Desperate to get a job, she finally gets an interview with Jerry (Jeff Goldblum) - who is desperate to hire a producer for the struggling show Daybreak. Becky accepts the job and it proves to be more difficult than even she might be able to handle. She has to fire the sexist co-host, then try to convince egotistical news reporter, Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford), to take the job, and then try and get him to actually do the job, properly. And she has to do this while falling for handsome Adam (Patrick Wilson), and trying to save the show from plummeting ratings. Will Becky be able to hold on to her dream job and her sanity?

McAdams plays her role exceptionally well: as the young actress on the verge of the big time, who can win the boy, tame the beast, flash her panties and make you smile without making you cringe, she is a natural.

Girl's Night Fun

I saw this in a pre-screening with a few girlfriends. I thought it waspredictable and they pushed the limits with the swearing just a little,to the point of it being distracting from the film itself, almost likethey were just trying to push the envelope of PG-13 . So that's mostlythe negative. On the positive - there were some very funny parts that had us alllaughing as a group and Rachel McAdams is always fun to watch - I adoreher! The cast line up was great - I think Harrison Ford and DianeKeaton are a great pair, especially with their relationship in thisfilm. It was a great Girl's Night film, some guys may even enjoy it. I wouldsay it was better than Maid of Honor or Failure to Launch, perhaps on apar with First Kiss or 27 Dresses...It's very typical and alike all theothers of it's genre, so it's entertaining if you're into it. Andultimately it comes down to personal preference. One goof I noticed a lot - and it's just who I am to notice. There werea few scenes that I could TELL had been spliced together over a fewtakes - strictly because Rachels hair was different in each one...likeher bangs were swept to the side and pinned better in one shot thananother, but then it would come back around to her and they'd be looseagain...or her hair was up higher and then lower and then back uphigher again...that sort of thing. Not a huge deal, didn't detract forme or anything, but I rather enjoy spotting those types of things. Itwasn't anything like in Conspiracy Theory where he has the hat on, thenoff, then on again on the bus...or anything...just a hair difference.

All Star Cast

I never have time to go to the movies these days with my busy schedule. I usually enjoy the comfort of my home and refuse to pay the ridiculus prices at the theaters. I promised my wife I would take her to the movies when "Morning Glory" came out. My wife loves Rachel McAdams, ever since she made "The Notebook". I was expecting to be bored and asleep by the first half hour. I was surprised that I was really getting into this movie. I laughed at the poor anchorman who is put through hell to boost ratings. I also found myself enjoying Harrison Ford's character. Nobody plays a better grouch then Ford. I loved Rachel McAdam's characters spunk and refusal to give up. I'm surprised by many reviewers hating that about this character. I don't understand why everyone expects dedicated workers to be unpleasent people. I am always joking around and having a good time. I put in over 14 hours of work a day and seldom get enough sleep. I work 7 days a week sometimes. I can relate with this character. Just because you put in a ton of hours of work doesn't mean you have to be a social outcast. If you like Harrison Ford, Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, or any of the other actors in this film. You are going to love them in this film. It is a funny film with great actors. I would watch this movie again and knowing my wife she will probably buy the dvd when it comes out.

The primary reason to see this thinly-written comedy about a morning news show is to see Rachel McAdams carry her first film.

The Good, the Bad and the Pretty

The Good: the plot about an up-and-coming young professional woman with "moxie", working with the old stick-in-the-muds isn't bad, and it's very upbeat in the end. Other young professionals struggling to find a career in the working world, amongst the old-guard who have a guaranteed job, may find this compelling. The part where Rachel McAdams starts putting the morning show cast in adventurous and dangerous situations, for ratings, is actually pretty funny. The Bad: (1) A very adultish PG-13 with lots of vulgar language; which makes it more a "soft R" for adults than a movie for teens. The F word used several times and several near-times (were they going for an R or just wanting to push the edge of the PG-13 category?), some nasty vulgar sexual and scatalogical references by Harrison Ford's crusty old pompous character, calling people a**hole, saying "suck ##" etc. So if you're an adult and want to watch it with other adults, that's fine, but I'd advise not to watch it with your 13 year old. (2) The title. "Morning Glory" seems like a Sunday or Christian or at least an innocent kind of phrase. In reality there's a lot of worldly vulgarity and jerkiness in this movie that's not at all what the title might suggest(see #1). (3) Annoyance factor: some people might get annoyed by McAdams' frenetic energy throughout. Though it's a personal preference, many might think she's a little too hyped up in this movie. (4) Her "romantic" relationship with Patrick Wilson is not developed at all, to the point that one thinks, why is it even in there? They just have dinner (they say, but you have to take their word for it because it's not even shown) and jump into the sack. Is that par for the course these days for twenty-somethings? Her friendship/work relationship with Harrison's character is really the focus of the story, but that's not romantic, and so this couldn't really be called a romantic comedy! The pretty ...... Rachel McAdams of course. Radiant actually, if you like to stare at pretty, high-energy women in their prime beauty who smile a lot. (Great dimples!) Actually, Dianne Keaton also has a great, radiant smile for someone twice McAdam's age. But McAdams really shines, and you can see that the director goes out of his way to film her beauty often, whether walking fast in stylish slit skirts or running in high heels. So once again, some might see this movie as a fluffy plot vehicle to display Ms. McAdams personal charisma, beauty and charm. And certainly compared to Harrison Ford's crotchety, vulgar and annoying sourness as a foil.

Rainy day movie

A great little film for a rainy day. Fun storyline and if you are ahardworking person and find yourself being fired this film is for you. It's a great little pick you up type of movie, the best person for thejob gets fired and hired elsewhere and saves the day so to speak.Females you will enjoy this. The acting is great as are the top cast ofactors. Some really witty banter within the lines. Well written greatlittle storyline. A little different to most, I first thought it was aromantic comedy but its not about the romance more about how life canthrow you a curve ball and how to change your plan of attack. A reallynice little movie.

Kenneth Turan (14 May 2012)

McAdams' performance is worth the price of admission, but a resolution as satisfying as her work is not to be found.

Nell Minow (14 May 2012)

In every way the heart of the story is McAdams. She is a wonder, lit from within and utterly captivating.

What a Waste of Talent

There aren't a whole lot of movies set in the behind the camera TV-world, so I really look forward to them when they are released. I have a degree in broadcasting, and love stories of those in the field. Morning Glory, the latest "news-movie" to be released, debates the question of how much "bran" (hard news stories) vs. "donuts" (fluff pieces) should be shown during a national morning news show. The film has an all-star cast led by Rachel McAdams (The Time Traveler's Wife, Red Eye) who plays 28 year-old Becky. Down on her luck and recently fired, she takes the only job she can get working for the low-rated Day Break news show. It's a program that wants to be like The Today Show, but cannot keep up to that pace of professionalism. Through a couple clever (or stupid) turns, she convinces a legendary reporter, Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford), to join the other resident host Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton) after the firing of another host (Modern Family's Ty Burrell). The two veteran hosts don't get along - fighting over everything thrown at them including who says "goodbye" as the show closes. For poor Becky it's a nightmare - and the show doesn't improve. It will be cancelled unless something magical can happen in the six weeks they have left. You see where this is going.Ironically enough, this okay-but-disappointing film suffers from the very problem it's well-aware of - there is nowhere near enough "bran". This is a happy little movie that is too afraid to throw any real conflict into the mix. Every problem is solved with a smile, every fight is stopped with a hug - it's just too much. There are people who will probably love it for it's tidy little story-lines and unrealistic resolutions, but I am not one of them. While there were some genuine laughs, there was just too much stupidity for me to ultimately suggest seeing this movie.

What's the story Morning Glory?

I adore Rachel McAdams, which is why I'm not going to be as harsh onthis film as I should be. I will watch anything she is in. MorningGlory works, for the most part, if anyone had been cast in the McAdamsrole, I probably wouldn't have liked it as much as I do, which isn'tthat much to begin with.McAdams plays a recently fired television producer who goes looking fora new job and lands the role of working on the low rated morning talkshot, Morning Glory. Jeff Goldblum, who should get more roles thesedays, hires her. Ty Burrell of Modern Family fame works on the showwith Diane Keaton. his ego gets in his way and he's quickly fired, leaving an open spot which is given to a hesitant Harrison Ford. Canthese new changes save the show, or make it worse?I forgot to mention that Patrick Wilson is in the movie because hischaracter is basically useless. He's there for the romantic exchangethat is needed in comedies these days which are targeted towards women.Another mistake for the film is Diane Keaton and how underused she is.The film seems to want to focus more on the McAdams/Ford relationshipand Keaton is sort of left in the dust. I think the film would haveworked more if she were more central to the conflicts, instead of thejealous banter between her and Ford all the time. You've seen this film before, which is always the case, right? Aworkaholic must learn to live life a little. Ford, who plays acurmudgeon of a character sees himself in McAdams. He will be nice toher one second and try to get her to steer away from that workaholicpath, but in the next he'll go right back to being an ass. For what it's worth, the film will leave you with a smile on your face.It works on a basic level. If you don't expect much from this one, you'll more than likely come away happy. Nowhere near a perfect movie, but far from a terrible one too. McAdams is sweet and lovable, from anobjective point of view. Ford is the legend, he plays that part up welland as I said before, Keaton is just underused too much to really makean impression. Morning Glory might be the cure for a moody person.

Owen Gleiberman (04 May 2012)

Ford is still a magnetic hunk of gray-granite movie star, and in Morning Glory, he finds a way to trick up his deadly somber, shifting-quicksand delivery into a shrewd and amusing acting style.

Linda Cook (03 May 2012)

Becky is cute, entirely too conversational and consumed by her career. And, as portrayed by the equally adorable Rachel McAdams in 'Morning Glory,' she is funny, sweet and endearing.

socrates99 (03 May 2012)

IMDb flubs it again by being overly and unnecessarily harsh

Men spend a lot of time wondering about women. We know there are a lotof perky, optimistic women out there surviving despite the odds, and itseems a little unreal. But it's not an illusion, they really exist. The movies have paid homage to them for a long time now but it stillcan evoke wonder and surprise whenever that tribute is accomplishedwith style and verve as here. Rachel McAdams does her gender proud asthe energetic determined career woman that the title refers to. I knowI've seen at least a half-dozen similar movies, but for the life of me,I couldn't remember one after watching her unforgettable performance. She's a joy to watch and as a guy I can't help being attracted to hereven through the hands-off medium of film. But Harrison Ford's performance was probably my favorite part of thismovie. This aging action hero pulls off a portrait of a pompous anchorthat's irresistible and key to the whole film.I lost the coin flip with my wife (would have preferred to seeUnstoppable) but I don't regret spending an afternoon in New York withentertaining people and laughing quite a lot actually.

Chris Vognar (02 May 2012)

A Hollywood movie doesn't need to serve as media criticism. But don't serve yesterday's news, pretend to treat it as vital and then turn it into a mere bauble.

David Stratton (26 April 2012)

Rachel McAdams just seizes this film and goes with it and tends to leave everybody else in her wake a little bit because she's such a force -- such a potent force.

Inspiring, Rich and Entertaining

The first surprise of this movie is that it is not really a romanticcomedy; it is a comedy with some romance in it. The movie is about therise of a young television producer's career (Rachel MccAdams) and thesetting of the career of a news anchor from an earlier generation(Harrison Ford). The clash of their two worlds is hilarious, but thewriter also supports the comedy with just enough back story andcharacter growth to make you care how it turns out for both of them.Comparisons to Working Girl and Devil Wears Prada are tempting, asthere are so few women's career movies to choose from, but MorningGlory is not like either of those movies. Both of the other movies arefairy tales where the antagonist is an evil witch and the heroine andinnocent must overcome or escape the evil female executive. MorningGlory is less dramatic, and therefore more satisfying and relevant tomodern career women (and men). The struggle is with a system that isnot evil, just difficult and unforgiving.McAdam's character, Becky, takes on the challenges of her career withenergy and courage and the hero's most essential characteristic-perseverance. Very delighted that her love interest, played by PatrickWilson, is supportive of her career and ambitions!!!! (And he isgorgeous- could have used a few more shirts-off scenes there lol).Great actors like Jeff Goldblum, Daine Keaton and cameos by somefamiliar network faces attest to the high quality and attention todetail of the film.Becky is sure to inspire young career women and Morning Glory is sureto lift your spirits.

Bill Weber (24 April 2012)

Best-case fallout from this joyless TV-land lemon: Harrison Ford is driven into retirement, Diane Keaton gets a morning show.

Kimberly Gadette (23 April 2012)

The film is unique in its revisionary take on the rom-com - it's not love, but love of career. As well as Ford's legendary anchorman, glowering down on info-tainment from a Cronkite-ian cloud of disdain.

Daniel Hubschman (21 April 2012)

Morning Glory doesn't reinvent the wheel, but takes it for a pleasant spin around town

Fluffy

Morning Glory isn't a movie that pretends to be great cinema, and itshouldn't be judged as if it is. It's entertainment in a sort of ChickFlick way and is in my opinion a modest success in that genre.Having said that, it's also a disappointment in some way: the basicidea around which the film is constructed is ripe with comedicopportunities, but unfortunately little is made of many of them. Thefirst thirty minutes drags along painfully slowly and it's only duringthe last half that the writers seem to have got into their stride andbegun to mine the situations for, if not gold, at least base metal. The least believable thing is the character of Becky, as played byRachel McAdams. Hyperactive and naive, can we really accept that majornetworks would have producers like this on their staff? Then there'sMike Pomeroy, the Grumpy Old Man who won't let anyone forget his warcorrespondent persona: Harrison Ford plays him with such sneeringoveracting he loses credibility. Diane Keaton is by far the best of thetrio that make up the kernel of the movie: over the top but in a waythat is meant to be.The rest of the cast are probably the best of the players here, withsome nicely judged performances.Inside looks at TV shows going out live always produce a frisson in theviewer, and this movie is no different. the near-panic when thingsleave the rails, the personal vendettas and hates, and the rush to meetschedules is the meat of the film. Some genuine belly laughs come outof the script - it's just that there are too few of them - too manymissed opportunities - to persuade me to give this an 8 or 9.And a personal hobby horse: like so many movies in the last few years, the sound engineers are being allowed to get away with murdering thetracks. Music can enhance a film's mood but it has to be donethoughtfully and not, as in this case, so aggressively that itintrudes. Dialogue that is incomprehensible because of the volume ofthe score isn't dialogue at all, and even talk-free scenes are ruinedby over-loud music. I suspect that this is partly due to the surroundsound systems, producing (for the audience in the rear rows) a"curtain" of sound in the mid-speakers that drowns out the actor'sspeech on the screen speakers, Someone needs to listen to thesoundtracks in a movie theatre and not just in the cutting room.Anyway, a reasonably entertaining hour and a half, if a taddisappointing that more hasn't been made of the situations.
