Soon after her return from a business trip to Hong Kong, Beth Emhoff dies from what is a flu or some other type of infection. Her young son dies a few days later. Her husband Mitch however seems immune. Thus begins the spread of a deadly infection. For doctors and administrators at the U.S. Center for Disease Control, several days pass before anyone realizes the extent or gravity of this new infection. They must first identify the type of virus in question and then find a means of combating it, a process that will likely take several months. As the contagion spreads to millions of people worldwide, societal order begins to break down as people panic.

"Someone doesn't have to weaponize the bird flu. The birds are doingthat." Beth (Paltrow) has just come back from her trip to Hong Kongwith a little cough, two days later she is dead. Her husband Mitch(Damon) is in total shock and comes home to find his son dead too. Thevirus is starting to pop up all over the world and the world'sgovernments are racing for a cure. I think that this is another moviethat will depend on your expectations on how much you will like it. Iwasn't looking forward to it at all and my girlfriend was totallyexcited about it. I really liked it more then I thought I was going toand she thought it wasn't as good as she hoped. Granted that can besaid about any movie but there is so much that happens in this moviethat talking about it at all will ruin the enjoyment. She said"Outbreak" was better (I haven't seen that), but to me this is a verygood movie that is well worth checking out. Overall, I really liked itmore then I thought I would. I give it a B+.

When one thinks of the most nightmarish scenarios that can happen tomankind, whether it's terrorism, earthquake, hurricane or what haveyou, a pandemic is the most scary of all. It's unpredictable and deadlyand before you know it, everyone you care about is dead and societycollapses as an end result to the deadly outbreak. What Contagion does is present to the audience how shockingly real thiscould happen in real life and it's plausibility is what really gets toyou the most. It's a situation that almost immediately fills you withdread and hopelessness as countless lives are lost by the deadlybiological onslaught of one of the dark aspects of nature. A tale ofman VS nature, Contagion is packed with thrilling suspense, characterdynamics(though admittedly a bit thin) and an intelligent andwell-written plot. What really got to me is how real this movie makesan outbreak of a deadly disease so convincing and compelling. Itportrays both the good and sadly true, dark aspects of human nature assome are in competition for the spotlight of being the first to attemptto rid the disease, while some only want it for taking care of lovedones in places few and far between.Despite being an action thriller, It felt like an independent film withan art house/quasi mainstream feel. Very unique that this film tookthat approach while also giving it oodles of substance on which tothink and reflect on the various issues that are presented. It givesenough, but also lets the audience figure out things on there onwithout being beaten over the head with information that viewersalready know well about.Contagion is one of the most well-written and gripping thrillers that Iever seen. It's smartly directed and well-written and has a plot that'sso real that you can literally feel it. There are other films that havestory elements about diseases, but this one takes the cake out of themall that will have you thinking for a long time after the credits roll.

One would think that the last thing we need is another outbreak movie. But that's not the case when the latest of the genre is directed by thealways interesting Steven Soderbergh. Contagion wins for this yearsmost ridiculously impressive cast lineup, as it is an ensemble pictureabout a deadly viral outbreak that affects the entire world. We followvarious characters like a man who loses his wife and step son to thedisease. We follow various doctors who work to stop the virus, alongwith CDC officials who must control the spread and influence of thevirus. The whole film is a tightly woven dramatic thriller thatpresents a lot of characters and a lot of ideas, but keeps them all inline and pulls its story off very well. It's not always easy to keep an ensemble cast straight, especially whenthe main plot of the film is run by subplots from the variouscharacters and their stories that continue throughout the film. Thestories weave in and out of each other at times, but often they are allseparate, just lead by the same main plot of a viral outbreak affectingthe entire population of the world. Thankfully, Contagion interweavesits characters and story lines at just the right intervals, forming avery structured and well crafted end result. There are essentially fourmain stories that intertwine. There's the father character's story, theCDC, the scientists trying to stop the disease, and a blogger whoclaims to already have a cure for the disease. These four stories getbasically equal screen time and all serve a purpose towards thickeningthe film's plot. The way they work together and separate is impressiveand makes for a very strong overall narrative.Soderbergh takes a very minimalist approach to Contagion, steeringclear of anything flashy or exaggerated and avoiding over-dramaticrelationships and big budget set pieces. This makes Contagion a veryunique experience and something much different from your typical viraloutbreak flick. It does lag in spots as the film attempts to stretchout certain things without doing anything flashy. The film takes a verylow key and eerily monotone approach to its storytelling. It seems tochoose the simplest solution to things which in turn makes it a morefascinating and much more realistic feeling than something glitzy andspastic. I certainly feel that Contagion paints the best picture ofwhat would actually happen should a serious outbreak like this occur. This, of course, makes it all the more frightening.Contagion is certainly a film worth seeing. It takes a much differentapproach to a genre we thought we were so familiar with. Soderbergh'spoignant direction and Scott Z. Burns' sharp script give this film agreat atmosphere, and the incredible cast lineup makes it all thebetter. It is undeniably slow at points, but when you put in thecontext of a film of this quality it doesn't matter nearly as much. This is a great way to kick off the fall season for film.

I had high hopes as did many for this movie, it started brightly enoughand then I spent the rest of the movie waiting for something to happenthat would be thought provoking or exiting but it never came, the movieis shot beautifully and the characters all play the roles well but thestory meanders from one plot to another with none of them being a mainfocal point the movie just seems to get lost, there are no conclusionsto any of the possible stories, then it just seems to end? possiblepower struggles are left unexplored, the small man against thegovernment where the small man just gives up? even the hunt for theelusive vaccine is given only a token scene, the young love against afathers wishes where the teenagers listen and stay apart? if you wantan exiting movie in the this genre then watch The Andromeda Strain orOutbreak if you want a movie with no definitive purpose with lots ofsub plots that never go anywhere(but why would you) then watch this

Contagion is a film put together in a couple of hours to make somemoney. A real lack of any storyline. there are many things that don'tmatch up for example SPOILER When the disease spreads, a camera shot isshown of airports around America and the world empty. Yet later on inthe film when Dr. Leonora Orantes (Marion Cotillard) is free from theChinese people that took her there is a scene where her and a collegeare in a packed airport full of people!!! THIS DOESN"T MAKE SENSE!!!!A lot of the film is filmed in a documentary style. And really does notbring up any riveting or interesting questions that it should whentalking about human beings selfishness in times of desperation andsurvival. Didn't like it not much to it, was expecting more

You can pretty much expect a good movie from Soderbergh. This wasn'tgreat but it was definitely watchable. Nothing blockbuster about it,not worth paying full admission price for, but if you're into this typeof movie, you won't be bored. You'll be entertained. It does its job onthat front but nothing happens that's so big or major to tell you torun out and see it and shell your money out for it. Matt Damon ispretty solid with his acting as always. I'd have thought they'd explorethe subplot of him being immune to the virus a little more than theydid. They could have did the same for the fact that his wife wascheating on him. We find these things out pretty quick but none of thatexposition is really used to move the film along like it could havebeen. Would have been an extra layer the film could have benefitedfrom. What it's really all about is simple: what happens when a new virus isintroduced to humans. This showed everything from start to finish butnot necessarily in that order. Some people, hell, MOST people will getlost in all the terminology because it has a layer of intelligence toit. If you don't know or understand what they're saying on screen, thenyou'll be lost and you'll lose interest. You gotta have a brain tofollow and truly understand this movie and that might contribute to itnot being as successful as it could be. At the same time, for you smartfolks out there who avoid dumbed down American cinema, this might besomething you'll enjoy. Something to get you back into a movie theater. No explosions, special effects, or car chases like the typicalmovie-goer needs to enjoy a movie.Jude Law played a hypocrite but said a lot of conspiracy theory talkthat rings true. Not all disease is natural. A lot of them are man-madeand exist solely for people to profit from the sale of vaccines andother drugs. Jude's character touched on these subjects but to myknowledge, no movie or documentary I've ever seen has put that subjecton the forefront. In a world where more people are dumber, poorer, andunhealthier than ever, it's time to shed more light on these things. Some people have said this movie is racist towards the Chinese. If thefilmmakers had chosen any other race, some idiot out there would sayit's racist towards them too. People, it's a movie! I've heard otherpeople talk about how utterly horrible this movie is. This movie wasn'tmade for certain types of people but the trailer was made in such a wayto get their money. I like how they kinda worked backwards in showinghow the disease began. The last scene tells the tale.Overall, the acting and storytelling is solid. It's a rundown of howthe government and the public reacts to outbreaks and how they spread. It wasn't anything over the top but I'd say it's a somewhat realisticportrayal of how such events would take place. Trailers make it seemlike this is some sort of post-apocalyptic movie but it's not. Not evenclose. I think this movie could have been even more accurate with an Rrating and a longer runtime. Some people will be offended by thereferences and portrayals of animal testing. The solution to that?Human testing. Doesn't make sense to test human drugs and products onanything other than who it's meant to be used for. Spare the animalsand use people as guinea pigs instead of actual guinea pigs. It wasn'tthoroughly explored what the effect on the animal population was in themovie. It never is, is it? Animals spread disease, we kill them enmasse. When humans spread disease why don't we do the same thing? Toomany of us as it is. Sometimes a cure isn't the cure to what ails us.I give Contagion 6 out of 10 stars because it could have been so muchmore if there was a more defined and dramatic subplot. As it stands, you're just watching the path of a disease from creation toimmunization on the human population. This could have been a close to 3hour epic but that ain't what they were going for and that ain't whatit is. It's not as thought provoking as it could be either but it isentertaining for those with the right mindset. Your time won't bewasted. There is no big payoff other than seeing how the disease cameto be. That part alone shows the simplicity of how death perpetuatesitself. Not much to say for the characters. Everyone did their part butthe disease, the plot, is what drives this movie. The disease is thestar.

First off, I'll admit I've never been a fan of the Unseen Enemy. Iparticularly don't care for the scary virus or disease that's killingpeople off like flies. As far as I'm concerned, we've already had waytoo many of these and certainly don't need another. Aside from that, this particular film is downright drudgery which the producers try toenliven with spurts of loud hard-driving music designed to imply thatsomething really BIG is coming. But it never does. We just go from onevictim or group of victims to another while waiting for the CURE thatwill save the world in the nick of time. Not a thriller in any sense ofthe word and there's no suspense at all despite the pounding score. Ifeel that all these actors deserved better and they should have heldout for it. Elliot Gould was completely wasted in his short role. theothers were wasted in their longer roles. A very sad waste of time andmoney.

Contagion was good, but don't let the trailer fool you. It's not anaction-packed post-apocalyptic thriller. It's like a... slow moving, suspenseful drama. The movie focuses more on how ideas can be moredangerous than a virus when placed in the wrong hands. The movie iscertainly more realistic then most virus/contamination flicks, meaningthat it doesn't go into some overplayed, everyone drops dead likeflies, kinda deal. The movie's main focus is on how we should or shouldnot deal with such a crisis. It's not your average disaters movie. No explosions and fights, verylittle violence. If anything This is more a thought provoking set piecerather than an actual movie. There's lots of emotion and mellowdramaand I'd be lying if I said it was captivating. However, against allodds, and even with it's flaws you still take something out of it inthe end. And I believe that's what the writers intended. It's not aboutthe story. It's really not. It's about the idea. It's about the "whatif?" scenario. It's about that lingering thought in the back of yourmind when the credits roll. You come out of not knowing exactly what tothink. Did you like? Did you hate it? You're honestly not sure. All youknow is it stuck with you for some reason. This isn't the first time Matt Damon has been in a movie with thatlingering effect. The movie "Hereafter" sort of leaves you with thesame feeling at the end...This is a movie that cannot be truly explained in words aside from whatI have already done. All I can say is, watch it. And when you startwatching it, completely erase your mind, don't try to think about ittoo much, don't go into expecting something. Just watch it. Regardlessof how bored you get, watch it until the end. Then ask yourself how youfeel afterwards... You may be surprised to find that you aren't reallysure...overall rating: 6/10

Nothing spreads like fear. The new sci-fi thriller, "Contagion", starsseveral well-known actors such as Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon,Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Winslet. BethEmhoff (Paltrow) starts to get sick on her way home from China andassumes it's just a cold or the flu. Once her husband (Damon) witnessesher having seizures, he realizes that this disease is much moreserious.Eventually, people all over the world are getting sick and many aredying left and right. Dr. Ellis Cheever (Fishburne) decides to put ateam together to stop this epidemic and find a vaccine or a cure. Manyscientists are involved to find a way to stop these germs fromspreading. There are numerous 'main characters' who are focused on.There does not seem to be a single lead.My description of the storyline seems vague, but that's because this isall that the movie is about. This story has been covered so many timesbefore that "Contagion" ends up being unoriginal and, frankly, boring. It felt as if nothing happened. Many questions were left unanswered.Too much time was spent on the disease itself, rather than on thedevelopment of the characters. Because there are so many characters, all of the side stories seem insignificant in comparison to the bigpicture. But the big picture is too simple. The acting was decent, buteach character only had a couple scenes. In my opinion, too much talentwas wasted with this film.Furthermore, "Contagion" is quite disgusting. Many scenes aredisturbing and you walk out not wanting to touch anything. This film isnot enjoyable at all and not very well done. I give it a 4 out of 10.Don't bother wasting your time.

Not in the traditional sense that is. Because events are happening, just don't expect it to be something that will follow too much of a bigdrama you might expect from Hollywood. There are quite a few big nameshere and I guess some things may seem like a cliché to some people. Butit's tough to make a movie about something like that and not touch somenerves or do something that people may expect.Still the movie has impact (even if it is slow driven and may feel"senseless") and is very well thought of. It may not satisfy your everyneed and may not fulfill what you'd hope for, but if you reflect on it,you may be able to see the real value of it. On the other hand, I cansee that people really hated it (it's Soderbergh and should therefor beexpected)

I went to Contagion expecting more than I got. I was told that thismovie was realistic in its portrayal of what might happen when a viralpandemic comes to the world. I didn't find it realistic at allespecially since we have gone through one recently with H1N1 and wehave all seen first hand how quickly the CDC can work. If this moviewasn't about realism then it should have been about interestingcharacters but it wasn't about that either. Though I like most of theactors in this movie and their acting the parts that they were given toplay were poorly done at best and worst at most. The only reallyflushed out character was Matt Damon. The worse character was poor JuddLaw, what in God's name were they smoking when they created hischaracter. I've heard and seen opportunist but this was ridiculous. This movie was slow and boring and could have been so much more.
Fr. Ryan Humphries (19 May 2012)
This film should have been amazing. The acting was quite good. Itshould have been everything "Outbreak" wanted to be 15 years ago. Thetragedy is that it took exactly 10 minutes to realize that it was justa propaganda piece - oh no, if we don't go green the world will end...The story is dull beyond imagination. At no point was there even thevaguest sense of suspense. Everything was entirely predictable and theworst part is that unlike other "post-apocalyptic" films that have theplayed the hum-drum slow moving suspense to great effect (I'm thinkingof "The Book of Eli" and, to a lesser degree, "I am Legend"), this justlaid flat. You'd really do better to save 2/3 of your time and just getMichael Moore to direct something for the History Channel. Please, please don't waste your time.
David Perry (18 May 2012)
Get the worlds best/highest paid actors and throw them on a 24 hournews channel for a dragged out length of time and you have Contagion. With Jude Law's accent sounding like an Australian Dick Van Dyke and alaughable closing explanatory scene was a real let down.Action scenes are non existent and i did not become close to any of thecharacters as the internal stories are so poorly thought out andexecuted. It is a real shame as with a bit more care and attention this moviecould have been so much better. It does start off quite promising withclever little close ups off work surfaces and objects that thecontaminated public have touched. Then once the scientific andpolitical factors come in to play it turns in to a struggle to stayawake.Avoid like the plague!

Contagion is a film about America's reaction to a deadly virus-bornedisease that spreads within days. ProsThe script was good and did not make the movie boring or monotonous. The reactions of the people were well depicted. And there was a perfectbalance between medical research and political reactions. One could seethe research done in order to present the situation on screen. The intro of the film was very strong. The focus on things that youtouch - the glass, doorknobs, poles in the bus, etc. - that would leadto the spread of the virus helped build the tension. The movie very interestingly starts from Day 2 of the infection and youwonder where is Day 1? Well it comes at the end when the inception ofthe virus comes into picture. The cast was carefully chosen, I must say. The acting was differentfrom the typical larger than life Hollywood characters. The characterslooked real, panicked and sometimes overreacted in situations that theyfaced. However, more was expected of Matt Damon, he was a bit ofdisappointment. It was not a movie for his fans, as he looked fat, oldand had a very limited role. The rest five roles were very interestingespecially of Dr. Ellis Cheever played by Laurence Fishburne. The dialogs were serious but amusing at the same time, especially theones used by Jude Law or at him.ConsMore was expected from the film, as it suddenly jumped from Day 31 toDay 131, from the time the vaccine is tested to the time it comes tothe markets. Also since the movie talked about the effect of the viruson the world in, I felt covering Europe, India, Australia etc. wasneeded. The research conducted by countries apart from America was notincluded at all.In a scene where Marion Cotillard reviews the footage of the Casinovisited by Gwyneth Paltrow (Mrs. Emhoff) just before contracting thedisease comprised of different cuts and angles which are not possiblefrom the CCTV perspective. The movie had a lot of potential to be edited in a non-linear mannersince a lot was going on at the same time. But I guess the makers wereafraid of taking the risk. The VerdictI won't call the movie a must-watch but I would still recommend it forone time watch. It gives us a break from the usual over the topHollywood cinema that we are used to see, without making it look like adocumentary.Acting and Cast : 9/10 Script : 8/10 Direction : 7/10 Cinematography :6/10 Editing : 6/10OVERALL RATING : 7.5/10

If you are contemplating a germaphobic lifestyle, I would say you needto see this film. It is a recruitment film for the sterile agenda. Itis all about the genesis of a disease and how it can wipe out millionsof people because of the way we live and how we interact with oneanother. The movie is well done but an ensemble cast is sometimes hardto watch. I find myself interested in only some of the characters. Thisstory places several characters as interpreters of the main star, thevirus. As a concept this movie was great, it was executed well butoverall for entertainment value this movie rates only a sickly yellowlight. For more of this review please see it onhttp://fatsamuraireviews.blogspot.com/

This is a refreshing movie, unlike majority of productions out ofHollywood these days which requires individuals to remove their brainbefore entering the theater, in this movie the viewer actually has topay attention and engage the movie. The plot is mature and cohesivewith little details that require more of the viewers. The characters donot give in to popular stereotypes and are almost wholesomepersonalities. The movie is over 100 minutes but I felt it could haveeasily been longer without any detriment to the engagement of theviewers, in fact I though the ending could have been more descriptive. It is one of those movies that at the end you don't want it finishedjust yet. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes to think. If yourattention span is less than 30 seconds don't bother.

I heard about the movie from an internet forum and didn't even saw thetrailer, just watched it. I think it was really a good movie because itshows us the reality! Yeah if someday when a virus come out, this movieshows us what will happen. Yeah some people tries to cure it, but whenthey did found the cure, millions would be dead and for what? With theglobalization all the threats come out and people became desperate. Theparts that showing the looting was really scary, all people tries toreach what they can. Also the staff was great, I mean from Cotillard toDamon every star was perfect. Law acts really good and the man hebecomes in movie was really impressive, because we all know there arepeople like this in the world. I just did not like the US point ofview, I mean it is really boring, everything happens in only US andonly US government and military could save the world like Europe orAsia do not even exist. Anyway like I said, it is not an excitingmovie, it is not like you are watching Jason Statham's dumb movies butit is perfect as in documentary sense.
spotlightne (16 May 2012)
Contagion is an incredibly tedious, slow, talkative movie that getsnowhere.A virus sweeps the world. Characters are introduced, you don't learnanything about them as people. You don't care about them.Matt Damon walks around as if he's busy learning the script for hisnext film. He looks totally disinterested. And who can blame him? It'shardly a part to get your teeth into. Not that Matt can act anyway. Also, we have Gwyneth Paltrow in an almost non speaking role. KateWinslet rushes about trying to look concerned, and trying even harderto do a convincing American accent. She fails miserably on both counts. But worst of all is Jude Law who plays an Australian journalist. He'strying to do the accent too, and he fails. Sounded like a Cockneybarrel boy's accent gone wrong. All in all a dismal movie that should be avoided. Well, I watched about55 minutes then gave up. Whizzed through to the end and even the endingwas boring.1/10.

If it wasn't the actors, i would stop watching it buy the minute 30! Atthat time i felt this one wouldn't get me no where, and it didn't. Itwas supposed to be a drama??? I wished they all died just to see someaction and stop earing that clocking music over and over and overagain! So, if you are looking for a Sci-fi, this is not appropriate. Ifyou are looking for a thriller...LOL. If you are looking for a drama, then watch it! At the end, you see you'll have your own drama becauseyou've watched for an eternal 100mn! This movie should be classified asa fictional documentary that has no start and no ending. This is allsome mixing rubbish about the press and a deadly disease! If you liketo stare at your plain bedroom's walls in the dark of the night forabout 2 hours, then this movie is excellent to you, otherwise skip it.Unfortanetly i had my vaccine! Rated 2 stars just for the actors (noteven the acting)!

I came to this film off mixed work of mouth and was interested to seefor myself how it plays. With loads of famous names involved, adirector I like and a sobering subject, I had decent hopes for it to beat least worth seeing and I knew it wasn't going to be an Outbreakstyle thriller with against the clock races to catch a monkey or ahelicopter standoff against a military bomber. As a result I wasreasonably prepared for the film and not put off by how matter-of-factit was in its delivery. Staying mostly away from hyperbole and falsedramatics, the film takes us through the spread of the virus across theworld, with the challenge of containing, managing and responding to it.Although there is some emotion to be found in some specifics if youwant it, and there is a certain horror to the scale and the numbers, mostly the film doesn't chill as it could and certainly doesn't haveurgency to it  what it has instead is a coldness and proceduralapproach. Personally I liked this and felt it worked better than theother extreme of lots of wailing and famous actors getting melodramaticdeath sequences. The downside of it though is that it feels likereading a bullet point summary of what would happen over the 150 or sodays; so we get the hesitant response, tick; we get the misinformation, tick; we get the lines for limited supplies, tick and so on. Like abullet point list on a document, it does a great job of giving you thebasics but none of it is expansive or has much depth as a drama and Ican see why some viewers would have major problems with this  I didtoo but I took it as the side-effect of an approach that mostly worked. The cast list is starry but nobody really hams it up and mostlyeveryone underplays as much as they can to good effect. At times havingfamous faces in tiny roles was a little distracting but mostly itworked and it totally avoided the sense of old celebrity pals hangingout together at having fun together  a feeling these celebrity heavyfilms often can have. I think some characters got too much time  inparticular I felt that Law's blogger was given too large a chunk of thetime considering his small role in the global situation  the guy whodiscovers a way to manufacture the virus is in the film for seconds(despite being played by Gould) but yet a blogger is front and center? Not sure why but it didn't really work. Soderbergh's direction iseffective and nicely clinical, it makes the approach of the film and Ienjoyed his handling of it.Contagion is not a brilliant film by any means, nor is it the one tocome to if you're expecting high octane thrills, but it is enjoyable ina very clinical cold way. It is like a bullet point summary of a globalviral outbreak and of course that creates limitations in severalregards, but it also creates a strength in doing what it does.
