The elementary school teacher Anna Marchant lives with her boyfriend Bryce in a nice apartment and every now and then she meets her best friends Francine and Nina to drink and talk. When Anna is crossing a bridge to meet Bryce, she sees an infamous serial-killer killing a woman. Anna runs but she is attacked by the killer and she falls off the bridge and hits her head. Anna stays in coma for a week and when she awakes, she learns that she has brain damage followed by Prosopagnosia, a disorder of face perception where the ability to recognize faces is impaired, while the ability to recognize other objects may be relatively intact. The police detective Sam Kerrest unsuccessfully tries to force Anna to remember the face of the serial-killer. Now the serial-killer knows that Anna has seen his face, but she is incapable of even recognizing Bryce and her close friends.

Wow, there are a whole lot of reviews discussing prosopagnosia by folksthat have never experienced this condition but want to speak asauthorities. Shame-shame There are two types of prosopagnosia;acquired and developmental. Folks like my wife, with developmentalprosopagnosia, had the condition their entire life from some unknownetiology and developed coping skills since birth. Those like me, withacquired prosopagnosia, lived a portion of our lives without thecondition and obviously developed no coping skills in advance. Those that cite voice recognition as a flaw in the movie have zeroknowledge of acquired prosopagnosia. Sure the voices are indeed quitefamiliar, but they are coming out of unfamiliar faces. That presentsconfusion far beyond just not recognizing faces. In fact, in my case itinterfered with my ability to develop coping skills. It took me over 10years to overcome this confusion brought on by voice recognition anddevelop real usable coping skills. I have now had this condition forover 40 years and my coping skills are still sorely lacking compared tomy wife's as she developed them throughout her life and neverexperienced what I call being blinded by the face -- letting facerecognition when I was "normal" make living with prosopagnosia thatmuch more difficult.I suggest that everyone who "sees" flaws in the movie see it again. This time with the knowledge that things such as familiar voice, gait, mannerisms, clothing and situations only heighten the confusion whenone first acquires this extremely rare condition. Perhaps it will makefar more sense to those that gave negative reviews about something ofwhich they are totally ignorant.

The concept of this movie, the premise of 'face-blindness' is reallyinteresting. When major characters in the film suddenly change actorsbecause she can't remember what they looked like...that is a reallycool idea and premise. It is the only thing saving this dreadful messfrom being a complete zero. With this unique idea the story is lost andslapped together. The performances are uninspiring and the charactersare boring. It doesn't know whether its a mystery, a thriller, or anaction movie, or even a drama.Milla Jovovich is a Hollywood calibre star in my opinion. She is agreat actress, and has terrific chemistry...usually. In this film, which I can only imagine she did as a favour, she is a complete mess. She looks silly and acts like a B-Movie horror scream queen. Hercharacter is vapid and empty. Julian McMahon plays the tough and angrypolice detective who becomes involved with Jovovich. He has a solidcharacter and does a decent job but the story eventually bogs down hispotential and leaves his character empty. Its sort of hard to pin pointany other performances in the film because the characters change actorsso much. Her boyfriend Bryce seems to change actors a dozen times inthe film so its hard to say who played who the best. It doesn't mattermuch because the film is just so hard to follow and never finds anyspecific path.Director and writer Julien Magnat probably thinks he made some sort ofbrilliant artistic feat. In fact its a mess and I don't know how or whyit got made. It doesn't seem to suffer from being low budget and yetthe ideas in the movie get so skewed and I think the film tries to telltoo much and too many ideas all at once. I think it should have been athriller about a woman tracking a serial killer she can't identify butthat whole premise is completely lost. Skip this so called thrillerbecause its a definite miss. 5/10

*** CONTAINS SPOILERS ***I love the idea behind this film - that a survivor of a serial killeris left with a condition that renders her completely unable to identifyhim - or anyone else. Unfortunately the execution is more than a littleclunky and the plot is entirely predictable. The moment the killer turned up in the "non-killer" role, I said,"That's the killer", even though we had never seen his face.I was also successfully able to predict the demise of her relationshipwith her current boyfriend, and who she would end up with (and why!).Once her new beau had taken her elsewhere, I knew she would end upthere and also figured out there would be one other person whose facewould be one in a thousand that she would always recognise (can youguess who?). I even predicted the showdown and how it would unfold. That said, there are positives - Milla Jovovitch is always fun to watch(although the deaf therapist would have trouble lip-reading her as shenever actually moves her mouth much when she speaks!) and the changingfaces were done smoothly and to great effect. All in all, we're left with an average movie which kills a little timequite entertainingly and leaves you feeling more than a little cleverfor having been able to work it all out pretty quickly. It had thepotential to be so much better, but then, so do many other films...

It's quite unusual in this day and age to stumble upon a horror moviethat emphasizes more on the elements, atmosphere and disabilities ofthe characters than in gore or another one of the endless clichés thathave plagued the genre for years now, fortunately Julien Magnat's"Faces in the Crowd" gives it a shot at telling a story that iscompletely character driven, but not without it's faults and missteps.Anna Marchant (Milla Jovovich) is an elementary school teacher withquite the mysterious attitude, while on one hand she acts like thesweetest teacher and the most devoted girlfriend, she also seemsunsatisfied with the predictability of her life as she seems to havethe whole thing figured out and constantly jokes around with her partyfriends Francine (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Nina (Valentina Vargas), butshe seems unsure whether she really wants to commit herself to sharinga life with her sentimental partner Bryce, whom she lives with and isabout to propose to her. That is until one disastrous night in whichshe decides to walk home from a bar and has to witness a rape andmurder scene that took place at an abandoned bridge by the mostnotorious serial killer in town, as expected, the killer spots her andtries to slit her throat, but she puts up a fight and ends up beingthrown down the bridge and suffering head trauma. After waking up from her week long coma, she notices things aredifferent and obviously freaks out, only to later learn what kind ofbrain damage she has suffered, her physician explains that she isexperiencing a disorder called Prosopagnosia that afflicts her abilityto recognize people's faces, she can't even see her own face in themirror without looking at a completely different woman's face.Anna can't exactly testify against her attacker because her afflictionprevents her from recognizing even her own boyfriend, and to top itall, the murderer becomes obsessed with Anna and stalks her for days. While developing a completely unique environment for the characters tobegin telling a story, Magnat also falls short on the execution, heattempts to put us in the shoes of Anna and feel her desperation as sheis stalked by a serial killer and also tries to add a love interest tothe whole mix, which, in my opinion, is the one element that brings thestory a whole step down. For one side we have a desperate Anna Marchant who isn't in theposition to develop a love interest as she can't exactly tell peopleapart, but also, most of the film they have us thinking that the killermight actually be her own boyfriend, or even the detective which tookthe case , still she decides to fall in love with one that couldpossibly be a psychopath rapist that cries after reaching climax withhis slashed-up victims. They also add another survivor, a traumatizedkid that is so messed up that can't even tell who the killer is despitehaving him in front for months (and a really poor explanation is givenabout this since the kid doesn't have Prosopagnosia). In the end "Faces in the Dark" is a really brave attempt at a thriller,a phone stalking - slasher horror movie, and it barely manages to pullit off by certain elements that are really worth noting, no excessiveor unnecessary gore is depicted, the photography, atmosphere, lightningand sound effects are impeccable, the story has an excellent premise, the acting is surprisingly good, scares are given by justified scenesand not the classic "closing-the-cabinet-mirror-and-the-killer-is-behind", but despite all this efforts, it ultimately has that "could'vebeen way better" feeling to it, and it is because of that missteps thatwe aren't looking at this years sleeper's hit, and it is most likelythat Milla Jovovich (who also is an Executive Producer) won't bereceiving notorious acknowledgments.

Story: After accidental encounter with serial killer, while trying torun away from him, girl (Milla Jovovich) smacks her head badly and endsup with a brain condition known as prosopagnosia = face blindness (it'sreal, google it up if you want to know more). In this movie, it ispresented like - she can distinguish human faces while they are in hersight - but when they walk away and reappear, same people lookdifferent every time. Now, to make the story interesting, killer findsout about this poor girl's brain defect, and starts harassing her. What seemed to be thrilling slasher at the beginning, somewhere at themiddle loses it's orientation and becomes just another movie you can'twait to get over with. Instead of action, you'll have to watch Millagoing to various therapists, subjects to hypnosis and other boringstuff. No scares, no suspense, no blood, no Wes Craven's Scream-likechase scenes. Pity, because I think story had a great potential. Idon't say this movie is bad as you might think from my (trying to bewitty) review title ... but, it's nothing more than an averagethriller.
Girish Winchester (19 May 2012)
Anna Marchant (Milla Jovovich) is primary school teacher who haseverything one could need; a loving boyfriend and basically a goodlife. One day, on her way home she witnesses the murder of a woman. Theperpetrator turns out to be the notorious serial killer - "TearjerkJack/Killer" who cries over the dead women he has killed. He noticesAnna and attacks her. During the scuffle, Anna tips over the railingsand falls into the river while hitting her head and suffering aconcussion. When she wakes up in the hospital, she can no longerrecognize her friends faces. No face looks the same to her twice. Shesuffers from a real-life medical problem 'face blindness' and can'teven recognize her own self in the mirror. The real horrifying part isthat the killer is after her as she has seen his face. But Anna cannotdefend herself since she has no idea what anybody really look like.'Faces in the Crowd' had a highly intriguing premise which wasn'treally exploited. When one loses the ability to recognize faces, theirlife will be in turmoil naturally. Add a serial killer into the fray, you have a hot potboiler of a tale to tell. The film starts out with abang, but then whimpers and limps to the end. Well, the ending wasn'treally dreadful. But still the writing was far too uninspired, whilethe direction didn't add anything to help it. Of all the othercharacters, I found the woman doctor to be highly annoying. She givesphilosophical answers to difficult questions. I suspected who theserial killer would be halfway through the movie and it turned out Iwas right. Its bit of a cliché actually. I know many disagree with meon this, but I have to say Milla Jovovich is a fantastic actress andthis movie actually proved it. She gives one of the best actingperformances of her life even though the writing was lackluster. Shewas the sole shining gem in this movie and made it worth watching. ButI wouldn't recommend this movie to anybody unless you really love MillaJovovich.5/10

We don't get to watch many thrillers lately so I was hopeful about thismovie. It was actually satisfactory enough, the changing faces of thesupporting cast was fun and sufficient to emphasize with Milla'scharacter. If this was a bigger budget movie, it would be delightful tohave some of these faces by more recognizable character actorsdepending on the situation and her disposition towards them. As it was,the film was more like a procession of many extras (note thecollaboration of 4-5 studios). For some weird reason I expected andhoped she would at some point see Philip Seymour Hoffman as herhusband, Luiz Guzman as the cop, Eric Roberts as Lanyon, but of coursethat didn't happen :) I agree with others that the love affair lookedsuperficial and lacking chemistry, but just think (after watching thefilm) how it would be elevated by a clever and ambitious casting ofsupporting actors. On the downside, the suspense level was not really high and the filmnever came close to being chilling. It could have been a much morecaptivating thriller. Sometimes the story of the killer was almost asub-plot and it was her prognosis that was at the forefront, I guessMilla preferred it that way for having more opportunity to display herserious acting skills. My alternative would be to have more scenes withLanyon and also more innovative stalking by the Lurker. That way theaudience would engage better in making guesses about the killer'sidentity and could actually still be amazed by a clever twist at theend. Here is a diversion about the leading actor (well, the movie becamerather dull enough times to give me an opportunity to amuse myself byreflecting on her career). I think Milla is cleverly changing gear, sheis very positively stuck in my mind with the Fifth Element (that waswhen Bruce Willis was a dashing action star) and I noted her acting inthe Million Dollar Hotel as well as her portrayal of Jean Darc. Whenyou come to think of it, she has a remarkably diverse and richfilmography with leading roles in major films while she was very young.Overall however, her last ten years went largely unnoticed by peoplewho are not into resident evil, so now she has the chance to make are-entry as a fresh face who happens to have a lot of actingexperience. In the next few years she could aptly make her mark as thelead actress of noirs and thrillers (a role played by Kim Basinger andMichelle Pheiffer in the last decade). To sum up, an entertaining and somewhat original movie whichunfortunately is not intellectually challenging. Watch it, but withrealistic expectations.

Major spoilers for both Jennifer 8 and Faces in the Crowd.Jennifer 8 (1992): Cop on the edge falls in love with a blind girl, whose roommate was murdered by a serial killer. The killer turns out tobe a cop on the force who hates blind people, because his abusivemother was blind. In the climax, the killer is fooled by a trap, as thewidow of a slain cop gets her vengeance by shooting him, whileimpersonating the blind witness.Faces in the Crowd (2011): Cop falls in love with a girl who has faceblindness. She's the only witness to a serial killer, but she doesn'tknow what his face looks like. The killer turns out to be a cop on theforce. In the climax, the witness is fooled by a trap, as the killerimpersonates both her ex-boyfriend and her new, cop boyfriend. Her copboyfriend shoots the killer, but is mortally wounded and dies.Is it a complete match-up? No. In Faces, the cop isn't "on the edge" --just a bit overworked. In Jennifer 8, the love interest is not amaterial witness, whereas the love interest in Faces is. In Jennifer 8,the serial killer is specifically targeting blind people, while theserial killer in Faces is an opportunistic rapist/murderer. The climaxis also reversed. In Jennifer 8, it's a victim who sets a trap, not thekiller.Could this be complete coincidence? Yes, of course. Many of the tropesused in Faces are significantly older than Jennifer 8, and they couldbe easily considered to be well-established clichés in the serialkiller genre. However, it's difficult not to keep thinking to yourself,"Hey, this really reminds me a lot of Jennifer 8..." while you'rewatching Faces. In the end, I found the similarities between the two movies to be verydistracting. Even if Faces didn't remind me of Jennifer 8, I'd still bea bit harsh on the story, given how many serial killer clichés it hitson the way through the plot. Speaking of distracting, there are somereally annoying product placements, though it's nowhere near as jarringas Will Smith slobbering over a pair of sneakers in I, Robot. On theplus side, the acting and directing are both competent, though neitherreally shines. There isn't really much gore or nudity, despite thesubject matter, so if you're looking for a psychological thriller thatavoids descending into outright horror, this is a good bet. With afemale lead, a romance side-plot, and some Sex & The City-stylecarousing during the girls' night out, I'd say this is the kind ofmovie that might appeal to women, though I think these elements wereintended more to appeal to women dragged to this movie, rather than toattract a female demographic to it.

I wouldn't put a comment on such mediocre movie if I didn't see somevery positive reviews so I wanted to post mine as well as it is veryopposite. First of all the movie is a thriller stereotype made inHollywood and the only thing that supposed to make it different is thatextraordinary disorder of a main character. However, it didn't helpmuch. First of all, using the camera as her point of view brings a lotof confusion to the watcher. Director probably has forgotten that movieinsight of the main character and one of the watcher are two completelydifferent things and cannot be the same. Main character in the movie isfictional and can tolerate fictional insight but we the watchers arereal and we need real insight to follow the action. On the other hand, movie has just several characters totally so it is pretty easy to guesswho the killer is or should I say you can't miss. What I also foundpretty irritating is pretty bad acting of Mila Jovovic. All in all, don't bother if you ask me.

'Faces in the crowd' is the kind of movie that had a great shot atbecoming a great brain-twister in the vein of 'Memento', but it totallyblew it. Prosopagnosia, practically the main character in the movie, isa medical condition leading to so-called face-blindness. In other words- you can't recognise people's faces. All the clichés that come to mindfirst have been used in this movie - a serial killer masquerading asthe protagonist's loved one, a final fight in which the protagonistcan't tell the villain apart from her saviour, the one man whose facesticks to her memory becomes her new lover. The romance part is SOcheesy and SO predictive and on top of everything it has completely nodepth, so when in the final scene she suddenly pops out (SPOILER) 'Ilove you' even a 5-year-old doesn't believe her. The movie is full ofpoor attempts at foreshadowing (the tiny town with a kindergarten ofonly a couple of pupils - i mean, come ooon), tacky Hollywood-typescenes (the final scene in the rain comes to mind immediately),stereotypes (Milla's female friends) and stale acting. To sum up - ifyou value your time, keep away from this movie.

***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*** I really do try to look for the good in amovie...reasons to like it more than dislike it but this movie simplyput way more effort into trying to make the viewer "see through MillaJovovich's eyes" and not enough thought into the entire premise of themovie!Milla Gets attacked and develops, in laymen's terms, Face Blindness.Great and spooky idea for a movie, right? WRONG! She can no longerrecognize faces. Even the faces of those whom she's extremely close toand known for eons. All truly a sad condition for someone to have tolive with but the glaring flaw to me VERY early in the movie was thefact that the condition has absolutely no effect on voice recognitionyet she seemed to have a complete lack of voice recall!!! She no longercould distinguish her own boyfriend's voice from a total stranger's?Puh-LEEZ!Sure, it'd freak me out to hear a familiar voice coming out of a"stranger's" mouth, and for a long time too, but it would make me zeroIN on voices and THEN maybe clothes and mannerisms. This painfullyobvious flaw doomed this movie from the start for me, but still Iwatched. The worst-acting award would have to go to her therapist. The bestacting would have to go to Milla but, sadly, that's not saying much. Her over-stereotypically-done friend calling Milla's character "Chica"throughout the movie made me want to eat my own ears to avoid hearingit even one more time!Sadly, just overall a great idea that wasn't thought out before itscreation. If you've already watched grass grow, ice melt and paint dryand still need something to do? Watch this movie!

Milla Jovovich is my favorite artist. I love it when Milla Jovovichappear in a new movie with a horror-thriller gender (although in myopinion this is not gender horror). This movie reminds me of a similarfilm that has a dementia disease. But it is rather strange, because ofblindness in the face of foreign sounding in my ears. however, thismovie still I can enjoy until the end. I feel this movie could thumbsup for Milla's acting and acting-acting any other actor.Grooves that are easily digested making me give rating 8. This moviecan bring me to feel the 'disease' is in misery. It is unfortunate, because the main killers easily guess (though this movie is not gendermystery). But again, I liked this movie.
j-pc-birchall (11 May 2012)
The only thing this film has going for it is the aesthetic beauty ofits lead actress and the initial shock that the NIP/TUCK guy is nolonger as pimping as one initially thought.Progressively intolerable, irritating and violates one's common senseto a point that one wishes the DVD exploded after 30 minutes.Specifically, the director bypassed the fact that the woman actuallyhas EARS. Furthermore, she is devoid of any oxytocin molecules grantingher the ability to fall in and out of love quicker than a back streethooker. However - The continuous switching of actors to convey the progenitorscondition was interesting. It gave a sense of what it may be like tohave such a disorder. This became the bones of the film and was indeeda suitable platform for the intended story line.
M De Storm (11 May 2012)
It is of no surprise that Milla is on top form with her acting in thismovie, as she was with "The Fourth Kind", no additional martial arts orbutt kicking's in this feature. The film opens with Anna (Jovovich)leaving a cocktail bar after having a drink with friends, only towitness a horrific murder to which she is chased and cornered by thekiller upon a bridge. Accidentally falling into the freezing cold riverwater below, Anna awakens in the hospital with no memory of theincident leading up to her plunge. This is not the worst of it,however, as she is diagnosed with "Face-Blindness"; a condition whichis rarely (If not impossible) to cure, and which distorts the facialfeatures of everyone that the patient sees day after day. One day itcould be a vague face for a man and woman, the next day a completelydifferent face altogether. This does not help when somewhere out thereis a serial killer taking advantage of your "Face Blindness" condition. For Anna, her condition is being dealt with daily, while for her, sheknows who the serial killer is, but with the "Face Blindness" shewouldn't know if that killer was stood next to her at any given moment. Not long after being released from the hospital Anna becomes distressedin the fact that she is waking up every morning to a different man Âbut the same Husband.Self-assigned Detective Kerrest (Julian McMahon of Charmed televisionseries) brings in the strange and weirdness of crossover channels as hetakes Anna to the safe haven island of yeah, Cole Island (Charmed fanswill know that Julian played the character known as Cole in the hit TVseries). Here Anna and Kerrest spend a lot of time together and becomevery close, too, which may or may not help with the case or the findingof the killer. We found "Faces In The Crowd" very well written, thrilling enough tokeep us all guessing on who the real serial killer was, and most ofall, we found the acting more tolerable than first thought  as thereare two actors here, Shanks and McMahon, from television successes Âacting alongside such a strong cinema actresses as Milla Jovovich andMarianne Faithful. The condition which Anna has after her accident is emotionally chargedand at the same time sympathised by the viewer (we believe) as shestruggles with the changing faces and the frustration in which shefeels when the voices of friends are there, just not the friendly warmfaces that she has lived to respect and love not even that of her ownFather.DVD Archive Rating: 8/10

Milla Jovovich as the victim? Wow, after all the films where she kicksbutts and takes names, this is an interesting change, and one thatseems to work well. While there is the mandatory nudity of a MillaJovovich movie (let's face it, the lady is beautiful), I found most ofthe scenes to be unnecessary to the plot. Milla does a good job ofportraying Anna, and her emotions are direct and correct for the sceneshe is in. Julian McMahon is equally good, so the two combine to make acredible match up in this low key story about the hunt for a serialkiller. The photography is excellent and the script is average, so theoverall feel of the show is more suited for the small screen than thebig screen, which is why this started out in Turkey and went to DVDrelease in the US. While I doubt there will be a big following for thisfilm, fans of Milla will enjoy it, as will fans of Julian McMahon, whoenjoys a modicum of interest from his fans from NIP TUCK and CHARMED.(Wouldn't count on a lot of fans of DR. DOOM, Julian, that movie missedthe mark among us comic book, er, graphic novel, fans.) Rated R forviolence and sexuality, this is a film you can pass on or not, depending on your taste for melodrama. Nothing to write home about, butcertainly nothing to dismiss out of hand. Rent it and put it back onthe shelf.

This movie it's like a Jamie Oliver well prepared dish. It has lots offlavors, it's very spicy, the action scenes, dough sometimes repeatedobsessively, are mind blowing and keeps you focused and in search forclues all the time. Another good thing is that, in contrary to otherserial-killer type movies, you don't realize exactly who is the badguy, in this case "Tear-Jerked Jack", until in the last part - 10,15minutes I believe. It also have an original idea using a real conditioncalled Prosopagnosia which actually exists in real life, and builds agreat movie using Milla's Jovovich charisma and talent to create athriller by definition. You can ask yourself how many of us don'tsuffer from this condition and go to different social gatherings werepossibly dangerous people might be. Definitely a good movie!

About 10 years ago we used to watch movies like that mainly on TV asthey were never really exciting enough for the big screen. From thevery beginning Faces in the Crowd leaves exactly that impression of aTV movie you might accidentally come by on a lazy Sunday afternoon onsome local channel. Basically the story is shallow and unexciting, dealing with a little-known medical condition, which is mixed up withserial-killer storyline. The lack of interesting characters allows usto easily predict every bit of the story from the smallest of hints, including who the killer is. Some of the hints I even consideredinsulting to my intelligence as basically nothing was left to theimagination. Hectic events, extremely dumb love story and some verypeculiar police work that allows a serial killer to murder somebody ina night club in front of hundreds of people and then just get away. Thepolice officers, the killer and even the main character are like takenout of a stereotype book as they are so unrealistic that it almostmakes you laugh. I can recommend you watching this right before bedtimeafter a good night out as it is the only time you might see some sensein it!
Kate (07 May 2012)
It was an interesting premise, losing facial recognition, and couldhave been a really good story line, but overall it was very poorlywritten and executed. Too many situations were forced, made to fit themovie rather than actually being a realistic part of the story-line.And the main characters made really poor decisions multiple timesthroughout the movie - the ones that make you think "really? comeon..." The characters that played Bryce all looked similar, so I hadtrouble telling them apart - maybe I've lost facial recognition too.Overall it was pretty hokey - a definite B-movie thriller. I wouldthough like to see a good movie with the same premise.
spikemaze (07 May 2012)
This movie has a very interesting premise: A woman runs into a serialkiller roaming the streets of the city she lives in. She sees his face, but hits her head and suddenly she can't tell people apart anymore. Herboyfriend, her best friends or even an absolute stranger lookcompletely different every time she sees them. Because their faces areunrecognizable to her. Every man she sees could be the killer for allshe knows. And the killer knows what advantage he has.It could have been done a lot better, I must admit. The movie movesalong slowly and it might be difficult to keep your focus when watchingthis movie. But the interesting premise is worth it.The leading actors are also very good in their roles. Milla, JulianMcMahon and Michael Shanks are all strong actors. Sadly the lead menkeep changing in order to fit the premise and this does cause someproblems. Though it's very well done, the changing actors aren't asstrong in their acting as McMahon or Shanks. This ruins a lot.The positive aspect is that the viewer also get the faces mixed up. Ina normal film it would be a catastrophe, but it works so well in thismovie because we become as confused as the leading woman. All in all I liked the film. It wasn't perfect, but I doubt that anyonewill expect this movie to be just that. And the best part is that ifyou then watch another movie afterwards, you might just like me startquestioning every character's face. The movie sticks to you.
TxMike (07 May 2012)
Your personal rating for this movie depends a lot of why and how youwatch it. For the rather simple underlying story, about a serialkiller, it isn't that good. But for how it depicts "face blindness" andhow one might learn to overcome that handicap, it is pretty good. Ienjoyed it. Milla Jovovich is teacher Anna Marchant. As the story opens we see thatshe in fact has a very keen memory, for both names and faces. But oneevening after meeting her friend she is walking on a bridge closed formaintenance and she spots a crime in progress, the serial killer isupon his latest victim. She sees him, but trying to get away falls intothe river, hitting her head in the process. In a coma for several days, she wakes up with "face blindness", the inability to distinguishsubtelties that allow us to recognize a particular face from thethousands we have seen.Part of the ensuing movie involves police working with her to try torecall the face of the murderer, since she is the only one alive tohave ever seen him. The other part of the story is how she is able torecognize her boyfriend, Bryce, by using clues, such as how he isdressed when he leaves in the morning, what tie he has on, etc. When the scene is from the perspective of the audience, not sufferingfrom face blindness, we always see specific actors playing specificcharacters. But when the scene is through the eyes of Anna, the faceseems to change each time she sees it anew. In fact, in the credits itshowed 15 different actors playing her boyfriend, Bryce. Othercharacters are played by up to 6 or 8 different actors. So, as a crime story, I found it just "so-so", but as a novelty of howface-blindness might affect someone, I found it very interesting, andalso from the movie-making aspect.SPOILERS: Eventually with the help of hypnosis Anna was able topartially recreate a vision of the face, and it turned out to be apoliceman helping the main investigator. She also was eventually ableto return to teaching, in a small community on a nearby island wherethere were very few students.
