In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth - something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Brevity is the soul of wit so I'll be brief. Super 8 isn't a veryoriginal piece. It feels like composite of Spielberg's early works withliberal serving of 'The Goonies' with a side of 'Cloverfield'. Plot ispretty standard family problems, story told many times before. But whatthis film does is work. Acting is solid, characters believable, actionexciting, jokes funny. This movie made me smile all the way home. J.J.Abrams took all the parts that make the film "Spielbergian" and made itown. Entertainment of the highest sort. If you're after that elusivefeeling you had when watching 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' that's yourbest choice.

Clearly co-producer Steven Spielberg and writer/director J. J. Abrams wanted to paint a picture-perfect homage to the former's great classics of the 70's and 80's. This movie succeeds without qualification. Set in the late 70's in a small Ohio blue collar town, a youngster tries to overcome the accidental death of his mother. Joe (Joel Courtney) has a rocky relationship with his father and police deputy played by the always good Kyle Chandler. Joe and his friends are making a student film using a period icon, the super 8 camera. During the filming late at night they witness the crash of a train that has not only an unusual cause but mysterious after effects. The crash itself is a highlight, even though railroad cars shooting into the sky like missiles seems highly unlikely. Still it is well done. During the events, Joe also begins a flirtation with comely Alice played with unusual tenderness by Elle Fanning. Make no mistake this girl can act. Their budding romance is beautiful to watch and one that most of us adults wish we would have had when we were teeny boppers. The "monster" in the story is kept from view most of the time ala "Jaws" but he eventually surfaces and wrecks carnage all over town. The ending is a bit tidy, but there is no mistaking this well crafted near masterpiece and was the surprise of the summer. In a second viewing I saw the movie in IMAX. Is it worth the extra money? No. The film is obviously larger so we see more skin pores and blemishes, but it doesn't add much to the overall scale of the film. While the film has an extraordinary train crash, and a violent alien creature, the movie is centered on the relationships between kids crashing puberty. Joel Courtney as Joe and Elle Fanning as the slightly older Alice are terrific. "Super 8" shows that a movie primarily about kids (making a home movie), doesn't have to be a "kid movie". Let Jim Carrey and the Penguins cover that territory.

A terrible waste of Kyle Chandler's & Ron Eldard's talents; bothplaying fathers. The movie is one cliché after another. When we finallysee the alien (too late), it's a disappointment. And the film doesn'texplain why it kills some humans, & keeps others suspended (upsidedown, literally) for what purpose? (Other than sparing the life of 1character - to add some suspense. Or to copy the film "Alien" - avastly superior film, in another league.) I know it can feed off thefeelings of humans (fear), as it also felt the empathy of one of thescientists (who tried to stop the train). The 'monster' is notcompelling in any way & it's behaviors are minimally explained. Ineither hated it, nor felt sympathy for it - except, "Let it leave."It's size & scale seemed to change throughout the movie as well.Hate to say it, but the casting of the child actors was awful exceptfor Elle Fanning (& she's no Dakota. Talented, but lacks the on-screencharisma of her sister). She did look like she could be Eldard's child. The other children are neither attractive nor even remotelycharismatic, therefore very boring to watch. I'm sorry, as I realizeit's subjective, but Joel Courtney as Joe Lamb (playing Kyle Chandler'scharacter's kid) did absolutely nothing for me. (And why cast the blondkid w/ the extreme overbite? He was actually distracting. Next time, wait 'til the braces come off.) Except perhaps the heavy kid; thefilmmaker/director kid was cute (as a budding Orson Welles). Everythingin this movie was boring. The story was just TOO bland, & the endingwas quite anti-climatic. Really, the stuff flying up & piling on thewater tower? And for an interminable length of time? That's a goodending???I grew up watching the '70s summer blockbusters & this falls way shortof them in every department. And I wasn't a huge fan of those, but theywere at least entertaining, with a compelling plot & some memorablecharacters, well portrayed by good actors who were also interesting towatch. (There were also other truly great movies made in the '70s thatI saw & grew up with that I won't list now. It truly was a golden ageof film-making for both Hollywood & foreign films.) The best part ofthis drivel was the Super-8 movie (the kids' movie) shown at the endalongside the credits. It at least had charm. I really regretted seeingthis, as it left me with that bad a taste, & I wasted my time & money. The standard of 'entertainment' has really dropped.

This review is from: Super 8 (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I just had to put a review in. Really a fantastic movie. An instant classic. The 15th best movie I have ever seen.
(18 May 2012)
J.J. Abrams and the immortal Spielberg have undoubtedly produced an instant classic. Super 8 is the kind of film moviegoers have been waiting to see for years. The lowered standards for films of the 21st century will likely help this one to stand out from the crowd. A great CG performance, effects, and score encourage the stellar acting. The film showcases Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler's talent, as well as a solid performance from Joel Courtney. The tale of the monster and the army men who failed to understand his journey is poignant and powerful, even if somewhat formulaic.Super 8 is a perfect film for the whole family, provided no one is too squeamish. Some scenes may be fairly intense for young audiences.Overall, Super 8 is a well-made film with something for everyone.

Somebody must be paying people to rate this movie anything above a 4.Saw this when it first came out because of the mystery surrounding itand big name attached. Best thing about this movie was the extra butteron the popcorn. My wife fell asleep part way through so I had to stayawake to make sure we didn't miss the ending and have to sit through itagain. I go to movies to be entertained and this failed miserably.Sure, there were a couple of good scenes, Elle Fanning rehearsing atthe train station comes to mind, but the movie dragged and couldn'thold our attention. And the ending was pathetic. Walked out of thetheatre feeling totally ripped off.

Going into Super 8, I was ready to see a movie that would remind me ofwhy I've wanted to become a filmmaker for so long. A movie that wouldmaybe remind me that Hollywood could still provide movies worthactually being put into production. When Super 8 faded to credits, Iknew this movie was it.Super 8 was a work of art. I cannot find a weak moment in Super 8. Thekids were perfectly cast with Elle Fanning shining the most. She has abright career ahead of her.Abrams direction was perfect. No actor had a cheesy or bad-actingmoment. Also, Abrams script was impressive with such a natural dialog.Michael Giacchino's score was effective. I had my doubts with hisability to put an effective soundtrack together after his critically-acclaimed score for Up won the Academy Award (which I felt did notdeserve it at all), but Giacchino put a score worthy to be called asgood as John Williams himself. The emotional impact was there, especially with a certain scene wherethe protagonist and his love interest watch a film reel of theprotagonists deceased mother. What I will brag most about Super 8, the crucial thing that made Super8 a 9 out of 10 instead of a 7 or 8, was the ending. The last 5minutes, or the closing scene, is one of the most beautiful,awe-inspiring, I have seen in years. I was stunned. I was speechless. Not since maybe Return of the King in 2003 have I seen an ending intheaters that has left me in such an awe.Go see Super 8. The movie will not disappoint. Super 8 is maybe thefirst step back into having big-budget blockbusters again that were nottoo long ago that had depth, heart, and character such as Lord of theRings, Gladiator, Titanic, and even Spider-Man 2.

I'm just going to say this upfront, Super 8 is now one of my favoritemovies. It is one of the most thrilling , emotional, well-acted andjust all around entertaining movies I have ever seen, and I've seen alot of movies. It brings back that old school movie feel of wonder andinnocence that made movies like E.T. , Stand By Me, and the Goonies ,the classics that they are now and I think Super 8 is right in the sameleague. But Super 8 has another side to it as well, it's a monstermovie. This aspect is obviously modeled after other Spielberg classicslike Jurassic Park and Jaws and uses some of the same techniques togreat effect. As I said above, the acting is amazing. All the kids are absolutelyfantastic they really act like real teenagers- the way they talk, theway they act and all their different quirks are all hilarious. It's sofun watching them all together. The adults are all great tooparticularly Kyle Chandler who plays the main character, Joe's, father. He perfectly displays his difficulty in the situation he is in and hislack of communication with his son.Super 8 is actually a very emotional movie. Joe and his father havebeen through some tragic events and they are still trying to cope withtheir loss. There is some real depth in the emotional scenes and thismakes you care more for the character and it makes the movie much moreintense when the action starts heating up. That brings me to the nextgreat aspect of the movie, the action. There are some very intense scenes in Super 8. The movie has one of themost awesome scenes of destruction (the train crash) I have seen in amovie, and its in the first thirty minutes. After this is when theunseen monster starts causing havoc. What's great is that you hardlyever see the monster. It's just like Jaws, the less you see, thescarier things are. This makes it so that once you see the monster itis very satisfying. There are flaws in the movie such as the drastic change in tonesbetween the lighthearted events with the kids to the pretty dark andviolent scenes with the monster, and the movie ends a little bit toosoon, but this is all negligible because the movie is so entertaining, moving, and heartfelt.http://evsmoviezone.wordpress.com/2011/06/12/review-super-8/

This review is from: Super 8 (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) The story was cool and thrilling. The adventure was captivating. The characters where all very well done. The actors, Joel Courtney, Zach Mills, Elle Fanning, Ryan Lee, Gabe Basso, and Riley Griffiths all did a great job.The writing, acting, directing, and camera work, as well as special effects where all 100% A+I highly recommend this movie to all.

Short review: One part "Wargames" sans the kid genius and supercomputer, two parts "Close Encounters" down to the late 70's settingbut sans the friendly humanoids, and one part E.T., again, sans thefriendly alien. THERE. I just saved you $8 bucks ($50 if it's a familyaffair with popcorn).Long review. Abrams has a stock formula he uses again and again. Ripoff an established film or films, tweak it just enough to turn it intosomething that "appears" original, throw in a bit of action scenes, only to discover by the end he has no way to end his story, wrappingeverything up in an unsatisfying 5 minute conclusion that is full ofplot holes. He did this with his TV series' "Alias", and most recently with "Lost"."Alias" was just a female James Bond; "Lost" was "Gilligan's Island"meets "Indiana Jones". Neither of which ended well. And such is thecase here with "Super 8". If you expect more from your movies but arestill intrigued, wait for the DVD.

A dud!The "monsters"...the whole movie... was too vague. Not worth buying, but okay for a rental if you're really bored.

Great movie and a recommended watch.Realize this is a sci fi flick and life issues from a kid'sperspective. Don't expect a hardcore adult sci fi trying to saysomething about life like Surrogates or Minority Report. That's wherethe negative reviews come from. It's not the film's fault it's theviewers expecting something different than what the film was meant tobe.As for people comparing this to ET or Goonies.....I don't know whatthey are smoking. It isn't like either of those fun kid's flicks. Super8 is much more serious and darker by far. Yes it is about a group ofkids and you can see Spielberg's camera touch but that is where thesimilarity ends. It's a great show but a lot different. Watch this withonly the expectation of seeing some kids trying to deal with someserious life issues and coming upon an unexpected event in the midst ofit. The special effects are great and the mystery critter actuallyappears in about the last 1/3 of the show which is a substantial amountdespite some reviewer's claims otherwise(apparently they can't count).

This review is from: Super 8 (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Especially by a couple of the younger performers in the movie within a movie at the beginning, remarkable. My grandchildren younger than 9, didn't make it thru, those older, loved it. I enjoyed it. If only the train wreck wasn't so over the top. Fun. Some nice movie references buried for those who know.

I read about 20 of these reviews and can't believe some of thenegativity. If a movie keeps me from getting out of my seat for even asecond then its got to be good. From beginning to end the story linewas captivating, had enough substance in the beginning to come fullcircle and give meaning to the plot. Action filled, great graphics.superb acting. Not sure why anyone would compare this to Goonies or anyother quest type movie as this was not a quest, it was about emotion, courage, and drive during a time when "bad things happened". I was 14years old in 1976 and enjoyed the small town environment where thestory line plays out. The cool diner, the car lots, banana seatbicycles, your best friend across the street, bell bottoms and haltertops, old microwaves, etc. I totally digged the whole movie.

When JJ Abrams makes films, I either like them or don't like them. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium. A bit like with his recentattempt at a Star Trek movie, which I didn't like. Now when you add Spielberg as well, I seem to have a similar reactionto his movies as well. Either he makes a masterpiece (I.E. IndianaJones, ET, The Goonies, Hook) or he makes a movie that leaves youfeeling that the hours spent watching that film could have been spentdoing something more productive.Unfortunately, this movie hits the latter of the two. Now if we didn'thave previous movies to go by, this would probably be a decent movie. But like what has been mentioned in previous comments, we've seen thesekind of movie plots and characters many times before and in some casesdone a lot better as well. This is all down to personal opinion at the end of the day so if youhaven't seen this movie, then please go and watch it and make up yourown mind.As I stated in my title, this movie had a lot of potential to be thenew Goonies & ET movie of this century. Unfortunately it took all theelements of those movies, gave you the impression (in trailers) that itwas going to be like Cloverfield, only to slap you in the face and giveyou something that doesn't even do either Director's names any justiceat all. Both Abrams and Spielberg can make outstanding movies. The ones theyhave made will be a part of many peoples lives for many years to come.Even with the new generation of kids, who I'm which will be sure to seethe classics like ET, Goonies, Indiana Jones.Like one reviewer said, if you want to see any movie that brings backthat magic, then go watch them again. Nothing will ever beat theoriginals in my opinion. At the moment in the movie industry, all we seem to get is Reboots,Prequals, Sequels to a movie that hasn't been done in over 10 years (IERocky, Die Hard etc), Origin movies and comic books to movies.Countless times we see this kind of thing being done and only about 1-2out of 10 seem to bring anything new and original.I will admit I have seen a lot worse out there and I did manage to getthrough the entire movie without turning away. However the 1/10 is therating against Spielberg/Abrams best work in comparison....

This was the perfect summer action flick to me. It was a heart-poundingpopcorn flick that had a lot of heart and likable characters. Did youguys expect LOST level complexity? Some sort of Sci-Fi revelation? Iread a lot of hate for 'Super 8', but I have never heard one bad reviewof the 1980s classic movie 'Stand By Me'. If Abrams deserves onecriticism, it is for (essentially) referencing that movie a ton. Thismovie is about the characters, and the magic of child hood more thananything else. I think a lot of adults go into a movie like thiswanting more depth or better this or better that, but this was supposedto be a family summer blockbuster, and considering the nature of themovie and the intended audience, I find it a very smart, entertainingfilm. It doesn't have a whole lot of instant re-watch-ability, but thenagain most movies don't.In an era where 'filmmakers' buy scripts from others, I have a massiveamount of respect for Abrams doing both the directing and the writing.Despite similarities to some other films and occasional (I would argueintentional) movie clichés throughout, this is a unique film, not asequel or remake. Considering he made this, and is only now getting tohis second Star Trek film, I think it is apparent how much he wantedthis film made, and that kind of passion really shows in the finishedproduct, especially when you are looking for it.

Super 8 had a nostalgic feel of ET, or ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND toit! And as such I totally enjoyed it! And instant classic, IMHO!Some critics deplore the choice of placing the story in the late 70s.As if Sci-Fi plots can only be contemporary to be truly enjoyable. Hadthis plot been written for the 2010s era, the age of smart phones andinstant news feed, the mystery shrouding the train wreck would havebeen much harder to write in a believable way. Logically videos/photosof the whole thing would have immediately been tweeted, face-booked, oryou-tubed by the kids or someone else in the city, and it would havebeen a totally different dynamics. And there would go the suspenseelement too! Surprises/suspense can be hard to pull out in an instantnews gratification society.Sometimes back to the basic works best!
