Terrible sequel.

(Spoilers are only for certain scenes, not for any important marks inthe film.)Whether it's that I was a lot younger and therefore found the first onea lot more funny during first viewing or that it genuinely was awful, Ihope my review comes clear to those who need a first hand view on thesequel to Mr English's appearance. In comparison to the first film, I consider none of this to be a'masterpiece', not even the slightest.. As the film becomes less andless funny throughout, it also becomes more and more predictable inwhat's going to happen; "Take a seat, Johnny.. but make sure you don'tsit on that exercise ball that is coincidentally in shot of the cameraand you bounced up and down so the audience DEFINITELY acknowledge itspresence!", or how about the fighting scene with the monk? When themonk's psyching himself up, he turns around for a few seconds longerthan necessary, and what do you know? Johnny English has gone missing!Or even the scene in the casino, his assistant says "the Chinese manwith the spectacles", now if it wasn't bad enough that this descriptionis vague enough for anyone to see a number of people matching thisdescription, guess what? Johnny mistakes one man with another WHILSTsat between them! I felt like I was watching a cartoon. Now I don't aimto ruin these scenes for anyone, but if they weren't obvious that theywere going to happen before they did, then call me psychic. I foundmyself pulling a face to say "well, this is stupid." as well as raisingmy hand to suggest "did nobody but me really see that was coming?", butthe number of people in the cinema compared to seats free only feltlike a metaphor for the rating I'd give for the film at this point (4out of 23945873459843).Okay, it has it's funny points; the scene that made me laugh most wassomewhere near the beginning (about 10 minutes in if I rememberrightly) where he mistook some fruit sweets for a voice-changer(typical English) and the 'Susan' scene, I'll admit, that made mesmile. Yes, smile. Not roaring with laughter; a smile. It seems to methat this film only had one intention when it was being written andthat was 'Let's see how stupid we can get this', this was going roundand round in my head during the full film and it hit me towards the endthat Johnny English could've been played by nothing more than a clownhimself. The humour was limited (and even then, barely funny), thestoryline I wasn't really keen on and didn't match the first film atall (not even any references - that I'm aware of; I'm pretty sure hehad his assistant 'Boff', got a girl and became king or something? Noneof these are mentioned at all).To sum up, this film was definitely not worth seeing. I would rather Ihadn't seen it, scratch that, I'd rather they hadn't made it and leftthe first film as it ended, then I wouldn't be so disappointed about'Johnny English' as a whole.

OK OK, feel good movie.

OK, yeh that's the right word for movie. You see Mr. Atkinson (Mr. Bean) & expect something, which he delivers so so n so well (Like Mr. Bean)But the plot & other things in movie are really not that good. I wasexpecting a big plot, lots of humor, but movie doesn't show anythinglike this. Gags so called comedy scenes are old, you can easily predictthe humor. but few times in the movie, it is awesome !!!Why to see: good movie, surely one time watchable. Why Not: Not to the expectation , by story/screenplay and afterwatching First Johnny English, which was truly incredible.Final Verdict: Watchable, nothing much. Mr. Bean is surely incredible,he is the one to give credit for.

It Was Okay

MI 7s British Secret Agent, Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) is on thetrail of Vortex, a gang that specializes in assassinations worldwide, and who are now targeting the Chinese Premier. The reason this type of comedy survives is because we get a little ofeverything that went before: some James Bond plus gadgets, Mr. Magoo,Inspector Clouseau, Maxwell Smart, and chases more commonly known as aChinese Fire Drill. In here the chases are well timed and funny whether on foot, withvehicles or on snowy mountains and make for some very good Yuks allaround.Rowan Atkinson as the Mr. Bean character from the Bean movies was abreath of fresh air until the scripts lately didn't measure up toearlier work. So Mr. Atkinson decided to become Secret Agent JohnnyEnglish, who had spent the previous 5-years in Tibet learning how toclap with one hand but, in truth, hiding out for a mistake he wasaccused of making in his last assignment. Now, he has a chance atredeeming himself. When Johnny English returns to England some changes have taken place. Now we see the name Toshiba British Intelligence as his place of work.I expected to see more changes like this, but someone forgot to includethem. Most of this is physical comedy as you would expect, but 2-things standout as over the line: mugging and hitting MI 7's mother over the headwith a tray many times; and also tackling and hitting the Queen ofEngland over the head with a tray many times as well. In both instancesthere is the somewhat comedic mistaken identity gag, but here not funnyand not good. Mr. Atkinson's facial contortions still work and are funny as they arehis shtick, and he doesn't disappoint. I did not recognize Jillian Anderson who played Pamela as an MI 7behavioral scientist. She sure didn't look like the Scully from theX-Files I knew. Actually, she looked better. Blonde this time. Seethat, Mulder? As with most comedies the LOL stuff is mostly in the beginning, butthere are a few subdued Yuks later on. And, yes, being true tomandatory requirements for a Hollywood comedy there are some silly andstupid things that go on in here but, in a word, this was okay. (5/10)Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Sexual situations Yes, but briefly.Language: No.

not as funny as the first one

I was a little surprised after watching the film because it is not asfunny as the first one. I think the cat-window scene and the aircrafton board are the most laughable part. Do not be so excited thinkingthat it would be a funny Atkinson movie... I remember in the firstmovie that many dialogs and scenes were awesome and funny that thelaughter was not stoppable in minutes. Of course, there are some scenesthat have a British black humor like chasing on the roofs and on thesea. They are only making you smile. Chasing the wrong woman indifferent scenes, even at the end of film, gets you bored indeed.Overall, the film deserves 5-6 out of 10 at most.

Not a patch on the first one

When I saw the first Johhny English movie, it quickly became one of myall-time favourite films. This one wasn't 'bad' but was veryforgettable. There were several amusing parts but none of the laugh outloud moments that filled the original. I saw it in a cinema and younormally expect people to laugh loudly more often in a cinema with somany others around. Well the audience didn't seem to dislike it, butthere was none of the loud laughs you'd normally expect when a trulygood comedy is screened to a large crowd. From listening to the crowdyou might not have even guessed that what they were watching was infact a comedy since you'd get just as many laughs from a typical actionfilm where humour is secondary. My first thought when the film startedwas that it seemed to be ripping off the second Ace Ventura movie(which while also not as good as its original, was probably a bettersequel than this one). Those elements that seemed so similar to aceventura continued through the rest of the film. In the interests ofavoiding spoilers I won't be specific. Many of the jokes were verypredictable and cliché. The storyline and ending were also verypredictable. You could guess what was going to happen often enough thatit took a great deal of shine off the humour. If you're going to seethis film, make sure you at least sit through the credits. Those whodon't will miss what is probably the one truly funny scene of the film.

Tedious and pathetic

Foremost, I have to say I did not like the film Johnny English, andthat I am not a fan of comedian Rowan Atkinson's. Or, better said, I amnot a fan of his Mr. Bean facet's, even though he definitely made melaugh in the TV series Black Adder, and in his elegant stand-uproutines. I hope that that is enough justification of why I hated thesequel Johnny English Reborn, despite my sincere predisposition not totake it seriously and to assimilate its simpleton style of comedy. Iunderstand that the film intended to bring a kind and accessible kindof humor for the whole family...but I think it fatally failed on that. The main problem with Johnny English Reborn is that it takes the roadof using obvious and predictable jokes we saw coming from afar. Thecharacter Johnny English started as a parody of James Bond, and insight of the evolution from that character in Casino Royale, I thinkthat it would have been interesting to see the change reflected inJohnny English Reborn. Maybe, a subtle varnish of cynicalpost-modernism would have made this sequel less unbearable. What is more, the supporting cast includes some solid actors (GillianAnderson, Rosamund Pike and Dominic West) who are absolutely wasted inhere. So, in conclusion, Johnny English Reborn is a pathetic film whichdid not make me laugh at all. If you want to see good parodies of thesuper agent archetype, I recommend you the Austin Powers trilogy.

479th Review: Honestly, the ideal film for airflights. Well, I slept through it.....

Johnny English Reloads starts strongly with Atkinson in a TibetanMonastery (a good staple if ever there was), but as the plot unfolds soit unravels and becomes pretty montone - they're just simply aren'tenough ideas to sustain a full film. What we get isn't dreadful, but it really isn't much fun or that either- it spends most of its time pastichng the spy genre which is fairlyfunny but Bond did it better itself. This will be a commercial success as it is just exciting andinoffensive enough to be suitable for every flight ever, but it lacksthe wonderful creative spark that he, Curits, and Driscoll bought to MrBean - it is chiefly guilty, and I never thought I'd bring this chargeagainst Rowan Atkinson whose Secret Policeman's Ball et al are some ofthe best of British comedy of the past thirty years, of beingunimaginative, turgid, and often resorts to the sort of humour thatjust makes you smirk. It's the trading of originality for something too safe that makes thissellable, but it also makes it very dull indeed.

For Fans of Rowan Atkinson Only...

I was not able to watch the first Johnny English movie. Honestly I amwatching this film just because my kids wanted to, and my inner X-Philewanted to see Gillian Anderson again. "Johnny English Reborn" is predictably a James Bond spoof movie. Whatelse could a Rowan Atkinson movie be? Basically it was Mr. Bean playingJames Bond. In this story, we first see English re-training in anOriental shaolin temple. After earning his new skills, he returned toMI7 and was assigned to investigate an assassination plot on a Chineseofficial. And there his comic misadventures begin.Of course, Rowan Atkinson is Rowan Atkinson. His flexible face alonecould make even the lamest of situations funny. The gags were familiarand derivative from other spy spoofs, and even repetitive within themovie itself! There were some pretty neat action sequencesthough, particularly one involving a boat chase and another oneinvolving a fight in a ski lift. Unfortunately, Gillian Anderson wasnot really given much to do, which was even more disappointing for me.

Complete Enjoyable Trip!!

Went on a Sunday to watch this movie and Rowan Atkinson makes my day. Idon't mind all his bumbling's to put on a good show in the end. A funfamily watch. It will leave you in a feel good mood.I did not go with any expectations to watch this movie. Although I didfeel that overall the movie was a bit tepid and would say thatMr.Atkinson's antics managed to pull in the laughs. Rowan Atkinson looks lean and has lost some weight in the movie, a fewextra pounds and a little hair color would have perfected his look. Thesalt and pepper hair makes him seem like the neighborhood uncle :-)Those who do not like the character of Mr. Bean (I cant understand why)however may be heavily critical but I would recommend that you leaveaside your logic and reasoning and you will surely find the goofs worththe ride.

For me as a Flanlander living in the UK it is very interesting to learnabout the international reactions on this movie since it is really oneof the best British movies of all time.Main Plot: Though I can only catch English isolated phrases here andthere, I still find the film entertaining. I laughed out loud manytimes. The sets are also decorated nicely, each of the apartments areset up so that they really feel like a home sweet home. Apart from being entertaining, it also promotes tolerance anddiversity. ... Hillarios! For me, as a straight guy, it was a fantasticmovie. I really hope that the subtitles are o.k., since a lot oftranslations of Hollywood movies or TV-series are badly made (e.g.FRIENDS: brilliant in English, but terrible English translation) Enjoy!

Better than the first, Johnny English Reborn has some funny moments, and Rowan Atkinson is good, but I expect and want more from this franchise.

There is no doubt Rowan Atkinson is a comedic genius, if you haven'tseen it yet, check out "Rowan Atkinson: Live" and the "Fatal Beatings"sketch in particular. He's great on television, yet, I don't like mostof his movies, I hated the first Bean movie, didn't like the second oneand I also did not like the first Johnny English. Johnny English Rebornhas some very funny moments, it's easily better than the first one,it's still not an excellent showcase for Atkinson's talents, it'sdefinitely enjoyable but for me, there weren't any big laughs, or justmany regular laughs. The jokes in the first one were so easy, andtelegraphed in such a way, that they set up the gag so obviously, you're just counting down to the predictable payoff, and there werenumerous of these, landing on the wrong building, mistaking the partnerfor the bad guy and such. Johnny English Reborn has some fresh ideas, yes, we get the old "mistaking other people for some bad guy andhurting them" which is repeated three times in this one, and that getsold, but the rooftop chase is funny and clever and completely on themoney as it satirizes the recent frantic and over the top Hollywoodchase scene, and it reminded me of the awesome but admittedlyridiculous Casino Royale chase at the building site. There are somefunny visual gags with a helicopter, and near the end we finally get tosee Atkinson doing some great physical comedy as he literally fightswith himself. Gillian Anderson and Dominic West are both good, andthankfully they do not try to be funny, they play it straight and letAtkinson provide the laughs. English has a new partner in this movie, and I liked him better than the previous one. I kind of liked JohnnyEnglish Reborn, it's definitely an improvement on the first one, no biglaughs, but I enjoyed it nevertheless, and if you want to see Atkinsonat his very best, go watch "Rowan Atkinson: Live" and see a genius atwork.

The car's the star

There were some truly stunning performances from some of the film'sstars, notably the old timer and ever reliable Rolls Royce. This starmoved around the set with style and panache. Hot on his heals werethose other fantastic performers Mr Bavaria Motor Werks (known to hisbuddies as BMW) and Mr Range Rover. Unfortunately, the supporting actswere less impressive, with only minor rolls for Dunlop, Yamaha, Mr ARomeo and his side-kick Jaguar. Never mind! Oddly, there were someother stars in this film including some guy called Rowen Atkinsonthough his role was fairly minor compared to the film's main stars. Forgive my cynicism, in truth this is a light easy going comedythriller and it's a fun night out. There did seem to be more than theusual list of brand placement advertising, which became a little toonoticeable. Still, it's a good film, quite funny and with a convoluted plot thatdoes engage the grey matter. It does the job and you come out of thecinema happier than when you went in.

A Must Watch Comedy !!

Well, I have seen a lot of comedy movies of recent times and found afew of them pretty interesting too.But this one is really unique byitself. Personally I have always loved watching Rowan Atkinson almostin every character he played so far.The unprecedented combination ofeccentricity and innocence along with genuine good intention alwaysdoes the trick for him. Those who had enjoyed Johny English Part I likethe way I did, they would certainly be overjoyed after watching thismovie. For all other people also, it's a must watch comedy. The majorimprovement in Johny's character which has been seen in this movie isthat unlike the part I, he has become more smart and almost nearlyapproaching towards being a good secret agent. His basic intention ofdoing something great has always been evident in past movies and thesame is reflected here too.The direction of this movie has beenexecuted outstandingly. Musical score is also commendable. All in all, what I can say is that it's better for my readers to go and immediatelywatch the movie than sitting and studying my review here.... :)

A spy-comedy movie

After a mission in Mozambique went wrong, spy Johnny English (RowanAtkinson) was send to Tibet to learn discipline and martial arts. Butwhen plans for assassination of Chinese Premiere are uncovered, Johnnyis the only agent for the job. He has to find a last member of'Vortex', an organization that's behind murder plot. time is runningout, and people involved are not to be trust. This very simple comedyis a spoof of a James Bond movies. It is addressed to rather youngpublic. The movie is loaded with bad jokes and you have to try hard tolaugh. It's a shame, because such a great, funny and witty like RowanAtkinson, shouldn't be drained of these qualities. Unfortunately inJohnny English Reborn he is. Not a bad movie, rather boring.

More great fun with our favourite bungling spy! Johnny English is back and just as great as ever!

Finally after a much long await of eight years, the nations favouritehopeless spy Johnny English gets his much deserved sequel, though notquite as excellent as the first this sequel is still very enjoyable.Johnny English Reborn is set five years after his adventure in thefirst. Hiding out shamelessly in a cave in Tibet Johnny is called backinto service by Her Majesty once again to foil international assassinsin their plot to terminate the Chinese premier. Rowan Atkinson proves once again why he is one our best comedy actors. He plays English down to a T and if one ever had any doubts if he wouldbe able to step back into the role after eight years, seeing thisshould wipe those doubts out of your mind. He gives a hilariousperformance all the way through aided by sketches of slapstick thoughpredictable are wondrous in their genius of timing. They are so welltimed just like in the first film, it makes it all the more hilariousthanks to a sharp and witty script. There are numerous funny sequences throughout,(which had me chucklingand shouting with laughter) with too many to pick from. But myfavourites would have to be when English mistakens his bosses mother asa Korean assassin and undoubtedly the best one, which had me cryingwith laughter and has already been identified with other audiencereviewers on here is the scene where English is in a briefing sittingon a chair, which he tries to adjust, breaks and ends up the chairrising up and down. Great performances are also supplied by Rosamund Pike as apsychologist, Daniel Kaluuya as Agent Tucker who though good isn't inthe same league as Bough (Ben Miller) and Dominic West as Ambrose.Johnny English Reborn is a hilarious spectacle from start to finish, that those who liked the first film or who are a fan of Rowan Atkinsonshould see. The nations favourite bungling spy is back!

Daft but enjoyable

Johnny English is recalled to MI7 after being retired in disgrace. Heis set to work against a plot to assassinate the Chinese PrimeMinister. That's all you need to know as regards the plot. But you might need to know that this is a belated sequel to a filmwhich was commissioned on the back of a series of TV commercials forBarclaycard, featuring Rowan Atkinson as a secret agent in the JamesBond mold, suave but disastrously inept. Rowan Atkinson is best knownas Mr Bean, and also as UK TV's Blackadder. This movie is a great deal slicker than its predecessor, but it is justas daft. Much of it might appear not to be out of place in a James Bondmovie, except you're never sure when it will be done in slapstick orFrench farce style.I have seen some negative reviews and if you are a critical person thenthere is stuff here to be criticised. But if you are in the mood for anundemanding comedy with some enjoyable action sequences, then there isa lot here to enjoy.

ericzillazillo (16 May 2012)

Can't believe I paid to see this, and Rowan Atkinson is old.

Johnny English 1 was awesome. It was logical. Everything seemed genuineand completely coincidental. I waited for Johnny English 2. Many of uswaited for Johnny English 2. But the Johnny English sequel that Iwanted to see never came. Instead, what we got was a over repetitive, dry and basically non entertaining film. One of the things thatbothered me most was the dick-strengthening exercise. I don't mean thatI hate the scene, in fact I laughed at those scenes just as much asanyone else. Just that it is disturbing how once those MPAA jackassessee Rowan Atkinson, they instantly loosen their guard and give the filma mere rating of PG. What ever the film portrayed was much more vulgarthan PG. For example, the scene where Mr. English pets a "good pussy".I think that it would be hilarious and extremely vulgar for someone tojust take that tiny excerpt and post it on he internet. Rowan Atkinsontalking about pussy. Hilarious. Anyway, another ridiculous thing in themovie was the "Hong Kong" bit. It was extremely strange for me to seethat Hong Kong has a casino, because believe it or not, the casinonearest to Hong Kong is in Macau. In Johnny English 1, they just stated"France", but in Johnny English 2, they didn't state "China" or stateseparate place-names for "Macau" and "hong Kong". Also, it wasunentertaining to see Johnny beat up the Chinese so easily. Anyone withfighting experience knows that there are counter-actions for thesesimple attacks like swinging a giant drumstick. Johnny English isimplying that Chinese kung fu is useless in hand-to-hand combat againstsimple punches. The old-lady killer joke was also extremely boring. After a while itjust gets old, and turns from funny to awkward. Many of the other jokeswere unoriginal at all, being cheap rip-offs from other spy-detectivecomedies like The Naked Gun, where you could clearly identify the mindcontrol joke. If all those democrats and liberals are so damn active, why don't they do something about the racial intolerance in the movietowards the Chinese? I mean, if "nigger" is racist towards blackpeople, then "chimp" is racist towards Asians. Another issue is thatJohnny English 2 just isn't the same as Johnny Englsh 1 anymore. Itdidn't have the atmosphere of the old movie, where Johnny actually madehilarious mistakes. All in All, Johnny English 2 sucks, unless you are10 years old.

ctyankee1 (15 May 2012)

Very funny, lots of action

Johnny English is a comedy/action picture. It starts with him intraining in some sort of karate camp somewhere in the mountains inanother country. He had worked as a secret agent and was supposed to protect the leaderof another country but the leader was killed and he was blamed for notdoing his job right. He gets called back to work. Johnny is clumsy, tripping, banging his head, using the wrong secret weapons at the wrongtime or in the wrong way. There is a 3 piece key that every spy is looking for. A member of hisgroup is a traitor but no one know who it is. Johnny is really stupidbut gets the job done, somewhat like Peter Seller as InspectorClouseau. He also has a young black partner who is a lot smarter themhim. The movie has lots of action, jumping from building, car chases, shooting with special weapons etc.I think it is a good family movie but for older kids. There is noswearing or sex just lots of laughs. I enjoyed it.

Johnny English Reborn (2011)

I can't remember if I liked the first instalment less, or if I was justin a good mood for this outing. Either way, this wasn't particularlybad and I certainly laughed at some of the silly slapstick humour.Johnny English has been out of action for 5 years. An ex-CIA agent thencomes forward and says he has information for the MI7 but will onlytalk to English. English is soon back on the case, and messing up justabout everything. That's not entirely fair, a lot of the time he doesdo good. Such as a rather amusing foot chase which spoofs the parkourof Casino Royale, with English taking his time to walk the streets ofHong Kong. The jokes have all been done before, and are mostly sightbased. For example, English continuously misconstrues what certaingadgets are for and ends up using them in the wrong way. As I find witha lot of comedies these days, they often milk a joke. How many times dowe need to see Atkinson attacking elderly women thinking it's someoneelse? The supporting cast are all fine, but hardly any of them bringany comedic talents. It's all Atkinson's show. I really do think thespy spoof genre has run its course, especially when Spy filmsthemselves have stepped away from their usual formulaic nonsense andhave given us strong efforts including Casino Royale, Tinker TailorSoldier Spy, and the Bourne films.

kosie42 (13 May 2012)

very British spoof

For a highly anticipated sequel to the original, i was definitely notdisappointed. this film build on the original quality of a quiteBritish parody on the James Bond franchise continue here with valor.the introduction take an interesting perspective with our unlike heroin a milieu not very British, hence the call back into action. thisinventive intro make for laugh out loud humor. Atkinson acquit himselfvery well in a role destined for him to break away the Mr Bean-mania.Subtle James Bond references and in-jokes are at time hilarious. Ittake something to parody the British class system in one hilariousscene. The so-called cleverness of the spy genre is well used invarious funny scenes.although the story is at least well drawn, the support cast areinteresting. especially Daniel Kaluuya as Agent Tucker is an excellentparody on the colonialism of yesteryear. He does well in his role asdoes the excellent Gillian Anderson with a real British Accent togetherwith a typical dry British humor is stand-out. The Villains are notdeveloped enough. This one is well worth the wait and the watch. Enjoyit with anyone who like to laugh. Well done Rowan.in one or 2 scene MrBean can be recalled as well, however Atkinson does a good job of notstereo typing his role. another Sequel will be welcome if the subtlejokes keep coming. MI7 might just replace MI6!!
