From the beginning to the end the movie kept me on the edge of my seat.Since "kick ass and avatar" I haven't felt this way. Choreography ofthe fighting scenes, overall editing, and the directing were fantasticand flawless. As an Asian I really appreciated the fact that the movieattempted to break some of the main stream movies norm. When was thelast time we saw a white girl falls in love with an Asian guy. I can'tremember. I personally got tired of Asians portrayal of kung fufighting emotionless, not full, plastic characters like Jet Li andJackie Chan do. Yes this movie is all about kung fu and flying. Howeverit has well developed characters that painted the picture more vividly.I want to see a main stream movie with an ordinary Asian maincharacter. And this movie had some progress towards my wish.

Eastern and Western have something in common (among others), they canboth be very stylish.Think of two Samurai on a wooden Bridge surrounded by cherry Blossomswith a matching Japanese Track or two Cowboys meeting at Noon, surrounded by dirt and sand also with a nice accommodating track. Thesemoments entertain just by their audiovisual appearance. This Movie has a few of such Moments. Although none of them is goodenough to reinvent the genre, they are somewhat stylish and enjoyable. There is not much else worth mentioning. The Story tends to bestraightforward. Bad Guy turning Good must have been done to deadalready. So it very much depends on your expectations how this Moviewill work for you.Remember, that Eastern and Western, especially when they are made"Stylish", tend to overdue a lot. So if a Swordsman cutting down a Armyarmed with Rifles and Guns isn't gonna be a Problem for you, than youmight wanna give this one a Chance.

An absolute wonderful mishmash of ideas and styles. It doesn't alwayswork, but when it does it is exciting stuff. The film takes martialarts, stylized violence, westerns, and a kind of French Jeunet style. Aswordsman disobeys his clan and runs off to the wild west. Not any wildwest town though, this is "The Paris" of the west. A town trying tolure in tourists by setting up a circus. The film is mostly set-up, andgets bogged down at times by having two separate villains, a band ofbandits and a band of ninjas. I liked the correlation between theromantic interests. One is a girl out to avenge her family, and the manshe falls for is a man that killed a baby girl's entire family. It'sthe thin line between duty and honor that make this work. It also has alot of fun towards the end, with awesome CGI, explosions, and clownsbrandishing guns. A bit of silly fun for those that like ninjas, clowns, and cowboys.

I'm not sure what studio people or crew/family are associated withdowning everybody's negative critique of this dorky piece of junk, butman, you people are trying to silence some truth, big time! Wow, thismovie was awful! Kate Bosworth is terrible in this movie. I haven't seen anything elseshe's done that I remember her much from, but judging by this, "Shecan't act!" Holy Crap! The worst attempt at a southern accent. Nobodytalks that way in the south, Kate, nor the west. Who the hell was yourcoach for this? I read in another review where she almost ruins themovie by herself and I'll be damned if that isn't accurate . . . Idon't want to be mean, but know what you can do and can't do. We aretalking about supposedly humorous lines and situations making peopleshake their heads instead of laughing. Our main actor has no lines almost and the lines we do hear are deadpanand stiff. He really just walks around and looks at everyone andeverything with a blank expression. How fake can a movie get? I realize people were temporarily excited byCGI in films, but man, is it becoming increasingly bad and cheaplooking. You can see where the sets end! With the old Hollywood mannerof shooting everything in studio with rear projections, we have theexact same thing using modern technology. It really does not look anybetter, which would be okay if the story, directing and acting worked, but it does not here! To all who remember "King Solomon's Mines," we have her ugly kid sisterright here.

I'm hoping that we soon get through this phase of movie making, becauseit's really making movies awful. The plot line is that the lead assassin for a Chinese clan has wipedout the opposing clan save one small female baby. He flees the countryfor the American Old West, and finds a town of circus freaks who arethemselves being terrorized by some quasi-military types lead by a"Colonel" who is into raping kids.We get a ton of kewl explosions and some gravity-defying Chinese.(Seriously, I work with several Chinese people and have never seen themdefy gravity.) Once in a while they get somewhere near an interestingcharacter relationship or point, but then they have to go back into theexplosions and fighting scenes....The fact the lead actor was mangling his lines in English didn't helpmatters much, either.

I've always valued the scores at this site, and it only has let me downa couple of times...oh yea the movie...horrible! So I wasn't expecting much from this movie. I like to take movies forwhat they are, and I'll watch these types hoping to find a sleepermovie that was great in it's own way or I go looking to be entertainedand see a good sword fight, I got neither.I watched more entertaining anime, I assume the only reason they referanime is because the action is supposed to be artsy, for a movie that'ssupposed to be about the "BEST SWORDSMAN EVER" there's almost NO ACTUALSWORD FIGHTING. He swings his sword and horrible CGI blood and bodiesfly. Did someone mention "300"? The only thing 300 about this movie isa bunch of ninja's fly out of water and freeze pose in the air.Tasteless racism, want racism? watch Gran Torino (great movie).Stereotypical Asian guy with no expression and speakie Engrish but onlyhas 10 lines in the whole movie. A black midget named "8 ball" (it's aderogatory term for blacks). Kate Bosworth is hot but reminded me of aliving "Jessie" from Toy Story, rooting tooting red head cowgirl.WANT TO SEE A GOOD NINJA MOVIE?!?...watch "ninja assassin", great oldschool ninja ways meets modern guns and society.

one of my favorite TV shows.Like in "Kung-Fu" the hero in "Warrior's Way" is on the run and hiding in the American West. "Kung-Fu" used slow motion for the action sequence. "Warrior's Way" uses "No" motion for the action, but that's OK. It's the characters that give this movie its richness. Odd ball characters, losers and society's rejects that holds this movie together. Warrior's Way has its share of flaws, but has so much to offer. The music alone is "FANTASTIC" and worth the price of admission. The writer / director of this movie has a wonderful way of telling a story and his photography is unique.Job well done!!!

This is just what it is: an out and out fun film for those who likedanything from Highlander to Wanted and the Tournament or a ton of otherfilms with blades and assassins. It is well-made with high productionvalues with plenty of creativity in the camera work for both bulletsand swords and all in all has great production values. The acting and action are both very good for this type of film: thewhole set-up is that this will be legen (wait for it....) - dary; Ilike that the film took its time to explain and build and createrelationships. But it's mostly about the action of the world's greatestevaar swordsman, and on that basis it succeeds beautifully. Yes, theviolence is up there, but it is comic book and not horror.Better than normal acting for this type of film (and yes there are someaccent slips, but Geoffrey Rush is great) and all in all it issurprising how good a film it is to watch. All in all, if you ever wanted one man and one woman and a baby to takeon all comers then this will be up your street. Great fun and actuallya very well-made and very watchable film.

If someone had to have told me that the film was a warrior/ninja/spaghetti western that contained clowns, an assassin, a circus, a sword master, a town drowning in sand, outlaws, and visually stunning shots involving flowers, blood, and severed body parts... I wouldn't have paid money to see the film. This film is worth the rent for people who don't mind mixed concept films. Its neither totally a western nor is it totally a martial arts/sword/ samurai. I think the film could have benefited from being shot out in a natural environment instead of on a set. The way it's shot is less like Hero and like a graphic novel film like 300. I thought the main problem with this one would be with the script. The main problem with the film is that it feels a bit overwrought and strangled at times by it's efforts to be novel or cool. For me that is how a lot of the smarter and more cooler aspects of the film are lost. What was up with the words floating in the air in the first scene(NOT A SPOILER: You will have to see the film to understand what I'm talking about)? It didn't work in Wanted and it didn't work in this film. It's intrusive, unimaginative and not novel. Watch this film after you've had some sleep and are interested in something that is not quite like the type of film that the image of the film posted on Amazon suggests. Yes it is a film about a warrior ... it's just not the kind of warrior film your used to.

WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS MOVIE BASED ON THE TRAILER ALTHOUTH MY EXPECTATIONS WERE TEMPERED BY NO RELEASE FOR CRITICS. I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. JANG IS TERRIFIC AS THE LEAD, KATE BOSWORTH IS AS ADORABLE AS EVER. THE STORY AND THE ACTION WORK. THE FILM IS SHOT VERY STYLISTICALLY. I GIVE IT A STRONG THUMBS UP ALTHOUGH I WOULDN'T BRING THE KIDS GIVE THE LEVEL OF VIOLENCE.

BOTTOM LINE: Everyone I went to see the movie with said, I thought theAmerican was bad, but this one is actually worse.Today I went to see this movie with my movie-watching pals. And guesswhat, us and the rest of the audience were all laughing and making funof how bad the movie was. The scene right before the last one was sounbearably bad, everyone was laughing so hard that you could not hearanything else besides laughter, and the last scene really killed it.Lets start with the good. The visuals were very flashy, nice lightningand good camera angles, everything the new movies have. The sound wasgood, and the music sounded pretty, and was appropriate for the scenes. The comedy scenes were indeed funny, and the action moments werefinely-paced, and captured my attention. Costume design was fine too.Now for the bad. This movie feels like another one of those flickswhere a director cannot decide whether its a comedy or an action movie,so it ended up as something in between (Its far from Machete though). Ican't go as far as to say that comedy or drama scenes decide tosuddenly barge into the plot as they did in Tidal Wave or The Host. But, I must state that in order for a movie to be fully a comedy, everyscene must contain jokes. Here, in action scenes there was nothingfunny - the action scenes, just like in any ACTION movie, focused onintense fighting, CGI, and gushing blood. What I'm trying to say is,this movie lacks consistent flow. The movie has a back story, then youslowly watch it fall apart, and in the end, you realize the "plot givesup before you do". The dialogue is laughable, and the majority of linesare so cheesy, if you look closely at any actor's lips, they areshaking - the actor is trying not to laugh! And speaking aboutemotions, the protagonist barely has any emotions to show at all. Also, whatever he says is mixed with heavy accent, just like early movieswith Schwarzenegger. Its fun to see Arnold kick behind in his movies, but what does Dong-gun Jang show? That's right, poker face. Some peoplesay that its a comedy, and you're supposed to laugh whenever somethinglooks or sounds cheesy, because that's what the director intended. Butguess what - its only funny in the right context! With an inconsistentflow of slapstick "Shaolin Soccer" goofs mixed with "CrouchingTiger-Hidden Dragon" action scenes, the only thing the viewer ends upgetting is garbled information. I always compare movies to other typesof art, because really, movie-making is a type of art. Are peoplesupposed to laugh at Picasso's paintings because they may seem strange? What about when a musician messes up on stage during a solo concert?BOTTOM LINE: Everyone I went to see the movie with said, I thought theAmerican was bad, but this one is actually worse.

Let's get down to brass tacks, shall we? In a nutshell it's a prettydamn good east meets west action flick. I don't know why everyone keepsthrowing around the word ninja with this film, as it's about 2 warriorclans intent on decimating the other, with one virtually winning itall. A bit slow at parts with the usual tripe about the ultimate badasslearning there's more to life than just cutting down one's enemies likeso much wheat. However, the it's worth the ultimate, and predictable, payoff in blood, guts, and gore. Not really memorable, but a good wayto kill a few hours on a Saturday night or lazy Sunday afternoon. Ifanything I was surprised to see an actor the statue of Rush in this.

This movie recaptures the magic that seems to have been lost after theearly 90's. You all remember E.T., The Never Ending Story, The Crow,The Karate Kid and the massive list from this generation that is oversatisfyingly long. Then at some point in the mid 90's, the corporationsseemed to become run by robotic automation and it's well under a dozenfilms per decade that embody the magic of that era. This film has it all and is one for the family if your kids are vergingon teen years. One review claims no substance and I must thoroughlydisagree, it's a very well rounded, evenly spread substance with theaction and characterization so liberal it's spilling over. You keepwanting more, you keep getting more but unlike the open endings of theera we all so long for, I doubt there will ever be a sequel.Unfortunately that's just the way this business now works but, onepriceless gem is most definitely better than none. Well worth the costof owning.

Well I turned up at the Multiplex without a clue what to watch and thenext film showing was Warriors Way. I asked the girl at the counterwhat it was about and she said " its like a Chinese martial arts film". Now while I am not a big action fan I have enjoyed many Martial artsfilms and a lot of Chinese films are visually creative and stunning andhave good story lines. The opening was pretty good so I chomped mypopcorn waiting for things to unfold.... which they didn't. Hero killsrival clan but refuses to kill baby girl, his own clan turns againsthim so he runs away to the wild west. He heads to a town where an oldfriend used to live but unfortunately his friend has passed away.OK so far not bad but within 10 minutes you realise the whole thing isfilmed indoors in a studio against blue screen and the backdrops areadded, everything looks artificial so you never believe he is in a realtown. On top of that everyone seems to be wearing fancy dress, many arecircus performers you see but even the normal folk's clothes look wrongsomehow. From here on nothing much happens except the heroines backstory and the introduction of a bad guy plus the ongoing approach ofhis home tribe the sad flutes who have managed to track him down. Most of the characters in the town seem to be retarded, now this ispartly because of ham acting and partly because they are maybe supposedto be a little bit strange. The only believable character is Geoffrey Rush who initially plays adrunk and has little screen time that is mainly for laughs but his roleincreases later on.Kate Bosworth plays the Heroine out for revenge but again acts like sheis one screw loose, there is one part in the middle with some stonesthat just made me cringe and go Ouch Ouch Ouch .......The Lead Don gun Juang, doesn't really say much and did not have muchCharisma. On top of that his action scenes were limited and when theydid happen you didn't know if it was him or just more CGI.The best actor in the film was the baby.By the time the big ending had arrived I was pretty bored and didn'treally care about the characters, except the baby. I then fell asleepabout 6 mins into the end fight scene occasionally waking to see aslice of action and then dozing off again. I think it was a case of whybother watching when i already know whats going to happen and do ireally care. I wouldn't mind but I wasn't even tired.Overall the film looked fake with some bad to ridiculous acting andmeaningless plot and non interesting story line. On top of that theaction was dull and always seemed like it was just going through themotions.Having said that the ending 2 minutes were quite good.I have given it a 4 out of 10 for the occasional bits that kept myinterest but overall it was not great. In fact it was one of the mostlifeless dull action films I have seen in a long time.
FTIGNORANT (04 May 2012)
Saw the sneak preview last night. It was funny, bloody and beautiful though sometimes not enthralling. Geoffry Rush was hilarious and the more ragged and drunk his characters are the better as far as I'm concerned and he is very drunk and ragged in this flick. He could very well be the same pirate as in PotC after deciding to leave the sea and wander the wild west. The action was gorey and yet stylish. The delayed blood spray after an intial blade attack is a staple in martial arts films and always a great technique in my view and this director delayed the spray as long as he could in some scenes creating much anticipation. It's all sort of toungue in cheek but serious enough to be exciting as well as delightful. It probably sounds odd but makeup did an incredible job coating these actors in blood as if it was sprayed on instead of just dumped on them in buckets. The effects team made a very strong effort with the CGI and green screen effects and only occasionally failed to suspend my belief to the point of distraction but only because they were attempting some very technical effects like having slow motion shot of a samuarai blade thrusting forward while splitting raindrops in half for example (the water wasn't quite real enough). They load up the movie with so many great effects that we've seen often in these types of films so that the minor and only mild flaws can be quickly forgotten because they are just as quickly replaced with more eye candy. Villains are great and they deserve to die horribly. Baby is hilarious. All I can say that is any sort of negative is that our star Ninja kills his enemies so quickly in some scenes that there is perhaps too much time left to be spent on the reltionship story line which causes the middle to drag a bit. However it's time used the flesh out the secondary characters well and once the Cowboys, Ninjas and Circus folks are fully engaged in killing each other that just allows us to care about who lives and who dies and this increases the enjoyment of the visceral slicing and dying. Spoiler Alert: Most will die! Go see it if you like the style and humor you find in movies like Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. This is not the tedious slog that Jonah Hex became because they actually deliver on the action and they aren't afraid to kill women and children or even the clowns... because that's what ninjas and cowboys do best. I can say with all scincerity that this is the best Cowboys vs Ninja movie I've ever seen.

...well if you can exclude me.Speaking critically this has got to be one of the most derivative, clichéd and incomprehensible movies I have ever seen. The dialog isstilted, the acting could use some work, and the plot is incrediblyredundant of the typical ninja films. On the other hand, on the entertainment scale, this film is trulybonkers, insane, you get the picture. You know from the beginning whena quote floats on the screen comic-book style, you know this is a filmnot to be taken seriously. You have a ninja warrior with a baby travelto the Wild West where he encounters a small town full of weird andmysterious people (it doesn't help that most of the town's citizens arecircus performers, to add to the insanity). This concept is quiteunusual in my honest opinion, and it looks like Korean writer/directorSngmoo Lee clearly had a blast in creating his "epic".The film looks like it was ripped out from a Japanese shonen manga andthen stapled together with an American Western comic book, and you getthis insane potpourri of ninjas, cowboys and clowns (yes, there aregun-toting clowns). The whole movie is just pure insanity that you'llwonder when the aliens, robots and pirates are going to show up. It ispulp, and it is unabashedly proud of it.The actors don't really do much, they more like phone in theirperformances, but in a movie like this, I don't think this is going tomatter. The lead, Korean superstar Jang Dong-gun gives a solemn, emotionless and mysterious (often mistaken as wooden) performance asthe hero, and he has quite an aura around him during the actionsequences. Kate Bosworth is kinda campy in her performance, with thestereotypical cowgirl accent and whatnot, but she looks sexy at times.Geoffrey Rush and Danny Huston seem to have a fun time hamming it upwith their roles, and Tony Cox phones it in with another funnyperformance, as usual. However it was a surprise to see Hong Kong actorLung Ti of "A Better Tomorrow" fame as the main villain, it was nice tosee a foreign actor of his caliber in a movie like this.Yes, the script has problems, most notably pacing problems at thebeginning. Yes, it is unoriginal and wooden at times. And yes, thespecial effects could look much better. But for what it's worth, it isinteresting in a crazy, bizarre, twisted way, and it is solidentertainment for those who are willing to try. It's a love it or hate-it type of popcorn movie; definitely not for the thinking kind.Overall rating: 51/100

When the greatest Samurai assassin will not kill the last enemy, ababy, he becomes the number one target of his clan. So he travels tothe American old west to stay with his friend. But can he truly changehis life? This is a fascinating intermixing of the oriental fightingmovies and the old western shoot-'em-ups. It makes one realize thatthey really are not that different after all. Add in a simple story, asimple subplot and lots of personal choices that must be made and youhave a very solid action film. Of course part of the fun is seeing bitsand pieces of some classic American westerns incorporated into thescript, as well as seeing them through another culture's eyes. This is a must see for action fans.
dbborroughs (02 May 2012)
Kung Fu Spaghetti Western about a warrior from the East sparing thelife of a baby of an opposing clan and fleeing to the American Westwith the baby in tow.Its a form over content film that mixes genres and styles intosomething that is going to be loved by some and hated by others thenagain depending upon mood ones attitude may change. The visual style is very much a manga infused style that comes fromdoing the film on blue/ green screen backgrounds. Everything is real, yet hyper stylized. Weare dealing with arch-types and characters andnot really real people which is fine. Arguing against the film becauseit isn't realistic is kind of missing the point, this is the cinematicequivalent of a boo hiss vaudeville show. The film riffs and borrows from dozens of films both from the east andwest. From Lone Wolf and Cub, to Django, to 300 to Casshern to Immortelto well take your pick.I like it but I don't love it. Part of the reason it didn't really workfor me is Kate Bosworth who gives too mannered a performance. If shehadn't tried so hard it would have been better.I do think it's worth seeing, however I'm kind of torn in that thevistas look good on the big screen but the film isn't really worthpaying full movie prices.

First of all, this is not your ordinary action movie, so don't expectany fast pace kung- fu/martial arts in here. There are action scenes, but they're more like spice to add to the story than the main purposeof the movie. Have you questioned why the all the scenes looked soartificial? All the actions was in slow motion? You can find every kindof stereotypes in here and the plot is extremely predictable? BecauseTHEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE THAT. Think of this movie like.. a folk tale that you read in a HansChristian Anderson's book. You open the book, it talked about awarrior's journey. He ran from the bads, he met friends, he foundpeace, he fought with the bads to protect the peace. Finally, he foughtwith the biggest enemy which is himself. He realized he can't stay, hecontinued his journey. End of story. It is a folk tale story that'stranslated to the big screen. The main thing is the humanity that liedunderneath. Anyone who expected more than that, really didn't grap themain point of this story. We went to watch this movie on my friend's 21st birthday. And yes ihave seen people left in the first 30 mins of the movie. But if youdon't stay till the end of the movie, you're missing the main point ofit. I liked it, most of my friends liked it, only one didn't like it.Therefore, with this type of movie, you either hate it or love it.This movie was directed by a Korean director, and this is his DEBUT. Ithought this is pretty good for a debut product. If anyone familiarwith Korean movies, unlike other movies, Korean movies tend to bereally slow pace, since they take their time to develop the story, aswell as the nature of the characters. Therefore, Korean movie usuallyhave deep meaning behind the scenes, and the characters development isricher, but you won't know unless you stay till the end. This movie isno exception.
