The Rizzos, a family who doesnt share their habits, aspirations, and careers with one another, find their delicate web of lies disturbed by the arrival of a young ex-con (Strait) brought home by Vince (Garcia), the patriarch of the family, who is a corrections officer in real life, and a hopeful actor in private.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine⢠Program (What's this?) The Rizzo family of City Island is keeping many secrets. Afraid they'll be made public, each member is hiding them by telling lies. Consequently, everyone is living alone on an island of fear and shame. The father Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia, "Ocean`s Thirteen," "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "Jennifer Eight") is taking acting classes while supposedly playing poker. His daughter Vivian (Dominik Garcia-Lorido, "The Lost City") has been expelled from school and is stripping at a club. His son Vince Jr. (Ezra Miller, Damien on "Californication") has a crush on the obese neighbor who has a private porn site. Feeling neglected, Vince's wife Joyce (Julianna Marguiles, "Snakes on a Plane" and "Ghost Ship") begins lusting after the hunky convict Tony Nardella (Steven Strait, "10,000 B.C." and "The Covenant") whom Vince brings home from the prison where he is a correctional officer. No one suspects that Tony is Vince's child from a brief affair he had twenty-four years ago. Soon secrets and lies are revealed, leading to dramatic consequences that are both hilarious and heart warming. City Island of the Bronx is a well kept secret. According to the director Raymond De Felita, who is famous for his family dramas ("The Thing About My Folks" and "Two Family House"), many people in Manhattan aren't aware of its existence. The citizens of City Island would like to keep it that way. However, that may change due to the overwhelming popularity of this emotionally charged film that made me both laugh and cry. The film was actually shot on City Island and Manhattan. The cast and crew secretly lived on several blocks of the island, which consists approximately of one square mile. The scenery is beautiful as well as the cast, which was perfectly chosen. I kept thinking that all the lead actors looked like family members. Then I was surprised to learn that Dominik Garcia-Lorido is Andy Garcia's real-life daughter. In fact, they have starred in three movies together. There was a tremendous amount of chemistry between the lead actors and the director as evidenced by the short featurette "Dinner with the Rizzos." Thy all meshed well together. A tremendous amount of talent was sitting around that dinner table. Vince Rizzo is a very likeable man. He is proud of his heritage. He enjoys living on City Island and wouldn't dream of living anywhere else. Vince brags that his grandfather built the house that he and his family live in. He loves his family very much. His beautiful wife is the air that he breathes. The inhabitants of City Island are very proud of their heritage. Those who have spent generations on the island are referred to as clam diggers and new comers are referred to as mud suckers. Vince, like everyone else, has made a few mistakes in his life. One of them was abandoning his son Tony when he was born. It is the darkest secret of his life and now, twenty-four years later, it has come back to haunt him. However, this is not the only secret he has been hiding from his family. The other is his dream of becoming an actor; he's afraid his wife won't support him. Maybe not, but he has a right to tell her instead of lying about going to poker games that are not happening. The children, who sense there is a lack of trust among their parents, are afraid to tell the truth themselves. They, like their father, feel they will experience rejection. Therefore, the lovely Vivian doesn't tell her parents she has been expelled from school and the comedic son, Vince Jr., doesn't tell them he has an attraction for obese women. While Vince Jr. is spying on the neighbor, Joyce is spying on the muscular convict Tony. You must watch the deleted and extended scenes. During the last scene, when Vince is in acting class, he gives a tearful confession about lying to his family. I think this scene sums up the entire theme of "City Island": Open, honest communication is important for keeping a family together. City Island seems like that fantasy place where the happy families live. Every family can live on their own City Island if they truly love each other and aren't afraid to express it. "City Island" is highly recommended for those who love heart warming, humorous family drama. Anchor Bay did a wonderful job of presenting it in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.78:1. It has English subtitles for those of us who are hearing impaired. Other poignant dramas from Anchor Bay that I highly recommend are: "Sunshine Cleaning," "Bart Got a Room," "Last Chance Harvey," and "Henry Poole is Here."Joseph B. Hoyos

Hilarious, tragic, and brillaint, Raymond de Felitta shows he can make a dysfunctional family look innocent at the end. A heartwarming film.

The Rizzos are a family with secrets. Head of the household Vince (Andy Garcia) works as a prison corrections officer, but his secret wish is to become an actor. Rather than confiding his dream to his wife, Joyce (Julianna Margulies), he tells her that he plays poker once a week, but he is really taking dramatic lessons.Vince also has another, darker secret. He has an adult out-of-wedlock son, Tony (Steven Strait), conceived prior to meeting Joyce. Because Tony's mother was a "psycho bitch," he abandoned the boy before birth, but now discovers him to be a "resident" in his prison.Vince's legitimate kids also have their problems. Daughter Vivian (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) lost her college scholarship and now, unknown to her parents, works as a stripper. Son Vince, Jr. (Ezra Miller), on the other hand, skips school regularly and has a "thing" for grossly overweight women. So that the young man can get an early parole, Vince decides to bring Tony into his home. [Neither Tony nor Vince's family knows that Vince is Tony's father.] About the same time, encouraged by his acting partner (Emily Mortimer) who has her own secrets, Vince auditions for a major film and his clandestine behavior convinces Joyce that he is having an affair. Further misunderstandings in the household bring all secrets out into the open.Written and directed by Raymond De Felitta, CITY ISLAND is a warm, joyful comedy about a dysfunctional family that finds its way "home".Like LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and UP IN THE AIR, this is one of those original comedies where the people and their emotions are real. There are no "jokes," yet we laugh at the humor of the situations because, though the specifics might be different or less dramatic, we are laughing at the parallels to our own lives. The dialogue is quick and witty, and performances by the entire cast are superb.Perhaps the funniest scene in the picture belongs to Alan Arkin, cast as Vince's acting coach, who at one point rants about how he hates actors who use "pauses" in their work. It is a laugh-out-loud moment.CITY ISLAND is endearing; one of the best, most entertaining pictures I have seen this year.© Michael B. Druxman

This movie intrigued me because of the glowing reviews it received atthe Tribeca Film Festival. I was curious if it would live up to thehype. The entire cast is a delight. The story takes place in City Island, agorgeous setting in the Bronx. It revolves around a family that hasvery poor communication and as a result each member is hiding one ormore secrets.Joyce (Juliana Margulies) suspects her husband Vince (Andy Garcia) ofhaving an affair, while the real reason behind his "poker nights" isquite fascinating. Molly (Emily Mortimer) shines as a whimsical, passionate friend who has her own dark story that unfolds. This is a plot line that includes a fetish, Hollywood, and prison...yetit doesn't veer into the overly quirky. This is a family with realproblems who at the heart of it have sincere love for one another. Itis not a perfect movie, but it is a joy to see how the various storylines come together.

City Island shows us typical family life.Problems between father-motherand with their children.Fatherhood must be so difficult. You have to interested in yourwife, your children.Actually It seems, there is no personally time.VinceRizzo wanted to change that idea. And his idea was perfect.Everybodymust have some special. And we felt lots of comedy moment.Comedy with dram can't be better likethat scenerio. The only thing that I don't like was about the woman who was with Vinceat acting class. Why she left him,I tought about it,Was It reallynecessary ?Anyway, nice work ! I liked that. 8/10Onur KOCATEPE

This movie "City Island" will take any city by storm! Writer-DirectorRaymond De Fellita's engaging & entertainment gem has been transportedto my fantastical island of quality film-fare. Cuban-American thespianicon Andy Garcia stars as Vince Rizzo, a New York prison guard (I meancorrectional officer) who resides in a New York suburban island called see movie title. Vince has always aspired to be an actor but he hasnever told his family of his "wanna-be" thespian affairs. JuliannaMargulies plays Vincent's "good wife" (just had to do it, it was toogood) Joyce; in reality Joyce is not too good and has smoking passionsof her own, but nevertheless she is the fervent mother of the Rizzoclan. Ezra Miller plays Vince Jr., the Rizzo teenage kid that has somehefty passions of his own that are unknown to his family. DominikGarcia-Lorido, Andy's real-life daughter, plays daughter Vivian; acollege student whose financial tuition difficulties have stripped herof all her money so she decides to be a stripper, of course notproviding that naked truth to her family. And then we get a strait manenter the picture, that would be in the form of Steven Strait whoportrays Tony Nardella, a convict prisoner who Vince takes under hiswing to the Rizzo residence because of a deep secret; to be strait withyou he just might be Vince's lovechild. Emily Mortimer plays Molly, alonely acting student who Vince befriends. And we even get another AlanArkin sighting in a dysfunctional family film, which is always awelcome. Arkin plays Vince & Molly's acting teacher. All this Rizzosecret madness is wrapped up into a convoluted, but yet, engagingnarrative that you will most certainly adore. All the performances arefirst-rate! But the acting-god father of the group is definitelyhighlighted by Andy Garcia's charismatic & whimsical starringperformance as Vince Rizzo. He belongs in Oscar Island at next year'sAcademy Awards with a Best Actor nomination. Marguiles was marvelous asJoyce, and Strait was straight as an arrow with his thespian work asTony. And of course, much felicidades goes out to Writer-DirectorRaymond De Fellita for his comedic-delicious functional script on adysfunctional New York family and his functional direction of theside-splitting narrative. So my friends, grab on to your cinematicpassport and get on that pleasurable movie cruise to "City Island".***** Excellent

This is the comedy version of a kitchen-sink problem movie, circling around Andy Garcia as a middle-aged NYC cop who really wants to be an actor. It all comes together too patly in the end, but everyone is good in it, and it has a fine sense of place.
LMC (04 May 2012)
Read the reviews and saw clips but was thinking this movie would never breakout of Manhattan. Glad it finally did. It's this year's Juno or Little Miss Sunshine with a dab of the Shakespeare, such as "12th Night" or "As You Like It," where the audience uncovers secrets before the characters find out, thrown into the mix. Andy Garcia's Bronx dialect takes a bit of getting used to and the movie is a bit slow in spots but well worth the effort. The script is witty, laugh out loud funny and still touching, plus locations are lovely to look at. Performances are all 1st rate, with Julianna Margulies and Garcia standouts along with Steven Strait, who reminds me of Eric Bana. If you suspend belief just a bit this is a great movie for the over 30 crowd who are sick of slasher, slapstick and just plain stupid movies. It's a movie you can see more then once.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine⢠Program (What's this?) This is the story of what happens when a family doesn't tell the truth, when they hide dreams and fears from each other. This mistrust builds more mistrust and deep resentment. The plot of this cute story is already described in the synopsis by Amazon. It's a family with secrets and false suspicions, from sex and porn addictions, cigarrettes, and hidden dreams. Although Andy Garcia shines in this role as Vince Rizzo, a prison guard and acting student of a curmudgeon of a man played by Alan Arkin, other stellar performances also complete the personalities. Wife Juliana Margulies plays the bored, frustrated houswife too bitter with resentment to think clearly about her husband. Her suspicions run amok, causing Vince to withdraw more into his secret life. Emily Mortimer, the daughter, moonshines as a pole dancer for money after smoking away her college scholarhsip and son Steven Straight satisfies his sexual desires with the obese neighbor. All these odd ball characters come together, though, through a former prisoner who Vince invites into his home for a month. (Why he brings this man home becomes clear later.) This young man, with a reputation to rebuild, is the only one who can see all the people with an unbaised viewpoint. He finds himself in unplanned and precarious situations, learning the true characters of the rest of the family, and suffering a few bruises along the way. It is through his actions and words ("Tell them the truth!") that the family is brought back together with perhaps a predictable subplot. The end result of this family drama is quite surprising, and the end is where Andy Garcia's true talents come to life. As Vince says in the end, "I was lucky."Add to this the filmed-on-location of beautiful Long Island Sound. This is a heart-warming and believable story about stifled dreams, second chances and emotional honesty and worthy of family viewing.

I had heard that CITY ISLAND was good, but I was not prepared for howgood it turned out to be. Individual story lines for each member of avery loving family are laid down, and through the brilliance of writerRaymond de Felitta, are tied together warmly and satisfyingly at theend. As I watched this film, I kept thinking of Fellini's AMACORD storyof a family that loves one another, warts and all.Andy Garcia, always good, was exceptional here, as were JulianaMargulies, Steven Strait and Ezra Miller. The story, as noted above, and direction by Raymond de Felitta was sly, subtle and ultimatelysatisfying. It's a cliché but I actually did laugh and cry, andsometimes at the same time.CITY ISLAND is simply a gem of a movie. Don't miss it.

This movie was a total surprise - the story was SO funny and entertaining. I enjoyed the quirky situations this family found themselves in due to their fears and protective dishonest creativity - very clever. I highly recommend - very well done.

A dept. of corrections officer has one of his jail birds(who might be his own son) work at his NYC home as his handy man installing pipes. The handy man quickly becomes more than a janitor and learns everything he can about the officer's quirky family.Later he spills the beans on them for leverage. The officer too has a side job of his own as an actor and takes acting classes to everyone's surprise.Hillarious film in a film production.Grade C+ for correctionsSim "The ref"

This is a terrific film, a testament to the brilliance ofactor/producer Andy Garcia. It's got it all -- quirky but lovablecharacters and a great plot with twists reminiscent of the comedies ofOscar Wilde (very clearly updated, of course). As far-fetched as itmight seem, it rings true from start to finish. Can't wait for morefrom writer/director Raymond De Felitta. It's smart, touching, hysterical, and trumps just about everything I've seen in months. Likeeveryone else, I don't know why this is running under the radar. AndyGarcia plays his role like a fine violin -- and he's totallycaptivating. All the actors deliver, and every moment is a treat. Idon't know when or if it will get a wide release, but if you get thechance, see it while you can.

Some people who have lived in New York their entire lives, have nevereven hear of City Island. Why is that? It's a lovely small island nextto The Bronx. Sounds like a great set-up for a Sundacey comedy, right?Well City Island fires on all counts. It's a smart little comedy thatnever seems cheesy or forced with brilliant acting and a great script. There is a conversation about ten minutes into City Island between thefour members of the Rizzo household and dinnertime. It starts frombeing an innocent "Parents are always right nonsense", then whackscreep in. Finally, it explodes into this huge argument with peopleyelling back and fourth to each other. This is just one of the manysharply written scenes in the film. It's flat-out hilarious. Cut and dry. The cast uses the colorful scriptand are directed right on the perfect note, and give you laugh afterlaugh after laugh. The direction as I mentioned is just right. Itdoesn't butcher the material by exaggerating the laughs, it workscalmly and has a head on its shoulders.Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies (who have great chemistry together)lead the marvelous cast. Garcia is wonderful with his role and iscomedic gold. His best comedy work to date. Julianna Margulies can playanything from Alicia Florrick to Carol the nurse, now she takes onJoyce Rizzo. She about steals all her scenes with a hurricane of aperformance. Emily Mortimer will charm the birds out the trees with her performancehere. She's so good here without the great comedic bait that the othercast members have. She's so darn cute and lovely. Alan Arkin has a bitrole too and does a fine job with teaching acting while acting. All thekids here are excellent too.During your viewing of City Island you will smile until your cheekshurt. Not only is it very entertaining, but also has a head on itsshoulders. It's so sharp with fantastic acting. Sure to be one of theyears best; 9-9.5

Very Funny! This whole family is funny. I like the fact that everybodytalks like New Yorkers. The funny parts are at the end. Also the wholeissue with Vince Jr. having a sexual fetish for fat women. That wasfunny. I never knew very many people with that kind of fetish. therewas a scene where he went in to the local IGA. WAs that actually agrocery store? I never know that there was a real place called "CityIsland". It is actually a neighborhood in Bronx New York. I don't knowmuch about the place. The movie seemed to be stereotypical of middleclass New Yorkers. Most people in New York and New jersey talk likethat. This was one of the funiest movies that i have seen for a fewyears. All of the antics by the characters were hilarious! Andy Garciawas at his best in this movie. So were the co-stars. The ending partswere among the funniest as well as the rest of the movieI would givethis movie five stars out of five!

I don't think competent indie directors are in any short supply; whatworries me is the state of "independent" screen writing. Where are thepassion projects? Where are the radically unconventional andanti-commercial controversy-magnets? Narratively and comedically, wecan do better than "City Island."See, the time has long since passed that art house film-making wasabout getting big ideas on the big screen. Maybe as consumers, thatbusiness model has lost its value given that weird, offbeat, andcounter-mainstream content is readily available on home video or at thepush of a button. Now, especially for the little guy, it's all aboutinking a distribution deal, which means independent films have a fewlooming successes over their head. If you want to generate studiointerest in an independently financed project, buzz films like "LittleMiss Sunshine" and "Juno" are exactly who you want to be compared to.The movie businessmen factor those comparisons in heavily whenformulating their equation for the bankability of your indie. For filmmakers, this seems to mean that "Little Miss Sunshine" and thelike are to be used as roadmaps in writing their films, with readymadearchetypes to be pilfered for maximum profitability. You can't tell meyear after year that filmmakers are just burning to tell the story oftheir quirky, dysfunctional familiesÂIt's just an insofar successfulbusiness model, and I'm tired of it.The exact reason I go to the art house is to see filmmakers take risksthat Hollywood wouldn't, and when you take that dynamic away, you'releft with bland, marginally distinct stories that have little to noreason to be told. What's going on in "City Island" works, to anextent, from a directorial standpoint, a visual standpoint, and aperformance standpointÂbut from a screen writing standpoint, you shouldbe able to generate a compelling list of reasons why someone would wantto sit through your movie. If "Andy Garcia" and "Alan Arkin" make yourtop three, your story probably needs work."City Island's" story is about as complex as your average half-hoursitcom. The Rizzo family's inability to communicate leads to 'comic'situations and misunderstandings, like Garcia's patriarch keeping theprofile of an adulterer so he can take acting classes, his collegedaughter's soon to be not-so-secret strip gig, or his smart-aleck son'sfetish for plus-sized women. Their vices are so pedestrian that Icouldn't possibly care how they work them out.The dialogue isn't any better. It's often considered tacky when thetitle of a film is spoken aloud, and "City Island" devotes an entiremonologue to itÂAnd if even Emily Mortimer can't sell it, you'relooking at a rewrite situation. "City Island," she says. "The two wordsstand in stark contrast to each other," and proceeds to explain exactlyhow. For God's sake, really? You think I don't naturally comprehend theironic dichotomy of the title? I hate to be the one to have to tell youthis, but it's not clever. It's indulgent and condescending. But I'm being a little harsh. There's nothing especially wrong with"City Island" other than that it's creatively defunct. If you haven'tseen a dozen movies like it, maybe it comes across as charming. For methough, Raymond De Felitta's film feels calculated where it should feelhuman. The Rizzos don't feel like four real people, they feel likesalesmen hawking their artificial lives directly to a studio whosedefinition of "independent comedy" is as rigid as "horror" or"western."

Well, you maybe won't believe that this movie really IS brilliant ifyou are only 30 minutes or so in. At least I didn't.I actually got bored by the multiple - but at first not very promising- story lines going on. But I like Andy Garcia, I like Emily Mortimerand after all it had a very high rating here.It got better though, and in the last 30 minutes or so, when everythingstarted coming together, I watched almost with my mouth open andsometimes I had to laugh really hard. And while Andy Garcia is a pretty good actor in general ... BOY is hegood in this one !! I predict an Oscar nomination for him this year, noI am SURE he will get nominated for this role! So, all I am saying is: Just give it a chance and sit through it. Youwon't regret it and you will end up LOVING it !!!

It would not surprise us, if a year from now, Andy Garcia and JuliannaMargulies are up for leading actor and supporting actress awards alongwith Raymond De Felitta for this screenplay which he directed and maybeeven with the picture itself being nominated for one of those shinnytrophies. We are presented with what seems to be a light- hearted storyabout a working class somewhat quirky family living on City Islandwhich is actually part of the Bronx in New York City. Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia ) and his family live in the house his grandfather builtand he works in a Westchester Prison as a corrections officer. JuliannaMargulies plays his wife Joyce Rizzo, with a perfect Bronx accent andattitude in stark contrast to the radiant, cool and collected "GoodWife" whom you may have seen her in the television series of that name. They have two children, a daughter who is supposed to be away atcollege but ends up pole dancing in a club, played very well by AndyGarcia's real life daughter actress Dominik Garcia-Lorido and a son(Ezra Miller ) who has an appetite for things on the large side. Thebiggest hidden secret comes from the Garcia character who has a side tohim which gives this veteran actor an opportunity to show the fullspectrum of emotion from anger to tenderness. His character as do theothers show growth and change as well as revealing their innerfeelings. Alan Arkin plays a character that he knows as well as anyonecould and not surprisingly nails that role. There is a measured, exaggerated quality to all the people in the movie which allows somegood comedic moments A climatic scene with the entire family includingtwo additional characters played by Steven Strait and Emily Mortimerall interact for at least several minutes and is orchestrated extremelywell with a palette of emotions from laughter to tears which sums upthe experience we believe you will have with this outstanding movie.

The level of discord reaches new heights within a dysfunctional familyafter a convict becomes a house guest. Felitta does triple duty aswriter, director, and producer and excels on all fronts. His script issmart and funny, and the film is so well paced that it just flies by.Garcia has arguably the best role of his career and turns in a winningperformance as a blue collar worker who dreams of becoming an actor.Margulies is sexy as his disgruntled wife and Mortimer is charming asan aspiring actress. Each family member is given an amusing subplot, including Miller's fetish for feeding fat women, and everything comestogether in the funny finale. This one is a delight.

If you haven't seen much of Andy Garcia's work (which I hadn't) "City Island" is a film for you. He is terrific as Vince Rizzo (a corrections officer, not a prison guard...please!) whose secret passion for acting coupled with a chance meeting with an inmate brings a cast of characters together that weren't necessarily out of central casting. The Rizzo family fights, makes up, fights again and all of this is made possible by Garcia and a first-rate supporting cast. The fact that Vince's teenage son has a passion for ultra fat New York women adds to the dysfunctional wonderment of the Rizzo family."City Island" was recommended to me by a friend and it turned out even more loveable than I had anticipated. I highly recommend this film for its true emotional delivery and terrific performances by its cast members.
