After a serial killer named Red John murdered Patrick Janes wife and daughter, Jane dedicated his life to hunting down and killing Red John. To that end he gave up his lucrative pretense of being a psychic and joined the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a consultant to the team responsible for investigating the Red John case, led by Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon. Using Janes exceptional gift for observation and his mentalist tricks, the team is able to close an unprecedented number of cases, but Janes unconventional and often outright illegal methods also bring much censure down on Lisbons head, making his assistance both a blessing and a curse. Meanwhile, the hunt for Red John continues...

I don't imagine that Patricia Arquette is too pleased with this series! Her series titled Medium is basically the same premise as this show, but I found it to be aimed directly at women. Thats where the Mentalistshines because it is aimed at all demographics really. Not only thatbut the show is witty, funny, and mysterious all at the same time.Basically it is a bunch of episodes that each of murder investigationswhere the Mentalist comes in to predict who did it. There is also amain storyline with a murderer called Red John who murdered theprotagonists family. The episodes with Red John in them are the bestones so far, and I think the viewers are looking forward to seeing thefinal showdown between Red John and the protagonist!

One thing that makes this series so enjoyable is the humour. Myfavourite 'funny' line was when Rigsby and Cho were tasked to questionsome teenagers. Rigsby said "I hate interviewing teenagers - it's liketalking to mud". How very true!Simon convinces as an American, because he is an Aussie! Taswegians(Tasmanians) don't have strong Aussie accents like others on themainland. Taswegians? Well, that is because mainland Aussies think ofthat 'little island' below the continent is foreign! One small niggle is that the series has got hung up on 'Red John'.Please move on fellas!

The mentalist is no doubt not an original concept, and yes, it might besomehow related to Psych. The show does distinguish itself from Psychwith its new and unrelated material. The series literally takes you ona ride as one feels involved in the investigations with every episode. The haters of the show should ease up. This is good old detective work, which relies on careful crime scene observation and a bit of suspectmanipulation, as oppose to the science ridden crime dramas whichbombard our television sets every evening. No disrespect to C.S.I. Onemore thing that struck me, has anyone else noticed the number of 24alumni appearing on the show?? Up until episode 7, we have had 4alumni, Steve Culp, Xander Berkeley,Gregory Itzin and Leslie Hope. Iwonder who is coming up next........ Catch the show for its wit andfun, if not.....check it out to see if Jack Bauer shows up to help TheMentalist.....

I don't watch the show but I did read about it in creative screenwriting and the had the picture of red john logo and the story behindit, talk about ripping of ghost in the shell's laughing man, even thelogo and plot are more or less the same, guess they are big anime fans.Okay it's not set in the future, not animated, so that is where itends, from what I have been told and read, you don't know who red johnis and knows hot the main lead, Mr Jane, works and his team and leadsthem on a merry dance until the very end when you will get to see john, just like the laughing man in ghost in the shell. Look forward to being right about this, but I was laughing hard overthis homage, good work to the writers for this one, it will beinteresting.

I am a massive fan of 'The Mentalist.' This is a witty, clever andentertaining show. Based around Patrick Jane, a man whose past careeras a fake psychic caused his wife and child to be murdered, who nowworks for the California Bureau of Investigation. The pilot had one ofthe most entertaining openings to an episode I've ever seen, let alonea programme, and hooked me immediately. It combines a lot of successful elements. It has the relationshipbetween Jane and Lisbon- Lisbon quite closely following procedure andJane often disregarding it in order to catch the criminal. There isalso Cho's steely exterior which is often food for comedy, especiallywhen he goes undercover. Van Pelt and Rigsby's complicated relationshipis also a sweet sidebar.Generally the show doesn't take itself too seriously, with the crimesoften being solved by the use of humorous tricks and what not. But thenit brings in the more serious elements when it comes to Janesrelationship with Red John, the serial killer who murdered his family. It is gripping television and a very welcome contribution to ourscreens.

The first half of the first season was interesting. After that itbecame another episodic cop drama. The series used to be interestingwhen if let the viewer in on the secret, or how the mentalist picked upclues on his theories. The original story was also interesting, a manfutily searching for a serial-killer(who was probably dead). It lent areal tragic air to the hero. This sadly wasn't enough and the show andturned it into a strange xfiles thing which destroyed any suspension ofbelief. It also stopped sharing the mentalist's vision into why hethought someone was guilty and began magicly having the protagonistpoint out the guilty party (becuase he's super smart)instead ofactually being smart(the show).Fun for the 1st season then ditch it.For smart and interesting TV go with Wonderfalls, Dead like me orFirefly.

Just started watching the show on DVD. So far, its been relaxing andfun. The mysteries are not complex but how the team untangle them hasbeen fun. The chemistry between the main character and the CBI has beendeveloping at a good pace. Have not finished the first season yet but Ihave high hopes. Highly recommended for anyone who likes good mysteriesespecially the fans of Agatha Christie. Patrick Jane is like the modernday Hercule Poirot with a dark past. He brings a lot of baggage unlikePoirot and the insight he has into daily lives of women are like MissMarple. Additionally, the psychological torture he faces are similar toSherlock Homes even though not self-inflicted. I always loved mysteriesthat puts less emphasis on physical evidence and deals with humanemotions and the complexity of the criminal mind. The Mentalistcertainly does not disappoint on those categories.

the difference between the mentalist and the other investigationseries, like Monk, Crime Scene Investigation and other, it's simple. The case that Monk every day try to close are so unreal. I admit I didn't follow this show when it first aired. Now and then Iwatched bits of episodes when I came across them on TV, but the shownever held my interest for very long, because it seemed on the wholevery bland, and no different from the dozens of otherprocedural/detective shows featuring ahighly-intelligent-yet-quirky-and-unconventional lead character (yawn). It was only after the season ended, and I had exhausted all otherviewing possibilities, that I downloaded the first episode, just to seeif it might be more interesting when seen from the beginning. And,indeed, the first episode was great: it was well-written, and the"Red-John" back story was very compelling. It made me want to see more, and so I went on to watch the rest of the season, although I was oftendisappointed by the episodes that followed. The main problem is this: the ONLY thing that makes this show uniqueand compelling viewing is the Red John story. But this is onlythematized in three of the twenty-three episodes of the first season.Apart from those episodes, what you get is for the most part justanother detective show. The fact that this one features a 'mentalist'is only mildly interesting on its own. There are just too many similarshows around these days for that alone to sell it.That said, the Red John episodes were very good, and the occasionalglimpses into Patrick Jane's past always the highlight of the episode. What makes this character interesting is his darker side, thesuggestion that he is motivated by revenge and that, beneath his cool, controlled demeanor, he is more than slightly unhinged. Simon Bakeractually seems to be quite a good actor, capable of portraying someemotional depth and range. They should give him something more to dothan stand around casting coy smiles at his colleagues. For the second season, they need to darken the tone (it's way too"PG-13" for an adult target audience), focus much more on the Red Johnplot, and highlight Jane's dark obsession. If they continue in the samevein as the first season, I predict that viewers will dwindle as theyswitch to other, edgier shows, and the series will peter out and die bythe end of the second season. The show has great potential, but theyneed to take a few chances.

And,, I don't like the lead actor. And, the story doesn't feel thatnew. And, still something made me enjoy it, something tells me that I willdo watch coming episodes, something also tells me that, me not likingthe lead is intentional, still I can live with that also. The show somehow managed to feel fresh despite it's similarities withothers. It will be interesting to see how they can keep the theme upwithout going to the "extreme" or the to obvious. As always, the people around the lead is probably were the show willmake or break.

I LOVE this show. Yes, it has the same premise as Psych and Monk but itdoesn't use it in the same way. It is very real feeling. Psych borderson stupid at times (but I watch it). Gus is always mad at Shawn andalways shows contempt for him. Monk can and does drive you crazy (alsostupid at times, but I watch it, too). Mentalist gives me the best ofboth without the stupidity. I wish I had his talent. Any day. I alsothink he is very handsome but dark because of his family tragedy. Hehas issues but he does not let them get in the way of his gift. I ratethis show way above the other 2. So what is the link between the wordred in every episode title. I assume it must have something to do withRed John but I don't even know how he got the name Red John. Doesanyone know? Maybe I missed an episode early on but cant figure it out.If it has to do with Red John I have not even figured out how herelates to every story line. I don't believe he is mentioned in everyepisode. Was he?

The show takes place in Sacramento, California and follows PatrickJane, a former "psychic", who is an consultant for CBI, a bureaufocuses on crimes in California. Jane joins them to solve crimes basedon his observations and his smart guesses while pushing the bureau'sethical boundaries. Jane's main motivation is to catch Red John, whomurdered his wife and daughter.Review after Season 2: Like Fox's show Bones and House, one onlywatches the show for the love of the character, not love of the plot. The major life changing drama only happens in the last 2-3 episodes ofthe season and the crimes are not that interesting neither is thebanter. However, the relationship between the key characters are quitesolid and charming. The plot of this show is very similar to USA'sPsych, however, the crimes in The Mentalist actually makes sense butwith less humor. It's easy to miss a few episodes and not care. But you come back to visit your friends for their personality not theirstory. *Side note. I LOVE SIMON BAKER (Patrick Jane) His not verypopular but good comedy is Sex and Death 101 with Naomi Watts. He justhas so much charm and charisma. It kills. Also he's from Australia thereal life accent is a plus.

I love these police team dramas. I am a big fan of Law & Order, butthey are not into character development. They care about the plots, andthey really make you think, but after years you end up knowing verylittle about the characters. Not so with The Mentalist. Plot is this series weak part. But, oncharacter development, both the two main characters, plus the threesecondary characters, and the "rest of the group" are very welldeveloped. And, both of the main characters can be said to be Hot,which is not bad, considering that neither of them tries to use theirhotness to manipulate the other characters, or the audience. Alsoimportant is that all characters have their own set of beliefs, andnuances, and behaviour, and even when there is a conflict because ofthose differences, those differences are treated with respect. My only problem with the series is that sometimes, the plots have ahole too many.
FilmLabRat (27 April 2012)
This is not a particularly deep show, but like Columbo before it,detective work can be really fun when it involves ratting out theculprit using a subtle but brilliant reading of people and clues.Patrick Jain can be arrogant and annoying yet witty and clever - afascinating and strangely lovable (not to mention hot) protagonist. Thesupporting characters are likewise amusing. Show also has great dialog.I'm curious to see where Jain's feelings for the psychic lead... thisis a new development in his character, and he's a little hard to read.Anyway, it's one of only two shows I try to watch every week -excellent writing, acting, casting directing.
mjmdl (26 April 2012)
I really like the show and it's actors. It stars a man who had a careeracting as a psychic who was just pretending for the money. He made themistake of catching the attention of a serial killer who retaliated bykilling his family. He recovered from a breakdown and now works as aconsultant to help the bureau catch the "bad guy" by using those sameintuitive, observant skills and really listening to what people do anddon't say. Simon Baker plays quite a multifaceted character that goesfrom playful to serious, whichever is called for and does it very well. The Mentalist has a good blend of being neither too dark like CriminalMinds or too lightweight like Psych, shows which I also watch.

After watching a marathon of White Collar, I thought they'd be toosimilar for me to fully enjoy, but I must say, both shows are differentand both are extremely enjoyable. This series seems rather predictable at first, but once you immerseyourself in the plot, you'll realize how unique this show really is.Not only does it have a dark and depressing undertone, it does so withhumor and uniqueness.Honestly, I've never seen a show like this before. It seems to be ableto bring every emotion out of the viewer, from empathy to sympathy tojoy. It's a complex series that doesn't fully explain everything indetail, but that does work in their favor. If you're looking for a show that doesn't spoon-feed you every littledetail which makes you feel as if the producers think you're too stupidto understand on your own, then this show is most definitely for you.Give this show a chance, I know I highly enjoy it, alongside WhiteCollar with Matthew Bomer. The acting from Simon Baker is astonishing,I'm truly addicted to this show. Flawless cast, awesome cases, interesting plot; I love every minute of it.

This show has been really really good from the onset, Patrick Jane'scharacter is likable and sometimes kind of funny to watch. There hasbeen some parts that made me smile and some that shocked me, a goodcombination to keep this show going. Robin Tunney who I rate as a greatactor has found herself a really good part that showcases her talents, her attitude towards Jane's methods of cracking the case make me smilebut ultimately you see how she respects him at the end of the episode.I seriously cannot wait to see if and how they catch Red John. I alsowonder what the second series will hold and if Red John reappears orsomeone else takes over the mantle this time with more seriousconsequences. Keep it up Simon Baker, your onto a winner with thisshow.

I've watched a lot of TV-series, The Mentalist being among them. Iwould not say that this show is incredibly innovative, i would not daresay it is the best show out there, since there are so many. I wouldonly say that it is a very nicely written, greatly acted show, withsome very interesting characters, Patrick Jane being at its core. Heis, by far, one of the most interesting and lovable character I've everseen. Think of him as a ''Dr.House meets Mulder from xfiles''.And bythis i mean that he is somewhat of a cocky an arrogant genius (House)that is driven to find the truth, that is calm and gentle andpatient(Mulder). There is so much depth to his personality, and withevery season it gets more interesting. The relationship between Patrickand his colleague Lisbon is strictly friendly and thankfully so.It isvery refreshing to see a relationship between two character (male andfemale) form so very slowly and strongly as the bond is growing deeperso that the audience can really feel and grow with them. those two inmy eyes are the best point of this show. Although there are many ''flaws'' to the show, some answers that areleft abruptly unanswered, some things that do not seem to holdtogether. As a whole i think this show is to be taken lightly, i thinkit is mostly about a very smart and interesting character who makes usfeel good and gives us hope that intelligence, patience and a goodheart can put to shame any villain; and it does it incredibly well.As a final word i thinks this is a feel good show centered around itscharacters , not the story.

'The Mentalist' is the latest American crime drama to make its way toBritish shores and so far, it is proving itself to be a promising showwhich will hopefully continue to flourish. The show revolves aroundPatrick Jane, a mentalist (someone with a highly developed sense ofobservation who can give the illusion that they have psi abilities)with a haunted past, who uses his unique skills to help the CaliforniaBureau of Investigation solve crimes.A show of this genre is obviously going to attract comparisons to othershows like 'Medium' (which is ridiculous because Jane is steadfast inhis view that he is not psychic and there are no such thing aspsychics) or 'Psych'. In the case of the latter, admittedly, there aresimilarities to be had but 'Psych' is very much drama-lite comedywhereas this show can be dark and is a serious take on having anadviser with such abilities working with law enforcement.Simon Baker does an excellent job depicting Patrick Jane as a man who,on the surface, is genial, charismatic and arrogant but hides his darkemotional problems that we catch glimpses of as the show progresses.Jane, for all his relaxed persona, is a man who cannot come to termswith his tragic past and is an insomniac with anti-social tendenciesand a cynical view of the world around him. He is a truly fascinatingcharacter and it will be interesting to see how he continues todevelop. The rest of the cast do well but for now their characters takesecond place to Jane. Female lead character Teresa Lisbon is the leaderof the CBI team that Jane liaisons with and is starting to stand up asa character in her own right as well as someone who is beginning tounderstand the secrets of Jane. However, everyone else still need timeto be develop, which is understandable for a show only in its infancy. In all, 'The Mentalist' continues to excel and seeks to be yet anothersuccess from America (so, CBS, please don't cancel it!). It offers aunique insight into crime and the people involved. It also involvestantalising characters who leave the viewers desperate to uncover whatmakes them tick. Here's looking to a good few seasons to enjoy.

I love this show. Simon Baker is Patrick Jane, a consultant to the CBI,California Bureau of Investigation, which is the state equivalent ofthe FBI. Jane's a former psychic who lost his wife and daughter to aserial killer who calls himself "Red Jack." Red Jack, according to thepilot, takes great sadistic pleasure in watching his victims watch himas he's killing them. Since the pilot, the shows have gotten better. The most recent, Carnelian Inc, was about a murder in a conglomerate.Jane always has a way to know who's lying and who's telling the truth. He called himself a psychic before the deaths of his wife and daughter. Then he went to work for the state of California. His boss is AgentTeresa Lisbon. The Mentalist is a hoot at times. You can't help butlaugh at the funny situations.
