US Army Sergeant First Class Will James, Sergeant JT Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge comprise the Bravo Companys bomb disposal unit currently stationed in Baghdad. James is the tech team leader. When James arrives on the scene, Bravo Company has thirty-nine days left on its current deployment. It will be a long thirty-nine days for Sanborn and Eldridge whose styles do not mesh with their new leader. James is a renegade for who the thrill of the dismantlement seems to be the ultimate goal regardless of the safety of his fellow team members, others on the scene or himself. On the other hand, Sanborn is by the books he knows his place and duty and trusts others in the army to carry out theirs as well as he. And Eldridge is an insecure soldier who is constantly worried that an error or misjudgment on his part will lead to the death of an innocent civilian or a military colleague. While the three members face their own internal issues, they have to be aware of any person at the bomb sites, some of who may be bombers themselves.

Sad, bad; made me mad that I spent time watching this half-baked warflick. What's the problem? No real plot, nothing too interesting goingon, hyper-realism that's both essentially boring and at the same timeall too real...so it's more like a documentary highlighted by typical"illuminating" contrived back stories. The entire movie felt very phonyin its pretensions. That said, it wasn't preachy, at least notdirectly, and the acting was credible. I give lots of credit to thedirector for getting this movie made, but it's not much of a movieeither. How could it have been improved?- by adding a politicalframework for the Iraqi point of view...are we just supposed to assumethe usual contagion/animosity and all its stereotypical components? What about the sectarian strife between Muslim factions, etc? Is thismerely a bomb squad movie that happens to be set some place in theMiddle East?

This movie i personally dislike, it's not a great sample of war film.i keep questioning me, how did this movie were so awarded, if it didn'tadded me nothing (i say that when i compare The Hurt Locker withSchindler's List, Letters from Iwo Jima, Full Metal Jacket and others)i gave this movie 2/10. it isn't all bad... i liked the snipersequence.Maybe this movie wouldn't go so far if: -wasn't directed by Bigelow (the you-know-who's ex wife); -theproducers held the movie -regarding to festival exhibitions- for adirect rivaling with Avatar.(all the magazines and blockbusterafficionados who like to make comparisons -silly comparisons- love it!)this item is also related to the first "if". -wasn't "America's selfaffirmation of supremacy in war", or "bonus propaganda" (Avatar was"onus propaganda", who disagree with the in command American militaryprime)When i say Bonus Propaganda, i'm referring to the subjective movieinclination to promote the America's great ego about invading othercountries who disagree with their values.

This review is from: The Hurt Locker (Amazon Instant Video) This is a movie about 3 US soldiers in the streets of Bagdad during their last month of rotation in the bomb squad. Its a good movie. I liked it. I wasnt unhappy that I rented it. I might have even given it four stars had it not been for the massive amounts of 5 star hype this movie was getting.Note to the marketing people - sometimes you can kill your pet project by promising too much. If you brag your coffee, which is really in fact the best tasting coffee in the world - can cure cancer. Guess what? People completely forget about the good taste and just bash your product because its all BS that it can cure cancer. So stop with the movie of the decade. Stop with the oscar nominee most deserving BS. just stop it. This movie has been made at least 4 times this decade. with another 3 or 4 cable tv stories to go with it. This movie is not unique. HOWEVER, ITS A GOOD MOVIE. WELL Made. Good acting. and thats good enough.

well to be fair, this is not my favourite sort of film - war movie,hand-held camera, grainy, almost colourless film. It was certainlysuspenseful in parts, but for me it was a little too long... I'dclearly got the message of the addictive nature of theadrenaline-fueled rush of war, long before the movie was over. So Ifound myself a little bored by it all in the last half hour. Now I amall for women's rights and us being recognized as formidable equals, but I have to confess that I was disappointed that this is the firstmovie that has got a woman the top award for direction.... because amore blokey film could not have been made! And I too see it as aPRO-WAR film and what's more a PRO-IRAQI-WAR film! There is not a whiffof femininity in this film! Or am I stereo-typing what I think whatshould be the kind of movies made by women. It's just that I believethat in such a male-dominated industry there are more than enough ofthese films being made. As I write this though, I reflect, DOES thismovie illustrate that Kathryn Bigelow IS a formidable equal in theindustry!

The Hurt Locker is one of the most overrated movies ever. Althoughthere are some good sequences in the film, they never really amount toanything. There is very little plot in the movie. In other words, thisfilm has no purpose. Most of the characters are cardboard cut-outs. Theonly exception to this is the protagonist of the story(whatever littlethere is)played brilliantly by Jeremy Renker. The film meanders allover the place. There are episodes in the film which are very looselyconnected (if at all) to each other. This certainly isn't my idea of"The Best War Film In Years", etc... Watch Platoon, Full Metal Jacket,Saving Private Ryan instead. They are far better examples of the genre.Kathryn Bigelow's direction is one of the weakest efforts I have seenand I will be highly surprised if she wins the Academy Award this year.Indeed, I am astounded that she was nominated at all. Just because sheis a woman is no reason for a nomination. Michael Mann for PublicEnemies was a much stronger contender. All in all, I feel this is anaverage, flawed film which suffers from a weak screenplay and terribledirection. Watch it at your own risk. If you liked Platoon or the otherwar films I mentioned, then there is a good chance you will hate thisone.

I agree with all the negative reviews and none of the positives. Howdid I ever get conned into watching this! oh that's right it won thebest picture Oscar WTF!!! This must surely go down in history as themost undeserving best picture EVER. I have never served in the militarybut even I could see all the inaccuracies and inconsistencies in thisfilm. Dear Kathryn if you are going to make a wildly inaccurate warfilm make something along the lines of 'Inglorious Basterds' don't putit in such a contemporary and closely scrutinized setting. There musthave been technical experts working on this film? I can only think theysabotaged this film intentionally. This film is about on par with TVepisodes of 'Combat' or 'McHales Navy' except they were entertaining.I'm probably overstating this films short comings but my expectationswere so high it really was disappointing how little entertainmentfactor there was.Just read some more of the other negative reviews here and I now wonderif a petition can be made to have the Oscar stripped from thisembarrassment. There would be at least 100 signatories here.

The Hurt Locker was surprisingly good. I thought it was going to beanother war movie, but it was more about humans and their characters.Director Kathryn Bigelow scores big with this movie. Tightly written byMark Boal, the story centers around soldiers doing the ultra-dangerousjob of disarming bombs during combat operations. A new commander (asergeant) is foolish in his approach, as though he couldn't care lessabout dying. So he puts his team in danger as well. There is a push andpull to keep this new commander from getting everyone killed, while thecity falls into chaos with deadly hostility everywhere. The suspense isstrong and the ending is surprising. This is one of those "war" movies that doesn't really take a politicalstand, but focuses on human interaction. Bigelow handles the action andher actors extremely well. The whole cast, including those playingminor characters, gives honest performances. Good to see actorsdepicting characters in such situations with subtlety.

Presciently, I caught up with this on the same day as it emergedvictorious at the Oscars. I had watched a few films about America'slatest conflicts  BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001), JARHEAD (2005) and REDACTED(2007)  but, in spite of the little-known cast (apart from nice cameosby Ralph Fiennes and Guy Pearce), it is easily the best of the lot.Incidentally, I was familiar with only a few of Bigelow's previousefforts but I plan to make amends throughout this week: it is ironic, however, that for a woman to win an Oscar it took her making a man'skind of film! Anyway, echoing the feeling of some others here, Iapproached this with some trepidation believing it had nothing new tooffer; to be sure, the idea of a reckless boffin was not reallyoriginal (in fact, it has been a good 60 years since The Archers dealtwith this very subject within a WWII context in THE SMALL BACK ROOM!)but, for a modern film, I admit it is well above average  while I amat it, I also intend to catch up with several titles of recent vintageI missed out on for whatever reason. I still need to check out AVATAR(2009), by the way  it is also scheduled for this week, hopefullyalong with James Cameron's Extended Version of THE ABYSS (1988)  but Iwas glad that the subtle, if all-important, work performed by the sounddepartment on THE HURT LOCKER was recognized at the expense of the morebombastic{sic} aural experience that AVATAR is bound to be. To get backto the film under review, Jeremy Renner's showy role notwithstanding,it was also atypical  thus highly commendable  for the leading actorfrom a war film to elicit this kind of attention but, then, ChristophWaltz from INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (2009) had it even better since he didwin the Supporting award! The film's episodic nature results in many atense situation (not least because the bomb-disposal unit's delicatejob is forever being observed by the obviously disapproving and vaguelymenacing locals) but also a few smaller moments (including Renner'srelationship with a native boy)  all of which, however, are vital tothe characterization (smoothing over some of its more predictableaspects) which, as already intimated, is what has singled this one outfor praise (hence, the Best Original Screenplay Oscar win was just asdeserving as the technical side of production). Finally, I found ithighly refreshing that THE HURT LOCKER refrains from really takingsides in the conflict or become a blatantly anti-war film; on thecontrary, it acknowledges the adrenalin rush that hardened war veteransget addicted to over time and are willing to sacrifice their lives (andsanity) to attain!

I recently watched this on DVD. I saw the nominations, I saw thereviews, and this was from the talented female director of Point Break,a film I'm very fond of. So my excitement at watching this was veryhigh. Unfortunately, in what seems to be a constant tread at themoment, this film for me doesn't quite justify the hype. Damn thoseover eager critics who refer to this as a "nerve shreddingmasterpiece". It's not by the way.Don't get me wrong. This is a good film. It reminded me of "Tigerland",the 2000 film which starred Colin Farrell. In that film Colin played acharacter who's a bit of a rebel, a bit of a risk taker, a guy whodoesn't seem to give a damn, and the lead actor here displays similarcharacteristics. He is played with confidence by Jeremy Renner and heis one to watch in the future. He was apparently very close to beingoffered Mad Max 4 based on his performance in this. The style of this film is down and dirty gritty, all shaky cam to givethat documentary style to proceedings. The story if you're not familiaris very simple. A bomb disposal team stationed in Iraq defuse bombs, and each one becomes riskier than the last. There is some combat inbetween each bomb threat and some character development within theteam. We see how the new leader to the bomb disposal group goes abouthis job, which surprises the rest due to his almost reckless attitudeand daring personality. He doesn't think, he just does and this causessome conflict within the group. It also makes for some tense momentsand some interesting character conflicts. On a more disappointing level, there are parts of this film where not alot happens, and although this may be true to life, it doesn't exactlymake for riveting entertainment. Talky interludes between the actionmade me lose interest from time to time. Scenes that you think areleading somewhere don't really lead anywhere. A subplot for exampleinvolving our lead going on a quest to find the killer of a young localboy takes him to a house and a confrontation with a suspect, only forour lead to run out of the house again and back to base camp. That wasa bit pointless mate! Did you just need a jog? As i've said, this is agood film. at best it's tense and gritty, and it's shot in adocumentary style, and it has a good cast doing a good job. Just don'texpect a ... what was it ... a "nerve shredding masterpiece". If youwant that, go watch "Eden Lake" or "Inside"

This is quite simply the best movie in almost ten years, and the bestwar movie I've ever seen. It's a psychological drama, a suspensethriller, and an action flick all rolled into one unbelievablyentertaining package. It's about the Iraq war, but phenomenally thereis no political statement being made. It's simply an almost documentarylook at war and the mechanics of being in a war. Kathryn Bigelow haslong been a fine director, but nothing on her resume prepared me forthe absolute mastery she shows here. And unknown actor Jeremy Renner isperfect in the great leading role. He brings remarkable complexity tohis part-cowboy part-genius bomb-defuser. He's wonderfully supported byAnthony Mackie. But Bigelow is the real revelation. She's made a moviethat is one for the ages.

I wasn't expecting much from this movie. But I happy to say I reallyenjoyed it. Great set pieces that delivers loads of intense action. This was more like Jarhead, but only better. Film does well to mix theright type of action and humour and still not lose it's way with thestory. Performance wise, everyone was great in it. Jeremy Renner playsthe mentally tortured soldier role very well. I liked his characterfrom the start, even though he was a bit of reckless maverick, I stillliked him. Anthony Mackie just keeps getting better and better, and inmy opinion he's definitely one the best black actors out there. Ithought he was absolutely great in this. David Morse continues to bereliable, Ralph Fiennes makes a short comedic cameo as a privatecontractor, and Brian Geraghty impresses as the paranoid Sgt Eldrigde.Kathryn Bigelow is a director who has made some really good movies,Near Dark and Point Break being two of them. She's made a war moviethat isn't the usual USA gung ho crap. It's a true tale about whatsoldiers are facing each day on the frontlines of Iraq and Afghanistan. And one that raises the question, what exactly are they fighting toprotect? Go see!

Academy award winner for movie? Not. At a stretch, maybe academy awardwinner for documentary, which it had more of a feel of. I wasn't reallysure of all the reasons that I felt that the movie did not live up toits hype and awards. The more I read the review of veterans and thosein the military I understand a big part of it. Though suspenseful to apoint, the movie seemed totally unbelievable as far as the protocol andprocedures in military life. I have not served in the military but Ihave seen enough movies to know how totally unrealistic it was.Watching Jeremy Renner was like watching an old ego driven sheriff inthe old west telling his deputies to stand back while he takes care ofthe bad guys. I envisioned him sticking his thumbs into his belt loops, pulls up his britches saying "Yep, y'all just stand back, I've got it"and walks down the street to meet the baddie.I actually enjoyed Jeremy Renner's acting as he brought his characterto life but not Academy award worthy. At the same time, do we reallythink he'd be riding his 'friend' like a bucking bronco and staringdown a careening taxicab coming right at him? He was just anunbelievable character, in a movie with a weak plot (was there a plot?)with an inevitable ending. Walk, disarm, fight, repeat, ad nauseam. Thesupporting staff did their job well given what they had to work with.Overall, I did find the movie interesting as far as the rover, the bombsuit and the special effects of the inevitable blasts. I'm glad that Ionly got the movie from the $1 rental machine. The movie was okay. Notgreat, not awful.

This whole film should have lasted 45 minutes - maximum. Although aninteresting concept/theme, it really did not develop as a story. Oncethe initial idea of a brave (stupid?) bomb disposal expert (cowboy?)are introduced, and this happens very early in the film, the rest isrepetitious. Characters were not explored, and aspects of the locationand politics were ignored. There was some nice insight into theappalling difficulties faced by troops in such a foreign environment, and the difficulties in differentiating between friend and foe. But theway in which the unit operated stretched belief! Individualperformances were good, and special effects were adequate, but notenough to overcome the basic lack of content.
totalz (04 May 2012)
This one is probably as worst as "Vantage Point"! Some scenes' setupsare unbelievably stupid!! Actually all the bomb scenes are stupid.1st bomb scene: "remote detonation(!!)", the bomber just has to showhis face, and to detonate the bomb when the bomb disposal specialist iswalking away.2nd bomb scene: 1+7 bombs, kinda in middle of a T-junction ofresidential area, half abandoned. Bomber is observing on few floors upof the building facing the T-junction. Once the specialist find all thebombs, the bomber starts to walk down stairs in a mini-fast pace.Specialist starts to disarm the bombs (one by one?), bomber keepswalking downstairs. The specialist is done and find a wire that lead tothe side of the building, where the wire can be connected by a batteryand detonate the bombs. The bomber walks out of the building, walkalong the building, stops in front of the specialist for half a minute, specialist holds up the fuse he disarmed from a bomb, the bomber walksaway.Let's pause here, 1st scene, one bomb, powerful enough to destroy asmall building. 2nd scene, 8 bombs, and has to detonate about 10-12meters away, with a battery!!LOL!3rd bomb scenes: 6-7 bombs in a car trunk, car parked funny next to aUN building. UN building, guarded, how can that happen!? Bomber, shootthe car from roof of a building not far. Car bursts in flame, specialist distinguishes the fire, once done, he tries to find theinitiating system of the bombs...Sniper scene, most stupid, which I'm not gonna waste any more timetyping it up......

The consensus here regarding the greatness of this film has changedconsiderably over the last few months. When it first appeared it wasregarded as a so-so Iraqi war drama but over time the hype has raisedthe film to iconic status. Recent BAFTA awards (what were theythinking?) confirm that thinking. I saw the movie several months agoand I still believe it is a good movie, well worth watching as it hassome tense moments that really are "edge of the seat" stuff but thebiggest miss with this film is the main character. Me, I like to likethe main character(s). The film starts off impressively due entirely toGuy Pearce's performance as SSG Matt Thompson but then he gets killed!I couldn't possibly like his replacement SSG William James. He is onestupid yet incredibly lucky soldier who risks his own life and the lifeof his colleagues. He is certainly no hero. If I had liked him thisfilm could have been a 10/10 not a 8/10. Further, I discovered this tooearly into the story and my impression doesn't change when the DVD kidgoes missing and is presumably found very dead. The real highlight for me was the encounter with the British andsubsequent sniper scenario. I thought it was brilliant, but either sidewas a just too much Hollywood cliché. Going home to his loving family,a family, by the way that James finds droll and boring and hissubsequent return to service was just the nail in the coffin. If it wasup to me, Pearce would have been cast in the lead role, he would havebeen killed right near the end and the film would have beensensational. District 9 will be getting my vote for the standout pic ofthe year.
nickdefazio (29 April 2012)
After reading numerous reviews of the movie by veterans, I feel obligedto share my opinion, the opinion of someone who knows very little aboutwar like 95% of moviegoers. First let me say, yes, the film requiresconsiderable suspension of disbelief and I don't blame any war veteranfrom not being able to do this--I don't know that I would be able toeither. The director could have done more research and she should have. But this film is not a documentary. And no, it is not objective. Irespect the film for its phenomenal acting, cinematography, and yes, direction. Despite its long and often disjointed scenes, I feltconsiderable suspense for most of the film. I was successfully drawnin. I could see how it would be easy to find the film intolerable if Iwere a veteran. I could also see how it would be easy to find hundredsor thousands of films about FBI agents intolerable because surely thefilms would miss so many details describing what this honorableprofession is like. The film was made for people like me, people who, despite watching numerous four-star war movies, are truly oblivious tothe nature of war. I've never been shot at. I've never held a gun. ButI believe that doesn't prevent me from recognizing talent and beauty, and so I do highly recommend the film to anyone who won't hold itsawards against it.

I recorded this when it appeared on UK Channel 4. I was looking forwardto it because of all the Oscar hype etc etc. I did manage to watch itto the end, but I fast-forwarded a few of the closing scenes.I'm nothing to do with the military, but it was just so unrealistic.Gung-ho James going "off-piste" and doing stuff no one in their rightmind would do. There are systems for doing stuff in the army and youdon't survive long by needlessly stepping outside them. Got a robot?Use the robot! - what idiot puts his life on the line for no reason. And the Iraqis all appeared to be stupid or weird for reasons Icouldn't fathom.Sorry, this was poor stuff. Read some of the low score reviews fromserving soldiers here and on metacritic, they'll tell you it like itis.
Claudio Carvalho (26 April 2012)
In the post-invasion of Iraq, three American soldiers from theanti-bomb squad live the tension of the chaotic Baghdad disarmingbombs. Their lives are affected by the daily duty, facing the hostilityof the invaded people in a devastated country."The Hurt Locker" is a good drama of war disclosed through the eyes ofthree American soldiers, living far from their families and country, ina hostile environment. It is so sad to see the cradle of civilizationdestructed by bombardments and the population oppressed by invadersthat have to follow orders and jeopardize their lives and sanity in aforeign country. If their personal lives are so affected having thepower, imagine the humiliated Iraqi population living in such unhealthycondition. There are witty lines, like the American soldiers tellingthat they are friends or James telling that the taxi drive would becomean insurgent after the treatment of the soldiers. The contrast in theend, with the lead character Sergeant William James going peacefullywith his wife and son to a supermarket while the population of Baghdadlives in the chaos is heartbreaking. The corny scene of the Americansoldier trying to disarm the bomb is ridiculous. The nomination of thismovie, which was released straight-to-video in Brazil, to the Oscar isanother joke of the Academy. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Guerra ao Terror" ("War to the Terror")
