This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) I can hardly wait for the next installment of this series. Well maybe it's the end of the story but I wondering what else may come.

He's baaaaaaaack! The first PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movie introduced Johnny Depp to a much, much wider audience; as Captain Jack Sparrow, he was a wonder, cracking wise and kicking butt (often at the same time). CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL remains a family-friendly action/adventure classic. It's sequels...eh.ON STRANGER TIDES makes no sense. Okay? Should this surprise you...you're in the wrong genre, my friend. It's big and bold (though not nearly as much as its two predecessors, thank God), features some mediocre acting (Depp and Geoffrey Rush remain strong, and Ian McShane is fantastic even though his character is crudely drawn), a few genuine laughs, a few false laughs, a few failed bits of choreography, and a whole lot of fun. Maybe not as much fun as back at the beginning, when all of this was new, but you'll still enjoy yourself...probably.The plot? Something to do with Blackbeard (McShane), his daughter (Penelope Cruz; finally, a strong female character, or at least a strong female actress); Captain Barbosa (Rush) as a British emissary; a shirtless priest who falls in love with a mermaid (you think I'm joking, but I'm not); the fountain of youth; and a bunch of good pirates and evil British guys. Oh, and Keith Richards. Rock on.If I sound sarcastic, it's because you just can't take this movie seriously, not even on its own terms. But trust me: ON STRANGER TIDES is, at the very least, a fun movie (note the three stars). Jack Sparrow is getting rather tired (I would much rather watch the first film on repeat), but Depp still has enough charisma to breathe a little bit more life into him. If nothing else, the visuals remain spectacular, the plot interesting enough for us to forgive the fact that it is so full of holes an elephant could waltz right through it, and the pirates still delightfully funny (I'd love to see the "realistic" version of this film...well, maybe not). It could stand to be a little darker and scarier (the mermaid premise, as awful as it originally comes across, actually had some promise), but we're willing to settle for what it is. And that, at least, is worth a viewing or two.

I had low expectations but was rewarded with all you could get from amovie like that - a perfect 7 star entertainment!I wasn't a big fan of the predecessors, because I was probablyexpecting them to be more like Pirates of the Caribbean: On StrangerTides. Fun entertainment with a simple yet interesting plot, includinggood jokes, beautiful actresses and actors portraying pleasantlycaricatured characters as well as fascinating sets and action. Compared to the other movies with dozens of unfinished subplots, annoyingly stupid supernatural characters combined with cgi all overthe place, main plots that are both boring and confusing (without thepositive effect some complexity can have), this was brilliant. You will have no, or at least believe you don't have, long lastingscenes of boring cgi covering 90% of the screen - like giant octopusesor eternal fights with indestructible skeletons, but instead somemermaids with character. Shortening might have been possible, but allyou want from a film like that is to lure you into another world for awhile - why not for a bit longer?

Here's a franchise that definitely needs to be put to bed and fast.Directed by Rob Marshall, "Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Tides"is mostly a bore and more rehash and retread than anything else. Deppand Rush are back at it as their characters, but the charactersthemselves have completely worn out their welcome. The story isover-long, and has a couple of fairly interesting sequences - one beingDepp's initial escape from the King of England, and two a Mermaid"battle", but these last only a scant 20 min of the bloated 130 minruntime. I fast-forwarded through a good chunk of this movie. You'dthink they'd figure it out that a movie needs a lot more than a newcharacter and quest for it to be worth your viewing time. Give it amiss.

This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) Just a mix of the first three. The 3 second blurb of the monkey was the best part. Wait til it is on sale for $5.00.

The worst of the lot in my opinion. Even though they tried to cram asmany things as possible into the film, I was completely and utterlybored, leading me to fall asleep at one point. It was like they took all the dull parts from 2 and 3 and mashed themall together to create this film. The script was very poor, Depp was not funny, more irritating.Blackbeard is supposed to be a pirate that all pirates fear, I sawnothing of this, I just saw a man pointing his sword a lot.Another thing that really bugged me, is the fact that pretty much allthe fight scenes happened at night. There are probably 3 occasionswhere this film is set in the daytime which leads to you not being ableto see much at all, I just don't see the point.Disney should have called it a day after Curse of the Black Pearl as ithas all gone down hill from there. I'm really annoyed that I wasted mymoney on this film, if this film spawns another trilogy then it will bea sad day, I am sick of money grabbing awful films.

Before I start let me say this: First, I loved the Pirates films, loved them. My wife and I were waiting so long for this fourth movie to come out, to see Capt. Jack strike out on his own. Second, I think that Ian McShane is one of the best actors our time and so is Johnny Depp. Now that I have said that....I had to wait at least this long to post a review because I didn't even want to think about this movie again. The good news? The film is so terrible and forgettable that it would make an awesome Mystery Science Theater 3000 flick. Fountain of Youth? Sounds great! It is as though they didn't think beyond a simple story board. Get a villain whose name would sound familiar to anyone that ever saw a History Channel program about "The Real Pirates Of The Caribbean". Then you get a few familiar faces from the franchise's past (except some of the best ones). You throw in more mannerisms for Capt. Jack, and don't forget a few one-liners. Add love interest, supernatural powers for the villain, a new spooky ship, and then have a few characters in the background that you would have found more interesting if only the writers had given them more attention (the missionary and the mermaid story). Honestly? I would have been happy to watch and entire movie about the mermaid and the holy man! They killed Capt. Jack in the same way that they killed Indiana Jones. My wife is a Pirates fanatic and she was crestfallen and completely disappointed. There were so many points in the movie where I looked around the theater at people's expressions feeling like the only sane person in a crazy world, but others were just as confused about why the movie was so awful as I was. I love the character of Capt. Jack and he was robbed of his dignity and his place on my DVD shelf. All of this happened before, all this will happen again. Hollywood will make more bad movie sequels so long as they believe that they can make a buck. You ruined Pirates....happy now???????

This is entertainment. And this is what we go to the movies for. To be entertained. Not to mention of course, best Pirates Film Thus Far.Don't get me wrong, I loved all three of the fist films. And I would agree that I didn't feel like I was seeing POTC withoutcertain Characters in it.However, in terms of Liz's Character, a long with Will's character',their story line were finished. So, there is no need for them to appear in this film. And, despite them and their story not being in this film, it actuallymade it better. There is also no need for Character Development, because all of thereturning Characters have been developed during the last three films. So, what makes this film so great, other then what I have mentioned sofar? It has Great heart pounding, eye popping action.Great specialeffects, decent writing, with a decent plot, and extremely funny. You willlaugh your *** off during the first 20 mins or so, as well as duringcertain parts of the film as it goes a long.It also has excellentperformances from Penélope Cruz whom plays as Angelica, as well as IanMcShane whom plans as Blackbeard. I am not saying that the rest of thecast and crew don't give a great performance, I am just saying thatMcShane, and Cruz where excellent. And the best part is, we finally got to see Captain Jack Sparrow havinga little bit more of a spot light. And, again, don't get me wrong, Iabsolutely loved the first three. But, I kinda feel like they wheremostly about Bloom's and Knightley story, and without them in the way,we can get into more of a Pirate Tale.If this turns out to be a new trilogy, I will gladly go out to see thenext two films to follow.

This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) This by far is the worst Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The writing really stunk. Very good acting by Johnny Depp but he can't carry the movie alone. Wish i wouldn't have bought it!Fast shipping and Amazon prices are hard to beat though!

Movie is not so good!!! , Missing actions, and real pirates thrill :(and on top of it!! No black Perl in movie at all, except one stupidbottle ship...Johny acted well, but viewers need some exotic actress... just to keepmovie out of boring fantasy tale...Overall, sequel is not so good... Just a time pass, not something likea time to enjoy..I would rate 5/10... reason, 1) Story and scenes are not so capable tobind the viewers all the time... 2) Few logical blunders.... 3) toomuch heart touching romantic feelings are NOT a hit all the time. 4)Johny acted well till the end.. 5) I was keep on saying till last .. "ohh Man!!!mermaids werefreakishly beautiful...."Thanks.

Rob Marshall, the director of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Nine (2009),and most famously, the Oscar-winning Chicago (2002), takes over thedirectorial duties of Gore Verbinski in this fourth installment of thewildly popular Pirates of the Caribbean series. Some of the principlecast return with the addition of a new face, that of sultry Spanishactress Penelope Cruz, in this "more of the same" picture that willplease fans who seek familiarity, but frustrate those who think thatenough is enough. On Stranger Tides, as it is titled, follows Johnny Depp who repriseshis colorful role as Jack Sparrow on a journey to find the mythicalfountain of youth. Not surprisingly, a host of other characters, namelyBarbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and villain Blackbeard (Ian McShane) are alsoafter its magical healing powers. The adventure also sees Jack hookingup with old flame Angelica (Cruz) again as he becomes a pawn in a notso elaborate game to see who reaches the fountain of youth first.Slavishly sticking to the style and conventions of its prequels, OnStranger Tides is no breakthrough despite the change of director. For astart though, Marshall's film is a full half-hour shorter than itsdirect prequel At World's End (2007), and this works in favor of theattempt to sustain the viewer's interest while still retaining thesense of epicness associated with the series, which more or less is duein part to Hans Zimmer's rousing score. The action sequences are ordinary and not as exciting as expected, though a key act past the hour mark involving mermaids is at the veryleast interesting. The notion that mermaids are pretty girls withscales and fish tails who live under the sea is debunked in this film. Here they are seductive versions of human piranhas, desperate to luremen to their doom. One of them, named Syrena, is captured byBlackbeard's men because of a plot device, but is saved by a priestcalled Philip. Their relationship is surprisingly touching andwell-developed despite it being a minor "romantic" subplot. On Stranger Tides is an above average summer blockbuster that is stillwatchable. Depp, as always, pulls us into the picture with aconsistently hypnotic performance, though it must be said that thechemistry between him and Cruz is less sizzling than we would like itto be. The decision to offload key but tiresome characters from theprequels as played by Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley gives thefranchise a much needed facelift. In a nutshell, On Stranger Tides isone of those Hollywood movies that is not exactly bad, neither is itsomething that warrants a second look.GRADE: B- (7/10 or 3 stars)www.filmnomenon.blogspot.comAll rights reserved.

This one just didn't do it for me. This is one of those movies wherethe 3D was the best part about the movie. Jonny Depp was good and theacting wasn't all that bad. It was nice to see AL Capone from BoardWalk Empire in there as a different role. Mermaids were cool and theyentertained me enough to not completely close my eye lids. Some funnyparts, but over all the movie is not a movie I could watch twice. Itwas long at times, everyone was glad when it was over, and when themovie ended, there wasn't any applause from people like most Fridaynights of a new movie release. If your a die hard fan like me, youshould enjoy some old things mentioned from previous films and thecomedic genius of Johnny Depp, but this wasn't a good enough movie towatch again. I hope I was helpful and I hope ya take it for what it'sworth.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy... which should probably have stayed a trilogy. Gore Verbinski directed the original trilogy, but for reasons that defy understanding On Stranger Tides was put in the hands of Rob Marshall, a very talented director of musicals but one with no experience - and apparently no feel whatsoever - for action films. The differences are telling, and not in a good way. There are some good parts to On Stranger Tides, particularly an early scene where Jack Sparrow meets King George II (marvelously done by Richard Griffiths). But for the most part, as a film it resembles a ship caught in a storm, lurching this way and that in a barely controlled manner. Compared to the Gore Verbinski films, On Stranger Tides has a disjointed feel to it, with scene after scene feeling distinctly recycled, leaving the viewer with a sense of haven't-we-been-here-before? This is also hammered home by the Hans Zimmer score, half of which sounds like it was inserted without even the slightest changes from the earlier films. In a nutshell, the basic plot is Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) ends up being shanghaied by none other than Blackbeard (Ian McShane), arguably the most infamous pirate of all time, and his daughter, Angelica (Penelope Cruz), in a search for the legendary Fountain of Youth, pursued by former-pirate-now-privateer Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). There is a somewhat interesting romantic subplot involving a missionary (Sam Claflin) and a mermaid (Astrid Berges-Frisbey), but it's almost a distraction from everything else and not enough to make up for the lack of heart in the rest of the film. That said, the film lacks smoothness, scenes often change in a jarring manner, too many chase scenes going on far too long, and quite frankly, too much of Johnny Depp having to act in a vacuum. Given the acknowledged talent of most of the cast, one can only blame the director. Ian McShane's Blackbeard is about as terrifying as your average surly drunk in a bar. Penelope Cruz's Angelica has all the passion of a fashion plate stepping through a photo shoot. Even Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa and Kevin McNally's Gibbs feel like they're improvising most of the time, trying to remember how they did it the first time around. The film also suffers from the changes among the minor pirate characters. The comic pirate pair Pintel (Lee Arenberg) and Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) are completely absent from On Stranger Tides, a bizarre decision on someone's part, and their loss is keenly felt. A new character Scrum (Stephen Graham) has been added but is a pale and only mildly funny substitute. Another new character, credited only as Cabin Boy (appealingly played by fifteen-year-old Robbie Kay) had potential, but is largely wasted by being little to do except stand there and react. There are two fun cameos in the film, one by Keith Richards reprising his role as Captain Teague, Jack's father, and Judi Densch as an aristocratic lady Jack unexpectedly drops in on (literally) while making his escape from the king. And they have arguably the best single lines in the film, which I won't spoil for you here.On Stranger Tides is watchable, but only just, the kind of film you watch once and then largely forget. In truth, I can only recommend this for Johnny Depp/Jack Sparrow fans who want to see it all, even if the standards aren't up to the first three films.PS -- In spite of the title referencing Tim Powers' marvelous pirate fantasy novel On Stranger Tides, the film only borrows a few plot elements - Blackbeard, the Fountain of Youth, zombies, etc - from the novel and otherwise has little to do with it. I highly recommend tracking down the novel and reading it though if you enjoy a really good supernatural pirate yarn.

this is the fourth movie in the series, and the fifth are rumored it ison the way, do we see a sixth??... anyway this epic tale just drags onas usually. seems like they just made up the movie, as they went along.filling in the plot with silly theatrics and side-trackingsubplots(that we love of course!) so it ridiculous dragged out to2+hours. but at least i didn't fell a sleep half way through, like idid on the two other movies before this one... must have been becauseof penelope, the sexiest woman to roam the TV screen. so is it worthwatching 'yes'... because of sexy penelope and keith richards as thecoolest pirate ever(again!). but first bottle up with coke and popcorn, trust me you will need it.... if it rains outside it will be good to,and if you have one of those living room chair that have a toiletincluded, it will be a big plus. after all your in for a 2+hours haulof Disney goodness, you definitely don't want to miss a second of it..

This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I do not care what critics say, this franchise has been very good and funny. This is good too. Although, I admit with the loss of Orlando and Kiera, it was not as good and we had to start from scratch with the other characters...
good-decision (15 May 2012)
The movie lacks the "wow" moments of previous movies. It's completelylacking in imagination this time. In fact, at some points it was veryboring. I love Johnny Depp and he had some very funny lines in thismovie to keep it alive. Everyone else was acting as if they were boredor forcing it. The mermaids looked gorgeous but for some reason, theone that acted the major part as a mermaid was the one with the leastbeauty of them all. The twists in the plot ended right were they beganand were completely needless/useless. If you are a die-hard Depp fan, watch it. If you love the effect, the fantasy, the adventure, theimagination that filled the first 3 POTC, skip skip skip away... Someof the few questions that really irritated me throughout the movie (allto do with the stupid writing I am afraid) are: - Why will the Spanishchase and scheme for the entire movie to find the Fountain of Youtheven though all they wanted to do was destroy "the pagan" monument? Isthis the best use of money they can think of? - Why did they not reallydecide if mermaids can live with or without water? (doh?), now she canwalk, now she can't. Now she needs water, now she doesn't. - When themermaid (who obviously has some healing powers and CAN live outsidewater) professes her love for the priest, why does she drown him to thedepth of the sea? Or does he have gills we haven't been told about? -Penelope is a gorgeous talented woman. But in this movie, she couldhave been anybody really. In fact, Zoe Saldana was way way moreimpressive even though she occupied way less screen time. - With suchan evil dad, who gives a heck if he is saved or not? Such a hatefulcharacter that nobody wanted him rescued nor cared if they found thefountain or not. - When the fountain was found, is this all theimagination they could come up with? Two columns and some algae? Well,Depp was great and the pop corn was good.

As I went recently to Disneyland with my nephews, we took the tour andthis movie is the same: dark, misty, with filthy pirates, great for theeyes but lacking of a story. This was actually my first Pirates movie i saw (and the last, i think)and was taken aback at the start with the characters. They seem to knoweach other but nothing is explained. The coming of Penelope is a waste because she does nothing here exceptwalking. If she was so pregnant, why cast her? The story of the youthfountain is a rip-off from the "Last Crusade".The character of Deep doesn't make me laugh. The only funny moment waswith the swinging ship and it's not enough.I even slept between the escape from London and the attack of themermaid: what's the fun of being in the hold of a ship by night? Atlast, Hook has better taste and as it's another Spielberg reference, you can understand the difference of levels and vision between the two.I chose Steven and those damn pirates have indeed robbed me of mymoney!

This review is from: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) Fun for the whole family. I am really glad DIsney has invested in these adventurous movies. It reminds me of the movies I grew up watching like "Swiss Family Robinson."

Just a short review, I watched this film for the first time last weekand was thoroughly disappointed, (not that I expected much), thecharacters were weak and many of the action scenes are straight out ofthe other three films. Jack Sparrow's character, although amusing attimes, has by now been well and truly worn out and he interacts poorlywith a host of other new characters that have been thrown into the mix,(amongst some old ones). The story is also poor and in no way links in with any of the othermovies so by the end of the film I was both bored and confused. Iwouldn't recommend it to any who haven't seen the previous filmsalthough I suppose it's worth seeing for a laugh... or two.
