Charlie St. Cloud is a young man overcome by grief at the death of his younger brother. So much so that he takes a job as caretaker of the cemetery in which his brother is buried. Charlie has a special lasting bond with his brother though, as he can see him. Charlie meets up with his brother (Sam) each night to play catch and talk. Then, a girl comes into Charlies life and he must choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves.

Charlie St. Cloud reminded me of the movie "The Invisible." Also, there was a TV show episode with a similar plot many years ago on I believe Nickelodeon. For me, this made the movie a little predictable, yet it was still entertaining. The acting was good, but the story could have went much deeper and could have been much more emotional than it was. It felt a bit lazy. I thought it was good how the movie had adult themes. I'd say this one is a rental.

I watched this movie last night and really enjoyed it. I had it on my hard drive for awhile but since I really like action and adventure, I thought it might be slow and not interesting for me. Not so at all. It was excellent! It starts off with Charlie and his younger brother Sam sailing (nice shots too) and hanging out before he is to go to Stanford on a sailing scholarship. It's obvious that they are very close and enjoy each other's company. But one night, their car gets hit while Charlie is driving and Sam dies. While clinically dead, Charlie makes a promise to Sam in the visions he has that he will meet Sam every day for baseball before sunset. Then the movie skips five years ahead. Devasted and tormented by guilt, Charlie has taken a job as caretaker in the cemetery that Sam is buried in instead of going away to college and moving on with his life so he can keep his promise to Sam. Every day at sunset, Charlie meets Sam, who is caught in limbo between 'here' and the afterlife. It doesn't really explain what Sam does all day long and where he is, but it does make it clear that Sam doesn't want to 'move on' because he will miss Charlie and that he is afraid if Charlie doesn't meet him each day, he will disappear. Then Charlie meets a girl, Tess, who also has a passion for sailing. Charlie struggles with moving on with his life versus keeping his promise to Sam. Then she disappears while boating and Charlie is forced to make a decision. I really enjoyed the film and didn't realize Charlie was Zac Efron (who my son hates). His acting was excellent. The cinematography was great. This is a movie for all ages, nothing profane or sexual in nature in the movie, which is rare to find. But don't expect to see lots of Ray Liotta and Kim Basinger because each appear only briefly, especially Kim. Thumbs up and four stars (I reserve five for my very very favorites).

After watching this I didn't come away thinking much of it.The acting was good and everything but for me the story line fell aparttowards the end. There was some beautiful scenes that were well filmed so its without adoubt watch-able.I would also say it wasn't predictable which is good but sometimes Icouldn't keep up and didn't understand a few conclusions to differentparts of the story line. However Efron played the lead well and it was believable...I think I'llhave to watch it again to get a good feel for it. But as it stands Ifeel it could have been allot better.

Like most Americans, I have found myself bewitched by Zac Efron; hisstunningly blue eyes, his sullen good looks and his perfectly tousledhair make him a great leading man. But alas, not even his good lookscould save this film. The premise is interesting enough, a senior in high school who has theworld on a string suddenly finds himself plunging down a path of apathyand regret after the death of his 12 year old brother. This is quitehard to believe, however, due to the poor relationship Charlie (Efron)has with his little brother. In the scenes before young Sam dies, thetwo don't seem to share any fraternal bond. So, when we find out that 5years after Sam's death Charlie is grounds keeper at the cemetery andplays catch with his dead brother every night, I thought it ridiculous.Efron plays Charlie the same way both before and after Sam dies:completely apathetic and nearly removed from the screen. There is atwist towards the end of the film that makes the plot even moredifficult to grasp. It is very difficult to empathize with Charlie atthis point. Ray Liotta has a tiny, tiny part which should have been developed muchmore fully. Kim Basinger is totally forgettable. Efron's love interest,Amanda Crew, is very hard to like. The film hardly explores hercharacter and I found myself responding to her supposedly dramaticscenes very negatively. The young actor who plays Sam does an okay job.He tries to be the awe-struck younger brother but Efron doesn't givehim enough to work with. Overall, I feel as though this movie was mishandled. In the hands ofeither a more sensitive director and/or cast, this could have been verytouching coming of age film. Sadly, it's far from it.One redeeming quality is that the scenery is beautiful. The lush forestand ocean water surrounding the cemetery and town are magnificent. If you really want to see this movie, I'd say wait. Wait to rent or seeit at the dollar theater or until you just totally forget about it.

I watched this movie with three friends (Age 12,12,13 and I am 12.) We all disliked the movie because it was sooo depressing. Many people die and it was not like what it looked like on the commercials. The movie seemed to drag on. On the flip side the acting was strong and we may not have been the targeted audience. People who like Zac Efron will probably enjoy this movie more than I did.

After his younger brother is killed in an auto accident, a young man plays catch with his dead sibling in a cemetery each day at the same time. Their bond is threatened by the emergence of a young woman in the man's life, and he has to choose between the two worlds. The film climaxes with a daring attempt to rescue the woman when she is lost sailing. A film that has been unfairly maligned by many critics, this was an engaging drama that pulls the viewer in with a story line that intrigues, and acting that is top notch.

This movie is wonderful. I went in thinking that Zac was going to be a possible down fall of the movie because of him being a Disney Star and I was blown away. Blown away by the movie, the story and including him. This movie is worth every penny, and I just bought the book.

This review is from: Charlie St. Cloud (DVD) Charlie St. Cloud was a good movie. I bought it because a friend told me it was a movie "You have to see". So I bought it and watched it. I agree it is a movie that was worth seeing.

I happened to watch the movie Charlie St. Cloud after my mom, who can'twrap her mind around watching movies without a TV screen and a remotein hand, picked it up in the New Releases section of Blockbuster. Ihappened to walk by as she was watching, and I was hooked. What drew mein was the immediate visual appeal of the film. Camera position. Colorsaturation. Woodsy and beachy scenery. Zac Efron. Did I say Zac Efron? That's what Charlie St. Cloud is: visually appealing. The direction ofphotography is great. There are some shots that, frozen, are pure art.The scene with Efron looking out at the ocean horizon on a boat atsunset resembles a Cartier ad. The blue-dyed scene where Efron emergesfrom the pond, cold and depressed from the loss of his younger brother, screams art indie. The shot where a sun-kissed Efron and beach-hairedAmanda Wells smooch atop a white yacht could come straight out of theglossy pages of a Nautica spread. If you want to experience visualbeauty, your eyes will find and feast the full spectrum in Charlie St.Cloud.Visual appeal aside, Charlie St. Cloud has not much to offer. Thebeginning of the film and the intriguing title bespoke promise that therest of the film did not live up to. Granted, it has all the rightelements. Hot male lead? Check. Hot female lead? Check.Under-appreciated protagonist who is in fact loyal, lovable, andincredibly intelligent; loss of a loved one; swelling violinsoundtrack; mysterious man who predicts protagonist's future and leaves(hint hint) a token with a hidden meaning; romance that setsprotagonist miraculously in perspective under plenty of sunsets? Check, check, check, check, check, and check. Oh, don't forget the midnightlove scene  but in a graveyard? Eccentric graveyard tryst aside,Charlie St. Cloud is wholly unoriginal. In a half-hearted attempt,Charlie St. Cloud mashes the all- too-familiar elements of your typicalHollywood blockbuster in a melodramatic and disjointed two hours ofscreen time. There were moments where I sympathized with Efron's character, where Icheered for him, where I waited with bated breath. Efron took a step inhis growth as an actor with Charlie St. Cloud, and I applaud hiseffort. However, Efron's acting skills remain to be honed in, and hewill need to make a serious performance in order to completely drop hisimage as the (very) handsome lead of teen flicks. Amanda Wells wascharming and convincing as her character. Zac's friend was genuinelyadorable. The gruff was extremely likable as a cynical but loyalmentor. Sadly, the times the actors were engaging on screen and thevisual appeal of the film were overshadowed by the tired recognition ofclichés hashed one too many times.

I purchased this movie because the book was soo amazing. Although the movie is good and well acted I was dissapointed. There were several important scenes in the book the movie left out. I feel as if the book gave more depth to the story. Zac Efron did a lot better job than what I gave him credit for, this guy will become a great actor. I believe he's on his way to becoming the next Brad Pitt or George Clooney. I recommend this movie for people who have not read the book, but I also still suggest you read the book.

Ben Sherwood's Novel THE DEATH AND LIFE OF CHARLIE ST. CLOUD prettymuch describes this Hallmarky love and spiritualism showcase for teenidol Zac Efron. Craig Pearce and Lewis Colick adapted the book for thescreen and director Burr Sherwood (known for his other films that areof this genre) stirs the whipped cream. It is a pretty story withpretty people filmed in a pretty location (British Columbia) and theresults are pretty predictable, yet when compared to the types ofstories on film that flood the theaters at least this film has gentleheart and a lack of terror and horror and for that we should bepleased. Charlie St. Cloud (Zac Efron, who holds in own in this ratherimplausible role) is a highly regarded young sailor who is wins asailing scholarship to Stanford upon graduation from high school. He isdevoted to his younger brother Sam (Charlie Tahan) and his singlemother nurse Claire (Kim Basinger - don't blink or you'll miss her verybrief appearance in the film). One night while Claire is on extra shiftat the hospital Charlie and Sam are in an auto accident: Sam dies, butCharlie is resuscitated by paramedic Florio Ferrente (Ray Liotta, inanother very brief cameo). Charlie is devastated over Sam's death andgives up his chances for a life by taking a custodian job in the towncemetery so he can be near a certain spot where he 'sees' andcommunicates with Sam every sunset - a life long promise to never leavehis little brother. Five years pass and Charlie's friend Alistair(Augustus Prew) - his only other friend Sully (Dave Franco, brother ofactor James Franco) has gone into the military - tries to encourageCharlie to date, but Charlie's eyes fall on Tess (Amanda Crew), afellow sailor from the past, and love begins. Tess decides to take along solo voyage in her boat and disappears. Charlie meets the nowcancer-ridden and dying Florio who gives him his St Jude medal andencourages Charlie to embrace life. Charlie strikes out on a mission tofind the missing Tess and the rest is pretty obvious. Though the story is heavy on the saccharine edge and strainscredibility, the team of actors is very fine - especially Zac Efron, whose presence is on the screen in practically every frame - so thefilm ends up being endearing. The cinematography by Enrique Chediak isgorgeous and the musical score by Rolfe Kent leans heavily on sad lovesongs. It is not a profound film though it does dip gently into theideas of 'the beyond', but there is something about the honesty of itall that makes it s a satisfying evening of entertainment. Grady Harp

I like movies that are exactly as they claim to be. "Charlie St. Cloud"is just that, a romantic drama, nothing more and nothing less. There is nothing profound, although with a few thoughtful dynamics,it's just the story of a young man (Zac Efron) unable to overcome thetragic death of his younger brother until he meets a beautiful girl whoshares his same passion for sailing. The problems are plentiful, with cringe-worthy dialogue, supportingactors who haven't yet learned how to act, no affecting drama producingfew tears, and there just isn't enough to completely hold yourattention. But yet, because it's a simple love story that doesn'tpretend to be grandiose and doesn't force out-of-place tears, I liked"Charlie St. Cloud". I found it to be sweet, subdued and modest. It was also the perfect choice for Zac Efron as he matures in hisacting career. Sure, there are probably a few too many shots of Efronstanding in his jeans and t-shirts staring into the sunset with hislonging, blue eyes, but that is, of course, partly why we would watchit in the first place.Follow my blog Napierslogs' Movie Expositions athttp://napierslogs.blogspot.com

"Charlie St Cloud" features Zac Efron in the title role. Charlie is an up and coming young adult who has just graduated high school and has the whole world in front of him when tragedy strikes. The rest of the movie basically involves seeing how Charlie's life is altered and how he deals with his personal misfortune. Efron, although relying on his eyes to do a lot of the acting, ultimately succeeds in gaining empathy for Charlie's unfortunate loss. This a family film with a special message viewers of nearly all ages will enjoy. The acting in other key roles is right on, including newcomer Charlie Tahan's depiction of Sam St Cloud and Amanda Crew's portrayal of the girl who captures Charlie St Cloud's heart. The supporting characters are vividly brought to the screen by two of Hollywood's best: Ray Liotta and Kim Basinger. Although professional critics didn't provide much praise for this flick, I think audiences will feel differently. The screenplay is well formulated. Due to various emotional events including love, loss, despair and (foruntately) true happiness taking place, I felt the pace of the movie was actually faster than the 1 hour and 49 minute run-time. Bottom line: If you missed it in theaters, check out "Charlie St Cloud" on DVD. Your family or friends will most likely rejoice your choice.

This is not a great film. But, of course, most films that come out ofHollywood are not great. But this is a good film, and worth watching(depending on your tastes) I had never seen Zac Efron before, andfrankly, I wasn't expecting a lot. But he very nicely here. Others mustagree...he has five films coming out in 2012! He's not JUST goodlooking. There's some substance there, and I expect we'll see quite abit of him over the next few years.I also was not familiar with Amanda Crew, but she was quite good as thelove interest in this film. The other actors do their jobs. The scriptis decent, and there's more to it than a Lifetime movie (which one ofour reviewers said). This film won't end up on my DVD shelf, but I'm glad I watched it. It'sin that Hollywood middle ground of quality. Worth a watch.

Charlie St. Cloud (1:39, PG-13) Â fantasy: supernatural; 3rd string;originalIt's entirely possible that Zac Efron can really act. We may neverknow. He always plays the same character: a good-looking, sensitive,semi-credibly athletic, Boy Scouty high-school kid with Clairol-modelfloppy hair. He could do it in his sleep. He could do it on speed. Hecould do it on Ritalin. He may be able to do it after he's dead, andthey just prop him up and let his corpse go thru the motions.Speaking of which, here's what we know from the trailers. Charlie St.Cloud's kid brother Sam was killed in an accident, but Charlie hadpromised to play catch with him at dusk every day, and the kid's ghostkeeps showing up expecting older bro to keep his word. HonorableCharlie does exactly that, as a result of which he drifts away fromreal life, which now notably includes a romantic interest, formerclassmate Tess Carroll (Amanda Crew), who wants to sail her slooparound the world and wouldn't mind Charlie's company on the trip. ButCharlie can't let go.Guess how this turns out. Final answer? Exactly right! You win! There are a few additional wrinkles that you can pick up by actuallysitting thru the whole movie. One is that this game of catch has beengoing on for an hour a day for over 1800 days now, and even after allthat time neither kid can throw a baseball worth a damn. Another tidbitis that Charlie is able to talk to other dead people besides Sam. Also,he's artistic. And really, really sensitive. (Did I mention thatalready?)So that leaves us with the only real dilemma posed by this low-wattagewould-be tear- jerker: mawkish or maudlin, mawkish or maudlin?Sam is played by the young actor Charlie Tahan, and even while watchingthe movie my mind kept drifting off to thots of what the on-setreaction would be when Director Burr Steers said something like"Charlie, you stand over here."; who, really, did he mean, the actor orthe character? If the movie doesn't engage you enuf in the plot to keepthese kinds of distractions from creeping in, it's not a good sign.Kim Basinger and Ray Liotta are also in the pic, in separate scenes, for just a tad longer than it took you to read their names off theposter. There's nothing egregiously offensive about this movie, it's just notworth seeing.

So this is about as 'deep' as Hollywood dares to go nowadays, especially when flaunting the acting chops of its 'beautiful', 'maturing' lead? I'd heard pretty decent things about this and it was....just ok. Seemed like a cross between ORDINARY PEOPLE and ALWAYS, or maybe a GHOST WHISPERER episode. What really got me though: the annoyingly 'cockney' friend of Zac's who's sole purpose seemed to be to give the film some London shabby-chic of the Russell Brand variety. There was never any explanation why some kid from London was digging graves and care taking at some remote Maine or Northern California seaside village!! Maybe the book explains it. I'm just so sick of these English actors being cast for no good reason and then they amp up their 'accent' (real or not) to 1000 db above normal (I'm talking to you, Rachel Weisz!). And the end was SOOOOOOO predictable.

This movie was better than expected since I didn't even know whom ZacEfron was. I thought he did a good job as the title role and not tomention he has a really cute face. Charlie is involved in an accidentthe summer before starting college. He actually deadlines, before hisheart beat comes back, which is the explanation as to why he has asixth sense ability. He is very tormented as he lost someone close.Skip ahead 5 years, and we learn Charlie never went to college and isinstead working at a graveyard. He lives an isolated life since itrevolves around these cannons going off and time he can spend with hisbrother. He meets Tess and she has a love for sailing as he once did.Something happens to Tess and it's easy to figure out what is going onwhen Charlie sees her again. He uses these messages as a sign that hewas given a second chance in order to save her.FINAL VERDICT: Entertaining, not to long, is just a good story.

I feel like the trailer was a very efficient summary of the movie, andmissed almost nothing. Not an awful movie. Nothing wrong with it. Just not enough characterdevelopment, not enough plot, and not worth the time. Some of the characters are woefully underdeveloped, such as the woman'ssailing coach. What is his interest, is he a paid employee, a friend, part of her sponsorship deal? It's weird the way his character changesgears very quickly during the one confrontation with Charlie. RayLiotta's character is also a little thin, but let's call that a cameoand forgive it.But the starring Amanda Crew character... I would expect a little moresubstance for one of the main stars of the film. And her line duringthe sailing race early in the film "That boy's just too good!" Come on,who says that? And somehow they went to high school together in a small town, were inthe same classes, are both attractive as runway models, were bothsailing champions who raced against each other, and yet they've nevermet???? And then 5 years later they're like, "You don't remember me, doyou?" Give me a break. As the movie suggests, life is for living. I wish I had gone out anddone something instead of spending ~2 hours in front of my TV withthis.

This was an amazing movie. But if you don't like movies that haveheartbreaking sad parts that stick with you after you leave the theaterdon't see this one. Otherwise you're in for a very well put togetherheart full, and touching movie. At times the plot line is hard tofollow. But I think if you can tell what's going to happen when, themovie maker hasn't done their job. In this case you are hooked on thestory and the acting the entire time. The moments between Charlie andhis brother Sam where very heart warming and also heart breaking. Allthese things are the mark of a wonderful movie. It has a very goodmessage: you can love your family forever, even if they are no longerwith you, but you must also live your life. Zac Efron has come a longway from High School Musical. I think he could go the distance as anactor. The same can be said for his young co-star, Charlie Tahan, whoplayed Sam St. Cloud. He was very convincing every second he was on thescreen. I cried every moment it was intended with him. I think he alsohas a bright future as an actor. I really latched onto them both. Whichmeans they where good at their parts. I give this movie, which willstay with me for a long time, a 10/10.

Overview: Charlie and his younger brother, Sam, are enjoying the last few weeks of summer before Charlie goes to college on a sailing scholarship. Tragedy strikes and Sam's life is lost while a tormented Charlie's life is saved. Instead of going on with life, he lives alone in the woods and starts working at the cemetery. Why does he stay behind? Because he can see his dead brother and promises to meet him every day to practice baseball. Thus begins the story of Charlie St. Cloud, a young man who "stops living" because he can see dead people and does not want to let go of the memory of his brother.Good Content: Charlie's dedication to Sam (alive and dead) is a good example of being a good brother. Even when Sam has died, Charlie keeps his promise to Sam. Later in the film Charlie turns out to be a rational young man as he makes a choice between "himself" and another person's life.Spiritual Content: The fact that Charlie can see dead people is not necessarily creepy. It's more of a psychological thriller than anything. Charlie and Sam have a conversation about what would happen to Sam if Charlie broke his promise and stopped visiting him. Sam is concerned he will "cease to exist". Charlie's life was "saved" by a paramedic who is a strong Catholic. Later in life the two meet and the paramedic asks Charlie why he was "given a second chance to live" and if he will use this second chance for a good purpose. The paramedic believes saving Charlie was a heaven-sent act. He wears a pendant of St. Jude around his neck.Sexual Content: Charlie and his girlfriend Tess spend a night together in the cemetery. Nothing is seen because the camera cuts out right before anything happens but cuts back in afterwards. Same tells a few crude jokes (I only got one of them because another audience member was laughing as if it was a dirty joke).Violent Content: We see some aspects of the car crash that Charlie and Sam are in. We see them while they are in the ambulance-Charlie's face is somewhat bloody. Charlie gets in a fist fight with another young man.Profanity: a total of about seven or eight profane words ranging from h-- to s--Conclusion: Unnecessary elements (such as the cemetery scene, some language) make this a PG-13 film. While the idea of the plot seems "iffy"-a young man spending time with his dead brother-it doesn't really touch on anything spiritual in terms of life and death. Rather, it is more of a psychological, "think about it" film. Borderline tragedy, chic-flick, drama, this film is recommended for mature audiences who are not opposed to somewhat "unrealistic" stories.
