Ben Affleck CAN direct

Ben Affleck has proved he is good at directing movies. That's not tosay this was a mindblowing movie, it was a very competent, well acted, well directed movie with some humor at moments and some intense actionsequences. The movie follows Doug MacRay, a bank robber who pursues a woman he andhis crew had just abducted to try and befriend her. Relationships getcomplicated and the usual drama follows. Ben Affleck can besurprisingly affecting in his roles - he is a rather likable characterdespite being a crook. His other crew are not so memorable - JeremyRenner is an interesting portrait, but not something we have not seenbefore. He is the typical bad ass who eventually steps beyond hisbounds. Honestly, I don't even remember or care about the other twoguys. The woman, played by Rebecca Hall, does a solid job as Claire Keesey. We see her hardships, her torment and anguish (albeit a bit too much). The chemistry between her and Affleck is not really there, but hey,it's basically an action movie. Blake Lively seems out of place asMacRay's former lover. Jon Hamm plays a standard role as the harddriving cop who will stop at nothing. And Affleck's bosses are funnybut not really memorable.Affleck also directed The Town, and he seem to has a thing for theaction camera. Most action sequences are fast paced and suspenseful(though EVERY bank heist reminds me of The Dark Knight, but that's justmy geeky self). A problem I had with the heists was similar to what afriend pointed out: the robbers prepared hardcore for each heist, withhuge guns and armor. My question is: why? Heists are supposed to bequiet, usually, and guns are used for crowd control and backup. EVERYheist in this movie went a little bit wrong. These crooks are eitherreal amateurs or they suck at their jobs. The plot was stretched a bit thin, and some of the motivations of thecharacters baffled me a bit. Some things were just unclear with thecharacters, and a lot of loose ends were not tied up. However, it's notreally a big deal to me, as I enjoyed watching it and I took it forwhat it was: an action film with a little heart.I saw this at a free screening: I'm not sure if I'd pay to see it. It'spretty standard fare; however, it's rather well-directed standard fare,if that makes any sense.7/10

PROBABLY BEN'S BEST SINCE GOOD WILL HUNTING!

I have always thought that Ben Affleck has gotten a bad rap, I usually enjoy him in the films he has made...there could be a few exceptions, but I could say that about a lot of other good actors too. He's not going to win a best actor award, but he is someone I want to watch in a film. The Town returns to Affleck's roots of Boston and delivers a very good crime drama with some interesting sub plots. I found this film very engrossing, but not perfect. Some more detail to the characters would have paid off greatly, but it is still an impressive piece of work from Mr. Affleck who directed, co-wrote and stars in this little tale of love and honor among thieves.

Get off your high horses, guys...

I've been reading a couple of reviews here, and was surprised, grantedout of only 10 comments written to this moment, to see raving blabberon "most complex heist movie since...", or "Ben has proved that x moviewas not a fluke", and even references to "Good Will ..", and one evenmentioned Oscar nominations. Obviously some of these people have beenborn only 10 years ago, or else they would recognize the botchedrip-off of such heist movies as Point Break 1991, or more recently Heat1995(which is a remake of a lesser version of itself LA Takedown 1989),to name but the most shamelessly plagiarized ones. So Ben didn't reallydig too deep for inspiration. I will call it inspiration although aplagiarism law suit wouldn't come as a surprise to me in relation toThe Town. I guess Ben saw himself as kind of a Mc Cauley-de Niro inHeat, Hamm would be Hanna-Pacino, Jeremy Renner a kind of TomSizemore-Cheritto, and Rebecca Hall-Amy Brenneman-Eady. I especiallyliked the phone conversation between Ben and her where she stands atthe window with all police waiting and she gives him the sign, wink!,that she's under surveillance and he should split...(to use a bitof heist flick lingo, myself)Does it remind anyone of the scene whereAshley Judd gives Val Kilmer the sign that he should disappear, afterthe heist gone wrong? I guess not, for the time being.I won't even start with the gratuitous work-out scene where Ben showsus his six-pack...that's Sly-land already, where he createsopportunities for himself, like Rocky. Also, there are some f-wordwritten to a small piece of paper jokes, the guys in the last row willlaugh at for sure. Real brain puzzlers. Acting, on Ben's part is nosurprise. He walks around frown-mouthed and thinks he is in character.Pityfull. Hamm does not have another persona outside Mad Men, andshould stick to TV, in my opinion. Direction-I especially enjoyed theshaky close-up camera work during the action sequences, to createdynamism, no doubt Ben must have thought to himself. Altogether a plot-holes filled rip-off, and not a good one at that, either.Oh, and one more thing, why again did Bendoug have to go poking aroundClaire? To find out how much she knows? After the FBI had alreadyquestioned her? So he can attract more attention to himself? Well Iguess by asking these questions the whole plot kind of unravels like apoorly woven 5 bucks sweater when you pull a loose thread...

Deserved high ratings and praise

This past month, this movie was on the movie channels, over and over. Itrust that people who had not seen it got a chance to do so by now andif that wasn't enough, word of mouth should also have sealed the dealof the financial success of the movie. I loved it. I'd be suspicious ofthose who did not; avoid these people because who knows what they'recapable of. Yeah yeah everybody's entitled to their opinion and Icertainly don't hold back writing mine, but it's like the Goth people,if you know what I mean.Affleck did a superb job directing and was also quite good in his roleas Doug MacRay. Jeremy Renner has proved again what powerful charactershe's capable of playing. Renner is as believable an Irishman as he canbe a redneck. In Renner's lesser known flicks he's also played somescary dudes (guidelines preclude me from using the word M**F**) such asFred in "A little trip to heaven" and Jeffrey Dahmer in "Dahmer". AsBrian Gamble in "S.W.A.T.", he was not as scary as he was intense. Iwas most pleased to see the see the luscious Rebecca Hall; I'm sorry ifusing the term offends some but I can't help it if I think she's hot aswell as an accomplished actor.Affleck has managed to do what very few actors have over time, utterwords, a line or an expression, that becomes famous in of itself, andthat line was: " I need your help. I can't tell you what it is; you cannever ask me about it later and we're going to hurt some people." It'sas classic as Eastwood's "Do you feel lucky punk?" or "Go ahead; makemy day!"

Best Movie of the Year

I've never been a big fan of Ben Affleck, but if this movie doesn't win the Oscar for best picture, it will be a crime. It's every bit as good as past winners like the Hurt Locker and The Departed. It's non-stop action with a love story mixed in, so women will enjoy it as much as men.

Well acted and directed bank heist film

Let me say upfront that I had never been impressed with Ben Affleck's acting abilities as I have always found him somewhat wooden and limited in emotional range. However, I was quite impressed with not just Ben's acting but also his directing skills in this movie. The plot has enough twists to keep you guessing and the acting is excellent all around. Perhaps its because many of the recent movies I have seen have not lived up to my expectations, but I think this movie stands out among a lot of the other movies that are being made. Highly reccomended.

Jeremy Renner, Oscar nom?

The Town, has an uncanny ability to make crime seem very cool. Whetherit's dousing a bank with bleach after a hectic robbery, bashing in abank manager's face with an AK-47 then whispering him something sly, orseamlessly switching getaway cars after tearing through the crammedNorth End of Boston at breakneck speeds. The Town, or maybe rather it'sdirector, Ben Affleck, is masterful at depicting the brazen activitiesof the underworld, seen through the eyes of a couple ofCharlestown-bred criminal "brothers". The film stars Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, andBlake Lively. It's a story about a couple of bank robbers who during aheist are forced to take a hostage, who they later find lives a fewblocks from them in the small neighborhood of Boston, known asCharlestown. Charlestown is credited as being the bank robbery capitalof the world (Which for some reason to me, doesn't seem possible). But,nevertheless this is an intriguing claim and adequately aids to thepacing of the very fast-paced opening of the film. Affleck and Renner are the main characters, with Hamm, of "Mad Men"fame playing the role of the FBI agent charged with the task ofcatching these criminals. Hall plays the role of, Claire Keesey, thebank manager who is taken hostage. The movie is cast very well, withsupporting roles having a very authentic feel to them. Affleck showshis directing prowess by crafting a 2 hour long crime thriller thatwill show audiences across the country a side of Boston they probablydidn't know existed. He blends frenetic paced gunfights with FenwayPark as the backdrop with much softer dialogue heavy scenes betweenRenner, Liively, Hall, and himself. The Town is one of the best movies of the early fall season, with somedrawing comparisons of it to "The Departed". I'm not sure it will havethe legs to carry it into awards season, but I wouldn't be surprised tosee Renner get an Oscar nomination for his supporting role.

The Town is the Bomb!

In the opening moments of the film, it is established that Charlestown,Massachusetts (a suburb of Boston) is the bank robbery capital of theworld. It is, according to the information offered the audience, a wayof life there. In some cases, it spans generations. Doug MacRay (BenAffleck) is a man who lives up—or down—to the town's reputation.Doug and his best friend, James "Jem" Coughlin (Jeremy Renner) head upa small gang of very professional bank robbers. Their usual thoroughplanning and professional execution gets them in, out, and away fromtheir target in short order. But a series of small hitches combinedwith Jem's short temper changes everything when he decides to take BankManager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall) hostage. Although Claire isreleased unharmed, Jem obsesses about what she may have seen or whatshe might know. To satisfy both Jem and his own doubts, Doug decideshe'll find out.Meanwhile, the FBI is obviously interested in a bank robbery, but thehostage gives Special Agent Adam Frawley (Jon Hamm) what he hopes willbe enough information to catch the gang. With a number of agents andresources at his disposal, he begins his investigation by questioningClaire and then starts collecting information to help him identify andcatch the robbers. The secrets held close by the people of Charlestown, though, won't begiven up easily and perhaps not without violence. Not to the FBI forsure, and perhaps not even to one of Charlestown's own as Doug soonbegins to find out as he asks some questions of his own.The Town is based on a 2005 book entitled "Prince of Thieves" by ChuckHogan. The book was brilliantly adapted by Peter Craig, Ben Affleck, and Aaron Stockard. Affleck also directed The Town. In some cases, actors who try to do too much do a disservice to each of their jobs. Inthis case, though, Affleck proved his Oscar® for co-writing Good WillHunting was no fluke, nor was his acclaimed directorial debut for GoneBaby Gone any accident. He writes and directs The Town withunbelievable skill, and then to top it off, his acting is justterrific.Jeremy Renner doesn't play the most sympathetic of characters, but hemakes Jem so real that it's difficult to judge him for his many flaws.Jon Hamm is entirely believable as a frustrated FBI agent, and RebeccaHall meshes well with Affleck in their scenes together. The standouthere (aside from Affleck, of course) is the surprising Blake Lively. Ina role as Jem's troubled sister, she's nothing short of amazing. Afterthe casting directors see her here, you can bet we'll be seeing more ofher on the big screen in the future.BOTTOM LINE: Even before its release, The Town was generating some veryexciting buzz about Ben Affleck. Although the rest of the cast issuperb and the story itself is a gripping one, Affleck is clearlycoming into his own as a multi-talented movie maker. As far as I'mconcerned, The Town is must see viewing.POLITICAL NOTES: Surprisingly (especially given the FBI's extensiveinvolvement in the storyline) none.FAMILY SUITABILITY: The Town is rated R for "strong violence, pervasivelanguage, some sexuality and drug use," and it should be. It is in noway suitable for children or younger teens (who probably won't like itanyway). But for mature teens and adults, The Town offers a raremovie-going experience: An extraordinarily well made and intelligentfilm that also offers an exciting two hours in the theatre.

Rock Solid Town

I parked my getaway car in Harvard Yard

After his success directing the gritty and absorbing 2007 GONE BABY GONE, Ben Affleck's next directorial feature was this over-the-top heist fantasy that's supposed to be in a similar milieu (working class Boston) but which is more of a fantasy thriller. Affleck plays Doug Macray, a handsome working stiff from deepest darkest Charlestown, the notorious crime-ridden neighborhood of Boston around the Bunker Hill Monument; with a father (Chris Cooper) serving multiple life terms in prison and a friend-who-is-all-but-a-brother (Jeremy Renner) pressuring him, he has no choice but to take to the mean streets and rob armored cars and banks in the streets of Boston and Cambridge. But if the cheap pubs and overripe Boston accents suggest realism, the film veers wildly from realism in its portraying of the superheists that Doug plans with the supergenius criminal planning of a Thomas Crown or a Lex Luthor. Constantly changing elaborate disguises and foreseeing every eventuality to the smallest detail, Doug's gang has the FBI (led by Jon Hamm) completely buffaloed, which Doug (a decent sort deep down, of course) falls madly in love, surreptitiously, with a tasteful, accentless bank manager (Rebecca Hall) he in disguise previously took hostage in a heist, and who represents A Better Life for Affleck's character. But (of course), just when he thought he was out, they keep pullin' him back in... There aren't many heist and gangster movie cliches this film ever avoids, but, mysteriously, critics have taken it very seriously, probably because of the adrenaline charge that Doug's fancy heists admittedly provide. Jeremy Renner is effective in his turn as a mean little thug who starts out like Joe Pesci in GOODFELLAS but by the end is more like the crazed Jimmy Cagney at the end of WHITE HEAT; Affleck himself is quite good in his ridiculous role; and poor Jon Hamm has to wrestle with phrases the screenwriters seem to have trotted out to allow him to flaunt a faux-Boston accent (one of his choicer lines entails both the phrases "Star Market" and "a roll of quarters"). At the very least you never get bored with the film; but though it's not bad, it's also pretty silly.

realistic performance

A well done film that had great plot twists and surprises in theaction. I was not surprised that actors Chris Cooper, Rebecca Hall orPete Postlewaite were very good in this engaging, slightlynerve-wracking, yet sensitively-portrayed film. But I was verysurprised to see Ben Affleck as a.) for once not being totallyirritating, b.) being actually likable and you want to root for ischaracter, and c.) directing and starring in a good film. My, my. BlakeLively was completely believable as a troubled, drugged-up townie girl.Jeremy Renner was menacing and moving. The film was well-written,clever, and done in a very non-judgmental, gritty realism style. Iliked it all the way through, save the very last corny shot. Now, Mr.Affleck, was that necessary?

Boston Loves Ben

This was a good movie. I am not a big Ben fan but with each movie Iwatch him in, and with each movie he does, he grows. He clearly ownsthis movie. He's hunky and tough and gritty , yet vulnerable and thatmakes his character strong. It has the feel of 'The Departed' and being from Boston myself, theaccents were perfect. Ben of course worked in all the Boston hot spotsand it worked in this movie.I really did find myself in his corner despite the fact that he wastechnically a 'bad guy'.Although Jon Hamm wasn't great in this , the rest of the supportingcast was; along with great location shots, great acting and a trulygreat story add up to another fabulous Boston flick.Good job Ben! Now we need another with you and Matt!

The bottom of the pile

The people rating this movie well must not watch many movies. There hasbeen some really great heist / bank robbery movies over the years, andthis is not one of them. The scenes come at you in a boring andpredictable fashion. One cliché after another. I wanted to like thefilm. I was expecting something with sizzling action and unexpectedplot twists, but it just wasn't there. Very little characterdevelopment left me not caring at all about some of the leads. This isall too common in many movies today. The directors are so intent ongetting to the "fun stuff" that the groundwork isn't covered. Anyway,I'm not going to waste any more time reviewing a movie that wasted mytime.

jjnoahjames (10 May 2012)

Good watch but highly overrated movie.

I could explain this plot in detail but it's kind of familiar. Itinvolves robbery, guns, and death. It also includes some great actorsand they fit their parts well. But you already knew that.I've seen this before....not once, or twice, or thrice, but a milliontimes under Martin Scorsese or mimicking directors of him. This was a great watch yet I really got board. I thought the moviewould escalate in to something a little bit better than what I had seenbut it never climbed above any thing else. If this is your kind of film. I recommended it. If it's not don't wasteyour time.

What a crazy ride! A great view of Boston and Fenway

This review is from: The Town (Two-Disc Extended Cut) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I saw this movie in the theater and absolutely loved it. It's one of those types of movies that really keeps you on the edge of your seat with an adrenaline rush. Absolutely loved it in the theaters and knew right away I wanted to own it.When this combo pack came out I thought the idea was awesome and the price of all formats in 1 was a great deal (DVD, Digital and Blu-Ray). I am hoping I can find more movies in this combo set. Really versatile. The movie itself is a Boston-lover's dream. It's packed with excitement from the first 5 minutes onward. There are unexpected twists and turns and it's a good crime flick ... but in this one, you want the bad guys to win. It blends history with fiction well and the viewer really gets a great feel of the struggle in "Charlestown". Hats off to Jeremy Renner and Ben Affleck for great performances and great chemistry on the set. As a Red Sox fan, I loved when filming took place in "the Cathedral of Boston" (Fenway Park) and you really get true filming in the bowels of this classic ball park. This set is filled with extras, and one of the extras has to do with how filming took place in Fenway Park.Just an all out great film. Loved it. I put the digital copy on my iPad to watch on trips, etc. and have both the Blu-ray extended cut with some extra scenes and the DVD. If you love a well done action flick with a little Irish Mob action ... you'll love this. Twists and turns ... great stuff!

Solid crime thriller with pretensions of being something more

** Minor spoilers ahead **A daring bank heist: four armed robbers in heavy disguises hit a bank in urban Boston, executing every detail with clockwork precision - but despite their precautions, one of the employees manages to trigger a silent alarm, and the cops interrupt them. Taking one of the managers (Rebecca Hall) as hostage, they flee the scene and manage a getaway without being apparently identified, but paranoid about what the bank manager may have figured out they decide to watch over her. The leader of the group, Doug (Ben Affleck) takes on the task, and eventually meets her, gets to know her, and...well, you might be able to guess where it's going, as this helps to cause complications with the rest of the group, especially his childhood friend (Jeremy Renner) and as Doug starts to question how much longer he wants to maintain his life of crime.Ben Affleck's second film as director is a solid genre piece, with good-to-excellent performances for the most part, but there's no question that it's in some ways too beholden to typical crime genre tropes, and rather predictable. We have Doug, the kid from the old neighborhood (Charlestown, an old neighborhood of Boston that used to be an independent city) who unthinkingly follows a life of crime (bank and armored car robberies) until he realizes there might be a reason to stop; we've got his best buddy (Renner) who keeps guilting him into staying at it, and who is more than a borderline psycho; and the incredibly cold-blooded mob leader who runs the whole operation and won't let anybody leave it (Pete Postlethwaite); the tough FBI agent who has to be almost as dirty as the criminals (Jon Hamm); the victim-girlfriend who doesn't know about the life of crime (Rebecca Hall) and who represents a better life - being educated and not from the projects and all; the scorned, sleazy ex-girlfriend (Blake Lively), and a plot that mostly goes from a to b to c.But Affleck has a decent visual sense, a really good eye for the neighborhood details, and a solid way of putting together an action sequence - the robberies and car chases are exciting and punchy without relying too much on the typical shaky-cam that to my mind has ruined a lot of action cinema over the past decade. And he's got an excellent touch with his actors, particularly the women - I would be astonished and disappointed if the British Hall, disappearing completely into an American character, doesn't get some awards attention, despite some thinness in the writing of her character. I'm not sure that I'm crazy about Affleck's own performance, but his character more than most is hurt by the generic qualities of the script, and the relationship with Hall never comes off as terribly believable from either character's POV. And there's an attempt I think that grows over the course of the running time at making this story out to be something more than an action-thriller (especially in the rather pretentious snippet of closing narration) that doesn't entirely work - the film can't decide ultimately between being a drama and an action film and isn't capable of handling both smoothly at the same time. I think we'd have to be more sympathetic to Affleck's character to really get the whole "tragedy of a life in the projects" sense that is building; but I for one can't really see a guy who is still willing to fire automatic weapons at cops, with bystanders in close proximity, even after he's claimed that he's going to change his life, as anything like a hero.Still, despite some fairly significant problems in the screenplay and characterizations, this adds up to a very entertaining piece of work, and Affleck's sense of Boston and the urban terrain is exciting and very solidly real. I hope he continues to make pictures in the city where he grew up; New York and L.A. get enough visibility in films. Those who haven't seen a zillion other films of this type and who respond a little bit better to the central romantic/dramatic arc of the story will probably love this film, and I'll certainly be catching up with GONE BABY GONE, Affleck's first film as director, and with Rebecca Hall's earlier performances.

TOWN, ROCKS!!!

This review is from: The Town (Two-Disc Extended Cut) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I honestly wasn't a Ben Affleck fan before this film. Now, I totally am. This is an amazing action film. Very well performed. From start to finish, this one should have you at the edge of your seat, waiting for the next thing to happen. I really thought the nun masks were creepy looking. Ben Affleck seems to be in the shape of his life. He is such a strong character in this film. Convincingly capable of being a gentle character and the hard liner. If you're an action fan, this is a must see. You will not be dissappointed. A+

Catch Affleck's Flick.

Do yourself a favour if 'The Town' is on your one-to-watch list, buythe extended (an extra 25 minutes) edition - if you waste your timewith the two hour version, 'the fruit in a bag' scene (near the end)will have you confused. The Town (EE), is definitely worth the viewing. The story-line is verybelievable, the acting top-notch, the ending intelligent. Why there has to be various running times for too many movies is beyondmy comprehension - a shorter running version of the creator'sthoroughness, time and effort, is not what its director intended.Les D

Gripping

This movie grabbed me from the opening scenes and didn't let go of me for even a moment until the very end. Well done! There's a blend of action, romance, and intrigue, the acting is solid, the characters are believable while having depth, and the story is interesting in a Bostonian blue-collar struggle sort of way. We wind up simultaneously disliking the lead character (because he's a criminal) and liking him (because he clearly still has goodness and moral criteria in him), and that ambivalence nicely ties in with real life.Though there was a minor plot flaw which my wife picked up also, it wasn't large enough to ruin the movie, and overall I enjoyed the movie enough to readily recommend it.

(06 May 2012)

The Town will exceed your expectations.

Most of the time when it comes to Ben Affleckhe delivers a great performancein whatever type of movie hes in whether its drama, comedy, suspense, action, thriller ect. This movie is not different its action, drama, suspense all in one. Its about a group of friends who rob banks in Mass. The two standout performances in my view Go to Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner, their roles were very in depth emotionally and they delivered on the roles. Ben Affleck's character falls for a girl whom was involved in one of the robbery, he begins to feel remorse, saddness, regret and anger sorrounding the events hes partaken in. This was one of the best movies ive seen in regards to an Affleck film. When It comes down to it I highly recommened this movie to anyone, I feel they will be surprised and amused by it. At points it will get your emotions going whether sad, angry, nervous for the characters you really get into it. Go Blu Ray with this movie over dvd the shooting, chase and all around sound and picture will suit the film better on it. Enjoy the movie it really is must see in alot of respects and I hope this review did it justice and helps you guys out when choosing to view it or not.
