A comedy...or something like it

If it weren't for Angelina Jolie, I would've fell asleep through the wholedamn movie. Jolie delivers another spirited performance, and she is anextremely beautiful woman with a smile to die for. But the movie is justdull, dull, dull. First of all, if the director wanted to make this astraight drama that's fine. Just don't market it as a COMEDY! Ifsentimental schmaltz with few or no laughs is your definition of comedy, then you're in for a treat. The director is Stephen Herek, who alsodirected the dull, forgettable Eddie Murphy vehicle "Holy Man." Like thatmovie, "Life..." is horribly uneven, taking a serious turn way too early inthe film and never recovering. Despite extremely poor attempts, I'm prettysure Herek intended this to be a comedy. Herek just has no sense of timing! And may I add, there are certain scenes in the previews that weren't usedin the final cut--Why the hell do directors tease us like that?!!!!!! Forexample, there's supposed to be one scene where Jolie is on the set of a TVshow and a light from the ceiling falls down, inches away from killing her. But there are no scenes where her life seems threatened. Instead, the moviegets preachy and sentimental about the subject of carpe diem and developingthe all-too-predictable love affair between Jolie and Edward Burns. Likealways, they start out hating each other's guts and about 20 minutes throughthe flick, they're practically soulmates. The character arcs are so quickand stilted. I like Edward Burns, but he should definitely stick to independent film. Idon't usually say this about directors, but he should stick to starring inhis own movies. His writing is obviously much more creative than that ofHollywood screenwriters, who get paid 10 times as much as him. OK, he wasfairly good in "15 Minutes" and quite good in "Saving Private Ryan," but heshould try to steer clear of Hollywood.Every scene is so dull and downbeat. Herek tries to redeem himself withpretentious fast-motion shots, identical to those of Madonna's "Ray ofLight" video. If Jolie weren't the star, this film would be dead in thewater. And Tony Shalhoub deserves better as well. I'm not surprised to seehim in a corny flick, but he is an underrated comic actor and I loved him on"Wings." Jolie decided she would take a break from movies after done with "TombRaider." Why, oh why, did she change her mind and star in this ultimatelyforgettable pseduo romantic comedy? She should've saved the blonde hair fora much better movie. My score: 4 (out of 10)

I really liked this one!

A nice film.About interesting characters, that is well acted, and fairly wellwritten.I'm not going to tell you the story of the movie. But, there's a good chanceyou'll enjoy this film. This is not going to make the AFI Top 100, but are all those films that muchfun to watch anyway? The cast is thoroughly enjoyable as well.So rent the film, or buy it you won't be sorry.Oh by the way sorry to those few of you who aren't happy unless every filmlooks like Citizen Cane---you won't like it---save your money.

Awesome!!

I didn't know what to expect from this movie when I rented it. I'm definately buying a copy. I thought the movie had a great ending. I loved the movie very much. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a film with an original story.

Could have been so much better

This film appears to me as though it was first written as athriller/drama,but got mauled beyond recognition into yet another feel-good comedyromancewith a message, which is completely at odds with the acting and the lookofthe film! As an earlier review here points out, it looks like a drama andit's acted like a drama - would no studio make it unless it was rewrittenasa warm fuzzy? I only saw the second half of the movie and I thought it wasareasonably good drama, but with a cheesy romance subplot (which remindedmeof The Ring!!!!)... until it got to the 100% chick flick happy endingwhichmade me want to murder everyone involved. It felt like it had been tackedonto the end of a movie that had already finished - why not get rid of the"live life to the fullest" moral and end it at the "death" scene? Perhapsitcould be left to our imaginations as to what happens to the reporter intheend.

pointless or something like it

So I watched this film having read the odd review and thought hey I willgive it a try. What a shame really, no depth to any of the characters, infact not one person stood out in this film.*****POSSIBLE SPOILER*************************************************************So the point is that the prophet was right every time except in the caseoflife or death!! Well that was a relief then, if we had known that at thestart I wouldnt have bothered watching. The only part that made me laughout loud was the voice over at the end...and Jack did not say "only part of you will die" he said "you willdie"and to be perfectly honest if that is someones idea of living each daylikeits your last!!.......then god help us all...sounds like I really did not like this film. Truth be told I watched itinthe hope something slightly interesting wouldhappen........................alasit did'nt................."pointless or something like it".................

If I were going to die Thursday...

I wouldn't watch this movie.I gotta start off by saying that I'm still not sure if Jolie's character wasa brunette or a blonde naturally. All the "young Jolie" pictures show herblonde (I thought) but she's obviously not a natural blonde.Honestly, when I leave a movie that's supposed to make me re-evaluate mylife and what it means to live (like American Beauty did) and the only thingI can think about is the hair color of the star I think the movie failed.Sure, it wasn't too hard to watch and it worked out well as a Saturdayafternoon hang-out w/ the lady-friend flick, but w/ Jolie I was reallyhoping this movie would fulfill its promise and be the engaging, interesting, thought-provoking film that it could be. Instead we see verystrong similarities to American Beauty w/ a little "To Die For" thrown infor good measure and a helpin' heapin' of a John Cusack film (doesn't reallymatter which)What really bugs me about this film though is that I really thought the castwas great. They were so believable (well, except for Jolie's hair, whichreally is a character in its own right) and their performances were sostrong that as I look back on the film I really don't understand where itwent wrong...maybe it tried to hard at the end, maybe all the logic fellapart just to bring about the thrilling climax, maybe it felt too much likea parody of tv news to also be the love story/life lesson that it alsosought to be. Sure parodies can have morals and realistic love stories butthis one doesn't.I wouldn't avoid this film, but I wouldn't seek it outeither.

An OK Romantic Comedy Impacted By 9/11

It's not Angelina's best work but the movie is watchable with all the supporting characters portrayed by Tony Shalhoub, Edward Burns, Stockard Channing and even President Charles Logan(aka Gregory Itzin). The reason this movie originally got negative ratings and poor box office was because it was filmed in the summer of 2001 and was probably seen as a movie with a "September 10th" attitude. After 9/11, the country was in a surly and cynical mood about anything that reminded people of superficiality that existed before the attacks. At that time the movie came out, people were more in a mood for "killing all the bad guys" and "turning countries into glass parking lots" than romantic comedy. This movie would have been a box office success if 9/11 hadn't happened but the late Osama Bin Laden had other plans and altered everyone's lives.

memnova (17 May 2012)

Oh, so sad

It's so sad that Angelina Jolie would pick a movie like this--I know shewanted to do a comedy, but this really wasn't the one. While I appreciatedsome of the very sharp dialogue and Tony Shalhoub and Stockard Channing'sexcellent performances (as always), the movie was just overly sugary. Butit is rather amusing to see the so-called bad girl of Hollywood play thisvery put-together, high maintenance news correspondent. I'll put it thisway: if it's on cable and you have nothing to do (like I did when I sawit), then watch it. It's not too bad (but that blond hairis!).

Blueghost (07 May 2012)

A bad movie, or something like it ...

A comedy that touts as being sensitive, warm, and funny, but fails todeliver on its promises for a number of reasons: Firstly, it is not funny. Secondly, Angelina Jolie is not pretty, and has a hard time convincing thisviewer that she an attractive-humorous news reporter. She delivers a goodperformance, but her own artifically enhanced features (married to the worstblonde die job in movie history) add an unintentional unfunny humor to thefilm. The kind of humor that comments more on the actress and director thanthe script. The film, while technically good, is a contradiction in styles. It's billedas a comedy, but in fact is a drama with a half dozen or so mildly humorousmoments sprinkled in here and there. The film is shot like a drama, actedlike a drama, written like a drama, and lit like a drama. Despite the factthat it's supposed to be somekind of comedy. The script needed much reworking and tightening up before being comitted tofilm stock, because as it is now the movie meanders almost aimlessly asJolie's character goes from one odd (and I'll add very unfunny andnon-humorous) moment to the next. As someone else commented the charactersare very cliche. Given the story material and the direction the film wasgiven by Steven Herek I'm personally surprised the film came out as good asit did, and that's no compliment.Do yourself a favor, and avoid this movie.

FUNosophical Entertainment, pretty damn BRILLIANT.

First start, JOLIE plays a very "in your face"-gorgeous-looking TV personality (with the platinum blonde and obvious super [word] physical attributes - JOLIE's trademark). That alone might just an eye-candy factor. But then Ms Brilliant JOLIE didn't just deliver vanilla "eye-candiness". Her razor sharp remarks and sarcastic humor is what really brings the movie alive. One of my favourites is, "OH GOD, YOU ARE TRYING TO HAVE[word]WITH ME!" Who else DARE and QUALIFY for the Line??? (I love that clip so much that I replayed it again and again with lots of heart-felt giggles). The screenplay projects a sense of exploration into human existense's "meaningness". It really hits home for me but then I admit I might not have the courage like Lanie in the movie to run out of "it" and "reborn" again. Unless, of cause, a super goregous ED BURNS is waiting for me. Haha! :D BTW, ED BURNS really doen't look like acting at all. What a pleasure to see him flirting with Lanie! Super natural and fluid acting chops here for Mr. Burns. I think this film is simply generally-underated by many "superficial" film critics just because a what appears to be a "big blonde hair with big lips" character is present in the film. To be fair, this is to me more like "Space Odyessy 2001" than your standard "hollywood romantic comedy" production. JOLIE AND BURNS definiely know what they are doing when they signed on. Last but not least, to JOLIE: I genuinely like you as a human being. Self-acceptance includes the courage to accept one's own talents and good looks, too(I can proudly say I am working on it). Brilliant people tends to be a bit different and it's always very OKAY to live life with the theme of FUN, Adventure, Self-acceptance and a heart for others(only to those who deserve it though, be discerning on that one). If you like this review, vote for it and may be JOLIE will actually read this....CHEERS.

Not bad but less original that most *Minor Spoilers*

Predictability is common in even a great movie, so that isn't the problem. There are movies with similar premises, but it was a decent film. You'llhave a chuckle now and then and jack the homeless prophet always having ispredictions come true was somewhat interesting.I guess this is more forsomeone who likes a simple chick-flick or any person who goes ga ga overJolie. Its not the best, but there are many worse.Any movie is worth watching ifyou have the time, so if you come across this movie watch it just to watchit. You might just like it!

This is a great movie!

This is one of the best movie's I've seen in a while. The movie keeps yourattention, it is very interesting and intriguing. The storyline is great,it was very well acted. All of the actors did a wonderful job. When Ifirst saw previews for this movie, I had no intention of going and seeingit, but I did. When I walked into the movie theater, I truly didn't thinkIwould like it, but it is now one of my favorites! I would give this moviethe highest rating.

Cute movie, worth it to see angelina!

This romantic comedy stars Angelina Jolie (lanie), who is a local news reporter trying to work her way up the network latter. The movie also stars Edward Burns (pete), who is lanie's co-worker -camera man-. Everything in lanie's life is going great until she does an interview with a homeless man who claims to be a psychic, and he tells her she will die in a week. Now lanie questions the decisions she's made in her life, and tries to make peace with herself, and falls in love in the process. This wasn't one of the greatest movies of all time or anything, but it was funny and cute...and above all it stars angelina jolie! With a PG-13 rating it's pretty much for the whole family as well.

something to think about at least

Shore, the concept behind this movie is overplayed. Live each day asthoughit were your last. Follow your heart. Love wins in the end. Never trustabaseball player. And always always trust a homeless prophet.Despite, these routine story lines, there was enough enough fun feel goodmoments in the movie to keep it going. The Rolling Stones bit was greatandthe big interview at the end really gets you up off your seat. The best part of this movie is that it gives you something to think aboutatthe end. My girlfriend and I had a philosophical discussion about her joband her life afterwards. She's doing well economically as an investmentbanker, but her hours suck and she doesn't really get to live. Herpassionis in fashion and movies, so why doesn't she quit her job. In 20 years, will she look back at her 20s and ask what happened to her youth and toherlife. Is she living her life to the fullest or is she living a path thatshe had dreamt up years ago or even is she living a life her parents putoutfor her. Life can seem too short at times when you're much older, sofollowAngelina, find a homeless prophit, get drunk and rearrange your life forthebetter.

Interesting comedy/drama movie from several angles

I enjoyed this movie, thanks in large part to the fact that I saw it onFX channel, on their "DVD on TV" movie night, where those two hosts(can't remember their names...) give you supplementary facts and othercommentary about the movie during the commercial breaks. The story was actually fairly engrossing: Angelina Jolie's character(Lanie Kerrigan), who is a news reporter, is told by some strangestreet prophet, Jack (played by Tony Shaloub), that she will die in aweek. The story unfolds as she proceeds to live her rather hectic,self-absorbed life interspersed with romance, a somewhat strainedrelationship with her father and sister, and the ever-presentwonderment as to whether Jack the Prophet will be correct in hisprophecy that Lanie will in fact die in a week. In other words, themovie does manage to keep you on the hook right up to the very end.(The ending was a bit lame, but still had a good message if you care toadjust yourself to it.)Jolie's character, Lanie, is interesting, because if you watch themovie more than once, you will most likely start to be intrigued by herappearance: the platinum blonde hair, the puffy lips, the expressiveeyes, the makeup.... you might start to think she resembles MarilynMonroe, or, you may just write her off as a woman who actually looks abit like an attractive transvestite(!). But no matter, because whetheryou like Angelina Jolie or not, you can't help but be a bit intriguedby the appearance of her character, which is kind of "out there" forJolie. One potential problem, though, is that she is possibly TOO outthere, to the point where she may distract the viewer from seeing themessage of the movieTony Shaloub's character, Jack the Prophet, is very well portrayed byMr. Shaloub. He's lovably wacko, and plus he has some pretty funnylines in spite of his plight in life. I like the Ed Burns character,Pete, because he reflects reality, whereas Jolie's character is kind oftoo unreal, but still fun to watch.I liked the setting of the movie, Seattle, since I live in Seattle. Forthose of us who live in the rainy city, it's fun to see an interestingmovie that takes place in our environs. They also used actual newspeople from a local Seattle TV station, so it was kind of fun to seepeople whom I've been seeing on the local nightly news actually appearin a Hollywood movie. They changed their real names, though, which waskind of weird. There were a few things I didn't like about the movie, the main onebeing that Lanie, who works as a modern-day TV reporter, comes acrossto me as just way too much of a sex-pot, I mean just way outside therealm of reality. It gets to be jarring after awhile to see such a sexycreature being passed off as a news reporter when we all KNOW that nomodern local news station would put such a pouty, platinum-hairedblonde on the air (....or WOULD they??? as Conan O'Brien would say.)But mainly I liked the movie, and it was actually worth a repeatviewing, as it kind of grows on you, and ultimately makes you THINKabout your own life, your own values, your personal destiny, etc. BTW,there's a pretty good batch of songs that accompanied the movie too, though I don't believe there is an actual soundtrack available, so youwill probably have to hunt down each song individually. All in all an interesting movie, with a message worth pondering - ifyou can get past the steady distraction of the appearance of AngelinaJolie, of course.Well, that's my review. You guys have been a great audience, thanks forlistening!

feel good movie that motivates you.

I did not think that Angelina Jolie was a good actress until I saw thismovie. This movie makes you stop and think about where you are going inlife and if you are on the right track. It's a subtle rollercoasterdesigned to make you think throughout the whole movie, unlike most movies. I loved it and I would recommend it to everyone.Lesley

feel good flick of the year

Very impressed with this almost unheard of movie(for me at least) Leavesyou feeling great after it ends. Lainie makes the best choice in the endbygoing for the underdog. Many really funny parts in the movie, guaranteedyou will be laughing out loud with everyone in the theater!

Asleep in Seattle

The film presents a dilemma for the main character, Lanie. Does she believethe homeless "oracle", who does predictions, or does she keep her careerlocally? What's an ambitious blonde girl to do? Does she change hair spraybrand at this point, or does she go for a total make over? Decisions, decisions, decisions. When she is confronted with her impending death, one would think Lanie wouldcling to Pete and her ordinary life in Seattle. But no, this girl wants her15 minutes worth of fame, and she gets it! This film doesn't make much sense at all. Angelina Jolie usually plays moreintense characters than this one dimensional bimbo. Tony Shalhoub andStockard Channing's decision to appear in this silly thing will better beexplained to their analysts.

Funkypizza2001 (27 April 2012)

Angelina Jolie deliver's a great comedic performance!

LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE ITSTARRING:ANGELINA JOLIE, EDWARD BURNS, STOCKARD CHANNING, AND CHRISTIANKANE"Life or Something Like it," is a comedy-romance movie. This time of film isnot the kind a lot of people would see Actress Angelina Jolie be in. Sincethis is her first time in a comedy, though, a lot of people would put herdown. I put her highly, though. In my opinion, she did an excellent job.Angelina plays Lanie Kerigan, a local Seattle news-reporter, who meets alonely profit in the streets, and he tells her she is going to die in oneweek. After she watches as his other predictions come true, she starts tolive her life as fun as possible and do all the things she never did before.Tell all the people all the things she was afraid to say.I think Angelina gave an excellent performance, and also did StockardChanning. Even though she was on screen for a couple of minutes, she was oneof the best parts in the film. Edward Burns was another great character inthe film. He played the Lanie's Cameraman, Pete, who she doesn't like, butends up in love with him near the end. I have to say, my favorite part in the whole movie was when Lanie was drunk, and interviewed people on strike. They told her they didn't get anysatisfaction, so she started to sing "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones, and everybody else joins in. It was the best part. I Give this film **** stars out of *****.
