A hockey enthusiast since 12 years of age, Toronto-based Rajvinder Singh, even went to the extent of trimming his hair, discarding his Pagriturban, did not complete his education, incurred the wrath of his father, Darvesh, who wanted him to be involved in the family business as well as confirm and respect Sikh religion principles and values. Hoping to play professional hockey, Rajvinder, along with other fellow Sikh players, instead finds himself treated as the object of ridicule, referred to as a joker, by mainstream Caucasian players. Even his friends tease him and ask him to take up Guli Danda and Kabaddi, while his father makes him work for Uncle Sammy as a truck driver. He is attracted to stunning law student Melissa Winters while her brother, Dan, offers to coach Rajvinder and his team. Unable to get themselves included in any team, they form their own...

oh my god, the lamest movie of the decade!

what an elementary school leveled screenplay! who were the guys whosepockets so deep that would blindly invested and wasted on this worstfilm of the decade?! the screenplay was so lame, so brain-dead naiveand childish and the worst of all, so formulaic boring. now, justwanted to promote a bunch of Hindi young men suddenly became sointerested in ice hockey instead of their national recreation cricketgame? what a lame storyline, man. got a rebellious son who dropped outof college, not interested in learning and taking over the transportingtrucking business. father so disappointed, mother a buffer zone betweenhusband and son. then got another fat timid little brother as atraditional good student and good son. then lot of kinfolks with thesame singh last name, all loved ice hockey. then fell for a white girl, and girl's brother became the coach, then.....do i have to repeat thiscrappy scenario more? GIVE ME A BREAK!!! why not gave the productionmoney to charity and you guys could still write off when filing yourincome taxes? throw away this kinda money is a capital crime!

Game misconduct!

I hoped that this would be an enjoyable movie, considering that thevery funny Russell Peters was in it; unfortunately, it was LAME.The jokes generally fell flat. Pot calling the kettle black? Really?! Iam surprised that we never heard, "I know you are, but what am I?" Potcalling the kettle brown would have been funnier. The plot had no periods of intensity ... certainly nothing that made megive a rat's ass about what happened and nothing worthy of beingfollowed by "denouement".When Raj is served the very hot dish at Patel's, and his love interest,Melissa, eats it, she is desperate for a glass of water. In that scene,Raj knocks over the glass then hands it to her. It was very obviousthat there was no liquid in the glass before or after it was knockedover. Presumably the "knocking over" was an error. Was this such a lowbudget movie that they could not shoot another take to make it evenlook remotely real?!How is it that Raj has a Canadian accent, but his younger brother hasan Indian accent, even if only slight? Were they not both raised in thesame household in Canada? The appearance of Drake in the movie (apparently a friend of RussellPeters in really life) was oh-so-contrived. While it is possible thatsomeone of his calibre would be hanging out at the same bar as theseregular Joes, even if he were, we are expected to believe that he wouldsing for someone - someone he does not know - just because they askedhim (and God knows how Raj got past his entourage to even ask him)? The whole issue with turbans vs. helmets - presumably, a criticalmoment - was brought up so casually and then "solved" so casually itwas laughable. And Raj was able to have ancient-style Sikh warriorhelmets retrofitted to CSA standards - and thus be acceptable for playin the league - within a week (yes, the dialogue even mentioned thatthey only had a week)?! Really?! Come on! Extremely disappointing. Perhaps, Mr. Peters, like Brent Butt provedwith "Corner Gas", you should stick to stand-up ... you're much funnierthere.

An un-necessary film with nothing but repetition.

Right from the day when the first look of the film was revealed, SPEEDYSINGHS failed to create any kind of excitement even in the northernPunjabi belt of the country due to its repeated, uninteresting andforced kind of content. There was nothing new in the storyline, nonovel idea to offer in the name of sports and no freshness in itslooks, concept or presentation. So, without going into its story details, which is easily predictable,I would like to share that whenever a movie like SPEEDY SINGHS comes,it simply forces me to think that there has to be some other fishyreason to make and spend time on such worthless projects. Becauseotherwise, there is no way, someone can think of making it with anykind of cinematic vision at all. In short, it's a silly mixture of allseen before sequences which do not give you even a single moment toenjoy in the whole film. Now, why Akshay Kumar associated himself with this and even produced itwith his full spirits again sends me into the suspicious zone. FranklyI think Akshay is now overdoing and dangerously playing with hispopular SINGH IS KINNG image in a very funny way. At times it becomesquite hilarious to see the desperation in his SIKH portrayal on thescreen with that entire fake make up. And with SPEEDY SINGHS he isagain going to experience failure, like his last unsuccessful venturePATAILA HOUSE based on an identical sports theme of Cricket. Hence itstime he switches on to a different fresh mode at the earliest. The film raises many valid interesting questions regarding its overusedplot and execution. Obviously the makers were not focused on the IndianMarket since they have chosen Ice Hockey in the script which is not asport played in our part of the world. So, Indian market was just goingto be a bonus for them in case the film was a HIT.But, I seriously couldn't understand why Akshay and Anupam Kher saidyes to the script, when they both had already done a similar movie inthe past dealing with two different sports. Surprisingly Anupam Kherplays an exactly identical role to what he played in Gurinder Chaddha'sBEND IT LIKE BECKHAM which revolved around Football. And Akshay himselfplayed the lead in recent PATIALA HOUSE which talked about a Punjabiunderdog player willing to play Cricket for England against the will ofhis father. Incidentally in that film too there was a sequenceexplaining Akshay's "Hair Cutting Act" as shown in SPEEDY SINGHS, whichhas been deliberately added only to satisfy the religious sentiments ofa particular section of viewers.Actually the film is called BREAKWAY in its original English title andis directed by Robert Lieberman, who amazingly uses all 'ages old'Indian ingredients for his foreign film. There is family drama, a loveangle, a group of friends as a team, a deliberately added Punjabi comiccharacter, and almost everything which we repeatedly see in all theRegional Punjabi films made nowadays. But the weakest part of SPEEDYSINGHS is that despite of being a Sports Film, it never offers a greatcrescendo kind of euphoria towards its end, featuring the obvious winof the SINGHS team. And the viewer keeps wondering, Is this really afilm written around an exciting sport? However, in case you loved its groovy track "Shera Di Kaum Punjabi",heavily promoted by Akshay himself, then I would like to comment thatSPEEDY SINGHS has simply got nothing even close to a Sher (LION), Speedor Sport. So better play an indoor game at home with your entire familyinstead of watching this un-necessary film in the theater.

A fun warm movie!

This is a great little movie. Easy and fun to watch. It is cliché andpredictable at times, especially towards the end but that does not takeaway from the heart warming story that is at the core of this movie. The music is great and the few Bollywood type scenes add to the fun andfestivity of the movie. Vinay Virmani gives a great performance as doesCamilla Belle and Rob Lowe. The best performance of the show however is"the dad" Anupam Kher. His stern yet tender performance is believablefrom the very start of the movie. Russell Peters seemed a bit stiff andnot nearly as funny as his stand up but that does not slow down thismovie. A great popcorn movie.
