When Blu, a domesticated macaw from small-town Minnesota, meets the fiercely independent Jewel, he takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro with this bird of his dreams.
Terry Roehrig II (23 May 2012)
G-rated cartoons are mainly for the kids. The writers try to put insome humor for the adults that are taking them to the theater or throwsome jokes that only they would understand in order to watch the DVDwith them at home. Unfortunately, Rio doesn't have a lot for the grownup kids, just plenty of silliness for the kiddies and that's not a badthing...it just makes it harder for the parents to sit down and watch. The movie starts (with absolutely zero warning and tested my ability tonot hit the off button) straight away into a musical number. Usuallywith most animated movies, that's one of my biggest gripes...unnecessary musical numbers, forced into the dialog where charactersjust break into song for no good reason than they just need a song putin so the producers can snag a Best Original Song nomination comeAcademy Award time. A macaw (Eisenberg) falls out of his tree whilstshaking his tail feathers and is caught by some smugglers and shippedoff to Moose Lake, Minnesota. A local girl, Linda (Mann) finds his box, accidentally thrown from a van, and decides to keep him, take care ofhim and name him Blu. Fast forward several years later and we see Lindaand Blu living their (somewhat pampered) lives in Moose Lake and is oneday, greeted by a man named Tulio (Santoro) claiming to be a birdexpert. He needs Blu and Linda to travel to Rio de Janeiro so that Blucan mate with the only other bird of Blu's species, a female blue macawnamed Jewel (Hathaway). Once there, Blu meets and makes nice with Jewelwhile Tulio and Linda do some sight-seeing in Rio. What can go wrong?Well, I'll tell you what can go wrong. Some bird smugglers can comealong and ruin your entire vacation. When Tulio and Linda find out thatBlu and Jewel have been bird-napped, it's off to the races to find outall the particulars.Rio is not a bad movie... it's just not all that entertaining. Yeah, sure, it's colorful and vivid, but that only holds my interest for solong. I need some more story and better dialog to thoroughly enjoy it.It's fine for the kids and it hits its target audience just fine, thesmall ones will be more than entertained. I would think the cut-off agefor Rio is about 10-years-old. I don't really see any kids older thanthat enjoying this movie. It's not like I totally hated Rio. I enjoyedJemaine Clement as Nigel, an extremely psychotic cockatoo who I'msurprised to find this side of a G-rated flick. I was kind of takenaback almost every time he was on screen and revelled in his deliciouscuckoo-ness, yes I even enjoyed his musical number, how about that?Maybe I'm just spoiled when it comes to animated productions because ofShrek, Toy Story and Despicable Me. I've seen what they can do and I'msorry, but Rio just doesn't have what it takes to compete with thelikes of these. Yes I am comparing it to other animated films, that'sbecause Rio doesn't have a wing to stand on (that's the kind of punsyou're in for least you decide to watch Rio). If it soundsunprofessional of me to do so, keep this in mind, I'm not aprofessional. This is just my personal opinion of a cartoon movie abouttalking monkeys, dogs and birds.More reviews at www.soveryterry.comFinal Grade: C+

Wow - first I have to say I am surprised at how many people slammed this movie! Lots of people saying how it was just for kids... well surprise surprise it is an animated kids movie! For those parents struggling to find a great, fun to look at and listen movie for the kids that has no profanity or inappropriate jokes, this is it!The vivid tale of a rare blue bird (blu) raise in captivity so doesn't know how to fly, goes to rio to meet the matching pair of rare blue bird to keep the species going. Very cute and as a mom, I was loving the rhythm and music myself! Rented it but will def buy it

As we know,Human's greed is stronger than others...Some people like to make some imaginary titles to attract audience'seyes, Carlos has done different. The story used to start from a penguin. But now, starting a love storywith extremely different living-style pair macaws in blue.It may make the big fun, according to the portal, the income is great. However,After the nearly 100 minute fun, I think I have to do somethingsince carlos mentions about the spix's. Also Carlos triggers somepeople's mind. Encouragement and remembering are still a big step forlots of people even the director! I think I am Ready to accept the realquest to make more fun.Carlos does the good task,Thank you.P.S: When I was a kid,I used to own two small birds in pure green andpure cyan as my pets.Real Case: A woman owns a macaw as her pet. One Day, a Person noticesthe odd, then the person likes to talk with her. She mentions about themacaw's health... Then the true story starts.Carlos takes the case to nearly rewrite the storyboard to make morereasonable

This review is from: Rio (DVD) This movie is as satisfying to the eye as to the funny bone. The story is well written and easy to follow, but the colors are what will blow you away!!! If you are lucky enough to have a 3D TV, you are twice blessed!

I saw "Rio" yesterday in Blu-ray with an Infocus 1080p projector in 130". The video quality is unbelievable!!! The movie is great too. Maybe the best made in this category. The Rio de Janeiro city is well represented but, of course, the great problems we have in Rio de Janeiro and in all the others great or small cities of my country Brasil (like cocaine, crack, guns, corruption) isn't showed in the movie. Well, it is to be a happy movie and full of hope. Great, great, great work by the brasilian citizen and director Carlos Saldanha and his crew.

This is a fabulous movie. I am 38 years old and was so excited when I found out this movie was coming out. I am owned by 5 parrots and so I am a bird lover. It is sad because this is truly what happens to parrots in the wild. They are caught by poachers and smuggled over to the United States. Most of them die before they even make it over the border because they are not fed any food, they are not given any water and they put as many parrots as they can in a very small space. If you watch this movie, also be aware that millions of wild parrots are killed each year for humans pleasure.

"Rio" it's a decent animated film for the whole family. It was directedby Carlos Saldanha (Who also co-directed the "Robots" and "Ice Age")Despite the immense amount of clichés and stereotypes that this moviehad (Remember that episode from The Simpsons, "Blame it on Lisa"?) Ienjoyed it: The animation is cute and colorful; personally I liked waymore the designs of the birds than the designs of the human beings thatjust seem quite bland and generic. The same goes for theirpersonalities: The birds were the most interesting (and funnier)characters from this movie, while all the humans (Including the mainvillain) were just boring, one-dimensional characters that were easilyforgettable at best. The voice acting from "Rio" was pretty good, and even when some of thejokes seem forced (Or borrowed from previous CGI films) the overallmovie feels okay, being watchable from beginning to end. And also, itwas much better than the "Ice Age" sequels.

This review is from: Rio (Blu-ray/ DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) This is a great movie and a wonderful collectable product. The only thing I didn't like was that the digital copy didn't work in my country.

I purchased this 3D Blu-Ray package before the August 30th release date at another retailer that has it as an exclusive. This review is based solely on the 3D Blu-Ray version since I didn't catch the movie in the theater. The 3D quality is excellent and much better than most of the 3D movies that are currently available. The CG animated animals and people of Rio de Janeiro come to life with added levels of depth and pop-out effects. The vibrant colors of the city and jungle landscapes match the outstanding quality of sound. The times when characters appear to come out of the TV isn't gimmicky or done solely for audience reaction. The 3D effects definitely add to the overall enjoyment of the movie. The sound quality is amazing and the musical sequences are spectacular. I took a risk by buying a 3D movie that I hadn't seen before and I'm not disappointed with this purchase. The package comes with the 3D Blu-Ray disc, 2D Blu-Ray disc, DVD disc, and the Digital Copy disc. It's also one of the compatible "Pocket Blu" movies which lets you watch the movie and some of the bonus features on your mobile device and/or computer. Overall, I highly recommend this for people of all ages.

This review is from: Rio (DVD) This was a great movie for my 3 year old grandson as well as the adults in the family. He plays the movie over and over dancing and singing to the lively music of Rio. The bright colorful scenery invites you to travel to Rio for carnival. Great animation of characters. This movie was very well done.

The director, Carlos Saldanha, collaborated on the "Ice Age" trilogy. What he has developed here has tons of atmosphere and, less helpfully, tons of over-plotted chaos disguised as a story.

This review is from: Rio (Blu-ray/ DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I have purchased the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo of Rio and was excited to be able to view the movie in a very crisp, vibrant, colorful high resolution of blu-ray only to find that PS3 would not play the blu-ray disk. I then went on to do some research and found out that I am not the only one having these issues. Don't get me wrong, the movie is great, once you can actually watch it. This review is based on the item, not the movie itself.

This review is from: Rio (DVD) My children really enjoyed the music and the colours of the movie. My husband and I watch a lot of kids movies, and this one is easy to repeat. The kids are fascinated with the dancing and often join in. This movie also was a starting point for our family talking about difficult issues like poaching, strangers, dangerous situations , being lost, etc.... All in all we LOVED this movie. !!!!!!!!!!

I bought this somewhere else because it was on sale, got it home and went to install it on my new ANDROID Tablet only to find out that the only choices to install are either through ipad or Windows Media Player. I tried to install with Windows Media Player and was able to get the movie on to my device, but it simply wouldn't play. I called the customer service department on the back of the package and apparently I'm not the only one who is having this problem with the download version of this movie for Android. Customer service said they would try and get an answer for me on how to get this movie to play on Android, but so far nothing. They said Fox is aware of this issue and there should be a fix by OCTOBER. But I need a fix NOW. I will update if I hear back and can get this thing to play on Android.Other than that, I would recommend. Besides the hiccup on the downlad version for Tablets etc, you also get the DVD and a Blu Ray version in this package. For that price, this was a steal.

This review is from: Rio (Blu-ray/ DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Purchased this DVD to entertain my grandchildren during a recent visit and it was entertaining for all viewers. Adults tend to dismiss animated movies as being strictly for "kids" but the voices, dancing, singing and gorgeous animation held the attention of "grown-ups" as well.
