The Best of the X-Men Films

After admiring the first three X-Men films directed by Bryan Singer andBrett Ratner, but was dumbed-down, yet enjoyed the corniness of "X-MenOrigins: Wolverine", I had a feeling that the X-Men movies would be abit more stronger with the prequel "X-Men: First Class". Dear reader, that feeling of mine was right, after all. "X-Men: First Class" is the5th installment of the X-Men saga, the first of the movies I'mexpecting to see a trilogy of, and the best of the X-Men films, so far.As much as I'm waiting to see Hugh Jackman come back as "The Wolverine"in 2013, "X-Men: First Class" is a movie that kept my expectations verywell-organized.Start with the plot: Before he became Professor X, he was CharlesXavier (James McAvoy), an Oxford grad living his life pretty well inLondon with his sister Raven (Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar-nominee for"Winter's Bone" and from the upcoming "The Hunger Games"), also luringwomen into learning a thing or two about mutation. Before he becameMagneto, he was Erik Lehnsherr (the great Michael Fassbender), a Germanman seeking revenge on the really evil Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon). When the two meet, they formed a great friendship, which, like me,should know what'll happen next. They have been recruited by MoiraMacTaggert (Rose Byrne), a CIA operative helping two, along with Ravenand Dr. Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult), to find the remaining mutants inorder to team up in order to take down Shaw and his evil team ofmutants. The Setting: The 1960's is a tough time to set in, but it works. Ittakes place during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and it was a difficulttime for mutants being registered as "freaks" by the humans. Notice thelook of it, including costumes done by Sammy Sheldon and productiondesign done by Chris Seagers and Grant Armstrong. The Acting: The casting of McAvoy and Fassbender couldn't be moreperfect in the roles originated by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.Lawrence in the role done by Rebecca Romijn as Mystique is terrific towatch. Bacon knows how to play evil very well, you are so lucky I'm nottelling you Erik's revenge. January Jones from TV's "Mad Men" createscrazy-sexy style and wit as Emma Frost. Hoult, Lucas Till (as Havok),Zoe Kravitz (Lenny Kravitz's daughter as Angel), Jason Flemyng (asAzazel) and Caleb Landry Jones (as Banshee) joins the cast of newmutants and does it really well. See if you can notice two members ofthe original films make some cameos. The Director: Matthew Vaughn, who did "Kick-Ass" and "Layer Cake",directed his 4th film with style and mind-blowing special effects. Allthe films that he's made so far have never been terrible or awful.Overall: This, like I said, is the best X-Men yet. A movie like thisbelong to something I like to call "The Summer of Blockbusters". Thisis the first film in my life that made me thought of the word:"Sequel!" I hope that fans and moviegoers will appreciate this film. It's funny, awesome, full of amazing action and has a great ensemblecast. Dude, what more of X-Men can you get?

I LOVED IT!!!

This review is from: X-Men: First Class (+Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I love the way the writers (Director Matthew Vaughn included) boldly adressed a form of discrimination that was not outright touched on in earlier films : Sexism. Having Moira Mctaggert be the main represention of what women experienced in that time period fit very well into the themes of the film. I also loved Mystique's journey into self acceptance and how realistically Charles Xavier was portrayed, as good of a person he naturally is he too is flawed and doesn't always have the answers or say all the rights things, that even he can slip up. Wonderful movie!!.

The X-Men go to the X-TREME

Some movies tend to leave important parts out and that causes the fansto wonder if a sequel if any will tie up all loose ends.Well thisprequel to the world renowned xmen franchise ties up pretty mucheverything there was to know although some things still go unexplainedbut I'm sure that First Class isn't the last X-Men film to be made. There are tons of stories to be told and this was just the beginning.Charles and Erik's relationship was "strained" from the beginning tosay the least but at least we got to see why Erik(Magneto) was so sternwhen it came to humans and mutants and Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shawwas phenomenal. As far as I'm concerned xmen will be a marvel moviethat will take years and years to forget if anyone wants to actuallyforget but this prequel to the hit franchise will make even non-marvelfans want to watch

Love It

This is the far greatest X-men movie has ever made, maybe many fan is praising of Bryan Singer last work toward the franchise but to me Matthew Vaughn does it better than Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner.X-men movie has actually begin to lost a lot of fan faith, luckily X-men First Class came a the right time with a perfect storyline, it's not just an average superhero movie,it's involve the nature of political and society problem. The characteristic the being potrayed by Michael Fassbender and James mcavoy toward each character was fasscinating.Jennifer Lawrence was also outstanding in giving a new breath toward the character mystique.I couldn't say what the lack of it because it is very little to say,I love it and looking forward for the sequel,Hope the best to Matthew Vaughn and all the star that will come back for the sequel.

X-Men First Class Movie

Precisely on the half of year 2011 while many watchers expected amiracle to happen and to see some stunning movie it didn't happen amiracle.Just in the cinemas there appeared new X-Men movie. If thetrilogy didn't bring you real sense of superhero story then 2009 wasyour year.X-Men franchise went in time before mutants' larger existenceon the Earth.Wolwerine was refreshing prequel and finally some reallygood-structure superhero film. Now after 6 months of drought incinemas, after 6 months of dull movies and still not enough good moviesFirst Class arrived in the cinema. At first sight you have a story aboutProffesor X and Magneto. These two characters aren't maybe sointeresting as Wolverine but their fight has really nice backup.MatthewVaughn as a director of overall teenage movie Kick-Ass in my viewwasn't taken seriously. He showed that he is really shrewd and gifted.Hedidn't let the movie to have its ups and downns. It was constantly greatand you could really be finally interested in something in cinema forabout 2 hours.Michael Fassbender was kind of dark horse in hisappearance but he was really surprising.McAvoy showed that Wanted isn'tpeak of his career.Even the appearance of the lady from Mad Men,JanuaryJones surprised me.Her fatal appearance provided enough material forgood story.Kevin Bacon in role of dirty villain concluded a reallygreat potential of cast. The youngsters from the movie were surprisinglygoood and they didn't spoil the movie. And finally my favourite 5seconds were short appearance of Wolverine. And now after great effectsyou can conclude that finally we got complete movie.Who knows will therest of the year overcome this state of art.

Good movie, bad copies

This review is from: X-Men: First Class (+Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I've received this movie TWICE from Amazon. Both Blu-ray copies were not created correctly and skip. At first I thought maybe it was my PS3, but it plays other blu-ray's and games just fine. I even had the same problem on another PS3. Either they didn't created this correctly for use on PS3's, or there is a whole batch of these that are messed up...

Amazing experience

When Someone says the work XMEN mostly you will remember Wolverine andCyclops and sure a little bit of Jean, Rogue and Gambit. We see Xavieras the father of the team with a lot of responsibilities and Magnetowho plans on Kidnapping the Xmen or start some kind of menace. This movie gives the reason Magneto , Xavier and Mystique have becomewho they are. It was just amazing from the beginning till the end. Weknow what is coming in the end but it leaves us wanting for more. I amlooking forward for the time where we will get to see our other belovedXMEN characters join the Xavier institute and where Magneto and Xavierwill fight together as a team.

As a Prequel, this is First Class

The big difference between sequels and Prequels is while Sequels cansimply continue a story, Prequels have to support the first films andbe genuine to the original story. One of the biggest examples of aPrequel Failure as I call it is the overloaded "Star Wars" PrequelTrilogy.I can say that this is not a failure at all. Unlike many other"Prequels" this one sets up the story of the characters as well astheir mission really well. One of the highlights is the performances bythe characters through the story. We see them struggle with theirabilities and either the acceptance or disgust with them. The film opens up where we meet the main focus of the story, that ofErik/Magnito and Charles/Professor X, as their childhoods are shown inquick explanation as to how differently they were raised. While Charleswas raised in privilege, Erik is exposed to one of the worst acts ofhumanity that can be seen. This sets up how their paths collide lateron, and for a brief time, unite them to fight a common enemy.Kevin Bacon plays Sebastian Shaw who's actions unite Charles and Erikas they try to both stop him, but for different reasons. Hisperformance as well as everyone else is very well done. But add that tothe other performances from all the other characters, and this is avery well acted movie. The characters appear as real people and you canreally feel their struggle as they debate from within about if theirabilities are a value or a curse. In the end, this movie supports the last three with great action, goodperformances and lots of nice little surprises fans of X-Men wouldexpect. Go see this one.. It's worth it.

Brilliant; sets the standard for X-Men films

The X-Men films are kind of a huge letdown as a whole, aren't they? The first two are pretty good, but everything good they had going for them was completely destroyed once The Last Stand came to fruition. Thank you, Brett Ratner. And X-Men Origins: Wolverine just drove the franchise even further into the ground; kudos, Gavin Hood. So there probably isn't any reason to get excited over a new X-Men film even if it is a prequel to the X-Men films people actually enjoy. Why would we want to see another comic book movie with limitless potential only to drop the ball yet again? Not only does X-Men: First Class take that ball and run with it but it uses it in all the right ways and reminds you why you loved the X-Men in the first place. The cast is way better than it has any right to be. Everyone fits their character incredibly well and works fantastically as a cohesive unit. Kevin Bacon seems like a bit of an odd choice for Sebastian Shaw at first, but any doubt you may have is washed away once you finally see him absorb energy. His role as the main villain may be significantly smaller than you may imagine, but his more than qualified acting chops make nearly every scene he's a part of memorable (nothing really tops his first scene with young Magneto though). James McAvoy does an excellent job handling Charles Xavier. He's gentle, kind, and really seems to care about helping his fellow mutants. Michael Fassbender as Magneto manages to have the strongest on-screen presence. He's intense, powerful, and emotional; the best-rounded character of the film.It was gratifying to see McAvoy and Fassbender make the roles of Professor X and Magneto their own without completely rehashing what Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan established the first time around. That is often a problem when it comes to prequels; these younger actors wind up focusing on mimicking the older version of who they're meant to portray without putting their own spin on it. Luckily, that wasn't an issue here.No expense was made when it comes to the special effects either; Azazel is a perfect example. By the end of the film, you still won't know anything about the character other than the fact that he can teleport like Nightcrawler and is a master swordsman. His teleporting ability is just as fun to watch as Nightcrawler's was in X2 and his fight sequences (especially the one with a particular blue mutant) are always quite engaging. Most of Magneto's scenes involve some pretty hefty CG and it's pulled off rather well. The metal fillings scene is a personal favorite along with the Argentina bar scene (pay particular attention to the slow building yet unnerving music used during that scene along with the weapon used at the table). Then there's the obvious scene of Magneto reversing the missles that's being shown in nearly every advertisement these days. Beast is probably a high point of the special effects. Nicholas Hoult portrays Hank McCoy rather flawlessly (other than one scene that I won't spoil); brainy, shy, not sure of himself, and ashamed of his mutation. Beast's transformation is one of the best scenes in the film though. It gave me flashes of An American Werewolf in London. It's a shame we didn't get to see more of him as Beast because the one good long scene we see of him is really impressive. One of the things that make X-Men: First Class so good is that we get to see how these characters grow into the superheroes and super villains that we know and love today. And again, while the film loosely follows the comics it still manages to blossom and mature into something exceptional on its own while also planting the appropriate seeds to line up with the Bryan Singer X-Men films. So by now you have an idea of how good the film is, but is there anything bad about it? Some characters feel really underdeveloped; Riptide, Darwin, and Angel come to mind, but the biggest disappointment is Havok. There are no connections that he's actually the brother of Cyclops and many will be upset about that. Plus his character doesn't really feel very useful in comparison to both Beast and Banshee who at least put their powers to good use on several occasions throughout the film. Other than a few minor gripes about certain characters, which could surely be rectified in future installments; there really isn't much to complain about with X-Men: First Class.Do not let other 20th Century Fox comic book related films put you off, X-Men: First Class deserves to be held in the highest regard right next to Marvel's best. The cast is practically overflowing with talent, the storyline is both sharp and absorbing, the special effects are probably the best they've ever been in any X-Men film, and the appropriate connections are made to the best parts of the original films. X-Men: First Class should be the standard for all X-Men films from here on out. It's intelligent, engrossing, and spectacular. It's easily the best X-Men film yet.

Don't touch my hair.....

Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X andMagneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the firsttime. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, workingtogether, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop thegreatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternalwar.....Strangely enough, one of the most under-hyped summer movies this year, turns out to be one of the best Marvel Adaptions made. Thor and CaptainAmerica have the biggest pull this year, Because of the avengers, buthis is a classy film, proving that Vaughn is one cool director, and agreat storyteller. He has got one of he best casts of the year, and managed to get a greatperformance from everyone of them. McAvoy and Fassbender are simplywonderful as X and Magneto, and kudos to them for not copying theirolder counterparts ala Ewan Macgregor in the Star Wars prequels. But the best thing about this is Kevin Bacon, and his sinister vergingon the edge of brilliance/highly camp Shaw. He steals every scene heis, and exudes evil as much as he consumes energy. But as always, with films with a lot of characters, a lot get lost inthe fray. Jones is lost, and just spends the time looking pretty, Theguy who can make wind doesn't even spout a line, and Flemying shouldhave been used more. The set pieces here are spectacular, and surprisingly very tense. Theattack with Erik and the anchor is exciting with great editing and useof effects, and the attack by Azazel dropping the 'men in black' fromthe sky has to be one of the set pieces of the year up to now. It's not just an event movie, this has to be the best X-men film madeup to now, and thats down to Vaughn and Goldman thinking beyond theeffects and giving us a great story, references to the fates of theX-men, characters to care for, and a narrative that is easy to follow. And plus we have one of the best cameos of the year.So all in all, it's not just a great summer movie, it's probably one ofthe best films released this year.

Seriously just watch this film!

Okay when treking to the cinema to see this please bear in mind that itwas the third time i'd been in a week. I needed something to do so offI treked to see x-men. I thought the first two in the series were goodbut come on the last stand was actually shameful and wolverine wasn'texactly a masterpiece. So although I expected to enjoy it I wasn'texpecting that much..The film was far better than I expected, I mean i should have guessedreally Vaughn is a pretty good director (stardust is a secret fave ofmine). Its refreshing to have wolverine out of the way with only aquick cameo, I mean what is everyones obsession with him anyway! JamesMacavoy is charming, I found myself dreading the moment when he losesthe power to walk far more than I should have.Fassbender is also great, and both men make you forget that two of the worlds greatest actorshave previously played them. The action is intense and there's morethan enough to satisfy anyone. The effects were also pretty goodespecially when the beast becomes full on blue, as much as I missedHoults incredibly cute face, he also looked great in blue. The standout for me was Lawerence as Mystique, she was great and brangsubstance to an important role. I've never really liked the characterbefore but now I'm seeing her in a different light. Bacon is a craftyvillain with a cool white interiored submarine but I seriously thoughthe was going to start dancing (i recently watched footloose for aboutthe 50th time).Okay the films not perfect but its pretty good, Jones as Emma Frost wasunderused and the screen felt a bit overcrowded at times because thereliterally tons of mutants. But I'd say it's one of my fave so far thisyear, well way better than water for elephants thats for sure! btw ihave spent a lot of time since i saw this movie attempting to movevarious metal objects with my hands and have sadly failed.

Crocodile Tears

I thought this was mostly a well written movie. It's a story aboutmutants and humans. Some mutants want to live with humans. Some want tokill them. It's also about the cold war and organizations like the CIA.Oddly, the movie seems to agree with the villains, and shows humans ina very negative light. The only good humans in the movie are CIAagents. That's right. The only two "good" humans are spies. In thecomics, Moira MacTaggert was a brilliant scientist, but in this movieshe's a spy.In addition, organizations like the CIA are painted with broad strokesas being close-minded organizations. It's hard to imagine why anorganization who recruits the best and the brightest and is constantlyadapting to situations around the world, like the CIA, is close minded. It's an ignorant view. It's a bigoted view. The movie seems to justify the villains at the end. Mystique tellsBeast to have "mutant pride" before she leaves. Charles Xavier evenkisses her goodbye. But it still was a well written movie. There weren't much specialeffects or eye candy though. It lacked feeling. The most exciting partof the movie was when Banshee was flying. The scenes with Azazel wereno where near as interesting as Nightcrawler in the second movie. Theyalso mispronounced Azazel's name dozens of times throughout the wholemovie.Maybe they should have split this into two movies, so they would havehad more time to explore the characters feelings. Before seeing this movie I was disappointed that they didn't have theoriginal first class (Beast, Angel (male), Cyclops and Jean Gray). Butthe kids in this movie has so little screen time that I'm almost happythey didn't have the original characters. It also didn't bother me that Kevin Bacon looked nothing like SebastianShaw. He had the attitude, and that's all that really matters I guess.I also didn't mind that they changed his powers, except for the partwhere he killed that guy by just touching him. That was just too easy.I was glad they showed the White Queen (Emma Frost) as being a powerfultelepath. I didn't think it was necessary to show her in diamond form.I think the whole diamond idea is stupid.

Best X-Men Movie I've Seen

This is a great movie. In the world of comic book movies, I see it assomewhere in the vicinity of "Batman Begins", but not as good as "TheDark Knight".In a context broader than comic book movies, though, it remains a greatmovie. Nothing is forced or artificial. Just about everything that ispresent in the movie has a place there. There is not an unnecessaryromance element. There are no unnecessary explosions, punches or kicks,or laser beams. There is only a minor detail of the story that I didn't quiteunderstand (though I could likely peruse the Internet to find some formof explanation). It involved the interaction of two characters' powers(if the notion that characters of this movie have powers is a spoilerfor you, ... you're probably not reading this review). I suppose mylack of understanding points to almost the only weakness I could find -vagueness regarding the nature of one of the characters' powers. Inever understood exactly what that character DID. Really, this turnsout to be relatively minor - but it's probably good that I'm honestabout the movie's weakness. There are a lot of really good reviews of this movie out there rightnow; and, for greater discussion about what the movie is good at, Ihave to recommend reading those - I just wanted to add a few words ofmy own. As many others have stated: great directing and very goodacting (STELLAR acting from the three primary roles) form a terrificmovie - 8 of 10 in my book. Very few movies would I rate higher thanthis one, and I don't imagine myself ever rating a movie with a'perfect' '10' rating - I don't generally find human creations to be'as good as they could imaginably be'. There's always room forimprovement; but at 8 of 10, this movie has small space in that area. The only elements I see which could have been substantially better (toperhaps warrant a 9 of 10 rating) are the uncertainty of one of thecharacters' powers mentioned above, the acting in many of the smallerroles, and the presence of the way many of the smaller roles werewritten and directed. That is, I think that a lot of the smaller rolescould have been presented in ways that made the movie as a whole abetter movie - generally with a greater presence for these smallercharacters. They seem, at times, to be more paintings on a backdropthan full characters. Unfortunate. The three primary roles are what this movie is all about, and each ofthose roles (and the exchanges between those roles) is just aboutspot-on. I think this is the first movie in which I enjoyed KevinBacon's screen presence. I'm looking forward to a follow-up of thisX-Men prequel/reboot, with the same team of producers, director, cast, and crew. I hope it happens, but I don't know if it will. It is muchbetter than any of the earlier X-Men movies or the movie of Wolverineprior to X-Men. The franchise would be done justice if it used thismovie as a foundation and continued from here.On the whole, this Hollywood skeptic recommends this movie at a theaterprice, and in a theater setting.

Not quite good enough to be worth watching

McAvoy and Fassbender display some commanding performances in thisfilm. The set design is visually appealing with a clean retro look.Unfortunately, some of the classic X-Men luster is lost in thestorytelling. Some scenes even seem intentionally campy in order tomatch the retro wardrobe and sets. Parts of the middle just seemed likea teen action flick, with a whole "look what I can do" trainingmontage. Even though none of them have been rated R, the X-Men serieshas been a mature-themed series (at least the movies are) and that toneshould hold true in all of the films. Additionally, the end just didn'tprovide a strong sense of closure. I'm a big fan of Matthew Vaughn, butthis film has been his weakest directorial effort to date.

Amazing MOVIE

Have to say that this movie lived up to the series..... Recommend it to anyone I know and looks great on Blu-ray...........

The Best

The movie was great. Direction and acting was superb and proves that with bryan singer, the movie is much better. Compared with the other "x" movies, this is the best. The costume designer also proved you don't need superhero costumes to look bad. Just look at what the members of the hellfire club wear, especially sebastian shaw.

Is Everyone Joking?

So I saw all of the initial reviews and ratings about this film and waspsyched to see it. Some people were saying it gave "The Dark Knight"competition for best comic book adapted film of all time. Are youkidding me? This film was just like every other X-Men movie made. Therewas nothing new or unique about this one. I have to admit that the filmhad some great potential and throughout the film I was sitting on theedge of my seat waiting for the film to make a turn for greatness. Itnever came. The actors did a good job, but some of the screenplay wasso flat that it took away from the film. The difference between a film like "The Dark Knight" and "First Class"is that "The Dark Knight" brings a serious, dark, and realistic tonewhile "First Class" continues the same trend X-Men have always been on.There is nothing magical about this film. There were some great scenesand cameo appearances, but overall this movie let me down tremendously.I was expecting so much more from a film that got 87% fromRottenTomatoes. Is everyone joking? Do not have high hopes for thisone.6/10
