When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Don't believe all the negative comments here, I really wonder sometimeson IMDb about the mixed ratings. We sat down and watched this with thekids (Boy 7, Girl 9) and everyone loved it.Our lad found it the funniest but both kids loved the cat and theslapstick comedy. The acting wasn't the best in the world but the filmoverall was great and we all laughed throughout. How on earth this only has 5.2 stars is beyond me when the AWFUlLYbutchered, terribly animated and boring Fantastic Mr. Fox gets 7.9stars.If you want a good laugh for all the family then we recommend this.Jolly Fun!

At the advanced screening, young kids loved this movie. Although they tended to like the animated sections, I personally loved the interactions with Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays. These two actors were perfect for those movie and make you fall in love with them.

This review is from: The Smurfs / The Smurfs: Christmas Carol (Three-Disc Combo Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Love the movie - both the adults and the kids in my family - which is why we bought it for Christmas, including the digital download to watch on the iPad. But the code in the box isn't recognized which means I can't download the movie I paid for. RIP OFF. Just go to iTunes when you want a movie.

This review is from: The Smurfs (DVD) I brought this DVD for my daughter for Christmas. We had previously rented it and she fell in love with it. Since receiving it, we have watched it so many times that I am actually kind of sick of watching it but I do it to make her happy.

I remember as a boy, in elementary watching the Smurfs, and now my own daughter is in to this. She watched it in the theatre and I gave it a miss. Now we have bought the DVD and we have watched it twice together. She has shared it with many friends, boredom never sets in. We had spent three summers in NY, and this helps a lot. Many places are familiar. If you used to like the Smurfs as a child, and have a child around the age of 8 - 11, this may be fun. Of course it is not for everyone - but if a faf, Smurftastic !!

I saw this in the theater last Monday I noticed this was in a way moreconnected to the Belgium comic then the cartoon series. It makesreference to Peyo the Smurfs creator and even has a smurf Belgium comicin the movie. Besides Gutsy smurf there only original smurfs noSassette no sappy or Grandpa smurf who was voiced by Jonathan Winterswho voices Papa smurf in the movie. Hank Azaria put good effort intohis role as Gargamel and even has his own subplot which doesn't goanywhere. Like in the cartoon Gargamel is the comedy villain who isstill threatening. Katy Perry Is another one who dose good withcharacter Smurfette the Original human characters Neil Patrick HarrisJayma Mays where alright in there roles but i Did not really pay muchattention to them. One problem in the movie was the constant ProductPlacement which was impossible to overlook. well over 100 Productimages are plastered on the screen more then the zoo keeper which had alot. I give it 4 out of 5 stars and i hope there are Sequels in theFuture.

With the amount of bad reviews that this movie has received, and I havetaken them into account BEFORE seeing this movie, I was not surprisedon the level of unimaginative thought put into this film. There isnothing new in the story. There are nothing but nonstop spurting ofclichés and puns. There is no new storyline, and it is weak. The Smurfvoices are really, really bad. However, the movie is not a total disaster on the level of the horrid1999 movie "Wild, Wild West." My children liked it, I thought it waswhat it was (sophmoric and lame). The voices were just HORRIBLE. Ican't stand the hugely overrated (and that is an understatement) KatyPerry as it is, and her voice and lines pretty much sums up her talentand having her in this movie shows the level of voice "talent" that onewould expect. Come on, George Lopez? Kenan Thompson? Jonathan Winters?Pee Wee Herman? I mean, other than Winters and Cumming (who are actors, not voices), which of the people on the list of voices has ANY talent?Certainly not Wolfie Puck, who is called a "chef" (ever been to one ofhis restaurants?). Why does the entire story revolve around "pseudo"Smurfs Gutsy, Narrator, or the "Scottish" Smurf. Jokey would have beenan asset to the story, not the "Scottish" Smurf!I have to say that I am giving 5 stars due to the talent of Azaria.Yes, he plays Gargamel better than any other actor that I could hope. Many call his work wasted, but I don't believe so. He stays incharacter, and the piece at the end rounds him off perfect. He is notto blame. Gotta give credit where credit is due.And what is with the blatant "Product Placement"? Oh, that's right,it's a picture by SONY! Need I say more?Again, there is nothing new or imaginative. I'd stick to the good, ol'1980s cartoon series over this movie, but your kids may enjoy it forwhat it is: mindless entertainment. I liked "Looney Toons: Back inAction" much, much more. 5 of 10. Kids will probably like it.----- E.

the movie is : noisy, have a bad jokes ,made ââa stupid script, andsome performances worthy of the Razzies, if you are a child of 10 yearsmaybe enjoy it, actually thought I was going to be a good movie but "it's crap".when I win the ticket to the premiere yesterday thought it was a decentmovie at least, but it was stupid of which I ran out of film, if youhave children leave them in the room, disgusting movie. all thecharacters are ridiculous and have nothing to do with the series of 80's, the humor is stupid and totally unnecessary, the 3D was disgustingin conclusion is a crappy movie 1 / 10

First of all looking at the other reviews I wonder what exactly theother reviewers ( is that a correct word) were looking for! Its acartoon type movie for the summer hols for goodness sake! I went in hoping it would be like the cartoon and I wasn'tdisappointed. Gargamil ( spelling ) was great. He Sounded and lookedlike the cartoon character and as i remember him, even the way he movedand creeped about!!A lot of the bits from the film actually reminded me of clips of theshow yrs back and as im 'ahem' 38yrs old I know what I'm talkingabout!! OK, admitedly the smurfs are VERY annoying in parts and to be quitehonest I found myself rooting for Gargamil. (spelling again!) Also thecouple in it ( girl from Glee and red eye i think, gnd red head ) arevery kirsh, sweet etc... But There are some good moments, and Hey papasmurf had a great velvety voice as he should do and There is gargamil'scat to contend with too!! As I said if you're looking for a nonoffensive, not too long sweet blast from past with sprinkle of today init then look no further, if you want a good watch to really thinkabout..pick a different screen... Its just a smurfing film!!

This review is from: The Smurfs (Two-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) THIS MOVIE IS GEARED MORE TOWARDS THE YOUNGER CROWD. THE 3D IS EXCELLENT THOUGH. IF YOU CAN GET THIS FOR $20 OR LESS, BUY IT, OTHERWISE I WOULD WAIT. IF YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CRAZY ABOUT THE SMURFS, BUY IT.

You got it all wrong. This was just the rehearsal. There is no otherexplanation. The whole movie felt more like 80s slapstick. Like therehas been no development in comedy and humor in the last 30 years. I canonly imagine, that the makers of this movie were meeting and sayingsomething like this: "Guys, we have bought the rights for Smurfs. It'sa sure sell. Why risk anything at all to make something special? Let'sdo it the absolutely classic and trivial way, and everybody can go homewith their pockets full. High five!". The only special thing about thismovie was, that even they had a lot of jokes, you didn't have onereason to feel entertained.

This movie resembles two recent 3D videos: it uses the same combination of real-life footage with cartoons as "Yogi bear" and its cartoon heroes resemble gnomes from "Gnomeo and Juliet". Like with "Yogi Bear", there is an entertaining plot which keeps you occupied, and there is good humor which makes you laugh. Smurfs is a little better than Yogi Bear, though, because plot is more sophisticated and acting is more complex and involved. There is nothing in this movie to scare little kids but they may get bored as one probably has to be 10+ years old to understand all the humor and adult's problems with balancing professional life with family and Smurfs, but adults will certainly have fun. I honestly think it is one of the better movies that came out in 3D to-date. Talking about 3D - 3D effects are OK but not outstanding. There are several scenes made with extensive use of computer graphics done with 3D in mind which stand out, but the rest of the footage is regular 3D footage of live action with fine, but not stunning depth.I noticed that this movie got several bad reviews on Amazon, with one and two stars ratings. As I looked through those reviews, I noticed that they were all written by people who remember Smurfs from TV shows from decades ago and who are frustrated that Smurfs in this movie are so different from what they remember. I can't blame them - this is human nature and the way how we attach to memories from the past. I never saw the original story, and if I saw it today, I probably would find it boring and outdated as the majority of old films and shows. Without the set of mind pre-determined by expectations about smurfs, I enjoyed the movie and found that it was fun to watch!

I know film makers never set out to make an awful movie. In their heartthey start the production with the hopes the final product will be agood one. But after seeing this, I wonder what they really had hopedfor. Even during pre-production someone, a producer with some ounce oftalent, should have hit the breaks on this one. In the end they allmust have realised what a huge pile of toxic waste this is.If you're going to make an animated Smurf movie, then do so and let itbe animated in it's own Smurf world. Don't involve real humans, animals, locations etc.The final product stink and everyone involved should be thoroughlyashamed of themselves.

It took me a little while to get myself into the frame of mind where Iwas able to get myself on board with the fact that The Smurfs was akids' film. I was helped in this by the fact that there were a lot ofkids in the cinema. And, during this story where a couple of newYorkers help a small group of displaced Smurfs get back to Smurflanddespite the efforts of evil but inept comedy wizard Gargomel (playedwith gusty by Hank Azaria, clearly having a ball), the kids in thecinema laughed a lot and the knockabout slapstick which forms a largepart of the comedy. The film is technically well assembled, particularly the effects (andthe 3D works well in places). There isn't a lot here for adults, but youngish kids may well like it.
melimelo-3 (26 April 2012)
granted, there was some scatology in there but kids are always fond ofthat... The two kids I took (both 8) both got enthralled in the film, laughed and cheered on. One actually started to cry when the Smurfswere endangered. Also maybe this happened to be a particularly captiveaudience but we heard claps at the end of the film!Sure, it has a classic storyline with escaping the villain and beingcaught by the villain but defeating him and having goodness prevail...but most stories do! (especially in children's films)Honestly, I was seeing this film with low expectations but waspleasantly surprised.

The Smurfs 1/2 StarOf all the bad movies based on cartoon series and comic strips, thishas got to be the worst I've ever seen, the story is simple, the smurfstry to get away from gargamel when all of sudden they get time traveledto what you believe New York City of all places then they meet a manplayed by an embarrassed Neil Patrick Harris who has so good in Clara'sheart and TV shows like doogie houser m.d. and how I Met you mother andsome other woman to protect the smurfs or else gargamel will turn theminto gold for what reason. Now the smurfs I Remember from the cartoonwas funny, amazing and had a good heart, this one is just absolutelynasty, truly dreadful and truly, absolutely unnecessary. The Acting is in this one is either horrible, waste of talent, (whatthe hell is katy perry doing in this piece of junk, truly terrible),the screenplay is simply a big mess, the CGI effects are horrible, the3D is trash, the musical score is full of crap and everything else istruly stupid and here are some things that I Truly hated about thismovieThat one smurf would shake his ass, one smurf would fall into thetoilet after he blew his bubble, that the smurfs would also look at aSony electronic billboard and guess who release this movie,You guess itColumbia pictures, the makers of this film and the same ones who didtwo dreadfully bad films like Leonard Part 6 and Ishtar almost 25 yearsago. the makers of this piece of truly dreadful trash oaught to beashamed of themselves, shame on them and shame on this movie.and who is owned by Columbia Pictures, you guess it Sony. Kids mightlike this, because they haven't seen the original cartoons.Peyo, Don Messick, Hanna-Barbera and others are rolling in their gravesas we speak. This is the worst movie of the year and one of the worst movies I'veever seen.A Pure absolute dead zone. They outta to be ashamed of themselves.

I saw this movie at the theater with my 13 year-old and we totally loved it! It was action-packed and thoroughly entertaining, with lots of messages of family values. The story was interesting and moved at a fast pace throughout. I watched the original televised shows when they first aired, and am enjoying watching the old episodes again on TV with my daughter. We are big fans of the show, so seeing the Smurfs on the big screen was a real treat. It follows closely to the original essence of the characters, with a few updated twists. We heard that this may be the first of a Smurfs Trilogy, and look forward to seeing any future Smurfs adventures. I would recommend this movie for families, and anyone who is a fan of the Smurfs. It was Smurftastic!

I went to see this with my 7-year-old son and he enjoyed it. I wasentertained, as well. This is by no means a bad movie, like some otherreviews state; sooner, it fulfills its role very well as familypastime. Definitely recommended; don't believe all the negative reviewson this site, or, at least don't take them too literally. While this isnot exactly groundbreaking, it's obvious that the filmmakers seriouslyaimed at making a good and endearing story and it comes through. Thecomputer smurfs blend well with the real environment. Hank Azaria is agood choice for the role of Gargamel. Really nothing much to complain,go see it for yourself!
Anthony Martino (21 April 2012)
It's no Citizen Kane, but it's good fun for kids and it's a good familyfilm. It's basically the film Enchanted, where fairy tale creatures arebrought into a modern setting. Only it's with Smurfs. It was fun seeing Neil Patrick Harris interact with the Smurfs and HankAzaria is great as Gargamel. And the Smurfs themselves are enjoyable, although most of their humor consists of using the word "Smurf" foreverything. However, I don't appreciate vulgar humor in children's filmand this movie has a little bit of that. Vulgar humor in kid's moviesalways seem forced and it's no exception in "Smurfs"That's basically all I have to say. See it in 3D. It's good family fun.And as a silly family movie I give it a 10. As a film all together, a3.

Despite me trying to be as neutral as possible before settling down towatch a film I found myself preparing for the long haul when I decidedto watch The Smurfs. As a kid I never really got into them but didoccasionally catch a TV show or two so wasn't flying completely intothe unknown like some of the more recent comic book characters that Ihave reviewed.Upon entering the world of the Smurfs we find the blue crittersrelaxing in their mushroom metropolis preparing for the special Bluemoon festival. But all is not well- the evil wizard Gargamel (HankAzaria), after years of searching, has finally found their village. Inthe ensuing chaos he chases some of the Smurfs out of their villagewhere they are sucked through a vortex and into our world. Determinedto capture them so he can harness their Smurf goodness, Gargamel andhis cat follow them through. So begins the race to get back to theirworld before they are captured.Given I was expecting the absolute worst, the film managed to liftitself above that lowly bar and not bore me to tears within 20 minutes. Also, somewhat surprisingly, there were a couple of times where mypreprepared grimace transformed itself into something resembling asmirk. This was in most part down to the performance of Azaria. It's noOscar worth performance but is probably the highest you can go whilstacting in something that has so specifically be designed for anaudience whose age can be counted on one hand. This brings me to mynext point...Why does Hollywood think that just because they are making a film forchildren that it can forego any form of quality. They seem to take thestance that just because their audience is young no effort will berequired to keep them entertained and who cares if it's rubbish as it'sonly a kid's movie- just fill the screen with bright colours and heypresto instant success. I'm not sure if the fact that they think thisrepresents entertainment or that the public actually accept it as suchis more worrying to me.One thing that slowly ate away at my sanity during The Smurfs is theirhabit of making sure at least every sentence has the word smurf in itwhether it is being used as an insult, during a joke or just replacinga generic word. Most of the time it was used as a tool to get theSmurfs cursing away without affecting the film's U certificate. And ifthat doesn't worm its way into your head then I challenge even the mostanti Smurf amongst you to escape from this film without humming theircatchy Smurf tune at least a couple of times after leaving the cinema. This is Katy Perry's (Smurfette) first major voyage onto the big screenand I was not convinced much like many of the other voices behind theblue faces. I also don't understand why they felt it necessary tosqueeze in her singing part of one of her songs either given that itwon't make 5 year old go out and download it. The non CGI cast wasn'tmuch better with the casting guys plan to throw in successful TV actorsnot having the desired effect as they failed to impress in their roleson the big screen. Neil Patrick Harris especially didn't work as thedoting husband. The animation just about held up but there were some points when itbecame obvious that the actors were interacting with themselves ratherthan the Smurfs particularly when being held or embraced and at othertimes the Smurfs looked a bit too fake. I can't understand why, if yourgoing to make yourself a CGI fest Smurf movie, you set it in the realworld. I'm sure that it would have been a much more enjoyable film ifthey had stayed in 'Smurfland' and battled Gargamel there. As for the story, it was atypical for a children's film keeping theplot quite simple whilst throwing in a sprinkling of slapstick comedyand funny characters to get most of the laughs. I was expecting theadult audience to be completely disengaged but there were some momentsthat hit the double entendre mark and would have woken the adultswhilst flying over the heads of the rest. Don't get me wrong, this isstill geared 95% to a kid audience but I was expecting 100% so waspleasantly surprised at the inclusion of a few adult themed jokes. The only reason you are going to want to pay to see this would be ifyou've got yourself a couple of kids as they are bound to enjoy. As forthe rest of us, although it wasn't a complete waste of time (thinkGarfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks) I'd rather go and smurf a smurf.(Let your imaginations run wild- answers on a postcard).Rating: D+ For further reviews feel free to check out:http://www.fanaticalaboutfilms.com
