I had high expectations for an Adrian Lyne film - how disappointing! The dialog is difficult to hear, as the soundtrack is SO loud and the actors all mumble their lines. There is zero chemistry between Diane Lane and the actor that plays her lover. This film is very slow and about 45 minutes longer than it needs to be. A lot of graphic sex scenes doesn't make a movie sexy and we just couldn't wait for it to be over. Overall, very, very boring.

oh, save yourself! Skip this one. This is not a murder mystery or thriller...or anything, for that matter...this is about a loser woman who hates her life and decides to have an affair (oh wait, Diane Lane always plays this type of role)...I won't give it away in case you do decide to torture your eyes by watching this garbage, but the story makes no sense...no accountability whatsover, and there's absolutely NO PLOT and NO character development...oh brother, don't bother with this one...DL is so overrated, I have no idea why she was nominated, let alone, won an award...and this movie was waaaay toooo long!!! If I could give in a F-minus, I would...

I agree that the performances of all the actors was fascinatinglysuperior, but at the end I was left with some serious questions. Thewriter and director seemed to overlook the fact that the ENTIREresponsibility for the tragic ending was the fault of the wife. PaulMartel (the young lover) was never to blame -- he was obviously 10 orso years younger than the wife -- and he was COMPLETELY FREE to indulgein one or two or three affairs because he was separated from his wife(we are told he was married in a very sly manner). All responsibilityfor Paul's death lies with the unfaithful wife -- she was bored withher suburban home, bored with her life with her husband and child, andshe embarked on an obsessive affair through her own volition. However, the film never seems to emphasize her responsibility, her outrageousguilt -- she is NOT a heroine, free to continue her life as before, buther actions brought about the death of a beautiful man. This is NOTmade clear at the end. The ending (parked in front of a Police Station)hints (barely) at possible retribution, but this was weakly done. Thegeneral feeling seemed to be "well, the husband and the wife escapedpunishment and all would be well!" This should NOT have been.

Graphic sex may be what's attracting audiences to Unfaithful, but gripping performances by Lane and Gere are what will keep them awake.

Diane Lane looks gorgeous and acts brilliantly in this entirely predictable and formulaic remake of Chabrol's "La Femme Infidele", predictable that is, even if you do not know the original. An unfaithful wife, so guess what the husband is like...correct, that's just what he's like. Guess what sort of lover she goes with...yes, that's him to a T. And so on, except for the very end, which will keep you guessing, even after you have seen it. But never mind, it also kept the producers guessing, because they came up with two endings, both of which can be seen on the DVD.Although the events of the story are no surprise, the way in which they happen is totally implausible. I cannot give details, because spoilers are against my religion. I will just recommend that you have your incredulity fast asleep and safely tucked up in bed before you watch this movie. And why would you watch it? Diane Lane, that's why. She was deservedly Oscar-nominated for this performance and if there had been a category for best legs in a leading role she would have won it. Watch out for the scene in the subway, where she recalls her first illicit liaison. A great performance, and with a sharper and more imaginative script, this could have been a great movie.

I should say something to try explain how this film can captivate our thoughts even after the end and year after year...Two things must be hightlighted: remarkable performance of Diane Lane and exceptional direction of Adrian Lyne that creates an environment were the long silence sequences brought us the pure art of acting. This film gaves Diane Lane the chance to prove that she should be in the Hollywood 'A 'List as a leading actress a long time ago.

This film is mindful of two other dramatic films recently: "The DeepEnd" and "In the Bedroom." In these three movies there is amurder or accidental death and its impact on what seemed to be asolid, well-established marriage. What is demonstrated is the universal truth of the fragility ofrelationships, even when there is a seeming calm and stability onthe surface. Marriage requires fidelity, security and commitment, and few adults are capable on it in any sustained way. Each of us is lured by the prospect of adventure and risk-taking,especially if there is the promise of sexual fulfillment and thefantasy of secrets being kept. The movie shows the difficulties ofliving a lie and a double life. Most often, the result of unfaithfulness is disastrous. The acting is superb, especially that of Diane Lane. Richard Gere, though more passive, soft-spoken and laid back, is the perfect foil. The psychological truth is revealed that these seeming quiet andrestrained people can explode, given great provocation. The moral of the movie is that the risk of an affair is hardly worththe trouble, but there are many such movies, plays and novels andpeople take the risk anyway. We wonder why, each in his or herown way.The movie is nothing if not provocative and stimulating. And thereis no gratuitous sex or violence.

This review is from: Unfaithful (Full Screen Edition) (DVD) I am disappointed that Diane Lane would make such a movie. The sex scenes were unsettling. There was no tenderness. It was like watching an assault. I would be ashamed to have this on my shelf, so I put it where it belongs--in the garbage.

A suburban housewife(who is dressed as plain jane but wears hooker shoes) meets French book dealer(who sounds like he just came from Mexico). She is bored with her nice but dull Richard Gere and I guess the other guy is much more irresistible because he is "French" and wears a scarf. They start a steamy sexual affair and carry on without a care in the world. Nice husband eventually gets suspicious about why his wife doesn?t want to get it on anymore and hires a private investigator. In the meantime, our little wifey obviously thinks that the ?French? stud is faithful to her and is shocked to find out that he is definitely a gigolo. Husband, upon finding out that his darling is having an affair, goes to her lover?s apartment and brazenly declares ?I?m her husband?. To which the lover boy says?Oh, ok, you want a drink?? After having a drink, Richard Gere gets enraged(which I thought was the most pathetic acting I?ve seen in a long time) and kills the other guy. Then, he does a few other stupid things ?like tries to drag the dead body out the apartment, apparently not worrying if anybody sees him and rides around with it for a while before dumping it . Eventually, he has to tell his lying cheating wife that he killed her lover and I guess he has to turn himself in. Movie ends on this note, where the wife is begging him not to do it and they could just disappear to Mexico(visit the boyfriend?s relatives perhaps?). This was supposed to be a drama but I was laughing through the whole time.

This film deals with infedility and takes it to another level. The ending is pretty silly considering what lead to that point, however it is a very good film.Diane Lane is captivating. The scene where she's on her way home on the train and thoughts run through her head is incredible. The range of emotions she shows in those few minutes are unbelieveable. That is truly one of the all-time classic, non-verbal scenes in hollywood.Richard Gere is alright. But it is definitely Diane Lane who makes this movie.

The film drags and drags between forgettable sex and scenes of Richard Gere getting suspicious.

I find this movie haunting - in that I continually think about what myreactions would be in the husband's place. Diane Lane's performance isperfect - with facial expressions wonderfully conveying thoughtswithout dialogue. What is less convincing is the husband's preparednessto continue the marriage in the face of total betrayal - especially inview of the retribution exacted on the Lover (also a bit unconvincingwith regard to the cover up attempt) Adrian Lyne's film is so muchbetter than the original French, "La Femme Infidèle" - which suffersfrom the same problems, stated above, but with that version there is noinformation on the actual infidelity.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to see this, but the reviews I read were allreally raving about it. So, I went, and I'm so pleased I did. This has tobeone of the best films this years and one of the best thrillers ever. It'sintense, it's haunting, it's subtle, yet it's also soooo cool, sexy andentertaining. Diane Lane shines in her starring role in this. She carriesthe movie so well, and I'm thrilled that she has at last become a star. It'sa great performance that should win her an Academy Award. The acting byRichard Gere and Olivier Martinez (wow! is he a hottie) are also nearperfect. The plot is well served by Adrian Lyne's hypnotic direction. Firstclass movie-making. 10 out of 10.

This is by no means a 5 star movie. I'd actually give it 2.5 stars, if it were possible. Right from the start you basically can see how it's all going to end. I felt as though the director tried to cover up the weak predictable script by making every scene overly-dramtic with pounding music and flashy camera moves. The acting however, made up for the predictable story. Diane Lane is by far the best thing about this movie. She did give a great performance, as a selfish immature mother, although it is not Oscar worthy. The other characters were cliched, and the French guy with whom Diane's character has the affair, is downright annoying. All in all, this is a slightly entertaining movie worth watching when you have nothing better to watch.

My wife wanted to watch this...now I know why. The name of the movie prettymuch gives away the plot so very little needs to be said about it. Wife(Diane Lane) is bored and cheats on hubby (Richard Gere) with some youngfrench guy that you can barely understand. Nuff said.I found this to be incredibly slow. Most of the scenes are way to long andsoporific at best. The characters have next to no chemistry and there isvery little about them that will cause you to be even slightly interested inthem or what they are going through. "Fans" of Diane Lane may findsomething to entertain them but that is about all I can think of in regardsto this movie.

Even if you didn't know Lyne directed Fatal Attraction, you would sit through this always-solemn movie fearing the outcome.
(16 May 2012)
Why did it take the director of this movie so long to get the point across that an extra-martial affair hurts everyone involved and in the case of this movie can lead to a violent death. Half of the scenes in this movie could have been left out and the point still would have come across that no good can come of an encounter with a stanger on a windy day. I didn't need a whole movie to figure that out. This is the kind of movie to watch if you have an afternoon to waste.

This film was well made and it had some powerful scenes. In fact, theopening scenes totally set up the family - you know Gere, Lane and their sonand their "idyllic" life. Lyne knows how to shoot a scene but he can nevershake his old "commercial" sensibilities. The windstorm looked so fake, socreated it was almost comical and I lived in Lower Manhattan for years andthey CAN happen, when a storm comes in off the Hudson and the way thehigh-rises create these wind tunnels - the wind can get THAT strong, but itjust went on and on and Lyne adds steam so much because he likes the LOOK.But the "look" starts to distract from the story. *******SPOILERS HERE ONIN**********SPOILERS*******:There were some nice twists and turns and actually when Gere goes to theapt. to confront the lover and starts feeling sick and his vision getsblurry, at first I thought maybe the lover had poisoned Gere's drink (whichi thought would have been a nice trick) but for Gere to be feeling "sick"and then attack him the way he did - I don't know. The movie seemed to fallapart after that. I mean, could Lyne have made a landfill look more elegantand dramatic and nicely lit?? Please. I will give Lane credit though - shegives a marvelous performance and I have never been a fan of her acting. So- there are peaks and valleys in this film and I like that it ended up beinga morality play - could one go on with their life knowing what they did? Inmany ways, Changing Lanes asked the same thing and I give Hollywood creditfor even making movies that ask such adult questions - I just wish themovies had turned out better.

This movie is well done. The only character I didn't care for was the husband.

Another reviewer wrote "tedious and unbelivable" and that nails it. For those who don't get it, Diane Lane has a perfect marriage to Richard Gere. She throws it all away, over and over, with a French kid--for no other reason than a little excitement. (Actually, this is the most plausible part of the story).Through a series of completely implausible events, hubby finds out and bops Mr. Right with a blunt instrument--causing him to bleed as if he had been cut up with a chain saw. Richard leaves plenty of evidence at the scene but nothing ever comes of it. He then finds a car wash that's open at night during a rain storm. Richard and Diane lie--unbelivably badly--to the cops who are so stupid they never figure it out. Finally, they call a truce. Diane: Adultries: 1; Murders: 0. Richard comes in at: Adultries: 0; Murders: 1. So its a tie and I presume they live happily ever after. Did I mention that all this is tedious...and drawn out...you can feel the "stretching" with those corny flashbacks. I only wish they would have some accordion playing when Diane is with the French guy.I adore Diane Lane but this is the worst kind of soap opera--not some thought provoking social commentary.
