Woeful

It seemed (I thought) to be such a noble goal. To review all the movieson the Treeline Films DVD compilation '50 SciFi Classics'. And after'The Incredible Petrified World', 'Queen of the Amazons' and 'RobotMonster'; to this bad film aficionado, it would also be most enjoyable. But then came 'She Gods of Shark Reef'.One can only imagine the good people at Treeline discovered the daybefore it released '50 SciFi Classics' that their collection onlycontained 49 films. So, in their need to find a filler fast, we end upwith this non-SciFi film that was seemingly videotaped off a TV stationwhose reception you can only get by plugging the aerial into thetoaster. Except, such a movie would never be played by one of those TVstations, due to its fear of losing an audience.Even the Treeline plot summary on the DVD sleeve gives you the telltale sign that your in for a painful experience, as the best thing theycan say at the beginning is 'Filmed in Hawaii'; which to my surprise, turned out to be a colour production process that seemingly gives thisfilm a maximum of only 3 colour tones at any one time.I will not give you a plot synopsis as I strongly recommend you don'twatch this film. It manages to find that special 'woeful' niche, whereit's not bad enough to be enjoyable, yet hardly good enough to bewatchable. However, I know that no matter how appalling it is, lessons can bedrawn from a movie. The three lessons I learned from this film were:(1) its OK to hit a woman, provided she is fat and ugly(2) no matter how you film it, a dead shark looks very obviously like adead shark, even if you push it to the intended shark attack victim, ordrag it in the water to give the impression that its swimming(3) if there was an award for 'Smallest Killer Shark in Film', the poorlittle dead creature used here would win (and by more than a fin). Infact, if it were any smaller, it could easily be mistaken for krill. I have sacrificed myself to the She Gods so that you may forego thepain. I recommend that you take the opportunity instead to turn off theTV and go outside for a pleasant 70 minute walk and talk with a friendor loved one. The type of thing people probably did before theinvention of film.

Tropical Hunksploitation Cheese

One way of looking at this movie is that it's one of the worst to comefrom its time and place. In this context, we see two young,good-looking hunks, both outlaws, who end up stranded on a tropicalisland inhabited by primitive hot white women who all speak brokenEnglish and cling to weird taboos and traditions, such as believing thesharks are gods, or some such nonsense.Another way of looking at this movie is that clever editing could haveturned it into a touching story about two men who, while vacationing inHawaii near the Hospital for Brain Damaged Women, discover just howattracted they are to each other soon after one of them tries to stopbeing gay by dating one of the native women. In this sense, one couldconsider this movie a well done piece of cinema history, especiallysince it was ahead of its time on the topic of civil rights. It is by imagining the latter scenario that this movie can be madeentertaining enough to sit though. If you watch this by takingeverything at face value, this flick is way too boring to finish. I'dsay the only major motivation anyone would have to watch this movie isif they'd purchased some sort of boxed set that includes this, whichis, incidentally, the only reason I watched it.The full synopsis goes like this: Two young, well-built dudes end upstranded on a Hawaiian beach and decide to never wear shirts again. They encounter a civilization of aforementioned broken English-speakingwomen led by a psychotic mother matron character who is obsessed withlocal tradition, which involves human sacrifice to appease the sharkgod. This means feeding a few of the young hotties to a mid-sized sharkthat may or may not be alive. One of the guys, Chris (Bill Cord) eventually falls in love with one ofthe native babes, Mahia (Lisa Montell), much to the irritation ofChris's ambiguously gay partner, Jim (Don Durant). Since the mothermatron (Jeanne Gerson) is a nasty old woman who hates men, she decidesto have Mahia sacrificed to the shark god to make herself feel betterabout neither Chris nor Jim finding her attractive.SHE GODS OF SHARK REEF: it's not the worst thing I've ever seen, butit's far from the best. The good news is that this sucker is, I dobelieve, public domain. Those who might search for it could possiblylocate it online for free.

Absolutely Incomprehensible

This is a movie that defies description. I bought it as a pack of 50sci fi movies but it is clearly not that. It is a poorly scripted, badly acted, outdated anachronism. Should you watch it? Of course! - Itis so bad that you need to include it in "have seen" movies. Some basic rules that you need to understand . The so called actorscan't act. There is no explanation to the title, nor to why there is anisland of women only. There is no explanation to what is happening inthe opening scene, although you could be charitable and say it wassetting up the rest of the movie. I am still trying to work out how theactors scampered around on coral reef barefoot and didn't cut theirfeet to ribbons.

Ye Gods, It's She Gods

This is not a science fiction movie as the collection states. It beginswith a theft of some guns. It looks promising. Who are these people themen are stealing from? How will they retaliate. They do their deed andoff they go. The next thing, they are washed ashore on an island fullof Polynesian women (well, most of them are). They are welcomed in andgiven some pretty cool swim suits. The hang around but realize thatwhen "the boat" comes, one of them is going to have to face the musicfor his checkered past. The good brother falls in love with a youngwoman when he realizes she is going to be sacrificed to the shark god.He rescues her and then kidnaps the old lady who runs a pearl divingbusiness on the island. She obviously does business with non-islandersbut also continues to do these ritual sacrifices. Apparently, thepopulation of the island is getting smaller. The young women seem to gowillingly. The movie ends about as suspected. It's just an endless, talky, somewhat pointless piece of seaweed. Now where can I get one ofthose swimsuits?

hung_fao_tweeze (15 May 2012)

The scenery upstaged the movie.

I didn't know this was Corman. I can usually find something amusingabout a Corman film even if I found it worthless. Yes, this film isapparently worthless. The boom-mic poking into the scene or not gettingout fast enough was amusing and, frankly, not something I would haveexpected from Corman. And doesn't Roger usually have a story more compelling than this evenif the budget doesn't muster? It is obvious this film had no realbudget. But not even a larger budget would have helped this turkey. Thestory isn't intriguing enough to store in the mind. Even if you don'tknow what's going on, which I didn't at first, it won't matter becauseit doesn't matter. You'll figure it out. Absolutely no depth here. Thecharacters are strictly cut-out - good, bad, love interest, antagonist, etc. The dialog is, well, not good. The acting is, well, not good either. This combined with the dialogmade the characters seem unsure how to say their lines. You can hearthat unstable twang as they search for the proper emotion to no avail. This makes some of the relationships seem unsettled. It is bad enoughthat the two male leads have to play brothers, but they don't evenresemble each other and even if they weren't related it wouldn't havemattered. Some of the scenery is beautifully filmed. I almost thought I waslooking at a glass painting at first. The underwater photography isdone well. Too much time focused on dancing. I thought I was watching atravelogue for awhile.Bottomline: IMO, nothing but the scenery here. One of the few moviesI've ever seen where it doesn't matter whether I had seen it or not onso many levels.

Beefcake on the half-shell

There seems to be general agreement that "She Gods" is woefullydeficient in such areas as plot, character, and dialog. Kind words havebeen said, however, about the colorful Hawaiian scenery. The movie alsooffers another kind of visual attraction: beefcake. Co-stars Bill Cordand Don Durant spend virtually the entire movie dressed in nothing morethan good suntans and micro-mini-sarongs. Unfortunately, these sarongsare worn so high around the waist -- God forbid audiences should get aglimpse of the actors' navels! -- that the actors' physiques sometimeslook awkwardly proportioned with too much attention given to theirthighs. However, their bare chests look quite good, especially in theclose-ups, and these chests are seen so frequently that the actors'nipples soon become something like old friends. However, one wonders why one brother (Bill Cord) is blond with somehair on his chest while the other (Don Durant) has black hair andvirtually no hair on his chest. One might also wonder what directionsthese actors received for those scenes in which they have to sitcross-legged in those mini-sarongs while still preserving theirmodesty. Also, note how well-combed and well-oiled their hairstylesare, no matter what the circumstances.

Worship The Shark

She Gods Of Shark Reef is a Roger Corman film where two fleeingAmericans are washed up on the shore of an uncharted desert island withnothing but females inhabiting it. Bill Cord and Don Durant are thelucky guys and the main industry of the island is pearl diving. Despitethe fact that one of them is a fugitive from the law these two thinkthey've got it made. But as the old adage goes if something looks too good to be true, chances are it is. These women worship the shark as a deity and that'sa deity that forever needs feeding. And somehow in their religion as inmany others they've divined that the shark likes virginal women.Other than they don't like outsiders in general Queen Jeanne Gerson ofthis Amazon culture also feels that with these two healthy American menthe virgin supply might start shrinking. Though you have to wonder howwithout men did these Amazon cultures start and keep going. All I can say is that Roger Corman did Happy Days one better by havinga whole film devoted to shark worship. And the Happy Days folks thoughtjust the Fonz jumping a shark tank was the be all end all.

Filmed on Kauai is its only plus

I saw this movie - for free, thank heavens - at my timeshare on Kauai. This was one of many films shot on Kauai, more movies were shot herethan any other island in the Hawaiian chain. Since I normally likeCorman's movies, and many scenes were shot at places I've been on theisland, most obviously Hanalei pier, I thought, "How bad could it be?"You know you're in trouble when you have trouble getting through halfof a very short movie. My friends and I continually looked at eachother as if to say, "Are you enjoying any of this?" Bad cinematographymade it hard to recognize places I was at only hours before! Whoeverdid the transfer to DVD - and why?? - either found the worst printavailable, or used an ancient duplicator. There is one plus I can givethis film, I now can say I saw a movie that rates lower than Plan 9from Outer Space. OK, half a movie. Do not see this movie if you likeRoger Corman's movies, you'll change your mind.

True to Corman form.

Two men escape from police, only to be stranded on a corporate ownednative island (?) where superstitious women worship a shark god. Mayhemand Hawaiian clothing ensue. As with many Roger Corman movies, I found this movie to be entertainingdespite bottom of the barrel production values. He also paces the filmreasonably, not wasting any time on unnecessary material. A very shortrunning time results. However, I can only recommend it to Corman fans, or to fans of lowbudget tropical island movies. Those looking for horror or sci-fi won'tfind it here.

Or Perhaps "Shark Gods of She Reef" Instead?

I personally found this movie to be quite watchable compared to manyothers, especially useful as a late night movie, and I really do notsee it as a bad movie at all with regard to either the acting or theway it was filmed, even regardless of some of the ludicrous concepts. You probably are familiar with the plot; two men, one "good", one"bad", end up on an island with exotic women and try to both kill eachother and save one another at least once each.I don't understand the title, though, as there are NO "she gods"(whatever happened to "goddess", anyway?), only unseen "shark gods"(represented by an ugly idol) and an island full of women who collect(and protect) pearls for "The Company" (which we never learn much aboutor actually see, even though it is implied we will see them). One important thing that I learned from this movie is that it is okayto throw young girls into the ocean for the sharks to eat, as long asyou report any suspicious strangers to the local police on the nextisland over! Weird! We are also supposed to believe that this "queen"(who oversees the sacrifices made to the shark gods) somehow is able totell if anyone is correctly reading her maritime signal flag messagesjust by glancing into the horizon when you can't even see any otherisland!I'm also wondering how both Lee and Pua easily swam all the way back tothe island with no trouble at all in those shark-infested waters!Anyway, the parts just prior to the ending were somewhat confusing andthere ARE a couple of other incredibly dumb scenes. For example, thepart where Queen Pua brags about having saved and taken care of Mahia, when she was the one who had thrown her to the sharks! She even criesabout her sailing off away from her! Weird! The color on my DVD copy was fairly bad; the ocean kept changingbetween purples, greens, pinks, and blues, but the overall style andfilming is somewhat attractive.5/10. Not bad, not great. Again, it's fine for a late night watchbefore finally falling asleep.

Alpha Males

1956 was an extraordinarily prolific year for director Roger Corman. Itsaw the filmmaker complete no less than eight (8!) pictures, includingfour that would prove among his most popular: "It Conquered the World,""Attack of the Crab Monsters," "Not of This Earth" and "The Undead."Toward the end of the year, Corman & Co. repaired to the Hawaiianisland of Kauai and shot two films simultaneously: "Thunder OverHawaii" and "She Gods of Shark Reef." Hardly on the same level as thoseother four films, the first was a tale of modern-day pirates, and thelatter a story about two brothers, one a murderer on the lam, who arestranded on an island (in the Philippines or Indonesia, the viewer mustinfer) that is populated solely by pearl-diving women. These gals areruled by a shrill-voiced termagant in a muumuu, and worship the sharksthat infest the local reef. (No viewer, apparently, has ever been ableto figure out who the titular "she gods" are!) Ultimately released in1958, the film is a fun little "B picture" that, at 63 minutes, fliesby fairly quickly. Corman has since been quoted as saying, in referenceto these Hawaiian productions, "Visually, these two movies are probablythe most beautiful I've ever shot." Sadly, you'd never know it bylooking at this DVD from the never-dependable Alpha Video. Colors lookcompletely washed out and blurry (although not quite as egregiously ason this company's DVD of Corman's "Swamp Women"!) and the sound ishorrendous, often buried under the crash of perpetually booming surf.Indeed, this DVD looks so very crummy that it is almost impossible fora viewer to imagine "She Gods" in a "beautiful" pristine state, astheatre goers must have seen it 50 years ago. I cannot conceive ofanyone but a die-hard Corman completist finding any satisfaction fromthis dismal-looking product. Thanks again, Alpha Video!

Better than Robot Monster. I think.

I too am working my way slowly through the 50 sci-fi classics, alongwith the 50 horror classics, etc. Unlike the previous reviewer, Isimply couldn't finish this god-awful excuse for a movie. I agree thatit had to be stuck in at the end, when they realized that cannibalizingall the Italian dubbed sci=fi movies they could lay their hands onhadn't quite filled the slots. The color is so awful that you wishthere was a way to convert it to Rey scale. The plot is non-existent. Igave up after the third meaningless hula dance. I didn't go outside fora walk because it's been pretty cold, but went downstairs and did someweights to work off the frustration. I noticed that this dog justappeared for free on the internet archive feature films site.Overpriced at that.

Silly Gits drowning in Schlock Fest - typical Corman fare.

Since the early 1950s, Roger Corman has been directing and releasingfilms at a break-neck pace. Typically, he tosses four or five into thearena per year. This explosive productivity, of course, limits therange of quality (and budgets) for his productions. However, Corman hasonly occasionally released really truly bad films. This is an example.Corman used the lovely islands of the Hawaiian Archipelago as a settingfor this early color flatliner. If you have seen a few of his films, you know how important setting is to Corman. First - he never seems tohave an adequate budget for his most ambitious projects, so he makessure he films in visually interesting settings. Second - Corman oftenuses over-long and somewhat tedious pans ("Corman pans"). With nicescenery in the background, or a well designed set, the tedium factorfor these shots is reduced. Corman's films are loaded with peoplemoving from place to place, and "She Gods" is no exception. The film is about a pair of vaguely likable brothers. Chris (Bill Cord)is a fairly normal, if not particularly bright, young man. Lee (DonDurant) is his evil, and only slightly less intelligent, brother. Leeis a fugitive from the law. They find themselves shipwrecked on anisland inhabited by a tribe of Polynesian Amazons lead by thenot-very-creepy but still rather annoying Queen Pua (Jeanne Gerson).Lisa Montell plays Mahia (Lisa Montell), who fairly quickly becomesromantically entangled with Chris, but the gods of the shark reef haveapparently made it clear that both men are taboo. Chris and Lee plot toescape, and decide to take Mahia along with them, but the shark godshave other plans. The acting is OK (with mediocre camera-work occasionally making theactors appear to be over-acting), the pace is as good as some ofCorman's better works, the script is thankfully spartan, and the plotis as thin as a fish scale. The Hawaiian dancing and singing, underwater swimming scenes, shark-fight action and lovely costumesdon't really succeed in making up for the virtually nonexistentstory-line, middling cinematography and weakly developed maincharacters. Plus, some of the shark scenes (I believe one is repeatedtwice in the film) are laughable. Can't really recommend this.

Two brothers are stranded...who really cares?

What exactly is the genre of SHE GODS? Not Sci-Fi; not horror...but,Corman. Director Roger Corman has two brothers, one dodging a murderwarrant, shipwrecked on an island paradise inhabited by lusciousbeauties who dive for valuable pearls. The brothers are stranded forten days which during they find out that they landed in the middle of acult that needs to sacrifice a virgin to the sharks among the coral. The likable brother tries to keep his new heartthrob from being sharkdinner, while his criminal brother is stealing the cache of pearls.Cast of characters include: Bill Cord, Don Durant, Lisa Montell, EdNelson and Jeanne Gerson.

unpredictable, and quite fresh for a Corman work

What will stick out most in this low budget affair is that it truly islow budget. You can tell not much is spent in this story of a prisonescape of two men, aided by the brother of one, to meet with ahurricane, and get stranded on an island of beautiful women who fishfor pearls in shark infested waters. But Corman does a good job of keeping things fresh. This is a "cheese"film, make no mistake, and was meant to showcase a pair of hunks and afew gorgeous gals. You can tell no money is wasted. But we don't mind that we don't see aship torn apart by a hurricane. Only the most hopeless of dorks wouldcomplain about the lack of special effects, so long as the story istold. There could have been more organization, however. The credits I saw onutube don't even begin to match the names of the characters. If youlook at the credits while watching the movie, you'll go "Huh?".And the bad brother is a bit cliché in his consistent evil doings. Mayas well let him muse over taking over the world with James Bond as anemesis.Still, the ending is totally unpredictable, particularly for Corman, and particularly for modern audiences. One has to be fairly impressedthat Corman can at least keep from giving us a cliché to end this one.

Mondo_Giallo (09 April 2012)

A tiresome experience

A film with this title should at least offer something, however, I havelearned from experience that some of the worst films out there havesome of the best titles. This is no exception. There is precious little to recommend really. There isn't really anyShe Gods, nor for that matter any sharks (unless you count theunfortunate dead two foot creature that they feature in this one). Thebasic plot involves two blokes who end up on a tropical islandpopulated by a tribe of women. You don't really need to know much morethan that because there is not much more than that to know. This is avery uneventful movie that seems endless despite being just over anhour long (it's one saving grace). Actually, there's one other goodthing about this - the most obvious visible boom-mic shot I have everseen; seriously, it almost takes someone's head off.If you absolutely must watch a trashy women-on-a-tropical-island moviethen try The Wild Women of Wongo. It's a far more entertainingexperience than this.

A Flaccid Shipwreck from Roger Corman

"Filmed in Hawaii, this tale features an escaped prisoner and hisbrother, who become shipwrecked on an island paradise. The land isfilled with delectable native women, who fill their time enactingstrange rituals and diving in the ocean for pearls. When one of thewomen is selected by her peers to be sacrificed to the sharks; the goodbrother, who has fallen for her charms, rescues her; and, they escapeto civilization. The convict brother stays behind and attempts to stealthe pearls…" according to the DVD sleeve's synopsis. Now, if you'dexpect two hunky, shirtless men arriving on an island filled with abunch of beautiful young women to be a sexy movie, you'd be wrong.* She Gods of Shark Reef (8/58) Roger Corman ~ Bill Cord, Don Durant,Lisa Montell

Chris. (07 April 2012)

Planet of women

When Durant kills a guard during a failed arms theft, he convinces hisfriend (Cord) to sail to a remote island where friends will shelter himto avoid capture by authorities. Alas, the boat on which they sailcapsizes in a storm and the two survivors are saved by the inhabitantsof an island of women, governed by maternal den mother Gerson. Thewomen work for an unidentified corporation, harvesting pearls, huladancing and fishing. Sounds idyllic, except that Gerson has summonedthe police to recover the fugitives, spurring them to engineer anescape - along with local girl Montell with whom Cord has becomeromantically involved. It's cheap, uninspired Roger Corman nonsense; picturesque with amiableperformances by Montell, Cord and Durant in particular, but littleexcitement or suspense. The shark reef itself doesn't appear especiallythreatening, the largest specimen six feet at best and looking morelike a lemon shark than a fearsome tiger. Durant and Cord haveobviously spent time preparing for their roles in the gymnasium, whileMontell has ensured no evident tan lines blur the imagination. Gersonis a matron-like mother superior, disapproving of the boys and theirambitions for her young, impressionable charges. The climax surpassed the meagre expectations, and generally thenarrative is pretty coherent albeit very compact. If you worship theCorman factory, then "She Gods" will take pride of place on your shelf. If however you're only a casual viewer, even at barely a tick over thehour mark, this might be a bit too fast and loose to keep youentertained.

She Gods of Shark Reef

Two American brothers find themselves on an island(inhabited only bywomen, woot!)encountering trouble from the female tribal leader whosesuspicious nature, in regards to a god she serves, creates tension andfear among the people. Chris(Bill Cord) is a polite, well mannered manwho attempts to keep his greedy no-good brother Lee(Don Durant) out oftrouble, falling in love with Mahia(Lisa Montell), the girl who rescuedhim from being shark food. Mahia is forbidden to associate with Chris, but her burgeoning love for him causes angst and anxiety, and soon theywill have no choice but to leave the island as tribal leader Pua(JeanneGerson) has signaled for the police. Lee is responsible for thesenseless murder of a security guard, killed during a gun smugglingoperation which went sour. Lee is dependent on his big brother to helpfind him sanctuary from the authorities out to catch him. Lee, feelingpressure regarding their limited time before a ship would be in thearea, needs to find a means off the island. There are far worse thingsthan watching cute island girls Hawaiin dancing, but it doesn't exactlymove the plot along..it almost feels like Corman, the epitome of"prolific", is more dedicated to presenting the Hawaiin location as atravelogue for tourism than the story itself. Eventually, though, thestory picks up as Chris and Mahia's love is tested by both sides, hisbrother and her island family. When Lee steals pearls and kills one ofthe island guards, this only adds to an already difficultsituation..along with Pua who they kidnapped and Mihia, the twobrothers had to stop off at the nearby reef in order to wait out untilconditions on the water were better for travel. Pua isn't about to letthem off that easy and Lee's antics sure don't help matters. Brotheragainst brother and Mahia narrowly escaping Pua's attempts to sacrificeher to the sharks to appease their gods thanks to Chris, there's plentyof drama unfolding in Corman's little movie. Not one to let asetting(or set)go to waste, Corman had the uncanny ability to whip astory up around any location. Attractive cast and lush environs, Cormanutilizes beauty well, taking advantage of what is provided him. Somestriking underwater photography as Mahia is shown saving the two hunksfrom certain death, herself also rescued more than once by Chris.Sharks are established as quite the threat even though they are not thegreat whites we normally think about in a terror situation.
