Not for everybody, but definitaly for me!

Absolutely stunning must-see movie for people, who really canappreciate good drama/thriller kind of movies. I enjoyed every singlebit every single sequence and cut was made really good. Movie reminds alittle bit retro style sometimes from 1960's a definitely putscigarette's as a cool thing to do, which I really did not mind, butsome other people might be concerned. Otherwise, I could not find anymistake, I really liked how cut played around with some scenes and itmade felt like I feel everything what director wanted to show and I wasinside every single scene. Actors have done perfect job. The directoris showing, the very bottom of London's society to the very top andswitching between these pictures very precisely, as it is showing powerof some people and how influenced it can be. I know it does not makemuch sense now, but really cannot tell you much more. The very end isunusual and destroys everything what movie was about!(Great performanceand fun placed in one of the most dangerous cities in the world, thoughnot for popcorn kind of crowd) 8.5/10

Totally unstructured, unfounded and with no substance

This is a movie bordering on the unwatchable. I'm displeased to saythat, since Keira Knightley is one of my favourite actresses, and wasin a way disappointed to see her acting in such an embarrassing movie. It is really lacking in everything: the plot, if any exists, does notarouse any interest or involvement, consisting only of an unstructuredsequence of pseudo-events, the screenplay is pathetic and boring, thecharacters are just odd prototypes, interpreted by a cool cast onpaper, but which in the end leaves much to be desired. Colin Farrell asthe good, redeemed macho sounds too artificial, only physicallycapturing when shot dressed in a suit, Keira Knightley does her best tomake the story at least watchable till the end, probably just becausewe want to see how their chemistry will turn out. The picture wasclassified as a thriller, but there is no thrilling scene,I would justclassify it as a kind of farce of romance-drama-gangster, with a littleof all these genres, but a bad little, together with some disturbingviolence, lacking any convincing element. The only interesting point isa good depiction of a gloomy, dark London, which is of course notenough to make a movie worth seeing. So my advice is: Don't see it!

What a waste of time

I had high hopes for this after reading some decent reviews. What a shambles this film is. A decent cast all fail to provide anything worth sticking with. What a long two hours this was listening to Colin Farrell's awful Cockney accent. The story is boring and has far too much swearing, even for a gangster film.Don't bother with this. there are far better films out there!

(17 May 2012)

The most senseless waste of talent I've seen in quite some time.

I looked forward to seeing what William Monaghan could do on his own, away from the watchful eye of Martin Scorsese and a seriously overrated film like THE DEPARTED. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders, and a good ear for dialogue. But where THE DEPARTED lacked in gravity, LONDON BOULEVARD lacks in just about everything.Basically we have an ex-con (Colin Farrell, looking like he needs some Grecian Formula), his crazed drug-addled sister (an amazingly bizarre Anna Friel), his idiot criminal friend (Ben Chaplin, channelling his inner coke-fiend), a damaged and agoraphopic film starlet (Keira Knightley, happy to finally be out of those horrible PIRATES films), her stoner caretaker (the brilliant David Thewlis), and a prerequisite volatile, vulgar and racist crime boss (Ray Winstone, phoning it in here). The main problem with this film is that it starts out strong with a not-entirely novel concept of an ex-con trying to stay as far away as possible from re-entering that life but keeps being pulled by two opposing forces, but it spirals completely out of control once Ray Winstone enters the picture. His character is less of a fleshed-out character and more of a gimmick. He exists solely to force the protagonist of our film to certain extremes. Character arcs as well as storylines are left incomplete. There seems to be a great deal of footage that was left on the cutting room floor that might elongate the runtime of the film, but it might help to complete and clear up some gaping holes. I will never say that I don't love a great film that makes you think or wonder after the credits start rolling, but the story has to make sense first.Aside from the solid work that Farrell, Knightley (who continues to impress after films like the brilliant NEVER LET ME GO and A DANGEROUS METHOD), and Thewlis do, this film is so far beyond making any kind of narrative sense, it's ridiculous. No character is given an opportunity to get fleshed out; the dialogue is pretty rote for this type of film; the direction by Monaghan seems inspired at first, but then becomes less of a homage to the 70's British crime films that apparently inspired it and more of a ripoff. There's almost no level that the film works at other than the three performers I mentioned already, and the ending is beyond moronic. It's very rare I find myself shouting at a film in incredulous anger, but LONDON BOULEVARD did it.

Entertaining Crime Drama

London Boulevard had many flaws but in the end I think it comes outwith more good than bad. The actors give strong performances especiallyWinston and Farrell, and the plot definitely keeps you interested. Thisis a crime movie about gangsters, and doesn't offer much more thananother story about the intertwining and complications of a certaingroup of gangsters. I think some downfalls would be that some of the scenes tended to jumparound and not flow into the next as smoothly but even this was not anissue much of the time. It had a strong sense of style which also madeup for some weak moments in the plot, specifically around the middle ofthe film it looses momentum. If you like crime movies than this wouldsurely entertain you on a Friday night but I wouldn't add it to yourlist of your top ten crime movies of all time.

London Boulevard rocks!

I love the style, unpredictable nature, the casting, the music andmore. I went with no preconceptions, possibly the best way to see it(and any other film I would argue).I found myself being swept along with every minute. If I had to beultra critical there seemed to be a sound problem and some of the linesseemed mumbled, which was a pity. It could have been the cinema I wasin. There was no gratuitous violence, which you might expect from a britgangster flick like this. Every scene had its place. The aggression wasimplied without being rammed home. Some beautiful character defining moments from Farrell, Thewlis andpredictably Winstone, which I won't describe as you'll enjoy theseyourself on first viewing. In all an really enjoyable way to spend an evening or afternoon!

So much promise

Starts well, great soundtrack and packed full of quality actors. Whatmore could you want? Sadly it's just too obvious and the ending is sucha complete let down that you'll wish you hadn't bothered. Perhaps thewriter and director don't watch films or even read books because ifthey did they would have realised that the chain of events that createsthe films narrative has been done so many times before that it's becomestale and fails to provide satisfaction. Another reviewer mentionedLayer Cake which basically has the same ending. i.e. marginal characterkills main protagonist. Layer Cake can be forgiven in that there neverwas a substantial reason to kill or incapacitate the character. Herehowever, there was not only a reason but a clear opportunity to do so... I'm guessing that they thought we'd think what a nice guy at heartMitchel is. Sure killing a 16 year old murderer might have twinged hisconscience but considering what he'd done to get the boys name theleast he would have done is kneecap him. Of course doing so would haveruined the films contrived and pointless ending.

(30 April 2012)

All the components, none of the thrill and Farrell looks good in a suit.

Great soundtrack! Fantastic actors. Dayum, Farrell looks good in a suit. But aside from that, meh. It's just not really cohesive. Farrell's character wants to go straight yet he's the most violent of all the players and I didn't feel it was because he needed to be. And others are correct about the accents. If you watch it, just to see Colin in a suit, of course, have the subtitles on. It was a disappointment but man, Farrell looks good in a suit. Two stars for the movie, three stars for the suit, four for the soundtrack. Averages a three rating.

A Miserable Gangster

There are a lot of empty moments throughout London Boulevard. The storycenters around a brooding ex-con Mitch (Colin Ferrel) who has just beenreleased from prison. Old habits die hard in this character drivenmelo-drama set in a very dreary England, where the hero can't help butfall back on his violent nature. It is not so much a bad story as it is a bad execution. It begs to betold at a quicker pace. The hero's haunted past is never truly flushedout and even with it's neat little aha-ending, it does not resolveenough in it's philosophy. The character's stand as types rather thanpeople, showcasing how the quest for beautiful privacy in the celebrityworld (Keira Knightly) crossed with the seedy private dealings inMitch's crime world can mesh so seamlessly when provoked. As far as gangster films go there have been worse. But even thegangsters of LB, in their ruthlessness, leave something to be desiredin the way that they are captured on film. Where Tarantino might notshow an ear being shaved off, in London Boulevard we hardly see thedeeply vicious violence but only it's aftermath. It's pacing is slow and the story is not grand enough to allow it todribble on the way it does before fizzling out at it's lacklusterconclusion.

Total waste of time!

I watch the film yesterday at home and I really forced myself to stayuntil the end! It was truly disgusting and it's a pity that good actorsare wasted in trash movies like this. There was no central plot, nomeaning of what was happening or why, no romance as it is implied bythe film's description, no real action, no character depth, justbrutal, unjustifiable violence and crappy dialogs. I wasted mytime....and it's not the only film that deceives the audience. It seemssome kind of trend to put big names in non-existing films just to makeyou pay the ticket..I don't think this is a good policy.....people arenot idiots I rate this film with 0.

Great cast

This review is from: London Boulevard (Amazon Instant Video) Ok......this movie was a complete waste of time. Don't watch it, you will be sorry. Colin Farrell was sexy and I loved to watch him walk.....haha.....that was about all the enjoyment I got out of this horrible movie. Not only was it a "what?" storyline, I couldn't understand a bloody word they said half the time. I understand this was a gangster movie but, f--- this and f--- that everyother word???---not so much. Horribly done.....and I am with the other review that was just glad it was over, even though he dies in the end.

Classic crime movie with a novel turn

Mitchel (Collin Farrell) is just released from prison. And he don'thave any intention of going back in though his good old life has quitea few creative methods of living to put him back there. Not exactly agangster but hot tempered and known around the block, Mitchel looks fora fresh start. He gets to work for a solitary actress Charlotte (KeiraKnightley) who is broken after controversy and disturbed to brim withpaparazzi. In the mean time find's him selves caught up between a ganglord and his so called friend who wants to recruit him for their dirtywork. Unexpectedly falling for the actress and making the biggest ganglord in town his grave enemy, Mitchel starts to struggle to balance hislife and get out of everything clean. "London Boulevard" is an entertaining movie. It has drama, crime andquite a bit of action in it as well. And it's quite straight and brutalwhen it comes to shooting and killing people. Amidst all that the moviefirmly builds up the Mitchel character which is portrayed well byFarrell (By now I'm quite disappointed of him not appearing inHollywood movies anymore). He got a sister who is mischievous whom hetries to take care of the way he can, but hard to tolerate with. He gotfriends whom are junkies or crooks he really cannot trust. All he wantsis to live clean but that's the only thing he fails to achieve. Theother characters are pretty much strong as well. Charlotte the actressseems to have a lot going around her and now looking for earlyretirement after disliking many what had happened. The gang lord Granlikes to show his might around the block and a tough guy in a cleansuit. The movie has a good phase. It hardly drags or hardly over accelerates. The script is good which I had a little difficult time to catch up dueto British pronunciation and sub titles came for my rescue. However comparing with those good gang movies which came out in Brittonlike Layer Cake or Green Street Hooligans, London Boulevard is prettyimmature. It has a good plot but not a very creative one or a memorableone. You may enjoy this movie no doubt. But if you felt that it endedtoo soon welcome to my boat. Wow, what a letdown...

I don't know what's with Colin and why he picks all these terriblemovies but I'm getting frustrated as hell... He does one decent filmand after that he completely chooses the most boring and crappy scriptever.London Boulevard starts boring as hell. In the first five minutes Isaid "this is another bad movie with great cast" and yes it is. BesidesFarrell you have the lovely Keira Knightley and the young OpheliaLovibond (a name probably unknown for many but a face prettyrecognizable) and the two British actors Ray Winstone, David Thewlisand Stephen Graham. With all that, the movie departs itself completelyfrom reality and enters into a world of boredom and mindlesssavageness. I would have been more interested in a film where Colinbangs all these hot actresses attached to this messy project than tosee a "whatever" type of movie. The story mainly is about this guy Mitchell (Colin Farrell) who justout of prison gets hired by this beautiful actress Charlotte (KeiraKnightley) to protect her from the paparazzi and other interferences inher life. Now, the director got it all wrong with these journalismthing. Since when 5-6 publications put the same picture of the sameactress on their magazines? You could have thought about other methodsto show how popular this Charlotte was but don't do such amateurishmistakes like this because it really takes away the realism. There's nosuch thing as 2 big tabloids having the same picture on the front pagebecause that would be BAD BUSINESS you dumbass. Back to the topic, thisguy Mitchell, even with a proper job, he still gets in parallelproblems. Why? Honestly, there is no logical reason. I mean god damn...you got a nice job man, get over it. But no, he has this friend whodied in ugly circ*mstances, being killed by two bastards. He goes on apersonal vendetta, a pointless revenge to say the truth. With all thathe goes on a criminal journey for a "big shot" jumping out in aclicheic form out of a black Rolls Royce Phantom. Laughing my ass off.ON TOP OF THAT, Mitchell and Charlotte, of course, end up together. Soyou got a "love story", a "revenge story", a "crime story" and a"family story" considering Mitchell's relationship with his sister(forgot to talk about that). But the film doesn't offer nothingsatisfying for neither these issues. All hail the paparazzi though, atleast they know what they were after because obviously the directordidn't. I was surprised at times that had some funny moments which arespecific for any British film. You need to have that English humorimpregnated in the story otherwise the film will loose it's britapproval stamp. I enjoyed those moments but other than that there'snothing interesting left. The acting was barely mediocre. Keira was not in her good days, Farreldid his old bored to hell character and the rest were simply "usual".Nothing to talk about so I'll go directly to the execution. First ofall, the music is terrible in the movie. It has nothing to do withwhat's on the screen and I think it was chosen just because it soundedcool. Well, it didn't. It's one of the worst choices for a film Iheard. The music was too quick for the film's slow pacing. It's like awrong contrast between brown and purple. The camera work was average. The editing was average. Everything was under my expectations.I honestly don't know why this movie was made. It's pointless, it hastons of bad lines, awful dialogue, mediocre acting, average execution, messy storyline... Wow, what a letdown...

Fun and Slick

This movie really did it's best to build something up, and you expectsomething to happen. Mostly in other movies, where the ex-prisonerdoesn't want anything to do with crime, but cannot get disconnectedfrom that world of gangsters. And of course there has to be a girl whoget's into the middle of this, which makes it even more stereotype. Butthat didn't happen, it really surprised me, and made it a lot moreentertaining. Colin Farrell makes it look smooth, and he fits in this role perfectlyjust like in In Bruges or in The Recruit. Keira Knightley is not thatimportant in this movie, it could have been anyone. David Thewlisplayed a careless somewhat hippie, which makes it a bit less serious.Other supporting actors like Ray Winston (Gant) performed well. Concluding, it surprised me, plus I thought the acting was very welldone, especially by Colin Farrell, who made it really look easy!

http://readreels.blogspot.in/ : A half baked cake.Half is so good that you'll want your full but sadly its not there.

London Boulevard, a crime caper kind of a movie stars Keira Knightleyand Colin Farrel in the lead. The films starts with Colin Farrel'scharacter Mitchel getting out of prison after three years. He decides togo straight. He takes a job of protecting this young out of work actressCharlotte that Keira Knightley's playing who is quite unsocial andreclusive in nature and is quite paranoid with the surroundingpaparazzi.Charlotte lives with Jordon played by David Thewlis who playshis part exceptionally well. The problems start when Gant who is a bigtime don becomes interested in Mitchel. You'll get the idea if you haveseen Michael Mann's Thief as this film's outline is quite similar butthey are totally different films.Keira has little to do in the movie, though i haven't read the novelthis film is based on but I'm sure Keira's character in the novel wouldhave been much more developed than what we see in the film and to makethis story work that was essential. The chemistry between the leads hasfew moments but they are not fully realized and it feels choppedoff.Although the film was beautifully scripted but the acting sometimeslooked forced and quite unnatural at times.Only David Thewlis catchesyour eyes every time he's on the screen.Colin Farrel never makes mecare about his situation or his dilemma.London Boulevard doesn't quite finds its foot between its romance andviolence and sadly stays quite mediocre throughout.Through last twentysomething minutes promise to be fulfilling but they are undone by theending with what we see and what we don't.Its a nice time spender butyou don't get a reward back from it and that's what makes it sodisappointing. Its a dart that misses the board.

Ronnie Kray lives - again

This got 4 stars in the Independent; I wonder why. The Colin Farrellcharacter, out of jail and hot for some fresh action, has been seen inso many UK and US crime movies (though admittedly not looking this cutebefore). Ray Winstone's gay crimelord (his homosexuality mainly inreported speech; perhaps Winstone doesn't actually "do" gay) can betraced back to Richard Burton's 1971 VILLAIN or Bob Hoskin'sheterosexual version in THE LONG GOOD Friday (1980), both clearlyvariants on Reggie (straight) and Ronnie (gay) Kray.Farrell was very hot in the sex scenes; Keira Knightley wasn't. HerI-want-to-be-alone starlet and David Thewlis's spaced-out weirdo seemedto belong to another story altogether. The two plot-lines, the lovestory and the gangland rivalry, were very disjointedly linked.More violent films than this have had an 18 rating, so presumably itwas the liberal use of the C-word that qualified this one. Naughty guysuse a lot of naughty words: wow, there's a major revelation! The wholething was like Guy Ritchie on a bad day (prior to SHERLOCK he washaving too many of those). Writer and director must do better.

London Boulevard

For me this film was a complete waste of time for a couple of reasons;I don't like how every character is introduced, it's almost as ifyou're seeing the final part of a story without a beginning and middleto each character and leaves you having work out who they are, who theyare associated with and what's their main purpose in the film. The other bit that caught me unawares was how quick the scenes were, the film looked like a story half complete but completed in a rush, thekillings were too quick without any real background to them or suspensebuilding for example; one minute he's on the phone to his sister thenthe next scene he's all suited and booted in France then the next cliphe kills one of the biggest gangsters in the film.I struggled to get into the movie, found it hard to relate withcharacters and was generally complexed by the whole storyline which wassummed up by two lads killing Collin Farrell at the end..It's a confusing story between a busker, a promising footballer strokehood rat killing one of the biggest villains in the movie, an over thetop involvement on paparazi for a women who appeared to be stuck in ahouse despite having millions..What I would say is, the little stories before Ray killed his victimswas very chilling.

Carlito's Way ---- No Way!

I read a review suggesting that this grating flick is on par with"Carlito's Way" and I just have to say no way! First of all, ColinFarrell is a far cry from Al Pacino, and that is being kind. I alwaysfeel as if I am watching a huge pair of eyebrows attached to a reallysmall person when I am watching Colin Farrell, so much so that I justabout cannot watch any movie he has ever been in. And as far as thecharacters in this movie, these people are just totally, infuriatinglyworthless. I really struggled to watch this movie from beginning to endbecause of the idiotic, adult-child characters, and of course there isthe extremely predictable storyline. Here is what this very unenjoyablemovie is about: A man gets out of prison and then he is tempted to getback into "the life." It was obvious from that point (which was aboutseven minutes into the movie) how it was going to turn out. Save yourmoney and rent a decent movie like "Carlito's Way" which the plot for"London Boulevard" was painfully, obviously absconded.

Great gangster movie

I did not know anything about this film until I saw it. I felt greatlyentertained while watching it and was happy to find David Thewlis inthe cast (haven't seen him since Naked). The movie takes this sort ofviolent trajectory and just spirals down into the inevitable finale. There is a sort of a romance going on between Colin Farrell and KeiraKnightley but thankfully it does not overshadow the gangster theme ofthe story. Ray Winstone is great as the villain and there are othergreat performances as well (for instance by Thewlis). All the acting isnot flawless but all in all it's a movie I would tell my friends to gosee. Only negative thing I have to say is about the ending. I don'tlike it when the hero is killed in the end by a good-for-nothing kid!One thing that brought me a lot of pleasure the plot aside was the factthat Farrell at one point cites the writer R. M. Rilke. I did not nowthat guy until I saw the film. Guys, you cannot but dig the quote"Everything terrible is something that needs our love".

The Dark Side: Miscalculations

LONDON BOULEVARD is a British film that is unafraid to take a long hard look at the dark side of London - organized and unorganized crime, miscreants of all ages, vengeance, substance abuse - and still come up with a 'bruised hero' with whom we can relate. The film has its problems: the dialects of these 'English speaking' actors is so thick that it becomes necessary to turn on the subtitles to understand the dialogue, some characters are insufficiently define, the music soundtrack overwhelms the action too frequently. Yet the cast of actors is so strong that they overcome these problems and ultimately give us a terrifyingly real glimpse at the low life happenings in that major metropolis.Mitchel (Colin Farrell, looking better than he has in years) has just been released from jail, an experience he never wants to face again, but his old friends such as Billy (Ben Chaplin) tempt him to get back into big crime. Mitchel still stops by the street people to see his old friend Joe (Alan Williams) who warns Mithcel to stay away from Billy. Mitchel finds a job as a bodyguard for actress Charlotte (Keira Knightley) who stays secluded from the omnipresent paparazzi in her home where she lives with an ex-actor now druggie Jordan (David Thewlis). Billy learns of Mitchel's new job and informs the local crime lord Gant (Ray Winstone) and a plot to rob Charlotte's home is hatched. Mitchel will have nothing to do with the plot, warning Gant that he will never work for crime again. A series of brutal murders occur including the slaughter of old Joe by two young footballers - a deed that enrages Mitchel, but even this need for vengeance is something he cannot carry out. The plot thickens and other atrocities arise, but Mitchel has fallen in love with the delicate Charlotte and urges her to flee to Los Angeles to rid herself of the dangers and the paparazzi. But despite Mitchel's attempts to stay clean in the midst of the thickening mire that Gant creates, he is thwarted at every turn. The ending is a major surprise.William Monahan (Body of Lies, The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven) wrote and directed this film based on the novel by Ken Bruen. It is harsh, it is dark, but it is a fine example of film noir. Colin Farrell is superb in the every difficult role of Mitchel - his acting skills are polished and his characterization is wholly credible. The supporting cast - Winstone, Thewlis, Knightley, Chaplin, Eddie Marsan, Anna Friel as Mitchel's alcoholic wasted sister, Jamie Campbell Bower - is astonishingly fine. This is not a film for the fainthearted, but it is a powerful little movie with many bits of afterburn to keep the audience guessing. Grady Harp, November 11
