Another creepy over-use of CGI

My 3 year old loves CGI movies, even Beverly Hills Chihuahua (whichlet's face it was pretty average at best). She didn't like this movieat all. It's not cute, it's not adult, it's not a lot of things and the mostimportant thing it isn't is entertaining. This film is a horrible adaptation - the characters are not reallylikable, there is a confusing mish-mosh of adult aimed humor andsituations involving the supervillain Megamind, and then just horribleparts featuring the humans. Will Ferrell is sinister and extremelycreepy as the supervillain Megamind - he could have been kooky andfunny, a little zany perhaps, but no, he comes across as aggressive, pushy and sinister. The story itself is stupid and lacking in any real interest for theyoung kids this movie is really supposed to be aimed at. The adultsforced to take the kids won't find anything better in it either.I would advise anyone not to even both renting it for a dollar, it'snot worth it, and I don't say that about many movies.CGI may be very clever and way better than it used to be, but thismovie over uses it to the point of boredom on the part of the viewer.CGI isn't enough if there is no real, interesting story - I for onecould care less about Brad Pitt and his new job at the pet foodcompany.Nothing about this movie is appealing!

Steven Rea (23 May 2012)

Megamind has momentum and dazzle.

Catherine Jones (23 May 2012)

The film appropriates elements from Shrek and The Incredibles and produces an entertaining hybrid that should have parents chuckling with glee.

Hilarious!!

This movie is great entertainment for the whole family. My husband and I busted up over Will Ferrell's one liners and our 9 year old got quite the kick out of it as well. We watched it 3 times in 2 days and will most likely be adding it to our permanent collection.

Very entertaining

This review is from: Megamind (Single-Disc Edition) (DVD) I purchased this for my grandchildren to watch when at my house. They are absolutely in love with it and I must admit I haven't gotten tired of it yet. You can't go wrong with this movie.

It's Despicable Me + Superman

2010 has seen many animated movies with the same 3D treatment whichinclude March's "How to Train Your Dragon", May's "Shrek ForeverAfter", June's "Toy Story 3", July's "Despicable Me" and the recent"Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" which blasted onSeptember. While October sees none, November's first animated film (thesecond one being "Tangled") is "Megamind", a similar movie to"Despicable Me" but in a Supermanalized version."Megamind" uses concepts from Superman such as a foreign planet is onthe way to destruction while one little young of the species is hopedto survive and live in another planet. That's what has happened toMegamind. But the twist is that there are two outer-spaced people andthe other one is Metroman, the more Superman-like person compared toMegamind. Just as Megamind was about to arrive at a royal, happy house on Earth,Metroman gets the spot first and bumps Megamind's capsule causingMegamind to end up in jail. There, Megamind learns criminal stuff andsoon, when he grew up, he faces off his nemesis Metroman. But, whenMetroman has lost and died, bored, Megamind creates a new super-poweredhero. But, the new super-powered person didn't want to become a herobut instead a villain. Megamind, for the first time in his life, becomes a hero.Megamind is a unique character. With the big blue head, his plans areactually ingenious but is easily tricked by other people. This makeshim a funny criminal rather than a scary one. He has a friend namedMinion which is a fish that has a robot body. He's like Dr.Doofenshmirtz in Phineas and Ferb but slightly more intelligent andbetter luck.By the way, you might be wondering what Tina Fey's character does inthe story. Well, her character, Roxanne Ritchi is a reporter for anewscast who supports Metroman. After Megamind impersonates as a friendof hers, she starts to have a relationship with him even after Megamindwas discovered of pretending to be her friend.Of course, what fuels animated movies is the jokes. That seems to bewhat lacks in "Megamind" as the original jokes are quite a few. But,one of them was ingenious. The 3D effects were satisfying enough for me and they were quite deepenough for an average 3D movie. The animation was not so stiff and thelocations and everything was very much detailed.Voice performances were excellent especially Will Ferrel's who owns thepart of the titular character. Tina Fey's performance was also well andseemed to sound confident. Brad Pitt shows his talent of voice actingtoo. David Cross who plays Megamind's pet fish is also well andsatisfying. Jonah Hill's performance as Hal or Titan was alsoexcellent. The acting was all good. Overall, "Megamind" is a perfect kid's movie even though a big blueheaded hero may sound scary. But, kids will definitely enjoy the filmvery much as I do with the lovable characters especially Megamindhimself who is funny and ingenious. "Megamind" is truly recommended.Prince AJB's Score: 8/10Thank you for reading my review on "Megamind". Hope it's useful.

Awesome Family Fun!!!

This movie is perfect for the whole family. It's hilarious and has aheart-warming storyline. Will Ferrell was awesome as Megamind, thevillain and Metro Man's archenemy. On the day Metro Man is beinghonored by the city, Megamind breaks out of jail with the help of atalking fish named Minion and kidnaps Roxanne Ritchi. Megamind finallydefeats Metro Man and takes over the city. Over time, Megamind growsbored and wants an enemy to fight. He creates a serum of Metro Man'sDNA in order to create a superhero, but along the way, he disguiseshimself as a museum curator named Bernard and starts to fall in lovewith Roxanne. After he accidentally turns Roxanne's cameraman, Hal intoa hero, he uses his power for evil. Megamind must stop him, save thegirl, and become the hero himself. I highly recommend MEGAMIND!!!

Funny!

I really enjoyed this movie. Good story, funny throughout, and great visual effects. The leading-edge of 3D. I initially thought this movie would be a warmed-over Incredibles, but the story is very different and surprising. I highly recommend this movie.

Adam Tobias (13 May 2012)

Megamind isn't necessarily a bad movie - it just doesn't do much to distinguish itself from the rest of the pack.

Will Farrell's Personal Avatar

The release of "Megamind" on the first Friday in November marks thebeginning of the winter blockbuster season and shows that Will Farrell,Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, David Cross and Jonah Hill know how to draw acrowd to the box office. "Megamind" is the latest DreamWorks animationstory that incorporates different aspects from Superman. The basic plotconcerns the epic rivalry that began when a blue super villain aliennamed Megamind (Will Farrell) and his arch nemesis superhero Metro Man(Brad Pitt) were babies. They both were saved from the destruction oftheir respective planets by small spacecrafts destined for earth. Theirrivalry continued as they both grew up living very different separatelives fighting periodically through the years. All of these battlesresulted in the defeat of Megamind up until one day that changed bothof their lives forever and Megamind's perspective of good versus evil. The character Megamind is an exact replica of what Will Farrell wouldlook like if James Cameron made him into an Avatar. With this beingsaid Will Farrell is funnier than ever and is able to carry his humorover from his movies aimed at an older audience and transform it intohumor appropriate for younger kids. The film also has a special guestappearance from the film's producer Ben Stiller as the voice of thecharacter Bernard. Tina Fey ("SNL", "Date Night") is also in the filmplaying the voice of news reporter Roxanne Ritchi who is involved in avery interesting love affair with Stiller's character Bernard. DavidCross's and Jonah Hill's characters join the party as well playing thecharacters of Minion and Hal respectively in very different and dynamicperformances. Despite the voices of these actors, the best part of thefilm is the entertainment value that Will Farrell brings to the table.Brad Pitt's character Metro Man is also animated to a T, depictingexactly what Pitt would look like as an animated superhero. However,Pitt is almost nonexistent in the film after the opening ten-minutes ofthe movie. Where did he go? The disappearance of Pitt hurts the filmand complicates the story line that should have been simple andstraightforward. The film suffers from animated movieitis stemming fromplot holes, discontinuities and lack of substance. Characters thatshould not have been very important to the film are developed into maincharacters, while making the film "Pittless." Therefore, the movie as awhole does not succeed in creating a compelling story.Overall, the film is a very entertaining, fun family film that everyonecan enjoy. However, you can wait for DVD to see it. Also, don't expecta film in the same league as "Toy Story 3" or "How to Train YourDragon," instead expect a film that relies solely on the humor of WillFarrell as he succeeds in stealing the spotlight on the animated screenonce again as he did in the 2006 film "Curious George."

An enjoyable animation for adults and kids alike

I watched this movie tonight with my wife and kids, we really enjoyed this a lot, i found myself actually attached to the characters and intrigued by the plot. i also found myself entertained with the action scenes. my kids also enjoyed it, more so than they enjoyed the lame Alpha and Omega. I guess most of you know what the plot is, so i won't go into it. it is just fun and involves super powers and super heros battles. most of you are probably reading this to decide whether to go and see it or not, let me say, go ahead, it is worth it and enjoyable !! And i also like to add, we watched it in 2D, so im not sure how it is in 3D, but im assuming just as good if not better.by med77_99 (Los Angeles)

Simon Abrams (26 April 2012)

Megamind may initially seem like a superhero spoof in the comedic vein of Shrek, but it reveals itself to be smarter, funnier, and infinitely more sympathetic than that.

Rachel Hyland (26 April 2012)

A philosophical Nature VS Nurture debate masquerading as a hilarious kids' movie.

Oh, this is the stuff! What a tremendously enjoyable movie MEGAMINDturned out to be. Sure, the origin story is profoundly unlikely and thedenouement is positively unbelievable, but who the hell cares? Thismovie is fun, fun, fun. And Will Ferrell, as the misunderstoodsupervillain at its heart, is funny, funny, funny. The star-studded MEGAMIND tells the story of a criminal mastermind whofinally defeats his archnemesis, Metro Man (defender of Metro City --or, as Megamind styles it, Metrocity) and therefore takes over therunning of the town they call home. Of course, there is a reporter inthe mix, one Roxanne Ritchi, who is an obsession with our supposedvillain, full of moxie and earnestness and voiced ably by Tina Fey.Jonah Hill plays her infatuated and infantile camera man, Hal, withconsummate blabbering skill, and his transformation into a spurnedsadist by the movie's end is delivered with great relish. David Crossis superlative as Megamind's fish-like minion, the aptly-named Minion, and Brad Pitt is perfectly serviceable as Metro Man.But the star here is the petulant and accident-prone ramblings ofFerrell as Megamind. His mispronunciations are unendingly amusing, hismegalomania is kind of adorable, and his unbridled arrogance is somehowcharmingly endearing. He's a lot like KIM POSSIBLE's Dr. Drakken, actually (who is also, I would point out, blue), but is a far moresympathetic character. I mean, he's mindboggling brilliant, but doesn'tseem to understand what a "code" for something is. That is SO CUTE. Thewriting here is top notch, and it is mostly the dialogue he is giventhat makes this movie really pop, but there can be no doubt thatFerrell brings an instantly likable tone to proceedings that makesMEGAMIND a treat from the very outset. How tragic, that Ferrell's best performance since Ron Burgundy shouldcome in a movie in which he doesn't even make an appearance. The underlying theme here is one of Nature vs. Nurture, as one of thoseHere's the Moral, Kids voice over wrap ups at the end makes all tooclear. Redemption is possible, everyone makes mistakes, don't judge abook by its cover, we should all follow our bliss, yadda yadda yadda.Whatever, dude. This year's DESPICABLE ME also sang that song, and it'shardly the first; the anti-hero is certainly nothing new in genre. FromThe Punisher to Riddick to Dr. Horrible (a debt to whom Megamind surelyowes a thing or two; Metro Man, certainly, is at least a spiritual heirto Captain Hammer, with perhaps a little Roger Ramjet thrown in), thetrope has been very well explored. What MEGAMIND does is to elevatethat concept into the kind of What Next? scenario superhero storiesrarely address: what happens when there is no bad guy left to battleanymore? And what if the bad guy wins? What exactly makes a bad guy?And if bad guys don't get the girl, can being a good guy maybe get yousome action? (In cartoons, the answer to that is apparently -- andperhaps a little misleadingly -- yes.) Produced by Ben Stiller, thismovie also features his voice in a brief cameo as misanthrope Bernard, whose guise Megamind takes on as he woos the oblivious Roxanne. (Atleast it's not just him with glasses on; and we never do discover ifMetro Man has an alter ego. That's a refreshing change!) Some of themovie's most enjoyable moments come about as we watch our blue-skilledsupervillain begin to live his own life instead of try to controleveryone else's… although, none of that can hold a candle to Minion'sOscar-worthy comedy death scene.I have to say, I've not been previously too enamored of Dreamworks'other animated features. SHARK TALE, MADAGASCAR, KUNG FU PANDA, therecent HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON… I didn't hate any of them, but neitherdid they really win my heart. (And SHREK: blech.) But with this one, Iam suddenly a convert to the SKG fold, and can only hope they hold trueto form and decide to put out a sequel.Called MINION.

Black Mamba

This review is from: Megamind (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) AC DC's music, thrills, chills, Brad Pitt, Will Ferrell, Tina Faye play great roles in the movie.Watch the bad guy almost get the girl -- possibly (Spoiler alert).

Definantly worth the watch at any age

In my opinion this is Will Ferrels best movie yet, as a matter of fact it's the best movie I've seen in a long time. If you like me and get tired of the the same cliche storylines and really get tired of watching animation because that is what your kids like, this movie will not disappoint. I started watching this movie with my son, with in the back of my mind "great another animation to annoy me for 90 minutes", but it didn't. It was fun and entertaining and I even forgot I was watching an animated movie. My son has watched it repeatedly since then and I havn't gotten tired of it. I even request it on occation.

Terrible

This review is from: Megamind (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) I love animated movies and was particularly interested in this one due to the high profile actors, but is was extremely disappointing to the point of giving me a headache. The story is a good one, but it never really gels enough for anyone to care. Finally, the viewer never buys into pulling for any of the characters. This is a major flaw. Who cares which characters make a surprise comeback as you didn't care when they left in the beginning. Plus, was Megamind that terrible to begin with? Maybe, but you had to search for clues to find out if you cared or not. Again, great story line but poorly developed.

Dustin Putman (16 April 2012)

May be worth seeing, but interested viewers would do well to either find a theater showing it in two dimensions or just wait for the inevitably superior Blu-Ray release.

Laughed out loud, and i'm a scrooge!

After some waivering, I decided to see Megamind 3D. I'm a big fan of 3D, and the 3D is done very well. There is no reason to see the 2d version when the 3D is available. As I said the movie is funny, but not by telling jokes. It's funny in a real way, generally done via sarcasm, goofy grammar usage, and self-deprecation. The plot is a nice change from the typical hero/villain plot, and will keep you interested! The biggest thing that not many people are mentioning is how brilliantly done the animation is. The images, and scenery are so crisp and vivid, it really is mind blowing. Paired with the 3D effects, this is a visually stunning movie.I regret waivering on this movie. I almost didn't even bother with it. I'm glad I listened to the good reviews, and took the plunge. It was worth every penny, and every minute spent.Dreamworks is on a roll.

Peter Bradshaw (15 April 2012)

Good stuff, up to a point, but nothing like the passion and brilliance of The Incredibles or Toy Story.
