Haven't read the book... but if it's half as good as the movie then it's well worth the read.

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (Amazon Instant Video) Excellent film, and I'm usually skeptical of any animation that isn't Pixar. Wish I would have seen this one in 3D at the theater when it came out.

Refference quality 3D.

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga'hoole (Two-Disc Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray Combo) (Blu-ray) I dont have "Avatar" Blu-ray(3D) so I cant compare just yet but I do have every other 3D Blu-Ray movie available and this movie has the undisputed best 3D to this day! No doubt about it. The part where the owls meet the porcupine is some of the best 3D I have ever seen. The porcupines nose seemed to literally poke out of my tv. Finally a 3D movie that's interesting to watch and has top notch 3D to boot. Finally.

Mixed feelings

I watched this last night based on all the reviews and...The animation was gorgeous. The script, pacing, music, acting was all done well.It was an overall excellent movie. From a childs perspective I would give the movie four stars, which I did. This movie is meant for kids, not grumpy old adults like me who have seen one too many Pixar movies. Now, from my grumpy old man perspective I would give the film two stars. The dialog at times was eye roll inducing. The characters, both good and bad are simply bad cardboard cutouts of every other good or bad guy you've ever seen on film before. The songs were a little too Disney-esque in certain parts for me and overall the film just seemed to never end.I'd recommend this movie for kids but not for jaded adults like me.It's good but hardly groundbreaking.

Beautiful! But the story falls short of the books.

This is one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen. Theanimation is flawless. The accompanying music is beautiful.Unfortunately the story and character development fall far short of thebooks. I have read all of the books. As an adult, I enjoy the fantasygenre. Even though the books were labeled as children's books, when Iheard about the movie and first saw the artwork for the owls(beautiful), I became intrigued with learning what all the fuss wasabout. The books are definitely not for very young children. Overall, the story line in the books is wonderful. Kathryn Lasky does an amazingjob of creating this world with intelligent owls, wolves, snakes, polarbears and other creatures. I learned to care very much about thesecharacters. The story is way too violent (for young children) and manyyoung owls lose their parents or become separated from their familiesand are forced into abusive situations. The good owls (The Guardians ofGa'Hoole) are spectacular in the books, their whole society andhierarchy are clearly explained and their relationships to each otherrun deep. I did not experience that in the movie. I think the movie was too short(90 minutes) and did not allow enough time for each character to befully developed. I did not come away from the movie feeling that Icared for these characters and what happened to them. The editing wasalso kind of herky-jerky, quickly jumping from scene to scene. Themovie was adapted from the first three books so I understand the needto change the story. I feel because the movie was so short, that thestory in the movie was not explained very well. The actors doing thevoices did an excellent job with what they had to work with. I had high hopes for this movie. Unfortunately I left the theaterdisappointed. Due to the violence (even though it is animated) themovie shouldn't be marketed to young children either. Because I love the books, I would definitely see a sequel if one ismade. I know it will be as beautiful as this one is. Hopefully thestory will be told in a better way. With all due respect, I think the filmmakers should take screenplaylessons from the makers of Toy Story 3 and How To Train Your Dragon (Ilove this movie!). Both of these movies touched me and entertained meevery way a movie should.

You won't give a hoot

It's all down hill after the Owl dives through the Warner BrothersLogo. Some scenes look good but what this film does is make the peopleat Disney look great.A major problem is Owls are nocturnal so everything seems to take placeat night. It's dark stuff in the dark. There's an attempt to make itformula with the worm (or snake) side kick and an attempt to throw in asong but unlike the Owls it doesn't fly.The voices aren't special. The animation while sometimes striking ismostly serviceable. It's a tad too intense and scary for kids withabductions, and brothers killing brothers. There's a good Owl knock knock joke but the little humor and heart islost in the weird owl mess. It takes too long to get to the epic goodover evil battle that is also too rough for children. By then whooocares.

Max_cinefilo89 (14 May 2012)

You know, for kids (?)...

Zack Snyder directing a fantasy film aimed at a younger audience. Forsome reason, that concept doesn't feel entirely right. After all, we'retalking about the man whose first three features have become primeexamples of good R-rated action, be it a gory Romero redux (Dawn of theDead), a campy comic-book-inspired epic (300) or a respectable take onAlan Moore's masterpiece (Watchmen). Not exactly the kind of backcatalogue that usually gets you a gig based on a series of books that, unsurprisingly, could provide material for a lucrative franchise ifeverything goes well. Then again, Snyder has shown to be a prettyfearless filmmaker (again, he made Watchmen, something even TerryGilliam viewed as an impossible project), and with Legend of theGuardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole he gets to explore plenty of newterritory: not only is this a PG-rated film, it's also animated and in3D.Set in a remote land inhabited by talking owls, the movie isessentially a coming-of-age story centered around Soren (Jim Sturgess),a youngster who has grown up hearing the stories of the Guardians wholive in the kingdom of Ga'Hoole and will come to the rescue if dangermanifests. This is exactly what happens, as a presumed dead adversaryreturns and threatens to destroy all "impure" owls. Having beenseparated from his parents, Soren, paired with a group of unlikelyallies (voiced by David Wenham and Richard Roxburgh, among others),must find the Guardians and stop the evil army, which also includes hisbrother Kludd (Ryan Kwanten)...Despite the child-friendly rating, Legend of the Guardians is a quiteunusual cartoon in that it tackles an unexpected subject alongside thefamiliar epic themes (avian racism? Cool idea) and has all itscharacters (minus one) speak with Australian accents (then again, mostof the cast members are Australian). And in the first half it lookslike it could work for grown-ups too, with a healthy balance betweenfunny banter and exciting action, with a few shocks along the way(characters get tortured and all). Shame that the third act is aconventional good vs. evil story that borders on preachy (you know, forthe younger viewers) and, predictably enough, sets up a sequel rathershamelessly. Granted, Snyder has yet to fail at the box office, but atleast other potential franchises (Lemony Snicket comes to mind) werecareful enough to have an adaptation that could work as a standalonestory, without any need for further installments (a wise move in thecase of Snicket, given there has been no sequel so far).On the bright side, the voice work is impeccable (but hey, what do youexpect with Helen Mirren and Geoffrey Rush in the cast), and despitethe lack of blood (and inventive kills, for that matter), it stillfeels a lot like a Snyder picture, with gorgeous visuals (including aBambi homage in the climax), stunningly executed action scenes and, ofcourse, slow-motion. Lots of it. The 3D is also used skillfully, although in some scenes the conversion signs are obvious, making for anunpleasant, jarring effect (still better than Clash of the Titans, though). So, barring a few narrative and technical missteps, Legend of theGuardians is proof of Snyder's versatility, showing that when the timecomes, he will be able to keep his rawer instincts in check for theSuperman reboot. In the meantime, however, there's no denying that hisreturn to the usual stuff with Sucker Punch looks a lot more promisingthan his first PG experience...

Simply amazing

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga'hoole (Two-Disc Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray Combo) (Blu-ray) This movie in 3d was simply beautiful. The clarity, the quality was amazing. Purchased for my granddaughters, they really enjoyed the story line. The 8 year old has seen it 3 times. Am so very glad I bought it.

Visual Perfection

I have to say that this by far the most beautiful movie ever. The music, and the visual effects blend together to create perfection. The owls seem to have feathers you can feel, the sky seems to go on forever. By far one of the best family movies made this year. If you get a chance to see this let your imagination fly. You will never forget the experience.

The Vidiot Reviews...

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'HooleBecause owls have razor-sharp talons, and an appetite for smallrodents, it's important to never approach one if you have a Fu Manchumoustache or a rattail haircut.Luckily, there are no humans with long, tapered locks hanging off oftheir head in this animated 3-D adventure.Raised on tales of the gallant Guardians of Ga'Hoole, a young barn owl,Soren (Jim Sturgess), and his new friends Gylfie (Emily Barclay),Grimble (Hugo Weaving), Twilight (Anthony LaPaglia) and Digger (DavidWenham) attempt to locate the winged-warriors to get them to helprescue Soren's brother Kludd (Ryan Kwanten) from a parliament ofpuritanical owls–hell- bent on genocide.Based on the book series, The Owls of Ga'Hoole is a slickly designedfeature with ample action, vibrant voice work and much darker tonesthan most modern animated features. And though the owls here don't get along, they do have a common enemyin eclipses. Could have been a total hoot - but failed

This movie does most of all two things. Puts you in awe for themagnificent animations, that filled the screen. Wonderfully and with alot of love for detail created Barn Owls, Northern Hawk, Elf,Burrowing, Snowy Owls do step on the scene of animation with a bang. The Artwork of the animators deserves a glowing review and easy 10 as agrade. However - the authors and screenplay writers don't come awaythat easy. Yes - it is a fantasy movie with talking Owls, Legends andHistory - I give you all that. But why for crying out loud go into suchextremes? A snake as a nanny for Owlets? C'mon. That was the first bigcrack, followed later by several others that were not even necessary,to make the story work. Neither was the snake... But magic stuff out ofOwl pellets? And Owls wearing armor AND having Owl-Blacksmiths forgingthem?? The story of Good vs. Evil would have worked easily without thatoverextension of the fantasy world. It might have not turned out soalienating if it were not for the ultra-realistic rendering of Owls. Agood old Disney Animation might have gotten away with it - but here itsimply felt wrong and misplaced. A little tweaking of the story and theapplication of some brain would have made this movie a Hallmark movie. But with ideas, that were purely inserted for effect and optics, thestory failed to shine. I'm truly torn between hitting the authors withtheir screenplay over the head and buying the animators a case ofchampagne, so I settle for a medium rating, while internally I give thestory a big fat Zero and the animation crew an equally fat 10.

Review for Owls of Ga'Hoole

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (Amazon Instant Video) I enjoyed this movie even though I haven't read the books. I think they combined several of the books into this movie, but the storyline was easy for me to follow. The storyline was kind of familiar and reminded me of Star Wars, but I still liked it. I also thought the owls looked extremely realistic.

GREAT MOVIE

Excellent animation and a good story

We have not read the books, but our entire family loved this movie. Theanimation is breathtaking. These owls look real, especially theirfeathers. The flying scenes are particularly impressive. There is agood story that keeps your attention and plenty of action and somehumor to keep the kids riveted to the screen. The voices were welldone, although I confess I was trying to figure out why all the owlshad British or Australian accents. There's nothing wrong with that, Ijust noticed it and found it interesting. Loyalty and friendship arestrong themes here, as is honor and honesty, but it's done in such away that you don't feel like you are being preached at. I noticed thatthe box office gross was less than the budget, so I'm hoping therentals and purchases bump the total up enough that they will make asequel.

yourwarmembrace (28 April 2012)

This movie is just a trainwreck

Okay.... first of all.... I've already seen the animated version ofLord of the Rings and I own the extended DVD box sets of the LOTRtrilogy. Peter Jackson did what no other person on this earth couldhave done and making those films was truly his calling. I go on aboutLOTR because I don't need to see it again! And I definitely don't needto see such majestic creatures put in to-the-death battles. But alas,it was all a tale... a story within a story. No, that does not make itokay because I just sat through this garbage!!! I would have muchrather seen a Disney type IMAX documentary on owls than to have satthrough this. Don't waste your time. Great animation but the storylacks.

3D Mastery

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga'hoole (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Of the available 3D titles I have seen this one is the most stunning. The convergence is off in a few areas but the 3D effect is fantastic. The story is fine if predictable but the enjoyment is more in the visual journey that the story telling. Anybody with a 3D setup will not be disappointed.

Beautiful & Brave

This movie was beautiful and very close to the books which made it all the better. If you have watched the commercials you can pretty much get the jest of the story. (No point in repeating it.) So to put it simply, the story was beautiful, visually stunning in so many places I can't even begin to speak of them. At points I actually got goosebumps which is saying something about the story. It was swift in pace and only had maybe one or two spots of rest, even though it was fast pace and maybe a little dark for younger children, it was worth every penny and worth seeing again in theaters. All in all I give it stellar thumbs up, very few movies leave such beautiful visuals (like Avatar), and so few provide a story about friendship, honor, and finding the truth in a dream.
