Gnomeo and Juliet is a computer-animated kids comedy produced by Baker Bloodworth and directed by Kelly Asbury, and featuring music from Elton John. It is based on the tragic play by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet. Featuring the voice talents of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Jason Statham, Maggie Smith, Ashley Jensen, Matt Lucas, Patrick Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Jim Cummings, Hulk Hogan and more. Plot: The movie takes place in the modern day gardens of the Capulet and Montague families. In their gardens they have tons of of cute little lawn gnomes running around, who hate each other, and are separated by their colors, red and blue. Our main characters are Gnomeo(James McAvoy) a blue gnome, and Juliet(Emily Blunt) a red gnome. After the blues and reds have a lawnmower race with Gnomeo and Tybalt(Jason Statham) as the racers. Tybalt ends up cheating and causes Gnomeos lawnmower to get destroyed. Gnomeo plots revenge and decides to sneak into the reds garden at nightfall. at the same time Juliet is plotting to go on top of a greenhouse out in the distance that holds a beautiful flower at the very top. Gnomeos plan goes awry and he takes off towards the greenhouse to try to escape the reds he sees somone running towards the flower and he chases after the and grabs the flower right as Juliet reaches for it. The two fight over the flower and end up falling for each other in the process, when they discover that they are actually supposed to be enemies they are shocked. The two lovebirds decide to meet at a secret garden at certain times to profess their love to one another. While at this garden they meet an eccentric pink flamingo named featherstone, who had his lovebird taken away from him and was locked in a shed for 20 years. The flamingo teaches them they can't let anyone stand in the way of their love and they have to fight for their right to be together. But it's up to Gnomeo and Juliet to pull it off.My Thoughts: As soon as I heard of this movie, I thought of my girlfriend who loves gnomes and I thought this would be perfect for us to go see, and when I heard it featured the music of Elton John I knew it would be a good one, let us not forget he was involved in the Lion King. This movie didn't disappoint, The gnomy characters are very well animated nad the movie is full of vibrant colors. The interactions between the gnomes is very well done also. The only complaints I have is that I was expecting maybe kind of a musical thing, since the movie featured music by Elton John, and had so many famous actors in the movie, why couldn't Elton John play a role, and make up some songs to go along with it. That would have made it even better, but even though Elton didn't play a character like I was hoping, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it is mainly for kids but many adults will enjoy it too. I think it is worth a buy and not just a rent.

As parents to a six-year-old girl, my husband and I are constantly on the look-out for tolerable kid-friendly shows that we can take her to (at the movies). I say tolerable because quality is often lacking in many of these films and then there's the issue of PG vs. G ratings. Well, when we heard Gnomeo and Juliet was being screened at our local cinema, we decided to give it a try, and to our surprise, our picky 6-year-old loved it!I have to say that this movie is mainly for young children. It is full of color, which will appeal to most kids, and there are adorable garden gnomes running around. My husband fell asleep within fifteen minutes (to be fair, he had had a long day at work), but my daughter's attention was riveted to the screen from the beginning till the end. Me? I enjoyed the music (thanks to Elton John who obligingly helped with the soundtrack featuring his classic hits - his partner David Furnish was a producer on this film). I also sort of enjoyed the silly premise - instead of the doomed star-crossed Romeo and Juliet, we have warring garden gnomes, the Reds and the Blues, and two impish and totally cute gnomes, Juliet (a Red, voiced by Emily Blunt) and Gnomeo (a Blue, voiced by James McAvoy) who flirt and later fall for each other despite their differences. The casting is a sort of coup really given the famous names featured here - there's Jim Cummings, Patrick Stewart, Dolly Parton, Ozzy Osbourne, and many more! The movie is a kaleidoscope of color and at times this can get a tad overwhelming but the children appeared to love it, so my verdict - awesome entertainment for the kiddie set!

I've been wanting to watch this film ever since it came out intheaters, but never gotten a chance to. Now after I saw it on demand, Iwas thinking "Well... er... you know... this is not a kids movie".There are parts where it looked like Gnomeo was committing suicide butthen you actually found out it was just broken glass or something. The storyline looked like a 4-year-old written it and it's nothingspecial. It's a little run-down with a bit of 'lazy' animation and thehumour, well, it could make adults laugh a couple of times, but I thinkthat humour was placed in for more of the little kids and don't reallysell out anything for the older kids.I haven't saw Romeo and Juliet before, let alone a ballet, but thisfilm was well, sorta childish and really nothing special for the olderkids and even adults.

OK so it wasn't what Shakespeare wrote, but very cute with referencesand jokes adults would understand more than children, but still fun andappropriate for all ages. I saw this movie with two other adults (nokiddos) and we all loved it. I highly recommend for anyone who wants agood laugh and great dialogue. The older I get, the more I appreciategood, clean movies with at least some morals expressed. In today'sworld of movies with nasty language, gratuitous sex and over-the-topviolence, this was a breath of fresh air. I will probably go to see itagain, just to see what I missed the first time. In my experience, youalways miss something while laughing at something else. And we did alot of laughing!

What a horrible movie! I turned it off half way through when I decided we'd had enough of Juliette lying to her father, sneaking out of the yard to rendezvous with a boy, etc. Not appropriate for young kids. Language is a little too rough also. I don't like to hear "idiots", etc from a kids movie. Don't be fooled by the charming graphics and cute concept.

My 2.5 yr old twins request this movie first above all other movies and TV options. They love the music, the physical humor, the characters and the storyline. This movie ENTHRALLS them, even after watching it at least 30 times. It was available for streaming online until today through (another company) and of course now I am on Amazon to buy the DVD. My 7 yr old son also likes the movie a lot. If you are looking for a fun movie for young kids give this one a try!

This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) All the jokes from the commerical were in the last 10 minutes of the movie. They've definately produced better, although the songs were catchy.

This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) Fairytale artwork and a charming Elton John soundtrack, a clever animated spin on the classic Romeo and Juliet story. Bought it for my young-at-heart adult daughter and her hubby for Christmas. Delightful and re-watchable.

This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) I had not seen any previews for this dvd when we rented it. I was completely blown away! Immediately knew I wanted to purchase this sweet little show. The characters are adorable, the message admirable, and the music is addictive! A great, feel good, family film.

I took my Granddaughter of 3 1/2 to Gnomeo and Juliet. It was her first movie. There was a bit of apprehension initially being the theater gets dark, but since the moviev was rated G, I gave it a try. She loved it and sat through the entire movie. Every Gnome is safe at the end of the movie after their fighting which is important for a toddler. Also I bought the cd for the movie and she loves Elton John's songs especially "Hello Hello." Am definitely buying the DVD when it comes out as she wants to see the movie again.

I really wanted to like this movie. I was so excited when it finally made it to the Video On Demand and I could rent it. I popped my bowl of popcorn. Got my favorite beverage ready. I even opened a bottle of wine about half way through... but the bottle of wine was to help me endure the remaining half of the movie. It was hokey. The graphics were great but I felt that all the jokes were forced and the story line made me wish . I was so dissapointed. I was excited when I found out that it was from one of the creators of Shrek... I had such high expectations. But it was just not my cup of tea... and it severly ruined my glass of wine.I realize that we each have our own preferences. I am not saying this is a absolute NO for everyone. It was just not for me... and I really like movies like this. The movie did not deliever what I was expecting.~TMM007.

I wasn't expecting Gnomeo and Juliet to be amazing, and it wasn't.However, it was pretty decent, and quite an improvement over thetrailer which gave me low expectations for this film. Gnomeo and Julietwas better than I thought, it is not among the best animated films ofall time and it never tried to be, but it isn't among the worst. The story loosely based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet ispredictable with not that many surprises, but at least it didn't have ajarring change of tone and at least it went somewhere. The film is alsotoo short in my view, and some of it was rather rushed. However, Gnomeo and Juliet is beautifully animated, with wonderfulcolours and backgrounds. The character designs weren't as good, butthey were tolerable. The film also has an energetic soundtrack, a funnyand witty script that children especially will love and likablecharacters. Adults will love or at least admire the voice cast, as allof them from Maggie Smith, Ashley Jenssen and Michael Caine to PatrickStewart, Julie Walters and Jim Cummings are terrific.Overall, a decent movie that didn't try to be anything more than it wasother than a fun and entertaining film. 7/10 Bethany Cox

*** out of (****)Talking gnomes. A parody of Romeo and Juilet. It's 3D. It's a kid's wetdream and a parent's worst nightmare. With all the money, actors, andoriginal ideas out there, why make a movie personifying toys, and havea surcharge for a darker motion picture? Say what you will about thismovie, but I liked it. For once, the jokes were funny, the film knewhow to had fun, and overall, I just had a really great time. Although,I must confess, I was excited for this movie before seeing it. I knewgoing in what I was going to get, and I got exactly that. Let me tellyou something, the idea sounds horrible on paper, but seeing as how thedirectors took note of that, they treated this movie with a nicedirection. With a title as sublime as "Gnomeo & Juliet", I guess no onecan really be disappointed. But, in the hands of a worse or evenamateur director, this could've been a disaster.First of all, the performances were nice. Both leading protagonists arecharming, charismatic, and fulfill their roles. I found the charactersvery cute, and a lot of fun. Also, I thought the jokes weren't too bad. There's a lot to like from adults and kids alike. This film speaks tomultiple demographics. Furthermore, the 3D, while darker, added adecent field of depth. It wasn't the best use of the modern technology, but not the worst. To put the cherry on top, this movie is just a lotof fun. The jokes are. The actors are. The scenery is. The whole movieis just one enjoyable ride.Any complaints? For one, I didn't like the ending. What could have beena ballsy, Pixar- esque type ending turns into another kid's filmresolution. Also, this movie isn't something you have to rush out tosee. I'd say a matinée is most recommended. And, you don't HAVE to seethis movie in 3D. 2D or 3D, it really won't make a difference. All in all, Gnomeo & Juilet wasn't the worst movie I saw. In fact, it'sfar from it. It was a decent movie that was very entertaining. Iactually might revisit it now and then.

The premise of Gnomeo & Juliet is as simple as it is charming - a re-telling of the classic Romeo & Juliet tale in an all-ages story starring a cast of, yes, garden gnomes. Well, not entirely garden gnomes - there's a bullfrog, some pink plastic lawn flamingos, a deer, a turbo-powered ride-on lawnmower, and a few other such characters, but the gnomes are the mainstay. The blue-hatted gnomes of one backyard and their red-hatted counterparts in the yard next door have been feuding for ages, so it's inevitable thast when the adventure-seeking title characters encounter each other and fall for one another, trouble is sure to follow. I've maintained for a long time that an awfully lot of the best comedies out there can be found in the family section of the DVD store, and this one is in that batch. It provides way more laughs than a lot of the big titles in the comedy section, and on top of that packs in ample cute appeal and a special magic that simply charms the heart. There's just something about those rotund little gnomes scurrying about in their prized blue-or-red hats that's irresistable. The voice acting is very well done. With the main characters, Gnomeo & Juliet bucks the growing trend in western animation to bring in big-name stars who import their trademark personas into their animated roles, and instead lets the talented voice cast, for the most part, fit into their characters instead of the other way around. A few exceptions to this exist in the cameo appearances of unlikely stars for supporting characters, but that's done so well you don't mind at all. Great job on the animation itself too, with lots of care put into the facial expressions and often comedic body language of the little gnomes and their cohorts. Overall, Gnomeo & Juliet successfully blends the wit of modern animated fare like Shrek (Two-Disc Special Edition) with the innocence and sweetness of Disney classics like Dumbo (Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack in DVD Packaging) and Bambi (Two-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging). Whether you thrive on animated movies or see them only rarely, you've got to check this one out.

"Romeo and Juliet", is considered as one of the greatest love storiesever made. But for me, I'm not into William Shakespeare's work norRomeo and Juliet. But a couple months ago, Touchstone studios released an animatedretelling of the classic story except with...Gnomes.The movie was really good and it was really funny. It also has somecute characters and some good voice acting from James McAvoy, EmilyBlunt, and Jim Cummings. The music was also good because it was done byElton John. The problems I have with this film is that the film feels a bit rushedat time's and the movie can be pretty boring."Gnomeo and Juliet", is a great animated film for the whole family toenjoy.

I took my twins (age 5) to see this today and they were THRILLED tobits!! I disagree with the reviewer that says it's a "girls'" movie! MyHot Wheels/Bionicle loving sons, loved it and they didn't think it wasgirly one bit and neither did I!I also did not think it was a Toy Story rip off as there have been aton of movies featuring toys that come alive long before Toy Storyanyway. Yes, garden gnomes and decorations come to life but that's werethe similarity between the two ends.I did not go in expecting to see a cartoon version of Romeo and Julietso I was not disappointed one bit and thankfully, this story does notshare the tragic end of the original tale. I did like the charactersquite a bit, I LOVED how the gnomes were fragile, I loved the clayclinging sounds they made, how realistic the textures were.. it did notfeel like a "dime a dozen" animation at all!! It was bright, it had asolid plot, and it was going somewhere (unlike let's say, Alpha andOmega or Happy Feet). My boys were begging as soon as the titles rolled to watch it again sowe just might be returning to the movie theater with some friends thisweekend. I wouldn't mind seeing it myself and I was glad we did go seeit because after I read the previous review, I had my doubts if it wasgoing to be any good but it was!!! My boys "got it" much better thansay, Shrek... so it will appeal to a younger crowd as well in myopinion...

Oh my we watched this film on the strength of the Trailer.. This movieis simply a mechanism to shift Elton Johns wares and self promotion, with song after song by his good self. When you are doing a movie likethis you really have to be different and using gnomes just simply justdoesn't cut it all they have done is a bit of word play with the title. An better example of this is the Romeo must die. What is the only positive for this film is that the 3D is not too bad.The plot devices fail to hit the spot or did i miss them. One could saythis is a kids movie well so is Toy Story and Monsters Inc.. Finally amovie is good if i manage to stay awake.ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
