Damon and Blunt's chemistry on screen is pure magic!

'THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five) A man challenges fate itself and it's protectors in this adaptation ofthe Philip K. Dick short story 'Adjustment Team'. Matt Damon stars aspolitician David Norris and Emily Blunt co-stars as ballerina dancerElise Sellas, the two must fight for their love when the enforcers offate try to keep them apart (for reasons not fully explained). Firsttime director George Nolfi wrote and directed the film (he also wroteand co-wrote the screenplays to two other Matt Damon films: 'OCEAN'STWELVE' and 'THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM'). The movie is a fantasy / romance /thriller and it doesn't do a very good job of mixing the genresthoroughly but it does play out with a lot of enjoyment all the same.As the movie opens David Norris is a popular and very promisingpolitical figure on the verge of winning a U.S. Senate seat when heblows his lead through a highly publicized and very unpopular reunionparty prank. This is when 'The Adjustment Bureau', as they callthemselves, is first brought into action to clean things up. They workfor a higher power (presumably God) and are what some people callangels (although they act a lot like bureaucrats). They have specialpowers, can teleport through magical doors and alter (as well as erase)people's minds. It's their job to make sure their boss's plan (theycall him 'the Chairman') is executed. Their skills are further put tothe test when Norris, by chance, continues to run into the woman of hisdreams, Elise, who he's not supposed to be with. When he, by chanceagain, witnesses the men in action he is told of their duties and thathe can never reveal them to anyone or suffer the consequence of beinglobotomized. They also tell Norris he can not see the girl. Norrisfollowing his heart, passion and love of course decides to ignore theircommands. The movie is as silly as it sounds and completely over the top (whichis odd for a Matt Damon film) but it had a lot of potential to besomething really great. The acting by Damon and Blunt is outstandingand their chemistry on screen is pure magic (one of the best cinematicrelationships I've seen depicted on screen in a while). That's why Ireally wanted to like the movie and after a botched and cheesy scenehere and another there I kept hoping it would redeem itself. Thewriting is a little weak and the directing is amateurish (althoughthere are several scenes that work, all involving Damon and Blunt). Thewhole movie it felt like their was a great movie waiting to break freebut it couldn't. Even so it's worth seeing if for nothing else than tosee Damon and Blunt in action together. As a romance and a film aboutthe power of love it definitely works.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIAZ2104LOU

deeply intriguing and enthralling

Can we plan our destiny, or is our destiny predetermined by forcesoutside our will? This is the main point of this science-fictionthriller, where the romance between David and Elise captured me so muchas to make my attention concentrate more on the extremely attractivecouple Damon-Blunt than on that central issue. Their chemistry worksout effectively, never seen such a lovable Damon before, with such acharming smile, Emily Blunt proves mysterious and attractive as usual,so when they lips first meet, something explosive is ignited. Thecentral issue is of course not original, but interesting in theintriguing and breathtaking way it is represented, without moving toofar to any conclusion. Certainly free will is eagerly supported, certainly the movie sides with the need to dare and not to be afraid tofollow what you think important for your life, against all more or lessreasonable obstacles, even against your destiny, mainly when the loveof your life is involved. The story proceeds with a quick, intriguingpace, the science-fiction and the romance, the supernatural and therealistic blend perfectly, on the stage of a wonderful and anever-enchanting New York, keeping the viewer always captivated andentertained, and making the movie really enjoyable from the beginningtill the end.

It's a meh movie

This review is from: The Adjustment Bureau (Amazon Instant Video) Not a bad movie, but not particularly good either. No climax really. It's so Hollywood-tsy, yet so boring at moments. Was probably inspired by the premise behind Fringe - the "angels" wear the same hats as the observers in Fringe, they constantly "observe", etc. Unlike Fringe though this movie was too artificial and shallow, and failed to make me believe and identify with the characters. In Fringe love is used as the differentiator, the force that saves humanity, here... meh. Then it has also borrowed stuff from the Matrix - the door-opening to access various route shortcuts, etc. In the end though, it's just that - a sack of borrowed ideas and "moments", which were so badly mish-mashed, nothing really meaningful came out, sorry.

See it for the romance

This review is from: The Adjustment Bureau [Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy] (Blu-ray) The Adjustment Bureau is first and foremost a love story. It just happens to be set in the Twilight Zone. The onscreen chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt is electric and carries the movie through scenes, that when you stop to think about them, are fairly preposterous. Fortunately, it's easy to lose yourself in this beautifully photographed story of two people who struggle and race against fate to stay together and not worry too much about the metaphysics of the whole thing. The movie wears the cloak of its spiritual message lightly, and those who complain about its revisionist take on Judeo-Christian mythology miss the point. Just root for the lovers and enjoy the ride.

A spoiler-free review

Based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, this isn't at all the Bourne-esque action-thriller the trailers led me to believe it would be. I don't feel like I can say much without spoiling the plot and some interesting reveals; so, on that note, I'll just say it's a story about faith and faith in love and one's own right to choose how to experience love. The performances were adequate, the concept intriguing, but I never really connected emotionally with the characters as people. The ending was gratifying yet fairly predictable, and I left the theater feeling like I saw an OK film that had missed opportunities to be a great film.

A Match Made - and Interrupted - in Heaven

I know how revered Phillip K. Dick is among the sci-fi community, soI'll not offend, other than to say I wasn't taken in. This film isbased on his short story, 'The Adjustment Team', and follows his otherfilm adaptations, notably 'Blade Runner' and 'Minority Report'.Prior to going on stage, David Norris (Matt Damon) encounters Elise(Emily Blunt) in the gents. She's an unauthorised guest at his campaignrally (he's running for Senate) and is hiding there. The pair hit itoff immediately. Their interaction is non-physical (minus a partingkiss), but is deliciously seductive. Elise is interested; Norris isbesotted. Beguiled by Elise's sweet-nothings, Norris ignores hiscarefully rehearsed, meticulously researched speech and speaks from theheart. And it's a cinematic sucker-punch.Thing is, they weren't supposed to meet. That's where the sci-fi kicksin. The Adjustment Bureau are God's angels (though they are coy aboutsaying so). They busy themselves ensuring that every person's plan –that's their life plan – goes according to plan. They intervenewhenever it seems someone is going off plan by making 'adjustments'.For servants of the Messiah, the Bureau's powers are dubiously limitedand conditional. They're a bunch of Inspector Clouseaus: bumbling, contradictory and dopey. They don't even have good dialogue ('Itdoesn't matter how you feel', one Bureau member says to Norris, 'Whatmatters is what's in black and white').AB members live 'a little longer than humans', can't exact too manyadjustments, can't exact any adjustments near water and can't evenanswer Norris when he asks (many times to allow them to confer and getback to him) why they are so interested in his plan. When TerrenceStamp finally answers, we're so unconcerned that we want the AB toexact an adjustment to end the film.Beneath all the bull, like the ramblings on free will, there'stenderness. Damon never stops searching for Elise, never stopsovercoming the hurdles the Bureau put in front of him. He's likeIndiana Jones whizzing around New York via special doors, accessible bywearing a Bureau fedora. Damon's chemistry with Blunt recalls thechemistry he had with Vera Farminga in 'The Departed' – but with ahigher bonding of electrons and neutrons. If 'The Adjustment Bureau' is sure it's a sci-fi film, it should betaken with a pinch of salt. Watch it as a rom-com instead - that'swhere the real fantasy lies.www.scottishreview.net

Not too deep, but not too dull, either.

I saw this as an in-flight, and I usually don't like to reviewsomething that I can be sure was edited, but I don't think the airlineversion is all that different from what played in theaters. This is a good, solid film. When Damon first broke through, I thoughthe'd be a lightweight, but he's proving to have some gravity (not tosay that he gets the Oscar for this, but he does turn in a goodperformance). I like Blunt more, each time I'm exposed to her work (shewas great in Sunshine Cleaning, and her appearance on The Simpsons madefor a good "Lisa episode"); here, she is an appealing, bohemiansophisticate. No actor's effort steals the show, but everyone did afine job.The various members of the Bureau themselves convey an enjoyable blendof (1) the agents of the Matrix films, (2) the angels of City ofAngels, and (3) the exhausted functionaries of the MIB, or a le Carrespy novel - I thought that the screenplay did a pretty good job ofpreserving their mystique. The story itself was intriguing, and the sort that I always enjoy (the"hidden reality behind reality" films, and the "free will vs. fated"stuff). I would have liked to have seen more rumination on the freewill vs. fated, but with that, I guess it gets boring for the masses. Also, I thought that there were minor logic lapses (but when you havethe main characters in your story go through the looking glass, you getto dictate how/what they'll think/do). The end wraps up neatly. Maybe alittle too neatly? All in all, it's a good one. See it.

I guess I'll have to change my plan

***SPOILERS*** The movie "The Adjustment Bureau" updates our version ofguardian angles in that they guides us through life by supernatural notspiritual means. In the film David Norris, Matt Damon, who's a shoo-inin being elected the next senator of the Epmire State, New York, getscrashed on election day when a photo of himself taken when he was incollage has David mooning the audience after an all night booze andbeer drinking party.Alone in the mens-room at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel trying to get upenough courage to face his very disappointed supporters and the TVcrews with his concession speech David finds Elsie Sellers, EmilyBlunt, hiding in one of the stalls in an effort to meet and talk tohim! Surprised at what's happening to him, finding a girl in themens-room, David is so impressed with Elise in what she tells him aboutbeing himself instead of the phony baloney that his political handlersmade him out to be that he gives the speech of his now almost deadpolitical career by being honest for the first time in his now defunctcampaign for senator of New York State!A few days later when David ran into Elsie on a NYC transit bus hemistakenly spilled hot coffee on her dress and offered to pay thelaundry bill for it in order to get her both address and phone number. The trouble with all that is that the coffee spill happened 15 minutesafter it was supposed to happen,at David's apartment, thus screwing upwhat fate, or the "Adjustment Bureau", had in store for him! And thatwas to change not only David's but Elise's life as well and put the"Adjustment Bureau" headed by head man Thomas, Terrance Stamp, intooverdrive to correct it!Based on a 1954 short story by science fiction writer Philip Dick "TheAdjustment Bureau" delivers the goods to its audience in how the phrase"Love Conquers all" is as meaningfully now in an age of selfish greedand loose morals as it was some 60 years when it was first published.David was salted to not only to become a state senator but thePresident of the United States if he just played his cards right ingoing along with what the men of the "Adjustment Bureau" had plannedfor him. Instead he was more then willing to throw it all away for thewomen he loved-Elsie-even though she thought that he was some kind of anut and really didn't want anything to do with him!***SPOILERS**** It took a while for David to get Elsie to see thingshis way which couldn't happen at a more depressing time for him onElsie's upcoming wedding day at the New York Municipal Courthouse indowntown Manhattan! With the help of "Adjustment Bureau" hat-man, thehat is where the power is, Harry Mitchell, Anthony Mackie, David wasable to convince Elsie that he wasn't at all nuts but dead on targetwith the fantastic stories he was telling her about these strange menin black like individuals who were trying to keep both him and herapart. The end couldn't come soon enough when both David and Elise wereabout to be lobotomized by Thomas and his fellow adjusters that the"Big Man" or the "Chairman", can you just guess who he is, came totheir rescue in changing their futures, and lifetime book reviews, inorder to keep them together not, like Thomas planned all along, apart! In the end David who was more then willing to throw away a promisingpolitical career for Elise ended up having both because he let hisheart not battered and confused brain, that Thomas & Co weremanipulating, do the thinking for him!

Refreshing and Intriguing

I was invited today to see an Advance Screening of this movie by a afriend and was excited to find out it was this movie. I had seen thepreview during the commercial break from one of my TV shows that Ifollow and it seemed promising. In a movie world today where everything released just seems to besequel after sequel and remake after remake, I found this movieoriginal and thought provoking. With a combination of elements thatincluded thriller and science fiction themes, and then adding in aspiritual and romance side of things as well, this movie had it all.I thought Matt Damon was excellent in his role and I was captivated forthe whole movie in its concept it was drawing onto between fate andfree will.It is my hope many people will show up to see this movie. I loved itand know that I will definitely buy it when it's released on DVD in thefuture.Oh and the theater I saw it in had a couple of hundred people watchingit and they erupted into applause at the end. How often does thathappen these days at the end of movies? Hopefully that tells you howgreat this movie was!

A Composite Movie

I am a movie nut. All things weird and unusual that play on the idea oftrue love and the required personal sacrifices to ensure the feeling isnot lust is not easily conveyed in a movie. Having said that, thismovie, in my opinion, was a composite of themes from "City of Angels" -library and angels, "The Matrix" - the agents and entry doors, a littlebit of the "The Butterfly Effect" - personal sacrifice, and "The Wizardof Oz" - nothing scary behind the curtain! The implied sex was tasteful in an old fashioned romance way that didnot come across as gratuitous as say in "Blue Valentine". Perhaps, having been married for 21 years has created an intimate buffer zonethat rejects voyeristic sex. In other words, sexually adjusted people -married or not - do not need to see other people having sex. This was a movie that could be watched with a 16 year old child anddiscussed afterward without the awkward in-the-face sex seeminglythrown into so many movies these days. I enjoyed the effort Damon's character exerted to have the woman of hisdreams - the soul mate - the best friend - the true kiss, and theability of Elise to trust him and herself to go through the doors. For the 50 year old set, hard-core sex does not intimate-sensualitymake, and more movies should provide the essence of innocence in 'thefirst time' experience, even if it is the 30th first time - sex shouldnot be depicted as a handshake - but must always be forever the mysteryof 'other-worldly possibilities' !

Fight for your fate.

On the brink of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate, ambitious politicianDavid Norris meets beautiful contemporary ballet dancer Elise Sellas, awoman like none he's ever known. But just as he realizes he's fallingfor her, mysterious men conspire to keep the two apart. David learns heis up against the agents of Fate itself--the men of The AdjustmentBureau--who will do everything in their considerable power to preventDavid and Elise from being together. In the face of overwhelming odds,he must either let her go and accept a predetermined path...or riskeverything to defy Fate and be with her.TAB is a great example of a film with an intriguing storyline (aren'tmost of Philip K. Dick's material usually are?) which is executed in amediocre way, and I stress that word to the fullest extent. Whilewatching TAB, I felt very indifferent throughout. There were somerandom, decent chase scenes here and there and the film has a lot ofsurprisingly funny scenes, but I never really cared for the characters.I was never really involved with their situation. I just didn't care, and that made my viewing experience a bit exhausting to get through.First and foremost, the weakest thing about the film is the plot. It'sso flimsy, thin, and predictable that you really don't need a featurelength film to tell it. After an hour in, the film begins to spin itswheels. It goes on and on and on and the chase scenes (which seem to beadded just for the hell of it) get really repetitive. From the thirdact on, it's just a huge mess. On top of that, the ending is lame ashell. It is probably the definition of deus ex machina. It felt reallytacked on which is ironic since it seemed that the reason the film waspushed back from 2010 to a 2011 release was because they had to reshootthe ending. So much for that. The characters weren't really developed either, even though thetalented Matt Damon and Emily Blunt tried their best to elevate themediocre script. If anything, they saved the film from being a totallyforgettable film than it already is. I thought John Slattery added somewell needed humor throughout the film, which I didn't expect at all. Ireally liked his character. On a technical standpoint, it's a mixedbag. The good was the awesome scenery of New York. The bad was thecamera focus itself. It felt like the cinematographer had no idea whathe was doing. Doubt me? Watch the film and you can see MANY blurryscenes throughout. Talk about a rushed production.Overall, TAB had huge potential. The story was very interesting to me,although it did remind me a lot of DARK CITY (a much better andeffective film, in my opinion). The actors seriously try their best buteven they couldn't save the film. As a huge sci-fi fan, I was severelydisappointed by it. If you're intrigued, just wait for it on DVD andrent it instead or watch DARK CITY...or even read Philip K. Dick'soriginal short story itself.

collipal-1 (04 May 2012)

An excellent sci-fi film

I like the novels and short stories from author Philip K. Dick(1928-1982), but my expectations before watching the movies based onhis work are always low, because even though I liked some of them verymuch (Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly and Total Recall), I found otherones to be atrocious pieces of crap (Impostor and Paycheck). I thinkthat the difficulty for adapting his work to the big screen does notonly lie on his febrile vision and extravagant ideas, but also on theuse of narrative structures which challenge the unavoidable formulasfrom the cinematographic screenplay. So, even though his books andshort stories might seem like a good starting point for a film, theysometimes loose the "magic", because they are forced to fit into therigid Hollywood parameters. So, I was not surprised to find that thefilm The Adjustment Bureau has very few in common with the short storyAdjustment Team, on which it was supposedly based; on the other hand, what did surprise me was to find a brilliant movie on its own merit, whose combination of science fiction and romance feels perfectlyintegrated and intelligently written. It is convenient not to reveal too much about the screenplay from TheAdjustment Bureau, because I liked discovering the clues andrevelations about the "agents" at the same time of the main charactersvery much. I also liked the way in which the movie denies itself tobring a definite answer about the "agents", preferring to designatedivergent routes in order to let the spectators to draw conclusionsaccording to their own ideology. That same balance between the evidentand the implicit extends to the other elements from the screenplay, soThe Adjustment Bureau can leave equally satisfied to those who are onlysearching to spend a time of adventure, romance and suspense; and tothose ones who want to analyze the concepts from the story deeply, speculating about all those things which are suggested, but notexplained. As I mentioned in many occasions, I am not a big fan of romanticcinema, and I think that that is because I rarely feel it real andsincere. There are many movies which limit themselves to present us anattractive couple and expect us to accept their relationship withoutquestioning their reasons and credibility. On the opposite, TheAdjustment Bureau rounds on an intense and credible romance between thecharacters interpreted by Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, who both have aperfect chemistry with each other, and also make a great work atbringing a genuine life to their characters' feelings. I will not denythat the fact that the story occasionally makes us to take a leap offaith, but I did not have any problem in accepting the mutual chemistrybetween the main characters. In fact, it was indispensable for it to beso, because the romance is not an ornament of the screenplay, but itsabsolute axis, and if it had not worked, the rest of the movie wouldhave collapsed due to a lack of cohesion. Besides, I found themetaphysical aspect from The Adjustment Bureau to be very interesting. The only complain I have against The Adjustment Bureau is that theending is a bit convenient. In spite of that, I liked this film verymuch, and I was not bothered at all by the lack of the bizarre elementsfrom the short story in order for it to forge its own style and createa fascinating world inhabited by solid and interesting characters.Besides of the performances from Damon and Blunt, I also liked the workfrom John Slattery, Anthony Mackie and the great Terence Stamp.Director George Nolfi had an excellent debut with The AdjustmentBureau, and I will definitely look forward to his next projects.

lewiskendell (04 May 2012)

Fated to be average at best.

I had high, high hopes for The Adjustment Bureau. Emily Blunt and MattDamon are both among my favorite actors, and early inklings of the plotmade it seem similar to Dark City in all the right ways. Two desperatelovers being kept apart by a shadowy, powerful group that seems to holdthe reigns of fate, itself. Those high hopes were not realized. The Adjustment Bureau is by nomeans a bad movie, but it's just so ordinary and unimaginative that itcomes off as a watered-down love story/thriller instead of theexciting, tense struggle it could have been. Damon and (especially)Blunt aren't really given anything substantial to do. There's aninteresting sequence or two near the end, but the rest of the movie isso pedestrian that the fantastical premise is mostly wasted. See it if you are a fan of the leads, but don't expect more than a verystandard thriller with little sense of tension or depth.

Interesting Movie

FREE WILL FOR SALE

The movie starts out great. I thought it was going to be Jason Bourne vs. The Matrix. As it turns out if was a bizarre love story involving fate. Matt Damon, due to an oversleeping "angel" or controller accidentally discovers that "God" aka "chairman" (apparently Frank Sinatra took over that spot) has a master plan for humans because we can't do anything right on our own. The chairman uses "angels" to control the outcome of major events in the world by tweaking people's thoughts and sometimes causing accidents and deaths.Matt meets a girl and they immediately hit it off, however they were never supposed to meet again as that would change the game plan. When they do, it sends ripples through that ultimate game plan, apparently flexibility is not one of the Chairman's virtues. The movie is about them trying to be together vs. fate keeping them apart. It is perhaps more of a love story than anything else. For people who believe in a higher power, it is as thought provoking as the book of Job and make it a 4 star movie. This movie has no great special effects as Matrix, no fast speed fighting, no great sound track, no nudity, no sex (just implied) and I don't recall any F-bombs.

Great Mind Twister

This review is from: The Adjustment Bureau (DVD) Two great actors, Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. To me it was a real thinking film, as well as having plenty of action and suspense. It had me on the edge of my seat. I have recommended this film to several people.

(29 April 2012)

I think I was adjusted

This is a better film than I thought it would be. My PS3 Blu-ray player and modem were giving me fits trying to get the Blu-ray started, it wouldn't move past the load screen and the modem kept turning on and off and resetting so I manually updated my PS3 and that ending up working finally. But the funny and weird part about that was the explanation the adjustment bureau guys give to Matt Damon about how you can tell they are working like when your internet goes down - which happened to me specifically affecting my Blu-ray player which never happens. So that made the film more enjoyable whether my fate was really being adjusted or just a clever thing built into the Blu-ray as a gimmick. I pretty much enjoy everything Emily Blunt is in and Matt Damon was in good form, plus Terence Stamp (always General Zod to me) was a great addition. The only thing that brought it down a little was the lead character's occupation, a politician. Kind of a generic one so it was hard to root one way or the other for him but at least some jabs were made at the politician-making machine like focus groups to see what color tie would make people like him more.

(28 April 2012)

Damon actually takes a little break from running in this movie!

I have to admit I am getting a little fed up with low standards in movies these days. I saw Battle Los Angeles last week and almost gave up on Hollywood all together, what a borefest that was. Well Adjustment Bureau is a little underwhelming as well but what left me with a better feeling about this one as opposed to the last dozen or so movies I have seen is that they don't rely on flashy effects, hip music and cliches to make up for what lacks in the rest of the movie. Adjustment Bureau earned its 3.5 stars on substance alone and although that is nothing to brag about it's more than most movies can say. If you liked movies like The Matrix and Inception chances are you will enjoy this, just don't have too high of expectations for films these days and you will spare yourself some disappointment.

talkingmammal1 (28 April 2012)

Pseudo Religious Disappointment

OK, I admit I went to see this film without reading anything about itfirst, but sometimes that's more fun......although not in this case. Iwas expecting some shadowy, high tech, time travelling, spacetimecontinuum policing bureau that was created in 1950's US (judging by theway they dress) that was attempting to foil or impose some dastardlyplan with Matt Damon as the counterpoint to either of these. Instead itturned out to be a pseudo religious romantic tale and 'The Bureau'turned out to be angels from heaven keeping humanity on track. Oh dear.'On track' for the films two lead protagonists means keeping them frombecoming romantically involved. But guess what? Ta-daaaa. It's all justa test set by god ( the 'Chairman'). Er, that's it. The audience aresupposed to be intrigued by the question of whether or not they reallyhave free will (yaaaawn). There is some nice dialogue which is just aswell as the small special effects budget was obviously blown on theangels' notepad effect which is shown gratuitously at every conceivableopportunity. Perhaps the producers son/daughter designed it. Think ofthis film as a large expensive firework that when ignited emits smallpuffs of smoke and some occasional sparks. Science fiction is not whatit used to be.
