Like many who rated this movie I, too, was looking forward to a comedy not based on the ever popular coming out melancholy or the self hating pray the gay away routine. Instead, we got a whole lot of bad acting and even worse chemistry. Ick. How do I get my money back from the cable company?

I have mixed feelings about this movie. I loved Jim Carrey. I didn't care for a lot of the stereotypical brash "gay" bits (especially in the beginning). But that's basically what the movie was about- a gay guy, so I should have expected it. I thought it was funny and all around good movie to watch.

Based on the real life events of con artist, impostor, and multipleprison escapee Steven Jay Russell, 'I Love You Phillip Morris' is awonderful true story, that teaches you that LOVE is a infectious thing.Glenn Ficarra & John Requa, have handled this true-tragic-story withbeauty. Jim Carrey as Steven Jay Russell is exemplary. He pays tributeto a man, for who, LOVE was the center of attraction. Ewan McGregor asPhillip Morris is outstanding as well. He plays aemotionally-challenged, openly gay and mentally disturbed man withremarkable understanding. On the whole, 'I Love You Phillip Morris' is a heartwarming, depressing& memorable true story into a film. A Proud, Two Thumbs Up!

All the gay haters are out in full force in their reviews of this film.It is NOT a commentary on ALL gay people! If a film features a Frenchcon artist, do we automatically assume that the film is suggesting thatALL French people are con artists? No. So why, in a film with a conartist who happens to be gay, do viewers assume this implies that allgay people are con artists? If this particular character says that "being gay is expensive" he'sonly expressing his own point of view. He's not suddenly the officialrepresentative of all gay people. If a female character who loves toshop and buy expensive clothes says "being a woman is so expensive", isshe speaking for all women? We know she isn't! Being gay might beexpensive for Steven Russell because of his lifestyle choices (and I'mnot talking about being gay, which ISN'T a lifestyle choice!). Hechooses to spend a lot of money on high-end crap. Nobody in the film issuggesting he represents all gay people.Nor is Phillip Morris's character meant to represent another"stereotype". Some people are gentle and naive. Some gay men are gentleand naive. So what? People come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, races, genders, personality qualities, etc. Phillip Morris happens tobe a sweet, gentle, trusting man. Does this mean the filmmakers aresuggesting that all gay men are this way? No.These characters represent Steven Russell and Phillip Morris. As soonas there is a gay element in a film people start screaming "offensive","stereotype", "disgusting", etc. Okay, so they're narrow-minded,intolerant and have limited world views. Fine. Read up on a film alittle before going to see it if you find sexual orientation other thanyour own "offensive".This isn't a "gay" film. It's a story about a con man (who happens tobe gay) and his experiences. The story would still be interesting if heweren't gay, but for some reason that's all some people can focus on.Sorry you feel threatened and disgusted by gay characters. Grow up.This is 2011. I would think by now that who people love or what theyget up to in bed with their adult consenting partner would be anon-issue.The film was entertaining with a good performance by Carrey and a trulyendearing one from Ewan McGregor. I enjoyed it.

This is not a film I would go to see by choice but fortunately See filmfirst came up roses again with free tickets to a preview screening. Youcan tell that I had low expectations of I love you Phillip Morris, andthis was mainly due to the fact that Jim Carrey's rubber face and daftnoises have never been enough to get me excited about a film. Some ofhis previous roles in captivating dramas such as The Truman Show andEternal Sunshine have been a key to the overall success of the moviebut his appearances in low brow comedies tend to leave me disappointed. Thankfully, I Love You Phillip Morris falls in the middle of Carrey'sprevious performances, a healthy dose of comedy which is aided by anengaging storyline as the captivating conman struggles to escape thelaw and eventually meets the love of his life in prison. Therelationship between Ewan Mcregor and Jim Carrey is completelyconvincing, despite the absurdities of the situation, which is actuallybased on a true story. It is hard to describe the film without drawing on comparisons toanother well known film in which Leonardo Dicaprio runs from the law;this is essentially Catch me if you can with a gay man. Although thefilm fails to live up to the success of its predecessor, it is anentertaining ride and a welcome escape from the teen comedies whichtend to dominate the box office. I have no doubt that audiences will flock to this film expectinganother zany Carrey comedy but the humour does tend to take a back seatin some of the more poignant moments in the film. Fortunately the lifestory of Phillip Morris is a compelling one, although the dramatic turnnear the end of the movie is not as effective as it could have been. If you're a fan of Jim Carrey, you are sure to enjoy this, I waspleasantly surprised by the film but this could be due to the lowexpectations I had. Definitely worth a look if you get a chance but Idoubt I would go out of my way to watch it again.7/10If you liked this film you will also enjoy these:Catch me If You Can, Milk, Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert and Man OnThe Moon

I simply couldn't wait any longer for this film to open in America, so I bought the DVD from AmazonUK (yes, I have a region free DVD player). OMG this is one of the best films I've seen this year. Jim Carrey gives a performance worthy of year end award consideration in this funny, absurd and poignant romantic comedy about a gay con-artist. This is the Carrey of The Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine, and he shines in an often challenging role. Ewan MacGregor is equally affecting in the role of Carrey's love interest. There are some broad and outrageous moments; this is a comedy after all. However, there are an equal number of lovely, tender moments of romance and passion. This film has been in some legal battles and so the American distribution has been held up. I hope these problems get resolved and this finds its way to a theatre near you. Don't miss it.

This review is from: I Love You Phillip Morris (DVD) Here's the thing, if you're even 1% homophobic, or even 1% of 1% homophobic, then don't bother with this movie. Seriously. And don't bother watching it with anyone who is even 1% of 1% homophobic either, because it'll really just ruin all the beauty of it. It's a shame, but it's true. I know my father and my best friend would love this movie, but I won't bother recommending it to them. They wouldn't be able to get past all the gay sex. And that's that.Have you ever been in love? Steven Russell has. With inmate Phillip Morris. This movie was just beautiful all over, from the cinematography, to the acting, to the writing. It was just phenomenal. A true love story, but not corny in any way (which isn't easy). And to make a love story seem real and beautiful between two men without making either of them seem efeminate or emasculated is a true mark of a good storyteller. I just loved it. I loved their love. I felt their love and it was real. Google the real Steven Russell. Read his interviews in articles at NPR. The whole story is real, from start to finish. It all happened. It really did.

This review is from: I Love You Phillip Morris (DVD) JIM CARREY ventures into new territory in this tragicomedy as a gay con man who uses his lawyer-sized brain to seize the moment and immerse himself in his homosexual side (he's married in a hetero relationship), to look for love while he's serving time in prison. He locks glances with EWAN McGREGOR and comes on pretty strong to the soft-spoken, naive Southern boy who's afraid to go into the prison yard because of his blond good looks. The story leaps forward with a lot of twists and turns as Carrey uses all of his escape artist techniques to con everyone he comes into contact with. But things get rough for the intimate relationship with McGregor when the naive and simple blond man rebels against the lavish life style Carrey buys for him with his fraudulent schemes. The acting is splendid from Carrey and McGregor, but the film doesn't get really touching until the last forty minutes when the amazing con artist takes drastic measures to keep McGregor at his side.Clearly, not a film for a wide public but it's a story that is not only involving, especially toward the end, but is based on an amazing true "catch me if you can" kind of story that has been given some artistic license for minor changes.McGregor gives a heartfelt performance as the embittered and broken lover who still cannot let go of someone who let him down with lies. His last few scenes are especially moving.Played for both tragedy and comedy, it's a mixture that doesn't always work but it's certainly not a complete misfire and deserves wider acceptance from open-minded viewers without hearts of stone.

Greetings again from the darkness. The real story of Steven Russell isdownright fascinating. He is the ultimate con man and has beennicknamed "King Con". A master of reading people, gaining trust andmanipulating many systems, Russell was proved to have stolen from amajor food service corporation and a major healthcare organization.Stolen, as in hundreds of thousands of dollars. The smaller cons aretoo numerous to count. And don't forget his string of jail/prisonescapes! Glenn Ficarra and John Regua (the writing team behind Bad Santa)co-direct this story based on Steve McVicer's book on Russell. Somehowthey have delivered a hokey, boring film despite the man at the centerof the story. Luckily for them, Jim Carrey drums up a terrificperformance as Russell and provides relief from the amateurish scriptand direction. The role of Phillip Morris is tackled by Ewan McGregor in a manner wehave not previously seen from him. His effeminate naivety offers a nicecontrast to the domineering Russell/Carrey. The support work is minimalbut provided by the very capable Rodrigo Santoro and the very talented, but totally wasted here, Leslie Mann. The film gives us the beginning of the fall for Russell. His parentstell him he was adopted and he responds by tracking down his birthmother. He pretty much falls apart after that meeting and commenceswith his endless stream of cons. Is he a happily married man or is hegay? Is he a brilliant strategist or an embezzler? His life changesduring one of his trips to jail. He meets Phillip Morris. Their lifetogether is full of excess, thanks to Russell's latest scam. As always, the con is exposed and Russell spends his entire life alternatingbetween being on the lam or in jail.I found the film inferior to "Catch Me if You Can", a better (notgreat) film about another real life con man, Frank Abignale. The catand mouse chases of that film held my interest. This film has littledrama despite the obvious talents of this off-center man. My guess isthat in the hands of better filmmakers, this could have been a muchimproved film.Apparently, Russell's biggest con was played on himself. He neverreally figured out who he is. He is now serving a life sentence innear-solitary confinement in prison. Mr. McVicker, the book's author, has stated two very telling observations. First, he suspects PhillipMorris was not quite as innocent as he would have us believe. Second, his description of Russell as a man "who makes you want to believe"tells you all you need know about this ultimate con man.

This is not a comedy. I didn't smile or laugh at all. Jim Carey isabsolutely losing any acting respect he used to have. Direction waslike someone on ADHD, randomly and shockingly flipping scene toworthless scene, left for the viewer to catch up, and the endlessnarration, which is trying to catch us up, just leaves me wondering howbad Jim Carey's roles will get before they get better. I found the gaycharacterizations offensive (and so did my gay friends), the jokes ...especially those about prison life, you can either pay a hefty pricefor the items you want or you suck a guys d!ck (repeated about 24 timesin a row).... really loses anyone attention. yeah we got that point, weknow it happens. yeah the movie sucks. that happens too. overacted, overrated, over... yawwwn. wait, did i pay money for this movie? oops, bad call. We turned it off somewhere in the middle and decided it was more fun todo dishes. yes, dishes and wine are better than this movie. If you wantto laugh and have even a quirky wicked sense of humor, do not botherever seeing this worthless waste of time.

My expectations for this movie wasn't high. To be honest I had noexpectations at all. But the cinema was fully booked and I were gladwhen I found the last two tickets to the premiere. On arrival I noticed that there were about 12 people seated. Somethingthat gave me a odd feeling. Jim Carrey has always been a personalfavourite of mine, and I try to watch his more "non-physical" (You knowwhat I'm talking about) movies as fast as I can. And this one was noexception.I love you Philip Morris is about a con-man named Steven Russell, whoafter a car-crash decides to live a new kind of life, a life as gay. Heends up in prison and meets another homosexual man, called PhilipMorris. Together they start a new life as partners.Throughout the film I had troubles determine where it was going. Wasthis supposed to be a serious drama or a hilarious comedy? In thebeginning we are told jokes with sexual innuendos and we watch JimCarrey hurt himself in different ways. But after a while it's a totallydifferent impression that the viewer receives. I feel that this moviehas troubles in defining what it wants to say and be. Regarding the gay theme, you can expect some pretty shocking scenes. But I think that the movie still give the Homosexual man a fair chance. It's not those stereotypical gay characters you use to see in othermovies. Of course there are some pretty predictable gestures and voicesuttered by Jim and Evan. But it's still a human portrait of two personsand their love that "crosses all boarders".This is a pretty good movie but I have to admit that I was a bitdisappointed when the credits rolled. Some of the jokes are funny, someof them are not. Don't expect either a new Eternal Sunshine of thespotless mind or a hysterical Ace Ventura. It's good, but it's notgreat. Therefore I give "I love you Philip Morris" 6 out of 10

I have said it before and I'll say it again. Movies that are based on"true events" and/or people, normally don't really work for me. This isone of those wonderful exceptions. If you can see past the sexuality(and it's not really explicit here, though it far removed from the verysubtle approach of Brokeback Mountain too) and do not have anyprejudice against the movie from the get-go, you might find yourself beentertained quite a bit! While a few have criticized Ewans role as too passive, I do think thathe has to play it exactly like that, to ground Jim C. performance. Youcan't have two people being completely energetic. So Ewan takes the"thankless" part of being the "silent" one (not literally). The jokes are provocative and will offend quite a few people. But themovie, though it seems without any real goal, knows what it wants toachieve. And it will be on the "hate" list of many people. But that'sOK. And even if you don't like it, that does not mean, you arediscriminating anybody or against anything. You might be, but maybe youjust don't like the movie/humor.Overall I enjoyed, the weird and unpredictable story. :o)
TheLittleSongbird (30 April 2012)
Not love it mind it, but as a movie with its subject matter I found itvery credible. The script does get overly-vulgar sometimes, the editingcould have slowed down a bit as some transitions from one scene toanother felt choppy and rushed and some of the tone shifts particularlytowards the end take a while to settle. However, whether with orwithout McGregor the film is compelling enough, with some genuinelyfunny scenes such as Steven breaks into jail after just being released.Ewan McGregor is nicely understated and quiet as the heart of the film, and while Jim Carrey does do his in-your-face style of acting he doesshow some subtlety and poignancy too. The two lead characters arewritten creditably and their relationship is surprisingly tender in howit's shown. The film aside from choppy transitions does look good aswell. All in all, I liked it though I can understand where people arecoming from when they say they don't. 7/10 Bethany Cox

When straight guys play gay guys, this can go either pretty well orpretty badly, this film being a prime example of the latter. If it goeswell, you'll usually have actors who play their gay characters as inany other (not necessarily tragic) romantic involvement, which is whatGyllenhaal and Ledger did in 'Brokeback', and what Colin Firth did in'A Single Man'. If it goes badly, the actors and/or the script relyheavily on common gay stereotypes, which is what Patrick Swayze did in'To Wong Fu', and what Jim Carrey does here. That's all the more regrettable as the true Steven Russell story isindeed brilliant screen material, among other things dwelling on thereasons why family fathers, at a turning point of their lives, mayquestion their sexual identity. What do the script and the abominableshowman Carrey make out of this? He exclaims 'I wanna be a faggot!outlined on a stretcher after a car accident. His character quickly evolves into one of the most offensive Hollywoodportrayals of gay men I've ever seen: while the extravagant, shallowcon-man lifestyle Russell aka Carrey pursues in the film may beaccurate for the story, I could have done very well without clichéremarks such as 'I discovered that being gay is terribly expensive'.This plays well into a certain public stance towards gays: we tolerateyou as long as you behave according to our stereotypes, which filmslike this embrace. Typical for this are the ridiculously overplayed sexscenes, which seem to have caused a stir, even though there's astraight sex scene just as ridiculous to match, which should have shownthat credibility isn't quite the issue here.To be fair, it's not all Carrey's fault: the script jumps from oneperspective to the other and simply can't decide what this is supposedto turn into. A gay romance? A con-man story? A comedy? A dramedy? Abiopic? McEwan seems just as confused about this as his haplesscharacter; even though he is about the only good thing this drivel hasto offer, his acting angle appears to be just as clueless as the viewerin regard to the plot.Or maybe I'm just being a drama queen, and Carrey's shenanigans arejust the harmless silly fun they've always been. Yet it's hard to beobjective about a film that mocks a significant part of your life.

It's difficult not to like a movie that casts two of my favorite actors, Jim Carrey and above all Ewan McGregor (I still remember that movie Trainspotting, I saw it on theatre). The movie it's all we, fan of gay-themed movie, always have hoped for: enough money to cast good actors, to have a good setting, to have good sound, good plot... everything is good. The only bad thing? It has a bittersweet happy ending. And no, this is not a spoiler, it's only reality. It's enough for you to go and read Steven Russell's entry in wikipedia to know what happened ([...])... this is probably one of the few cases in which I hope justice was not equal for everyone, and that crimes get unpunished!
(28 April 2012)
The writers took what could have been a great true story of a charismatic conman who evolved from a small town businessman to a white collar criminal, who has little regard for the law. The conman is crafty and talented and escapes a Texas prison on four separate occasions to be with his true love. Poor judgment in the casting of Jim Carey who turned the film into a piece of crap. Great story, it deserved better, too bad.

"Jim Carrey gives one of the best performances of his career. This brilliant and hilarious comedy could have been very successful at the box office if it was given more than just a limited release. I definitely recommend this movie. It's really entertaining and funny."

First of all, I'd like to say Jim Carrey and McGregor were very good atplaying gay dudes. They don't really look gay in real life, but thismovie almost made us believe they are."I Love You Phillip Morris" is another of those movies where someone iscrooked and try to stop being, but unfortunately fails. Steven doeseverything he can for his happiness and his partner's, but beingdishonest. Carrey playing a "lawyer" again reminds me of "Liar Liar",but here we have a quite different situation if you know what I mean. I don't know why on earth this movie is classified as comedy. I'venever missed a laugh so much as I did in this movie. The only funnypart for me was when the couple was dancing in the prison and listeningto a romantic song, while the other convicts were fighting andscreaming at each other and Steven and Phillip didn't even hear it. Butit was a weak laugh anyways. The film ran slowly and we didn't have anything to expect for it, so Igot bothered and almost slept while watching. I don't recommend.
collipal-1 (25 April 2012)
On the beginning of I Love You Phillip Morris, we are assured that itis based on true events. And it is true; a quick visit to Wikipediarevealed that even the most unlikely events really happened. That wouldhave made a fascinating movie out of I Love You Phillip Morris, but itunfortunately was not like that, because co-directors Glenn Ficarra andJohn Requa (who were also the co-screenwriters) did not find theappropriate tone to tell the story. The screenplay from I Love You Phillip Morris is well written, but theproblem comes from the direction, because Ficarra and Requa do not knowwhether they want to make us laugh, cry or simply share our incredulityto the situations portrayed in here. While I was watching it, I wasreminded of Catch Me If You Can, another film which was based on acon-man's impossible situations. But that film had a more simple andnatural style which made the humor to organically flow from thecharacters and the situations at the difference of I Love You PhillipMorris, where we find a "funny" atmosphere which feels forced anddifficult to classify.Maybe, Ficarra and Requa thought that the generalspectators were not going to be ready to accept an homosexual thrillerstarred by two Hollywood stars, and they decided to protect themselvesby adding a badly planned comedy varnish which ended up becoming intothe movie's biggest fail.On the other side of the coin, we have the film's best attribute, whichis the excellent performance from Jim Carrey, who instinctively adaptshimself to the strange requirements from the movie in order to rescuehis character's humanity, making us believe his sincere feelings andgood intentions despite his unpredictable behaviour.Unfortunately, EwanMcGregor does not bring a very good performance as the other maincharacter; I was left with the impression that this talented actorstudied the body language and attitudes from some homosexual people, and the result is that his character feels like an imitation of a gayperson instead of a real human being. In other words, as much asMcGregor softens his look and voice, I never felt him credible on hisrole. In summary, I Love You Phillip Morris is a mediocre movie when it couldhave been brilliant. However, I cannot deny it kept me moderatelyentertained because of the adequate screenplay and Carrey'sperformance, so I think it deserves a slight recommendation despite itsvarious fails.

They took a few liberties with the actual story of Steven Russell but hey its a comedy not a documentary and a hilarious comedy at that. Actually its a very good love story, grand con flick and prison break movie with just enough of Jim Carey the funny man to make every scene memorable. However, if you are the least bit homophobic don't even attempt to see this because you will be highly offended.
