The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

I normally do not bother with adding to these forum reviews but feltcompelled to say something about this absolute LOAD OF RUBBISH. OMG.Really? I think I can rightfully say that I just sat through one of theworst superhero movies of all time. I thought Ironman 2 was bad butthis takes the cake. Wow!!Seriously people, if you are Marvel Comic fans, as I am, please do notexpect anything of value from this film. Only then will it be sure todisappoint less. Poor character development, shocking script, mediocre(at best) acting by some of the finest actors in the world. What wereHopkins, Skarsgard and Portman thinking? $$$! I guess the actors canonly be as good as the script.SPOILER ALERT!!! The appearance of S.L. Jackson after the credits atthe end of the film, in what I can only assume to be a teaser for thesequel(s), only rubbed salt into the wound.

I am married to a woman who doesn't follow comics or comic characters at all! As a matter of fact, she didn't even know that Iron Man was a comic book character until I broke it to her today...and she loved both those movies. I know, however, that if she knows that a character in a movie is based off a comic, then she would be apt to not want to participate in its viewing. So, when she told me that she saw a preview of a movie called, "Thor," and wanted to see it, I didn't bother telling her anything of the sort. I simply purchased the tickets and took her to the theater. Guess what? She loved it! And so did I!The Australian actor, Chris Hemsworth, does such an awesome and convincing job as The Mighty Thor from Asgard, that all the exceptional talent surrounding him only brings the picture from already Grade A quality to Grade A+ quality. Natalie Portman was perfectly cast, as was Kat Dennings, Stellan Skarsgard, Rene Russo (as Thor's mother, Frigga), and Tom Hiddleston (as Thor's brother, Loki). And let's not forget the powerful presence of the almost-unrecognizable Sir Anthony Hopkins as Thor's father, King Odin. The arrogant and careless, Thor, is cast out of Asgard and sent to live with humans on earth, where he falls in love, finds compassion and understanding within himself, and becomes the defender of humans. But ultimately, he must defend his world of Asgard against the evil Frost Giants."Thor" is an awesome and fun time for the whole family, 13 years and up, depending on maturity level.Well done and kudos to all! FIVE STARS! *****

This review is from: Thor (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) If you want a light-hearted superhero movie, this is great. It's a silly movie that knows it's silly. The characters even tell you so a couple times. Still, sometimes the costumes were a bit too much for me. The soundtrack is awesome, another reason to buy this.* spoiler alert * I really like the "villain." I didn't think he was a villain at all after he explained his highly interesting plot. He basically saved his homeland and should have been regarded as a hero, too. I wish the other characters appreciated him more and that he could have had a happy ending, but of course not, which is why this does not get 5 stars from me.

No Spoiler!!! You will not regret watching this movie. A very well doneplot and execution. The movie is backed by good CGI and performances bythe actors. The only dissatisfaction that i had, was that there wasmore to the movie and it was over looked. More emphasis could have beenlaid on the time THOR spends on earth. Like i've said before, theperformances by the actors has been good with the exception of NataliePortman. I wouldn't say that her performance in the movie is bad butit's just lukewarm. May be because there has been absolutely noimportance given to her character development nor much screen timegiven to her. However, the movie stands out to be a must watch for the story, plot, fights and good performances by most of them.

It was a chance to watch another movie in 3D and what better choicethan a legend action "Thor". It was not disappointing at all, in fact Iloved the cinematography of the stars, galaxies, kingdoms and simpleaction. This for me was the winner and oh yes the very sexy ChrisHemsworth! He is so young but perfect as Thor and Anthony Hopkins ashis father was good too. I am only wondering how he wore the full armorand delivered the lines, he must be real fit at this age. NataliePortman was a delight and when she kissed him, well girl way to go! Itwas a brilliant legend from Marvel Comics and nicely done on bigscreen, I am looking forward to the next one. My favorite scene is Thorhaving coffee and breakfast at the diner. That will suffice for now.

Thor is a bit of a harder sell as far as comic book characters go. Imean, how do you transform an ancient Norse god and 60's comic bookcharacter into something a modern movie going audience is going tolike? Start with great casting (Chris Hemsworth is a dead ringer forThor), add a brilliant screenplay by J. Michael Strazynski, and mix itwith top notch special effects and you end up with a movie that ishalfway believable (in a comic book way) and very entertaining.Thor is an arrogant, perhaps spoiled, young warrior that seeks gloryfor himself and Asgard but nearly reignites an ancient war with theFrost Giants in the process. For his arrogance and poor judgement, Thoris stripped of his power and banished to Earth by Odin (AnthonyHopkins), and his hammer lands in New Mexico and becomes something akinto the sword in the stone of Arthurian legend, "Whoever holds thishammer, should they be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor". All ofthis is a result of the subtle manipulations of Thor's evil brother,Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who seeks power only for himself. Throughout mostof the film Loki works from the shadows to manipulate people and eventstowards an end of his design, as only the trickster god can do. Thormust then work to reclaim his power and stop his brother'smachinations, gaining some wisdom and humility along the way. There is really very little to dislike about the film, other than acouple of minor casting decisions, Hogun, one of the famed warriorsthree, is apparently Asian for some reason, and Heimdall is black. Bothchoices seem odd for Norse gods but it doesn't really harm the movie, they just seem out of place. I would have liked to see Thor get beat upa bit more in the final two fight scenes with The Destroyer and Loki asboth were relatively short and could have benefited from a couple ofextra minutes. Overall Thor is a very fun, very entertaining comic bookmovie that only heightens my anticipation for the upcoming CaptainAmerica and Avengers movies.

"Thor" was another solid foray into the action/adventure genre byMarvel. When I saw the preview for it I was wildly excited. Although Ihave never read the comics, I am a huge fan of Norse mythology. Afterseeing some of the other Marvel action offerings (Iron Man, Iron Man 2)I was not disappointed by "Thor". "Thor" is a fantasy movie with door-busting action and intense fightscenes. It is set in modern times, with a brief back story into thehistory of the Gods, Ice Giants, and mortal humans. It is a story abouta father, Odin, and two sons, Loki and Thor. One son would betray hisfamily and his kingdom for power, the other must face himself and learnhumility in the face of adversity. "Thor" had well choreographed action scenes. The fight scenes are fastpaced, with stunning special effects and interesting weaponry. Theyavoid the pitfall of long, drawn out fight scenes leaving you saying"yeah right" after they are over. You actually believe the fight scenesbecause, well, these people ARE immortal. I also liked the specialeffects involving the kingdom of Asgard. They may be consideredoverwrought by some, but they left me fascinated. The acting in Thor left something to be desired. Anthony Hopkins isalways a solid bet, and did well with his part as the father althoughhe is in a coma most of the movie. Chris Hemsing definitely looked thepart of Thor. The audience, especially the ladies, will probably getmore out of admiring his physique than his acting skill. Even after his"attitude adjustment" he reminds me of the self centered tool thatnobody else can stand. Tom Hiddleston did an excellent job playingLoki. His dark, mysterious and hawk-like visage give you the feelingthat you wouldn't trust him with anything. Natalie Portman's characterwas not developed at all, but was able to establish a relationship withThor leaving a convenient open ending. If you are looking for lots of action and not much thinking thisfeature will provide that. It is a solid bet for a good Saturday nightaction flick with the kids or girlfriend. Chalk up another win byMarvel.

THOR is an epic adventure about Thor, a powerful but arrogant god whosereckless actions trigger a war. As a result, he is stripped of hispowers by his father Odin and banished to Earth where he has to learnwhat it takes to be a good leader.Like Iron Man, one of the reasons for THOR's success is thethree-dimensional and pleasing protagonist that the audience caresabout. Thor is not only a mighty warrior with a powerful physique, butalso a loyal friend. However, as a prince born to inherit the throne,he is petulant. Because of his impetuosity, shortsightedness, flashesof rage and disrespect, his father deprives him of his powers andexiles him to earth in the hope that he will become more humble andmature. Unlike other superheroes who gain their superpowers when bittenby a genetically altered spider or hit by a gamma blast, Thor becomes amortal, like us. Owing to the loss of powers and a beauty's love, hisheart is softened. Despite the flaw that Thor's personal growth, i.e.the learning of humility, and his interest in Jane Foster areunderdeveloped, Thor is still a charismatic character whom the audienceaspires to be.What makes this movie so relatable to me is the breakdown of thefamily. Speaking of family, Thor is no different from us. He also hasto deal with family issues, e.g. sibling rivalry for power andattention, a son's impatience to prove his worth to his father, Loki'shatred for his father, etc. That the pursuit of power pollutes ourminds sounds plausible. Several scenes showing the confrontationsbetween the father and the son are emotionally affecting, thanks toAnthony Hopkins, an acting legend, whose nuanced performance as anaging king and a distressed father who is hurt and disappointed by hisson is very convincing. The delicately crafted Marvel universe sets the scene for this epicadventure. Earth, Asgard and Jotunheim are beautifully shot and theirunique features are highlighted. For instance, Thor's stay in remoteNew Mexico symbolizes the fall of the god. While his arrogance andpassion are highlighted in his glowing golden world, his unequaledcourage contrasts sharply with the scary snowy world. Thanks to thejaw-dropping IMAX 3D images, the convincing set design and the coolcostume design, the three distinctly different worlds are brought tolife within the same reality. What's more, that science cannot explaineverything and Norse mythology is real adds romance to the story.Albeit not on a par with Spiderman, THOR is a success as a commercialpopcorn movie blending together different genres, mythology, action, acharacter study, romance, family drama, etc.P.S. Make sure you stick around till after the closing credits!

D+ I'm not much of a Thor fan to begin with, but I was not against theproject and was rather intrigued by it. The casting choices seemed veryspot on, myself being particularly excited by the presence of AnthonyHopkins and Natalie Portman. Kudos to Idris Elba as well. However, thefilm opens with the annoying character played by Kat Dennings. Not onlythat but Portman's character was one I was completely unable to connectwith. Then we go to Asgard and the visuals as expected are stunning. The lighting and wide range of colors was well done and all aroundbeautiful. The mythology was very engaging and the choice of TomHiddleston as Loki was a damn good one. The elite "Warriors Three" lookgreat from a distance but do little to nothing in the movie. There isnot a single reason for me to go into them what so ever due to theirlack of screen time and the fact that the majority of the time theywere on screen the director treated them as over-redundant comicrelief. The Ice Giants were very imposing and served well asantagonists. The battle with them was one of the film's few savinggraces. Then Thor is banished to our realm, Earth, and so begins the painfulmidsection of the film. And this I mind you is the longest section ofthe movie. The dialogue is corny and the script struggles to find anybit of memorable dialogue and character development. For the longesttime I forgot I was watching a superhero flick and instead a badlystaged comedy/sitcom. The director refused to take the materialseriously at all, even as far as having S.H.I.E.L.D. agents poke fun atthe Asgardian warriors as they stroll down the street and then smotherthe window of a restaurant like lost dogs. And the vast majority of thehumor wasn't funny sadly. This wasn't "Iron Man" with its smart andquippy dialogue, this was so cliché it hurt to watch. Denning'scharacter comment s on how hot Thor is, a predictable and very cornyromance starts that just grated on my nerves throughout. None of theprotagonists seem to take their roles seriously, which would be okay ifthis were a straight comedy. The villains are menacing enough but don'tget enough screen time. I know I keep comparing it to the Iron Manfilms, but the way the comedy and action are spliced together onlyshows how badly director Kenneth Branagh tried to make a sh*t-stainedcopy of those films. I found myself yawning more than anything.Destroyer was awesome in my opinion, making even further jokes out ofthe "Warriors three" without a fight at all. By the time Thor gets hishammer back I was beyond bored, and in usual Marvel fashion the writerstry to throw a curve ball concerning the main villain and it's a decentone I'll admit but the end battle is too short to be breath-taking. Inshort there are a few colorful shots and nice monsters, but this isoutweighed by corny dialogue, cheesy humor and story development thatredefine boredom. I cannot recommend this my fellow fans.

I've never really cared for Thor. He's never been one of my favoritesuperheroes and I've never picked up one of his comic books, but likethe Iron Man film, I was able to go in and still be able to enjoy amovie about a superhero I've never had any real exposure to. Don't getme wrong though, I don't think the film is very special at all. Infact, I think it's quite redundant and forgettable, but it kept mepretty entertained for a boring night and I look forward to Thor'sappearance in The Avengers. The action scenes were decent enough, and Iliked that there weren't too many of them. The film takes some time outto develop the characters to a certain limit, and it wassemi-entertaining seeing Thor interact with normal pedestrians. Thesewere my absolute favorite parts of the film; just seeing Thor walkaround in public and seeing the way people react to him. I thought theentire film would take place in Asgard, which wouldn't have been bad,but those portions of the film just weren't very engrossing to me. TheEarth scenes had more weight and appeal to them. The writing was pretty standard for a comic book film, nothingremarkable or original. The relationship between Thor and Jane soundedinteresting on paper, but it wasn't very interesting in the actualnarrative. Natalie Portman played her role fine, but she didn't goabove and beyond it like I expected from an Oscar winner. ChrisHemsworth was pretty campy as Thor at times, but he handled the comedicportions very well, it's just the way he handled the dramatic portions, which I had mixed opinions about. The visuals were well done, butwithout strong writing, I wasn't able to be absorbed into Thor's worldlike I expected. Tom Hiddleston gave the most interesting performancein the film and was definitely the highlight. It was also nice to seeAnthony Hopkins and Idris Elba, although their talents weren't verywell utilized. I wish Thor was given more locations to go through onEarth since most of the film had him walking around a bland lookingsmall town, but since he was almost always with Jane and a few otherhuman characters, I suppose that limited where he want.Like in the finale of Iron Man, the final fight between the hero andthe villain felt anti-climatic and wasn't as epic and satisfying as itcould've been, but I guess my expectations were just too high afterwatching X-Men: First Class. There's also an ending after the credits, which was actually a lot better than I thought it would be. Overall, this was very underwhelming, but I think the sequel could be somethingspecial in the right hands and with a better writer. Until then, bringon "The Avengers".
Big Unit (14 May 2012)
Thor works on so many levels. It meets its toughest challenge and thatis to make its super powerful blond godlike lead character relatableand spark a connection to the audience. For all the action extravaganceand adventure, a surprising and pleasant amount of time is devoted tocharacter establishment and development. This certainly isn't some wildvideo game popcorn flick. It also packs the perfect amount of comedy, with most of the jokes at Thor's expense. Cutting a god down to size,is important for two reasons. One, the story itself is about Thorlearning humility and two, it makes the character more believable andmore relatable. It's what Marvel does best, give us heroes with flaws.A lot of this film takes place in the modern era on contemporary Earthand that was absolutely the right way to present the film. That's notto say that there aren't fantastical element, Asgard is breathtakingand incredible. Still, they manage to be dramatic and serious most ofthe time but balance it with a sense of humor. Thor finds the right mixsimilar to the way Iron Man did back in 2008. The film never becomestoo self-important or portentous but still is dramatic and fun. Themost fun outside of the incredible action sequences is when theconsequences of the culture clash is played up. That is something tosavor and enjoy. The fish-out-of-water angle is played up perfectly. They take a "hero" or wannabe hero who is arrogant by temperament andused to having his own way and place him in a position where he has togrow. All the while using comic friction as a great tool to advance theplot and the development. Thor tries to continue to live his ownreality because in his mind, he's still prince of Asgard. It's both funand interesting to watch him come to grips with his situation. As he ishumbled and out of place, audiences enjoy recognizing his human traits.Sure, viewers are thrilled by his powers, but we relate to his emotionsand his flaws. Add some intense sibling rivalry, great action andromantic entanglements and Thor may just be the best movie of thesummer.

This movie was a movie i wasn't very exited to see, and Im 13 myself.Iwas fearful of a sloppy job in special effects and the possibility of apoor script. Some people thought that it was these things. I think theycould of done better on most but i think it was an adequate job ofportraying the comic book on the big screen. But truth be told I don'tthink, by comment of some of my buddies that they told the correctstory of Thor. As in the comic book didn't fit the story of the movie. But I really liked how they linked all the marvel movies that were partof the movies together. During Iron man to that S.E.I.L.D agent had toleave for important business in new Mexico, that was the Thor problem, also at the end of Iron man 2, tony stark was proposed to the avengersteam. At the end of the incredible hulk, tony stark asks hulk if hewants to be apart of the avengers team and i haven't yet seen CaptinAmerica. but all in all I think this movie is really meant for childrenand Adults who don't see many movies.

This review is from: Thor (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) The advent of the all in one combo pack is fantastic especially if one has multiple devices which we do; 3D system, non 3D blu ray setup, vehicle DVD player and ipad/iphones.The movie itself was pretty slick for 3D, the story line left quite a bit to be desired imo, very predictable but hey, it's Marvel right?! I give it a 4 out of 5 overall because I gave it high marks for product and video/sound quality but deducted for the story but really, that's being honest but a bit nitpicky.

This is no batman or superman or ironman but their is a lot of things to like about thor. this film starts out with thor being cast out of his home asgard and winds up on earth. i will not give away to much of the plot but one must keep in mind that thor is done by the sane team that brought ironman to the screen and it is clear that they use the ironman formula in this movie. It works to some degree but fails at other points. If you do not expect a huge epic master piece then thor is a great movie. don't miss it.

Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, is banished to Earth when he defies hisfather Odin and makes war on the Frost Giants of Jotunheim. Abandoned, alone and stripped of his power, he is befriended by Jane Foster, anastrophysicist. Can he redeem himself, get back home and prevent atreacherous plan to usurp Odin's rule ?Branagh is oddly the correct choice to adapt Marvel Comics' Norsesuperhero to the screen - his flamboyant visual flair and Shakespeareanbackground turn it into an intergalactic King Lear, and he plays itadmirably straight. For all its dazzling backdrops and crazy fights,it's really just a simple story of a young man learning humility andresponsibility, and age-old family problems. What makes it veryenjoyable for me is the cast, particularly Hemsworth in the lead - helooks the business, has a big time movie star swagger which belies hisinexperience, is funny and sweet, and paces the character brilliantly. He starts off as a noisy, bombastic twit, but gradually matures into areal hero, touchingly encapsulated by the scene where he faces theDestroyer alone for his friends' sake despite the fact he knows hecannot win. Hiddleston, Hopkins and Skarsgård (whose Scandinavianorigins add a strange authenticity) are all great in support as thesneaky brother, troubled Dad and a nice guy scientist respectively, andElba is terrific as Heimdall the watchful gatekeeper, who is in equalparts noble, amusing and cunning. The women don't fare as well -Portman doesn't have much to do except giggle at Hemsworth, andAlexander as warrior Sif doesn't really get to strut her stuff. Thevisual effects, especially the realisation of Asgard, are first-ratethroughout; there's an eye-popping ice-caves battle at the start, thefaceless Destroyer is a terrific robot monster (although it does remindme of Gort from The Day The Earth Stood Still), and the Bifrost Bridge, which the Gods use to literally shoot themselves around the universe,is fantastic. There's also great production design by Bo Welch and anice overblown score by Patrick Doyle, both of which create a suitablyepic feel - I saw this on the largest screen in my local cineplex andthe big experience really adds to the movie's sweep. The only downsidefor me is the story editing, which constantly flips back and forthbetween Asgard and Earth. I guess this is necessary for the plottingand intrigue, but for me it breaks up the tone too much; as soon asThor and Jane start developing their friendship we're back in Asgardfor more special effects, and it keeps cross-cutting throughout. Iwould have much preferred an hour on Earth bookended by sequences inAsgard. Minor gripes aside though, this is great head-bashing familycomic book entertainment, with plenty of action (the second unitdirector was talented veteran stuntman/filmmaker Vic Armstrong) and agreat Star Turn by Hemsworth, whose infectious grin alone is worthcatching it for. Trivia - the uber-secret government agency Shield whobust up the party also appear in Marvel's recent Iron Man series offilms (with Gregg here reprising his role as the cynical operativeCoulson). Based on the 1962 comic by Stan Lee, Larry Leiber and JackKirby; Lee also has a funny walk-on as the unfortunate pick-up drivertrying unsuccessfully to pull Thor's mighty hammer Mjolnir out of theground.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Each frame is packed with eitheraction, emotion, drama or intensity. I was expecting to simply seecrazy mythology with monsters destroying the landscape for two hourslike maybe Clash of the Titans. Instead, I was shocked at the depth andcomplexity of this amazing film. You definitely need your brain andyour heart turned on for this one, unlike certain CGI mishmashes. Ifyou want a movie with just dumb action and no plot then stay away fromthis exceptional film. The performances are top tier and the visualeffects may be the best I've seen in years if not ever. I have to jointhe majority of people and even critics that are praising this film. It's a true joy and such a pleasant surprise.

This year is turning out to be a powerhouse of Marvel comic movies.Starting with the Green Hornet in January, then most recently Thor,Priest; X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern in June and then CaptainAmerica and Cowboys and Aliens in July. My first review from thissummer popcorn movie bunch is "Thor" adapted from the Marvel comic andbased off of the old Norse hammer wielding god of Thunder. This moviedoesn't fail to deliver to the fans a rough and tumble action packedand visually outstanding movie that can be placed right up there with"Iron Man". It also gives a surprisingly good lesson about the Norsegods and goddesses of myth and legend. The movie is set around Thor god of thunder, played by Chris Hemsworth(Star Trek) and as you get to know him you find out that he's reallyfull of himself and thinks that he doesn't have to listen to hisfather, Odin, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) kingof Asgard, Thor's home in the heavens. When Thor disobeys his father'swishes and travels to the realm of Joturheim, home of the Frost Giants, where he destroys the giant's home land into a pile of rubble. Due tohis disobedience, Odin takes away Thor's power and banishes him toEarth in order to learn how to be rational and selfless before he canreturn to his home. While on Earth he encounters and a young andbeautiful scientist named, Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman(Black Swan).Back on Asgard, Oden, due to stress of an inevitable war against thefrost giants, no thanks to Thor of course, falls under "Oden's Sleep"(or a coma in layman's terms). His youngest son, Loki, god of mischief, played by Tom Hiddleston (Archipeligo) is crowned as king and then asthe film progresses the audience discovers that he is planning adevilish and sly plan that would end up destroying Asgard forever. After discovering this Thor must discover what it means to be a truehero in order to regain his power and stop Loki from destroying thevery home that he was banished from.I was pleasantly surprised and pleased at how the film's director,Kenneth Branagh (Henry V) distinguishes the three realms; Earth, Asgardand Joturherm with dialogue, lighting, mood and visuals. Branagh iswell experienced in the feel of Shakespearian atmosphere like hismovies, Henry V and Hamlet. It was great to watch and listen to theformal and complementary dialogue this is delivered by Odin and theother gods of Asgard. I felt those scenes could work on stage. With theother two worlds: Jotunherm is very cold, isolated, dark and eerie andEarth is as contemporary, new and modern. All of these descriptions arecreated by the visuals, lines and their delivery. The only problem I really had with the movie was that Natalie Portman'scharacter was really underused and only seemed to serve the purpose ofthe hot and lonely love interest. Also, once Thor is on earth, it'sbasically a "fish out of water" story for those scenes that demonstrateawkward fitting in moments and unfamiliar sayings. I also believe thatthe film could do without the slow-mo shots of Hemsworth walking intoshots. I know that it's supposed to emphasize that he's this gorgeousman with rippling muscles and chiseled body. The audience and I alreadygot those hints without the slow-mo shots. It just simply wasn'tnecessary, but I'm sure that horny teenage girls would stronglydisagree with me on that notion. This movie starts the year off with a BANG! It kicks the popcorn moviecraze into high gear for 2011 as it will hopefully lead to even moresuccessful comic book hero movies. If you are looking to have a greatweekend, then go check out Thor. You won't be disappointed! I give thismovie three and a half out of four popcorn bags.
