Borderline

This movie vividly portrays the idealism of a young man and the manipulativeness of the young woman he idealizes. As he continues to try to feel loved and accepted by her, she oscillates between love and hate which makes his journey that much more painful. As he discovers more about her past, he wades further and further into his own denial about the reality of her problems. No one ever said heroin addiciton was easy and carefree. Certainly this movie depicts a common relationship dynamic between two addicts. They always try to fulfill each other's needs with each other but end up fulfilling it with heroin. His low self-esteem is no match for the occasional carrot she throws out to him. She only adds insult to injury by following her carrots with a really large hammer that always shatters his need for closeness that he feels only she can fulfill. Its a love/hate world and this movie is a great snapshot at the "I love you don't leave me" phenomenon that is portrayed in Mimsy. Poor guy.

For Floyd Fans Only!

This review is from: More (DVD) This is actually not a very good movie. The "draw" for me was the Pink Floyd score. If you're a serious Floyd person, you ought to have it. The film itself is pretty dated and shallow. A curiosity for the collector.

Days of dope and roses

Kind of a low-key "Days of wine and roses," this is hardly a standard 1960'sdrug film. Director Schroeder (whom one can deduce is represented by Charliethe good-natured street hustler) states initially it's about a friend whodied of drug overdose, so we know it's going to be a story of psychiccorruption rather than an exploration of the ideals of Timothy Leary. Itmight seem that Schroeder is really glamorizing drugs simply by example, aswell as by showing the sex life of the characters, and by employing a realpsychedelic band for the soundtrack. However, Schroeder doesn't showsubjective scenes of drug use; the characters trip out in their own world, usually detached from another, and the audience watches like the only soberperson at a frat party. Their sex life soon peters out as drugs take overtheir lives. Using Pink Floyd was probably to attract unwitting youth anddrug-users to see (without being preached to) how drugs can kill. What probably does seem 'standard 1960s' to viewers today is the flat, realistic style of the film which doesn't grab the viewer (unlike the morerecent "Sid and Nancy" or "Trainspotting") but was typical of independentand European films of that time. However it's still watchable, and a mustfor early-Pink Floyd (or "The Pink Floyd", as they're billed in the credits)fans.

A cool, but quirky flik

I suppose most of us bought this movie for $90.00 or got it on eBay. In anycase, I've owned this movie for five years, but only watched it a few times. I watched it again last night with my fiance and we both really enjoyed it. The main actor (a German fella) is very strange. He has a real thickaccent and is a typical German. He starts the movie drug-free, then takes atrip w/ Estelle to Ibiza, did anyone else notice how much he slaps her?? Then he ends up dealing for an ex-Nazi.They trip at bonfire parties, deal, and try Horse. He gets addicted...Shehas a pattern of ruining men...I am a dedicated Pink Floyd fan, so that's why I bought it, I must agreewith the previous postings...the soundtrack is excellent. Ibiza Bar,Cymbaline and Main Theme all did the movie justice.Well worth watching, but good luck finding it!

Standard "Trippy" 60's Junk

"More" is yet another addition into the countless pile of 60's druggie, trippy junk. Avoid at all cost. Terrible acting, equally moribund script. The only thing to enjoy is Pink Floyd's wonderful soundtrack, which is toogood for stereotypical waste like this.

A trip in a hippie heaven, 1968

Beautiful Mimsy Farmer travels from Paris to Ibiza during the 1968riots.Early Barbet Schroeder movie, with a notable OST by the Pink Floydattheir best. Drugs, dreams, sex and violence in a heavenly landscape, withatouch of thrilling. Very appealing for all those who think that thesixtieswere a kindof a golden age. Hard to find, no video on sale or rent. I eventuallywatched it in a festival in Milan.

Very interesting movie.Love, sex, drugs, psychedelian trips, searching for truth, naked sunbathing in the magic beautiful island of Ibiza of '69.Personally I think this is a cult movie.

Classic 60s Drug Tragedy, really one-of-a-kind, a small classic.

Has there ever been an Angel of Death like MIMSY FARMER in BarbetSchroeder's 1960s heroin opus? Sort of Jean Seberg with a hypodermic. PinkFloyd score. Despite some ultimately insignificant weaknesses, aclassic, shamelessly ripped off by Erich Segal/Noel Black for their ineptJENNIFER ON MY MIND (1971), although Tippy Walker, playing a similarcharacter, is herself very junkie-appealing in the latter mess. MORE,though, is terrific, a great 60s drug movie and, simply, an importantdocument of its time. Very much a cult film so join the cult.No American movie then, as far as I can remember, charts the sameterritory.MIMSY's an astonishing archetype, elevating this into mythic realms. Notforthe faint-hearted. Great sex scenes too.

Whoa!

This movie is simply one of the best movies I have the privilage of owning. It took me years to come up with this movie and it was well worth it. Themovie is meant to be anti-drug propaganda but turns itself into theoppositewhile not even halfway through the movie. The relished look on the facesofthe players as they receive their bounty of drugs is pleasing to all thosewho observe. Untill the final phase pf their drug induced lives, heroincomes for its say. YIKES! This is the anti-drug message that was sofabulously sought. The soundtrack for this movie kicks butt! By far it isone of Pink Floyds best albums ever! If ever the chance, take a look, listen, and moment to witness a spectacularly made movie.

Dig it...

I totally liked "More"... Nestor Alemandros does excellent camera work as always, Mimsy Farmer is a complete babe, and there's lots of cool scenes of them getting high. And actually, it's a pretty accurate morality tale.. I don't think it falls for the 'reefer madness' stuff, but it shows a starkly realistic descent into the nightmare of heroin addiction. I'm suprised the movie is not given a fair shake.. during the wild, get-high times of the late '60s, this is a great little film that shows the downside of drug culture without being preachy. And it's gorgeous to look at.

More

This film is only a must for the extremist Floyd/Farmer fan and collector; just to say,"I have it!". There was plenty of drug use, a fair amount of sexual play and an ex-Nazi. The problem is that none of that made the movie interesting. Almost all of the character scenes were plain straight on shots. Even the dramatic landscapes that comprise much of the films setting seem muted by the lack of life and genuine emotion from the actors. The Monkees TV show had better camera work. The Floyd score is heavily re-mixed well into the film as to make it still pretty neat but unintelligible as published Floyd music. Reminds me a bit of 'Liquid Sky'. It was probably a more interesting experience to make this movie than it was watch it.

Of Beauty, Sex and Drugs... More

'More' is a film legendary amongst Floyd collectors, and is well worth thetime spent searching, since it features some of the bands' mostspontaneousand eclectic work.I was lucky enough to find some evidently battered and old publicitypostcards for the film at a local art centre. The copy on the card makesforgood reading if you enjoy the film, or are interested in it'shistory:_____________________________________________________________"of beauty, sex and drugs: more""'More' probably contains more footage of naked bodies than any other filmthat has made it past Plymouth Rock. It's strong stuff. A powerful movieabout drugs. Mimsy Farmer as Estelle, is one of the real baddies of alltime, a totally amoral person who shoots heroin (even under her tongue!),cavorts in the nude, lies, steals, makes love to girls, and destroys everyman who falls in love with her." - The Sunday New YorkTimes."'More' is tough, candid stuff, clearly among the good ones." - NationalObserver."A very beautiful, very romantic movie." - The New YorkTimes. The card features a wonderful black and white picture of Estelle andStefanin characteristically joyous mood celebrating their (perhaps new-found andill-fated) freedom, and classifies the film as "'X' Persons Under 17 NotAdmitted".Interestingly the film saw general video release in France with a '12'certificate.My copy, available via amazon.com, and released by Janus Films and HomeVision Cinema, does not state a certificate, though the drug use wouldprobably warrant an '18' certificate if release were attempted in theUK.Circa 2000, the film is broadcast on monthly rotation by Film Four, a UKsubscription film channel.

For those who Lived it...

In 1969, "More" prompted many young urbanites to move to Ibiza, to live the utopian dream. The Pink Floyd is a favorite among the expatriate veterans who still live on the island. English is the proper language for this movie, for, not only it facilitated its commercialization, but actually is the lingua franca among these expressive expatriates. Though a tad disappointing as a movie production, "More" historically embodies the Spirit of a time. The acting is quite ludicrous at the beginning, but it gradually improves, as the narrative unfolds and the actors get into their roles. In any case, More is definitely a cult of the counterculture, thematizing the challenges and shortcomings of transpersonal utopia. Reflecting the anti-heroine stance (drug which ultimately throws hippies down from bliss to destruction), the movie resonates with autobiographies, such as Cleo Odzer's "Goa Freaks", and it can be better understood by the anthropological book by Anthony D'Andrea, "Global Nomads" about Ibiza and Goa/India.If you experienced the counterculture, and/or were in Ibiza (its alternative world, not tourism...), or like chaotic romances in exotic yet real situations, then you will love the movie. But if you don't empathize with any of the related issues, then it is better not to expect too much...

Long, long, long

A film typical of the style of the late 1960's early 70's, however, thisis somewhat better. The story centers around a young man who meets anattractive young woman (Farmer). The woman introduces him to the sordidworld of heroin addiction (referred to by the old street name, "horse", inthis film). As the movie progresses, the hero becomes more and more into thedrug scene. I will not expose the ending as it is a bit of a surprise, and quitewell done, too. Most notably about this film, the soundtrack was done by Pink Floyd, whoreleased it as an album the same year the film was made. Because of this, the film is of importance to hardcore Pink Floyd fans. Not a great film, but a good one anyway, and one that carries animportant anti-hard-drugs message. As it is somewhat rare, purchase pricescan be fairly high to ludicrous, so it is advised you rent it first (if youcan find it. My local Blockbuster used to carry it at one time).

More, more

"We were outcasts of our own micro-society" observes the doomedprotagonist of Barbet Schroeder's 1969 cult curio. Specifically, he'stalking about being a junkie, during an era when hash and LSD wereconsidered more conducive to peace and love. But he could also betalking about More itself.Pink Floyd aficionados may know it, if at all, for the band'ssoundtrack (even then, the film manages to misspell Dave Gilmour'sname); but compared with classic head fare like Easy Rider orPerformance, More is something of a bejewelled footnote.Says Schroeder, it's "less a story of its time, more a timelesstragedy", and this contemporary staging of the Icarus myth is indeed aneternal tale of crash and burn. And yet this fascinating documentpositively reeks of the late-1960s from every pore. Exquisitelyphotographed (on location in Ibiza), and seductive and patience-testingby turns, it's a trip alright, but a smarter and more sober one thanyou'd expect.

Cool hippie era film

I enjoyed this movie on many levels such as musically with the PinkFloyd early era music, the nice scenery, historically such as the drug useand the attitudes at the time ; the sensuality of some scenes- the nudity added to the feeling of personal freedom that is very attractive in the film and at the same time lead to tragedy which makes it a good story and film.

Gimme more

This review is from: More (DVD) With a soundtrack by Pink Floyd and a trip to the sunny Mediterreanian island of Ibiza what could go wrong? In a word, Heroin. Two happy-go-lucky people meet in Europe during the late 60's, when freedom was believed to be more than a slogan. Moving within the counterculture of the time, they meet amid the rebellion of their peers, who consumed illicit drugs by increasing numbers. Seeking fun and relaxed living they boat to Ibiza, apparently a heroin staging site. They become hooked and lose their freedom. Filmed with great beauty and tragic in it's depth, "More" is the great story of boy meets girl that goes astray. If it weren't for the nudity and obvious drug enjoyment I would recommend it for adolescents. Yet it has an important moral.

drug culture psycho drama

A German freshman, Stefan hitch hikes to Paris during summer break werehe falls for a mysterious young woman he meets in the Paris freakscene. He then follows her in the famous isle of Ibiza, the hippiejoint were meets Wolf, a man who throws Hitler-Jugend knives, owns barsand hotels and keeps Estelle under his thumb with dope. The coupletries to escape Wolf, Stefan gets hooked with dope and jealousy forEstelle, who's groovy and a free spirit. Great photography and music, plot is quite usual for the period but it's not an exploitation kind ofmovie, cold and dramatic. The moral is quite strong (he was looking forthe sun...) but I would not say it's a film against drugs even it putsenphasy on drug use.

if you get the slight enjoyment out of pink Floyd's music you will lovethis movie. the score is completely pink Floyd and of course the drugelement plays a major part in this movie giving you the doubts aboutlife within the weakest moments. this movie also touches the heart withthe story about love and the people around you ... there is also a hugeconnection with the world around you with the environment of a personalisland.this thing tell me i need ten lines to sum up a movie but i amdone that is all you get that is why this movie is a 6.1 which is amajor upset to any movie with a score like this. take a look at requiemfor a dream and the fountain .... equally good scores for ourgeneration but overestimated
