A Cinematic Landmark

The feeling lingers. The images come back, not to haunt you but toreassure you. There is an element of hope within the melancholicsadness of this M. Night Shyamalan masterpiece. There hasn't been sucha limpid definition of love since the world was still innocent. Limpid, yes, that's the word that comes to mind, remembering the shy lopsidedsmile of the extraordinary Chris Messina. Who could possibly havepredicted that Chris Messina was such a giant, unquestionably destinedto a legendary career. Well, Shyamalan I guess. Shyamalan seems intotal control of his canvas. Every frame is a moment, the silences areexquisite, the humans are as humans are and we're allowed to dive intotheir hearts without tricks without illusions. Raw, limpid, poetic andabove all, true. I can't wait for the world to meet Detectives Bowdenand Markowitz in this startling M. Night Shyamalan universe.

Well done horror, especially for a claustrophobic person

If like me you suffer from claustrophobia, you will appreciate thismovie all the more. Being stuck in a broken lift is bad enough, butwhenever the lights go out bad things happen, pretty much a badscenario. Yes, it has been done before, just recently with THE LIFT,and it was pretty similar really, but for a low budget film set in alift time didn't drag too much. Acting was good in my opinion, I likedthe casting, all the characters looked suitably dodgy. The directingand cinematography were spot on. A few 'boo' moments which you have tohave in any movie that purports to be a horror/thriller. I never sawThe Last Airbender, but i did see his last offerings the Girl in theWater and The Happening, both movies were okay, but a far cry from hisglory days. I think it would have been interesting to see what he wouldhave done as director, but the director in charge, Dowdle did a solidjob. Hope to see some of the actors from this movie in the mainstreamin the future, as always, I am a solid horror movie fan so I give thisa 7. Deduct 2 points if you are not a fan of the genre.

Good movie, but...

I'm giving this movie a 6 out of 10, even with all the bad rep. Ithought it was a decent movie. However, I think the storyline is thesame as Phone Booth. Lets see, instead of having one person trapped, there are now multiple. The killer is no longer a sniper, but thedevil. As the story progresses, people who attempt to interfere die.All the deaths that occur are blamed on the trapped person/people(except the elevator dude in Devil, who drops to his death). There isan officer that shares his emotions. Also, this officer first doesn'tbelieve anything and in the end understands the situation. In the end,the guy trapped(in Devil the last man standing) admits his sins/faults,by doing so the killer lets the person live. The killer in both moviesdisappear after confronting it's victim. I mean the budgets were justabout the same.

Mediocre, but I expected little more

A fairly mediocre film, with quite competent direction in places, especially the surprising variety of camera angles used in the liftitself. Felt very much like an M Night film, even down to "expositionMexican", the security guard who burbles on about Devil this, Devilthat, while the cast of five in the lift do a quite good job in places, and I will admit that I had no idea until the end who Ol' Nick actuallyis. The title sequence, upside footage of the city, which travels intothe building, was very good, and most of the film is also filmed verywell too. Shame bout the script/idea not really having the legs to holdme for the full length of the film.

A perfectly serviceable little horror flick

A perfectly serviceable little horror flick. Great graphic for the posters and DVD covers though, with the red light through the elevator door creating an inverted cross image.

Don't yank his SAG card...yet. A step in the right direction.

This was an M. Night Shyamalan project, and as such one is able to makecertain predictions: someone's past will be referred to in thebeginning and then shown towards the end (apparently to extract maximumirony, but generally I find that it bashes you over the head with thepoint), in the first few scenes something will be revealed that willhave ironic bearing on a critical plotpoint, someone will display aclear belief in good and evil by which others if inclined can set theirmoral compasses and this person will be outspoken about it, the mainprotagonist will have suffered in a way that makes them jaded and fullof self doubt, and there will be a twist at the end that may or may notmake sense (viz a vie aliens come to take over a planet 2/3 coveredwith water and a water saturated atmosphere only to find water islethal to them. Advanced myopic idiots?).That being said, nothing about this film surprised me, the soleexception being that this film was better than The Last Airbender(although stubbing my toe very hard on the coffee table early in themorning was a more pleasant experience than that film, so that doesn'treally say much ). But that's OK for I didn't go to see this film for asurprise. I went to be entertained. It delivered, to a degree. This film was well executed in terms of cinematography, acting, andscore. The cast was well picked and delivered a solid performance. Theinitial tracking shot, although a trifle cliché (yes, we get it. Thisworld is different than ours, an off kilter world where anything ispossible), was cool, but very heavy handed, as a lot of elements inMNS's films. For me there was no suspense as everything unfolded as I'd anticipated.I wouldn't say this film was big screen worthy (although that's where Isaw it, matinée. Full price for an MNS film? Never again!). It's moreof a wait for DVD and cuddle up with a loved one on the sofa kind offilm. My initial intent when writing this review was to out the devil andergo the merited spoiler tag, but apon review no one spoiled The SixthSense (arguably his best work) so I'd prefer not to be that guy. I'drather express the mixture of intimidation, disgust, and anticipationof regret I felt when I read the garishly large lettered text in thebeginning of the film that proclaimed itself as being the first of the"M. Night Shyamalan Chronicles" (ego much, M.?). This blatant displayof self aggrandizement seemed inappropriate with his batting averageand made me taste my previously ingested breakfast a tad. It inspiredanticipation, just not the good kind. More of the "skip futureinstallments at redbox, ignore NetFlix recommendation" variety. Not enough to be redeemed for The Last Airbender, but a watchable onthe smallscreen step in the right direction.

Is the Devil, not just the deepest part of Man?

"My dear brethren…the loveliest trick of the Devil is to persuade youthat he does not exist!" Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1864). Directed byDrew and John Erick Dowdle, and based on a story by the ever mysteriousM. Night Shyamalan, 'Devil' consists of a traditional story containinga battle between good and evil, set within the confines of an officetowers elevator in contemporary Philadelphia. Five strangers aretrapped in an elevator together, and one of them may, or may not, bethe devil (a being which is the personification of all evil). It is aninteresting, and new take upon the premise that the devil may be"walking among us," and while it is competently filmed and at timesdutifully suspenseful, it lacks the intelligence and the inventivenessto the keep an audience hooked for the full eighty minutes of itsrunning time.Five strangers, consisting of a soldier (Logan Marshall-Green), a tempsecurity guard (Bokeem Woodbine), a cocky mattress salesman (GeoffreyArend), a young woman (Bojana Novakovic), and a pensioner (JennyO'Hara) are all seemingly innocuous people who enter an elevatortogether in the '333' office building. They are all there for differentreasons, but when the elevator refuses to respond to basic maintenanceand the patrons of the suspended steel box start to become agitated andaggressive, they must try to deduce to whom is to blame for theviolence that is surrounding them. While outside the elevator,Detective Bowden (Chris Messina) and his partner Markowitz (JoshuaPeace) alongside the tower's security guards Ramirez (Jacob Vargas) andLustig (Matt Craven), must also try to figure out what is happeninginside the small, enclosed space, is it an aggressive attack by one ofthe strangers who has something to hide, or are there supernaturalforces at work, gaining pleasure from torturing five apparentlyinnocent citizens. The film begins with a voice-over narration which details the story ofthe devil, and how he would purportedly occasionally take the place ofa living being to torment those around him. A somewhat redundant touch,as the film itself gradually rolls out the story as the minutes tickby. From then on in, after a brief sequence involving a suicide, thecharacters board the elevator. Nothing is known about why they are inthe building, what occupation (if any) they hold, and most importantlythe audience does not know their names. They are essentially facelessbeings until gradually the audience is fed bits and pieces ofinformation to try and guess the identity of the perpetrator, playedout in the same vein as any other mystery thriller. What separates thisfilm apart from the rest however is the duelling story lines takingplace between the strangers in the elevator and the Detectiveinvestigating 'their' (?) potential crimes.Simultaneously the audience is able to follow the two detectives asthey impartially try to understand what is happening in the elevatorand who (if anybody) is perpetrating the crimes inside, while thecharacters inside the elevator increasingly become subjective towardseach other. While most importantly, neither side can influence theother, creating a constant atmosphere of tension throughout the film asyou wait to see whether the investigation will conclude successfully orwhether the investigation will be halted due to the lack of livewitnesses involved. Aside, from this however, the rest of the filminvolving secondary characters, seems to feel out of place, and slowthe general pace of the film down, while also detracting away from themysterious atmosphere of what is happening both in the security boothand in the elevator. While the acting by Bowden, Marshall-Green andBojana Novakovic manage to keep the film on a professional level andstop it from failing on a most basic level (if a film is primarily setin one enclosed location, then the actors involved need to be able toportray to audience their different, and various contrasting emotionscompetently enough over a short space of time).'Devil' is an adeptly made film from a story by one of the mostnotorious filmmakers currently operating at the moment in M. NightShyamalan (due to his recent 'critical' failings). While it doesn'tcontain a final-act twist of 'Sixth Sense' proportions that willcompletely revive the horror-mystery-thriller genre for years to come,it is also an enjoyable film that isn't completely predictable withinthe first five minutes of screen-time if you can look past its visualflaws.

Confession is good for the Soul

This movie is narrated from the stand point of Ramirez (Jacob Vargas), a gentleman with a spanish accent, this lends itself nicely to folklore and the old wives' fable that is about to be told. He is a security guard, that works in the building that is in question. He has been told this story, about to unfold by his mother, however, the settings and events would have been somewhat different. But, the general pattern is the same.As an initiation, there is usually a suicide that takes place at the scene as the devil enters the location. The concept is that the devil, at times will manifest himself as a human to torment certain evil souls before they are killed and taken off to Hell.In this particular scenario, an elevator is the chosen venue to torment the unfortunate souls. Five persons, 2 women and 3 men enter the elevator, one is the devil, but no-one except the devil knows this. The contenders are as follows:[1] An ex-soldier that has a spotty criminal record. He has a stash of tools hidden in the Men's Room and did not bother to sign in with security at the front desk.[2] An Old Lady that has stolen the receptionist's purse. She arms herself with pepper spray.[3] A Young Lady that is on her way to meet her lawyer to clean out her husband financially, who owns the security firm that has the responsibity for the building's security.[4] A temporary Security Guard that is on his second day on the job. He also has a criminal record, and is known for violence.[5] A Salesman that has gotten a considerable amount of wealth through a Ponzi Scheme. One of his victims has committed suicide.Bodies start to drop in the elevator as the movie progresses. However, each time the lights in the elevator go out just at about that time, so the damage is done under the cover of darkness. It is a "Who Done it" in close quarters and fingers point wildly, as fears and emotions rise.Although this film is centered around the elevator, there is still enough shots in and around the building to keep the interest and variety going. The film is very suspenseful, and most of the actual violence is hidden with only the aftermath being made visible. This is a descent movie in terms of its production quality, and it will keep the viewer interested right down to the ending, which is as usual quite surprising and with a twist.

Floor Six: Fine Characters and Good Plots...going up!!

M. Night's Back in the game in his tale of evil whacking the passengers of Elevator Six of a Philadelphia high rise building.Beginning with the mysterious suidicde from the 35th floor, Detective Bowden (Julie and Julia's Chris Messina) is dragooned to become a sinister force's latest audience as it picks off an ecclectic passengers of express elevator six and to defining the metaphysics of evil after his family's killing at the hands of a hit-and-run driver. From the disorienting opening sequence to the final narration by Jacob Vargas' Ramirez, M. Night continues to bring his audience through the screen to his world with clarity and stregnth reminding us why we go to the movies. Devil's plot races forward like a controlled explosion, never boring the audience (which, when I saw it, was me.) And while the tale may seem tired, the presentation was not.I enjoyed Mr. Messina and the Elevator Cast's performances. The terror for the passengers is felt clearly with each time the lights go out and the reactions become more and more irrational and hysterical, just as it would become for any of us trapped in similar circumstances. Mr. Messina's detective follows a clear path from logic to faith which inspires those who have none. I enjoyed his journey and his presence in this picture. I last saw him in Julie and Julia and dismissed his performance in favor of his co-stars. However, after Devil, I will watch more carefully for anything with him in it.The onion peel, when the connections within the elements of a story unravel to reveal something, was executed routinely but brilliantly. Even I, a jaded film watcher, was surprised when the core came out. This is the mark of a great writer, as M Night is, despite Hollywood's need to define greatness with financial success. Bravo, guys!! This one's a keeper!!

Kept together right till the last few minutes

After the disaster that was The Last Airbender, this movie got a lot ofbad press and lessened expectations because it was associated andmarketed as a product of the mind of M.Night Shyamalan.I guess it worked in its favor to an extent because the movie is surelymuch better than what it was expected to be. And, Night can restassured that the producer and writer gigs are gonna keep on coming hisway even if the director ones will not. What i liked about the movie was that it did not rely on gore to tellthe story even when the subject matter gave it ample opportunities to.The atmosphere was dreary and the lights-out moments were handled well. The movie was kept together right up until the final few minutes whereit was revealed who the devil is. Then it suddenly got a whole lot moreamateurish. That was when I thought Night himself could have done theending better. Here, it just felt like the director said: "OK. Devilexposed. Bring on the clichés. Repenting - check. Self-sacrifice -check. Compassion - check. Devil backs off - check. Reference to God -check. OK, roll the credits." What i did like about the ending was thatthere was no divine intervention. The ending gave the message that thepower to defeat evil lies within each one of us, if only we get pastthe lies we tell ourselves, get rid of our selfish ways and truly, sincerely apologize for our wrong-doings. In short, the power to defeatevil is within each one of us.Well, no matter how amateurish the movie felt at certain points, onething is for sure: we are seeing many more of the Night Chronicles incoming years.

Had a lot of promise but....

I saw the movie 'Devil' yesterday night at 12. The start was prettysolid with build up of what is in store for us for the next hour and ahalf. The plot on the whole is very much similar to many other movieswith people stuck on an elevator and danger lurking around them. Inthis case the danger is 'the Devil' himself. With a promising start, myexpectations rose a little bit but as the plot started developing therewas nothing much the film could offer. It had all the charm to becomesomething unique and amazing but it rather was like going through themotions towards the ending we all knew. The major drawback I found wasthe minimal character development. Though the suspense of not knowingwho they are added to the mystery, it did not help us in relating toany of them or more or less care for them. The acting was good andespecially I liked Chris Messina, and it was more like a surprise tosee him. The big let down for me was the ending which was supposed tobe incredible in MNS movies.I am giving this 5 out 10!

great product

This review is from: Devil [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This Blu-ray movie arrived on time and in perfect condition. It is a great film for those who enjoy psychological thrillers.

Hmm.

Beginning to thing he stole his first few scripts from a dead guy, orhis contract with Satan has expired. Really? Spoiler alert this movieis not meant for human consumption. Really? Shyamalan, save me a tripand punch yourself in the face for me. Let me save the rest of you froma terrible movie experience. I will provide further adjectives to meetthe minimum length requirement. For example, contrived, lame, formulaic(although not by the book MNS formula), weaksauce, dumber than Lady inthe Water mating with The Village, each movie MNS involves himself inis exponentially lamer than the previous, etc. Your time has past. Thiswas just The Stink.

Are You Kidding Me?

The title of this review is what I found myself uttering as the credits started rolling to this farce of a movie. This is not a real movie, it's more like a college film school project that was never intended for mass consumption. The fact this movie received real funding, a huge advertising budget (I remember being BOMBARDED by ads for this movie pre release), and was shown in real movie theaters is baffling to me. This movie is as bad as it gets when it comes to the art of movie making.Even though M Night did not direct this movie, clearly at this point everyone (well, everyone who is honest with himself/herself and is not a relative or best friend) knows M. Night Shyamalan was a one trick pony. 6th Sense, great movie, and seemed to be a very promising start for a then unknown director. Since then, that director has directed movies that range from okay (Unbreakable, Signs), to bad (The Village, Lady In The Water), to downright awful (The Happening, The Last Airbender). I think it's a case of Shyamalan believing his own hype, and resting on his laurels. What happened to the guy who directed 6th Sense, where did that director go? Well, he's probably gone for good, and that was really the only great movie he had in him. The fact he associates himself with garbage like Devil means he not only can't direct a good movie any more, but he doesn't even know what a good movie is!The plot for Devil is very thin, a bunch of strangers stuck in elevator in a high rise building, slowly being killed off every time there is a flicker to the elevator lights, leading to a momentary blackout. All of this is being observed by building security through the use of CCTV cameras in the elevator, and eventually the police, who are all too incompetent to get into the elevator in time to save them. One of the security guard's very quickly figures out what's happening, and somehow knows it's the Devil himself, the big kahuna, El Diablo, Satan, Lucifer, the Antichrist etc., who is responsible for the deaths of the elevator inhabitants. Along the way we're treated to a voice over monologue about why ole Satan operates the way he does, and the remainder of the film is about the many failed attempts at rescuing the poor schmucks in the elevator. All the frustrated detective can do is somehow try to figure out who's doing the killing through the use of background searches on each of the elevator captives.I'm okay with thin, threadbare plots, IF, there is an enjoyable movie that comes from them. Problem is, Devil is not enjoyable, in fact it's downright boring, and idiotic. None of the characters trapped in the elevator are likeable in the least, and therefore no emotional bond is developed by the audience. Their deaths mean nothing to us, since we don't like them or get to know much about them anyway. To the contrary, we enjoy watching these people die, and gleefully await the next one. I suppose it was the intention of the director to make them unlikeable, since why would the Devil want to pick off a bunch of nice people? Oh, and how ridiculous is it the Devil chooses to do his dirty work in an elevator of all places? How random and absurd. We also get a detective who quickly buys into the story of the security guard who thinks it's the Devil causing all of the deaths. The ending, oh the ending, look up the word "ridiculous" in the dictionary, and there will be a short bit on the ending of Devil. The whole movie is stupid, pointless, poorly acted, boring drivel, that never once invokes a moment of fear or apprehension. All of the deaths take place in pitch black anyway, so it's not as if they would scare us. Only one of the character's is actually injured before they are killed, via a random bite on the back. Again, hardly scary or terrifying. We get one, fleeting glimpse of the Devil in his true form, and that's it. The only other time we see Satan, is when he posses the body of a victim he killed earlier in the movie??? I'm not sure what the Dowdle brothers were attempting with Devil, but if it was to make an engrossing, thought provoking movie on the nature of good and evil, and what it means to be a good human being, and what being a "bad" human being means, well, he failed miserably. Instead what we get is a shallow, shell of a movie that might have gotten an A as a college level film school project, but a big fat F as a major motion picture. Based on Devil, I would say these "up and coming" film makers have a long way to go before anything they do is cinema worthy. However so much garbage is released to cinema's these days I guess that's not saying much.Devil is another in a long list of movies I've caught on cable tv for free, and therefore didn't actually pay money to see in a theater, or through the purchase of the video. Still, it was also one of those movies that made me angry for the time wasted to watch it, time I'll never get back, time that would have been better spent doing ANYTHING else. You have been warned, proceed purchasing at your own risk if you also don't have cable tv.

Just a good enjoyable movie.

There's only one way to enjoy this movie and that is to push play andtry to not figure out the ending, you might be able too however this isa movie where it's just fun to let the film makers take you for a ride.I was very unsure about this movie considering most of the film doestake place in a small elevator it's hard to keep the interests of youraudience.John Dowdle's last film was "Quarantine" which I enjoyed but found his"Devil" to be a better all around movie. I will probably watch it againbecause there were a few little things that I almost didn't pick up onon my first viewing so I'm sure there are other things that I missed. The cast is effective in there roles, this isn't the kind of movie thatrequires or should even have a big blockbuster cast it would actuallytake away from the character's these actors are portraying.I was fortunate enough to be in Chicago and catch an early look at partof the film and sit down in a Q and A with the director and writer ofthis film. One of the things they discussed was the "Night" Series thatM. Night Shyamalan is coming out with where apparently he has ideas formovies and giving them to younger directors for them to basically playwith. Who's career has taken a sad turn for the worse with his last fewmovies. However this was his first of the series and if this one showsthe quality of what this series will be I will be looking forward tothe next one.If you go into this with a open mind you'll find a good entertainingmovie. Which is one thing I think companies are forgetting about we goto the movies to be entertained.

Finally, M.Night Gets It RIGHT!!! ---Spoiler Free Review

So, I was a fan of M. Night but his last few movies had missed the mark with me. He was the absolute worst choice to direct Avatar: TLAB since his strength is not action oriented stories, but rather suspense thrillers. With the Devil, you get an incredible story that matches up well with the M.Night's directorial talents. Overall, the story and plot are flawless. He plants a seed in scene one, it grows in scene two, and is ready for a brillaint harvest in scene three. What I mean is that all the story elements, plots, characters, motivations, etc. etc. are all seamlessly woven together to produce a masterpiece. Its hard for a movie to be perfect, to run on all cylinders, to be a flawless gem. Well boys and girls, I'm here to say that this is such a movie. It could not be a better film, it really couldn't. Great setup, nice rising action, brilliant climaxThis is a must see movie, so glad I got it!!!

Meet Joe Black - On Steroid Overdose!

I'm so glad M. Knight Shyamalan is back. "The Happening" was a realstinker. And don't get me started on "Lady in the Water". "Devil" hasrestored my faith in M. Night. This movie gave me the goosebumpsseveral times throughout. Although the ending seemed a littlepredictable, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There were only a fewmoments in the film that seemed contrived. All of the actors werepretty believable. The ending, although predictable, was fun andcreepy. I'm not easily creeped out, but this one did the trick for me.I still lay awake in bed thinking about this one, a lot like I did with"Sixth Sense". It's no Sixth Sense, mind you, but it's pretty darngood.

Fantastic concept

The concept is fantastic, five people stuck in an elevator one of whomis the devil. Unfortunately the film ultimately fails as it conforms tothe predictable by the end. Most of the movie however is great andreally plays on the claustrophobic setting of broken elevator.Performances all round were pretty strong. However, one thing I loveabout movies like this, movies where people are forced into a situationin which character backgrounds are revealed for the betterment ordetriment of the protagonists is the tense atmosphere that builds oftenmaking for some great dialogue scenes. This film has this, but it couldhave been played upon much stronger, for example I think it would havebeen cool if allegiances within the small group changed with eachindividuals changing assessment of their predicament . A few things also bewildered me a little, for example the religioussecurity cam operator. There is no way they would have kept that guyaround, especially after he start saying prayers into the elevator, especially after people have been killed in said elevator! My biggest gripe with this film however was, as I said earlier howpredictable it becomes by it's ending moments. *SPOILER* the person notbeing really dead trick was used in Saw and I personally seen it comingand was let down a little by it. Next is the whole super natural thing. Now this is more of a personal thing but, I think the piece could havebeen much darker without all the deaths, yes they were pretty cool, butI think to have one death and then each character being crushedphysiologically by the situation and their personal flaws would havebeen darkly twisted, especially if the snake tongued trickster walkedaway unscathed and scott free. Okay this kinda does happen, but thefact the devil has to physically harm everyone just seems weakening, the devil is an entity that could talk the weak into horrifying acts. Over all a great Saturday night movie that will have you guessing. Justlet down a tad by some predictable moments.

KentaroK (28 April 2012)

A great, modern mystery thriller

This movie could easily get 10/10 for enjoyment. Especially if youwatch it with a group that is also into dramas, mysteries, supernaturalthrillers. However, I only gave it 8 because of a few minor details, which I can'treally go into without spoiling. Perhaps I'll explain in the forumslater.Meanwhile, this is why you should see the movie: 1. You can re-watch it afterward and gain new perspective 2. It is a mystery , exactly "whodunit", for most of the movie, so ifyou like those type of murder-mysteries, then go for it 3. It has some unexpected twists and dangerous situations 4. It stats up like a simple drama (aside from the very funky opening).5. Zombies! ... well, not really, maybe just one, briefly....
