Decent Sequel to the 2009 Film

Justice for Natalee Holloway (2011)** 1/2 (out of 4) Lifetime Movie is a sequel to their 2009 film NATALEE HOLLOWAY andpicks up in 2010 on the five-year anniversary of her death. BethHolloway (Tracy Pollan) is still trying to find out what happened toher daughter when the already strange case takes another turn whenJoran Van Der Sloot (Stephen Amell) is arrested for murdering anothergirl. If you've followed this case like I have then there's not goingto be any new twists or turns in this film but then again that waspretty much true for the first one. I was a little surprised to see howwell-made this thing was and there's no question that it's a bettermovie than the 2009 one but at the same time there are a few too manyflaws to really call this a good picture. The quality stuff includesthe fact that director Stephen Kay plays a lot of the action as acrime-drama and he manages to build up some nice tension along the way. There's one sequence where the Alabama FBI are trying to get Joran onextortion charges and we get to see the sting done and the directorreally builds up some nice tension here as we flash back and forthbetween what's going on in the room as well as getting to see Beth'sreaction to everything. Another good thing the film has going for it isthat it appears Pollan is really into her role and I'd say herperformance here is better than the first time around. It really doesseem like she's been haunted by the disappearance of the daughter and Ithink Pollan gets this across without any problems. I was alsoimpressed with Amell who does a nice job once the film really centersin on him and his character begins to crack. At just around 90-minutes,the movie has a very good pace to it and the thing never gets boringand I'm sure if you're not familiar with the case then the movie willcertainly keep you drawn into the events. As I said, there are severalproblems that keeps this from being a good movie and one is that thescreenplay, at times, goes off into this over-dramatic stuff where itseems like Beth is just giving speeches hoping that someone whonominates the Emmy's will take notice. There were a few too many timeswhere the film goes off on this speeches and another problem are someof the liberties taken with the story. I don't mind things beingchanged because this is just what happens in bio-pics but at the sametime them speculating what happens inside the hotel room just didn'tsit right with me and it really didn't come off too good. Anotherproblem is the director's decision to use a lot of split-screens, whichjust comes off very distracting. With that said, JUSTICE FOR NATALEEHOLLOWAY is an improvement over the first film and while it tries to"end" everything it's well-known that these cases are on- going so I'msure more films will follow.

Compelling portrait of a mother on a crusade

I don't want to call this entertaining because its subject matter is sodismal but it kept me riveted throughout.I'd never seen Tracy Pollan in anything, and I know her primarily asMichael J. Fox's wife, but she's mesmerizing as a mother who nevergives up on finding out what happened to her daughter that night inbalmy Aruba. Her multi-faceted performance is superb. The actor who plays Joran van der Sloot is appropriately slimy as aspoiled gambling addict playing a cat-and-mouse game with tortured, obsessed Beth Twitty, who only wants to bring her daughter home. Allthe slime bag wants is cash and it's heartbreaking to witness theirencounters. This film shows all the sordid twists in this tale with surprisinglyinteresting segments featuring Joran's parents and survivors of poorStephany, Joran's final victim. (The Peruvian girl's death seemed assenseless as Natalee's and what makes Joran tick remains a mystery inthis film.) Sometimes that's the way life is. This is an excellent production.
