cool film

watched this film the other night and was curious about it and it was real slick and polished and it had a old school matlock kinda sorta feel to it.not alot of surprises, but it was well paced and you kinda figured out a few things here and there. it tried to be old school and yet modern and it connected both worlds with a up dated twist. it was a well done film and it could have a life as a tv show.

Too Much Flash Behind Camera

A slick lawyer defends a high-profile client who has been accused ofraping a woman he picked up at a bar. McConaughey is well cast in thetitle role, although he does go overboard at times when laying on thecharm. Tomei has a thankless and inconsequential role as his ex-wife ina subplot that adds nothing to the story. The cast has a number offamiliar faces and they do well for the most part. The script isinteresting if somewhat overburdened with legal shenanigans, and thereare too many endings. What ruins the film, however, is the overlyflashy direction. With his propensity for a shaky camera, wild zooming, and extreme closeups, Furman should stick to music video.

Hollywood is loaded with talented actors so that's not the reason for most movies being duds. The writing is usually the weak link. BUT NOT HERE. Based on a book by an outstanding writer, Michael Conneley, the storyline is exciting and the plot is interesting without being overly complex & confusing. I never realized that McConaughey was this good, having only seen him in light weight roles. He was great. Marisa Tomei is as talented as ever & and even sexier. All of the cast were excellent.

Excellent story, excellent acting.

This review is from: Lincoln Lawyer (Amazon Instant Video) This movie was fantastic.Normally I would steer clear of Matthew McConaughey films simply because they are so bad (especially his romantic comedies!). But for some reason, he plays the sleazy lawyer type so well! The story had me engaged the entire length of the movie (which is very hard to do, given I have a very short attention span). I thought Ryan Phillipe did a fine job, however I would have casted somebody who could play two faces better. I get that his character is supposed to look like a nice guy, but his bad side isn't as convincing. I also found Willam H Macy, while a superb actor, to be ridiculous looking with flowing long hair matched with his nerdy voice. So the casting in this movie is my biggest issue. But overall the story is SOLID. Great screenwriting, and direction. While I have done my best not to give anything away, I can say the ending was oh-so-satisfying. I would say it's an intellectual thriler, on par with Michael Clayton (although the styles are completely different). If you don't like Matthew McConaughey, I would ask that you give this movie a chance, it's really your loss if you rule it out simply because of MC. Blame his agent for is other disasters. This one is really, really good. Trust me.

Great movie

This was a great movie -- all the way through. And our favorite Matthew McConaughey movie. He's done other good movies, too, but we all think this might be our favorite.

Nt Guilty Of Being A Flop

I am a huge Michael Connelly fan; and when I heard they were coming outwith a movie, it was a must see. The book was excellent; and I said ifthe movie is anything like the book it will be a success. I was right, the movie is exactly like the book; and the soundtrack is awesome.Itstarts out with a client who comes from money hooking up with a girl ata bar. She takes him back to her place she and he have words and sheends up dead. He's arrested, but thinks he will get off due to his andhis families status in LA. In comes hard working Mickey Haller whomainly does business out of his Lincoln Town Car and ends up defendinghim. Mickey starts running into problems when his client fails to tellhim everything about that night. Haller knows he needs help becausethere is just something about his client that says GUILTY all over him. With the help of William H. Macy's character, Haller's PI, the truthstarts to come out; and the game of separating the truth from fictionbegin to weave like a spider weaving a web. Kris L.CocKayne-abucki4ever71:)

Ok, but incorrectly titled.

This review is from: The Lincoln Lawyer (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) The title says that it is the Blu-ray along with a DVD and Digital Copy. However, what I received was a Blu-ray and a Spanish copy of that Blu-ray. So any chance of putting it on my Apple TV easily is now done.

Loved It

My husband and I went and saw the Lincoln Lawyer last night and just loved it. We almost didnt go and see it because I really hadnt seen any trailers for it. So we debated between Limitless, Adjustment Bureau and The Lincoln Lawyer. Needless to say we made a great choice picking The Lincoln Lawyer. The movie kept me guessing whats going to happen next. I loved the story and how it played out, and a great ending to the story. I hate movies that have crappy endings. It was nice that I was able to enjoy it enough to get a few laughs but not to much to take away from the seriousness of the story. It was something you could almost relate too, with how the justice system sometime seems to work. All in all if you dont see it in the theaters you at least need to rent it and see it. I cant wait to buy this one.

Good Legal Movie

Matthew McC does a very good job as the lead, the best since he played the religious leader in CONTACT. He is a defense attorney, more likely to be defending Hell's Angels than the hoi polloi. All that changes though when he gets the scion of a Los Angeles real estate family. This good looking defendant is played by Ryan Phillipe who is fast becoming a pro at playing creeps. He does a good job but I hope he gets another kind of role soon.My problem with this film is with the women and specifically the mother of the defendant, played by Frances Fisher. Fisher does a fine job. However, I read the book years ago and I seem to remember that the mother's role is a lot more complex than the way it is presented in the movie. In fact, the mother's role in the book is a doozy. So I did not like losing that aspect.I'm not sure how many more of these ex wife type of roles Marisa Tomei can play. I think she may be reaching the end of the line with these roles and needs to start looking at more mature parts.Essentially in this film we have a client, Phillipe, taking over the case by taking one step after another to back his attorney into a corner. Worse yet, the lawyer has a small daughter and has to worry about his client using his daughter's safety to control him. If I had to choose between reading the book and watching the movie, it would be no contest. I'd pick the book. However, if you have no intention of reading the book, the movie is well worth watching and Matthew McC does an excellent job as the lead.

Best McConaughey Film in years

Really nice adaptation from Connolly's book. Well made, good pacing and good to strong supporting performances from Ryan Phillipe, Marisa Tomei and Josh Lucas. Good early reveal, which I won't ruin, but it keeps you wondering how McConaughey's slick but likable lawyer is going to figure his way out. McConaughey is a defense attorney who has grown too used to defending "innocent" men when he stumbles upon a case that seems to reveal that he may have let an innocent man go to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Not sure how this did in the theaters but it is really a good flick with satisfying payoff.

Did he, didn't he?

They answer the question of guilt or innocence rather early in themovie but that didn't make a difference because it was still just agreat flick and the ending caught me somewhat by surprise and it wasdone well, even if a bit conveniently. I do think that they could'vedone a better job of casting as Marissa Tomei was a little lacking inher role, not so much because of her acting skills, or lack thereof, but more because the role seemed like it should be cast with a morebelievable character. Marissa never let you forget that she is anactress playing the role of an attorney, she just wasn't credible inthe role at all. But this was a fun movie to watch an kept you guessingfor the most part. I enjoyed it.

Perfectly paced and gripping legal thriller

There are the grand emotional courtroom dramas that immerse you in theethical dilemmas that stem from from the case itself, filled withquotable speeches from venerable actors; then there's "The LincolnLawyer" starring Matthew McConaughey. Based on the Michael Connellynovel, the film plays more like a crime thriller set in the legalrealm, one that intends to be equal parts slick and ethicallychallenging. Rather than an honorable protagonist who must do the rightthing in the face of great adversity to combat a corrupt justicesystem, Mick Haller is an alcoholic with a moral compass that wouldmake your intestines curl."The Lincoln Lawyer" embraces the idea that the legal system is an openair-market where deals are cut left and right "justice" is nothing morethan a word that keeps it from crumbling. Mick Haller puts bad guys onthe street and makes a living off the legal fees of some of thescummier creatures in Los Angeles, but he's also seen his fair share ofstate prosecutors using big hammer on a tiny nail — that's just how itgoes. However, there comes a time when every person's true moralcharacter is tested.Haller finds himself in a tough spot when he agrees to defend a wealthyreal estate agent name Louis Roulet (Ryan Philippe) who's been chargedwith assaulting and raping a prostitute. If he's telling the truth, thecase seems pretty open-and-close, but he's hiding a few secrets thattwist the case in unimaginable ways.Although terrific talent lines this film inside and out, the actingmerely helps bolster the impressiveness of the gripping story. DirectorBrad Furman has paced the film perfectly with the exception of the last15 minutes; there are essentially no dull moments. Solid legalthrillers can wrap around your brain with the slightest of ease (whyelse would "Law & Order" still be on television?), but the truechallenge lies in telling a unique story. No rival comes to mind toHaller's ethical quandary.McConaughey's swagger makes him perfect for a sleazy lawyer, but theemotionally troubled alcoholic side of the character — the part thatcan't sleep at night — doesn't lie outside of his acting boundaries.Although neither the script nor the direction ever tests him for toolong in this regard, he embodies the role to the point that it does addsomething to the film. In my experience, McConaughey's never beenbetter.Actors such as William H. Macy, a still-underrated Ryan Phillippe,Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, John Leguizamo and Bryan Cranston all provideexcellent fits and stud out the cast, but the stars remain the thrillsof the story and Furman's superb pacing. The film's ethical dilemmas and insights provide for some relativelystrong chewing, but but "Lincoln Lawyer" rides suspense and engagingdialogue like a Lincoln Town Car into the sunset.~Steven CVisit my site at http://moviemusereviews.com

AJ

I thought the movie was really good. Also it was easy to understand, not complicated and muddled like other movies. The plot was well developedand showed how even a married couple of lawyers can disagree fundamentallyon how the law should be applied and upon whom. That way it was reallygreat. The only flaw in the movie was when the criminal's mother is shownalso as a person willing to defend her son by doing criminal acts. I thoughtthat was a bit far fetched that a rich upper class lady would be ready to getinto these kinds of activities herself. That stretched the plot a bit too far.And could have been handled differently. The main actor played by MathewMcCaunaghey was brilliantly acted and handled. Which shows Mathews abilityto handle drama as well as romance movies.

The Entire Point of this Thriller Rests on a False Notion of Privileged Information

This movie starts out showing us that Mcconaughey plays a smooth, tough as nails, street wise defense attorney who is as good as it gets in criminal cases. Then it rolls into a pretty good story with a high profile case. Don't be seduced by the flashy trailer and synopses, this movie is no such thing. It's a very, very bad thriller that hinges on an implausible and faulty notion of the meaning of attorney client privilege.Shall I explain? Attorney client privilege only applies to what the client says about the case! If a client confesses a crime or says he's going to commit one, that is not privileged, in fact it's your ethical duty as an attorney to notify the police if you believe your client is going to commit a crime, has committed one, or is going to otherwise harm himself, and no, you do not get disbarred for doing so. It's the same thing you do as a psychiatric counselor, and no, your headshrinker wouldn't lose his license either! The conflict of this "thriller" is that Mcconaughey's client confesses to a past crime in which a former client of Mcconaughey's is in prison for, confesses to breaking in to Mcconaughey's home, to threatening harm on Mcconaughey's family, and to having Mcconaughey's partner killed, and rather than hold its screenwriters to accurate representations of what attorneys do, they tell us that Mcconaughey's going to lose his license if he brings any of this to the police which is indeed his duty to do so. Huh? Did the writers actually ask an attorney what attorney client privilege means? I guess not.At this point of the film, it just turns to trash and I'm told the novel is the same. Excuse me for being so critical, but I'm sure you're the same way. You want your sports movies to accurately represent the sport your watching. You want racing movies to accurately use car talk. You want medical movies to plausibly show what doctors do, but why can't we have such high profile crime thrillers like this accurately show an attorney?Mcconaughey is over all the smooth, brazen, and cool Mcconaughey we like watching, rather than the watered down one he usually is in his Rom Coms, but all that is wasted on bad writing.

(04 May 2012)

eh, it was ok

This review is from: Lincoln Lawyer (Amazon Instant Video) I wasn't totally disappointed, but I wasn't thrilled either. I thought this movie was kind of flat. There were a few bright spots of acting when Matthew McConaughey's character cries over not being able to recognize the innocent from the guilty or when he's figuring out he may have put an innocent man in jail, but other than that his acting was not so great. The highlights came from (in order) the guy who played the prostitute's "john" and the rehabbed ex-con who both took the stand in this courtroom/crime drama. Their performances had me in stitches -- they were really good. Ryan Phillipe wasn't too bad. He made a reasonably believable sociopath. The dialog was pretty thin... not the worst I've seen, but still. The plot was a bit choppy too... didn't seem to flow right (IMHO) - lol. Very average. I'm surprised so many gave this movie 4 or 5 stars. It was really just OK.

The Good Far Outweighs the Bad

As a fan of the book and of the character of Mickey Haller in general,I was skeptical about Matthew McConaughey playing the part. I was verypleased with the way he played the heck out of the character, with allthe smarm, charm, conviction, and vulnerability needed to captureHaller and and make an audience root for him. Marisa Tomei was great asMaggie McPherson - she and McConaughey have a nice, grown-up chemistry.William H. Macy's Frank Levin was endearing and funny, which made whathappened to his character even more tragic. Bryan Cranston's hard-nosedand crusty portrayal of Detective Lankford and the chemistry betweenhim and McConaughey in their few scenes together makes me willing tooverlook the fact that he played this character if they make "The BrassVerdict" - the sequel of "The Lincoln Laywer" - into a movie and wantto cast him as Harry Bosch. There were a few deficiencies, however. Ryan Phillippe was passable asLouis Roulet, but he came across more spoiled rich boy than the face oftrue evil that he was supposed to be. He had a boo-hiss moment or twobut it never really felt like he was a worthy opponent for Haller.Frances Fisher as Roulet's mother was criminally underused; her vitalrole at the end of the movie felt a bit anti-climatic and forcedbecause we never got a true sense of how twisted the character was. This isn't a movie that MUST be seen on the big screen, but it's worththe cost of a movie ticket if you like legal dramas that rely onemotional and cerebral drama instead of action-packed chases andexplosions.

The Lincoln Lawyer-Finally a real film

My family and I just saw the Lincoln Lawyer and I was very pleased and satisfied with this movie in a way I have not been after watching a film in a very very long time. Finally a great plot, actor(s),and effects/visuals and ending! A real movie not just some "shocking" and "controversial" trash thrown together and called a movie. Mathew McConaughey was born to play this role. He delivered his lines with authority and a clear purpose. The rest of the cast did an equally superb job. when it was over I only wished that it would go on. A must see if you are a hard working person who is looking for a movie worth the ridiculously jacked up ticket price. But do not take my word for it go see for your self.
