In London, the sideshow troupe of Doctor Parnassus promises to the audiences a journey to the Imaginarium, an imaginary world commanded by the mind of Doctor Parnassus where dreams come true. In the stories that Doctor Parnassus tells to his daughter Valentina, to the midget Percy, and his assistant Anton, he claims to have more than one thousand years however, when he felt in love for a mortal, he made a deal with the devil Mr. Nick trading his immortality per youth. As part of the bargain, he promised his son or daughter to Mr. Nick on the sixteenth birthday. Valentina now is almost in the doomed age and Doctor Parnassus bets with Mr. Nick that whoever seduces five souls in the Imaginarium will have Valentina as a prize. Meanwhile the troupe rescues Tony that was hanged on a bridge by the Russians that explains why he had been chased and he joins the group. Tony and Valentina fall in love for each other and the jealous Anton discovers that his competitor is a liar.

I'm giving this a 3 out of 10, only because the CG visuals in thefantasy sequences were cool looking. The majority of the movie is anonsensical mess that goes from "interesting," to "boring" to"annoying" during the course of its very long two hours. If someone hadhad the sense to cut out all the boring parts, and the screaming andbitching that these cardboard characters did, then we might have had anamazing 60 minute movie. But studios think movies need to be at least90 minutes, and Gilliam is apparently incapable of coherentstorytelling, so we end up with a turd on the screen. We will rememberHeath Leger for much better roles, movies where he played actualcharacters. In this tedious turdburger he shows up about 20 minutesinto the movie hanging by his neck, left for dead. As distasteful asthis is, it is not by far the worst thing about the movie. I reallywonder where Gilliam, or anyone who greenlit this script thought thedrama would come from. I'm assuming they looked at this as a drama, because lord knows there's no humor in it. There's no real dramaeither. The bogus "bets" between an old drunk and a devil are soill-defined, and of so little interest to the old drunk that they can'tgenerate the slightest dramatic tension. It's really a shame when a lotof talented people put a lot of time and money into something that issuch a stinker.

This review is from: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (DVD) I saw this video at a friend's house and was impressed by the creativity and vivid imaginations of the actors and directors. Johnny Depp is exceptionally versatile and his portrayal of characters is outstanding. Although this particular film was not well received in the box office, I think it rates right along with "Alice in Wonderland" of recent release. The imagery was fascinating. It's so much fun to let your mind expand with the imagery presented. I purchased a copy for my film library and watch it to catch details I missed on the previous viewings.

This review is from: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (DVD) This was my first time using Amazon.com Video On Demand. It is very simple to use. Find a movie that you want to watch now in the Video On Demand category. Choose and click on "want to rent". This will take you to the License Agreement which you must agree to. Then to the "bill to..." section just like you are purchasing something from Amazon. Use your bank account or gift card/ promotional balance. You will then be taken back to the black screen to choose if you want to see it now or within the next 24 hours. I chose The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) because I like the versitle performances of Heath Ledger. He was so different in every movie he does. Since Doctor Parnassus is the last film he was working on at the time of his unexpected death, January 22, 2008, I just had to see it. Plus I like fantasy movies that take you to a dream-like place of the strange and bizarre, a la The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Two-Disc Special Edition) (1939), Blue Bird (1940)Alice in Wonderland (1933), Alice in Wonderland (2010). I had no problems with Video On Demand. I could even put it on Full Screen. Periodically, I had to move my mouse so that my monitor did not go into a black screen sleep stage, but it does not interupt the movie. Once you begin Video On Demand, you can not stop the movie. You must watch it all the way through. The movie ends at the very end of the end credits and if they have a surprise after the end credits, it is in their too. The picture was crystal-clear. It was not blurry, scratchy nor pixeled. Once again Heath Ledger kept me glued to the screen with another magnificant performance as he did in The Order (2003), Brokeback Mountain (Full Screen Edition) (2005), Casanova (2005), The Dark Knight (Widescreen Single-Disc Edition) (2008). Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell continued the transformation scenes that Heath Ledger did not film. Christopher Plummer was perfectly cast as Doctor Parnassus. Verne Troyer has an obnoxious role, not funny like his role in Austin Powers 3-Pack (International Man of Mystery / The Spy Who Shagged Me / In Goldmember). Tom Waits was perfect with comedic delivery as the develish "Nick". Check out the other films of Terry Gilliam, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Jabberwocky (1976), Time Bandits (1979), Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1989), The Fisher King (1991), The brothers Grimm (2005), Tideland (2005). His next project: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2011).

This is quite possibly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It is truly unfortunate that the great Heath Ledger will always be remembered as having this turd for his last role rather than the outstanding Joker.I had wandered into this film hoping for something in the line of the brilliant Stardust. Unfortunately, this is more on a par with Death Race, if it was directed by Uwe Boll, that is. There are several ugly and distasteful characters thrown at you from the start, but fortunately they are left completely undeveloped so we are spared their story. It appears that the film is more based upon trippy visuals than any kind of actual story line. There is some muddled bit about bets with the devil to steal souls, or something like that. I found I didn't care for long, and you likely won't either. After 41 minutes of this utter crap, we gave up.As a side note, the disk is extraordinarily annoying. It INSISTS on running with BD Live, so you can access behind the scenes info while teh movie drones on. You have to actually allow it to do this, then cancel and re-start the movie to get out of it. STUPID!

I thought going in that the transitions of Ledger to the other handsome devils would be jarring and detract from the enjoyment of the film. For the most part, however, excluding Jude Law who stuck out like a sore thumb, this was not Parnassus' downfall. The magical realism approach benefited the film greatly and helped to disguise the death of the main character in ways I won't explain for fear of ruining some surprise. Gilliam sure does know how to make an imaginative landscape; CG or not the imagination scenes were pretty cool! Also Tom Waits was pretty fun as the devil. The other actors, for the most part, were forgettable (meaning they get the job done and nothing more) except for Vern Troyer-- who was AWFUL! Really monotone, no inflection...no wonder he never spoke in Austin Powers! Just terrible. His character could have been cut, for all I care. Ugh. Also the pacing of the film was sort-of off. Gilliam, while a master of visual splendor, has always had this problem. The Fisher King, his early 90's "masterpiece" (I use the term lightly, I prefer "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" or Monty Python shtick personally) fell prey to the same elements of talk-talk-talk, not enough wild, intriguing panache. There were times during this film when I felt excessively bored and just wanted to go "back through the mirror" as it were. Also the denouncement lacked bite, when the big reveal of who Ledger's character was and what his motivations were. Ho-hum. This is just another example (see MirrorMask) of how visual splendor cannot save a movie that has a bad script. Though there were moments of supreme elation such as the first imagination sequence in the forest, the film product felt a bit too cobbled together and ultimately mundane to be regarded as anything but another mediocre Gilliam outing, much in the same vain as the ill-fated Brothers Grimm, which, actually, I enjoyed more than this movie.

One of Terry Gilliam's better films. Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, and Lily Cole give stand-out performances. It's Heath Ledger's lastfilm. He died during the film's production, and thanks to someinventive storytelling Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrel capablyfilled in to complete the film. While this may cause some film goersdifficulty I found it rather simple to suspend disbelief as theirappearance only occurs during those moments when the character resideswithin the Imaginarium.Gilliam is clearly fascinated by the act and art of story-telling, atheme he has addressed in nearly all of his films from "Time Bandits",through "The Brothers Grimm." Here that act is essential for lifeitself and the Universe as a whole to continue. The film moves fluidlyback and forth from a grim but real world and the fantastical world ofdreams.Christopher Plummer uses every trick he's learned over his very longand distinguished career to present a very complicated and difficult tocompletely pin down exactly who Dr. Parnassus might be. Surely we arepresented some very clear possibilities, but with the number of layersGilliam uses as the over-arching story progresses it would be verydifficult to assume any one is definitive, and that is not at all easyfor an actor to successfully achieve. Plummer shows us a loving parent,a drunken fool, a wise man of letters, a charlatan grifting for souls,a mystical priest/prophet, a homeless, penny-less bum. Opposite him isTom Waits' creepy and devilish Mr. Nick. Once again showing us thatthis musician song-writer has some acting prowess that deserves to beused and seen more often. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is a film (or story) about choices.Ones we make, ones' we wish we'd make, and knowing right from wrong. It's not clearly black and white as I just made it sound, and the filmends cryptically enough that we know the story continues. Dr. Parnassusmade a bargain many moons ago with an unsavory character, and must makeamends, that's the film we see before us from Gilliam, and likeShakespeare he reminds us that the world is a stage and we are butactors rounded with a little sleep wherein we dream.

There are movies that come along every once in a while and leave youpleasantly surprised. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is one ofthose.I was very curious about this film, but was cautiously curious as itseemed to be waaaaaaaaaay out there. And it is. But in the middle ofthe bizarre is a morality tale that is charming and instructive.Depp, Law and Farrell, seamlessly stand in for Ledger during fantasysequences that actually work better having Ledger replaced as it addsto the fun mess happening. The film has some of the most unique sets and effects seen this pastyear. It makes you wonder what the director might have done had he beengiven the Alice in Wonderland project and not Burton.Christopher Plumber and Tom Waits are excellent as the dueling forcesof good and bad. Necomers Andrew Garfield and Lily Cole bring a freshface and air to the proceedings. Verne Troyer, made famous for playingMini-Me in the Powers movies, is wonderful as the assistant toPlumber's Parnassus. Ledger brings his usual flair for the odd and asmentioned previously, Depp, Farrell and Law step in for Ledger and allthree deliver performances that enhance Ledger's. This is a definite rental for the curious and I bet, like me, you willwant to purchase it so you can experience the absolute joyfulbizarreness of it all as much as you can.

It would have been hard not to like this movie, since I had earlypreviews from friends that it is boring and pointless, so myexpectations were really down. I did watch it, nonetheless, and I amglad I did. If you ever watched Tideland, you know Terry Gilliam iscapable of works of terrible beauty, often concocted from the ugliestbits life can provide; such is this film. This is Heath Ledger's last film, he died during filming it, but hischaracter is not the main one, just the extra ingredient needed to takeall the important ones out of their equilibrium state. Because of thistragedic death, other actors came to fill up the role, such as JohnnyDepp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. And still, the important character, the Faust that can't keep himselffrom betting with a mischievous devil that isn't even very unfriendly,is Christopher Plummer's, who played marvelously at his age of 81. Iloved the way the devil was toying with him, addicted to playing gamesthat he didn't want to win in the end so that he keeps playing. Thevisuals were great, the atmosphere both miraculous and brooding, butrarely in the same time. And Lily Cole was cute and sexy as hell.Bottom line: a weird film that you need to think about to get at hismany hidden meanings, with beautiful imaginative imagery and greatactors. What is not to like?

This movie should have had a wider release. It is an epic fantasy that left me delighted throughout. The fact that so many friends came together to help Terry Gilliam finish production after the death of principle actor Heath Ledger peaked my interest and I was not disappointed. They finished it masterfully! The wending of time periods is smooth and seamless. The sets and effects stretch the imagination (Imaginarium). A classic 'sold his soul to the devil' story retold uniquely as only Terry Gilliam can.
Mash-the-stampede (06 May 2012)
To sum this film up in one term, i would have to say; "The Imaginariumof Doctor Parnassus" is a very BIZARRE film. No surprises there as itis written and Directed by Monty Python's own crazy genius, TerryGilliam. The film is dark yet funny at the same time. The story is fairly simpleand the special effects, though not exactly mind blowing are feelingdecent as well. The imaginarium scenes are very dream-like and I thinkif terry Gilliam accomplished anything from this film - it is surelythe perfect bizarre atmosphere and feelings of dreams or in othercases, nightmares. Most of the cast is great including the late, great Heath Ledger(though not his best role) as the main character of Tony. The otherversions of Tony most notably Depp, were sufficient (though notbrilliant) in their own portrayals of the imaginarium versions of HeathLedger's character. Same can't be said however for Colin Farrell'sportrayal as to put it as nicely as i can, was just out of place! Hedoesn't look anything like the other Tony's and he seemed like acompletely different character which is a shame as he is the lastversion of Tony to appear in the film and made me feel quite detachedfrom the original character. Not sure if this was Terry's intention butthen again - the whole film changed drastically after the unfortunatedemise of Heath Ledger. The rest of the cast were also very good especially Verne Troyer as thefiesty Percy and Christopher Plummer as the title character, DoctorParnassus. But the real star of the show who completely owned every scene he wasin, has to be Tom Waits as The devil. He was so un-believable evilwithout coming across as menacing or scary. He was more of a trickster.More mischievous and delivered all of his dialogue superbly with justthe right amount of humour and sincerity needed to pull off a Devilishportrayal that seemed so natural, almost as if he actually IS theDevil!Perfect casting!!!All up, an entertainingly strange film that works better if you have animagination!

Further, the trio of actors has donated their income with this film to HeathLedger's daughter to guarantee her financial situation in the future inmagnanimous attitudes. The duel between Doctor Parnassus and Mr. Nicktogether with the vision of the world of fantasy of Terry Gilliam isawesome. For those that liked this movie, I would like to recommend thealso surrealistic "O Homem Que Desafiou o Diabo". My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): "O Imaginário Mundo do Doutor Parnassus" ("TheImaginary World of Doctor Parnassus")

I had high expectations for this one,, very high!! If I had a ladderand it would represent my expectations it would reach into the skies! Ihave always loved Terry, ever since I was 16 year old kid, going to thecinema to see 12 Monkeys! and then I got to know all the other work thegood doctor Gilliam had made. and where to put this on the list of faveGilliam work is nut that hard 3 or fourth after Brazil at the numberone slot, then Time Bandits holds in at second! 12 Monkeys and FisherKing are pretty close! and then this marvelous adventure. An adventureunlike any other one have seen!! And people are screaming for originalmaterial, and one remake eats up the other. Michael Bay thinking wowit's been nearly 30 years ago since I was a spoiled little brat whocould go to the cinema and see Elm Street Horror, now that must neverhappen again, so I will do a remake of that so we spoil all the fun forthe kids. Here Comes Gilliam, sadly the man is not given enough work, but here he is with a movie that will lighten up your imagination. Thatwill dare you to use your brain! If you have a hunger for that, I admitit demands Braincells, and a broad view on religion, and a broad viewon life. Of Course Heath fans will watch this movie and think what theywill! But us Gilliam fans will have some new stuff to discuss, some newworlds to conquer! What a Great Movie, Loved It Loved It Loved It!!9/10 Hurra. David.

The latest in a long line of confounding Terry Gilliam movies that Ican't decide whether I love or hate, the inimitable Doctor Parnassuscomes fully equipped with the director's requisites: drasticallyeccentric characters, gorgeous cinematography, far-left-field humor, delicate plot and utterly befuddling dialog. The scenes set within theimaginarium itself are fantastic; dream logic-dominated landscapes onpar with Michel Gondry's best work, they encourage viewers to celebratethe fact that nothing is static and chaos is king. Unfortunately, thereal world scenes do nothing to tether the film to the ground in anyway, a function which was desperately needed. It's basically a movingpainting. You take away what you can and just accept that some parts ofit aren't supposed to be comprehended by anyone but the artist himself.

This review is from: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This was one of the worst movies I have ever sat completely through. I kept waiting for it to live up to all the hype that some reviewers gave it. Sadly, amazon sent me 2 copies of this horrible flick. I guess they thought that after pre-ordering the first one and mistakingly ordering it a second time I must have been a true fan. I sent the first copy back and the second was sold on ebay the next day. Please if you are thinking of watching this consider that you will never get these 2 hours back. You could do so much more with your life rather than watch this strange film that I never could get a grip on. Take my opinion for what it's worth but for me my money would be better spent elsewhere.

oh dear. I was expecting to find this disappointing (like most ofGilliam's efforts since Time Bandits) but even I was surprised at justhow disappointing this was. The acting was atrocious (Ledgerparticularly uncomfortable I thought) with only Plummer carrying it offwith any aplomb. Gilliam simply cannot direct actors. The effects weregoodish, but nothing spectacular - most averagely good films these dayshave great SFX anyway, so we've come to expect a lot more. But therewas so much wrong with this film it's hard to know where to start. OK,1) plot - this was badly conceived and badly executed. We should havestarted with Valentia's birth and gone on from there. 2) acting - asmentioned above, truly excruciating in parts: Lily Cole is NOT anactress (Charlie Brooks from EastEnders would have been a betterchoice), Andrew Garfield has never been more annoying, and Verne Troyercan only play Mini-Me (shame, 'cos I loved him in Celebrity BigBrother). And as for Ledger, I thought he was great as The Joker, buthere he was treading water, and yes, as other posters have written,it's not his fault he didn't know this was his last screen performance.3) the script: it was lamentably unwitty and undeveloped, like a firstdraft scribbled on the back of an envelope. Failed to deliver any ofthe magic or drive that the film so badly needed. Altogether, a massivefailure, which despite its adversities, momentously fell short of itspromise. Gilliam has always been a patchy director (Time Bandits,Fisher King good, Brazil, Twelve Monkeys OK; Baron Munchhausen,Brothers Grimm execrable) but this was bottom of the pile for me. SorryTel, 'cos I loved your Python animations...

Basically your enjoyment of the movie comes down to this- If you love Terry Gilliam's fantasy films, you will love/like this one.- If you don't like his fantasy films (or any of his films) don't bother.I for one loved it. It is a fitting final film for Heath Ledger (who played the Joker, and passed away halfway through the filming) as well another masterpiece by Terry Gilliam. It may not be as brilliant as Brazil, Baron Munchhausen, Fear and Loathing, or 12 Monkeys, but it is definitely good . . . from the point of view of someone who loves his films. So, if you love his films, this one is worth your time.

THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS Â CATCH IT ( B ) The movie willalways be remembered as Heath ledger's last movie. I was excited towatch the movie though I never found the story intriguing at all. Themovie started off good though I was stunned to see that ChristopherPlummer is the Dr. Parnassus not Heath ledger. The movie story lineisn't that strong it's the typical devil's bet which we have listenedand seen hundred times in children's book but what makes this movieunique is its setup and characterization. The magicians traveling in ahorse cart was interesting. Though at times it becomes quite immatureduring special effects sequences but nonetheless the strong presenceand performances of the actors makes it watchable and enjoyable. Heathledger is a legendary actor though it's sad that he never was able tofinish his work on the project but still it was fun to see him one moretime. Director did a smart move by putting Heath Ledger in real worldand Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell in imaginarium world.Johnny Depp and Jude Law were good but it was Colin Farrell who trulydid a great job in the ending, he was charming and cunning and gave aperfect ending to heath's Character "Tony". Christopher Plummer wasamazing as always. It's so good to see Andrew Garfield's talent onemore time and that makes me more and more excited about the SpidermanReboot project. He is one hell of a talented British Lad. Lilly Cole isastonishing, she looks like a doll and very graceful. I really wish tosee here again in upcoming movies, her performance and whole look wasone of the best parts of the movie. Overall the movie is a good timepass, it's imaginative and silly at times but still you can see thedirector's vision in it. Watch it, its enjoyable.

I didn't care for this movie; it's like a crazy Tim Burton film. I didget the main plot which is Dr. Parnassus is immortal and has made adeal with the devil. The devil will get his daughter's soul on her 16thbirthday. It's just 2 days till her birthday and the devil has made anew offer. If the Dr. can collect 5 souls before her birthday, thedevil won't take her. I understood that part. It's the rest that Ididn't get.The daughter and the Dr.s followers find Heath Ledler, whose name isTony, hanging underneath a bridge. They save him and then it's day andit looks like this is the 16th century, however, Tony still has hiscell phone. And then it goes back and forth between fantasy in the Dr.sfun house and what looks like currant times and olden times, likebefore cars. It was just too weird.FINAL VERDICT: I don't recommend it.

I think this movie is:1. Confusing2. Too much color to be consistent3. Leaves too much guessing on the part of the audience. It doesn't have a strong storyline. 4. Not very clear about what's going on if anything
