Biographic movie of the witty, overachieving, hot-tempered Rudy Giuliani, spaning from his rising days as a New York district attorney in the early 1980s to his marriage to part-time actress Donna Hanover, to his candicies for mayor of New York City and his controversial methods to tackle the citys crime and urban problems, as well as his romance with his assistant Cristyne Lategano which lead to the failure of his marriage, to his battle with prostate cancer, all leading up to the terrible day of September 11, 2001 which Guiliani himself narrowly escaped death after suicide terrorists hijacked and crashed two passenger airliners into the twin World Trade Center towers leading to their collapse in which Guilianis toughness and spirited personality help calm the citys residents to face the chaos on that day which made him a national hero.

I haven't seen all the movies he's been in, but this is the best JamesWoodssince Citizen Cohen, I think. The movie itself is compelling and is told in flashback form from Ihaven'tseen all the movies he's been in, but this is the best James Woods sinceCitizen Cohen, I think. The movie itself is compelling and is told in flashback form fromSeptember11. It emphasis Giuliani's love for the law and for New YorkCity. As an American, it was hard to watch without having my tears jerked butthatyet, I had to watch. The performances by the other actors and actresses were all good too. Somepeople will say its a white wash but I felt it depicted Rudy Giuliani theman, his good side, his obsession with cleaning up NYC, hit temper, hismarital infidelities, the horror of finding out his father was oncearrestedand jailed for armed robbery. They don't come much better thenthis.Oh, I forgot, his love of opera. Its all in there.I hope there will be a DVD release.

It's too bad the talented Penelope Ann Miller was cast in thisgarbage! Her talent and acting ability should be used for muchbetter roles than this. As usual, Penelope is always outstanding,no matter what she is in but this role was sickening. Hope to seeher in better stuff than this in the future.

September the 11th 2001 was a day when I was ill with a really bad chestinflammation . I was having a cup of tea watching the end credits ofNEIGHBOURS when a BBC newsflash came up . I instantly thought The QueenMother had died untill the newsreader said two planes had crashed into eachof the twin towers of the WTC building and I spent the rest of the day witha shocked expression on my face as the events in New York unfolded . Theworld changed that day and not for the better RUDY : THE RUDY GIULIANI STORY is the first filmed dramatisation of theevents of 9/11 . It`s also a biopic of the legendary Mayor of New York onthat day , but I found this to be uninformative . Mayor Rudy took on themafia ? Well I knew that already . He drastically cut the crime rates in NYC? I knew that already . He was a bit of a lad and cheated on his partner ? Ididn`t know that but is infidelity all that interesting ? As a big JamesWoods fan I was also disappointed with his performance in the title role andcouldn`t help thinking Woods was slightly miscast , Woods is in his elementplaying manic , intense bad guys and I`ve never thought of Giuliani as amanic , intense bad guy . As one reviewer has already pointed out RobertDuvall would have been perfect in the role .The biggest problem with this TVM is nothing to do with the actors oranyone`s opinion of Mayor Rudy , it`s probably more to do with the events on9/11 . The reality of something so shocking , something that set so manywheels in motion for both good and bad for many years to come completelyoverwhelms something as unimportant as a movie made for television .

Taking the events of September 11th as it's foundation, the film tells thetale of Rudy Giuliani's rise up the political ladder, his hard-line stanceas Attorney and Mayor of New York. It also shows his affairs and thebreakdown of his marriage despite the strength of the man in times oftesting. As will now be an annual event, the television companies all rolled outfilms and documentaries on the 2nd anniversary of 9/11. The main commercialstation's choice was this sort of bio-pic of Rudy Giuliani with the focus onSeptember 11th widening to take in the 15 or so years prior to that moment. The manner of structuring the film in this way means that it could have beena flag waving salute to a man who become world famous (or more famous!) onthat day. However, despite cutting back and forth, the majority of the filmoccurs before the attack. I found the attack scenes hard to watch as I waswatching a film for entertainment  I suppose this was unavoidable, but Idon't like seeing the pictures too often in case they stop shocking me and Iget used to them. The back story to Giuliani is interesting as I admired his stance on crimewhen he was Mayor. I didn't know a lot of detail of his career as I'm notin the US but the film delivered a simplified version to good effect. Surprisingly the film didn't gloss it's subject too often and wasn't afraidto show his affairs, his tempers of his right wing views. This made it feelmore worthwhile although the TV production values do make it feel a littletacky at times.Woods does pretty well to hold the screen for the whole film and not spinRudy o be too sleazy or too heroic. I felt that he was a little animatedfor Rudy at times, as I always had the impression of him publicly as morecontrolled. The support cast (including Penelope Ann Miller) are all prettygood but do tend to seem more at home in TV land than Woodsdoes.Overall this was an interesting film, even if it is very much a snapshot andis driven by Woods rather than the wider story. The framing of the story by9/11 works well to set up the story, despite the strange feeling of seeingthe real footage inserted into a movie in this way.

Rudy is the TV film shown recently on USA starring James Woods asRudolph Giuliani. It begins on September 10th, 2001 and then when thetragedy hits we go to flashbacks starting in 1982 when Rudy was associateAttorney General. The back and forth between the present (September 11th)and his past is a hard to pull off editing job that works well. The 911 scenes go back and forth between actual footage Woods'portrayal, which again is effective and realistic. To his credit Woodsdidn't try to assume the mannerisms of Rudy too much so avoided the dangerof lapsing into parody, but rather played the role as intense highdrama...which wasn't exactly appropriate to Rudy's more low keyreality. Other flashbacks we get are 1984 when he's the US Attorney in New Yorkwho cracks down on the Mafia, 1989 when he loses the Mayoral race toDinkins, 1992 when he grandstands for racist cops, 1993 when he wins theMayoral election, as well as his marriage and his 2 extramaritalrelationships. Overall a sympathetic portrayal of 2 decades of public office which ofcourse culminates in 911, which is really what most of the filmappropriately points towards. You will come away respecting Rudy if perhapsnot agreeing with him. Finally it's significant that James Woods got this role, as he noticedthe highjackers on previous "test flights" and he reported his suspicions tothe flight attendant. He reported it to the FBI post-911 and they confirmedthey were the highjackers on his flight.

The film is obvious a Hollywood capitalization on a persona. It isdefinitely overdramatized, but it does play out some of the more importantmoments in Giuliani's career. Consequently, if one has an even minuteunderstanding of his political career, the film allows a person to reflecton it a bit more easily. This film is not a political analysis of anysort, nor is there a real vestige character portrayal. It's much more adocudramathan anything else, and that is to be expected from a "movie of theweek."
