His name is Bean, James Bean

It took them quite some while to get the second movie going. But it'sfinally (?) here for everyone to enjoy. It is as another reviewerstated mindless fun, though you couldn't seriously expect anythingelse. I had some laugh out loud moments during the movie, even whenthere was quite a lot of silly going on.There are certain "theme alerts" (things getting kind of repeated) thatyou might like or sort of hate. But Rowan Atkinson (better known forhis Mr. Bean role) is quite the agile and fun actor and pulls itthrough. You also have some nice "guest stars" and some nice gadgets(as you would expect from a secret service agent). Enjoyable enough, ifyou don't have any expectations of it being more than just a sillycomedy

A spy-comedy movie

After a mission in Mozambique went wrong, spy Johnny English (RowanAtkinson) was send to Tibet to learn discipline and martial arts. Butwhen plans for assassination of Chinese Premiere are uncovered, Johnnyis the only agent for the job. He has to find a last member of'Vortex', an organization that's behind murder plot. time is runningout, and people involved are not to be trust. This very simple comedyis a spoof of a James Bond movies. It is addressed to rather youngpublic. The movie is loaded with bad jokes and you have to try hard tolaugh. It's a shame, because such a great, funny and witty like RowanAtkinson, shouldn't be drained of these qualities. Unfortunately inJohnny English Reborn he is. Not a bad movie, rather boring.

More of the same

Was the world really calling out for another Johnny English film? Ithas been eight years since the first movie, which was not good in thefirst place, based on a character who started life in credit ads andhas a limited market outside the UK. Still, Universal Studios andWorking Title Pictures thought it was worth a go.Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) was MI7's top agent, but he has beenliving in disgrace, conducting martial arts training in a Tibetanmonastery for the past five years. MI7 calls him back into action afteran ex-CIA agent, Fisher (Richard Schiff) says he has information abouta plot to assassinate the Chinese Premier and English is the onlyperson he will talk to. Fisher tells English that a secret organisationcalled Vortex is responsible and plans to use a weapon that needs threekeys. Fisher also tells English that Vortex was responsible for hisfailure in Mozambique. Soon, English is plunged into a deadly missionand has to bungle his way through.Johnny English Reborn is the type of sequel where you do not need tosee the original movie and yet it still feels like a rehash at somepoints. English has a partner, Tucker (David Kaluuya), who despitebeing the junior partner has more intelligence and common sense and isignored by his superior, very much like Ben Miller's character in thefirst movie. We get another smart and competent romantic interest inthe form of Rosamund Pike, a woman who is 24 years Atkinson's junior(gross). There is also an over-the-top car chase like in the firstmovie, but this time with the roles reversed. For that matter, thereare set-ups for the comedy of embarrassment where English has to hidewhat he has done, as well as misunderstandings and general stupidity.Hardly fresh or original. For the most part, the film is very much a parody of the James Bondfranchise. The speech by Pegasus (Gillian Anderson) that MI7 haschanged and is no longer the misogynistic organisation it once wasechoes the speech by M in Goldeneye. Similarly, the scene in Goldeneyein which Bond tours the weapons lab (a scene that was originally meantto be comic in the first place) is parodied, as Johnny English enters asimilar facility and ends up accidentally firing weapons. And the bigset piece, which is also the best parody, is the parkour chase in HongKong where the filmmakers do at least try and be inventive and end thescene with a boat chase like in Quantum of Solace. But much of theseparodies are outdated. The Bond series and whole spy action genre haschanged to be darker and grittier. Most of the humour is physical. Fine for kids, but adults wants more.Atkinson is a man who is in his mid 50s and he is starting to get tooold for this type of comedy. He is also capable of much moreintelligent humour. Some of the jokes offer a few minor chuckles, butoverall the director did not know when to stop and killed the jokes. Some of the other punch lines are just predictable while some do notmake much sense, like the attempted poke at product placement and thegag that MI7 is supported by Toshiba and has a slogan "spying for you."It was obvious who the villain was going to be early in the movie, butit does not explain why The Vortex wants to kill the Chinese premier, whether it was for business contracts, money, a military coup, or tocause tensions between China and the West. Any of these ideas wouldhave done the job.A better aspect is that Johnny English can be competent, such as whenhe is chasing the Chinese theft in Hong Kong, but for the most part heis still an idiot who cannot put two and two together. Moments likewhen English attacks an old woman do offer a guilty chuckle and the oldChinese assassin (Pik-Sen Lim) who used a vacuum cleaner and a golfclub as a gun are inventive.Overall, if you are a fan of the first Johnny English movie or under 11years old, you may enjoy Johnny English Reborn. If you are anybodyelse, you are hardly likely to be won over.

Johnny Stillborn

I've read better scripts the morning after I ate alphabet soup. Tired &predictable jokes, neglected cast members, and missed opportunities forbig laughs made me wonder how this movie was ever made. There wasn'tmuch to it and the moments that so desperately tried to be funny turnedout to be painful to watch. In the opening segment of this movie we areable to see exactly the level of comedy this movie will reach. Whilerecovering from a botched assignment that has left him banished fromMI7, English trains high in the Himalayas at a Buddhist temple.Performing the tired martial arts and training shtick, I was leftwondering if I had made an error in buying a ticket. And indeed I had.

Johnny English Gets Reborn

I love British humor, especially when it comes from Benny Hill or DaveAllen. British humor is more subdued and simple, not like Americanhumor, which is more in your face and has become more sophomoric inrecent years because of the direction of people like Tom Shadyac andthe Farrelly Brothers. You won't get volumes of gay and bathroom humorfrom England because their humor goes back to before Hollywood wasmaking movies. Their country gave us Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurelamong others. The only drawback to the Johnny English movies is theirunrelenting capacity for utterly embarrassing the character in wildlyelaborate situations. Rowan Atkinson is a slapstick genius. He can bendhis body and contort his face into wildly exaggerated expressions ofhis emotions, but he is most funny when he tries to act suave and elitebecause deep down he knows he really isn't. He's putting on a face whendeep down he really wants to be a clown. The movie picks up severalyears after his last appearance. Ben Miller as the affable Bough andthe beautiful Natalia Imbruglia as Interpol agent Lorna Campbell aresadly unavailable, but their spirits are filled in by Rosamund Pike asagent Kate Summer and Daniel Kaluuya as the sidekick Colin Tucker.Following a monster blunder that sees him stripped of his knighthood,English has retreated into hiding in Tibet, but an informant arisesthat can spill news on what really happened on that disastrous missionand soon Johnny is embroiled in a new adventure that may (or may not)restore his honor. Along the way, MI7 has been taken over by the publicsector and run as a conglomerate under a larger company. GillianAnderson plays his new superior Pegasus, without the signature red hairwe knew her best as part of the "X-Files." Johnny is a better strongeragent now, but he still screws up royally when his ego inflates, and hefeels most sure of himself. That's where the best humor works, but whenJohnny embarrasses himself, we feel his pain as well as a conviction towant to slap him around a bit, tell him what he's doing wrong and thentry and give him a pat to the back. Overall, the movie is equal bits ofaction and comedy, but it is definitely enjoyable and fun to watch evenwith all the crotch jokes.

I am really disappointed by watching movie Johnny English Reborn (2011)

I am really disappointed by watching movie Johnny English Reborn (2011)because before I watched the movie I thought it would be a comedy (As aadventure it may be reasonable). With comparing Johnny English (2003)this is nothing. That movie was a one of my favorite comedy movies andalso all the Rowan Atkinson's movies except Johnny English Reborn.Acting of Rowan Atkinson is naturally good. But the story is notimpressed. In this movie Johnny English become someone like James Bond. There was no scene which could made me laugh. All the incidents theyhave used to make humor are really primary things like falling. Fromthe beginning of the movie I felt asleep. If you are a fan of RowanAtkinson and hope to watch good comedy movie it will not accomplishyour expectations.

kjazzw1 (12 June 2013)

Terrible sequel.

(Spoilers are only for certain scenes, not for any important marks inthe film.)Whether it's that I was a lot younger and therefore found the first onea lot more funny during first viewing or that it genuinely was awful, Ihope my review comes clear to those who need a first hand view on thesequel to Mr English's appearance. In comparison to the first film, I consider none of this to be a'masterpiece', not even the slightest.. As the film becomes less andless funny throughout, it also becomes more and more predictable inwhat's going to happen; "Take a seat, Johnny.. but make sure you don'tsit on that exercise ball that is coincidentally in shot of the cameraand you bounced up and down so the audience DEFINITELY acknowledge itspresence!", or how about the fighting scene with the monk? When themonk's psyching himself up, he turns around for a few seconds longerthan necessary, and what do you know? Johnny English has gone missing!Or even the scene in the casino, his assistant says "the Chinese manwith the spectacles", now if it wasn't bad enough that this descriptionis vague enough for anyone to see a number of people matching thisdescription, guess what? Johnny mistakes one man with another WHILSTsat between them! I felt like I was watching a cartoon. Now I don't aimto ruin these scenes for anyone, but if they weren't obvious that theywere going to happen before they did, then call me psychic. I foundmyself pulling a face to say "well, this is stupid." as well as raisingmy hand to suggest "did nobody but me really see that was coming?", butthe number of people in the cinema compared to seats free only feltlike a metaphor for the rating I'd give for the film at this point (4out of 23945873459843).Okay, it has it's funny points; the scene that made me laugh most wassomewhere near the beginning (about 10 minutes in if I rememberrightly) where he mistook some fruit sweets for a voice-changer(typical English) and the 'Susan' scene, I'll admit, that made mesmile. Yes, smile. Not roaring with laughter; a smile. It seems to methat this film only had one intention when it was being written andthat was 'Let's see how stupid we can get this', this was going roundand round in my head during the full film and it hit me towards the endthat Johnny English could've been played by nothing more than a clownhimself. The humour was limited (and even then, barely funny), thestoryline I wasn't really keen on and didn't match the first film atall (not even any references - that I'm aware of; I'm pretty sure hehad his assistant 'Boff', got a girl and became king or something? Noneof these are mentioned at all).To sum up, this film was definitely not worth seeing. I would rather Ihadn't seen it, scratch that, I'd rather they hadn't made it and leftthe first film as it ended, then I wouldn't be so disappointed about'Johnny English' as a whole.

Predictable, Boring, Unfunny - and Painful,

Not quite sure why I bothered with this one - Rowan Atkinson (whosecameo in the Olympics opening ceremony I adored) is just anembarrassment, not only to himself, but also to James Bond as afranchise and to Britain generally.I might have been having an off-day but a good comedy should havelifted that, not driven it to deeper depths of despair. The aims - and nearly always resulting in misses - at every Bondstereotype, where I could almost have made a list from which was takenfrom which film are simply feeble and mixing in pseudo psycho nonsenseabout vortexes and other mumbo-jumbo just muddied it further.Atkinson no longer has the physical dexterity to pull off the slapstickand his usual forte, vocal logistics are never fully realised, at leastnot in a clever way, which we all know he can do.I'm not going to say avoid and all that, because that's a presumptionthat your tastes are the same as mine and they most probably aren't. Itseems to be a popular movie and I'm glad that many enjoyed it. However, mild toothache is rather more appealing, for me, though the very finalscene did raise half a smile, though...

Someone please help me here.....

OK, can someone please help me understand why this film is getting 10out of 10's? Im sorry, but I was a big fan of the first Johhny English.Without being too cynical, I thought it was good fun and gave you a fewlaughs, but I wasn't too sure whether there would be a sequel or not.Surprise surprise there wasn't and that was fine, they left it and itstill stands well a few years on. However when Johhny English wasannounced this year, one thing popped into my mind ' oh great,Hollywood are cashing in again' just like on all the other sequels andremakes they've done year's after the originals. Now don't get me wrongthere are some really good things about this movie. Firstly, some ofthe humour is very good: the meeting scene with the chair, the firstmeeting with the head of the spy organisation, some of the party sceneswith the mistaken old lady and the fight scene with the man who usesloads of stunts to run from Johhny, whereas Rowan Atkinson justcasually chases him using amusing stunts. However, even these scenes aren't as funny as they should be. The chasescene near the beginning just isn't as good as it should be, it seemsto lack atmosphere and gets very tedious. Now let's get to some of thethings that are bad about this movie. The plot is just....ridiculous attimes. Brain control, OK fair enough it's been done but it's original, but hte fact that Johhny English can resist it at the end....one of thestrongest mind control drugs in existence according to the movie and hecan just go against it...OK right. The spontaneous romance with theblonde, which goes nowhere and is just so pointless. No indication isgiven towards it until Johhny runs to her flat after he is beingpursued by the MI6. Some of the acting is very flat too. Agent tucker,is funny in parts, but he lacks charisma and doesn't seem to have muchof a funny side character to accomplice Johhny. Not like Bough whocombined well with Johhny in the first movie....and talking of Bough,he's listed in the cast, but I don't recall him in the movie. Unless hehad a cameo which I missed.Overall, this film is very flat and dull. Granted the humour is good atpoints, and some of the special effects are fun, but more often thannot you're given boring dialogue, ridiculous story with many plot holesand flat acting that is uninspired and just not humorous. I think a4/10 is well deserved for a film which I was looking forward to, butleft me disappointed.

A really bad movie

I'm amazed. TRULY amazed how high this movie is scoring. It starts okay, a few laughs here and there the first 5 minutes, butthe jokes get really old and predictable really fast. It's almost as ifthe plot was written down on one A4 sheet, handed to Rowan and thentell him "Here, try and make this funny for us" And to give him some credit, he does an okay job, I smiled a lotthinking of how that scene reminded of Mr. Bean and how much funnierthat would have been.Don't watch it in the theater! Wait until some unsuspecting friendaccidentally rents it and you have absolutely nothing else to do exceptto watch that movie and wonder how and why this got made.I'll give it a 5 for a few laughs, but I laugh more at 30s clips onyoutube.

Annoying and Unfunny

Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) is retired in Tibet and in disgrace inMI- 7 after a washed up mission in Mozambique. Out of the blue, he issummoned by the MI-7 to stop the Vortex, an agency of skilled assassinsthat are planning to kill the Chinese premier Xiang Ping. JohnnyEnglish is back in action with the support of the rookie Agent Tucker(Daniel Kaluuya). But he is betrayed by someone that he would neverexpect. The first "Johnny English" is a very funny parody of 007 movies. I hadgreat expectations with "Johnny English Reborn", but unfortunately itis an annoying and unfunny. The character performed by Rowan Atkinsonis too stupid and his excessive imbecilities are irritating. The writerhas exaggerated in his parody and the result is terrible. My vote isfour.Title (Brazil): "O Retorno de Johnny English" ("The Return of JohnnyEnglish")

Mega-Maverick99 (08 June 2013)

Only gets good in the last half an hour of the movie

I literally just finished watching this movie with my dad and brother, came out rather disappointed. Before I start telling you why I was disappointed I just want to saythat I am huge Rowan Atkinson fan. I also want to say that I reallyliked the first Johnny English movie. I thought it was a great JamesBond/Mission Impossible parody. ..on to why I am disappointed with this movie. Instead of writing it ina paragraph I will bullet point it. •Very predictable- You know a movie is not great when you can figureout the plot in the first 10 minutes. Nothing surprised me or kept mehaving seconds thoughts.•Cheap Humour- There's way too much cheap humour in this movie. I mean. When are people going to learn that getting kicked in the balls is notfunny? The worst part was at the start of the movie where JohnnyEnglish has to drag some rocks with a certain body part I'm not goingto name. It was cringe worthy and sick•The Sidekick- I felt he served no purpose in the movie whatsoever, Hewas just in the way and didn't do anything. Johnny English done all thework.•Nothing original- there was few funny scenes but overall- Every jokein this movie has been used a billion times•Acting- Apart from Rowan Atkinson of course, everyone in this moviewas terrible. Even Atkinson performance couldn't save this movie. •Really boring in the middle- There's one part of the movie where Iactually fell asleep at how boring it was. When I woke up I lookedaround the audience, Everybody was fidgeting, looking around andgenerally looked bored out of their skulls. ...luckily this movie gets funny when Johnny English and his sidekickgo to the snowy mountains.. It went from a 2/10 to a 5/10 in the lasthalf an hour.Unless you got little kids with you, do not see this movie. It's notworth your hard earned money. Not even worth it for Atkinson. Which isa real shame because I really like that man. Thanks.

a movie that shouldn't have been made

if one does not have a movie, one should not make (or even try)one.the movie failed all over. the comedy was actually laughable, meaningthat every joke was unbelievably common, cut and pasted from the book ofjokes seen 1000 times.almost no use of the talented actor and his knowntalent for good silent jokes. no genuine content, the plot was clearbefore the first half of the film, surprises were not in order exceptthe vast dullness i did not expect from a film that muchadvertised(yes,i should have known better).directing was nowhere, every member of the cast made a really evenperformance with the rest of this miserable film. even things likemusic and photography let down.all in all,the only thing that keeps it from total 0 is the known actorand character. smiling might be in order, even more so if whilewatching, you start realising how little thought was made in everyscene. do not approach

One great comedy!

Okay, I just saw Johnny English Reborn. It was excellent as a comedy. It had lots of funny moments.I'll be clear: it's not the best movie I've ever seen, but, as Ialready said, it was excellent as a comedy. It is even better than thefirst Johnny English film, however, I'm a bit disappointed that theydidn't include Bough from the first film.Rowan Atkinson's performance was, of course, brilliant. All the otheractors also acted great, and I have nothing against this funny, greatcomedy.I highly recommend this movie because it is obviously worth seeing!

(07 June 2013)

So Disappointed!!

I actually fell asleep during parts of this movie. I loved RowanAtkinson in his "Mr. Bean" episodes. I also enjoyed the first "JohnnyEnglish" movie. That one was entertaining, funny & enjoyable. It was allI had hoped for while this one was a big dud & really mindless.Asidefrom a few funny moments,it was boring, predictable,& a real sleeper. Many of the ideas were copied from "James Bond OO7",& other movies. There was no originality or wit. I thought Gillian Anderson wasterrible as a VP in the British Intelligence. She was unfunny, stilted,&lacking in any emotion.Save your money & wait for it on DVD or TV. You won't be sorry! It istime for Atkinson to retire & enjoy the fruits of his other successes!I was extremely disappointed after seeing this film.At least we saw iton a reduced Tuesday.

ted00043 (07 June 2013)

Were you expecting a masterpiece?

I certainly wasn't expecting a masterpiece. what I was expecting wasdumb humoured spy comedy, If you look at it that way then you willenjoy this movie if you have a similar sense of humour to me.Once reading some of the reviews that criticised this I felt I have tosay "were you expecting a masterpiece?" I mean this is the sort ofmovie that isn't by any means of the imagination a cinematicmasterpiece (unless there is a little kid watching) but if you look atit for what it is then you might actually enjoy this.I think that like the Austin Powers films this one attacks a wholeseries of clichés used in action films (in this movie the only chasescene comes to mind). This movie is one of those few sequels that are better than theoriginal and this movie does have the same sort of humour, if you wantto see a movie with different humour then you're not doing very well bylooking at the movies sequel. When watching, don't expect something film snobs will enjoycomedy-wise, just expect dumb humour.I watched the trailer presented on IMDb, the trailer here is AWFUL!just watch the Australian trailer just to show what it's Actually like

Thrilling movie with a lot funny scenes

The first 10 minutes aren't as funny as the scenes could have been, buti must say that the producers really managed to combine serious themessuch as spying and the death of people with very funny thing. In myopinion, the funniest scenes are those with the old Asian killer indifferent situations. What didn't like was that from a very earlymoment of time in the movie, you could say who the third member ofVortex was. but that also has a good side: it shows Johnnys(RowanAtkinson)stupidity. It was crystal clear that there were a lot ofsimilarities with some James Bond movies, such as Thunderball. Therewere also some scenes which were just hilarious, such as he scene withthe chair.

arty_toaster (04 June 2013)

Absolutely hilarious!

This being a compromise film chosen after Contagion wasn't showing,I've got to say it was a very easy compromise to make once the filmbegan. Despite some earlier reviews claiming there were only a few LOLmoments, it was in fact quite the opposite, I was crying with laughterevery 3 minutes and since my laughter is the continuous type I'm glad Iwent to the late night showing! Very family suited or just a fun filmfor all age ranges (0-100):') I was slightly confused on the Toshibathing, but that is all I have to complain about. If you're depressed,go watch it. Worked for me :D (ps, there are some horror elements (Imean the hoover lady, gave me nightmares!)

Zdislav_Dorklehoven (01 June 2013)

Tried to be what Dumb and Dumber was but falls very short.

Sadly, this movie is just far to stupid to be funny. I really don't seeanything funny about this whatsoever. Watching some poor slob over andover and over again is not funny, in my opinion. This "dumbing down" is exactly the road our species is on. We areheaded to that same predicament, as in the movie, unless we make someserious changes. Not funny, however, very sad, indeed. Top three comedies of all time inno particular order then are BLAZING SADDLES, BORAT AND IDIOCRACY.They're like stinking, toilet filthy triplets, really!8/10

Boba_Fett1138 (31 May 2013)

Can't believe I was once very excited about a "Johnny English" sequel.

Right now, I'm almost too ashamed to admit it but I was always veryinterested in seeing another "Johnn English" movie. I was even quitehappy to learn that a (late) sequel was in the works, at the time. It'snot like I was an huge fan of the first "Johnn English" movie, on thecontrary quite really but I saw a lot of potential in it, with itsconcept and main character and was always hopeful that a sequel woulddo a far better job with all of it. However after this movie, I couldhope for it that this was the last one, out of a short lived and failedseries.I even have to say that this movie was way worse than its predecessor. The movie tried to be funny but to me, it just wasn't. You could callmost of the humor in this movie slapstick like but it's mostly somevery immature and far too simplistic stuff. It might had made me laugha couple of times but really, that doesn't mean that this is a good orfun comedy to watch as well. But I don't even think I can say that the humor, or the lack of it, isthe biggest problem of this movie. I had far more problems with itsstory. It just never really made any sense to me and too often Iabsolutely had no idea what was going on. I had no idea why JohnnyEnglish was being set on this particular case and I also had no ideawhat the case was all about in the first place. Or perhaps I shouldrather say that I simply couldn't have cared any less about it andperhaps that also was part of the reason why I too often had absolutelyno idea what was going on with any its story. It besides is all being some very formulaic and predictable stuff. Ifyou have seen any other spy comedy before, you know exactly what isgoing to happen in this movie and with its story. The story might beconfusing but its developments and 'twists' really aren't anythingclever or surprising. And while the first movie at least still had some fun James bond spoofelements in it, this movie mostly tries to be its own thing. It stillhas some hints of a James Bond spoof in it but this really didn'tseemed to be the film-makers its main aim and goal. And this is ashame, since the movie itself has far too little original and cleverideas of its own in it.Most people, myself included, are very well aware of the great stuffRowan Atkinson is capable off but somehow it never really seems to workout in movies. But I really don't think you could blame Atkinson forany of this. He simply had never been given the right movie material towork with. Some more capable comedy writers could had really launchedAtkinson's movie career to greater heights, years ago already but itall seems too little, too late by now. Atkinson is getting close to his60's and it is unlikely that his movie career is ever going to takeoff. And all of the other actors are pretty much wasted in this movie aswell. I had no idea what Gillian Anderson was doing in here and theyalso did absolutely nothing with Rosamund Pike in this. The movie isbeing filled with some terribly underwritten and poorly handledcharacters. No, not just a movie that was disappointing but this simply was a moviethat was bad!4/10 http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
