Even though I jest somewhat by using the famous Monty Python opener tostart this review, Valhalla Rising really is . . . different and thensome.Without question the cinema photography and audio tracks merge togetherto form an experiential tone poem that's difficult to describe exactly, but very compelling.Beautiful and terrifying, brutal and spiritual, iconic and barbaric . .. all of these seemingly unlikely dichotomies and more are woventogether into this tapestry that takes the viewer back to 1000 AD, atime when essentially all of Europe was cloaked in the morass of theDark Ages, and in the northern yonderlands, life was as harsh as canpossibly be imagined. And yet out of this maelstrom of harsh realities, where sanity itselfis but a wispy hint of potential behaviors comes what could beinterpreted as a deep probing into the very concept of existence, consciousness and the soul, compressed together into a manifold ofperpetual adrenalin infused danger and lurking potential direconsequences of the worst imaginable sort.I won't spoil this by providing a clue to the ending, of course, but inthat ending there is yet another layer of profound contemplation thatthe film invites the viewer to ponder, if so inclined. There is one scene in the latter part of the film, though, which isstill a bit mysterious. The Viking clansmen, along with "One Eye" passaround a clay jug of "something", followed by what could only bedescribed as various episodes of hallucinogen catalyzed behaviors. Myguess is that this was a jug filled with a tea of sorts, imbued withhallucinogenic mushrooms, an activity that was surprisingly common invarious ceremonies of that time and culture. They had arrived in this mysterious and foreboding new location, andthis was the ceremony . . . the bonding of spirit and place in this"new world" as it were.It could be easy for some, I suppose, to simply dismiss this work assome sort of odd, violence prone dark adventure saga . . . but there isso much more to be experienced here, if one chooses to probe the layersof context and symbolism woven together in this piece. In terms of originality of concept, style, and delivery, this is a workof art in the true sense of the term, albeit disturbing in many ways, but an art piece to be absorbed and contemplated for future reference.I give the directors and writers of this work a lot of credit forstepping more than a bit outside the box, and allowing the actors tolive out their characters probably as well as could be possibly donefor this type of a film.I like this film . . . very compelling to watch and experience, but itmay not be for everyone. Having said that, in the proverbial 1 - 10scale, I'll place this in the 7.5 to 8 range. If you can be open to"something completely different" as it were, you won't be disappointed.

When I looked at the poster for this movie I just knew it was a mustsee for me. I knew there was going to be some intense battle scenes, blood and all the guts I could stand. There was blood and guts just notto the extent that I was expecting. This movie was about a journey notjust fighting to the death. It struck me that there was not to muchtalking but more of a visual journey to be taken with One Eye. Thesectioning of the movie helped to keep the movie moving with the lackof talking thru the movie which helped me because for a while I wasconfused on what direction the movie was going. All and all I enjoyedthe movie because it gave me the opportunity to project the feelings Iwanted to on One Eye as to where he was going and what he wanted out ofhis journey.

This is a film one loves or hates...there will be no gray area for it. Tremendous fight scenes, done in real time. Beautifully photograph backgrounds of moors and forest. A viking middle ages art film.

Wow! This movie is not for the squeamish. But it's truly an amazing journey into the darker side of human nature, offset by gameness and loyalty. If you can imagine "Once Upon a Time in the West" somehow synthesized with "The Passion of the Christ," then you are close to imagining what this head-trip called "Valhalla Rising" is about. It's dark, raw and violent, yet at the same time beautifully poetic.

While looking for a new, unseen action movie i came across this film.Expecting to watch a action packed movie full of gore and epic battles,it turned out to be something so much different but also so much morethen just eye candy. The settings are astonishing and the acting isgreat. The movie has little words in it, but it doesn't need it. Thewhole vibe of the story and the scenes you are sucked in to, plays withyour feelings and mind. After having watched this film, i feelsatisfied and understanding of the main character. Do not watch thisfilm if you are expecting a Hollywood blockbuster action movie. However, i strongly suggest this film if you like movies which make youthink about life!

An invigorating, mystical and very bloody look at human nature. One-Eye, a mute fighting champion who is kept locked in a cage by his Pagan captors, escapes and runs into a group of early christian, witch-burning crusaders who are about to embark on a journey to the holy lands to build a new jerusalem. Their contempt for non-christians drives them and they stand firm by their beleifs. One-Eye's captors also stand hard by their own pre-christian beliefs, which doesn't really get them very far - they spend their time pitting men against one another in pointless fighting to the death. Upon his escape a small boy follows One-Eye and the Crusaders into their longship and an eerie, timeless Ocean voyage wherein they are becalmed in an all enveloping fog and slowly, one by one they begin to lose their powers of reasoning. But this is only half the journey, the ship is carried inland up a river and the half-dead group find themselves alone in a strange and apparently empty land..You have to read between the lines here, Valhalla Rising is no ordinary film about Vikings. The films most telling moments are in its silences and sweeping photography, pitting the handful of warriors against an empty land and against, ultimately, themselves. Only the amorality of the captivating Mikkelson is left unscathed as he decides what is to be his own fate. His axe cuts through the ignorant dogma of the crusaders or the greed of the warriors, gambling upon his fighting abilities in the films opening sequences. What gives anyone the right to claim somewhere as their own? to impose their will upon another culture? Western imperialism in the 9th Century or just territorial squabbling from ignorant barbarians? What really drives the film is the fact that although it poses many questions, offers many solutions and even comments on itself - there is never a moment when it offers up deciding arguments or solutions to anything and its characters are left to work it out for themselves. If you were looking for a straight up action film this will disappoint you, for it isn't an action film. Hypnotic and dreamlike in the manner of Aguirre the Wrath of God or The Thin Red Line, brutal and bloody in the manner of more recent films such as Ironclad or Beowulf and Grendel but on a different level entirely. Director Refn has created an intellectual, unflinching and raw examination of the dark parts of the human animal (as he did in the equally stunning Bronson and his earlier Pusher sequence of films) which has been confounding people since its release. Even the trailer seems to be struggling for a way of describing what lays within and has opted for the easy, action film route.

The best part of this film was casting mads mikkelsen as the lead. other than that, I wasn't impressed. this film is slow & quite. I could've also liked the movie more if it wasn't for the ending.SPOILER!(he dies) I believe movies are only allowed to kill the lead role in good movies which this wasn't but if he would have lived somehow, I would have felt a lot better. Because the movie is so dark, killing him made me more depressed. This is a no hope movie.

Keep away. I was enticed with the notion of a viking movie. The maincharacter is mute, so already you can see how much dialog will bethrough out the movie... it seems as if scene after scene tries so hardto immerse the viewer in the scene, that it just ends up been a quietlandscape vignette aside from a few great fight scenes. You end upgoing through scene to scene knowing whats going on but left wonderingwhy and whats the purpose of this story? In the end, I had to look upon movie database the purpose for the entire film - I understood whathappened, I just was so lost as to the intent or purpose. Pretty much alandscape video with Irish accents on an unknown island to island withnatives you don't recognize either.

One word Agonizing, I was looking forward to an off the beaten roadtype of historical flick, a fresh look into the subject. It seems toattempt to be " a piece of art" rather than a film, and i understandwhat they were trying to achieve with it. However it is so painfullyboring, frustrating, pretentious, devoid of any real emotion, anddownright annoying. I get the faint feeling that a Film like this istruly insulting my intelligence on some distant personal level. thereare artistic films that can cleverly dispense with dialogue and leavemuch for you to work out on your own, but they have to be engagingenough to stimulate profound emotional feelings in a viewer. Then thereare films that seem to to have no real artistic merit but claim to beworks of art be virtue of using this so called "artfull" cinematicformula. this is one is the latter. This same film could have beenachieved with a series of still images in 5 minutes, and even then itwould be mediocre at best. I would have gotten a better experiencestaring nonstop into a painting on a wall for 90 minutes, because thatsbasically all there is here, long shots of people staring at each otherfor no apparent reason whatsoever. what a waste.

I was quite excited by the look of this film as I do think properViking based films are difficult to come by. Unfortunately this is notIt, after seeing the DVD case which depicts (in Britain any way)"One-Eye" standing holding a sword covered in blood and tattoos withhundreds of warriors behind him in a shield wall of sorts, this is myfirst complaint, this never happens, it gave the impression of being anEpic with a climactic battle at some point. Next complaint, the mainCharacter never speaks. This can work to great effect in some films,The Dollars trilogy for instance "Blondie" hardly says anything butmost films like that have a good story and development not a series ofmoody shots of scenery. Thirdly where are they supposed to be in thebeginning? If this is in Denmark or Sweden then they should hit Englandbefore America, if it is Norway then you are still more likely to getto England, Greenland or Iceland first and if this is Scotland orEngland, why the hell are the people called Vikings? (the Vikings hadbeen driven out of England by 954 AD, this film being set in 1000 AD Ibelieve). This brings me onto why are they referred to as Vikings atall? Vikings were Pagan Raiders that attacked coastal villages, theusual term for non-raider being Danes, Pagans or Norsemen. In additionto this why is the "great Viking vessel" a boat no bigger than a rubberdinghy manned by about 8 people? History rant over...There is practically no dialogue, no explanation, no characterdevelopment and barely any plot. It seems that this is what pretentiousarty types want however so if you like fine art and pretentious crap,go ahead but otherwise it's an hour and a half you'll never see again.

Story = D, Characters = C, Setting = C, Cinematography = B+,Entertainment = FAs maybe an average+ movie fan, I'm open to movies taking chances andrisks as long as it produces something with a little substance. Well,to be fair, Valhalla Rising does produce little substance...verylittle. Check the summary and other reviews for the very few particulardetails there are for this movie. MY review is for its "watchability"and entertainment value for the average movie goer. Unless you are really, REALLY into artsy movies where artistry is thegoal and not into being entertained by a story movies often tell, don'twaste your time, even on DVD with this one.I love period pieces. Love a good Viking. Exploration. Fighting, mystery, symbology and philosophy. But I did not love this movie. Ithink those who are in the movie review business will like this muchmore than the movie goer. Those in the biz probably see Sooooo manymovies that they grow tired and weary of the formulas and thereforwelcome more the unusual movies that come out (as long as they are wellmade). As others mentioned, it is very slow, dark, bleak, boring, with someviolent fight scenes. Very little dialogue, little to no informationdelivered by the characters as to what/why/when/where and who. It hassome slow motion/dream/drug state moments and visions and tops off witha ridiculous ending. The character development is almost non-existent. The main character"one eye" does NOT posses "super natural ability" that the summary andothers mention. Did we watch the same movie? He's a good fighter but sowas Russell Crow in Gladiator - no super powers yet they did similarthings. One eye's glare (he's mute) does not transcend words. Hedoesn't even gesture to communicate. Really the only person I like inthis movie was the boy "Are" probably 'cause he talks and mad a funnywhen he gave one-eye his official name.I gave this a "2" because I went to Scotland, walked some of the samecountry side and so I enjoyed seeing the filming location which helpedme get into the beginning of this movie. Once in, I was obligated tofinish it. But for you.... avoid this. Save time and Money. Seriously.

Ok I haven't seen it yet! but hey I am willing to bet this is the bloodest film of the summer. some of my friends are freaked out by the trailer. I've one word "BRONSON" now that is freaked out!

When I left the theatre a song came into my head. It was Dylan's Chimesof Freedom as sung by The Byrds. An aestetic triumph for danish, together with Trier and Dreyer, infant terrible Nicolas Refn the filmrevolves around themes he worked with since his debut. Different inform than Pusher and Bleeder if yet relying on comic book aestetics inthe cinematography once again Refn comes about thought provoking. Whilethis film is Refn's most direct approach to the theme of existentialconditions in contemporary society it is also visionally at his mostimpressive. Visually it has been compared to Herzog but where as Herzoghas a semi-documental style this is much more like reading a RichardCorben story. The hypnotic drone/feedback soundtrack by composers PeterScheidermann and Peter Kyed, who worked with Refn since his debut, addto this atmosphere.

What to say about this masterpiece. its simple and raw like the musicof the metal band Bathory. If you hit the play button and you expect tosee a blonde hair dude with sweet muscles wielding swords of the heavenand stuff , sorry. you will not find a mainstream Conan power rangerhere. This movie is made for people who actually understand what Valhalla is.and its shows you from the very first moment the trip of a manascending there. you can find hidden messages and meanings everywhere.even the fact that one eye is actually one eyed shows something. Odinthe King of Valhalla is one eyed. He sacrificed his eye in order toachieve eternal knowledge. As i have things on my mind the end of themovie is the acceptance of this man to the great halls of Valhalla. One eye doesn't speak. Doesn't make looks on his face. He is a man witha purpose and he has dedicated his self to it. He knows his way toValhalla and he finds it in the end. Christian's lust for glory andland can not stand in his way. I saw people believe that the only thing worths watching this movie isthe photography and the mountains. Excuse me but i believe that if thedirector wanted to show you mountains he would have made a nationalgeographic documentary. The mountains here represent the solid will ofthis man to taste the glory of entering Valhalla. One Eye himself is amountain. Solid to the bone on his purpose can not be deceived byChristian lust for glory and can not be stopped even by a "dead wind"sea.Lake of Tears,a band from Sweden, have the best suiting line for thismovie and i am gonna humbly use it to end my review."i wish , i dream. a dream of mountains side , were i can sit and lookdown the hill , and say... this is I"Farewell.

I bought Valhalla Rising the other day and was quite surprised by thisviolent, little thought-provoking thriller. Director Nicolas WindingRefn from Denmark is quickly becoming a very stylish and talenteddirector and the film is almost an art film as well as a drama /thriller. The story revolves around a mute one-eyed viking warrior (called One Eye ) who is used as a slave and paid to bash the livingdaylights out of and kill other fighters in the glens of the Scottishhighlands. One Eye fights for his owner but eventually overpowers them, slaughters most of them and walks free. He befriends a young boy andends up meeting a clan of Christian warriors who say will he join themon their journey to the holy land on their boat. The film is verymoody, beautifully shot and shows the amazing scenery of Scotlandthrough wide shots, tinted filters and stunning imagery, there is apart where the film gets quite slow but never loses you and it's 85 minrunning time is just about right. Mads Mikkelsen ( Le Chifre fromCasino Royale ) plays his part brilliantly without speaking a singleword and Gary Lewis, Jamie Sives and Ewan Stewart all lend goodsupport. An interesting little film and you should check this out as with ThePusher Trilogy, Fear X and Bronson also on his CV Refn is a directorworth keeping an eye out for, he for me uses elements and styles from avariety of people including Hitchcock and Werner Herzog and the film isvery similar to Aguirre - The Wrath Of God. 8 and a half out of ten.Stunningly beautifully shot film.

Spoilers!!! Enter Review for Valhalla Rising (2009)There are no redeeming features for this quite grotesque attempt atfilm making. There is little continuity, very little sensible portrayal ofcharacters, no background that would make it chronological, logical andgraphic violence is attempted to be used to make up for any reality. The travels from place to place are presented as if we are watching acartoon. The characters are never developed. The story line is reallynon existent, and the natives are made to look like clowns with nohumanity. All in all it's a disgrace to waste the 'celluloid' and time, The moneyspent on the film could have been better spent on curbside pick-up ofwaste.Did I say I only watched it to the end because I wanted to see if itqualified as my worst movie of all time.

Having heard a lot about the movie, and now seeing all the reviews,Valhalla Rising is clearly a movie that touches people at so manylevels. In some ways, I expected a lot more. The movie is clearly structured, taking you on the journey, in parallel with the One Eye and thecrusaders. It highlights how religion can easily confuse people, applying a dogmaas the rationale for their perverted actions.I found the movie quite intense, almost to the point of beingdepressing. Covering a fairly primitive period, it captures the need for survival,in a way that resonates across time. As One Eye discovers a deepermeaning, including his vivid dreams, he accepts the path to finalfreedom.

Get ready to be part of the movie. you must interpret what's happening in your own way. I love the cinematography! YOU need to be creative here! What if YOU were there. Be real!

For those who say it wasn't what they expected, I'd say I agree, however, this is a very good film. I remember hearing about all of thepyrotechnics which were used in 'Full Metal Jacket" and having justpreviously seen 'a clockwork orange' I was.fully prepared to have mysocks blown off. I left the theater disappointed. But having seen themovie many times since, and having become more familiar with Kubrick'sstyle, it is one of the greatest films of all time. I feel the sameabout 'Valhalla Rising" - not what you expect, but watch it more thanonce & you'll see that this is a helluva good movie. I'm not saying itis 10 out of 10 (e.g. Full metal jacket), but it is better than mostfilms. On the other hand, if you liked "Thor", don't bother with this film.Save yourself the wasted 2 hours and watch jersey shore or keeping upwith the kardashians. Better yet, turn off the TV and go study for yourGED.

I have to say this movie was outstanding. I didn't know what to expect and watched it alone and was really drawn into this movie. The imagery and sounds alone are captivating and will stir a part of your soul that 's not easily touched. I'm buying this movie, I only own maybe 3.
