In the tradition of Scarface and The Harder They Come, Shottas is an unapologetic raw urban drama about two friends raised on the dangerous streets of Kingston, Jamaica. Biggs (Kymani Marley) and Wayne (Spragga Benz) take on the shotta (Jamaican term for gangster) way of life to survive. As young boys, they begin a life of crime, eventually moving to the U.S., where they begin a ruthless climb from the bottom to the glittering top of a criminal enterprise in a Miami filled with fast cars and gorgeous women. The two men remain fiercely bound by their shottas loyalty as they aggressively take control of the Jamaican underworld.

This is the worst movie I've ever seen. I'm having trouble identifyingthe worst part of the movie, so I guess I'd just go in random order:The quality of the film itself is exceedingly low. I've seen a lot ofrapsploitation movies, but usually there's some move toward making themvisually palatable. Shottas makes no pretense in that direction. No onein this movie can act. The sex scenes are awful. Totally unsexy. Weirdangles. Obvious musical choices. The patois is pretty clear in mostplaces, but the few time it would have been nice to read the subtitles, they weren't clear (up against the wrong color on the screen). And thesubtitles skipped whole blocks of text. I could go on, but I'm at work.Seriously, though. If you have to choose between watching this movie,or shoving dull pencils through your eye sockets, grab the pencils.

This movie is very raw, full of excitement and gritty. When it comes to gansta flicks, this will also be noted since it shows a diff spin. It is truly the jamaican version of Belly.

this movie is BEYOND POINTLESS! I don't want you to go through what I did, which is sitting through this violent and disgraceful story thinking that in the end there is going to be some sort of statement made. If you don't know that dealing drugs and threatening people with guns and shooting people will eventually get you and your associates in prison or killed, than maybe you are just ignorant enough to enjoy this movie. I liked the film Belly because it at least had a positive message about transformation and choosing a better path at the end. This is a pure disgrace. It sensationalizes, glorifies, and glamorizes extortion, violence, and the objectification of women. It is disappointing that a child of Bob Marley, who has his father tattooed on his arm, would be part of a film as negative as this. The fact that this film got so many positive reviews on here does not reflect well on humanity.

I had read much about this film before I actually saw it. It has beencirculating around for quite some time and has subsequently gained acult following. With that in mind I was actually looking forward toseeing this film. This movie could have been good. Instead it squanderedany quality on cheap cliché and stereotypes. It comes off as Bellylight. Only Ky-Mani Marleys' and Louie Rankins acting is any good. Therest of the cast is your typical b-movie thespian. Everything is veryformulaic in this film. On a brighter note the soundtrack is very good.I am sure a lot of people would enjoy this movie. But even for mindlessshoot em up entertainment this film falls flat.

Shottas is a good-ass movie. It's meant for people who like foreign andaction movies.People who made bad comments on this movie and thedirector are just ignorant and have no respect for other people'sculture. You wouldn't like if we talked about your movies and yourculture like that.Everyone is just used to all these Hollywood actorsand stupid movies with these "big stars".Cess Silvera is a gooddirector and the actors are cool and talented. How dare u insult some ofJamaica's biggest star.Don't let me get started about the comments onthe actors,How dare they insult Bob Marley's son.Shame on you ignorantpeople.Shottas is one of the best movies I ever seen.Big up Jamaica

This review is from: Shottas (DVD) I have netflix... I live in the hood. Grew up in the hood. I'm tired of the hood and tired of seeing movies about the hood... If i wanna see guys with guns, police, criminal activity I just look out the window... anyways like i said, i have netflix and i like to watch other culture movies... but I ran out of things to watch so I watched shottas on netflix out of boredom... Umm by the time the movie ended it was in my top 10 Hood movies with Boyz, Menace, and a few others. I actually purchased the movie cuz it just had to be added to my hood collection. I have watched this movie 5 times in less than 30 days. I was locked up with REAL Jamaicans and I must say Spragga Benz is Authentic.... I think the Jamaican dialect is referred to as Patwa.... Spragga BENZ is dead on... Probably cuz he's a Real Jamaican.... Every time i hear spragga benz say a line it reminds me of jail and the jamaicans i was locked up with. I get emotional when I watch this movie - I miss my jamaican jail mates... good dudes... Real Shottas. Get this movie, you will be surprised... especially if you dont expect much, you will be surprised by soundtrack too. Funny Scene: Kymani & Spragga pull up on Wyclef & his son in the middle of the day, they exchange hostile words... wyclef's son immitates wyclef. Upon leaving Spagga in his heavy jamaican patwa dialect says, "That little boy, why him not in school?" ...Kymani replies, "Cuz him plan to be a dunce just like him father" ....get this movie. period.

This review is from: Shottas (DVD) I'm an American Woman who absolutely fell in love with this movie. I bought the movie at the suggestion of a friend, who said this movie would show a true depiction of life in Jamaica. My boss was not too happy that I viewed this movie because she always has something negative to say about American blacks as she calls us, like the black youths stand out on the streets doing nothing then go to jail. I asked her who fills the jails of Jamaica? Jamaicans...Who fills the jails in China? Chinese, so why is it so frowned upon that Blacks are in American Jails? When young people or people in general are not giving the right opportunities, they will find a way to survive whether it's on the mean streets of America, Jamaica, or Africa.I am looking forward to the sequel to Shottas!!! And hope many more movies come out that celebrate the rich heritage of Jamaica!!!

This review is from: Shottas (DVD) People scoring this movie with only a couple stars and complaining that it is derivative of other movies are missing the point. There is no pretension that this movie is something original and new. The point is to examine the life of Jamaican shottas, which this movie does well. The quality of the acting is a pleasant surprise. Some of the main characters had no previous acting experience and do an admirable job. Louie Rankin, in particular, delivers a tremendous performance and is perfectly cast. Spragga also is excellent in the film. Although Ky-mani Marley gives a decent performance, there is something about the way he portrays his character that does not feel quite right. Hopefully in the sequel this aspect will be addressed. The soundtrack is essentially flawless. The selection of songs and the soundtrack, done by Stephen Marley, fit into the movie well.I would like to commend the director of Shottas, who also happens to be the writer of the story. The film is pieced together well, has the correct ambience from scene to scene, and is paced nicely in a way that does not get boring. There is also a fun addition of a little bit of comic relief from time to time that is placed well.Shottas is by no means a masterpiece, but it is highly entertaining. There are few films that I watch multiple times. Shottas is one of those few films that I watch over and over. If you want to see a solid action film with pounding reggae and a Jamaican backdrop then Shottas is for you.

This review is from: Shottas (DVD) Sorry to be the only negative review but personally, I thought the movie was gratuitously violent. Yes I know that this movie is as close to the real world of shottas as you can get. I am Jamaican and everything in this movie seems to be based on fact. It gives you a very good idea of shotta life-style from their point of view. All I'm saying that there was a lot of needless violence; violence put in to make the movie more gritty. A lot of people got shot in the head. Is this shotta life? Yes it is! It is important that we see the blood and brain matter to understand that he got shot in the head, no it isn't. Someone else mentioned that there should be a part 2 to this movie. I agree, make a part 2, but based on the underground success of this movie, how about a part 2 that shows more points of view? It would it interesting to explore how the shotta life affects his family. Does anyone remember the famous shotta who had a brother who was an English professor? Or how one gave his mother unlimited credit cards for Neiman Marcus in the States? I wanted to give this movie three stars but I have to give it four just for the yardies.

This review is from: Shottas (DVD) The movie was okay, It really didn't tickle my fancy. Every main character in the film obviously doesn't like a woman of colored - What was that all about? I am totally surprise multi-racial women weren't been betrayed as some type of trophy. Ky- Mani was the man for real though.

The acting was outstanding. Very believable characters. This story needed to be told. I hope this discourages our Jamaican youth from a life of violence and encourages the powers that be to do something about the Shottas culture. The fact that Jamaican actors and musicians were utiliized was awesome! I love that it was shot on location in Jamaica! That certainly lends validity to the project! Ky-Mani Marley did a great job in his role and I was pleasantly surprized with Spragga Benz's performance. Well done cast and crew! Well done, Silvera!
