This review is from: Season of the Witch (Amazon Instant Video) I really regret renting and watching this movie. I felt this way about 15 minutes into it. Maybe I could've called Amazon and "turned back"? Anyway, the acting was poor, but the writing was far worse! And does every movie studio have the same special effects program or software?? Everything is starting to look THE SAME. When's the last time anyone saw an actual fire in a movie? How about smoke? Nicholas Cage hasn't been in a decent movie in ages...

What ever Critics, i will never listen to you again. This movie is great, cage's best work yet. Please go see it for your self. it's worth it.

I went into the theater expecting an action movie in which Nicholas Cage shines. I was disappointed right from the start with the poor visuals and dreadful dialogue. There really isn't a story, and what story there was didn't flow well. I must say that this will probably be the worst movie I see this year in theaters.

I am convinced that the rather small rating for this film can be mainlyattributed to the current fad of criticising Nicholas Cage movies.Season of the Witch has very interesting ideas, many well executed, andI would deem it as worth watching. I will explain why.The heroes of the film are Nicholas Cage and Ron Perlman, two crusaderswith a conscience, who disgusted by their latest conquest resulting inslaughter of women and children, decide to desert the cause and returnhome. The only thing that awaits them is the plague and a mysterious(sexy young) witch accused of bringing it onto the Earth. One must takeher to a special place where a magical book is found that can dispelthe horrible disease. Guess who gets to do that? The beginning and end scenes were horrible. I would say they loweredthe overall quality of the movie. What I found very interesting was thedilemma of Cage's character, who is doubtful that the girl is actuallya witch and desires her brought to fair trial. Most of the othercharacters were also quite complex, escaping the cardboard cliché ofdoom and enriching the script. The acting was good, the effectsreasonable, without being much over the top.Bottom line: if one can forgive the occasional scenes that arecompletely lame and seem seeded by a demonic presence in an otherwisedecent film, the movie is quite watchable, certainly above the averageof the genre. I've enjoyed watching it and may so will you.

There is so much wrong with this film that those negatives need to beignored to get to the good stuff. Most of the concepts portrayed have agood philosophical basis, it's just the supporting material that fallsshort sometimes. Nicholas Cage, Ron Perlman and Ulrich Thomsen shouldhave been able to deal with a gaggle of Hollywood screen witches beforelunchtime. As it was, I had to force myself to find what was drivingthe film. Some strong themes emerged: That manipulators will use your moralstrengths against you; that a person cannot chose his own path while helabours under the past; that the good in life is bonded to the bad;that the bad is there simply to force you to overcome your delusions, regardless how ugly it gets. These are all easy things to say andinteresting things to watch, but can be somewhat depressing whenapplied to life and the future. The archetype of the witch, too, isbriefly explored. It stops at superficial identification, but there'senough there to leave viewers to think where they might haveexperienced this type of behaviour in their own lives.

"Season of the Witch" kicks off the new year with a very weekperformance in its opening weekend box office, rightfully so aftertrying to combine four or five genres together into one film. Thiscaused the film to lose any identity that it cold of had. The "CageCurse" lives on as many audiences knew it would after seeing NicolasCage casted in a historical action thriller drama jumbled mess. Thefilm takes place in the 14th century during the time of the crusadesfollowing the journey of two knights named Behmen (Cage) and Felson (Ron Perlman). After killing an innocent woman and realizing that he hadbeen killing innocent women and children his whole life in the name ofGod, Behmen changes his ways and becomes a deserter alongside his oldfriend Felson. Together they travel back to Benhem's old home inCentral Europe, but to their surprise they find the region in ruinsconsumed by the pain and suffering of the Black Plague. During thistime women were used as the scapegoats to explain the evil in the worldand some were deemed witches with evil powers. Therefore, a young girlplayed by Claire Foy was blamed for witchcraft and sentenced toabsolution at a remote abbey. Benhem and Felson are asked to take herto the abbey from Cardinal D'Ambroise (Christopher Lee, Saruman "TheLord of the Rings") and agree as long as she receives a fair trail.Along the way they are joined by four others, the only one ofimportance being an alter boy named Kal whose sole aspiration of thejourney is to be knighted.Well the film is just bad. Bad, bad, bad, bad. I cannot emphasizeenough how bad the film is. This is solely because the film justdoesn't know what it wants to be. It could have almost been a comedy, but this was only on accident. The film takes itself way too seriouslyfor this to be on purpose. The plot is totally incoherent beginningwith the hanging of three witches and then cutting to some crusadebattles and ending with a very hokey demon exorcism. The film isn'tentertaining at all and is as lost as it makes the audience feel asthey wrestle with what they are seeing. In one week everyone will forget about Season of the Witch even beingreleased and by the end of 2011 the film will seem to cease to exist. However, "Season of the Witch" has done one thing for 2011: the filmsof 2011 can only get better.

Just went to see the movie and I thought it was pretty good. While I do agree that it isnt the best acting from Nicholas Cage I still think he did a really good job. The movie does have a few slow parts so expect that but other than that one negative point I thought they did a good job. The movie has a good story plot and the graphics were very good. Just be careful if you have younger kids because it does have a few very dark scenes at the end which I would think would be to scary for younger kids. But seriously how can you have the ghost rider and hellboy in the same movie and not give it a shot :)
FlashCallahan (16 May 2012)
Basic premise is this, cage and Perlman play two soldiers who areassigned by good looking Christopher Lee to escort a girl somewhere oranother. They believe that she is a witch, and carries the plague, thus killingeverything in sight. cage has other ideas though. Is she a witch? shedoesn't do herself any favours by attacking everyone and actingstrange.Accompanied by a scouser, a boy, and a priest called De Balzak(snigger), they begin their pointless journey. The story is bad, and the film could be terrible, but Nicolas Cageplaying a knight from long beach, why didn't anyone make this before? There is so much to enjoy from this piece of trash, that it's almostunmissable. From the lines Perlamn and Cage spout to each other (whichto be fair, is great, as they have great chemistry) to the eye-poppingawfulness of the effects. It makes no sense, and you will pass caring for the film as much asLee's character does about his looks, but there is something about aNicolas Cage film, that is mystical and lures you in, so you can't takeyour eyes off it.Or maybe thats just me.In all seriousness, it's a an awful film, with no redeeming features, but the whole thing is so stupendously funny, i cpouldn't help but likeit.

I wasn't expecting much from this movie, in fact, I only watched it for Robert Sheehan. I think Robert is the best young actor of his generation, but even he couldn't save this film. Nicholas Cage was more uninspired than I've seen him in a long time. It wasn't a terrible movie, and it had a few tense moments, it just wasn't for me. When I saw one of the warriors headbutt the demon in the end, I had really seen enough. If you like movies like Van Helsing, I would recommend this.
KineticSeoul (15 May 2012)
From the trailer this movie didn't seem like it's going to be anythingspecial, but it seemed like stupid fun. First scene that takes place isin 1235 A.D. and started off a bit lame and should not be takenseriously at all. But I had hopes that it would at least be stupid funand for the most part it was only half right. Than the movieflash-forward to 1332 A.D with crusaders in the 14th century but thetwo main character are Nicholas Cage and Ron Perlman. Anyways thesecrusaders look super hypocritical in this constantly getting drunk withwomen. Than go off killing more people in a brutal manner, now I don'tknow if crusades worked that way but it just seemed like the creator ofthis movie really don't like Christians. Anyways after a bunch ofkillings Nicholas Cage's character realize this is going the wrongdirection. Which I found to be humorous how it lead to that scenarioafter the beginning few minutes of him drinking laughing and killing.Nicholas Cage doesn't seem to take acting or even himself seriouslyanymore, especially in this. His acting and actions are just laughableliterally. This is a B-movie at best from Nicholas Cage and I don'tknow if some seems was intentionally suppose to be funny but it didn'tseem like it, and yet it's funny. I didn't know this was suppose to bea comedy, from the trailer it isn't suppose to be one but sometimes itdoes seem like it. Well at least it's a fast paced movie that is closeto a hour and 30 minutes. I don't know if it's because Nicholas Cagedon't care much about his acting career or something, cause I have noidea how they convinced him to take this role. Maybe it was just themoney issue. There is nothing much in the story either, the two maincharacters and a group of other are on a mission to transport a girlwho is persecuted for being a witch or from just a intuition of being awitch, from point A to point B. Just watch "Black Death" which is adifferent story but similar premise and is a better movie.3.8/10

Upon watching the trailer for this movie I was intrigued yet I did notexpect to see the masterpiece I just saw. I have watched other moviesstarring Nicolas Cage which comment on the supernatural but I thinkthis is the best one.Suffice it to say that Nicolas Cage won my otherwise wavering respectfor him until now (solely based on movies he has starred in.) Not onlywas he very convincing in a very difficult part to play but he alsodelivered more emotion than I've probably ever seen by him. Kudos alsoto Claire Foy who was the most convincing witch I ever saw on screen.I also loved Ron Pearlman's performance which I found a very powerful, who also had great chemistry with Nicolas Cage.Overall, Season of the Witch is a very good story - very well told setin a very vivid and beautifully created historical landscape of theperiod of the crusades.

STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning** Sunday Night * Monday Morning In 14th century Europe, knights Behman (Nicolas Cage) and Felson (RonPerlman) desert from the crusades in disgust, but are swiftlyrecaptured and imprisoned. However, they find a bargaining chip forfreedom in the shape a girl (Claire Foy) who is to be taken to deathfor witchcraft. However, along their treacherous journey across aplague ravaged land, they find themselves battling with demonic forcesnot completely in their control and find they may be pawns in a biggergame than they imagined.Halleluyah! Rejoice! Praise to the Heavens above! How ironic that afilm about religion has made me exalt such high praises that at lastNicolas Cage has made a film that, while far from brilliant, is atleast above average, having just denounced sitting through his latesttwo star effort Drive Angry. And there I was expecting this to be evenworse than that! Never judge a book by it's cover (or, indeed, whatmost of the critics say.) Dominic Sena's film sets the tone for what's to follow from the offset, opening with a Gladiator lite battle sequence, trying to depictthe horrors of the crusades against the hypocrisy and double standardsof religious instructions. It comes off as a slow, old fashioned swordsand sorcery tale, without any pretentiousness or flashy gimmicks thatpersonally I found more involving than a lot of flashier, more styleover substance action films out today. It may end up coming off alittle humourless and it doesn't feel a really big budget affair, butin spite of this there's some pretty decent special effects. Aside frombeing a battle flick, there's also a horror element to it that fitswell with the story. All of this is complimented by some lovelycinematography of the vast landscapes of the hills and the forestsaround which the film makes it's way.Performances wise, Cage and Perlman make a convincing double act as twotough, courageous warriors with a strict code of honour and loyalty, with a support cast including the likes of Stephen Graham and UlrichThomsen which keep the aspidistra flying. Overall, it's just nice tosee Cage back in a film vaguely worthy of his talents, a simple, unpretentious battle flick that manages to be a cut above averagethanks to every little thing being just so. ***

Personally, I like the movie. It was entertaining and gave some historical insights. There were some distractions, i.e. most of the actors had perfect white teeth. But the story line wasn't that bad and it is an interesting twist on how the Black Plague got its start and finish.
rainin66 (10 May 2012)
Terrible movie. But if you watch it with low expectations it'sbearable. You don't feel anything for the characters... you just kindajump into it with zero character development. It tries to be a horrorflick at times and tries to be fantasy LOTR type flick also, but withno shocks and no character development, it fails to be either. Whateverhappened to the Nicholas Cage we all use to love? The guy who was inCon Air, National Treasure, and Lord of War? Heck I'd even prefer theFamily Man to this drivel.I rated it 3 out of 10, it isn't quite that bad but it certainlydoesn't deserve the 5+ rating it has. Come on Cage, quit trying to makea paycheck and make us believe again...

Season of the Witch was an entertaining watch. Nicholas Cage seems to have a penchant for supernatural-themed dramas and delivers more of the same here. Cage plays a Knight of the Crusades, Behmen, a warrior at ease on the battlefield and loyal to the Church, until an incident that causes him to turn his back on the cause and desert from the Crusades. He is accompanied by faithful brother-in-arms, Felson (Ron Perlman). The pair stop to rest at a little village beset by the Black Death, the plague, and are arrested when someone recognizes the symbol on Behmen's sword. When a local priest, Debelzaq (Stephen Campbell Moore) sees them, he brings them to the dying Cardinal who is also suffering the effects of the plague. Cardinal D'Ambroise (whom I recognized immediately as Christopher Lee, despite the awful make-up - boils and all) offers the disgraced knights a chance at redemption - to accompany a young girl accused of witchcraft to a remote monastery, where she will be put on trial.Behmen initially refuses and lands both himself and his friend in the dungeon. But he reconsiders after witnessing the young girl's suffering. The rest of the story focuses on the perilous journey to the monastery, and the strange events that plague the travelers along the way. Behmen finds himself questioning his earlier convictions about the young woman when he witnesses some startling things. Is the girl a pawn in a sinister Church conspiracy, is she a witch, or are there other darker forces at work? The acting was sufficiently credible, despite some cringe-inducing dialogue. Cage delivers his signature brooding performance with monosyllabic lines. Perlman is adequate as Cage's sidekick, another actor who seems pigeon-holed into the same roles, over and over. The stand-out performance here was the young accused witch, Claire Foy. Her acting was downright chilling, moving back and forth between naive innocent and evil witch. The other credible performance was by the actor portraying a young wannabe knight, Kay (Robert Sheehan). This medieval drama will appeal to fans of the genre and those who like supernatural, good vs. evil type stories. There's lots of CGI here, but not to the extent of dwarfing the plot. It made for an entertaining evening's watch.

I'm giving it an A+ even though it does not deserve it. This is to balance off the F's people gave because the movie did NOT deserve those ratings. Some scenes made no sense. headbutting a guy with a steal helmet. the fighting scenes were no where near realistic although most movies fail at that anyway. One scene made me jump, almost no comedy although they try. Ending was Anti-clamatic. I was expecting a twist somewhere. SUMMARY: Fun to watch. Was not bored a single second. A little irritated at times... I will give this movie a B. Wait for it to be released on DVD. True Grit or The Fighter is a better to see in the theater.
Scripsit Veritas (08 May 2012)
I liked the film. I did not expect a historical drama, it was a fantasy film. It is definitely a B genre movie. The special effects were okay. If you pay attention when they enter the monastery, you will see modern glass in windows. It is a blooper but will not detract from the story. The film is entertainment, an escape for a couple of hours. Don't expect Oscar nominated performances.
(07 May 2012)
Theres nothing like a good witch story. We all have known a woman who fit the bill as a witch. The season of the witch is no different. Give me a good witch or a bad witch anytime. The special effects were fantastic. Give me a gothic theme and throw in a hero or two and I`m good to go.As far as the critcs go, I would not judge a movie you did not like to begin with. Not everyone is into witches. Nickolas Cage is a great actor. He does his thing and does it well. The season of the witch is a A+ movie. The wizard of oz has nothing on this movie. Have a fireball or should I turn you into a toad. As a man, I just love a good witch or is that a bad one ?

This is a great movie. when i read the reviews before viewing i thoughtit would be crap bu when i watched it i was amazed how people couldfind that movie bad. Unfortunately people today hate amazing movieslike this one and like crap like the Twilight and The Hangover. NicolasCage, as well as the other actors supported the movie excellent and theacting was more thank just fine. It is a smart movie and a well-writtenone. Nicolas Cage, again, gave a magnificent performance. I wouldsuggest this movie undoubtedly to anyone who likes good movies and Iwould tell them not to listen to the critics. I have seen masterpiecesgetting ravaged by the critics and in the same time i have seenextremely bad movies getting high ranks. This is an absolute 10 for me.
Two Gun (05 May 2012)
Nic Cage is becoming the master of these kinds of movies. I'm nottalking supernatural thrillers, I'm talking films that themematicallystart out a certain way and then flip in to the land of complete crapsomewhere along the way. (The recent film "Knowing" springs to mind asan example) As the film progressed, I thought it was interesting, albeit far darker then I was expecting. By the end, the story spins offto freaky land and beyond. A movie you think could be directed towardsexploring religious fanaticism or even faith itself instead spins in toa supernatural clusterflub of demons and stupidity. The ending andterrible direction absolutely ruins what was a pretty good firsttwo-thirds of a movie. What makes this twice as bad is the fact thatit's a "journey" film, meaning that everything that was set up leads tothe resolution. In this case, the resolution is nonsensical andunsatisfying and negates just about anything good about the firsttwo-thirds of its running time.
