Breaking Bad, on the surface, seems to be a marketable and typical showfollowing the usual premise of a middle class American leading a doublelife- one for good, and one for evil- in the wake of other great showslike the Sopranos, Dexter, Weeds, etc. However, what starts off as an enjoyable drama evolves into abeautifully crafted tale- the stuff of a complex modern Shakespeariantragedy. Breaking Bad is more than just a television show. It is a workof art. The acting is mostly impeccable, and the writing and dialogueis original and profound. On top of it all, the directing style seemsto have evolved and improved throughout the series. Nearly every shotis a masterpiece of its own.So if you are looking for an original series, which will not only killa couple of hours, but also leave you seeing the world in a differentway- finding story in every small instance around you- this is the showfor you

I have never seen a television show start out with such promise in itsfirst season and then degrade so precipitously in its second. The first season (10+) of this show is a truly original achievement, blending the masterful creation of suspension of disbelief for a highlyimprobable premise, the darkest humor, high irony, excellent writingand character development, brilliant acting, and bone-chilling suspensetogether to create a masterpiece. I could not stop watching it and wasreminded mostly of the best Hitchcock while sitting their jaw-droppedand reeling, completely addictive and brilliant television. The second season (4, being charitable) of the show crosses the lineinto absurd elements that prevent suspension of disbelief, pares outthe black humor by at least 80%, contains only very obvious"Dickensian" level ironic elements, devolves into a formulaic"hyper-dialogued" progression from "soap drama moment" to "soap dramamoment," stops all meaningful character development cold, hampers theactors (who for the most part are very obviously phoning in theirtrite, yawn inducing lines... but still manage to do a good job),introduces banal and unnecessarily derivative subplots seemingly gearedto a teenage/young female vampire melodrama audience (office dalliance,ill-fated romance, etc.), removes all of the nail-biting suspense andreplaces it with "are we there yet?" mild annoyance, in short castratesthe show and drains all the testosterone right the hell out of it...quite a feat.Does the marketing machine insist on feminizing every single goodfictional show appealing to a heterosexual male audience these days? Why yes it does. Apparently men don't watch much fictional televisionthese days and no one cares if we do because we aren't that susceptibleto advertising and branding (unless it's pickup trucks, beer or golfequipment). The progression from "Breaking Bad" Season 1 to Season 2 is as if one'sfavorite season of "24" was followed by a season in which Jack Bauergoes around and ties up all his past romantic interests ala "chickflick" methodology, wholly derivative and destructive of the show'spremise and potential.Caveat, I have not seen Season 3, and have no real incentive to unlessextreme changes and reversions to Season 1 form are made.Caveat 2, beware of marketing shill reviews on IMDb, there's obviouslyquite a bit of viral marketing at play on this title. Any awards thisshow wins or has won are attributable to the brilliant first season, not the second.

Disgusting, hyper-realistically gritty, painfully frustrating in that"I don't want to watch but I'll look through my fingers" kinda way . .. yet eminently watchable and extremely funny. I don't know how theyget through the situations they do but fate always lends a hand, albeitdigging a bigger hole each time.Every single aspect of this production is a little quirky - plot, script, casting, acting, cinematography, music. Nothing is straightlaced which makes it endearing. But that's not likely to be theadjective that comes to mind after the pilot episode . . . thinkTarantino does Weeds.Just remember not to eat anything beforehand.

Awesome show! what I really like about it is that it really hooks youat the very beginning unlike some other shows that are also good. Likethe Sopranos and the Wire for example. I got through the Wire andthought it was very good, but it took a few episodes to get into. The Sopranos I didn't really get into after 2 episodes and decided notto watch it. This, though, hooked me with the very first few scenes. The acting is superb and the story is wonderfully written. I also lovethe way the season 2 ended in that it could basically be an ending forthe series if only two episodes were going to be there, but it alsoacts as a good link to more seasons (I think season 3 has already beenannounced). Great Show! Everyone should watch this, except people who can't standto see the darker sides of life.

Cranston became my favourite comedy actor in Malcolm in the Middle, histiming is impeccable and his physicality brought a freshness to hisperformance. In Breaking Bad he proves that he is not limited in anyway to comedy. Supported by a great cast of more than competent actors(with a special mention for Aaron Paul) Cranston is riveting as aterminally ill chemistry teacher who turns to the dark side to providefor his soon-to-be bereaved family. There are elements of comedy inBreaking Bad-very,very black comedy but comedy nonetheless and that toostrikes just the right note in the writing and performances. Not onebit of this story would work if any of the writing, direction or actingwas wrong. Everything is spot on. The characters are not written orplayed as stereotypes and the script is tight and drives the storyalong. The whole enterprise is about as absorbing as drama can be andone cannot wait to see what happens from one episode to the next- andwhat happens is never predictable. As for the people who throw up theirhands in horror and say that a programme like this glorifies drugdealing and drug use, then watch the damn thing!! If ever a programmeshows what drugs do to people then BB does. A real cautionary tale.I am into series 2 now and hope that the standard continues in thethird series. A terrific example of what can be done with TV drama whenplaying it safe is off the agenda.

I started to watch reruns of Breaking Bad because I had never watchedit before. How did I not find this show earlier, I don't know. I amproud to say that not many television shows, or even films, handle aconcept like this with such amazing depth and great writing.I remember that whenever Bryan Cranston would win the Emmy award againand again I would seriously wonder what was so great about this man. Ofcourse, things like this always happen. I can say that Cranston isgiving one of the best performances to ever hit the small screen. Thewriters have given him a character that rises and challenges him and hehas very admirably risen up to the challenge. He is undeniablypowerful. I also want to give a shout out to Aaron Paul, who next toCranston plays very well and has also risen above to create probablythe most unforgettable and sympathetic druggie in a long time. The restof the supporting cast also is great and are able to handle theircharacters magnificently well, especially Anna Gunn who has to dealwith Cranston's always-erratic behavior. The direction and writing in the show are top-notch and one is reallysurprised by how much you care and are involved by the characters. Thecinematography is of the quality of an Oscar-winning film, as is theediting and the other technical aspects of the show. I do not seemyself ever leaving this show because I know that the writers willnever let me or any of the other fans down. Long live Breaking Bad, andAMC for creating some of TV's best stories.

The show focuses on Walter White a guy who could afford a much nicercar than the one he drives. He could afford this because he's asuccessful drug manufacturer. At first he begins this dangerous careerto make money to pay for cancer treatment. However somewhere along theway the writers began to lean away from the whole cancer issue. Itseems to have disappeared as cases of terminal cancer so often do inreality. Along with the less than desirable vehicle Walt drives is hisless than desirable harlot of a wife Skylar. This dried out old box hasbrought Walter down from one high after another during the course ofthis unfortunate program. Walt's one friend seems to be a meth addleddegenerate wigger named Jesse. In short we have the tale of a guy withway too much money to have such a whore of a wife and a retarded bestfriend. Bob Odenkirk is awesome in this.

Well, i started to watch Breaking Bad very late so i had to hurry tocatch up with AMC schedules.Knowing that, and needing to hurry, i watched like the 3 first seasonsin 2 weeks, with several episodes a day.I found first season pretty boring, because of the lack of violence andmajor events. But, let's face it, screenwriters & creator had to taketime to set a solid background for the show. In this season, you barelyonly learn about Hank's (main character) family & Jesse's (Supportingrole) past more than 'how to really cook good meths ?'.For the second season, the show offers lot more, especially inviolence, verbal and physic and some nice drug dealing. Then, after watching season number 2, i personally had hugeexpectations, wondering if Hank & Jesse would finally grow and becomethe most famous drug dealers. And so did they !They meet their boss, Gustavo (probably the best character in thatshow, in my opinion) and become more and more bad, starting killingpeople, even though they had a rule against that. 3rd and 4th seasonswill grab your guts and make you want for more.I won't say anything further, just advice people who might read thiscomment to watch Breaking Bad and they won't regret it.10/10.

Breaking Bad is as close to perfection that seems possible. It seemslike we have been lead to believe that to have it all is not possible. You can have good writing and poor acting. Great acting supporting aflimsy plot. Great writing and acting but ineffective direction. This show delivers on everything. The direction has a clear vision andis expertly and artistically executed. The acting from every characteris superb, truly superb. The buddy comedy elements are subtle andengaging. The writing deserves special note. In Shakespeare's tragedies the plotis always a decision or event from which everything organically stems.Every event in the show follows a stream of logic. There is nothingthat is dredged forth to progress the plot, it is all the outcome of afew decisions. Breaking Bad is the same. There is no convenient plotdevices or deus ex machina. No magic to dig the writers out of a cornerlike in Lost or characters acting out of character. I honestly cannot think of a fault in this program. It is trulylightning in a bottle.

In the middle of fourth season I have a need to say something aboutBreaking Bad. I always had my favorite TV shows and I have them today, like it is Dexter or Game of Thrones, but Breaking Bad goes on the topof everything I watched and that I am watching. I must give greatregards to all of the crew of the show, as any aspect here is firstclass. It is rare feeling for one TV show to be that good.It is hard to be objective here, but what everyone agrees is thatacting, cinematography and music is on higher standards of regular TVwork. During first season I found its plot not just original but soinvolving and with other seasons it just become an addiction for more. This fourth season is magnificent in its way and when I search forawards and opinions there is nothing but thrills. And I agree. Even villains here are not just likable, and officials(DEA) are perceived as opposite to that. The crystal met is a very bad drug, and we all know that, but here wedon't think about it that way, actually the Art of the creators of theshow made lead us to feel positive for our heroes. I don't know muchabout drugs, I only know how met is bad, but here you have feeling thatmet they produce might not be so harmful? Never mind it is only show.I think that there are many moral issues here, and how they vaguefamily life with criminal activity is masterfully. The whole positivethinking about it (Mr. White character) is that he did that because ofcaring of his family, as he is not negative person. And character Jesseis simply adorable, even in the criminal context, yet rightful and withhigh moral in itself.I am happy that there will be one season more. This show simplydeserves to be put in the film library as a rare masterfullyachievement for TV with cult status like it is memorable Sopranos, StarTrek NG, Mission Impossible, Seinfeld, Twilight Zone and Tales from theCrypt to mention some of the best ever.

Breaking Bad is simply brilliant, there is no other way to describethis show. It is the best acted show currently on TV and maybeall-time. There are not enough words to describe Bryan Cranston'sportrayal of Walter White. His 3 emmy's speak for itself. Just like VicMackey on The Shield, the protagonist is becoming the antagonist butyou continue to root for the guy. Aaron Paul has been unbelievable ashis side kick Jesse and in my opinion gave a better performance duringthe ground breaking 3rd season. The concept and plot may initially turnyou off but if you enjoyed The Wire, Sopranos, Mad Men, or The Shieldthen I guarantee you will enjoy this show. It may not be at The Wireand The Soprano's level yet, but one more season of greatness will putit right in the pantheon of dramas.

This show is better than nearly every movie coming out of Hollywood. Those clowns that spend 100 million dollars to make crappy movies thatrely only on CGI and explosions could learn so much from a show thatlikely costs a couple million...for the whole season!!! The show hasfully developed characters, incredible plot twists, slow suspensepeppered with just enough shock and horror to leave you on the edge ofyour seat. It is also funny at times. The only bad thing is each episode is so good the time flies and youmust wait an entire week in suspense to watch again. Few shows inhistory have that quality. The only one in recent memory that was justas good and quite similar with the suspense, characters etc. was therebooted and much darker Battlestar Galactica series that ran on Sci-Fia few years ago (also called the best show on TV at that time byNewsweek, TV guide etc.). ....Two of the best shows I've ever seenhands down

Breaking bad is a good show but fails to achieve greatness on multiplelevels due to a combination of bad acting, unrealistic writing and lackof grit.Brysan Cranston plays Walter White who is terminally ill high schoolchemistry teacher who decides to leave his family with a substantialsum of money to support them in the future by cooking meth. There is nodenying that Cranston is fine actor but the supporting cast and wherethe show gets let down the most. The supporting characters do not come across as believable either withtheir dialogue or actions and sadly their acting is less thandesirable. Like so many before it the show strives to show "true" gritbut fails like so many American shows, I don't know whether it is thelighting or make up but everything is too shiny and clean and this is acommon problem with American shows compared to British shows, which dooften capture the rough and crude far better.Breaking bad is good show but nothing special but worth a watch isnothing else is on.

Now let's get one thing straight; this is a television program NOT forthe faint at heart. If you like your viewing saccharine, with easyanswers and everything wrapped up and snapped back to the beginning bythe end of the episode, Breaking Bad is not for you. The premise aloneshould be enough to tell you that; a cancer-stricken father who is achemistry teacher turns to illegal drug manufacture with anot-too-bright ex-student and struggles with his own mortality andmorality along the way, doing his best to hide the new career choicefrom his pregnant wife, son with cerebal palsy, medic sister-in-law andlaw enforcer brother. Yes, this isn't light-weight material by anymeans.I'm not a fan of these shows that rely on "inflated sense of tension"to pump up the viewer's adrenaline levels while covering for poorscripting; stuff like 24, Lost and Prison Break started out well-enoughbut quickly descended into this cheap shock tactic approach to keep theaudience hooked. Once I saw through this I stopped watching themcompletely and have been seeking out quality American shows that arewell-produced and equally well-written, and I am happy to say thatBreaking Bad is one of these.Bryan Cranston is perfectly cast as Walt, the man who has to make toughchoices to provide for his family. He so perfectly becomes thecharacter that it was not until later I realised he was previously castas Hal in Malcolm In The Middle. His emotional range is staggering;with a few well-timed gestures or vocalisations he can convey severalfeelings at once, and when Walt is in pain it is completely believable.Walt is a man of few words, but chooses these words very carefully, sowhen he speaks everyone on-screen and in the audience are listening.Cranston isn't just carrying passengers though; he's ably supported byAnna Gunn as his wife Skylar, who brings just the right amount of careand concern for her husband and baby as needed and RJ Mitte plays theson who has CP and gives a very accurate, non-condescending portrayalof the condition so different from the ham-handed "sympathy ploy"approach so overused by shows from the States. Dean Norris plays Walt'sbrother Hank, the all-American police officer who doesn't take any guffand flushes out drug dealers for a living, with his quirky kleptomaniacwife Marie (the lightest character in this show, amusingly) who ishandled with panache by Betsy Brandt. Rounding out the main cast isAaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman, every inch the nervy, paranoid andstreetwise "cook" who becomes Walt's new partner and guide to the worldof drug trafficking. There's much to recommend. Tight, well-plotted scripts that make theunbelievable tangible and don't waste a line while doing so. Superb, inventive direction and settings that perfectly fit the mood of theshow, an interesting mixture of steadicam, handicam, point-of-view andcamcorder shots that appear to be captured by the cast themselves.Excellent choice of soundtrack; almost every episode ends with aclassic song and the musical cues throughout really add to theatmosphere without becoming overpowering; witness the searing,high-pitched noises when we see through Walt's eyes as he is in pain orbeing given bad news for an example. What is most remarkable is that the show never gives easy answers, never biases us towards the characters (we are given both sides of thedebate and left to make our own choices, which respects the viewersintelligence) and always does things that you will not expect. There isnot a single cliché to be found here, no way of knowing exactly howeach person will react to the situations they are thrust into. Theseare complex, multi-faceted individuals with free will and their ownmotivations, who exist not as mere tools to advance the plot. The plotitself is always coherent and leaves very few loose ends. If you see anevent or object framed, however subtlety, you can bet it will come backlater on. Maybe not in the same episode, but as part of the story arc.And last but not least is the incredibly pitch black humour that cropsup every now and then, so dark it almost feels uncomfortable to laugh. If you liked the first season of Dexter but don't like the direction ithas now, Breaking Bad is for you. Not since I saw Firefly (a verydifferent kind of show) have I enjoyed a television program this much.If they can carry this program on for two or three more seasons andthen end it without dragging past the logical closure point - and withWalt the way he is, this is crucial - it will be one of the greatestdrama series of all time.If you haven't tried it, start from the pilot episode, keep an openmind, and you just might find your new favourite show. I know I did.

Watch it and you will be hooked. Missed the first three episodesthinking why they would use Bryan Cranston from Malcom, but I MADE AHUGE MISTAKE. BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Home BORED 1 night and AMC ran a marathon of Breaking Bad, so I thoughtI would check out the three episodes I missed. Ever since then, nevermissed an episode and been a loyal fan. One of five shows I truly loveand will miss. Can not believe ending after season five. The show istruly unique and nothing will ever come close to its originality. BryanCranston and everyone involved with the shows deserves theup-most-respect. Will truly miss this show, but a show this greatshould not be dragged out, because someone or something will ruin it.

Bryan Cranston as Walter white is the bad - assertive ''good guy'' whofinds himself in a lot of trouble...because of a troubled student heused to teach high school chemistry to.Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman is the bad - troubled kid who narrowlyescapes doing time for cooking Crystal. And guess who's brother in lawis a top DEA agent and happens to be at the scene...Walter.Walter and Jesse undertake a dangerous journey , playing the dangerousgame, with dangerous people. This is a fantastic show with secretsCOOKING until boiling point and the consequences spread like a cancerfor Walter.

Ever Since the end of Lost I have been in a grim mood searching for aShow that meets my eye, just recently I started watching Breaking Bad.Breaking Bad is a work of art, and is easily one of my two favoritedramas. The first season is absolutely mind blowing. Most shows startto drag on and run out of ideas, and start to really crap the bed.Breaking Bad seems to just get stronger through each season, the wholeentire show runs on the literary technique of dramatic irony. Meaningthe viewer knows something that the characters don't. I find the plotunbelievably creative and realistic. I am extremely excited for thefifth season coming out next summer, season four ended with a bang. NowVince Gilligan has his hands full with a destined amazing last season.

Breaking bad is in my opinion the greatest TV show of all time, and Ithink it would be hard to deny it is one of the most neglected TV showin terms of TV ratings. The writing is unbelievable, the acting amazingwith superb character development down to the minor players. Myfavorite character is Saul Goodman who isn't even in half the episodes,he's hilarious, almost everything thing he says cracks me up. It killsme that the show is not more well known than it is, I put it up therewith the sopranos and the wire. It deserves so much credit as wellbecause it is so original, the subject, characters, and story line. Ijust had to put pen to paper on this one, my man Bryan Cranston hasdone too good of job. Thank you so much for all your work!
Andrew (12 April 2012)
Breaking Bad is a work of genius - I realize that is a word thrownaround somewhat haphazardly at times, but this show truly is brilliantin my view. The cinematography is beautiful and often ingenuous, theacting fantastic, the storyline and subplots enthralling and thesoundtrack cleverly chosen to the point where it becomes an integral, organic part of the show. As an example, David Costabile's (Gale)singing with the record player as he attends his domestic duties isdelightfully integrated - a scene I happily admit to have watched andlistened to several times. It has been said a lot (and duly acknowledged by awards) already howgreat the acting is in this show, but it won't hurt to say it again:Bryan Cranston is a joy to watch as Walter White, whose increasinglypolar double life is mesmerizing to follow as it evolves throughout theseries. Aaron Paul is also spectacular as Jesse Pinkman and complementsWalter White in a way that approaches yin-and-yang like qualities. DeanNorris, Anna Gunn, RJ Mitte and Betsy Brandt are also trulypraiseworthy; Dean Norris' part as Hank Schrader gives a particularlystunning performance in my view as he develops into a complex andvulnerable character who feels the need to hide his increasingfrustration and sense of alienation from his wife and colleagues. Agreat actor. Giancarlo Esposito, another actor well worth mentioning,is perfect as the enigmatic Gus. This is a show that works on is own terms - it is brave (lung cancer, rampant drug abuse, methamphetamine manufacture and distribution -hardly easy content to pitch at any network) and balances perfectlybetween the darkly sinister and the absurdly comical in my opinion. Itis a show that grows with every episode. Highly recommended!
ellisonhorne (12 April 2012)
In general, the acting by all in Breaking Bad is fantastic. However, the quality and range of acting by Aaron Paul is truly amazing. BryanCranston is getting a lot of attention, which is expected from aveteran actor with his experience. However, it's Aaron Paul'soutstanding performance that demonstrates the remarkable capacity, among a new generation of actors, to reveal a world of extremecomplexities and harsh realities that we find in today's America.Aaron Paul's ability to bring to life these contemporary elements isthe test of any great actor, at any age. Indeed, Breaking Bad brings avaluable contribution to the realm of quality Television Theater, andAaron Paul's work here is among the finest to come forward in a longwhile. Bravo, Mr. Paul!UPDATE: Great news! Aaron Paul has just won his first Emmy for BestSupporting Actor in a Drama Series, at the Annual Primetime Emmy Awards2010! Congratulations Mr. Paul! ~ e
