Solid entertainment

A young man arrives at NYU and he encounters a dance crew that needs to win a contest in order to maintain their living arrangements. Loud Hip-Hop music and street dancing punctuate this story of a college freshman trying to balance dance practice, with commitments to schoolwork and loyalty to his best friend. This is an entertaining romp if you like the loud pulsating beats of Hip-Hop.

born from a boombox, these dancers are ill!!

This review is from: Step Up 3 (DVD) When the dancing is this electrifying, it's much easier to overlook the not exactly groundbreaking plot. I saw the movie trailer months ago and it was misleading in places. Sharni Vinson (who plays "Natalie") looks close enough to Briana Evigan from STEP UP 2 that I got tricked some. It ultimately didn't matter. The other thing you won't get from viewing the trailer is that the story isn't just about the two hot leads Sharni Vinson and Rick Malambri. The very likable, charmingly awkward Adam G. Sevani makes a welcome return as Moose, and this is just as much his story. Moose now attends NYU, majoring in engineering, his dance life very much in his rear view mirror. Except that last bit doesn't even last past his first day of college.Moose inadvertently gets tangled up in a dance battle with a member of the House of Samurai... and beats the guy (the balloons may have been overdoing it). The police get caught up in the drama; Moose runs away from the cops, gets hooked up by a budding filmmaker named Luke (Malambri). Luke is one of them good dudes. He's barely hanging on to a warehouse which serves as a home and dance studio for a tight-knit crew of street dancers calling itself the House of Pirates. Luke is five months late on the warehouse payments. Even the warehouse's subbing as a night club isn't making ends meet. The one hope is for the Pirates to compete - and win - in the first ever annual World Jam, the prize money being $100,000. Luke recruits Moose. Luke also recruits Natalie (Sharni Vinson), this mysterious hot chick, because what's a movie without gorgeous dames causing trouble? That's the plot, and it's predictable. But go with it. It's a platform for the phenomenal dance routines, which is what we came to see in a dance flick, anyway, right? Dramatically, really, only Adam G. Sevani and Alyson Stoner ("Camille") come thru. Compared to the trifling, by-the-numbers stuff the two sexies, Vinson and Malambri, bring to the table, Sevani and Stoner's relationship feels more organic. You guys may remember Alyson Stoner as that standout kid featured in those Missy Elliott videos (Work It" and "Gossip Folks"). I wish she'd busted more moves here. Some of the world's best street dancers gather. And unlike another sorta similarly-themed movie I just saw (FAME remake), STEP UP 3 sizzles with dynamic energy and flair and passion and sheer showstopping stuff. These kids got moxie busting out their ears. The Santiago twins are a hoot. Moose has got skills for a gawky kid. And Chadd Smith is amazing. In his cool shades, dude is like the Terminator if the Terminator made a hobby of doing the Robot. That sick neck drop he does (Moose does it too) in the finals had me out of my seat yelling "What the f-!" But the film stretches beyond the pop & lock and the breakdancing, the krumping and the capoeira influences. Vinson and Malambri perform a sensual tango to Jazmine Sullivan's "Bust Your Windows." And in one of the film's sweetest moments, Sevani and Stoner pay homage to the really old school, as they dance in the streets while that ice cream truck plays Fred Astaire's "I Won't Dance."And if you liked STEP UP 2: THE STREETS, then there's really one cool surprise in store. In the finals, I loved the "Here come the Pirate shorties!" bit. But the LED costumes, I thought, were a bit much. The Pirates shouldn't have needed props. Their skills alone were enough to go to battle with. The Pirates were - to quote Luke - "born from a boombox."

Like a superhero movie with Dance powers!

If you were turned off by Step Up, forget about it, the sequels are infinitely better. This movie is so good! One of the things that I love about it is that the dancers may be quirky or awkward in plot scenes, but when they'e dancing they are so powerful and confident, it's like they become superheroes (moose in particular).Step up 3 makes the right decision to cut down on plot and drama and let the dancing take the spotlight. Yes there is a story, but it's not bogged down by disapproving parents or stodgy ballet instructors. Everyone starts out as good dancers so there aren't any unnecessary montages of bad dancers fumbling around (though there are some great training sequences of everyone showing off). The conflicts are sometimes so ludicrous it's hilarious. The acting is fine, these are fantasy people who live in beautiful colorful world where conflicts are settled with dance battles in the bathroom, they're charming and happy go lucky and I wouldn't want it any other way.The dancing is amazing! There are so many styles and every dancer injects their own personality into it. The interactions between crews during battles were really interesting. They'll trade blows and react to each others moves and sometimes mock the other crews style. They really made an effort to resolve plot in the dancing instead of having plot and dancing separate. The choreography is stellar and the cinematography is significantly improved since Step Up 2. It's really bright and colorful and the contrast and framing allows for you to see all the intricacies of the choreography. I particularly appreciated that the dancing can be flirty without being sexual or vulgar.I just go through this movie with a huge grin on my face and the battles are great to watch over and over. I just can't get enough of this movie. The only complaint I have is that I would like to have a commentary or more special features with the director talking about his process. He obviously loves and knows dance, and he is pretty vocal on the internet so I was surprised that he didn't talk more on the features.

Unforgettable Dancing

This film has been getting a lot of heat for having crappy dialog andplot...but really, did anyone see step up 2? I, personally, think thisone is way better. While some may say it was dumb to talk about howdeeply dance can change things and touch the lives of others...Anyonewho has ever been a dancer knows that's true. At the risk of gettingcheesy, sometimes dance is there for people when everything else isn't.That being said the dancing is amazing! Combined with the Real3Dtechnology it was actually quite mind blowing. There isn't reallyanything to say about the dancing, you have to see it to believe it. Ifyou don't like 3D, don't see it in 3D, that is an option folks.Take this film for what it is, a dance movie. Don't look forinteresting twists, amazing acting, or top notch dialog. If you areliked the first two, you will like this one; if you're a dancer, youwill most likely love this one.

Dance the way out

Even though many of us are not such good dancers, we are fanatics ofdancing which proved the success of the first 2 installment of the'Step up'. Creating a global phenomenon similarly to the street racemania created by the Fast and the Furious, 'Step up 3' has its owngame.'Step up 3' speaks of youth, music and beat. And the desire to overcomehardships and achieve the best. It's not much of a plot to begin withas no one really cares about a great story. It's all about dancing.Sheer outstanding dance routines and soundtrack the movie is sure tomake you wanna dance like that. But I'd say DON'T TRY THAT AT HOME.New cast including Rick Marambri (I'm sure the girl will remember thatname for ages) and big rounds of good high tech mix 'Step up 3' is awell entertainer for many. Unless you can't stand the up beats and thedigital noise which they call music these days! But I miss ChanninTatum. Seriously!

Reaaly bad movie - poorly and unconvincing performances

This review is from: Step Up 3 (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) While I got the movie primarily for what I hoped would be cool dance sequences, everything about the movie was disappointing - from the ridiculous plot to the performances. Quite honestly, even the choreography was filmed badly. The technical quality of the 3D was fine - but nothing else was interesting in the movie.

Step Up 3D: 7/10

The whole franchise is just about a group of street dancers dancing inthe street?! Obviously, the plot isn't what we are here to watch. Theonly reason anyone even see this franchise is because they want to seesome dancing. Acting, plot, story-telling, and writing, screw all ofthat. The only thing they need is a good choreographer and a directorwho specializes in dancing. Jon Chu is the correct choice since hedirected the first Step Up and he did a fine job on this one also. Theeye-popping 3D is what I like in particular to this. Adding in the 3Dis a very risky but also right move. Everyone loves to see a dancingfilm in 3D! Aside from the bad acting, no plot, and the improviseddialogue, Step Up 3D is the best dancing film of the year.

Some amazing dancing, some fake dancing

Forget the story line here, which is beyond stupid, and forget the acting, which is even stupider; just fast forward to the dance scenes. These are mixed. Hollywood has a love/hate relationship with street culture and never seems to know whether to present it raw or smooth it up and digest it into 'professional' work. Some of the more authentic hiphop pieces are amazing in their athleticism. And some of the produced pieces are first rate also. Adam G. Sevani is a super talented young guy; his takeoff on Fred Astaire's"I Won't Dance Don't Ask Me" is one of the best dance performances in movies since Gene Kelly - his partner Alyson Stoner is almost as good. On the other hand there are some faked up production numbers. The two main characters are replaced by dancer doubles in some places - easy to spot and jarring. In other places the frame rate of a dance sequence is artificially speeded up so it will appear more difficult than it is - obvious and a cheap trick. So a mixture. But still a fun movie.

Step Up 3D

The first film was really only good for the dancing, the second filmwas an improvement, but still all about the dancing, and this thirdfilm had the added 3D element, but is still all about the dancing.Basically Moose (Adam G. Sevani), who is majoring in electricalengineering and has promised his father he won't dance anymore, andCamille (Alyson Stoner), also a dancer, are attending New YorkUniversity. Moose makes a new friend in fellow dancer and member of the"House of Pirates", Luke (Rick Malambri), after spotting his pairLimited Edition Gun Metal Nike Dunks, and of course they share aninterest in street dancing. In amongst everything there is a rivalrybetween the two dance gangs, the Pirates and the "House of Samurai",and Luke, with skilled and in between gang dancer Natalie (SharniVinson), and the friends he has made making his documentary showingpeople's passion for dancing, they plan to beat them. There is a bigstreet dance competition to win the title as World Jam champions andthe $10,000 prize for the best routine, and of course they win and alldifferences are forgotten about. Also starring Keith Stallworth asJacob, Kendra Andrews as Anala, Stephen 'tWitch' Boss as Jason, Martínand Facundo Lombard as The Santiago Twins, Oren 'Flearock' Michaeli asCarlos, Joe Slaughter as Julien, Daniel 'Cloud' Campos as Kid Darknessand Kathy Najimy as Moose's Mom. Firstly, it has a really goodsoundtrack, with Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind", andthe song that beat The Saturdays' "Higher to number one, Flo Rida feat.David Guetta's "Club Can't Handle Me". The predictable story is ofcourse not as interesting as seeing the wonderful and excitingchoreography and brilliant dance routines, and with lasers, flashy(literally) get-ups, bubbles and floating slush puppies, and if you'relucky enough to see it in 3D you get a little bit more of a buzz, forthe dancing, a worthwhile romantic dance drama. Good!

Choreography

The movie was entertaining and full of eye candy! This time the storywas pretty much the same as 2 with incredible beats! My disappointmentis, while i was sitting thru the credits to give props to thechoreography director and staff, the names never appeared!! ??Brilliant dancing throughout but most of us will never know who'stalent, besides the editors, was responsible for it! Sucks! I liked thecast of this production better than the others and the loft whereeverybody dwells was a great idea, but I think it could have beenlonger and with more of the interactions of the other characters thatweren't really developed. Why is there always a Judas in the writing ofthese movies?

Best 3d effects out there so far

This review is from: Step Up 3 (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I thought I would hate this movie. It is cheesy and predictable but the 3d effects impressed me and I ended up loving it. The producer took the time in a majority of the scenes to ensure the 3d effects were there and it was filmed with a quality camera so the effects were not too choppy. If you want a 3d movie, this would be my #1 recommendation and so far I have purchased all of the 3d movies that have been released to date.

Fun, enjoyable movie.. great 3D Blu-Ray

I've never seen Step Up or Step Up 2, but the 3D selling point got me to give this one a shot.. and I wasn't disappointed! The story isn't the greatest, and with a title like "Step Up 3D", you don't really expect it to be (same idea with Piranha 3D) - but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Still, I'd give the story about a 3.5/5. I can say that you can go into it without any previous knowledge of Step Up 1 or 2.The reason you watch the movie are because of the "Dance Battles" -- 2 groups enter, only one leaves (well.. they both leave, but only one wins) - in the movie there are 3 of these battles, each lasting about 5 minutes (and the 3rd/final one lasting about 10 minutes) - during this time it's a group of different artists doing their own dance routines, which were very good! Lots of "Cool" moments to be seen here. Outside of these are the typical love story/training scenes you'd expect. In 2D, the movie was good and still worth a purchase. In 3D, it's fantastic. Step up 3D was filmed natively in 3D (meaning 2 cameras used, not done after-the-fact in post production). Lots of "depth" shots (with multiple layers of people in crowds), little to no ghosting in the entire thing, and a few very good "pop out" moments.Video quality is very sharp, colorful.. no problems here!Audio is also very good (it uses DTS-HDMA 7.1 audio, and with a movie based around music/dancing, it delivers). 5/5In the set you get a Blu-Ray 3D disc, Blu-Ray 2D disc (separate discs for each), DVD copy and Digital Copy for itunes.Extras are good - music videos, deleted scenes and a short film.Probably the best live action 3D Blu-Ray I've seen so far -- with such a slim selection available, this is definitely one of my favorites so far.

Mind Blowing Dancing but Terrible acting except Adam G.Sevani & Alyson Stoner

STEP UP 3D – CATCH IT ( B ) Step Up 3D has the most mind blowing andjaw dropping dancing. The music and dance performances of the movie arepar excellence. All the dances are so fun to watch but Obviously theEnd Dance wins it all, it was Super Fantastic. The only thing Step up3D lacked big time is its acting department, obviously all them candance exceptionally well but their acting was quite poor except forAdam G.Sevani Aka. Moss and Alyson Stoner Aka. Cam. Adam and Alyson hasprior acting experience so they were great along with their dancing.Adam and Alyson's road dance was one of the sweetest dance performanceI've ever seen. Stunning looking Sharni Vinson danced really well andin some scenes she acted quite well. Gorgeous Boy Rick Malambri was theweakest Actor and Dancer among them all. His dancing with Sharni Vinsonwas great but in whole group he was the weakest link. Sadly, he had noexpressions on his face whether he is serious, sad, happy or funny, hehad the same expressions except when he Smiles. I think he got this jobbecause of his looks because he is a terrible actor. One thing besideshis good looks saved him was his awesome chemistry with Sharni Vinson. All the other dancers were great in dancing and terrible in acting.Overall its highly enjoyable because of its Incredible dance routinesso, if we forget the terrible acting by most of them, its pretty good.

Good dancers...Bad actors

Compared to the first and second step up movies the dancing part of thefilm is better than both combined.Acting part on the other hand is quite bad, very amateur acting frommost of the cast as most are professional dancers, NOT actors! Storyline is quite good and keeps you entertained through out the wholefilm. I believe that the director did the best he could with what hewas given. As for the 3D effects nothing special, only a few dance scenes worthmentioning. The guy at the end credits doing a "dance" with his hands in 3D was abit pointless.Overall though I would recommend you to watch it if you like this kindof films. It has a fantastic soundtrack and as I mentioned above verygood dancing!!!

Predictable story-line, good acting, and serious AWE-ing

I actually saw this movie through the suggestion of a friend, but ifyou ask me, I think the knew what they were taking about after I wentto go see it.The acting that took place was predictable. I knew from the beginningthat Moose and Camille were going to be more than just friends and Iknew Luke and Natalie had a relationship on their own going on inbetween the dancing. Their fist kiss, for example, took place beforethey faced this group called "Gwai". Nevertheless, they did a good jobat worst with their acting, especially when it came to the finalgood-bye at Grand Central with everybody there to see off Natalie andLuke before they went to California. This takes me to the next aspect of the film. The Dancing. Those moveswere so spectacular that it had to have had special effects put ontoit. And, I admit it, I wish I could dance like them, but whoeverchoreographed these guys must be some kind of dance star to have pulledthis off. I was literally ooh-ing and awe-ing the entire film. One final aspect, I want to touch on is that this movie was in 3-D. Itwas executed better than what most 3-D films I've seen can say aboutthemselves. The slurpee, for example, looked as if it was gonna fallright into my mouth as if came towards me. In fact, I would also liketo admit that every time I think of that particular 3-D effect, ittruthfully makes me thirsty for a slurpee. That just shows howseriously they took 3-D with this movie, hence the title, "Step Up3-D".So overall, what did I think? I thought it was an awesome movie, buthad it not been for the predictability of the events, it would haverated higher for me. Needless to say, even still in my late-teens, whenI normally have an agreeably adult attitude when going to see a movie, this one made me feel like a kid again.

Best movie of the genre

If you're within the target audience for this movie you will love it,hands down. I thought Inception was good, but this movie bleweverything else released this year out of the water. Every aspect ofthis movie takes the genre to a new level, and addresses every problemthe genre had in the past. Likable characters, an interesting plot withtwists, entertaining dance and drama scenes, this movie perfectseverything. Not to mention the dramatic moments are pulled off withexcellent timing. It's been a long time since I sat in a movie andactually felt tension building with the arrival of a new character. Ihad to use the bathroom part-way through the movie but I didn't dareleave the theater for fear of missing a second of the past-moving plot.A common problem these films have is a disjointed plot that stumblesfrom drama scene to dance scene. This film fires the intense scenes atyou like a machine gun, without a dull moment in between transitions. Idefinitely recommend if you are within the target audience.

bought it for the 3d...

This review is from: Step Up 3 (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) The story was weak, the acting was terrible and the dancing was awesome. This move got high ratings for 3d. My opinion? the 3d sucked. I have a 100 inch screen and my 3d is done with a projector and a 3d converter. 3D movies look awesome with my setup. Other 3D movies I bought from amazon is "Under the Sea", "Legends of the Guardians", and "Alice in Wonderland". These movies had awesome 3D effect. This Stepup movie 3D was by far the worst out of my 3D collection. I was tricked by other reviews saying the 3D in this movie was on par if not better than Avatar. Lies. Unless Avatar had sucky 3D! Maybe it's just me but I watched this entire movie almost cross-eyed. The 3D effect was maybe too strong? When it popped, it was too double imagey and it gave me a headache. There were moments in my other 3D movies in which I saw double but not this much. It was like the whole film and I wanted to watch the movie in 2D instead but the problem is I would be stuck with a crappy movie in 2D instead of 3D crap. Putting crap in 3D automatically makes it better normally. Not in this case. So I'm stuck with a horrible movie with horrible 3D with the only redeeming value is the nifty 3D cover. I wish I could rent 3d movies from netflix.

Neil Welch (04 May 2012)

Adequate

Let me say from the outset that while I'm a big fan of 3D, I'm not abig fan of dance, especially modern dance. I don't care for the music, and I don't much like modern dance techniques. Having said that, itdoesn't mean that I don't appreciate the amazing gymnastic skills andphysical dexterity shown by every dancer in this movie. I might notlike it very much, but I'm more than happy to acknowledge howstunningly impressive it is and, if you are a fan of this style ofdancing, then it will blow you away.Although it is clear that the movie is a sequel (right from the startit is obvious that certain characters have an established screenhistory), this doesn't matter - it stands perfectly well on its own.The story is basically the same as the English entry in this genreearlier this year, Street Dance 3D - good but impoverished dance grouptake on bad but wealthy dance group in hight profile dance tournament, overcoming various hardships and personal betrayals on the way. Thisone has an additional subplot where amazing dancer geek Moose keepsignoring his old best (girl) friend and risks desiring his relationshipwith her. There is a sequence which tips its hat (literally) to both Gene Kellyand Fred Astaire, and it was comforting to see that these youngsterscan do it the old-fashioned way too.I thought the 3D was often really effectively used.If you don't care for the dancing, the movie just about reaches "O.K."If you do, though, then you are one of the people it was made for, andyou'll love it.

Rix (04 May 2012)

come on, really?

Was dragged by my nieces to see this. This movie was missing the most needed element, ....actors!None of the people in this move had any acting chopps! Who ever was the script writer should leave hollywood for writing such cheesy garbage. Plus the theater was full of young bratty girls paying more attention to their texting than the movie. Usually that would bother me, but this time it was understandable. Save your money.
