Not worth paying to see

I thought after reading several reviews about this film i would go andwatch it and i must say i was disappointed, Yes the film is a budgetfilm and maybe it could be argued that the story is fresh but thatwould be wrong, This film is a cheap imitation of Poltergeist, and inall honestly it would struggle to scare a 13 year old because there isnothing in the film that is remotely scary,On the odd occasion the filmdoes try to scare you it falls flat the tension builds you sitwondering when the scary jump moment will come but it never does. Youreally do come out the Cinema feeling like you had just sat throughsomeone's school project, go rent Poltergeist close the curtains crankup the sound open a bag of popcorn and enjoy I guarantee it would bemoney better spent.

Very Scary

This movie had it all and you really need to watch it in a theater or at least in a dark room with volume turned up to get full effect. I cannot believe some people being so negative about it and saying Paranormal Activity was better. INSIDIOUS is at least 1,000 times scarier that both of those horrible Paranormal Activity movies. If someone does not think this movie is scary then they must love violence and blood. There is a difference in being scary/creative/creepy opposed to just being bloody and stupid. If you like movies like The Ring and The Others you will LOVE this movie. If Saw and other bloody films are your interest, then don't even bother watching this creative ghost/horror movie!!!

Scary but not great

From the moment I saw the trailer I was pretty much into it as itlooked scary. Moreover James Wan is the one directing which makes it amust. Well frankly this was a lowdown from dead silence for me. Wan isthe person who cleverly places a brilliant twist in the end which makesthe movie being rated higher. Its not quite the same thing here.Initially the moment movie starts you're gonna get a hint that this isgonna be scary as hell. The music, the makeups everything adds to thecreepy scenario. Actually its scary in places and you might get jumpy. However towards the later part of the movie it feels stupidscript-wise. I guess they needed a better script. The direction is inhis own style again. Some humor have also been added which makes itmore creepy. It could have been much better that's what I feel. Anywaysas the matter of fact, its definitely gonna scare you no matter what,so go for it.

Great horror but not a awesome horror movie

Just happened i bought this movie and i watch.Rumor say that this showget high rating so i decide to watch but does not creep me out and makeme close my eyes and not give me some thrill. But it give me want toknow the ending that it. OK i give some short summary about this movieis about the father and his son has ability sleep walk to the spiritworld dimension and some very nasty spirit want their body and his sontrap in spirit world dimension only his father can rescue him. If thismovie transform as PC game like FEAR and Silent hill. i definitely playit.Yes, this movie too fiction and very faking. The boy acting so downto the drain. I think this movie is not creep you up bot just some lameentertainment horror movie. In the end i hope this movie is best ifconvert as game.

Eugene Novikov (21 May 2012)

This is no trifle aimed at undiscerning teenagers on a slow weekend. It is ruthlessly calculated to scare the bejeezus out of you.

Kevin McCarthy (20 May 2012)

The film delivers haunted house-type scares throughout but I just wish the second half was as good as the first. Wait for the flick to come out on DVD.

Horrible

This review is from: Insidious (Amazon Instant Video) When I gear up to watch a horror movie, I expect a whole hell of a lot. My standards for horror are VERY high. This movie misses the mark by about 700 miles. There are a few creepy moments scattered throughout, and places where you see the potential for a truly terrifying movie, but it pulls back from every good idea it has. The concept is great, the movie is NOT. It gets super cheesy toward the end, like, unforgivably cheesy. Look, some men's trash is others treasure. I was wildly unimpressed with this movie. I hoped for a lot more.

Finally a modern horror film more than worth seeing...

Come on people! Why are so many saying this film is not original, idon't know?! Their are certain motifs to consider when making a film, especially one that is in the realm of horror and those motifs dictatewhat sub genre to put it in, but enough about labels. this film is in acategory all its own. why? it's down right GOOD! The acting is on point(lin shay is always amazing!) the direction is beautiful (each shot orframe rather is like a series of paintings and the scenes in "thefurther" are breathtaking) the story IS original. The writers set up aworld for the dead and its connection with the living that is quiterefreshing. You don't need to be a horror film fan to enjoy this film, especiallysince it has close to no gore, and relies mainly on suspense. If yourlooking for a great story, close to a folklore or an extended bedtimestory this is the movie for you.

Scariest Movie I Have Ever Seen

Without a doubt, this is the scariest movie I have ever seen. It isn'ta movie that only makes stuff jump at you, 'Insidious' combines suddencreatures jumping out at you with disturbing, creepy figures you can'teven bare to look at. I personally can't remember the last horror moviethat actually mad me scared, but this I will say is the first tosucceed. Plot is very good, when a kid goes into a coma and his soul getstrapped in another world where demons roam, and attempt to possess hisbody in order to escape to the real world to live again. It may notseem scary, but trust me, it was really, really horrifying. The waythey looked, with their weird smiles and close up images of them makeyou jump and scream. It was clear that 70's and 80's horror films inspired this movie. Withhigh pitched violins to build up the scene where something reallycreepy happens. Some scenes were so scary I had to cover an eye. It wasthe way the creatures looked that did most of the scares. Some of thepredictable scenes scared you because you knew something was going tohappen, but didn't know what it was. A movie with high pitched violins, really loud noises, and lots of screams is a descent way to define it. The movie starts off kind of slow, but progressively gets better andbetter as it goes on. There are a few shaky camera angles and some darkshots that tried to make it feel scary, but you can't seen anything. Inthe shots like this, they only last for a few seconds before changingto give you a better view of the scene. This is a film that will make you always want to know what happensnext, and makes you stick around until the very end. If you like horrormovies, go and see it. This WILL make you terrified and will give younightmares. do yourself a favour and go to the movies and see it assoon as you can, it is worth every penny.

Definitely the Best Scary Movie in a LOOOOOONG Time...

Insidious is by FAR the best scary movie to come out in what feels likea very VERY long time. It wasn't just a "good" scary movie, but agenuinely "scary" scary movie. From the opening shot to the credits, everything just seemed to work. There were no big special effects andthere was no cheesy CGI which in my opinion, really brings down thequality of supernatural movies. The scares were genuine and a few partsreally had the whole audience gasping and jumping out of their seats. Imyself had chills...which hasn't happened with any scary movie in thepast 8 years. Granted, it's not a perfect movie, and there are some ofthe usual scary movie clichés, but in no way do they rob the movie ofbeing enjoyable. Overall, Insidious is creepy and very scary and mostimportantly, a FUN movie to watch. It gives you the scare you want andthe enjoyment you want from walking through a Haunted House duringHalloween time. After watching this movie, horror directors and writersshould takes notes and tips from James Wan and Leigh Whannel.

just horrible

I'm sad to say that i was extremely disappointed with this moviebecause honestly, it wasn't scary at all.. I watched it with mygirlfriend and throughout the movie we couldn't stop telling each otherhow much it sucked. The whole movie had the feel of an episode of"American Haunting." It felt like watching a half developed remake of"Poltergeist" "follow my voice" "come into the light Carol Ann"Granted, there are a few jumpy scenes if you're the "jumpy" type but inno way shape or form would i call this a great horror movie. Those thatfind this scary probably peed their pants watching "Scream 4" I wouldgo into detail but i don't want to spoil the "chilling" experience.smh..

Insidious... Just the name shows this movie, is not one to see

The "thriller" Insidious is not what it seemed like it would be at all,not scary, so-so storyline, and horrible graphics filling the partsthat ran out of plot. As scary parts came along, the giggles becameplentiful as graphics, music, setting, and acting were all horriblyentertaining and not set up the way they should have been. After movinginto a new house, a young family's son unexpectedly falls into a comaand tests are done with results that are all but helpful, just afterthe tragic accident, the family learns that their new abode is'haunted' or so they think. In the end of several happenings that throwthe husband and wife into a crazy state, they finally decide to move toa new, not 'haunted' home. While unpacking the wife undergoes yetagain, another happening with a ghost that throws her into turmoil andconfusion, pushing the family to greater heights and forcing them intothe Ghostbuster yellow pages. After the experts check out the home, they decide that they immediatelyneed to put a plan into action in order to save the sons live, whom isnot haunted by the house, but by his dreams. Usually, a film has aleast one great trait, this one does not- the filming is way off forwhat it should be, the acting is not in character, and the plot makesno sense and sparks no attention what so ever. For a credit, the makerswent in the right direction for an actual thriller that makes you jump, but ruined it with all else included in the movie. Obviously, I foundthis movie as one of the worst I have ever seen, scary movies are notsupposed to make you laugh throughout them, this ends with a harshscore of 4 out of 10.

...seriously?

So, the previews, prior to the film coming out, made it appear to be a nice, creepy, perhaps subtle haunted house story. Something with a ton of suspense...maybe not the most original plot and some really great actors. If only they'd decided to go ahead and make THAT movie...This was awful. Just awful. However, it started out really well. As per usual, we get the seemingly normal, attractive, happy family just going about their daily lives when...suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, bad things happen. Suspense starts to build when they begin hearing strange sounds, seeing strange things...it's all very creepy and simple at this point in the movie. Very effective. Then we enter the second half. When things REALLY started going downhill. The explanation for what was going on was interesting enough, not very original, maybe a bit silly but, interesting nonetheless. The first time I saw the "demon", I was shocked. Really shocked. Mostly because of how idiotic it looked. Then I started thinking wow, they actually put THAT in a movie. I brushed it off and said to myself that it had been great so far...maybe we won't see it again. But we do...time and time again. Along with other ridiculous looking creatures and people or...whatever you want to call them. The entire thing was just absurd. In the second half, I felt like I'd started watching a different movie. The entire tone changed, the pacing changed, the look and feel of the movie changed. It turned into completely cheesy trash. The sets were horrible, the costumes, the makeup, the effects were some of the worst I've ever seen. The guys who did Saw (only the first 2 Saw movies are watchable) and Dead Silence (terrible, terrible movie) have NO idea what "creepy" or "scary" looks like. Not to mention I feel like they keep copying themselves. The "twist" they always stick in there right at the end...ridiculous! It makes me mad at just how ridiculous...I just sat there shaking my head when I wasn't laughing. Someone obviously took a trip to a costume store and stocked up on as much discount makeup, bad masks and bad wigs as they could find. Cheap, cheap, cheap! It all just felt so lazy.Overall, what we have is something that could have been a really great movie but it was directed and designed by guys who have really bad taste and absolutely NO clue as to what "scary" is. A complete and total disappointment. I can't help but feel like James Wan is somewhere counting his money and laughing at everyone that wasted our time watching this mess.Avoid it. Unless you think old women in gas masks and a Tiny Tim obsessed Darth Maul haunting a house has some entertainment value somehow.

So scary....

When I first saw a preview for this movie, I knew it looked like it hadpotential. It had been a while since I saw a decent scary movie so Iwas looking forward to it. I went into it expecting some scares butnothing too bad. Wrong. This movie scared me out of my wits. I don'tthink I have ever jumped more during any other scary movie. Theaudience was spooked too. I saw many other people jumping out of theirseats and even heard a few actual screams. What I loved about this movie was that it actually tries to scare you,not gross you out. The images are frightening for sure. Insidiousdoesn't waste any time trying to creep you out. The scares alreadystart with the opening credits. I sure was not expecting this to be oneof the scariest movies i've seen but it lives up to that. That beingsaid, I don't think I'd have the guts to see it again!

The kind of bold, high quality horror film genre fans deserve but rarely receive.

good scary interesting movie

I was sceptical about watching this movie as a friend had told me itwas awful, but after watching it myself i found it thoroughlyenjoyable, the scary scenes were jumpy and genuinely creepy and thechoice of song (tiny Tim's tiptoe through the tulips) worked reallywell and gave brilliant effect. Before watching the film i googled itand found a lot of hype about the red faced demon which lookedterrifying from the images on google, but when watching the movie thedemon itself is not scary at all. The old woman from josh's childhoodwas very creepy and at the start of the movie i literally shut my eyes.Overall a really enjoyable horror flick and a pleasant surprise.

Great Scares But Some Fizzle

Lets face it, its tough to come up with a new horror idea that'sremotely plausible. Better to achieve a compromise regarding thesuspension of belief or, as does INSIDIOUS, pay homage to other finemovies. This movie borrows heavily from POLTERGEIST, with some nod toTHE SHINING and maybe even BEETLEJUICE. Rose Byrne is great, just veryconvincing, neither too low key nor over-the-top hysterical. Lin Shayewas superb, nothing short of a scene stealer! Barb Hershey -greatscream, right from the school of Karen Black! Patrick Wilson'sperformance is a bit short, maybe a little too passive. Would've likedto have seen Sam Rockwell in this role! But the scares, which are trulyan art form, are cleverly conceived and executed - really cannot askfor more in the horror genre nowadays. Unfortunately, the last portionof the film - the "netherworld" - is under achieving and not up to parwith the first 80 minutes. But I must still give INSIDIOUS a thumbs-up!

Scary...

I went to go see this movie with a twelve year old friend of mine andas we walked into the theater, we missed about 5-10 minutes of it, so Idon't know how to explain how it begun, but this movie was SCARY. Threechildren and a mom and dad and one child falls off a ladder and getshurt. The night after, the parents try to wake him up at breakfast andhe didn't wake up, so they took him to the hospital, three monthslater... and they were regarding the boy. Suddenly, their familyexperience demons and stuff which appear to be the spirit of the childand then the mom plans to move. They have these people come in and tryto figure out what's wrong and most people are afraid of the demonscoming out of him and I didn't understand this until the lady came upand explained why the kid was sleeping for a long period of time. Thefamily try their best to get the child out of his own world and get himback on Earth so that he could wake up, so they had the dad sleep toget him back. When I went into the theater to watch a movie about astro-projection,me and my friend were scared to death. It was scarier than Poltergiest.I mean, what? Like a sleeping film of Poltergiest? Well, yeah, I alsothought it had a reference to Inception too, you know, the new movie.Yeah, both of these create new worlds.Personally, at the beginning, I found it to be kind of cliché, but thenI got over it and enjoyed it a lot. The acting was superb, the scripthad enough details to even scare adults and the storyline was just. But, I'd be darned, I wouldn't recommend this film for anyone under 14.It would be too scary and kids would have nightmares. I hope I don't.There are very little comedy and mostly serious moments of the familytrying to wake the kid up.Insidious: 7/10

Peter Galvin (11 May 2012)

Insidious is very much a 21st century modern horror movie, which is to say it's more interested in tricks and scares than 'horror'.

Modest Horror Film Delivers the Goods

Director James Wan and long-time screenwriting partner Leigh Whannell have created a compelling and efficient scare engine that plays on some of our simplest fears - that someone close to us is in danger situation that we don't understand. Insidious doesn't try to reinvent the demonic possession film but instead mashes it up with the haunted house sub-genre with astral projection thrown in for good measure. The end result is an entertaining film that resides somewhere between the flashy style of Drag Me to Hell (Unrated Director's Cut) and the unsettling, white knuckle scare tactics of Paranormal Activity with engaging characters that you grow to care about over time."Horror 101: The Exclusive Seminar" features director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell talking about how they first came up with the notion of astral projection, which they hadn't seen much in film and place it in a haunted house setting. Whannell wanted to make sure that the audience got to know and identify with the Lambert family so that they would care about what happens to them later on. He and Wan come across as intelligent and eloquent with a good knowledge of the horror genre and its conventions."On Set with Insidious" takes a look at the making of the film with plenty of on set footage as we see Wan working with the cast and crew. We see how one of the film's stunts is performed and an alternate take of a scene. This extra provides some nice insights into filming."Insidious Entities" takes a look at the ghosts and demons that appear in the film. Wan and Whannell talk about their distinctive look and where the inspiration for some of them came from and why.
