and overall enjoyed this movie but be forewarned that the end is rather scary (SPOILER ALERT: she's kidnapped briefly at the end and is caught in crossfire which frightened my daughter). The scene is over within minutes and compared to today's movie violence is very tame, but I wish I'd known so I could have addressed it ahead of time. From an adult perspective though it was a very clever film and my older daughter loved it and understood the storyline. Definitely enjoyable and better for her to watch then Bright Eyes which is really scary!

This was my first attempt at watching a Shirley Temple movie, thoughthis film was made before she really hit it big and therefore herscreen time isn't as much as it would quickly become. The story insteadcenters on a likable ex-convict Eddie Ellison (James Dunn) who hasharmless fun playing practical jokes on his friends and comes out ofjail to marry a loyal woman (Claire Trevor). Six years later, thecouple have young Shirley as their daughter and Eddie tries to hold ajob. But a bitter and nasty private investigator (Alan Dinehart) isdetermined to do whatever it takes to ruin Ellison and send him back tothe slammer again and tries to nail him for a theft he wasn't involvedin. Here is where daddy's little girl helps her father out by trying tofoil the real crook. It's easy to sense the potential which shines off Shirley Temple duringher scenes with Dunn and Trevor, and the precocious little charmer doesdelight with some mild dancing and her cutesy antics, but this film isreportedly not one of her best. It's lightweight stuff, though probablya feature that wouldn't be remembered at all today if not for theparticipation of Miss Temple.

Little Shirley's father is a good father who once was a thief("Eddie"). Her family's best friends are a younger man who also once was a thief, but is going straight("Larry"), and his new wife. When "Trigger Stone", a robber and sometimes a killer, steals a pearl necklace from Eddie and Larry's employer, a detective who's trying to promote himself a job by blaming everything on Eddie and Larry blames it on them(well, of course!). Trigger Stone gives the pearls to Shirley, and tells her it's a "birthday present"(yes, in the movie it is her fifth birthday)to protect himself. Little Shirley hides the beads in her father's pocket, not knowing what she was doing. "Welch"(the detective), comes to Shirley's family's apartment and openly searches everywhere. He even tries to bribe Shirley into telling him where the beads are. then Trigger Stone comes to collect the beads and that's where I'll stop, but I will tell you that Shirley is in a lot of trouble, and I don't mean with her parents.

i loved it. I think other people would love it to. if you have not seen it yet go rent it. it is a great movie for little girls and grownups.

This is a cute movie and Shirley Temple is just adorable in it, but there is a scene at the end of the movie in which little Shirley is--literally--in the clutches of the bad guy. She is bodily carried to the rooftop of her apartment building, screaming, "Mommy! Daddy! Help me!!" for about six or seven minutes while the police are in pursuit with guns drawn and bullets being fired. I didn't find this appropriate for my young daughter, who currently is enamored with little Shirley Temple. At 2 1/2 years old, my child is too young to understand that "Baby Take a Bow" is just a movie and that the little girl was not in mortal danger during the making of the film. I will let her watch other movies by Shirley Temple rather than this one. I don't know how many films Temple had made by the time "Baby Take a Bow" was filmed, but it certainly shows that she had tremendous talent at a very young age. She was truly a child star and entirely deserving of that title. What a wonderful little actress!
ccthemovieman-1 (13 April 2012)
If this is not considered one of Shirley Temple's more popular movies,it's easy to understand why.First, she isn't the main attraction. James Dunn and Claire Trevor arethe stars. This was Temple's first feature film but she was the third, fourth or even fifth person in here, screen time-wise. Thepowers-that-be must have seen the bright future she had, though, andmade two more films with her in the same year (1934), beginning with"Bright Eyes," and she never looked back, becoming a huge box-officeattraction on her own. This particular film featured a lot more dramaand crime element and that was no longer to be, too, as light-heartedsinging and dancing was the ticket...not this sort of fare. "This sort of fare" meant a climactic scene in which Shirley iskidnapped, carried to a rooftop kicking and screaming for help whileher father is pursuing and her mother is frantically looking on,screaming herself. Hey, that's not a "Shirley Temple film" as we knowit. That doesn't mean this movie is all dark or doesn't offer sometypically-cute Temple moments: it does. There is a great song-and-dancenumber with Dunn, who was good singer in his own right, and a soloearlier in the film. However, the rest is drama about Dunn and his paltrying to go straight after a prison sentence and a few guys who don'twant to see that or believe it. Overall, it's a fairly interestingmovie, although very dated in spots, but it's not the kind of thingTemple fans are accustomed to seeing....so be forewarned, if youhaven't seen this.

One of Shirley Temple's funniest movies and all time classics! She plays the daughter of an ex-con played by the loveable James Dunn and gets tangled up in a robbery that can almost put her father back into jail. With an award-winning cast, Shirley taps and acts as adorable and innocent as she can. In this movie, Temple deserves to take a bow!
