I agree with the majority of reviewers here. This movie did surprise me, as I suspected it would be another cookie-cutter JCvD film. However, it manages to add some character development and actually attempt some creative storyline.Of course, I don't mean creative storyline like "Chinatown" or "Lord of the Rings" - I mean like the better episodes of "Walker Texas Ranger." The plot is a mix-match of two other prison movies: "Midnight Express" and "Triumph of the Spirit." The film even borrows the annoying transvestite from "Triumph." Yet despite the obvious plot-theft I could still watch the movie with some amusement. An hour in it stops being an excuse to have JCvD kick people in the heiney and actually starts developing the storyline and its characters, and there were a few moments that I thought were clever. And it has Jean say something I thought I would never hear him say in a movie..."I won't fight any more!"The minute Jean Claude van Damme says that in a movie, you know you're in for something different.Like I said, it's not exactly the most original prison film out there, but it's worth a one-time viewing.

The Story: When the man who killed his wife is acquitted thanks to acorrupt judge, a steel-works manager kills him in front of thecourthouse. Sentenced to life without parole, the man is sent to aRussian prison. As he adjusts to life in jail, the prison authoritiesuse him as a contestant in the "sparka", an illegal prize fight. You've got to wonder what drew Jean-Claude Van Damme to do thisunconventional & altogether depressing prison film. "In Hell" startsoff as a pretty routine revenge film, although the hero (Van Damme asusual) gets his revenge very quickly & thanks to a corrupt judge whowas bribed by the villain, is sent to jail. For life. Without anychance of parole. Not a good sign. Once in jail, things take a turn forthe worse. A young prisoner is brutally raped (what's with prison films& rape scenes?) & Van Damme goes to his rescue, but gets thrown intothe cooler by the guards. This must be the first prison film where thehero attempts suicide. Lucky for us, Van Damme gets talked out of it bythe ghost of his wife, in the form of a CGI insect. The fight scenesare quite harsh and the acting is (mostly) convincing. The charactersare a collection of stereotypes: the wheelchair-bound guy who can getanything for a price, the young prisoner who is incredibly unlucky &the nutcase who proves to be a good man.

Kyle LeBlanc is working a construction job in Russia and his wife isstruggling with the new surroundings and the lack of time they havetogether. On the phone to her one night, Kyle hears the house beingbroken into but arrives too late to save her from being killed. Hepursues the man and, although he gets away, his description is key inbringing the man in on charges. Justice only really takes one form forKyle though and he murders the man in front of the courtroom. Hissentence? Life without the possibility of parole. However with corruptguards, poor conditions and a violent cultural within the Russian jail, life may not actually be that long.I'm not sure who the people are who still turn up at cinemas and videorental stores for Jean-Claude Van Damme movies but, although I'm notone of them, I'll still give him the benefit of the doubt when he turnsup for free on the television. Some reviewers on this site sold it as areally good movie that is dark and tough and all the better forstripping away the style of some of his films. However they suggestthat the film does something interesting with this "losing yourself inviolence" thing but they are mistaken because it doesn't  in fact itis obvious affair that does just what you expect it to and lacksanything of depth or interesting in the telling. The dead wife aspectand the heavy moral message might have worked with skill in the tellingbut this is not the place to come for subtlety in the telling. The action may be different from the exaggerated style of some of hisfilms but this is not necessarily a good thing. Sure it is gritty andmore realistic in some ways, which would be good if the film hadsomething else going for it in the plot and characters. I'm not tryingto be overly critical because I can see how it could have beeninteresting but the will or ability to make it happen seems to beabsent from cast and crew. Van Damme plays it simple enough but this isno bad thing since this is what the film calls for. Taylor wasinteresting but far too one-note to carry his back-story or make thenarration have the weight it needed. Support from the rest of the castis typically uninspired even if there are a few familiar faces inthere.Overall a so-so film at best. It has a nice atmosphere but the story isnot as clever or interesting as it would like to think it is. Insteadit is all a bit obvious, contradictory and a bit too full of its ownimportance. The cast can't add the depth although in fairness theyprobably wouldn't have been good enough if they had been given thematerial. Might appeal to Van Damme fans anyway, but the plot andaction is too lacking to appeal to a wider audience.

After the terrible Derailed Van Damme teamed up with Replicant director Ringo Lam again. Some will say come on Van Damme in a drama. But he plays it like a normal he doesn't go for a Shakespeareian performance. It stars Jean Claude Van Damme as Kyle Le Blanc & Lawence Taylor as 451. You start off a guy has broken into Kyle LeBlanc's house his wife was killed by the burglar & Kyle shows up & finds his wife he chases after this guy. At the trial he's found innocent Kyle LeBlanc is filled with rage he shoots & kills the man who murdered his wife Kyle ends up getting sentenced to life in prison. So he was working overseas in Russia so he'll be in a prision in Russia. We are introduced to 451 & Lawence Taylor has a ton of great monologue's. There is 1 guy named Billy the jailers have this guy they like Andrei & he just has his way with Billy if you've not seen this movie you should. Kyle sees what happened to Billy & he starts a fight with Andrei which puts Kyle in solitary he tries to take his life it is a slow build to Kyle's fight with Andrei & I liked it I wasn't board with a slow pace case I'm involved with these characters & I usually don't care for the art house film making but it works. Kyle has a beard & long hair he's been in the cell for a long time he faces off with Andrei it show how Kyle LeBlanc has lost his humanity he kills Andrei just the way he does & it is well done. We got this guy in a wheel chair he told the guards that Billy was going to escape while it's probably not the right thing he did result in Billy being killed 451 burns him to death. Billy tells Kyle before he dies "Don't let them make you something you aren't." These fights are done for money & entertainment for jailers Generals. No matter how big the fighters The Generals bring in Kyle refuses to fight them. 451 helps Kyle escape during the riot. The prison is closed 3 months later & that's pretty much the movie. Ringo Lam did a great job directing I hear he can be a pain to work for but he can take small budget films & make them look theatrical so he's probably a PRO. I mean he made it look more theatrical than Predators & Mas hitt y which should've went direct to video. Jean Claude Van Damme he can do drama if his ego isn't involved. Lawence Taylor did a very good job he's better than a lot of pro athletes that go into acting. I do warn you it is hardcore gorey I'm not talking about retarted SAW BS. This is gritty if you remember that movie The Quest years ago this was what The Quest should've been. That waa directed by Van Damme & you can tell his ego was involved it wasn't good. I promise I'll do a 2nd round of JCVD reviews & bury The Quest. This was a recommendation so I recommend it too.

I love all of Van Damme's movieshe rocksgreat actiongreat humor in some of his moviesthe man can actand Im' proud of his roots of where he came frommust of taken a while to learn our languageI can hear it in his voice that he might be from Russia or somewhere else outside the US. he's amazing. and should never stop making movies til he's either too old too. or has had enough of showbiz. he'll always go out with a bang in my eyes when it comes to movies. I saw the trailer for this and immediately got it on dvd. the whole story is amazing. get this movie.

I knew that Jean Claude Van Damn had created some pretty-boy kickboxing movies a decade ago. When my husband was interested in watching "In Hell", I wasn't enthusiastic about it. Wow, did our roles reverse. He was soon bored. I, on the other hand, had realized that when you scratched beneath the surface, there was a whole lot more to this film than realistic prison violence. My redneck husband is also the "Keeper of the Remote" and it wasn't long before he was surfing other cable channels. I must buy it! 3-Star rating because I only watched the first half but I'm hopeful that it ends up with a 4-star or above!Way-to-go Jean Claude!KDi

"In Hell," directed in 2003 by Ringo Lam, is one of Jean-Claude VanDamme's better efforts since making his move to straight-to-video inthe early 20th century. Van Damme plays Kyle LeBlanc, a man who issentenced to life imprisonment in a corrupt Eastern Europeanpenitentiary after killing the man who murdered his wife. The warden atthis penitentiary makes money by setting up brutal fights between theinmates. He befriends several other inmates, and makes enemies out ofthe two rival gangs fighting for control of the prison. The fights inthis movie are pretty exciting and brutal. True to Van Damme's promisefor more realistic fights in his movies, "In Hell" has them, and hetakes a licking himself, in addition to delivering enoughcrowd-pleasing punch-outs of his own. There's none of that flashyflying spin-kick stuff that's was so prominent in his earlier works. This movie actually contains some of his best and most realistic fightsequences since "Lionheart" (1990). Remarkably, like in "JCVD" (2008),Van Damme shows that under the right directorial guidance he can be astrong dramatic presence on-screen. While he's not as good here as hewas "JCVD," it's obviously a step on the right track. On the down side, the plot could have used a lot of work, and this movie seems to be aretread of "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) plus Van Damme's own"Death Warrant" (1990) and the previously mentioned "Lionheart."7/10

Wow, i made the mistake of watching this film on Van Dammes reputationalone. Big mistake as this film's budget was probably less than mythird grade allowance. Obviously they could not pay JCVD enough to stayin top form as his roundhouse was sluggish. If it was not for VanDammes reputation as a superb actor, one might assume after watchingthis film that he was cut from the high school drama club. I think hemight be trying to take too much on himself now as an actor. JCVD ifyou read this, remember, less is more! Do not watch this film unlessyou are about to commit suicide, as after you have watched it you willwant to! Not even on par with Cyborg or Replicant.

In Russia, the American engineer Kyle LeBlanc (Jean-Claude Van Damme) istemporarily working overseas in a steel mill. His wife Grey LeBlanc (MarnieAlton) and him are in love for each other and Kyle intends to spend somevacation days together with her on the beach. However, Grey is raped andkilled by a man when Kyle is coming back home. The killer is arrested, butthe corrupt Russian judge absolves him. Kyle makes justice with his ownhands and shoots the assassin in the building of the tribunal. He is judgedand sent to a life sentence without parole in a violent and corrupt Russianprison. There, he has a journey to hell with his body, fighting a contestcalled "sparka', and soul, through his rage. His redemption emerges throughthe memory of his wife. The theme `prison' is very commercial and I do notknow how many movies I have seen about brutal prisons: `Midnight Express',`Brubaker', `Undisputed', `The Last Castle', `Mean Machine', `Lock Up'immediately pops in my memory. `Hell' is another good movie about prison, and certainly one of the best of Van Damme filmography. Although being fullof clichés, the story is not bad. The choreographies of the fights are verywell executed. Even Van Damme has a good performance as a man who becomesblind by his rage and fights against his own demons looking for redemption. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): `Hell'

"In Hell" is a prison movie -- and as we all know -- prison movies comewith their own set of clichés. You know the type... the ruthless headprison guard, a corrupt warden, inmates of various nationalities andtendencies complete with their own stories all within the worst ofliving conditions. "In Hell" couples this with an utterly brutal andultimately dehumanizing set of fight pieces set inside the corruptlifeless Russian prison that come together to form the latest opus fromRingo Lam and Van Damme. Now you'll either look past these clichésmaybe even embrace them and enjoy the movie as-is or you won't andshould turn back now. Those heeding the warning will venture to find amovie akin to the 'been-there-seen-that' trait, but with a Van Dammetwist and shaped by the dark foreboding hand of Ringo Lam."In Hell" finds Kyle LeBlanc (Van Damme) living in the former people'srepublic. Married and working at a steel mill, we get the notion prettyfast that his marriage has taken a few bumps because of his job'splacement. He promises to make things right, but before he can his wifeis systematically murdered. In court justice is corrupt and Kyle has tofind vengeance in the form of a guard's firearm just outside thecourtroom as he kills his wife's murderer in a fit of cold blood. Thenext we see of Kyle he is a torn weary man on a bus in handcuffs on hisway to his new life inside the worst prison man has ever seen. A prisonwhere there is no escape and men fight to the death. This is thepremise of "In Hell".The prison itself is this cold, dark, violent and repulsive rat trap ofa place. It feels almost too real. You feel the coldness, thedestruction of mankind happening within it's walls through Kyle, thesubhuman food and lodging, everything. It's there. You see it, hear it,feel it. Kyle wants out and so will you.Let me just say that Van Damme's latest efforts have been a mixed bag(and that's being kind). The truth is he's fallen quite a ways from his"Universal Soldier" days and that's what makes "In Hell" such astriking success. This isn't a patterned Van Damme movie. This isn'tVan Damme playing Van Damme. The fighting scenes don't even display theusual Van Damme-ish feel to them and that's definitely a good thing. They aren't highly complicated or choreographed. There is no videoeffects or weird camera angles of any sort to highlight the fighting. It's just raw primitive fighting. No mastering of the martial arts justfisticuffs that are brutal and short to the point. If you watch your share of b-movies some familiar faces in thesupporting cast help things along too. Names like Juan Fernández,Robert LaSardo and real life ex-pro footballer Lawrence Taylor (AnyGiven Sunday) aptly named prisoner "451" that you'll have to see thefilm to fully understand why."In Hell" is a real nice chance of pace for Van Damme and for thatreason alone, I recommend this movie. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a bigVan Damme fan myself and "In Hell" is not striking movie-making, butfor a DTV prison-farce starring Van Damme of all people if anythingit's at least decent.

I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this film, as it was a veryhard hitting and brutal drama, which I didn't expect from a Van Dammefilm.Certain scenes I found profoundly disturbing, but also very gripping andcompelling. I think this film deserved more praise than it recieved onit'srelease, but fans of Van Damme will like it anyway!!! It may also come asasurprise to a more varied movie goer, like it did to me.

As others have noted, both this and "Wake of Death" have shown a change in direction for Van Damme, choosing to delve more into complex roles, drama, and believable acting, rather than two dimensional fight movies. Not that I suspect we will be seeing him on the nomination list at the Oscars any time soon, but here again he turns in a credible performance. After being jailed for avenging his wifes murder, he is subjected to a brutal Eastern Block prison regime, where the dollar rules, the guards and warden are corrupt, and you sleep with one eye open. We see the gradual deterioration of an outwardly "normal" man, whose only means of survival is to become one of the cruel and violent inmates he has come to despise. The fight sequences are short, snappy, brutal and bloody (no box splits, or flying spinning back kicks here) and the viewer is immersed into the savage world of gangs, violence, and desperation. "In Hell" is an apt title, but the film has some surprising twists, and different outcome to what one might expect, and is well directed and well scripted throughout. Hardly an original story, but the European makeover adds another dimension to a standard prison flick of say "Lock Up" or many others. On the whole, I recommend this movie, and hope to see Van Damme continue to develop his characters in this way. I've always enjoyed his other, and often more aimless fight movies so felt a teeny bit agrieved at the lack of martial arts, but overall the movie is pretty darn good. Enjoy!

What movie were these people watching? I'm reading "Oscar worthyperformance" and "Great acting." It must have been a different movie than Isaw because what I watched was an awful, completely cliched, poorly writtenprison film where Van Damme plays an AMERICAN. Now I realize he's supposedto be Cajin, but I have never heard a Cajin with a Belgiumaccent. This movie has every prison cliche you can imagine: the young guy whose inprison for the first time who gets passed around like candy, the main guywho killed the guy who raped his wife and ends up in prison, the dirtyprison guards and warden who take payoffs for anything, and of course, and Iwondered how long before I'd see this character and it was about 30 minutesinto the movie, the guy who "can get you anything."This movie was just unwatchable and I admit, I finally couldn't finish it anhour into it. Lawrence Taylor plays the quiet narrator who spouts offphilosophy written by a fifth grader. Van Damme plays a guy who can't fightwhich is pretty stupid since he's not a good actor and we all know he canfight. And Ringo Lam; this guy is one of the most overrated directors sinceJohn Woo. I love the credits. It's all small white letters until it comes tothe "directed by" credit. Then it's huge block letters with Ringo Lam'sname, like he's a reason to watch this film. Let me give you a little tip:He's a reason to avoid it.

In Hell is an emotional gripping prison movie, that really had mehooked from the get go, and if this isn't Van Damme's best performanceit's very close to being it!. There are no fancy kicks from Van Dammein this movie just pure raw fighting and I absolutely loved it, and theopening is very sad and especially gripping, as you will feel for VanDamme's character, plus you will be rooting for Van Damme to get outand escape!. One scene that really makes me cringe is when Van Dammebangs his head against the cement wall in the prison repeatedly, andLawrence Taylor and Van Damme in my opinion made a good team and hadpretty good chemistry together, plus for a DTV film this is as good asit gets!. It's extremely well made and directed, and most of thecharacters are pretty likable as well(except the villains), plus theare many disturbing images and scenes as well!. Overall This is a mustsee for every Van Damme fan, as I Believe it's one of his absolute bestfilms!. ***** out of 5The Acting is fantastic!. Jean Claude Van Damme is terrific here ifthis isn't his best performance, then it's very close to it he reallygave a stellar acting performance here, and you will really feel forwhat he goes through, I think Van Damme could be onto big things inacting as he is really mature now!. Lawrence Taylor is excellent as451, he Doesen't say much but his performance is there and I think youall will be surprised by the performance he gives!. Lloyd Battista andCarlos Gómez are good as the villains you will hate them!. Chris Moiris good as Billy he was likable, it was really sad with what happenedto him.

Forget the wise cracking, smooth muscle man we've seen in previousfilms flying slo-mo through to air to knock some poor guys lights out.In this, Van Damme is very human and far from invulnerable. It is thebest film in terms of his acting, as he goes through a range of darkemotions, including despair, blind rage and loathing. He actually actsin this movie. He plays an American man married to a Russian woman and living apeaceful life in Russia. Until his wife is murdered by a Russian thug, for no particular reason I might add. The thug is connected to themafia, so is released due to the corrupt judge being paid off. VanDamme exacts his own bloody justice in a burst of anger, and isincarcerated in a particularly nasty Russian prison. This is no holiday for Van Damme, as the prison is full ofanti-American convicts, sexual predators and an assortment of dangerousgangsters. This film, like many other prison films, addresses thesubject of rape, by showing the targeting of a young, weak Americanman. Something which haunts Van Damme's character. The main element of the film centres on a brutal, no holds barredfighting tournament that the sadistic warden and staff organise for theprisoners. It is here than Van Damme becomes a champion of the ring, thrashing his opponents in a street brawling style. Things start tochange however, when Van Damme realises he is becoming what theauthorities want him to become, he is forgetting who he is.This film has a mainly downbeat style, and is a lot more gritty and rawthan Van Damme's usual work. It has several disturbing scenes and darkideas, but also has a message worth bearing in mind. Recommended to nonVan Damme fans as well as fans, as this is where he tries somethingdifferent.

IN HELL was a great movie, its 1 of Van Damme better movies. Its just asgood as REPLICANT.The acting was very good, especially from Van Damme. The brutal fightsweregreat. I loved it.Though, the movie did feel rushed in the beginning & there were someminorcgi used that was a bit noticable. But overall, this is a must see for Van Damme fans & those who love dark, gritty prison movies. Van Damme has totally redeemed himself after thedisaster that was called - DERAILED.
Thomas Jolliffe (25 April 2012)
Van Damme's latest effort on paper reads much like many other films hehas done, in which he finds himself in a situation when he mustparticipate in illegally set up fights. This film being set in prisonis also particularly similar to Death Warrant. These are really wherethe similarities end because this is more dramatic and less flashy thanthose. There are no sweeping Van Damme kicks played in glorious slowmotion, he doesn't seem invincible and is not able to summon greatamounts of strength to down 7ft behemoths in one punch, in this film heis an ordinary guy. If he fights someone who looks like they could takehim, then he will have a tough time, and get beat up.This film allows JC to play a character with some depth and someemotion, a character who we sympathise with in the way his wife's deatheffects him. He kills his wife's murderer when he is let free and sogoes to jail and we see the way in which his character goes on adownward spiral without his wife. While this film attempts to have asympathetic character it has such a hackneyed script, full of clichésthat it ends having ultimately wasted one of Van Damme's bestperformances and some classy direction from Ringo Lam. He is a gradeabove other b-movie directors and this film looks great, he worked witha good cinematographer and editor to make this look well beyond its 15million or so budget. There isn't a single surprise in the film and many of the supportingcast are bad but the better actors all produce some good moments. Youfeel for certain characters, it is a shame that the majority of thecrew and cast aren't matches for the more talented members, however itdoes allow JC to stand out. The fights are not about being flash they are rough and ready and packa punch, and are superbly edited. It makes a change for Van Damme butfar more watchable than other films like Nowhere to Run which showed noflashy martial arts. The fighting in this is more like properwrestling. As with many low budget movies there are problems with the specialeffects, such as dodgy CGI airplanes and a poor synth score. In the endthough the film was an enjoyable watch while not great it featuredquality in the direction and with a decent performance by Van Dammesstandards, were not talking Academy awards by any means but possibly aVideo Premiere award nomination. ***

I imagine that this is how the Producers pitched this idea to the studioanyway (-:I find myself in the unusual situation of having watched a JCVD movie thatis really, really good !! This is easily the best movie he has evermade. So why is it different from the rest of his tat ?It's because he does NOT play the usual indestructible, cocky, macho, killing machine that he always plays. He plays a NORMAL guy, who is not afighter of any kind, who is forced to fight to survive, and even then he isnot very good at it. AND it contains a MYSTIC MOTH !In fact, the first 50 minutes contains no real fighting at all, just acting, and the movie is all the better for it.And when it does come, there are NO slow motion roundhouse kicks and dizzysomersaults, just plain old brutal prison fist fighting. This film is set in Russia. JCVD's character is fitted up by a corrupt judgefor the rape of his wife, he is sentanced to "life withoutparoll"The wilderness hell-hole he is sent to makes Shawshank look like a SheratonHotel, with sodomy and murder rife. But for some reason, this Russian prisonalso has many American prisoners whom JCVD befriends? He is constantly bullied by the other prisoners and forcibly thrown in 'TheHole' (solitary cell with on-suite open sewer) where his dead wife visitshim in the form of a MOTH !!!Anyway, why spoil the story, you really should rent it out and seeforyourselves. It really is excellent !! I wish JC would make more films likethis.

This movie has taken a lot of flack from two polar opposite groups:those who prefer the standard Van Damme movie, many of whom havecommented that this film doesn't have enough violence, and those whohate the standard Van Damme film so much that they refuse to give thisone a chance. Those not in either faction will find much to like. Inthe same way that Schwarzenegger made a perfect robot, Van Damme givesan excellent performance as a shell-shocked prisoner forced to fightother criminals, eliminating his emotions as he pounds his foes. Thefights, far from glorified, are painful to watch, and it's made clearthat by participating in them the hero is destroying himselfinternally. Indeed, some fairly deep themes of downfall and redemptionare embedded in this simple beat-em-up. Ignore the bad average ratingand see it for yourself.

Jean-Claude Van Damme,(Kyle), "Wake of Death",'04, wound up in prisonjust because of police stupidity and has a life sentence in a place noperson would ever want to stay even for five (5) minutes. Kyleencounters all kinds of strange people and very horny men who desiresex the Hersey way and lots more. The prison personnel and their wivesenjoyed watching boxing matches in which the prisoners fought to killeach other. There was all kinds of corruption among the guards andinmates, some of them betrayed their fellow inmates, which sent them tosewers and filthy conditions to sleep and eat. Jean-Claude Van Dammeand the cast of actors did a fantastic acting performance, a verygraphic story about the horrors of men in prison.
