Green Hornet, one of the best of 2011

The Green Hornet will have you laughing so hard at some points you mayburst out in tears. Seth Rogan knows how to entertain thats for sure. The Japanese guy Kado is awesome even though I'm not so sure Kadoshould be Seth Rogan's sidekick it is more like Seth is Kado'ssidekick. Not only is this a great comedy but it's fun to watch these 2goofs become superheroes and go out and fight crime. I think it'sbrilliant. Solid acting from every character in this one. Cameron Diazis always good and she delivered. James Franco has a brief cameo thatis memorable and I will probably be quoting his lines in the movie foryears to come now. Don't rent The Green Hornet, buy it because this iscomedy of the year.

If I could, I would rate it lower...

As a person who grew up watching and loving the old Green Hornet TV show, I looked forward to seeing this movie. Then I heard that Seth Rogen was in it and I began to have my doubts. Seth Rogen is a one trick pony and it's a trick we've seen so many times before. He is starting to remind me of Jack Black, who for the life of me is so bad it boggles the mind that he still gets work. Mr Rogen, like Mr. Black, only knows one thing and that one thing should not have been in this movie. The story was abyssmal, the acting...right about there too. The 3-D effects were literally put in to try to salvage the movie. And it failed, epically.A complete and total waste of time, money and air to be inhaled while watching said "film".

Walkout

I have only stood up and walked out of a movie once before tonight. I'mtrying to find something I liked about it before I explain why Ithought it was so poorly done, but I can't think of a single thing.I don't even know where to begin with this one. Let's just say themovie was heavy on crude humor and light on substance. The plot wasweak and the character development even weaker. There were so manys-bombs that it got to the point where you were more interested in howmany times they could actually fit it into the script and stoppedworrying about the storyline. It was a distraction and added nothing ofsubstance to the film.I like a good comedy. I like a good hero movie. I even want a littlehumor in my hero movies (i.e. Ironman), but this movie was almosttrying to be both and therefore neither. If you must see it, wait for Netflix on a stormy winter night.

Throwback to '90s Superhero Flicks

Call me crazy, but this movie was awesome. As someone who grew up inthe 1990s, it was a great throwback to a time when the superhero genredidn't take itself too seriously. Seth Rogen stars as the Green Hornet. If that's difficult to swallowthen don't worry. He's a joke of a hero. Kato (Jay Chou) does all thework. It's a nice joke towards audience members familiar with the1960's TV series where Bruce Lee was the true star. Rogen, co-writeEvan Goldberg, and director Michel Gondry also use this joke to formthe relationship between the two characters. They argue, get intophysical fights, and even compete over the same woman (Cameron Diaz). But when it's time to battle the villain (Christoph Waltz) they gettheir act together and get the job done - even when things don't go toosmoothly.Overall, if you're looking for a fun flick to watch then Green Hornetis a good investment. Otherwise, just wait till May when the "serious"superhero films are released.

A bomb

I was so disappointed in this movie. Seth Rogen's portrayal of Britt Reid as sniveling and whiny is not my idea of a superhero. I would have given this a one-star rating except for the fact that I enjoyed Jay Chou (Kato) and hope to see him again.

Let's Roll Kato.

The Green Hornet is a fantastic fun movie to watch. Only Purists willcomplain that it's not like the 67 series starring Van Williams orBruce Lee. Fans of the Green hornet know the hero was introduced in the30's without a origin he was related to the Lone Ranger and the conceptof Britt Reid and Kato was a rich man fighting crime alongside hisethnic sidekick. A modern update on the Lone Ranger and it worked.however after 1966-67 the Green Hornet became a TV show known only forhaving Bruce Lee on it the show was good but maybe ahead of it's time. The Green Hornet languished in obscurity afterwards resurrected in afew series from NOW Comics and that was it he was almost forgotten. Then Kevin Smith was hired to direct and write a new Green Hornet moviefans of that were excited then Smith departed. Then Seth Rogan wasgiven the chance to write and star in the Green Hornet. And..He doesremarkably Very good. True he mixes things up and rearranges them butit works. Britt Reid is a lazy shiftless son of a Media mogul namedJack Reid who is constantly embarrassed by his son's antics when JackReid is murdered Britt goes into a depression over the fact that hisfather is dead and that everyone expects him to fill the shows of thegreat man himself. Britt has no idea about the newspaper he inheritedor how to run it. He attempts to try but again he is limited by hislack of knowledge. Enter Kato his father's aide this young Asian manhas a lot of talent a lot of skill and a lot of ability during adrunken bonding spree the two disguised go out and vandalize hisfathers's statue when they see a mugging and stop it. They becomeaddicted to the moment and Britt Reid finds one way he can fill hisfathers' shoes Fight Crime as the Green Hornet. He will pose as one ofthe bad guys and take them down as one of the good guys. The actionscenes are good and keep you on the edge of your seat the comedy bitshad me laughing and Cameron Diaz was a total surprise she was justwonderful in her small role. But biggest surprise here was Seth Rogan.Jay Chou was good as Kato and in fact he steals the movie at times fromRogan but Seth Rogan was the biggest surprise for me because he becamethe Green Hornet he made him and Britt Reid feel very very real. Seethis and make up your own mind but for me this was one of the nicestmovie going surprises of 2011.

VERY GOOD MOVIE!

I don't know why some people are giving a really bad rating for this movie, but I really enjoyed it. I love Jay Chou! He did a good job in the movie. Action movies are great, and the gadgets they showed in the movies are awesome. I would recommend anyone who enjoys action movies to see this. I also would recommend it to Jay Chou fans.

Should Not Have Been Made...

The Green Hornet is an outdated character. It was probably cool and exciting back in the days when a guy wearing a halloween ballroom mask was cool,m but like Superman, they cannot fly in this era.I would say pass on this all together. They had too many 1960's references from Kato's clothes, to the cars to the music although it was supposed to take place now. This movie sucked and the cahracter was not one that people wanted on film. Bruce Lee's The Green Hornet may be old, but at least you would want to see that because his career was cut short, and his superior skills. At least this film was funny. That is the ONLY thing that saved this for me. Is it just me or is Cameron Diaz an ugly broad?

Green_Saturn (11 May 2012)

This... is in it's own category of superhero films

As silly as I feel saying this, Seth Rogen and I have a strikinglysimilar sense of humor. It's obvious that when Seth and Evan Goldbergsat down to write this they decided to ignore every highly-acclaimedsuperhero movie ever made and just do whatever the heck they felt likedoing. Again, I feel silly saying this, but the only way I can think ofto describe this is like when you go to Subway and you just say, "Screw'em!" and slap the most disgusting combination of ingredients you canthink of together and it comes out really, really delicious. One of the most troubling things for me about this was something thewriters can't really control. Why didn't Kato ever get a cool nickname?I think they mentioned it was The Green Mosquito, but they never reallygave him a solid nickname and that's just wrong. Kato is the best thingthis movie has going for it. You can tell that Jay Chou realizes theridiculousness of some of the dialog and he seems to enjoy playingalong with it. One thing some of those other superhero movies don'thave is the sick ninja-sidekick dude, and that's another plus for this.(Which brings up the question of why no Asian superhero movies havebeen made yet.)Britt Reid (Seth Rogen's character) is so in love with himself thathalf the time he doesn't realize he's being insulted by someone, andthe other half of the time someone is beating the pulp out of him.Without Kato this movie would've been about five minutes long and had amuch sadder ending, because The Green Hornet would've died. But TonyStark gets away with it, so I guess it's not that big of a stretch. There's one area this movie undoubtedly scores in- buddy banter. Like Isaid, I apparently have the same sense of humor as Seth. How many timesdid Kato and Britt get nut shots on each other? I wish I'd kept count.Aside from a semi-random yet epic fight mid-way through the movie, therelationship the two have (which is quickly defined as heterosexual) isfun and keeps the movie flowing. It's unconventional and not exactly the first movie I'd go to if askedwhat the best superhero movie I've ever seen is, but it's really, really fun and worth seeing. On a side note, if asked what the funniest superhero movie I've everseen is, I'd say this is DEFINITELY the funniest. My sides hurt fromlaughing!

Nothing like the first 5 minutes

when i saw the trailers, it didn't look very good, but hey, i likesuperhero movies, and i went. not a good choice. The movie wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. Seth Rogan is great in40YOV and pineapple express, but he is a funny actor. he also sworeprobably every 5 seconds. it PG-13, not an R Rated Apatow movie. not aserious actor either . Christian bale; a serious actor, and great indark knight. perfect for the part. Rogan: not. tried to be funny, butit just didn't work.now, the movie was very unrealistic. bad action scenes, and the clichésremains: THE HEROES NEVER GET SHOT!!!! i thought they would wear abullet proof vest or something, but nope. never got harmed at all.also bad plot. they never chose between it would be violent like thedark knight, or would it be like a Disney movie. they switched betweenthe two, and it didn't work.if u think this movie is like the dark knight or Spider man, u r wrong.i just hope the green lantern will be good.

Amusing enough to cover up its flaws for a solid two-hour diversion

When Seth Rogen got his paws on rights to turn the masked crimefighterradio and TV series "The Green Hornet" into a movie, we figured to haveit pegged. Rogen would deliver an action comedy "Green Hornet" universestuffed with his brand of immature moron humor. The only question waswhether that combination would work or make Rogen look like an actualidiot. While we think of Rogen and pal Evan Goldberg as co-scriptors of modernbromance and foul-mouthed humor, their 2008 film "Pineapple Express"was an action film, albeit an outlandishly hard-R version centeredaround smoking weed. "The Green Hornet," like that film, succeeds atescapist action, remaining exciting and fun enough that the humoroffers a nice balance and a reminder that typical superhero movieintensity and catharsis are best sought elsewhere.Rogen stars as Britt Reid, partyboy son of a major newspaper owner inLos Angeles. When his father dies, Britt reflects on their tenserelationship, which stirs him to actually doing something with hislife. After striking up a friendship with his father'smechanic/coffeemaker, a Chinese genius named Kato (Jay Chou), astress-relief venture to decapitate his father's statue turns into acrimefighting epiphany. Using the newspaper to get out the word, theycreate The Green Hornet, a hero who poses as a villain to get close toand take down the criminals of the city.Goldberg, Rogen and director Michel Gondry's ("Eternal Sunshine of theSpotless Mind") real handiwork is doing an especially good job ofmasking or perhaps simply distracting the audience from the hollownessof this plot. That's not intended to be a backhanded compliment: withthe exception of a misleading semi-serious beginning, it's clear thatthe film's quality threshold tops off at "entertaining" and the moviedoes us a favor in not serving up anything so pathetic as to remind usof its faults. The subplots and side antics keep the attention off the prototypicalstory. Goldberg and Rogen have keyed in on the relationship betweenBritt and Kato, flipping it into — not surprisingly — a superherobromance. Although the conflicts builds itself on Britt's unlikablechildish arrogance and ignorance as to Kato's superior skill, thesubplot provides for a strong back-and-forth for comedic purposes anddistracts from the half-baked pieces of the film: Britt's relationshipwith his dad, suspect character motivation across the board and CameronDiaz being in the movie period.Basically, the movie does enough for us to care about Britt and Kato.Diaz, for example, while useless to the rest of the film as Britt'ssecretary at the paper, serves as a device for mounting tension betweenour two heroes and to comic results. With that humor, the film buildsthe entertaining diversion that it needs. The humor has its rough moments, namely in the action-oriented sceneswhen Rogen chooses to push the quantity of jokes instead of letting ustake in the car chase or gun fight. Otherwise, Chou offers an excellentbalance for Rogen's bumbling idiot act. Christoph Waltz as Chudnofsky, the crime lord with some serious insecurities, holds the honor of beingthe only interesting/amusing supporting character. Taking a page fromhis experience in "Inglourious Basterds," the actor manages to play therole without going over the top or taking the part too seriouslyeither. As an action film, "The Green Hornet" surprises the most. Gondrymanages to effectively use slow motion rather than do it for the sakeof doing it, for example. Yet Goldberg and Rogen deserve the mostcredit, as they've drafted up some unique sequences, one being thefinal showdown inside the newspaper building. Almost all action filmsof this caliber have predictable outcomes, but "Hornet" keeps the "how"up in the air with that creativity. The whole "Kato kicks ass yet Brittis incompetent" dynamic also provides some amusement.Simply, fans of mindless action and modern comedy ought to find it hardto dwell for too long on the flaws of "The Green Hornet." I might haveto toss this one under the guilty pleasure pile, but kudos to Rogen andco. for never letting the film drift into awful or "so cliché it hurts"territory. One bad move and the gleeful distraction would've been lost.Instead, we get a couple solid lead characters, crafty action andseveral decent jokes.~Steven C

It would be okay to watch without sound or subtitles, if giving a house party.

I am a huge Seth Rogen fan but this film is really difficult to grasp. This is perhaps his most experimental film and that's saying a lot.Nothing much happens in the way of plot. The film revolves around twocharacters who have a sort of philosophical discussion. Intercut intoshots of them are many static images. Rogen considered this as a returnto zero film so, apart from the usual bodily function gags, nothingreally happens at all. Imagine two college students in a black boxtheatre for 90 minutes performing stylized dialogues about linguistictheory, cinematic theory, and revolutionary politics that areoccasionally interrupted by fleeting shots of city activity andfrequently interspersed with agit-prop slideshows. Definitely worth alook if you're a fan of Rogen or a fan of experimental film. However, this is definitely not for everyone.

A truly awful film that will be gone in a green flash

I seldom really, really, dislike a film. I am tolerant to the max if Ifind an element or two that is fetching, exciting, or even mildlyamusing. I love gadgets, well done action, and lots of comedy. This film is simply painful to watch. It is amateurish. Its writing isexecrable. We don't ask much... A plot can be formulaic, but not openlyclumsy. Rogen & friend missed by a mile. Rogen can't even carry off hisown character competently despite the fact that the character has noredeeming qualities.Jay Chou is completely wooden, totally failing to make his characteralive, let alone interesting. Christoph Waltz gets credit for hisvaliant attempt at an American accent, but lapses constantly. He'd dobetter with an indeterminate euro accent if he didn't want to getlabeled for his German one. Diaz is fetching, but completely wasted. She tried, but couldn't get past the material. This film proves that simply destroying everything in sight isn'tenough. Even the gadgets are so poorly showcased they are madeuninteresting. All in all, I predict this film will ultimately take its place amongthe worst of all time, appealing only to the most trite minds on earth.

Sorry guys... but I loved it!

Just came back from seeing the non-3D version of the movie at Cinemark. I really don't understand the negative comments about Seth Rogen. I thoroughly enjoyed the new Green Hornet. IMO.. it captured the favor of the old series, but with a lot more humor. Remember in the 1960 series, the Kato action scenes and the BLACK BEAUTY always stole the show. Hardly anyone remembers the person who portrayed the actual Green Hornet character. I think his name had "Van" in it somewhere. Again, the real stars of the updated version are the action scenes and the BLACK BEAUTY. They really had some well placed stunts -- incredible! Although I must say, this time, the actual Green Hornet character was not the hard-boiled thinker of old, but an immature risk taker, which now makes him much more memorable. If Mr. Rogen really wrote this script, I applaud him. As a side note, I would love to see a dark production of the Green Hornet (in the style of Batman Begins) brought to the screen!

HOW TO DESTROY A GREAT PROPERTY

The Green Hornet could have been something great. If treated with the same respect as the new Batman movies, Hornet might have been something spectacular. The car, the gadgets, the martial arts, the characters are COOL and are suppose to be cool. But the "filmmakers" (questionable if they are) that made the Seth Groan-Again version absolutely made a travesty of a film. Crap in everyway. Horrible script. Wretched acting. Paint-by-the-numbers directing. Stupid boring cliched "bad guy." And worst of all they turned it all into a joke (a supposed "comedy"). What studio execs are green-lighting this crap? Fire them all!!!

moviexclusive (25 April 2012)

Put aside your preconceived notions of what a superhero movie should be and enjoy this fresh, funny, irreverent action-comedy

The modern-day titular superhero (as played by Seth Rogen) is theplayboy son of 'The Daily Sentinel' newspaper magnate James Reid, afearless crusader of justice killed by what appears to be a fatal beesting. Unlike his dad, Britt is a slacker man-child not unlike theRogen persona one has come to recognise from his previous comedies"Knocked Up" and "Superbad"- in other words, underachieving, immatureand maybe even obnoxious. Indeed, this isn't your typical superheromovie- though technically, the Hornet's not a superhero at all.Born in the 1930 as a radio serial developed by Lone Ranger creatorGeorge W. Trendle and revived in several incarnations including theshort-lived '60s television series with Bruce Lee as Hornet's Asiansidekick Kato, the Green Hornet was a masked vigilante whom, likeBatman, fought crime from behind a mask armed with nifty inventionscourtesy of Kato. Still, Rogen playing the debonair hero was alwaysgoing to be a stretch, so it's a good thing that Rogen- together withhis frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg- were also given the creativereins to the movie. While this reboot could have easily followed in the footsteps of thedark pathos that was Christopher Nolan's Batman (you've got to admit, the similarities between the two playboy billionaire sons turned capedcrime fighter tales are uncanny), Rogen and Goldberg have steered clearof those tendencies in favour of a fresh, funny and often irreverenttake. What else should we expect of a hero who decides his firstmission out with his newfound gadgets would be to drill the head off astatue erected in memoriam of his father? Or rely on his newly hiredhot temp staff Lenore's (Cameron Diaz) criminology expertise to decidewhere to find the next criminal hotspot? These inspired comic momentscome just as fast and furious as Rogen's wisecracking, delivered yetagain with Rogen's signature casual vibe that you'll either love orhate (if it isn't obvious yet, we belong to the former camp). Rogen'sgibes are directed most often at his nimble and beyond-cool partnerKato, either poking fun at the latter's halting delivery (when Katosays he "grew up penniless", Rogen's Britt interprets this to mean he"grew up penis-less") or praising his technical wizardry ("You're likea human Swiss army knife," Britt tells Kato). In the Apatow era of buddy comedies (of which Rogen was instrumental inushering in), the Hornet-Kato relationship is no longerowner-manservant, but redefined as a 'bro-mance'- which explains themultiple "I'm your man"-type verbal gags. Of course, the fact thatRogen and Asia's own singer/musician/actor Jay Chou share genuinelyaffable chemistry helps their cause, and their exchanges have apleasantly enjoyable back-and-forth rhythm characteristic of the bestof such comedies.Besides recasting the typical superhero characters, Rogen and Goldberghave done similar for the regular villain du jour, the Russian druglord Chudnofsky. Here the big bad guy is one with self-esteem issues, introduced brilliantly in one of the opening scenes through anuproarious exchange with a young rival gangster (James Franco in anuncredited cameo) who calls him a "disco Santa". Fresh off hisOscar-winning turn in Tarantino's "Inglourious Bastards", ChristophWaltz gleefully hams it up as the gangster whose unpronounceable nameand bad dress sense becomes some of the film's best running jokes. That unorthodoxy continues in the form of Frenchman director MichelGondry, best known for eclectic art-house darlings "Eternal Sunshine ofthe Spotless Mind" and "Be Kind Rewind". Gondry isn't the obviouschoice for a big-budget franchise like this, but the artisan's keenvisual flair remains intact. He is responsible for the film's iconicKato-Vision, that lets its audience appreciate things through Kato'sever-vigilant eyes. He is also behind many of the film's inventiveaction sequences, showing Kato moving in superspeed fighting off thebad guys in slo-mo. Rogen may deliver the humour for this film'scomedy, but Gondry puts the cool into its action, and the resultantaction-comedy combination is a blast.Certainly, having a cool car can't hurt, and the Hornet's sweet ride- a'65 Chrysler Imperial- retrofitted with big guns and missiles puts themuscle into the action. This bit of retro is not alone- there's alsothe turntable behind the Chrysler's front seats and the old-schoolnewspaper offices of the Reid's newspaper empire- and are unmistakablyGondry's touches, his affection for all-things old-school evident hereas was in his earlier "Be Kind Rewind". But Gondry proves just as adeptwith the 3D technology- a particularly inspired use the split-screenphotography with different screens on different planes. This is the result of a film that took more than a decade to make itsway to the big screen, its legacy consisting of names such as GeorgeClooney, Mark Wahlberg, Jake Gyllenhaal to filmmaker Kevin Smith andAsia's very own Stephen Chow. Purists of the original "Green Hornet"may not be pleased with the liberties that Rogen and Goldberg havetaken with the original material, but you'll have to keep an open mindto enjoy this lively rip-roaring action-comedy masquerading as asuperhero movie. On a final note, this reviewer and ardent-Jay Chou fanwould like to congratulate the star for a brilliant Hollywood breakoutturn- Chou is pure understated cool as Kato, and an absolutescene-stealer alongside Rogen.

What Superhero

This is the worst superhero movie I've ever seen. I've seen Catwoman, The Punisher, Electra but this one takes the cake. First off Seth Rogen is completely miscast in this film. He's out of his element here. The character Brit Reid is annoying as heck. This character off as the poor man version of Batman. He's a wanna be Batman. The only reason I gave this money a two stars it was Jay Chou. He's what kept the audience interested. If they do sequel please have Jay Chou. This movie shouldn't have never been in 3D. I consider this a rental or wait for cable.

Wait for pay per view

I read somewhere where Seth Rogen said he hoped that he did the GreenHornet justice.Boy was he so wrong. The 3d was horrible, the sound was tinny like it had been made forradio.Rogen may have lost weight for this part but if you compare him to the60's Hornet he was so out of shape.I am not a fan of the slow mo action scenes. I was basically bored withthe movie.Carmen Diaz basically had a walk on part.I hate to compare Jay Chou to Bruce Lee because we didn't get to seehim do the martial arts in real time. But he was better at fightingthen Rogen for sure.I do hope that a squeal is not made.My advice is to wait for it to come to pay per view.

Don't listen to the "critics"

If you always go by the professional film critics reviews, there wouldbe so many cinematic gems lost to the world. This is such a case. Onesuch scathing review is from the king of critics himself, Roger Ebert. The first line of his review says, "'The Green Hornet' is an almostunendurable demonstration of a movie with nothing to be about." Now, Iwouldn't go as far as to say that this movie changed my life (which isactually a phrase that I use and take very seriously when it comes toreviewing movies), but it's definitely good for mindless laughs, exciting visuals, and flat-out fun. If you're a fan of Michel Gondryand his signature style of visual appeal, then you won't bedisappointed. The fight sequences are stunning and there's plenty of'Gondryisms' to please his deeper fans (get a load of that sequencethat follows the hit men and splits camera angles again and againresulting in a screen full of images all spawned from one camera). Yes,this film is a little talky and yes, Seth Rogan's character isunlikeable from start to finish. Will this movie win any awards?Doubtful. But let's call a spade a spade and if you're looking for afun way to spend a few hours watching something colorful and shiny, this is a great way to do it. Critics, settle down.
