According to the tacit rules of Blair Witch, The Last Exorcism passesthe test. As Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) performs his lastexorcism in front of a documentary camera, young director Daniel Stammmakes it look real enough, as Blair Witch did, with the requisite jerkyhand-held camera, low key lighting, and local-looking cast.Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) may be possessed, and her dad, Louis (LouisHertham) is certain she is, and Reverend Cotton lost his faith long agoto morph into an evangelical charlatan. But all that changes whenlittle Nell exhibits some Linda Blair qualities, especially thevomiting pea soup, to make even the camera crew scared.Different from most other exorcism films, Last is the first I know ofto downplay deeply biblical connections and have the exorcist recognizethat Nell needs psychiatric help. And no one, not even Nell, reallygoes over the top dramatically. So I'm left with a tidy horror flicknot adhering to the genre's demand for junk, but rather responding asanyone of us might faced with a strange teen and even stranger fatherand brother. As a former altar boy, I experienced nuns who could scare the hell outof you, so nothing truly scary seems to happen in this film. Despitethe indoctrinations, I'm agnostic to this day.

THE LAST EXORCISM Â CATCH IT (B+) I think, if a movie leave you Dazedand Confused, its kind of worth (B+) rating. The Last Exorcism left meGoogle for hrs in search of the answers from the makers. WTF justhappened in the End? And Why? The Last Exorcism is a latest ventureinto the long list of handy cam style film making like Cloverfield,Quarantine and Paranormal Activity Franchise. The movie starts with aReverend (Patrick Fabian) documenting his Last Exorcism and telling thedocumenters that how fake is Demons and Exorcism thing. He uses topractice all this just so he can feed his family but ever since he readabout deaths during the Exorcism he has refuse to do Exorcism anymore. This time he will be doing his Last Exorcism, just to show how fakeactually it is. After that he goes to Louisiana and meets Nell (AshleyBell) and his family (Dad & Brother). Then the whole movie takes ahumors take on the Exorcism and shows how Exorcism can be done totallywith fakeness without the people knowing at all. Till then the conceptof Revered was coming true that there are no demons at all but whenthey left Nell's house and stay at the motel, in the middle of thenight Reverend sees Nell in his room acting totally Bizarre. He callsup his documenter friends and takes her to hospital. Now the things getreally tense and I as an Audience left in oblivion that what to believenow? Whether she is possessed Or Schizophrenic? Later, when reverendvisit their house they found Caleb (Nell' brother)'s mouth cut openwith Knife, his dad takes him to hospital and Caleb leaves a note toReverend that "Don't leave her Alone with Dad". Now, Nell is left alonewith the Reverend & his team. Reverend receives a call from hospitalmentioning that Nell is pregnant. (Twisted) after that till the secondExorcism, I was 100% convinced that Nell (Ashley Bell)'s father isIncest and she is Possessed but I was proved wrong after 2nd Exorcismwhen Nell(Ashley Bell) tell reverend that she had Sex with a Boy name(Logan) & she was very ashamed of it as a Christian. (At that point Ifound the whole thing really Lame and weird), So, it means she needspsycho therapy? On return Ravened accidentally meets up Logan, whotells him that he only once talk to Nell & He is Gay. Now, Reverendturns back to her house and hears Nell's screams from the woods, whenhe follows the screams he sees Nell (Ashley Bell) on table and herfather tied to the Tree by the local Church ministers and hisdisciples, and then she gives birth to something which is not Human atall. (She didn't look pregnant at all the entire time). They burn thenewly born child (Satan I Believe) in fire and fire rose extremely Highmaking Satan shape and noises. The reverend take the crucifix and runstowards it. (He finally Believes on Demons). The other documenters werehunted and killed by Caleb (Nell's Brother). (Twisted) The purpose ofwriting the entire story is to actually ask QUESTIONS & Give ANSWERS!!!So,(1) Was Nell actually Possessed or Schizophrenic?(2) Were the Local Church was Satan worshipers? And her father was theonly One against it?(3) The Ravened (Patrick Fabian) was Consciously chosen because he is aNon-Beleiver of Demon's existence? (4) Caleb (Brother) was part of theChurch's Satan activities as in the middle Nell says that Her brothertook their mother's death really hard and he doesn't Believe on Godanymore? So, was Nell (Ashley Bell) was also part of the Satan Churchas she was really close to her brother or she is just a Victim?ANSWERS: According to the Director "Daniel Stamm", her brother is partof the group and maybe she is too that's for people to figure out, there are little clues in the movie throughout. According to Producer"Eli Roth", the town's Church was a Satan Worshipers and that's whytheir father took Nell & Caleb from Church School because he didn'tlike all that! So, the church knew about the Ravened anti-Demon anticsso, they wanted to show Him and teach Him a Lesson. I Believe thatCaleb & Nell were part of Satan's Activities because God took theirMother after successful cancer operation, but maybe I am Wrong. OverallI can say if a movie Kept you captivating & Dazed in the end, its kindof Worth it! Give Time and thought to it, it needs time, in hurry youwill miss all the Minute details. P.S Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell,Caleb Landry Jones and Louis Herthum were INCREDIBLE in making all thisBelievable. Kudos, Ashley Bell did all the bends and contortions of herbody on her own. No special effects were used - she has Hypermobility.Superb!

Despite all the publicity about this little film what we actually haveis a tedious, monotonous, boring, embarrassing film made to fool thevery people we are seeing ridiculed on the screen. Because after all, they are trying to tell us something here aren't they? That middleAmerica is a bunch of uneducated, illiterate, poverty stricken moronsthat believe in UFO's landing, cults and.......a need for exorcisms.I am imagining someone in Louisiana with half a brian watching this andfeeling very let down that Hollywood has devised yet another way ofdisplaying how ignorant white trash populates part of the country. I find the film mundane. True, the last 5 minutes are disturbing butnot any more than Rosemary's Baby or Beat the Devil. And at least thosefilms were original. This borrows from every singleexorcist/satanic/possession/reality flick it can with no shame. This is tired, very tired. I'd give this a 3.

This movie is insulting to a five year old. The idea that we aresupposed to believe enough in what they are selling to actually beanything more than insulted is, well... insulting! The chaoticconfusion, screaming, running around, soundtrack, accompanied byinexplicable video turned me off to the point that I left the viewingto make a drink. Creating an audio calamity and waving a camera aroundin all directions does not a film make. And regardless of this filmstechnical trend; it is certainly not a horror film but rather insultsall the previous horror film makers that have come before it. Thetrailer is totally misleading; a collection of all the brief comprehendable video shots that the movie contains wrapped up into what looks tobe an actual movie!

(PREPARE FOR SPOILERS BUT NOT ENOUGH TO GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY) This wasdirected by someone you've never heard of and starring actors you won'tbe able to place, there's only one reason for a movie such as the NewOrleans shot "Last Exorcism" to exist: to scare the bejeezus out ofyou.Produced by the "Hostel" creator which is the biggest name connected tothe project, the movie is an intense snatch of horror-suspense built inthe mold of "The Blair Witch Project" and "Paranormal Activity."Translation: It was shot on a shoestring and makes no apologies for it.Instead, it camouflages that low-budget pedigree - even embraces it byposing as a documentary. That way, its imperfections -- shot on video, jittery camera work -- are excusable. Better yet, they sharpen therealism, and the scare factor, when the brimstone hits the fan. When those scares do come, they're not the result of high-end digitaleffects. More often than not, they involve something bloody and blurrybeing thrust suddenly at the camera, then the camera spinning andslamming into door frames as the cameraman runs for his everlovin'life. You might not have heard of Patrick Fabian (who boasts an impressivestring of TV appearances) and Ashley Bell (who doesn't), but they don'tact like no-names. Their performances make "The Last Exorcism, " and --given the buzz the film has generated -- it just might return thefavor.Fabian plays a Baton Rouge preacher named Cotton Marcus (which explainsthe film's working title, "Cotton, " when it shot in New Orleans andSt. Bernard Parish last year). Cotton is charming through and through-- a born performer, according to his wife -- and he knows how to gethis congregation eating out of the palm of his hand. More important, healso knows how to manipulate them. That goes for sermons, and it goes double for exorcisms, a familyspecialty. But Cotton's got a secret: It's all a sham. After years ofhiding the truth, he's pulling back the curtain on the family business, inviting a film crew to document his final case to show how his fakeryworks. But this time, there's going to be a short supply of fakery. He'sheaded to the Sweetzer farm, south of New Orleans, where all hell isabout to break loose. It's there he meets young Nell (played by Bell),who is all innocent eyes and sweet smiles.Except when she's possessed and mutilating cattle. As good a job as Fabian does as the charming Cotton, Bell is evenbetter playing both sides of Nell's character. It's an eerietransformation, really, and it's a big reason the movie works.Although "The Last Exorcism" is shot and set in south Louisiana, audiences don't get an overabundance of NOLA scenery. That means --thankfully -- they don't get an overabundance of Louisiana clichés,either. Director Daniel Stamm is more subtle than that. He uses theregion only for atmosphere, for the spooky vibe that descends on thebayou when the sun sets.Stamm also leaves a lot of questions unanswered in his breathless,go-for-broke final act, which raises hysteria to a fever pitch butnever really slows down enough to explain what the heck just happened. Here's what I do know happened, though: When I left the theater, I wasexhausted and freaked out and totally bejeezus-less. And for a moviesuch as "Last Exorcism, " that's the perfect ending, it's so intense itleft a lot of people still sitting in their seats moments into thecredits..

You know what? I'm sick and tired of people complaining about Horror films that use the "found footage" style. I say, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Simple as that. It's not like these type of movies trick the audience into seeing them. Films like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY make it blatantly obvious in the marketing of the movie that it's going to be from this genre type. Everybody who complains about this style acts like they were duped into seeing the film. Like they didn't know what they were getting themselves into in the first place. I don't know what people expect from movies like this? Something mind blowing? They act like the idea of "documentary" style Horror films has yet to reach it's maximum potential. As if it's the marketing or directors fault and not just the execution of the "found footage" genre.I've heard so many people complain over the years (and this isn't including the negative reviews on this site) in Horror circles about how much they hate this type of Horror movie style. No matter what the film is, I always hear someone say, "I hate that whole shaky camera effect" or something along those lines. I say if you don't enjoy it, the next time a movie like this comes out, avoid it at all costs. No matter what the premise is, if you don't like the "found footage" movie style, then no film in this small Horror genre is going to win you over. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT? Nope. QUARANTINE? Nope. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY? Nope. DIARY OF THE DEAD? Nope, nope, double nope! So for those of you reading this who might have missed the freaking memo, THE LAST EXORCISM is one of those type of films. Now, everybody reading this, all of you collectively click the "back" button on the top left corner of your computer screen. I'm sure there is some other random Horror movie you guys have to senselessly bash for no reason.Personally, I enjoy the "found footage" or "shaky camera" styles as some people call them. I can appreciate it because I like the idea of "real" Horror footage being "found." It's almost like you're seeing some rare film that the government or whoever didn't want you to see. It's a fun idea and sometimes that's what you're looking for in a Horror movie. In my opinion this is just another genre type like "Grindhouse", "Cult" and "Giallo" film making. It's something new and different. I've been watching Horror movies since I was a little kid back in the early 80's. I'm no "newbie" to the scene. I can enjoy a wide array of film types, some of which I like more so than others. With movies like THE LAST EXORCISM, you have to be in the mood for this type of camera style. Vague images, off centered camera angles, dark picture quality, loud sound distortion. It's all a part of the "found footage" genre. The problem usually with movies like this is that most audience members can tell the difference between actors and real people in a documentary. I would imagine this is one of the key reasons why people dislike this style over all. It's actors pretending to be in a real, life threatening, spontaneous situation. Sometimes it works very well, sometimes not so much. THE ZOMBIE DIARIES, I'm looking in your direction!THE LAST EXORCISM is done well enough for this genre type. The actors, setting and over all execution are handled with a sense of dedication and loving enthusiasm. You can tell that the people involved with this project wanted it to work. They believed in the idea. The only real problem here is the "been there, done that" plot. This movie borrows themes from a lot of other (and much better) possession type Horror films. There's elements of THE EXORCIST, ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE ENTITY here. All of which are presented to the audience as if we've never seen them before. Heck, I'm sure some of the young kids in the audience have never even heard of those films! Some of THE LAST EXORCISM is a little corny (a young girl giving you a stern "possessed" look at the camera just doesn't evoke fear without the proper mood) but those moments can be over looked because the movie is still some what enjoyable. The story is about a minister named Cotton Marcus performing his last "exorcism" on a young girl. What's the girls name you ask? Why, Nell of course! Kinda' like in that weird Drama movie with Jodie Foster! Thankfully, these two films have nothing in common. Anyways, Cotton has become a little jaded with the concept of exorcisms over the years after reading a newspaper article about a young boy being killed during one of them. Ever since then, he's had nightmares about his own son being killed as a result of an exorcism he performs. Cotton has now made it his point to expose exorcisms as being false to the general public, so another child doesn't have to die during this unconventional practice. He also views this deed (or in this case, the documentary) as "God's work" and thinks he's exposing a primitive and some what dangerous ritual. Needless to say, things turn out to be much different for the minister when the claims of possession seem to be true.THE LAST EXORCISM is an interesting idea at first glance but in the end it's a mixed bag over all. On top of some of the more unoriginal ideas and corny moments, the movie just doesn't deliver as a Horror film. With a PG-13 rating, the director can't do much in the way of gore and dark "evil" subject matter. You keep hoping the movie will deliver some good tension but it never does.Yet, there are a few moments that do push the envelope considering the restrictive PG-13 rating. The front cover of the DVD gives away one of the more shocking moments (nice one marketing people) but there are a few other well done scenes of Horror. The young actress who plays Nell (Ashley Bell) does a pretty good job considering some of the more "intimate" scenes of evil possession. I have no doubt this movie would have been rated R back in the 1980's despite it's not all that shocking. It's the subject matter that would have pushed the buttons. These days, the MPAA let's Horror films get away with a lot more thank goodness.Gore Hounds, check it out for a few moments that might raise you eyebrows but don't expect anything too mind blowing. THE LAST EXORCISM is no AMITYVILLE HORROR or HELLRAISER. This movie is really just a "teen" Horror film. Cheap thrills for things that go "bump" in the night. In otherwords, it's a movie that will be played for years at teen sleep overs and complained about the following day. Forgotten a week later, lost in the clutter of todays hyper nonsense. The one thing this movie does have going for it is the production by Eli Roth. He didn't have anything to do with the over all direction (which might have made the film a little bit better if you ask me) but at least he did some of the production credit. It gives the movie a small sense of sophistication to an otherwise largely disliked movie style. In my opinion there are much better films in this genre. QUARANTINE, THE FORTH KIND and DIARY OF THE DEAD accomplish the over all idea and effect much better. Give them a shot before this one. If you're looking for a good movie about possession, try THE EXORCIST above anything else. It's a million times better than this film. That is, if you kids today can handle it.Over and out.
CUMSHOT (14 May 2012)
I saw this at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival on August 16th.-I had a bad feeling before the movie began when they introduced EliRoth & the two main actors, including the leading woman who plays thepossessed chick. Eli cracked way too many jokes, humoring & hyping upthe crowd. I thought this was a bad move, as if we're supposed to treatthis like a Scream-type experience. Fun, but enjoy the 'boo!'-likescares. I thought it would've been better off to just turn off thelights & start the movie, setting the mood for something terrifying. Itdidn't help that we were introduced the actors first, making it hard tobuy into the story.-There's way too much humor in this movie that it became impossible tosuspend my beliefs & be involved in the story.-After a suspenseful moment, it would be followed up by another wisecrack. The audience by far laughed more than letting out scares.-It's supposedly 'found footage'...but it has a score?! During allbuild ups for the suspenseful moments, you'll hear a note from a cello,or eerie ambiance as if you were watching a film...but we're supposedto believe that this is documentary video? -These were actors acting toa script, there was no sense of improv a la REC & REC 2. The exchangein dialogue, reactions appeared way too rehearsed.-There's one camera man filming this thing. But the editing/camera workwas amateurish. I.E. There's a shot of the main priest taking off hisblazer, then immediately cuts to the opposite angle showing himfinishing taking off his blazer, as if it were done in one shot. Itlooked like there were either 2 camera men, or had another cameraplaced on a tripod capturing the shot. Way too many instances of thishappening, it looked too professionally done for a 'found footage' typedocumentary. The reason why REC was far more effective is because theactors weren't told much of the things that would happen during scenes. Also, lot of the footage was done in one or just a few takes, whichmostly were long, drawn out shots.-The last 10 minutes of the movie made me wonder how many times theymust have changed their minds how it should've ended. It was a mess, &will leave you in disbelief for all the wrong reasons.I love my horror, I really wanted to like this movie, I'm not comparingit to The Exorcist, my girlfriend treated me on my birthday to watchthis & we were both immensely disappointed. Eli Roth introduced thismovie saying they wanted to create something original, I can onlysurmise that it did just that in showing how to deliver something sowatered down & downright trailerpark movie trash.

for a movie with Eli Roth's name attached to it,this one's not as sickand depraved as i thought it might be(though there is a pretty sickscene involving a cat)it's actually a pretty effective film.it'sdefinitely creepy.it's certainly unpredictable.the film seems to beleading in one direction, only to change course.i wasn't expecting theending at all.the acting was very good, especially from Ashley Bell, whoplays Nell.the film is rated 5.8/10 here on this site, which is close towhat i would rate it.it's no masterpiece, but it's the first filmattached in some way to Eli Roth that i found worth watching.for me,TheLast Exorcism is a 6/10
(08 May 2012)
This movie was absolutely terrible. I can only imagine that the two people that gave it a five (as of this writing) were on some intense form of psychodelic substance. First of all, it is not original in the slightest. It borrows from multiple movies similar to its kind, including the documentary style of the Blair Witch Project (which was at least one of the first of its kind). It also has some typical exorcism movie traits, such as contorted body parts and girl chained/strapped to bed. Also, don't forget a little Rosemary's Baby.Secondly, I believed throughout the movie that the girl was just crazy. There were no real signs of possession that a crazy person couldn't have pulled off just as easily. And maybe the writers meant to do it this way so we could make up our own minds about if she was really possessed or not. If that was the case, however, they definitely ruined this idea by throwing in an ending that made up our minds for us and was simply dumbfounding. Finally, please don't buy this movie or if you must, please find it in the $4 bin after it has been out for a few months. It's that bad.

A faithless evangelical minister Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian)receives an urgent letter. In the letter written, it says that theman's daughter is possessed. At the same time, they are making andocumentary. Marcus decides to expose an exorcism as a fraud, workingwith producer/director Iris Reisen (Iris Bahr) and cameraman Dave (AdamGrimes). He decides to meet this possessed teenager named Nell (AshleyBell), her father Louis (Louis Herthum) and Louis' son Caleb (CalebLandry Jones). Cotton performs the fake exorcism with special effectsand eerie sounds. Cotton decides to misdiagnosed as a possession bypowerful demon named Abalam. Once he left the family, telling them theexorcism is over. He decides to sleep at a hotel before he returns homebut Nell finds herself at Cotton's hotel room. Cotton and the twodocumentary crew brings her to the hospital. Nothing was found and Nellis in perfect physical condition. Slowly, Cotton realized this familyare not what they seemed to be and Nell could be possessed by a realdemon. At the same time, Cotton slowly finds his faith back in god.Directed by Daniel Stamm made an intriguing horror movie that is shotlike a documentary. The movie starts out amusingly, then slowly turnsinto a strange horror movie. Fabian and Bell gives effectiveperformances. "The Last Exorcism" has some real scares and imaginativemoments but seeing this with audiences. Some of the viewers view "TheLast Exorcism" as an unintentional comedy, especially the teenageaudiences. Also for a "PG-13" movie, it is pretty strong, i amsurprise, this didn't get an R-Rating. "The Last Exorcism" isn't forall tastes. Perphas those are truly into horror movies will enjoy thisbest. Some critics and audiences felt the movie fall apart towards theend. The conclusion is no surprise and it is probably the only realflaw of this horror movie. If you liked "The Exorcist" and "The BlairWitch Project", you will enjoy this movie. Eli Roth (Hostel Part 1 and2, Cabin Fever) is one of the producers of this feature. (*** ½/*****).

It starts out strong. A reverend who wants to document his last"Exorcism" on camera, to show that the whole thing was a fraud. He getsa letter in the mail, which he thinks is just another misunderstoodpsychiatric problem. The whole movie you're on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. I'm a huge fan of the found-footage genre. Sure, they don't have thebest acting (Which isn't the case in The Last Exorcism) but there'sjust something really scary about it. Maybe it's the fact that it seemsmore real. The Last Exorcism isn't an exception. It feel real, mostlybecause of the amazing acting done by all the characters. Each one hasa real personality, and the actors are each perfect for their part. Thegirl does an especially good job at being possessed. The whole moviefeels real, nothing cheesy or Insidious about it. That is, until youget to the end. It's not a bad ending - in fact, it's good. But it justdoesn't fit the rest of the movie. It feels more like a really good"Scare Tactics" prank rather than the real conclusion. But it's creepynonetheless, And actually leaves it open for a sequel. (SPOILER: Whathappened to the reverend? Did he end up defeating the demon? Alertingthe police? Stopping the crazed satanists?) Which I believe they'redoing. Hopefully we get an explanation of some of the events that wereleft in the dark.Overall, a creepy, effective, believable horror film. (Until the end,you have to suspend disbelief for a second. 7.5/10
(04 May 2012)
Such a scary movie that really makes your hair stand............then the last 5 minutes or so of the movie happened. I don't wanna spoil anything for you viewers but the ending is so unbelievable and ridiculously stupid that it actually stopped me from purchasing the movie. I enjoy scaring the life outta myself with exorcist style movies and this one was great until the end. You can tell that they rushed the ending and probably had no idea what to do with the characters. I mean they really took the blair witch project idea and made an exorcist movie out of it which isnt a bad idea at all since the blair witch was garbage and this wasn't. So at least the movies are improving with this reality approach that the movie industry is taking, but they need to finish strong. I'm sorry but not one person in their right mind would think this ending was good in the slightest bit. If you like being scared to think that something REALLY crazy is going to happen you will be disappointed because its not real crazy its just REALLY ridiculous to the point where any viewer would think, "Wow there is no possible way this would ever happen and the fact they even wrote this shows the writers were on drugs.........heavy ones."

If you have watched other exorcist movies, this one's not quitedifferent from them. Again there's a girl possessed by the demon whohad to be cured through exorcism. No doubt the technique used this timeis inspired from the trend of cam movies like Rec and ParanormalActivities. The basic concept is good and worth appreciation howeverthe way in which the whole idea is carried out including the climax isjust average. Actwise, all have done a nice job. The movie isdefinitely creepy and have certain chills. The climax is unexpected andmay be regarded as offbeat wrt the theme. Anyways the movie has itsmoments and can definitely be viewed once.

Let's face it. Aside from the original Exorcist of the seventies, movies of this genre are usually not very good. "The Last Exorcism" changes nothing. It had great setting and premise, but then simply didn't deliver and fell flat on it's face. The end was just atrocious and spoiled what was already a mediocre movie. It was like they couldn't think of a good finale and the office assistant or some other amateur took over. I felt cheated for want of a better word. Don't waste your time and money on this.

Well first I would like to say that I am a genuine Eli Roth fan. I havefound his original and fresh additions to the horror/thriller filmgenre so far, really enjoyable and entertaining. I also still expect tosee a lot of good things to come from him in the future, especiallywith mentors and influences in his life like Q Tanrantino for example.HOWEVER, This movie was quite frankly a boring, awfully slow andunoriginal one. It was also produced in a style that has been sooverdone to death! Maybe I am a bit biased, because I personally can'tstand the (quite literally) nauseating documentary style of fictionfilm making. I find it just way too contrived, and the novelty of itstarted by the Blair Witch project wore off on me long ago.I was very surprised and disappointed in regards to just how boring andnothing this movie was. I fast forwarded pretty much through the wholething just to see any "highlights" appear somewhere. Although I commendhim for trying something out of his comfort zone, I think this film mayhave been scarier if Roth had stuck to the style that has worked forhim best in this particular case. The creepiest and best bits of thefilm were in the promo ads. The movie didn't live up to what I believedthe promo ad was promising to deliver. In conclusion, although I found this movie disappointing, I still havefaith and look forward to see what Eli Roth has in store for me nexttime around. Even the best director or artist has a mediocre piece ofwork appear somewhere along the line. You can't please everyone all ofthe time after all. But I know he has a lot more to offer this genre offilm making in the future, of which I am such a fan :-)

The only saving grace of this movie is that the majority of the actorsgave it their all and pulled off great individual performancesconsidering what they were given to work with. Don't get me wrong, theensemble did not work cohesively in the film at all.Like many of you have already seen, the previews to this movie aremisleading, making this look like an attempt at an old school horrorflick. The story is original, in that Pastor Marcus is "filming thisdocumentary in an attempt to expose exorcism for the scam that it is",but finds a genuine demonic possession. There was no need to 'trick'film-goers by making the previews this way; it just sets them up fordisappointment.Personally, I was completely surprised at the beginning of the film, ina good way; it seemed that I was going to get an original story line! But alas, I was setting my hopes too high. Predictable "twists" cameone after another, and 30 minutes into the film, I had it figured out.The film never developed an even pace, and certain elements becameincreasingly frustrating by the end of the movie, for instance, the"cameraman" only using the camera's light a third of the time it wouldhave been appropriate for him to do so; the shaky-cam "found footage"technique executed without any originality; and the fact that this filmhad a musical score all killed the escapism, keeping me from believinga minute of the story.I'm not even going to bring up the details of the ridiculous excuse ofan ending. I had hoped Eli Roth would have tried something other thanthe "doesn't make any sense and takes everything away from the film"ending that effects every movie he's attached to, but even as aproducer, the ending has his fingerprints all over it.Mr. Roth, you owe us all more. Get back to Cabin Fever - you showed somuch potential, and yet your skills have yet to mature.

This was the biggest cop out of an ending that I have ever seen. Themovie started off so brilliantly, and the possession scenes were sowell done, that by the time they had to come up with an ending, theycompletely dropped the ball. The only way I can describe this film is: The Exorcist, shot likeCloverfield, with a ripped off ending of Rosemary's baby. And to makematters worse, imagine the creative staff who wrote the ending was M.Night Shymalan.I feel terrible for the actors in the film. They did an amazing job, only to have it ruined by the lack of caring by the Production staff.

This review is from: The Last Exorcism [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I hated Cloverfield and those style of movies. If you like those types of movies, you'll like this one. But personally, I couldn't stand those and wasn't aware this movie was like this before ordering. It is a first person, "documentary" style movie that likes to lead you to believe it is real.I think I would have liked this movie had it been directed differently, so my review is based soley on the directing style. The movie's story and settings were a good idea and could have made a decent "normal" movie.

The Last Exorcism is rated PG-13 and was released nationwide in theatres on August 27, 2010. It was written by Huck Botko & Andrew Garland and directed by Daniel Stamm. The Last Exorcism stars Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell and Louise Herthram.Cotton Marcus, played by Fabian, was raised in the church by a 'fire and brimstone' preacher. At a very early age, Cotton began to follow in his father's footsteps and preach the gospel. At the tender age of ten, Cotton performed his first exorcism. Years later with a wife and son, Cotton has spent his life developing elaborate hoaxes and effects to keep the money rolling in for him and his family. Having lost his faith many years ago, Cotton has decided to end his career as a phony by bringing in a documentary crew and sharing all the insider tricks to performing exorcisms so that people believe, and then shell out the cash. When he and his camera crew show up at the home of Louis Sweetzer, a man who says he is suffering from cattle loss and unexplainable deaths of his farm animals; what they find is much more than any of them have bargained for. The Last Exorcism is filmed in a documentary style much like The Blair Witch Project and will appeal to fans of this brand of movie. I laughed hysterically throughout the entire first half of the movie as Cotton Marcus takes the film crew through the tricks of the trade. The characters in The Last Exorcism were wonderfully placed together and draw the viewer in with the realness and intensity of their lives. Patrick Fabian was fantastic as the money hungry, unbelieving but sympathetic preacher, Cotton Marcus. Ashley Bell's performance as the possessed Nell Sweetzer is shocking when you consider that no special effects were used for her part...NONE! The movie did begin to slip about halfway through and was not at all what I would consider a 'scary' movie. I am quite sure that many will be disappointed with the film's ending as well. I am giving The Last Exorcism a 3-star rating and urging you to skip the big buck's you'll pay at the theatre and just wait it out until The Last Exorcism hits the video stores.WebbWeaver Reviews
