I have a 7 year old daughter, and we pretty much go to see every kid movie that comes out. I get a little tired of always seeing "cartoon" movies, so when a movie comes out that has real actors in it--I get excited to see it. This movie was so much fun to see. We all laughed out loud and it was a nice, fast paced movie. Jim Carrey is usually hit or miss in his movies, but I really liked him in this one. My daughter received the DVD for Christmas and we are watching this movie over and over again! If you are looking for a sweet, wholesome, good movie for the whole family---this is it!!!

It is not awesome but it is a good comedy movie, we enjoyed it..As always Jim Carrey's performance is very good in this movie..The penguins are so cute..I want to have them in my house :) Honestly we couldn't understandthese penguins real or not..Actually we read that -Jim Carrey said the penguins are real- ..But still we cant believe that, it is amazing..The animal cant act professionally like that.If you watch this movie you wont be bored and I think you will enjoyit...

Unfortunately, I was babysitting my young cousins, and I wanted towatch a movie because there was nothing else to do. I searched throughthe titles and found "X-Men: First Class", "The Hangover Part II" and"Penguins". I decided to watch "Penguins", mostly because I hate teenmovies and soap operas. Guess what? I now hate movies about talking CGIanimals.I have to admit, the first few minutes were okay. Bruckheimer seemed towant to put in a few of his trademark "chase scenes", which caused alittle entertainment. Also, Maxwell Perry Cotton appeared, so I wascontent. It started going down hill (well, further down hill) when one of thecharacters has a dream sequence about talking Penguins. After that, the'quality' of the movie became so bad that I didn't know whether thewhole thing was still a dream sequence, or whether I was dreaming - itmade that much sense (incidentally, I had my first sip of beer thatnight, so I made have been unexpectedly drunk, though I doubt it).Anyway, terrible, unfunny movie, 3/10.

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) This movie was good and the best thing about was that I could watch it as many times as I wanted.

The best parts of the movie are Jim Carey's assistant and the penguins. My 4 year old loves animals and thought that she'd love it. But, it was just a little dull- at least that was my impression when she asked me in the middle of the movie if we could leave to go shopping. At least Jim Carey didn't overact in this simple story.

Tom Popper grew up having very little interaction with his father whowas off exploring the world. When he grows up he spends most of time on his work and ignores hischildren. One day his father sends him an unusual gift: six penguins.Popper can't help but wonder why his father would send him penguins. Hetries to get rid of them. But when his children and ex-wife show up to celebrate his son'sbirthday, the kids are taken with the penguins. And Popper finally gets to connect with his kids and his worksuffers...I really have no idea why this film bombed so badly. It's quite areturn to form for the actor, after making lot of dark movies whichpossibly turned his audience away. This does reminds me heavily though of Liar, Liar. it basically has thesame premise, nut a different macguffin that changes his ways.In both films he is distant with his child/children because of work, and it's obvious that the wife still fancies him despite going out withthe comedy boyfriend. That film worked, but was more slapstick, here the slapstick is leftpurely to the CGI penguins, and Carrey plays more of a straight man inthis. The penguins are hilarious, if sometimes blatant CGI, and the familyedge isn't as sickly sweet as you'd expect.Angela Lansbury turns up as a kind of fairy godmother who makes Carreyappreciate family etc. It's great family fun, and with the exception of the secretary who sayswords with the same letter, all the cast are great.Forget the reviews and the box office. If you like late ninetiesCarrey, this is for you.

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins (Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I am typically not a Jim Carrey fan. Generally I find him dry and uninspired but I was pleasantly surprised. This movie was funny, original and had some really good scenes. It was perfect for our 5 year old and his parents. A good way to spend 2 hours.

I went and saw this one on the big screen (daughter picked movie to watch) she is 5 yr old and loved this movie. I thought it was pretty good. I think it was lacking a bit.. for Jim Carrey I expected a lot better. It was cute, it was clean/fun, and I would watch it again. I will buy it because my lil one is asking for it.,. but will wait for the price to drop. For me it was better then some but not as good as others. Don't get this movie expecting extreme laughs. More like a light-hearted "haha"

Jim Carrey's career has in many ways mirrored that of Eddie Murphy. Intheir early days, both had distinctive styles of their own  Murphy wasfast-talking, foul-mouthed, vulgar and very funny; Carrey was a manicand energetic physical comedian like one of the Three Stooges onsteroids. They were both at their best in those early years. Theircomedy was effective and the films they made were usually enjoyable andfunny. Then, for reasons best known to themselves, both men settled fora niche in that most insipid and cloying of genres  the mainstreamHollywood family comedy. From time to time, both men escape from theconstraints of this self-imposed exile  check out Murphy in Bowfinger, for example, or Carrey in The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Âand we get a wonderful reminder of what they're capable of. But all toooften, both men slip back into "Hollywood Family Comedy Hell", wheretheir talents are wasted on cinematic silliness like Mr Popper'sPenguins. This Jim Carrey vehicle is lame and predictable for itsduration, pandering solely for children below the age of 10.Tom Popper (Jim Carrey) is a successful businessman who treats everyonearound him with frosty disregard. As a child, he was neglected by hisfather who spent most of his time gallivanting around the world insearch of animals. As an adult, Popper now treats his own kids Âdaughter Janie (Madeline Carroll) and son Billy (Maxwell Perry Cotton) with the same dismissive indifference. One day he receives word thathis father has died in some God-forsaken corner of the world, andshortly afterwards Popper inherits a number of penguins. Initially hewants to be rid of them but soon he discovers that he actually caresfor the penguins, loves them even, and before long he finds himselfbecoming a better person thanks to the effect the penguins have on hislife. His relationship with his kids grows, and he even starts torekindle a romance with his ex-wife Amanda (Carla Gugino). But asalways things don't run smoothly, and Popper ends up having to save hispenguins from a nasty zoo-keeper while keeping alive a preciousbusiness deal with cranky old heiress Mrs Van Gundy (Angela Lansbury). This isn't hugely different from Carrey's earlier offering Liar, Liar.Once again, a single-minded and neglectful father gets a shot at savinghis marriage and rebuilding his relationship with his kids thanks toextraordinary circumstances. But where that film had a degree of manicenergy, this one merely offers sentimental schmaltz. Mr. Popper'sPenguins is not a total loss by any means, with some amusing momentsand good special effects. It's just that the film doesn't really hangtogether as a whole, alternating too often between the disappointinglypredictable and the excessively juvenile. In fact, the penguins haveall the best moments  if it wasn't for them, this would be a very long94 minutes indeed.

This is the kind of film that Hollywood has been making for decades. The same morals, the same hijinks, the same problems and solutions andalmost the same type of lead actor. I was dragged into this film by mywife because we were close to the theater and had time to kill. An hourand a half to possibly enjoy before supper. I could have gone to anystore that sells dvds, looked up a film about a family, problems withthe kids and some kind of animal, and it would have been the same. Itdoes have a few laughs, but don't they all. The story has been so overdone that everything becomes yawn inducing predictability. Never a bigfan of Jim Carey and this proves why. He's just an one speed actor. Iam urging all the parents willing to take the kids to see this, pay ababysitter to take care of them and go with them to see this, and yougo and look for a more interesting unpredictable film.

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins (Amazon Instant Video) Thank you for shipping our "Mr. Popper's Penguins" dvd so quickly! We were pleased with the price and the delivery time, as well. The movie was funny because we're Jim Carrey fans, and as we often enjoy movies about animals, we found the penguins to be completely charming! Some of the scenes used cg images for the penguin tricks (e.g. the dance scene) but most of the movie was actual footage of trained penguins. A great movie for the whole family, we sure appreciated the speedy service in which it was delivered to our doorstep! Thank you!

Not since Ace Ventura has Jim Carrey played opposite animals, but hedoes just that- next to six gentoo penguins to be exact- in thiscontemporary adaptation of the 1938 classic children's book by Richardand Florence Atwater. The setting has been updated to modern-day NewYork, but the premise of a businessman called Mr. Popper who inheritssix penguins remains largely similar. Rather than an eccentricrelative, the inheritance here instead comes from Mr. Popper's father,a globetrotter who has never been around for much of his son's life. And as formula would have it, Mr. Popper has also not been much of afather to his two children- a teenage daughter Janie (Madeline Carroll)and a young son Billy (Maxwell Perry Cotton). He is also separated fromhis wife Amanda (Carla Gugino), choosing to devote his time to hisreal- estate job in an effort to climb up the echelons of the company.Again, as formula would have it, Mr. Popper receives his father'sinheritance just when he is one deal short of joining the firm as apartner- the clincher an iconic Tavern on the Green restaurant inCentral Park owned by a feisty old woman Mrs. Van Gundy (AngelaLansbury). The untimely gift however becomes a blessing in disguise, a tool if youwill, for Mr. Popper to acquaint himself with his children, especiallyBilly who can't seem to get enough of the Subarctic flightless birds. He soon develops a change of heart- and instead of devising ways to getrid of them, starts to learn on how best to take care of them, evengoing to the extent of turning his house into a winter wonderland fortheir comfort. The rest of the plot unfolds pretty much as you'd expectit to, right down to its denouement where Mr. Popper's personal andprofessional life collide. Indeed, no less than three writers (Sean Anders, John Morris and JohnStern) worked on the screenplay, but there is little originality intheir adaptation. Even the villain of the movie, the New York Zooofficial Nat Jones (Clark Gregg buying time before next summer's TheAvengers) seems no more than a perfunctory character introduced tobring the movie to some kind of a climax. Yet the fact that the filmremains surprisingly entertaining despite their middling script is atestament to Jim Carrey's comedic talents.Carrey is a master of slapstick and he uses his flair for physicalcomedy to great effect here. Much of the fun comes from watching Carreyinteract with the six penguins, each one of them given a name whichrepresents their behavioural inclinations. Carrey's initialexasperation with the six new occupants of his swanky New York Cityapartment is a hoot to watch, and his eventual bonding with the birdsis equally hilarious- Carrey demonstrating once again that he is easilyone of the most physically expressive comedians in Hollywood. He also has a great sense of comedic timing, especially telling in hiswise-cracking delivery. The fast-talking shtick recalls his earlier AceVentura days, and his perfectly-timed, deadpan delivery of punch-linessuch as this- "Somewhere out there, there's a giant sentence missing anending" when looking at an art piece resembling a large round dot inthe Guggenheim Museum- shows that he has lost none of that Midas touch.Yes, Carrey is through and through a consummate comedian, and hisuproarious performance is truly entertaining.Of course, the kids will inevitably be more enthralled by theflightless sextet- the squawky Loudy, the hugger Lovey, the farterStinky, the clumsy Nimrod, the biter Bitey and the leader of the packCaptain- and director Mark Waters (better known for his much lessCGI-ed comedies Mean Girls and Freaky Friday) does a fantastic jobcombining the real animals with CGI. Waters also milks what cutepotential there is within the penguins and their respectivecharacteristics to largely charming effect, and this is a movie parentscan rest assured that the kids will love.As is typical of such fare, there is a final message about theimportance of staying together as family- although it isn't asheartfelt as it should be, thanks to the lacklustre plotting.Nevertheless, there is great family fun to be had here- the kids withthe lovable and even irresistible penguins, and the adults with therubber-faced Jim Carrey back in Ace Ventura-mode- and perhaps there isall one should ask of a family-friendly comedy like this. - www.moviexclusive.com

I saw this at the movie theatre and adored it. The whole family loved it. It is about when a guy (Jim Carrey) gets a bunch of penguins and they ransack his house and they put tons of ice in his house to inhabit in. Then later in the movie he kidnaps them from the zoo when someone puts them there.

'Mr. Popper's Penguins' works primarily for one particular reason: JimCarrey. The Amazing Actor delivers a wonderful performance, that ishard not to love. The Greatest Actor Never Nominated for AnAcademy-Award, is the biggest merit of this recent film. 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' Synopsis: The life of a businessman begins tochange after he inherits six penguins, and as he transforms hisapartment into a winter wonderland, his professional side starts tounravel.'Mr. Popper's Penguins', based on the children's book of the same name, starts well, slips in the middle, but culminates ably. The narrative &the characters appeal, so do the adorable Penguins. However, thewriting material isn't water-tight & has loose-ends. But, keeping inmind, that this film is meant for children, it gets it right, to anextend.Mark Waters Directs this Family-Comedy, passably. Cinematography isordinary. Editing & Art Design, are fine. CG are eye-filling. Performance-Wise: It's Carrey all the way. As Mr.Popper, the legendaryactor delivers a wonderful performance from start to end. Carla Guginois as usual. Madeline Carroll & Maxwell Perry Cotton are nice. Otherslend the required support. On the whole, 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' works because of Mr.Popper!Carrey Shines, Yet Again!

I took my 80-year old Dad, and he said he doesn't know when he has laughed as much. From start to finish, the movie has a couple of delightful storylines. A great movie for kids and adults alike, and yet not animated! I loved it!

Look, it can't be denied: penguins are adorable. With that in mind, it's quite understandable why there have been so many films in recent years, from documentaries to CGI-animated tales, centered around our most cuddly, flightless friends. And, of course, adaptations of books are a Hollywood favorite as well, which brings us to Mr. Popper's Penguins. Jim Carrey stars as the titular Mr. Popper, a divorced realtor whose globetrotting father leaves him with crates full of penguins upon his death. Popper decides not to turn the penguins over to the zoo when he observes how much his children love them, and in caring for his new feathered friends, he not only mends his personal relationships, but also succeeds in landing an important and sentimental real estate deal. Based on a children's book from 1938, Mr. Popper's Penguins is pretty standard stuff, which means the plot points are predictable, and there are enough "aww shucks" moments for the kids. The film, however, fails to transcend cliché and become something more.

Got pulled to the movie by my son after he watched the trailer of Carrey dancing with penguins. Well, it is just that 15 sec. piece he enjoyed. Overall, the movie was lame.
