Stacy Hamilton and Mark Ratner are looking for a love interest, and are helped along by their older classmates, Linda Barrett and Mike Damone, respectively. The center of the film is held by Jeff Spicoli, a perpetually stoned surfer dude who faces off with the resolute Mr. Hand, who is convinced that everyone is on dope.

Many people remember this movie as being a wild, risque, and hilarious ride; well, it certainly is, but, as I noted when I saw this film yesterday, it is also a film that could no longer be made today. Our present social environment is too politically correct and repressive for it to get the green light from a major studio. Regardless of what one thinks of Sean Penn personally, he is a dynamic and gifted actor. Nowhere is this more obvious than in his role as Spicoli. He is marvelous and the name of the would be surfer still evokes laughter from just about everybody I know. Yet, the good times would be censored today as saying "He's a f-g" is not even remotely acceptable in the new century's Hollywood. A comment like Mike Damone's that someone was a wuss, meaning a cross between a whimp and a p-ssy would probably be deleted from the final product. One simply does not toss around a word like "p-ssy" in 2005. Jennifer Jason Leigh as Stacy is a feminine and amazing triumph and the swimsuit scenes are more than memorable; however, the plot concerning her is more complex than we originally realized. Twenty years later her travails would have to be radically altered. In 1982, she was clearly depicted as a casualty of the sexual revolution. By the final frames, despite her fellatio practice with Phoebe Cates and her one date hook-ups, she has decided that sex is not an end in itself. She pines for romance. Stacy learns a painful lesson that many girls would not be exposed to by the motion picture industry today. To do so would make them feel as if they were distributing reactionary conservative propaganda instead of entertaining. Other than AIDS, sex is usually depicted as being without cost, or, if there are costs, then they are not of any serious importance. Stacy's experiences clash defiantly with our conventional wisdom. She lusts not carnal lust but a meaningful connection with another human being. The kind of intertwining that robotically occurs between two bodies is superflous to her needs. In this way the film becomes an advertisement for restraint and self-control. Another way in which Fast Times... stands athwart our current path can be found in the "Kill Lincoln" buttons and displays the students wear before the big football game. Such items would never make it past a hall monitor in today's public schools. Slogans like those would be deemed a sign of pathology and possibly warrant suspension. Unfortunately for us, subject matter that is funny is now often condemned as being "hurtful" and "hateful." If you ask me, let's bring back the days of Mr. Hand and Ridgemont High!

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen! The film is about asurfer dude (Sean Penn) who gives a headache to his tough history (RayWalston) for convincing that everyone's on dope. Stacy Hamilton (JenniferJason Leigh) and Mark Ratner (Brian Backer) are looking for a love interestand are helped along by their older classmates Mike Damone (Robert Romanus)and Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates) respectively. The film is located inSouthern California, which is where I live in. If you have not seen "FastTimes At Ridgemont High", rent it at your local video store near you. You'lllike it! I like it!10/10 stars!

If you haven't seen this movie do yourself a favor and watch it. I can watch this movie over and over again without the jokes getting old. Forget Dead Man Walking, Sean Penn should have gotten an Oscar for Spicoli.

This review is from: Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Collector's Edition) (High School Reunion Collection) (DVD) "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" Is a strong contender for the best teen movie from the eighties. The case for the movie is easy to make: It is written by Cameron Crowe, who wrote Jerry Maguire, Say Anything, and Almost Famous. It is beautifully filmed and directed. (Director is Amy Heckerling, who apart from being awefully cute has made such wonderful movies as Clueless.) It is funny and real. And it has a magnificent cast of young actors who where unknowns then. The surfer/stoner is famously played by Sean Penn in one of his first roles, and he is awesome. Jennifer Jason Leigh is perfect as the young innocent fifteen-year-old. (Amazingly she was about 20 when she played it, but you'd never know it.)And Phoebe Cates... As Amy Heckerling says in a featurette: The boys just loves Phoebe... the rental cassettes always track a lot around the place where she takes off her top, they've been freeze-framed so much..." Which is as good a reason as any to get the DVD version, they slow-mo and freeze-frame a lot better... But seriously, Phoebe is a wonderful actress who has been woefully underused by Hollywood. And she is also just stunningly cute to boot. Even if this film had nothing else going for it, get it for her. (She is also excellent in the later film Princess Caraboo, and she is buck nude in the light "Paradise", which I hope they will put on DVD soon.)Eolake

Slice of life of Southern California kids dated with great early '80's tunes. Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and Mark Ratner (Brian Backer) are interested in the fair sex, but their more experienced friends Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates) and Mike Damone (Robert Romanus) give them hopelessly bad advice. Great performances all around, but the scene-stealers are surfer pothead Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn), who thinks nothing of having a pizza ordered in to his history class, Stacey's older brother Brad (Judge Reinhold), who has bum luck with women and jobs, and history teacher Mr. Hand (Ray Walston), who has all the patience of a boiling tea kettle. Unfortunatly, extra scenes that appear on Comedy Central among other stations are not included here, as director Heckerling is not particularly fond of them. Look for Nicholas Cage, Anthony Edwards, and Eric Stoltz as Spicoli's fellow stoners, and Forest Whittaker as Ridgemont's football hero. Bruce Springsteen's younger sister Pamela appears briefly as a cheerleader.

I just saw this movie for the first time straight through and really wasn't that impressed. It does capture the 80's spirit and High School life during this decade as expected. The movie really needed more Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli! He was very funny and believable as a stoner and managed to hold my interest in his brief appearances. Phoebe Cates is very cute, but her topless scene is a tad bit overhyped through the years because it lasts a total of 10 seconds tops. This is a definite fun rental, but I wouldn't add this one to my 200+ Dvd Collection.

This is a great caricature of the high school experience in the 80's. Ilove the dialogue, I love the visuals (Damones quivering legs, PHOEBECATES), the characters are hilarious, the soundtrack just takes youback...This is one of my favorites to watch over and over!

This review is from: Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Widescreen Special Edition) (DVD) Before American Pie, before Mean Girls, heck--even before Heathers (or any other teen high school romp movie (except maybe Porky's). This is the penultimate movie that after 25 years (!) is still as fresh as what's in Spicoli's bong! If you've never seen this movie...get on the bus (or get in the van).

This film is like a Superbad, Knocked Up, or Juno. A recommended see for many! This film is very entertaining and the sex should keep you very awake!

It looks like the biggest difference between this new dvd and the previous one is the audio. This one will have 5.1 sound while the older one just had 2.0 sound. It also looks like there might be a few more extras. So it will be worth getting again just for the sound alone.

This is a classic to say the least. Very funny, and somewhat emotional at times. If you want to see the only movie Sean Penn was in that's worth watching, then get this one. Nothing else he's ever done other than this movie is worth seeing. Judge Reinhold is excellent also. Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool is worth the price of the movie. Get it and love it without a doubt.

I saw this movie with my english teacher. I think that this movie is very boring but some characters of the movie make it funny. The rating that I give is medium because the story is so fast that sometimes it's hard to fallow the story. My favorite character is Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn) because his stupidity makes his very funny. I think that the society in our times is more violent. The school in Fast Times seens less dangerous than today's school. Its a funny and divertising film. I recommend it for persons who loves comedy movies.

Fun account of high school told through a wittyscript by Cameron Crowe and the direction onAmy Heckerling. Penn is classic as stonerJeff Spicoli, while other young faces make namesfor themselves. Walston steals the picture asthe irascible Mr. Hand. Made into a short livedsitcom in 1986 that starred Walston.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High doesn't have very much going for it excepta handful of really good actors when they were only somewhat goodactors. The movie centers around various high school stereotypes of theearly-1980s, the innocent girl, and the sexually experienced girl; thenerdy, but smart guys; the cool guys that help out the nerdy guys; and,of course, the stoner/burn out. The problem with all these charactersis that they fail to become anything more than stereotypes, although, the writer & director obviously tried very hard to make them so.The movie would have really worked a lot better as more of a drama withcomedic elements, but instead tries to be a teen comedy with a coupleof dramatic elements thrown in.It's sad really, that these characters all seem like they could have alot of depth if only the director and writer tried to explore them alittle bit more. For example, there is the whole "guy getting his bestfriends girlfriend pregnant" subplot that is resolved veryhalf-heartedly and without much thought. There are a few funny moments, however, such as when one of thecharacters is on a date and realizes that he has forgotten his walletat home, and he ends up biding his time until his friend is able todrop it off by continuously ordering Cokes. Unfortunately, these scenesend up getting lost in the fog of such a disorganized plot.Forget this movie, and go see The Breakfast Club instead.

This is an enjoyable movie. I decided to see it after hearing all the hypeabout how it was such a classic. I think this is a little overrated, but itsstill enjoyable. I like spickoli and I like the plot with Jennifer JasonLeigh and boy did I love Phoebe Cates! This is a nice movie with a decentplot, but I won't rush to see it again.

No doubt about it, this is the best high school film ever made, and it is a cult classic. It was based off the book by Cameron Crowe, and it starred Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, and Ray Waltson as Mr. Hand. This film also included first timers who are now very well known: Nickolaus Cage(credited as Nickolaus Coppola), Forrest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Anthony Edwards(co-star of Top Gun, star of tv's ER), and Amanda Wyass (The very first Freddy Kruger victim, and former co star of tv's Highlander The Series). This film is what started it all in the 1980's, adapted by the book by Cameron Crowe, who also wrote the screenplay, is based on a true story. Cameron Crowe was a man in his early 20's from Germany, who came to Ridgemont High in California, and disguised himself as a student. He recorded all the events that entire year, and he then wrote the book. You will love both the movie, the book, and Jeff Spicoli(Sean Penn)! END

This review is from: Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Full Screen Special Edition) (DVD) Fast Times has always been a classic comedy. Who could ever forget the name Jeff Spiccoli?? Good movie to see if you haven't already, but don't watch it with your younger children.

I see this movie in my english class.I think it's funny but sometimes it's very boring. My favourite character is Jeff Spicoli(Sean Penn). He is always late at school and is US history teacher Mr.Hand love to say bad things to him.He is funny, stupid and he go to school when he is stone. This movie is kind of old.Today,it's very different. They have lot of students who go to school with guns and knives. They steel clothes or money of the younger with their weapons. They have lot of dealer who sell drugs. In the time of the movie,he had some dealers and scalpers but it's less dangerous that today. In conclusion, this movie is funny but I never rent him at the video store to see him again. It's a movie for the person who like old comedy with sex.

Phoebe Cates. Red Bikini. Boing boing. Need I say more? Also Sean Penn playing himself.

Fast Times at Ridgement High is a bit over-rated probably because of all the nudity and sex but the cast makes up for the rauchiness. Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicolas Cage, and Forest Whitaker have great roles in this comedy and Amy Heckerling is a fun and modern director but this movie doesn't stay with me for some reason. Ray Walston is hilarious as the teacher, his banter with Sean Penn is my favorite part. This movie is good but not great, just watch it for Sean Penn's airhead loving performance.
